Speculations on Claude's difference in character in 3 Hopes vs 3 Houses

Writing this because I'm so tired of seeing so many angry comments and tweets and posts about his supposed character assassination (among other things) and because I have faith in my guy. As of writing this, I've only just finished Part 1 of Golden Wildfire and only know some tidbits from spoilers (which I willingly exposed myself to)

The main gripe people seem to have about Claude's character is to do with how forceful and unwilling to hear people out and inquire about situations and people's motives. Personally, I don't see it as character assassination but rather a different way he could have developed if he hadn't gone through White Clouds in 3 Houses or met Byleth, or hadn't had to kill his half-brother, Shahid.

What I think was the turning point for Claude's forceful and aggressive actions, was very likely the event that he killed his own brother. We see traces of 3 Houses Claude, him trying to reason with Shahid and wanting to talk things out but alas, Shahid doesn't care and Claude ultimately makes the decision to kill him. Post-battle, we see Claude is very clearly affected by that event.

6 months later, Claude reforms the Alliance into the Leicester Federation and is placed as its king.

Perhaps it's all the stress built up from the war. The Alliance has been going through battle after battle and it's taking a toll on him. It doesn't help that because he wasn't in the Academy for a year to get to know his classmates and learn to trust others, he feels like as the Alliance Leader (as of Part 1), he has to shoulder all the decisions and be responsible for everything that happens. The Roundtable Conferences don't help with his frustrations either.

Through supports and the story itself, Claude has shown signs of disdain for the Alliance's system, but he hasn't really seen the need to change it, although it is inefficient. Then Shez comes along and goes, "Hey, why don't you make yourself the sole leader so decisions will go by faster during wartime?" and it opens up a possibility he hadn't even thought about. If he becomes the sole leader and doesn't need to go through the endless circling of decisions waiting for all 5 lords to come to a unanimous decision, things will be done faster and he can do what he wants to do quicker.

Back to Shahid's death and his impact on Claude's mental state - it definitely changed him. Perhaps after making the choice to kill his own blood, he made the decision to no longer hold back. He can't be too "soft" or hesitant anymore. He needs to be more resolved in his decisions and perhaps that is why we see the Claude we see in 3 Hopes. The aggressive, cutthroat Claude who doesn't consider choosing to hear people out. This can be seen in his decision to send troops to the 3 lords' territories to create public order instead of Lorenz's suggestion to send an envoy first. Claude even says that they'll "probably make half-baked excuses anyway" and that there's no point talking things out. This is pretty much where I've left off from the game, but it's clear that Shahid's refusal to reason with him still affects him.

I do think that perhaps the writers could have shown that a bit more, but Claude is way more reserved in his emotions and willingness to express himself and it may have been difficult to show that internal turmoil. Either way, I still think calling Claude's change of character, "character assassination" is going too far especially if you don't consider the prior events and the what-if's and differences in situation and events that occur between both games.

I have a big weakness for self-aware, yandere characters so your headcanons are a miracle to me. Could you do something with Deuce where the player always compliments him whenever they get a card or see him? He is my best boy and I love him so darn much that I always louldy anounce it when I see him :,) Thank you!

who needs IDs, how do they help and why are they used? i've always been curious, i mean no harm by asking, so sorry if this is rude

Not rude at all anon, I'm so glad you asked!! Image descriptions are accessibility aids for vision-impaired folks and anyone who may have issues parsing an image (ex: an autistic person unable to comprehend a visually busy art piece). For people who can't see an image for any reason, IDs provide a way to understand what's on screen, whether it's a meme or tweet or art. For example, a blind person using a screen reader (a device that reads text out loud) wouldn't know what an undescribed all-image post was talking about, but with an ID they could know it's a tweet and then a meme mocking it

IDs can look abstruse and intimidating when you're unfamiliar with them, but I promise they're not! The simplest step to making your blog more accessible is scanning the notes of a post to find a comment with an ID and reblogging that version of the post instead! If you're interested in learning how to write your own IDs, I really love this post as a resource, plus the amazing People's Accessibility Server if you have questions or want to request descriptions! I'd also like to plug my pinned post, which has a link to a doc with templates for a ton of memes so you can describe posts yourself!

