I finished Moby Dick. So, to continue my former post(s) documenting my thoughts, here we are (spoilers ahead):

captain ahab: i am once again asking hast thou seen the white whale

I was thinking "the homosexual themes everyone talks about are really exaggerated apparently…" and then I got to the chapter about sperm squeezing

Stubb meeting with the French in chap 91 had the exact vibe of a filler episode on a comedy sitcom

there are a lot of moments that reminded me of The Office ngl like i could just imagine stubb in the little interview chair just talking. so much meme material. he's seriously just doing his own thing. the little random characters like the blacksmith and carpenter just talking shit and side-eyeing ahab in the background lmaoooo

I vote Ahab for the most Byronic hero to ever Byronic… Heathcliff and Rochester have nothing on him… The origin of the Byronic hero, Byron's titular character from the narrative poem Childe Harold, is literally mentioned by name in the novel and had to be a blatant inspiration - it could not be more obvious! (I have yet to encounter the famed Byronic heroes of Russian literature, most notably Eugene Onegin, a work where Byron is also blatantly name-dropped).

I noted some of my favorite Ahab moments/chapters and they are 36/37/41/70/99/108/109/113/115/116/119/125/129/132/134/135. Like I may seriously just re-read those chapters (no offense to Melville's whale facts, Stubb's jokes, & Pip's insanity)

the end is kind of similar to the great gatsby in the sense that you finally realize the entire novel was actually written for him to cope with his grief-related trauma & then suddenly it all makes sense. the lingering, the sentimentality regarding seemingly insignificant details or people, the meandering/digressing/procrastinating getting to the end, etc.

there are actually several moments -- i don't know if he actually referred to ahab or the others in past-tense specifically, but there were several moments where i felt like i kind of thought he was giving away the end before he did (it wasn't a shock to me bc i read about the end prior, but still)

Today the Trump family posed for a post-election photo. Missing from the group was former first lady Melania Trump. Joining the family was billionaire Elon Musk, who supported Trump’s campaign both through his ownership of X, formerly Twitter, and then with $132 million in cash and with apparent giveaways to get voters to give the campaign personal information.

As an immigrant from South Africa, Musk is barred from the presidency himself by the U.S. Constitution, which requires that a president be born in the U.S. (out of the Framers’ concern that a foreign country could put a puppet in the presidency). But he is now very close to Trump and stands to gain significantly from a Trump presidency, both through deregulation and government contracts, and through Trump’s planned tariffs on Chinese imports that will enable Musk to monopolize the electric vehicle market in the U.S. Musk also would like a victory in the culture wars; he is strongly opposed to transgender rights.

After the election results came out, Musk posted on X, “Novus Ordo Seclorum,” Latin for “New World Order.”

At Trump’s election party, Trump said: “We have a new star: Elon. He is an amazing guy. We were sitting together tonight—you know he spent two weeks in Philadelphia and different parts of Pennsylvania campaigning? He's a character, he's a special guy. He's a super-genius, and we have to protect our geniuses, we don't have that many of them. We have to protect our super-geniuses.”

Trump’s new closeness with Musk presents an issue for the Republican Party. The president-elect is 78 and has shown signs of mental and physical deterioration, making it possible that someone will need to take his place at some point in the next four years.

The vice president–elect, current Ohio senator J.D. Vance, who is backed by billionaire Peter Thiel, is constitutionally the next in line for the presidency, but neither Musk nor Vance has Trump’s popular support, making it unclear who will take over the leadership of the party if such a takeover is necessary. Whether either can command Trump’s supporters is also unclear.

What is clear is that neither of them has much experience in elected office. Vance was elected senator just two years ago, and Musk comes from the business world.

There is another, major problem for the party, as well: Trump won the election in part by promising everything to everyone, but the actual policies of the MAGA party are unpopular, even with many Republican voters.

Notably, Trump has said he will appoint Musk to head a new government efficiency commission, and Musk has vowed to cut “at least $2 trillion” from the federal budget. Such cuts would decimate government services, including food programs and Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. Supplemental nutrition programs disproportionately benefit rural areas, and Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid are used much more heavily in counties that support Trump than those that don’t.

That will be a hard circle to square.

So will Trump’s promise to lower consumer costs while also putting tariffs of 10% to 20% on all foreign imports and of 60% on imports from China. Tariffs are borne by consumers, so by definition they will drive prices up. These two promises cannot be reconciled.

