Studies in many countries have found that needing glasses or having the wrong prescription (usually that means wearing old glasses when eyesight has worsened over time) is one of the main causes for school failure. A study by Spain's General Council of Optometrists concluded that 30% of school failure is due to this. I don't know how accurate the number is since it's a study by an organisation with monetary interest in the matter, but regardless of how accurate the exact number is, there's no doubt that it's a problem. I had it myself for some time when I was in high school, and when I finally got glasses and could see the blackboard, school suddenly became so much easier (I could accurately write down notes and didn't spend so long trying to figure out what it says that I didn't have time to write down all the relevant information, thus I could study for exams with all the information needed, and without all the headache given by the effort). School would become so much easier to so many people with the simple change of getting glasses.

Other countries and age groups have found the same. According to Johns Hopkins University (USA):

The American Academy of Ophthalmology estimates that 80 percent of all learning during a child's first 12 years comes through the eyes. Now consider that 10 percent of preschoolers and 25 percent of kids in grades K through six have vision deficiencies, according to the American Public Health Association. Furthermore, many youngsters are misdiagnosed with learning disabilities when they actually have an undetected vision problem.

A study conducted with over 3,000 students in China found that providing free glasses to school children significantly improved their performance in mathematics. They found that whether the children group was given free glasses had an even bigger impact on the child's results than how much education their parents have or family wealth.

This is a problem for all people, because it can be difficult to detect that you see worse than you're supposed to (unless it was a quick deterioration or you have compared your sight with others, you're used to how you see so you often assume that's the normal way to see). It's even worse in the case of children, because they might be less aware of eye problems and in some cases adults don't react when they are told by the child or when they see the clues that the child doesn't see well enough. But, above all, it's also a class issue that is way worse in "third world countries", rural areas, and poor families who can't afford the glasses or a visit to the eye doctor.

Poor vision is the most common impairment affecting school aged children in the developing world, comprising 48% of all disability among children aged 5 to 9 years in the India census of 2001. (source)

Myopia is on the rise, it has even been called the 21st century pandemic. Same way as some countries already provide a free dentist visit in schools, it would be very useful if schools also had an eye doctor come in to make sure all children are checked. Of course, adding eye doctors to the free universal healthcare system is also very important to ensure everyone can get the treatment they need.

Going back to OP's point, none of this means that people who wear glasses in "1st world countries" should be necessarily considered disabled, but bad eye sight can definitely be a disability and have consequences, and there are things we can do to make it better. I wish I could have had these things when I was in high school!

Made the mistake of bringing up that needing glasses is a disability on tiktok and people got real mad.

Like, by definition, if your eyes do not work without aid, you have a disability to see.

Having a disability doesn’t automatically put you in what people consider the “disabled” category, but that doesn’t change the fact that it is in fact, a disability.

apologies for not posting the last few days, i was super stressed and just spent every day studying physics. it was actually kinda depressing haha,, took the exam today and it went ok. should get more than enough to pass but i'll only be able to truly relax once i see the grade :P

"Just one date?" James asks desperately, wide eyes so sincere that Regulus almost accepts.

Almost.

"No," he mumbles instead, frowning. Because he knows that James Potter, campus-renowned player and football star, can't possibly want to actually date him. The other boy obviously just has some fascination with the idea of wearing him down before leaving him alone. So it's much easier to turn him down before he gets hurt. "I have to study, Potter. I have a huge exam on Monday."

There. That should be enough to get the other boy off his back. Turning and moving to stop away, he's surprised when a hand grabs lightly at his wrist- enough to stop him but not enough to trap him there.

"A study date, then?" James pleads as Regulus eyes him again, and the suggestion makes Regulus pause.

Because he's never, not once seen James Potter in the library.

"You want to have a study date?" he asks suspiciously, even as the more hopeful part of him swells with something akin to joy.

"Sure. I- I'll quiz you. Read to you! Sit there quietly and stare out the window while you study," James says nodding as grinning. "Anything you want. I just want to spend time with you, Reg."

And the way he speaks causes Regulus to smile softly. Because it's so genuine, he believes him, even against his better judgement. "I'm studying geography," he warns, making sure James knows it's not the most interesting of subjects.

"Perfect! I love rocks and stuff," James grins.

Chuckling, Regulus doesn't have the heart to tell him he's probably thinking of geology. "Meet me in study room four tomorrow at one. And wear something comfortable, we're going to be there for a while," he warns with a smile.

Of course, as it turns out, they don't end up getting a lot of studying done the next day, but that's a different story.

