Today:

Its been almost a whole year since i last made a post here, and in a burst of need for motivation and accountability i decided to reopen this and see how far can we go. I started working out and then quit due to poor scheaduling, couldtn recover but we are working on that, the weather is warming up too. Last year a tried many different things, and for once i think i strayed a bit from kpop as my main fandom. Got some equivalent of a job promotion but from there my scheadule hasnt been propperly arranged. Started some drawing courses, finished none. i read some books too. Started playing board games and now i go out with some friends every few weeks. it was pretty eventful for me but its hard to fully grasp reign on it myself. theres many things i fear, many i want to do. i think the herdest thing here is that i need to constantly exert big amounts of energy and power to keep the ball rolling otherwise it gets messy really quick, specially me who has the tendencies to overthink a lot. I started playing videogames again. so my msot recent obsession is persona 5. i started reading blue period again. its wonderful in so many ways, i fully recommend it to anyone who likes art, and as i begin again i have to step down on my goals to fully set them down propperly so thats why my goals today are tiny, and im building a new PC

In my game “Arcana”, Experience Point (XP) Levelling is the standard, but it is handled differently than to how most other games handle it.

In Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition, XP Levelling is primarily used as a reward for killing monsters. The higher the monster’s “Challenge Rating” (CR), the more XP you get after killing them.

Brennan Lee Mulligan, a popular Dungeon Master, comedian, writer, producer and a whole other load of shtuff, working for Dropout TV (formally, CollegeHumour), has stated his opinions on this. If I remember correctly he basically told it as a young mage needing to learn magic, instead of studying, they just go out and kill a fuck load of goblins to get better. Which can work for damaging magic I guess but for other skills, it doesn’t make much sense.

I’ve gotten around this with one simple idea, “XP via usage”. What does this mean? Well, let’s say you are learning boxing. You don’t take it super seriously and only practice about once a week. Now let’s say there’s another guy who’s also learning boxing, but he has way more time and takes it way more seriously. He practices 5 days out of the week, taking the weekends as rest days to chill at home with his boyfriend or something, idk. He would get better far faster than you.

Back into game speak, you would get 1xp over the time period, while he would get 5xp. The more you use a skill over a certain time period (a day, a week, a month), you’ll get certain xp values toward that skill.

My values are thus:

Unused: 0xp

Barely Used: 1xp

Moderately Used: 2.5xp

Very Used: 3.5xp

Extremely Used: 5xp

These xp values are given by the Game Master to the player toward that skill at the end of a predetermined amount of time. A day would make levelling up very fast. A week would make it a tad slower. A month would make it very slow. A year would be mental torture.

All of your skills start at Level 0. Once a skill levels up, your XP for that skill goes back to 0.

The XP requirements for each level are as follows:

Level 1: 5xp

Level 2: 10xp

Level 3: 15xp

Level 4: 20xp

Level 5: 25xp

Level 6: 30xp

Level 7: 35xp

Level 8: 40xp

Level 9: 45xp

Level 10: 50xp

Level 11: 55xp

Level 12: 60xp

Level 13: 65xp

Level 14: 70xp

Level 15: 75xp

Level 16: 80xp

Level 17: 85xp

Level 18: 90xp

Level 19: 95xp

Level 20: 100xp

For weapon and magic skills, every other level (starting at Level 2) gives you an ability that lets you do more with that skill, obviously. Additionally, every level you have in a magic skill unlocks more powerful spells of that type. My goal right now is to have 2 spells per level for every magic type except ruination. And for ruination, I want 1 spell of every damage type per level (just so people can play mono-elemental ruination casters like pyromancers, cryomancers, stuff like that).

