why do they get to hinge your well-being and survival on anything though. Like you said, 18 year olds don't have the funds to live on their own. Their parents deciding the moment they hit 18 that if they don't do everything perfectly, they're going to be kicked out is nuts. Here's what happened when I turned 18:

I had to go to college (which there was no public transportation for and I can't drive because I'm disabled)

I had to work (which still took months to get going because disabled)

I had to do all the chores (and was the only one doing so because I "had the time" while everyone else was at their 9-5s. This was often while I was supposed to be at class)

This already took at least 10 hours but lets not forget the few hours of homework I had as well. And I had no weekend due to my schedule. It is not unreasonable to want the adult in your house to do these things but my mother also

Refused to take parental controls off any of my devices even tho they actively hindered my school work due to blocking websites I needed (and she would not unblock them) (and I was a grown adult, who she also had no reason to have them to the degree she did when I was younger either. I had literally never done a thing on my devices, as she herself would and does attest)

Get pissed off about the fact I needed to be taken to school even tho she didn't want me to drive. She blamed this on my not finding public transportation. She herself agreed there was none

I was not allowed to have a voice in arguments. Even tho I was an adult (this continued past 18 just for the record) I was not allowed to voice why I had done things or why certain things hadn't worked. I was threatened with "you can leave (I will make you)" and she had on multiple occasions kicked me out to "take a walk". It was a "polite" way of saying gtfo of my house, which she didn't even always bother with. The moment I turned 18 it was fair game to threaten to put me on the streets, because yes, that's exactly where I would've been.

Even tho I contributed payment I was not allowed ownership of my own things. Every single person in the house would come in my room and do what they wanted, would take my things. No one else in the house experienced this. Side note, I also had the only door without a lock.

And throughout all this I was also in constant pain and ill because our world is not made for disabled ppl, which even tho the ppl around me recognized me as such, refused to give me the accommodations they also recognized I needed. I have memory problems. My mother refused to recognize them and claimed I just didn't care. I forgot to take out the trash? I can leave (be kicked out). I didn't finish all the dusting in a few minutes because I'm sick from standing? Doesn't matter. I can leave.

My mom is a great mom. She really is. But the moment I turned 18 it was like this switch was flipped. She was still great but suddenly there was no patience. There was no care for things she had previously cared about. There was also no loosening of the grip she'd had on me my whole life, as I also wasn't allowed to leave the house without her permission. The sad truth is, in the US, parents do not often want you there once you're 18. Even if they love you. So no, they will kick you out. And yes, college and good grades is too much. Your life should not be dependant on your grades (and it is your life). Being homeless WILL fuck you and if you are kicked out it is nigh guaranteed you will be homeless. Who are you going to crash with? All your friends live with their parents. You have nowhere near enough money to live anywhere, the dorms won't accept you especially halfway thru the year, no way are you going to find a roommate situation that fast. Shelters are a whole other issue that I don't even want to get into right now, and they aren't everywhere. You will be homeless. And it will be over your grades. Do you really think that's ok? The world we live in needs serious change before ppl can just be kicked out. It's heartless to say that anything justifies homelessness

i fucking hate people who are like "no one has a right to live alone, just have roommates if you can't afford it, i had them for so long" etc because every single person my age that i know has a horrific roommate/housemate story. i genuinely believe that being able to afford living alone is deeply important for human dignity and also like, sanity, and i also think you should be able to throw your roommate out of a window if needs must

The Wicked musical, for a 2003 liberal fantasy that wants to deal with racism without actually having to talk about racism in our world today, is actually pretty interesting in the ways in which it functions as a form of gay and racial allegory that very much does not treat those two things as if they’re the same issue, which a lot of “you’ve been different your whole life and everyone has always hated you for it” type stories at the time, and a bunch to this day, are guilty of, so that they don’t actually have to get into anything more specific.

