Lingthusiasm Episode 100: A hundred reasons to be enthusiastic about linguistics
This is our hundredth episode that's enthusiastic about linguistics! To celebrate, we've put together 100 of our favourite fun facts about linguistics, featuring contributions from previous guests and Lingthusiasm team members, fan favourites that resonated with you from the previous 99 episodes, and new facts that haven't been on the show before but might star in one of the next 100 episodes in greater detail.
In this episode, your hosts Gretchen McCulloch and Lauren Gawne talk about brains, gesture, etymology, famous example sentences, languages by the numbers, a few special facts about the word "hundred" and way more! This episode is both a fun overview of the vibe of Lingthusiam if you've never listened before, and a bonus bingo card game for diehard fans to see how many facts you can recognize.
We also invite you to share this episode alongside one of your favourite fun facts about linguistics and help more people find Lingthusiasm in honour of our 100th episodiversary! Whether you pick something new that resonates from this episode, or share the fact you were sitting on the edge of your seat hoping we'd mention, we look forward to staying Lingthusiastic with you for the next 100 episodes.

Announcements:
In this month’s bonus episode we get enthusiastic about some of our favourite deleted bits from recent interviews that we didn't quite have space to share with you! First, we go back to our interview with phonetician Jacq Jones, previously seen talking about how binary and non-binary people talk. Then, we return to computational linguist Emily M. Bender to talk about how Emily's students made a computational model of Lauren's grammar of Lamjung Yolmo and how linguistics is a team sport. Finally, we return to our group interview with the team behind Tom Scott's Language Files to talk about sneaky Icelandic jokes and the unedited behind-the-scenes version of the gif/gif joke.
Join us on Patreon now to get access to this and 90+ other bonus episodes. You’ll also get access to the Lingthusiasm Discord server where you can chat with other language nerds.

"Timeless" (S05E07, Stardate 52164.3) is an appropriate Voyager 100th episode. It has high concept, time travel (of a sort) big action and a little moral quandry thrown in. And making Harry and Chakotay the central figures was an interesting move that I enjoyed.
For my episode poster I wanted to capture Harry’s attempt to send a message back through time with some echoes.

I'd say the only unrealistic expectation I have for season 7 is for the 100th episode to be a musical lol
Tumblr media
Buck starts singing HSM while Eddie slowly gets more annoyed and Buck accidentally pegs him in the face with a basketball while trying to recreate a dance move 🏀
He feels bad and goes to talk to Maddie
Tumblr media
They have a cute sibling duet that gives him the confidence to go back to Eddie and apologize
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Since it's a musical episode Buck tries to end the apology by singing only for Eddie to tell him no (lmao) and if he really wants to make it up to him, he can do it by helping Chris with his homework while he's picking up extra hours
Tumblr media
Eddie asks Bobby what's up with Buck's singing and Bobby says something about people expressing themselves in different ways idk. Bobby starts singing a little tune while putting away dishes or preparing to cook and Eddie just rolls his eyes
Tumblr media
During homework, Buck tells Chris about what happened at the basketball court and how he tried to apologize to Eddie while getting him to sing but "apparently he doesn't like singing". Chris says "no he does, you just need the right song." Chris then teaches Buck a song his teacher taught his class to help them memorize something for a test or something like that
It's late and Buck goes back to the station to talk to Eddie as soon as he gets off work and apologize again, this time no singing cause he hasn't found the right song yet. Eddie puts his hand on Buck's shoulder and gently tells him it's okay, he's already forgiven, didn't hurt, etc.
Tumblr media
Then to prove he's not upsET EDDIE STARTS SINGING TO BUCK AMD THEY HAVE A BUDDIE DUET THATS GONNA BE BEAUTIFUL AND PROBABLY THE FIRST TIME THE GA WILL SEE THESE TWO IN A SOMEWHAT ROMANTIC LIGHT LETS GOOO!!!! Especially with some new viewers from the network move
Tumblr media
Idk how this went from musical episode to first signs of Buddie canon but here we are. I can put my clown makeup on with my eyes closed lmao
Yes I know some of those scenes are probably from different episodes entirely but I don't care. It's fun to speculate again ✨
Also if the 100th episode isn't exactly like what I said word for word then the show is literally unwatchable. 0/10 would not recommend (for legal and mental reasons this is a joke. And so am I 🤡)

I've been reading about a million articles pertaining to the 100th ep and I literally CANNOT wait (although I am still nervous about the buddie stuff becoming canon). Here are a few different passages/quotes from the press tours leading up to the ep tomorrow that make me think we are getting bi!Buck though: From Us Weekly Entertainment's "9-1-1’s Oliver Stark Says Buck ‘Doesn’t Quite Understand’ His ‘Jealousy’ of Eddie (Exclusive)" - Oliver Stark says his character, Evan “Buck” Buckley, will use his bond with best friend Eddie Diaz to figure out his emotions in 9-1-1 season 7. - “I think it’s almost a feeling of searching or uneasiness, not necessarily with Eddie, but within himself, and it’s easier sometimes to put that onto somebody else than have to do the self-reflection and self-interrogation of, ‘Hey, what am I actually feeling here?’” - quote from Oliver Stark - Stark confessed he felt a sense of responsibility in bringing the story line to life — especially during such a major milestone for the show. - “And I think that’s kind of the story that we’re able to start to tell here, is that Buck isn’t consciously aware of the thing that he’s looking for or what’s lacking in his life,” Stark shared with Us. “And as he hopefully starts to discover that it’s this cathartic, liberating feeling of just being able to ease into it and breathe out this big sigh of relief at last.” - “I like to think it’s somebody that can challenge him, but I think maybe somebody where it’s not too easy for him,” he told Us. “I look back at all his past relationships, and even though he hasn’t necessarily been the one to end them at the beginning, it’s always kind of been pretty easy and smooth sailing for Buck. He’s kind of had a crush, got the person.”
youtube
From Hello!'s "Exclusive: 9-1-1's Oliver Stark previews 'intimate' 100th episode, says it will 'honor these characters'" - Oliver admits the episode will "further his character development a lot".  - "More than anything, I think if [this development] is going to impact the 118 it will only be in a positive sense. Buck has real family to lean on in the 118 and he'll certainly be making use of that; it's a chance for them to all grow as a unit," - a quote from Oliver Stark - But Oliver is certain about one thing: "Buck's journey of self-discovery will, for sure, be a long-running [character arc] but I think I just want to see Buck settled, and proud, of his decisions, and to be able to walk tall and not feel like he needs to hide any part of himself and just be open to being the Buck that makes him." From TV Insider's "‘9-1-1’ Episode 100 Sneak Peek: Buck’s Bothered By Eddie & Tommy’s Plans" - "[the episode] also leans very heavy on character. At this point, we’ll have spent 100 episodes with these characters. It’s nice to let them be and just look at their lives and explore where they are a little bit as we look back and think about all we’ve done and all that culminating.”

This goes without saying as a raging bisexual myself and Evan Buckley lover but if I see ANY negative comments about the contents of tonight’s episode involving the kiss your comment will be deleted and/or account blocked and reported I will not stand for biphobia and harassment