No, because the difference is that Vampire actually does, and has the design to back that up. Want an action game? Make combat-oriented characters, pick your paths/chronicle tenets to support violence not being a degen and maybe take merits/loresheets to support that, and have plenty of fighty enemies in game. Want an introspective game? Build PCs with high path ratings/humanity, probably at lower XP, and take a lot of backgrounds and merits that tie you into human NPCs. Want a political drama? Build ancillae with dots of status and maybe some titles, as well as the merits that define their place in the Camarilla structure, and then have the GM put a bit more thought into what the court NPCs are doing. Want a high-wierd gonzo conspiracy nonsense game? Crack open the Black Hand book and use all the wacky shit in there. That's the thing, because there's so much vampire, and it's design is so all over the place, by picking which bits of the setting you engage with and what sorts of PCs you play as, you get a dramatically different experience. Like, a game as 0xp caitiff fledgelings is going to play wildly differently to one as 100xp camarilla primogen where you all get 15 extra dots of backgrounds and alongside your title, which is itself going to play wildly differently to one where you play a Sabbat pack on extremely inhuman paths in Camarilla territory. Just because D&D players are wrong about their game being flexible doesn't mean every game isn't flexible: some games legitimately do contain a lot of different playstyles.

The default rpg that's used as a yardstick, in my view, is not D&D. It's Vampire The Masquerade 20th Aniversary Edition.

It has everything: Action! Melodrama! Politics! Intrigue! Horror! Romance! Bleak Social Realism!

Still want a fantasy game with swords and dragons? We got that, it's called Dark Ages Vampire!

When pitching me a game, the big hurdle you need to overcome is "why am I not running this in Vampire?" Call of Cthulhu? Vampire has plenty of cosmic-horror tentacle monster cults, just throw a hidden baali cell into your setting. D&D? Play a dark ages game and all be members of a vampiric order. Monsterhearts? That's just standard Camarilla Toreador behaviour! Paranoia? The prince is a malkavian, have fun. Rolemaster? That's just dark ages again, and trust me our mechanics are fiddly and pedantic too.

Being picky and don't want to play a vampire? No problem, there's a splat-book for playing as regular mortals, who may or may not have psychic powers.

Seriously, Vampire: The Masquerade has so much range as a game. Even more if you throw in bits of other WoD gamelines or elements from v5. Mage even has sci-fi space explorers fighting tentacle monsters on the surface of jupiter and I am not joking.

This is not a bit or a funny joke. I genuinely, 100% believe that Vampire is a better Default Game that can Do Everything than D&D and its imitators.

If, for some reason, you deal with everyone peacefully but decide to beat Spamton up (transmit my kromer back you awful little man), the dialogue during the fight is just spam text ("ENL4RGE YOURSELF", "TRANSMIT KROMER" etc) but afterwards, you get something different.

His shop is locked and I haven't checked the rest of the game but I'm guessing he's probably not accessible at all if you do this. (Do I go for a fourth run in which the only difference is that I beat Spamton up? Hmmm.) Still, it's interesting that he mentions that you are too late with all the violence and missed your chance to do a weird run.

*surprisingly the two end up in a fight with Frogitt. With their souls appearing out their bodies*

Frogitt: ribbit ribbit

Sanna: wow *she’s in a looking at her soul* 

Fadia: Waht th- look out!

*it seems like frogitt already began to dish out magic attacks, the bullets manage to graze Sanna but hit Fadia*

Fa: 17/20 Hp

Fadia: ow that’s hurts, hmm. (what do these buttons do?) *she looks at the four buttons, attack act item and mercy. She chooses the attack option and was only able to do one damage*

*it now seems to be Sanna turn* 

Sanna: wow.. *she snaps out of her trance and looks at the buttons* hmmm?

Fadia: You could hmm ru-

*but san already chose the act option and was looking between compliments and intimidation. She decided to intimidate it*

Sanna: RRRAAARRR!

*Frogitt didn’t understand what she was saying but was scared anyway. Frogitt was a bit less successful this turn unable to hit the two humans* 

Fadia: you’re doing great Sanna, I guess we should try to intimidate it.

Sanna: Yeah Fabia!

Fadia: you’ll get it right next time…

*they both decided to intimidate Frogitt until it ran away*

Sanna: Fadia you ok? *she’s sitting next to Fadia*

Fadia: huh? Oh hmmm what’s going on?

Sanna: I don’t know I think we came from up there *points above them* 

Fadia: Oooooh right… Sanna what were you thinking back THERE!?

Sanna: I just wanted to prove I could do it!?

*The two kept arguing for a bit before continuing on to the next room*  

Fadia: an patch of grass? Say Sanna stay behind me. *she went to grab something out of her bag*

Sanna: I can handle myself! *turned her back towards Fadia well walking forward. Been bumping into Someone?*