Copying tags in accessible ways on mobile

People screenshot tags all the time, whether to share a funny joke or add important commentary, but they often don't realize that this is inaccessible to vision-impaired people and many others. This is a problem because a lot of people primarily use Tumblr on the mobile app, which doesn't let you interact with tags at all unless you screenshot them. However, accessibility is always worth the extra time and effort you can spare, so here are some ways for you to easily copy tags without spending too much of either!

Image-to-text softwares

If you simply must screenshot those tags, you can still convert them back into usable text! There are plenty of easy-to-use websites that allow you to take any downloaded image and extract the text from them. I prefer onlineocr.net, but the Google Translate app has the same feature! All you need to do is input the image and hit the button, and it'll spit out the text for you to copy. This method is fantastic for images with lots of text, not to mention it's easy to do and generally accurate, and I use it all the time to great effect!

Going to browser

If you're on mobile, it's probably a safe bet to say that your phone also has a browser app. If so, all you need to do to copy the tags from a post is copy the link of said post into a browser and then copy the tags from there. This method can mean extra formatting, since hashtags and links won't copy over, but it's relatively low-effort to do and doesn't take long at all!

If you're on mobile, you can also consider saving the post with desired tags to your drafts. This means you can easily access it on another device, aka a computer, and copy the tags there! Copying tags on desktop is possibly the easiest way to do it, since all you need to do is highlight the text and paste it later- it'll even save the link formatting when you do! The only extra step you might have to do is add spaces between the tags, since they'll automatically come smushed together and only separated by hashtags. This method might mean you take a little longer to reblog the tags, but it is very much worth it to make the post accessible to all!

These methods are a smidgen more effort than just screenshotting or prev tagging, but I don't think it's a bad tradeoff at all! I hope this can provide quick and easy ways for everyone to get more used to thinking more conscientiously about accessibility. And these aren't your only options- alt text helps people who use screenreaders, and you should always add an image description below screenshots if you're going to add them. Hope this helps!

TL;DR: Instead of screenshotting tags, which makes them inaccessible, other options are: using image-to-text software, copying the tags on a mobile browser, or copying them on desktop Tumblr.

How to Keep Doing Descriptions (from someone who does a fuckton)

Plain text: How to Keep Doing Descriptions (from someone who does a fuckton)

This is a list aimed mostly at helping people who already write IDs; for guides at learning how to do them yourself, check my accessibility and image description tags! I write this with close to two years of experience with IDs and chronic pain :)

Get used to writing some IDs by using both your phone and your computer, if you can! I find it easier to type long-form on my laptop, so I set up videos and long comics on my phone, which I then prop up against my laptop screen so I can easily reference the post without constantly scrolling or turning my head

I will never stop plugging onlineocr.net. I use it to ID six-word tags, screenshots of posts, and even comic dialogue! On that last note, convertcase.net can convert text between all-caps, lowercase, sentence case, and title case, which is super helpful

Limit the number of drafts/posts-to-be-described you save. No, seriously. I never go above 10 undescribed drafts on any of my four blogs. It doesn’t have to be that low, but this has done wonders (italics: wonders) for my productivity and willingness to write IDs. If I ever get above that limit, even if it’s two or three more, I immediately either describe the lowest-effort post or purge some, and if I can't do that then I stop saving things to drafts no matter what. No exceptions! Sticking to this will make your life so much easier and less stressful

I make great use of voice-to-text and glide typing on my phone to save my hands some effort!

Something is always better than nothing!!! A short two-sentence or one-sentence ID is better than no ID at all. Take it easy :)

If you feel guilty about being unable to reblog amazing but undescribed art, try getting into the habit of replying to OP’s post to let them know you liked it! This makes me feel less pressured to ID absolutely everything I see

I frequently find myself looking at pieces of art which feel like they need to be considered for a bit before I can write an ID for them, and those usually get thrown into drafts, where the dread for writing a comprehensive ID just builds. Don’t do that! Instead, try just staying in the reblog field for a bit and focus on the most relevant aspects of the piece. Marinate on them for a little; don’t rush, but don’t spend more than a handful of seconds either. I find after that the art becomes way easier to describe than it initially seemed!