"So how well did you do in the exam, Sev?"Lily asks excitedly.

Severus makes a dramatic pause, but is hiding a smile, then he shows her his paper: "An easy A+"

Lily, who didn't sleep to study all night, blushes. But she still shows her friend her own exam.

"An A - . But just barely. Physics is not my strongest subject"

It is the most difficult subject for everyone. Because their professor gives them the most horrible examinations. Everyone is torn up after it has ended. Lily knows some of her classmates even cried.

Severus touches her shoulder "You did great, Lily. It was a general difficult exam. You know how Frumentar is"

He doesn't sound like he made much effort. While Lily is exhausted for cracking her head up during the exam. She feels like a fool for trying so hard when others make it look so easy.

It should have been an A+. Lily feels like a failure.

That's when she hears them. The Marauders.

Peter sounds very stressed "I can't believe you got an A+. An A+!! It was the most difficult exam I've ever done"

"Easy peacy, I tell you" James grins.

"But you didn't even study!" Peter protests "We stayed until late with Remus revising it all"

James shrugs "The exam had everything Frumentar gave us in class. Nothing out of this world"

Peter groans, reflecting Lily's annoyance. How dares he? James Potter is Lily's number one enemy for a reason.

"How did you guys do?" James is asking to his friends.

Peter hides his paper. Sirius and Remus look at each other.

"C+" Remus sighs "I knew I could do better"

Lily would have died if she got a C+. She had never been lower than a B+.

"Same" Sirius hits Remus's palm. He doesn't look perturbed like him though "I don't worry. Grades are stupid. School sucks. It's all about the great things you do in life" he winks "Like Steve Jobs, for example. Did you know he left school?"

"I bet Steve Jobs didn't have a mother that would kill him" Peter whines.

"What did you get, Wormy?" Sirius asks putting an arms around him.

"I'm not sharing my grade" Peter blushes.

"It's okay, boys" James exclaims "Not everyone can be a genius like me"

Lily's blood boils. She really hates him. How come he is great at everything without moving a stupid finger? Some people are great academically but suck at sports. Like Severus. Others are great at Gymnastics but aren't that good at school. Like Marlene.

Although James Potter is good at both. And Lily hates him for that.

James Potter, Severus and her are always competing to be the top of their class. And it might be stupid. But Lily wants to win. All the time.

"I bet he has the teachers bought, Lily. Don't worry" Severus says, sensing Lily's anger.

"Let's just go, Sev"

Lily is so so angry and frustrated that when she passes by and James says "Hey, Evans" in the cheeky way he always does, she groans openly.

"How did you do in the exam?"

"Fuck off!!"

Argenti would totally check in on you. Giving you water and snacks every hour or so and making sure you aren't over working yourself. If you happen to fall asleep at your desk he'll carry you to bed.

If studying happens to become very stressful to you he's quick to pull you away and urge you to relax. These exams may be important to you, but your more important to him. He can't stand to see you upset about these exams and ignoring your needs. So he'll take care of you.

Boothill I feel would defo try to get you to relax. Of course not make you completely forget about your studies but he knows that if you spend too much time studying w/o a break. That in itself could be a problem

He knows you should study, especially if these exams are important to you, but there should always be time for yourself to relax your mind. So if he thinks you've been overworking yourself too much or have spent to many hours with no break studying? You bet he's dragging your ass out for a nice walk

Dr Ratio helps you. I mean he is a teacher. He's able to help. He'll slow down, he'll write, he'll do whatever it takes for you to understand the topic and be confident in your exams. Of course I feel he'll still be strict but if he sees you're struggling he wants to help.

He may be strict but he genuinely wants to help, in any way possible. If it means taking it slow or using visual references so be it. He wants to make sure you go into that exam with as little stress as possible. And whatever grade you get he'll be proud of you because he knows you tried. And that's all that matters to me, that you tried.

He'll still be proud of you

Imagine sleeping on Jing Yuans chest or lap after a long day of studying and/or exams. He'd let you. He's probably sleeping as well honestly. You deserve the sleep anyways, to relax your body after a stressful day

Dan Heng defo also helps you study. He sees what you're struggling on the most and spends time teaching you so you can grasp it, even just a little. He'll give you small tests. Nothing too long, maybe 10-20 minutes. On different chapters you're going to be tested on. He checks them and goes through the ones you got wrong. Slowly you'll seen an improvement as the cycle of him teaching you the topics you didn't know, getting a small test and seeing where you went wrong repeats.

I'd love to hug him after a long day exams and just be held by his tail ngl, he might let that happen