Trump has promised mass deportations, and much of his base is fervently behind them. The Republican National Committee even had signs saying “MASS DEPORTATION NOW” made up for attendees to wave at the party’s convention.

Priscilla Alvarez and Alayna Treene of CNN reported today that Trump’s allies have been preparing for mass detentions and deportations of undocumented immigrants, and the stock prices of private prison companies GEO Group and CoreCivic have soared since Trump’s election. Steven T. Dennis of Bloomberg reported that on an earnings call today, GEO chief executive officer Brian Evans told investors that filling currently empty beds could bring in $400 million a year and that the company can scale up its current surveillance, monitoring, and transportation programs to handle millions of immigrants. “This is to us an unprecedented opportunity,” he said.

But deporting up to 20 million people will be a logistical nightmare and is projected to cost from $88 billion to $315 billion a year. At the same time, much of the U.S. economy depends on undocumented immigrants, and Republican businessmen will certainly object to losing their workers.

Tom Homan, who served as acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement under Trump in his first term, backed away from some of the extremes of Trump’s immigration policy when he told CBS last month: “It’s not gonna be—a mass sweep of neighborhoods. It’s not gonna be building concentration camps. I’ve read it all. It’s ridiculous…. They’ll be targeted arrests. We’ll know who we’re going to arrest, where we’re most likely to find ‘em based on numerous, you know, investigative processes.”

Meanwhile, Democratic state lawmakers have been preparing for a potential Trump administration for more than a year, and some are putting down public markers that they will not cooperate with the extreme policies of the Trump administration.

Trump vowed to begin his mass deportation plan in Aurora, Colorado, where he maintained—contrary to the statements of local Republican officials—that Venezuelan gangs had taken over the city. Aurora is a suburb of Denver, and yesterday the mayor of Denver, Mike Johnston, told a reporter he would not cooperate with requests that are “immoral or unethical or unfair.”

California governor Gavin Newsom called an emergency session of the California state legislature to convene on December 2, “to help bolster our legal resources and protect our state against any unlawful actions by the incoming Trump Administration.” It will focus on funding lawsuits against any actions that impact civil liberties, reproductive rights, protection for immigrants, and climate initiatives. Newsom said the California lawmakers “will seek to work with the incoming president—but let there be no mistake, we intend to stand with states across our nation to defend our Constitution and uphold the rule of law.”

California has the fifth largest economy in the world, and its population of 39 million people is more than four times the 9.59 million people in Hungary, the country from which MAGA Republicans are taking much of their ideological vision.

Illinois governor J.B. Pritzker, who has been called a “happy warrior,” held a press conference today, telling reporters that he will continue working to keep Illinois “a place of stability and competent governance” and vowing to protect the people of his state no matter what the new administration does. “To anyone who intends to come take away the freedom and opportunity and dignity of Illinoisans: I would remind you that a happy warrior is still a warrior,” he said. “You come for my people, you come through me.”

Trump has made it clear he intends to have a say in the decisions of the Federal Reserve, which manages interest rates, and during his first term he frequently attacked Fed chair Jerome Powell, whom he appointed, for not lowering rates to boost the economy. Trump’s advisors have suggested the president can gain power over the nation’s finances by removing members of the Fed in his next term.

Today, when reporters asked Powell if he would resign before Trump takes office, he said no. When asked if Trump could fire or demote him or the other Fed governors, Powell was firm: “Not permitted under the law.”

Names of the Raksura

to whom it may concern!! i made a list of the raksuran names (as translated for us into english) used in the books of the raksura. i included the names of the characters that we meet and hear about as well as the names that can be extrapolated from the fact that courts appear to be called [name of queen] [name of her consort]. this list is almost certainly not complete; it's very likely i missed some characters and courts, so feel free to fill me in on your favorite glup shitto if i missed them <3

the list of names is given in full at the end of the post. first, some stats!

i recorded 174 unique names for 197 raksura:

153 of these names were used by only one character

19 of the names were used for two characters (in most cases these are coincidental (e.g., two people named after the same thing in nature) rather than namesakes (i.e., one person named after another person))

2 names were used for three characters (Rain and Streak you are so important. parents love you)

i then categorized the unique names by word class (noun, verb, or adjective). of course, many of these words can be in multiple classes, so i went with what seemed to me to be the primary meaning (for example, Venture is both a noun and a verb, but its noun meaning seems slightly more fundamental; i think it came first etymologically). colors can be nouns or adjectives, but i kept them all as adjectives unless they were named after an object, like the indigo plant, in which case i called them nouns.