On that note, look for shortcuts that make IDs less taxing for you to do! For example, I only ever describe clothes in art if they're relevant to the piece; not doing that every time saves a lot of time and energy for me personally

Building off of that, consider excusing yourself from a particular kind of ID if you want to. Give yourself a free pass for 4chan posts, or fanart by an artist who does really good but really complex comics, whatever. Let it be someone else's responsibility and feel twice as proud about the work that you can now allot more energy to!

As always, make an effort to find and follow fellow describers! It’s always encouraging to get described posts on your dash, and I find that sometimes I'm happier to ID an undescribed post when the person who put it on my dash is a friend who tagged it with "no ID"

TL;DR: To make ID-writing less stressful and more low-effort, use different devices and software like onlineocr.net and voice-to-text, limit the amount of work you expect yourself to do, and reach out to artists and other describers!

They have Eddie the Technophobe man the official lafd twitter account, and less than a year letter, Twitter is dying. Coincidence?... Probably, but it's still funny.

*snooooooorts* Hi hon, I have to tell you it is not nice to make me choke on my drink like that! XD I’m laughing so hard. OMG, what a mess Twitter is going through! And look at the effect that will have on other social media sites, too. I do wonder, what are the odds that this is all some sort of a master plan implemented by Buck? He was deep diving - as a trivia lover like him does - into Musk’s biography and decided that the man needed to be taken down. So when Eddie asked to be transferred, Buck saw his opportunity. He knew that it can only eventually cause Twitter to implode if Eddie is left anywhere near it, so Buck talked to Bobby and while no one else is aware, he’s the one who planted the idea in their captain’s head of where to get Eddie re-assigned. Buck got Eddie to tweet on the LAFD account stuff that Musk wouldn’t be able stand in order to lure him in, and the rest was just inertia the second that Musk, Twitter and Eddie were all on a collision course. Of course, there’s was no way Eddie would stay away from the 118 for too long if he had to deal with that much technology every single day, so eventually, he would have to quit and come back to being a firefighter. Two birds, one stone smug Evan Buckley who got everything he ever wanted, especially his work husband back. ;)

9-1-1 REACTION

This reaction is for the season 5, fifteenth episode titled “FOMO” which originally aired on April 25, 2022. The episode was written by Nicole Barraza Keim and directed by Marita Grabiak. Spoilers ahead!

The OG episode is back with another fun episode which is lending further credence to my notion that the back half of this season is way better than the first half. I love that we have Maddie and Chim back because those characters are such a major component to the show. I do miss having Michael (Rockmond Dunbar) around, but I’ve noticed that without him on the show, we get to see more of just Athena and Bobby together which is nice because while I liked the idea of their blended family, it’s refreshing to see them by themselves. I also think the show is doing a great job of balancing a rather large cast and no one ever feels like they are being short-changed.

So, let’s get into this week’s episode which has a few of our characters wondering if there is a life out there they are missing out on. We start with a social media influencer named Selene giving a tour of a home she claims is hers. At first I thought this was the same social media influencer from a few seasons ago, the one who had the botfly in her cheek, but this is a completely different person. As Selene is walking through the palatial home, she takes her viewers into a sauna and pours water on the rocks to get the steam going. As she is trying to talk and keep her camera trained on herself, the construction going on causes her to slip and fall face first onto the hot rocks. Cue 9-1-1 call.

May gets a call from one of Selene’s viewers detailing what’s just happened. May sees that there have been six other calls received in regard to Selene’s accident and Linda tells her she is on the phone with someone else calling about the same thing. People are calling from all over the country about it. There’s a funny moment where May is trying to explain what a ‘luxury influencer’ is to Sue Blevins and she says, “it’s her job to be rich”. I cracked up at hearing that because there are people out there who literally get paid to be pretty and rich and hey, kudos to them for cracking the code and reaping the benefits. Sue enlists Eddie to tweet about the emergency in hopes of getting more information about where Selene is located. It's still weird seeing Eddie working at the dispatch center but I do like that it gives us the opportunity to see him interact with characters like May and Linda and Sue Blevins.