Elphaba has been scorned and tormented ever since the literal second of her birth for something she cannot change or hide. She’s from a wealthy background, but doesn’t play nice with others. She has an absurd amount of talent, but that only serves to make her more of a target, as she is only seen as someone of worth when she can do something for more powerful people around her. Her otherness is only forgivable when she is being exemplary, because being just as good as everyone else is not good enough when you’re different. Elphaba can’t hide, but she also doesn’t really have to cover up what Glinda was to her. She loses nothing if everyone knows that Glinda was kind to her, or that she was the one to insist Glinda be allowed to learn magic. She has significantly more experience with marginalization, even as the daughter of a prominent government official, than Glinda does, and it changes the way she interacts with the world.

Glinda is rich, blonde, charismatic, and gets her way always. She’s not the most talented, but she’s not uniquely restricted or handicapped in anyway whatsoever. She’s privileged, and the only thing she ever does that’s out of line is care about the wrong person. Glinda can, and does, hide that thing that makes her different. The thing that makes her stand out from the rest of Oz is something that she can ignore in order to make herself look better. Yes, she’ll be alone and unhappy, but she has her job, and her popularity, and she can have everything she’s ever wanted. Because, regardless of whether you think it’s romantic or plutonic, Glinda is closeted. Her feelings about Elphaba leave her to mourn alone in a crowd of celebrating people.

jeonghan: smug, smug, smug! smirking into the kiss, fingers twitching as he resists the urge to pull you in, deeper. continues to smirk as you return to your seat and get settled back in. makes a show of running his thumb over his bottom lip as he looks in to the camera.

joshua: confused! freezes in place thinking you’re planning to trick him or do something for the show, but when you lean in and kiss him he softens and gives you a kiss back. ears turning red as he pretends to be cool and suave. waving a hand to thank everyone when the studio claps and cheers.

jun: stunned! eyes wide open, mouth puckered and completely frozen to his seat. he was not expecting this from you. his brain is completely fried and will be speaking in stutters and incoherent sentences for the rest of the program.

hoshi: he’s so giddy that you’re kissing him he forgets his current situation. gives you smalls pecks back all while letting out loud giggles. when you’ve had your fill and move away from him he wipes the excess spit from his moth with the back of his hand, feet wiggling the entire time.

wonwoo: doesn’t see it coming. literally. he’s not wearing his glasses so when you move in to kiss him he almost dodges you completely. it’s only when he feels your hands on his head, keeping him in place, does he realize what’s happening. let’s you kiss him as you please and when your finished he just can’t stop grinning

woozi: eyebrows immediately raised in surprise. he’s not overly physically affectionate, especially not publicly so he isn’t sure what to do or say. can’t help but go “oh?” when you release him from the smooch

dk: someone else who starts off confused and then just melts when you give him a soft kiss. a soft giggle leaves his mouth and he’s looking at you like you are his whole world. isn’t able to focus on anything else because he’s too busy staring at you, touching his lips, or quietly giggling to himself. ends up needing your help to complete the show

mingyu: flustered of course. he’s incredibly affectionate so he has no issues with your kiss, but he is incredibly easy to embarrass. ears are red as soon as you move in close to him. constant whispers of shy “why? why? why?”s as you lean in. as soon as you give him a peck he’s kicking his feet back and forth, his entire body fidgeting giddily. continues to hold your hand and be as physically affectionate as possible 

the8: tries to stay calm but isn’t great at keeping a poker face. the minute you plant your lips on him to the time you release him his fingers are fidgeting and he’s trying to contain his happy laughter. 

seungkwan: the theatrics! he will be loud with his surprise. yelling about why would you do that, how he’s utterly embarrassed and now no one is going to take him seriously and also how he loves you and you’re so cute and sweet. cheeks are on fire and he’ll be huffing and puffing erratically for a while because he’s so overwhelmed.

vernon: slow to react, torn between wanting to kiss you back and preserving his idol image. avoiding eye contact with the hosts as he continually nods, pretending to listen to what’s being said to him while trying to process what just happened. 

dino: just happy to be here, honestly. equally parts thrilled that you’re confident enough to embrace him so publicly and embarrassed that you did it in front of his older brothers and everyone watching the program.