of the 174 unique names:

132 are primarily nouns

25 are primarily verbs

17 are primarily adjectives

of the 132 nouns:

111 are found in nature

11 are made/constructed objects

10 are abstract

the 111 nouns found in nature break down further by category:

animal, vegetable, mineral

fire, water, weather

celestial features

geographic features (including bodies of water)

light, time (i suppose these two could have fallen under "abstract" instead of "found in nature" but i felt like putting them here)

three names i wasn't sure how to classify (Horizon, Dust, Speckle)

i could have broken these down differently. for instance, i've currently got "animal (component)" as a subcategory of animal, but most of those names are also materials that the arbora might use in their crafts (Shell, Bone, Feather, Horn, Ivory). so i could have had a "material" category that would have also contained most of the minerals as well as some of the "plant (component)" names. but i liked keeping the minerals separate to make it more obvious that over half of them are queens.

or i could have had an "edible" category that would have contained some of the "plant (component)" and "plant (exemplar)" names as well as some of the water names and, perhaps, Salt. but much of their diet is meat, and other than Heart (which could refer to a plant part instead of an animal part!), none of their names are meat-related, which to me suggests "edible" may not be a relevant category.

i could have put all the bodies of water in the "geographic features" category into the "water" category, but then i wouldn't have known what to do with Vale and Reef. also i put Amber as a plant component and Pearl as a mineral, when maybe by this logic Pearl should be an animal component?? is it Tear as in the verb (rhymes with tare) or as in the noun (rhymes with tier)? (i went with the verb, since, as far as i can tell, raksura do not cry.) i put Umber in the mineral category even though technically it's a soil which is probably a different thing, but if we think of it as a mineral/stone/metal/soil category, it works. etc., etc. so it's all a lil bit arbitrary.

for each character, i also recorded what type of raksura they are (Aeriat or Arbora) and their caste (for the Arbora: hunter, soldier, teacher, mentor; for the Aeriat: warrior, queen, consort). there are a few patterns here:

all the characters named after nouns found in nature that i classified as fire, water, weather, and time were Aeriat.

interestingly, all nouns having to do with darkness, which fell in either the light (Shadow (x2), Shade) or time (Dusk, Night, Twilight) categories, were for consorts specifically, possibly because of their matte black scales? even Bitter Starshell, which is a flower, may be related, as it is a flower that opens only at night.

geographical features were more likely to be names for Aeriat (7 Aeriat, 1 Arbora), as were minerals (23:4) and celestial objects (6:1).

plant components were more likely to be names for Arbora (12:5), while specific types of plants were more likely to be for Aeriat (13:6).

verbs for acting on objects were more likely to be names for Arbora (4:1).

out of 19 total characters with water-related names (all 6 in the water category as well as 8 in the weather and and 5 in the geographical features categories), 18 of them are Aeriat. Rill, a female Arbora, is the only exception.

there are more than twice as many Aeriat in my database as Arbora (133 Aeriat, 61 Arbora, and 3 additional characters for whom this information isn't provided), so the categories that appear to be more Aeriat-heavy could just be a function of there being more Aeriat overall. if, to make the Arbora more directly comparable to the Aeriat, we were to extrapolate 61 more Arbora and assign them to categories in the same proportion as the Arbora currently in the database (which would still give us more Aeriat than Arbora, but it'd be closer, 133:122), we'd double the Arbora in each category, which would make the apparent Aeriat lead in the plant (exemplar) category disappear (it would now be 13 Aeriat to 12 Arbora instead of 13:6). the categories that have no Arbora at all seem slightly more likely to be specifically reserved for Aeriat, though the N was small in some of these so it's hard to say for sure.

i also recorded female/male, which imo is a strange distinction for this species to have, but that's a story for another day. the database contains 102 female characters, 87 male characters, and 8 for which this information wasn't given.

more likely to be names for female characters: adjectives (12F:6M), abstract nouns (9F:3M), plant (component) nouns (10F:6M, plus 1 unknown), plant (exemplar) nouns (13F: 6M), minerals (17F:10M; this is largely because of how commonly queens are named after minerals)

more likely to be names for male characters: light-related nouns (2F:6M, plus 1 unknown), time nouns (2F:5M)

while Aeriat/Arbora and F/M are assigned at birth, you can't tell if an Aeriat is going to be a warrior or a royal until they're older, though if a royal clutch is single-gender, it's more likely to contain warriors than a mixed-gender royal clutch. if that's the case, we might expect to see more stereotypically queenly (e.g., mineral) and consort-y (e.g., darkness) names in mixed-gender royal clutches than in single-gender ones, but i don't know enough about the clutchmates of the named characters to say whether that holds up.