Eddie tweets a photo of Selene while May figures out the house Selene is in is somewhere in Brentwood. Together her and Eddie are able to at least locate what street the house is located on. Eddie sees that his tweet is getting a lot of attention and notices one of the comments is from someone claiming to be Selene’s mother. We then see Selene’s parents at the police station talking to Athena and this is when we learn that Selene is not the influencer’s real name. Her name is Rebecca, and her parents are shocked to learn that she’s been living a double-life unbeknownst to the both of them. They’re both upset about the situation and Athena reminds them that while their daughter has made a mistake, she is going to need her parents to get through this situation. Athena then asks how Rebecca gets back and forth to college. The dad tells her that she has a car but it’s not in her name, it’s in theirs.

This information is relayed to the 118 and they comb the street looking for Rebecca’s vehicle. When Bobby approached the house he sees there is construction going on. He tells one of the workers he needs to get in the house because there’s someone trapped in the sauna. The 118 finds the influencer formerly known as Selene unconscious inside the sauna and Hen and Chimney access her injuries. The side of her face is stuck to the hot rocks, so they have to use saline to carefully remove her. Chimney mentions she has third degree burns on her face which is rough to hear because this is someone who makes money off of their appearance. Rebecca is then loaded onto a gurney and taken away to a burn unit.

Back at the dispatch center, we get to see May and Eddie interact which was fun. Eddie is very cynical about the whole situation and says that it’s a high price to pay for a fake life. May plays devil’s advocate and suggests maybe the Selene/Rebecca felt like she was missing out on a life she could have had if she’d been born someone else or made different choices. May asks Eddie if he’s ever thought considered the ‘what if’s’ and Eddie quickly answers no which means he is definitely not being honest. May then explains the concept of FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) to Eddie and I love this is the second time to episode she’s had to explain something to one of the older characters. Eddie says FOMO sounds like a sickness and May says it sort of is.

Next we see Maddie bring Jee-Yun home to Chimney and it’s so lovely seeing them coparent together. I’m still confident these two will find their way back to each other in the romantic sense but for now I love seeing them interacting with their daughter together. Maddie sees that her baby box which is now Jee-Yun’s baby box is sitting out on the counter and Chimney explains that he found some things from Boston that he wanted to put inside. Maddie opens it up and sees several photos of Chimney and Jee-Yun and we get our second case of FOMO this episode. Maddie laments missing out on many of Jee-Yun’s milestone moments but Chimney says it’s okay because he documented the moments so she can catch up.

Maddie talks to Buck and she says that while it was sweet of Chimney to keep track of the moments she missed with Jee-Yun, she hates that she wasn’t there to experience them first-hand. Buck reminds her that even if she was there, there would’ve been moments he missed out on anyway because it’s not like she can be with the baby 24/7. Maddie says it’s fine to miss out on a few moments, but she’s missed out on all of them and that makes her feel like a bad mother. Buck assures her that she’s not a bad mother and that Jee-Yun will never think of her as such. Maddie mentions how Buck knew something was wrong in their family before anyone ever spoke up about it and worries that Jee-Yun feeling something similar. Buck says his situation is very different from Jee-Yun’s. It was their parents’ inability to deal with their own emotions that led to all of the deception and that Maddie is dealing with hers. Maddie fears she’s scarred her daughter for life, but Buck says she hasn’t because this isn’t her first time at the rodeo. Jee-Yun may be her first child, but Buck is the first person she raised. I wanted to hug Buck is this moment because he truly is one of the best parts of this show. He is such a great friend and brother, and I don’t feel like he gets the credit he deserves.

Athena brings a shit-ton of food over to May’s apartment which is such a mom thing to do. I love their relationship so much. They have truly come so far. May asks if Athena she’s ever wondered what life would be like if she hadn’t met Emmett. May says that prior to meeting him she was in law school and plan but all of that was dropped in favor of becoming a police officer. Athena says that she didn’t drop her law school plans because of Emmett. That seed had already been planted before him. The only thing that Emmett did was teach her to be brave enough to pursue her dream. Athena says she regrets nothing about her life choices. May then tells Athena she received a letter from USC saying her deferral is over and that she has to decide if she’s going to enroll for the fall semester or give up her spot to someone else. What I like about this scene is that the old Athena would’ve told her what she needed to do but new and improved Athena leaves the choice up to May. May is feeling conflicted because she’s always wanted to go to USC, but she loves being a dispatch. She doesn’t know what she should do but Athena reminds her to be brave.