NEVE GALLUS THE WOMAN THAT YOU ARE

neve gallus is a lower class mage who had a good relationship with, as far as she has said in either of my runs so far, one relative - her uncle. her family considered her a ladder to climb for better prospects, and she isn't on good terms with them.

instead, she has her community. neve is analytical, focused, near obsessive when something catches her attention, to a degree that sometimes puts her in immense danger. she's self-reliant, to a deleterious degree. she's too in her own head. as are all the companions. she's incredibly dedicated, and once she takes a job she is seeing it through, no matter the cost. she's playful, clever, achingly compassionate and loyal and gentle. she's a, to borrow her term, sap. It's dangerous to be open with that in her life, so she is very selective about who she lets see that side of herself. It is a 'weakness' that can be exploited, and is, by Aelia.

she worries about people who are openly earnest and emotive. she worries so much.

neve shields her heart behind a layer of ice, and depending on which city is saved it's thinner or thicker.

she has decided that protecting dock town is her job. that if nothing else, she can do this. this one part of minrathous is hers to watch over, the people in it are hers to protect - we'll come back to that - and even if the city is a festering hive cf corruption and injustice, she will do whatever she can to make this one part of it better.

neve is a detective, yeah. she's also a protector, a defender of her community. just by moving through the world, she builds bonds between people. she demonstrates that a better world is possible.

she maintains connection with the people she helps. she puts them in contact with others who might help them. she's the queen of mutual aid, for everyone except herself.

on a deep level, neve gallus does not consider herself someone worth showing up for. because when people do, historically, they get hurt. or worse. and otherwise, they're out to use her for their own ends.

even at a baseline, with minrathous intact, there is so much guilt in her. so much anger. deep, simmering fury against the injustice that declares her better than her neighbors, the people she has helped, for being born a mage. she uses it, because she uses anything she can take and run with to improve circumstances around her. but she specifically often does not wear robes, she eschews a traditional staff, and while she uses her magic to help people it is her mind first and foremost that she relies on.

she lives humbly, in an apartment that is apparently very close to her room in the lighthouse, demonstrating that she's very in tune what she needs. mysteries to solve and inconvenient but friendly companionship to break her attention from time to time in the form of the wisps. (fade cats......beloved fade cats) the sound of the sea.

neve's issue isn't what she does, it's not her devotion to her community and her work, it's that she doesn't look after herself and she doesn't let anyone else do it either. when she is in pain she throws herself immediately into helping others, she pulls back to a surface level of friendliness with those she is closest too and professionalism with everyone else.

like many of the crew, and also solas (the whole team have things in common with that man's maladaptive methodology), she takes on entirely too much responsibility and doesn't let anyone help her. she doesn't expect anyone to want too, not really. and if they offer, well, they clearly don't know what they're in for. she has an impeccably assembled facade, both literal and metaphorical.

she dresses expensively when we meet her - but that's her best dress, and it's is a gift from a tailor she saved. she lives case to case. she knows that dressing like she's wealthy is something that will protect and open doors for her, which is a very real phenomenon that's desperately unfair. neve projects power and authority that she does not have in order to get the job done.

she projects an image of herself as aloof and unapproachable because she thinks it is dangerous to be close to her, and because it hurts her very deeply when people DO get close, and then are lost because they try to help. so for everyone's protection, she holds herself away from others.

she takes on so much responsibility that, like bellara, it skirts the edge of arrogance. at the start of the game she doesn't see the full extent of the effect she has on others, how she inspires and rallies them to show up for each other.

she is haunted by her past mistakes, by those she was unable to save. by the people who got away and went right back to hurting others.

words are cheap and often hollow, especially in minrathous. action is not. neve needs to see people showing up for her. she needs to see that people care through demonstration of sustained interest and effort before she'll truly let her guard down.

neve can go through so so much. in my first run, she certainly did. her home was devastated, as a start. but she showed up for her city, again and again. she kept as much of it safe as she could, and by the end of that run, she had allowed herself to ask for help.

for neve gallus to ask for help is a sign of her trust, and im very proud of her.