mentors may be expected to have dignified names, but apparently you can't tell if an Arbora has mentor abilities until they're at least 10. it sounds like an Arbora's name, if it's too silly for a mentor, might be changed when they present as a mentor, assuming they're still a child (about Fluff, it's said that his powers presented when he was already out of the nurseries, at which point it was too late to change his name).

in any case i didn't do a stats breakdown by Arbora caste, since for the most part these are chosen by the person in adulthood and so (theoretically) are unlikely to correlate with the name given in infancy. but i have listed the caste for each Arbora at the end of the post.

This book solely focuses on the brothers. As you see with Lucifer pages, each brother has their own tiny bio, costume preview, and chibi page to look at which I find adorable. After that, you get a snippet of their concept art? Not gonna lie. I was expecting a bit more on this because I was actually curious on how they look before their official appearance but I guess we will never see..

Then finally the card illustrations!! (´ ▽｀).。ｏ♡

There are 303 pages. Filled with card illustrations from the game. The quality is very well made to my delight. The pages are smooth and the colors are amazing!

My only complaint is that it sucks to not know who made each of these amazing works. I was hoping to see who are the artists to follow them online and find more art books from them but found none to my disappointment.

And of course, the cost for this book is $52.64 from nin-nin-game. Yes, this site is safe and legit as I've been buying from them for some time (this is where I mostly get my nendoroids) but be sure to read the description/details!! They do sell pre-owned items!!

And for those who ask me about these books. Yes. These books are worth it. Especially if your like me who dreads not getting the cards in time. As someone who refuses to spend money on gacha games that has no guarantee on getting them at a reasonable price. For me, this is the best way to save my sanity and money.

I love these books. I don't feel bad not getting the cards anymore like I use to. If I miss them, that's okay! I have these books. Same goes for Twisted Wonderland. I don't have to spend over $80 to get a card by chance.

So, yeah, sorry for the ramble. As you see, I get really mad about the prices of gacha games. It's ridiculous. I remember trying to get Vil Birthday Boy card and never again. And mind you this is before the pity pull but even with the pity; there's still no guarantee getting the card because you might pull someone else's card who shouldn't be in the banner. -glares at Jade, Floyd, and Rook-

Even better: he’s en route to the only drug store on this side of town that’s open all night tonight, and it’s after 11 and he’s risking life and limb (okay, that’s probably an exaggeration, but drunk drivers and weirdos abound on nights like this) to go grab a pregnancy test, some snacks, and a bottle of moscato (which depends on how the test goes) for his roommate Anne. Not like he had anything better planned, honestly– ordering takeout and watching TV with Anne had been his big plans for the evening– but it’s cold and dark and loud and he’s not super thrilled with how the night’s going. Then he meets someone in the snack aisle and he changes his tune a little.

It’s a Date: Blackbeard/Edward Teach and Stede Bonnet; Rated T; 2,769 words. Stede's a regular at the coffee shop Ed works at. They're both going to a party at Lucius', but Stede's bringing a date. Ed's bummed about it.

The mighty Kings River runs through the San Joaquin Valley of California, beginning as snowmelt in the high Sierras and running over 132 miles down the valley to where it terminates near what used to be Tule Lake. Besides providing a haven for wildlife and fishermen alike, there are multiple powerhouses along its course, and it provides irrigation for over a million acres of farmland, including several dozen acres of citrus along the south bank of the lower river in Piedra. This was the domain of one Edward Teach: 29 years old, single, and trying his damndest to keep his criminal record from getting any longer. The tweet from @Times of Gaza reports at 2:50 am of Feb 22, “Day 139 | During the past 24 hours: 9 massacres committed by the Israeli occupation • 97 people killed • 132 injured.” At 10:52 am @Times of Gaza reports: “UPDATE | 23 people killed in the Deir Al-Balah airstrikes. The death toll is expected to rise.”

This continued loss of life is irreplaceable and my heart mourns for them. FREE PALESTINE please God.

What is clear is that neither of them has much experience in elected office. Vance was elected senator just two years ago, and Musk comes from the business world.

That will be a hard circle to square.