We then see Hen and Karen (yay Karen is back) leaving one of those restaurants that is zero degrees, and you have to wear a special jacket. When they get to their vehicle, they see that it’s been broken into. At first I thought this was about to go in a hate-crime kind of direction, but it turns out Karen’s purse with all her IDs and cards was stolen out of the backseat.

Our next emergency involves a young guy who is dressed to get married. At first I thought we were on the set of a soap opera or a TV series because of the guy barking orders while wearing a headset. We quickly learn the guy in the tuxedo is filming a reality show where the bride and the groom don’t meet each other until they’re at the altar. I’d like to take a moment to get on my soapbox and say that for all the talk I’ve heard over the years about queer people ruining the sanctity of marriage, I think this is a classic example of how straight people are doing fine on their own running the “sanctity” of marriage. Now I will step off my soapbox.

The groom collapses before vows are exchanged and the 118 arrive on the scene. I love how Buck is always so excited whenever he realizes he’s on camera. While Hen checks on the groom, the cameras keep rolling. The bride seems annoyed by the whole situation even though the groom is suffering a real medical emergency. Hen realizes the groom’s organs are all on the opposite side of the body so rather than his heart be on the left-hand side, it’s located on the right side. I honestly didn’t know something like this could happen but kudos to Hen for figuring it out. By the way – is Hen still in med school? We haven’t heard her mention med school since the prison breakout episode which was several episodes ago. I hope she continues to pursue medicine because she’s really good at it.

The groom starts to code, and Hen manages to drain the blood filling up his chest cavity while Buck ventilates him. Eventually his heart rate returns to normal, and the groom is taken to the hospital. On the way out the same guy with the headset tells the 118 they will need to sign some paperwork so they can air the episode. They all decline but you can tell that Buck was seriously considering signing the paperwork.

At Hen and Karen’s house, Karen tells Hen that she feels old because all of her coworkers are significantly younger than her. She talks about how their lives are much different from hers and how they go out every single night.  They take road trips, and they backpack. She feels her coworkers are making the most of their lives and while she loves her family and the time she spends with them, a part of her misses being the age or feels like she missed out on the things that come with being that age. Hen broaches the topic were her coworkers at the 118 and Chimney tells her that you can’t change what is and there’s no such thing as making up for lost time.

In our final emergency of the episode, we see a mother and her three daughters on a nature hike. The oldest tells her mother that she no longer wants to live with her dad, but the mom tells her that the arrangement they have works out best for them. Since she works during the week, they get to stay with their father during that time, which means she gets to see them on the weekends and do all of the fun stuff. The mom assures her oldest that no matter what she can always reach out to her, 24/7. It was at the moment I knew things were not going to turn out happy for this family.

The two youngest girls stumble upon an abandoned missile base that’s been out of commission since the cold war. When the mom and oldest daughter catch up with them, they start playing a game of tag. When the oldest daughter starts chasing her sister, a portion of the ground starts to give way underneath her. The mom pushes her out of the way just in time for a hole to open up. The mom falls through while her three girls look on in abject horror.

I felt really bad for this family when the 118 arrived. I had a feeling that unlike the other two emergencies this episode, this one was going to end in tragedy. Bobby consoles the girls while the rest of the 118 springs into action. While Chimney and Hen repel down, Buck and Lucy find a tunnel leading down to where the mom has fallen. Hen and Chimney find the mom barely hanging onto consciousness and she’s in really bad shape. She can’t feel anything which is not a good sign. Hen accesses her injuries and believes she may have a pelvic fracture. To make matters even worse her abdomen is filling up with blood. Things are certainly not looking good, and the mom knows it. She tells Hen and Chimney she’s been trying to make up for loss time with her daughters. She asks to speak to them, and they arrange for her to call her kids who are waiting for her up top. The conversation between the mom and her three daughters, two of whom look very, very young, is so heartbreaking. It’s not often that 9-1-1 gets a tear out of me, not sense season one, but this scene was very reminiscent of when Hen accidentally hit the young girl in season 3.

The three girls ride in the firetruck ahead of their mom who has been carried away by ambulance. When the middle daughter notices the siren isn’t on, the oldest responds by telling her that their mom doesn’t need it. It’s the first of many moments she will have to step in and be a maternal figure for her two younger siblings and this broke my heart as well. These kids are way too young to be losing a parent. I think of all the pivotal moments they’ve yet to experience that she won’t be there for. We do get a bit of closure to this storyline when we see the three girls and their father visiting the same spot where their mother died. It looks like they’re going to be okay, but it will be hard. Hopefully the four of them have learned the importance of enjoying the moments they have together instead of trying to make up for things that never came to be.

We head back over to the dispatch center to visit my new favorite pairing: Eddie and May. The two of them watch a video of the influencer formerly known as Selene and she tells her followers the truth about who she is. She leaves her fandom a powerful message about embracing who you are and who is important. Her parents are in the hospital room while she films her video, so it looks like she’s learned her lesson. I do wonder if she will eventually get in trouble for breaking and entering though once she is officially on the mend. May seems to be affected by her message and wonders if she is living her life for herself. She tells Eddie the only reason she took the dispatch job was because she wanted to be able to look after Athena she almost died. In the process she forgot about her own dreams. Eddie can relate because he is in a similar boat. I love how these two can relate to each other. Maybe May will go to USC after all and maybe Eddie will make a return to the 118.

At Hen and Karen’s, Karen has made the decision to enjoy what she currently has instead of yearning for what could have been. Hen receives a fraud alert on her phone saying someone is using one of their credit cards at a club nearby. Rather than decline the charge, Karen gets the idea to confront the person who has stolen Hen’s identity. The two of them head over to the club and confront the woman who is using Hen’s identity. I thought this was a funny scene, but I also thought it was dangerous. What if the person who stole their credit card was a dangerous person? This whole scenario could have turned bad. Really bad. Ironically going after this woman has seemed to reinvigorate Karen. I love her. I love her and Hen together and I really wish we got to see more of them.

We then head over to Chimney’s, and we see Maddie feeding Jee-Yun. Jee-Yun is refusing to eat the food that Maddie is trying to give her, so she decides to make her some fish sticks. Eww! As she turns around she hears Jee-Yun making eating sounds. When she turns around she and Chimney see Jee-Yun feeding herself. Maddie is thrilled by this because this is a milestone moment for Jee-Yun, and she is there to witness it. Maddie realizes there will be plenty more milestones for her to be present for. I love how proud Chimney is and he’s definitely going to be that dad who is at every performance with camera phone in hand. Rather than record the moment, Maddie tells him to just enjoy the moment.

At Athena and Bobby’s, Bobby comes home to see Athena going through some of her old things. She talks about her friends and her dreams, and he asks her if she has any regrets. She tells him she is exactly where she needs to be. I love that.

The last scene of the episode is Hen and Karen at the club dancing, having a great time. Living in the moment. No more fear of missing out.

So, here are my thoughts on “FOMO”. I thought it was a pretty solid episode and I like that we got to shift the focus to couples we either haven’t explored in a while or at all. I love any moment we see Athena and Bobby together. They’re my favorite couple on the show and I love how settled they are. I love seeing Hen and Karen be happy because things were pretty rocky between them in the first couple of seasons as they dealt with Hen’s infidelity and their fertility issues. Then they had to give Mia back which was soul-crushing. I’m happy they made it out on the other side and are doing well and thriving. I like that we are getting to see Maddie and Chimney co-parent. I like that Maddie is becoming more and more confident in her ability to be a good mom. Of course, I love any scene where we get to see Buck and Maddie chat. We don’t have many sibling relationships on this show so it’s nice to see how they have each other’s back no matter what. Lastly, it’s refreshing to see Eddie and May interact. On the surface they have very little in common, but they are both still processing trauma. May is still learning to cope with her mom being in a profession where her life is constantly put in danger and Eddie is still battling his own demons. They both became dispatchers to protect the people they love. I’m glad they are realizing that they can no longer hide and that they can no longer deny their true calling.

The emergencies were also pretty solid as well. We got the same kind of setup in this week’s Long Star episode. Two of the emergencies turned out to be fine and one ended in tragedy. I know some people watch the show for the character development and some watch for the big emergency scenes. I prefer the episodes where we get a balance. This show has amazing characters and I love getting to visit with them week after week. Next week’s episode is called “May Day” and it looks like May and the rest of the dispatch center may be in danger. Will this be the thing that causes Eddie to return to the 118? I guess we will find out next episode! Until next time …