Not to mention a person with very, very unstable mental health who tragically just went further and further down after being smashed into superstardom - which trajectory ended on a really traumatic note for everyone involved. He was a mentally ill person whose actions in the past months/years might have been lashing out in frustration or cries for help or possible red flags for s*icidal thoughts. Yet he is reported (fuck TMZ btw for immediately capitalizing on sg like this) to have been found alone weeks after his death. Adding that nobody seems to have missed him for weeks? and the hate replies and kys 'jokes?' from literal KIDS on twitter to the mix just makes the whole issue all the more messy and sad.

If you claim yourself an mcr fan and sent hate msgs to anyone!!! struggling with mental health EVER, let alone a former member of a band you claim to love, and especially a band so outspoken about mental health awareness and s*icide prevention, I have no excuses for you. Go fuck yourself. Life is no fucking game or a meme pool, people are no darts boards of your own frustrations, grow the fuck up or SHUT the fuck up. I'm sick to my stomach learning about those actions.

Anybody 'celebrating' his death should just consider for a fucking SECOND (even if you don't have the emotional intelligence to consider that he probably has a family mourning and in deep regret right now) what the guys must be going through these moments. Right after letting the whole world know they are about to tour on and celebrate the legacy of the album that he played an essential part in. Regardless of what might have gone down among them back in the day, it must be very uncomfortable and frankly, devastating, for the boys to hear about the way his life ended. I hope the family and the guys are taking care of themselves.

Honestly I was always neutral about Bob while he was a member, and again, no excuses for some shitty things he said and believed in, but he WAS a great musician and the best album of the century would NOT be the same without his contribution. At least respect that, if nothing else.

I'm just sad that he doesn't have the chance to turn his life and wrongdoings around now. 44 is way too young to go.

Mmmmm no it’s definitely framed that way to begin with but the more villages and cities she visits the more they all seem to be governed solely by their lords (jo9/church influence aside) it’s probably the classics major in me but I always interpret the way the world functions in terms of the Ancient Greek City States which had alliances and colonies but functioned as individually governed kingdoms most of which were monarchies or oligarchies which eventually transitioned to democracies. (In my head I like to think of the Scaleswind-O’Khasis relationship as ancient Athens and Sparta)

My main gripe is the whole Irene dismantling the monarchy and establishing lordships thing is introduced at the height of S2 (I think?) when lordships very much are functioning as hereditary monarchies. It’s also more a linguistic issue than anything else but that’s just because I’m a linguistics girly.

good god girl, maybe some of us are not vegan because we eat chicken like once in three months?? Would reduction not be a more productive goal of vegan activism than outright banning? Like if your arguments are that animals are being eaten, then you’re being unrealistic about the entire actual concept of the food chain. Humans are omnivores, you do not need to change that to achieve your goals.

A vegan lifestyle is also entirely the product of your geographical location. If you live somewhere that shit does not grow, what are you going to do?? I just think about the difference between food options in India and Canada, for example. India: between the tropics (tropics and equator even, in fact). All-year-round sun, there’s pretty much always stuff growing. Different kinds of land will mean you can grow everything from staples like rice and wheat to vegetables, fruits and plantation crops. It’s reflected in the cuisines: Indian food has a much, much wider offering of vegetarian food, and many more Indians have restricted diets that more or less overlap with vegetarianism. Because crops grows. Locally.

Canada. Harvest in the fall, from November to March, your fields are practically unusable. Compare the prices of fresh produce in (and now I’m being generous to give you a highly populated, non-remote province here for an example) Ontario. Ontario has farms where in the fall you get fresh autumn vegetables and fruits. You’ll also get them in larger quantities. It is way cheaper, fresher and also uses less energy and fuel to transport the vegetables like 50 km from farm to market.

Come the winter and nothing grows. If you look at most vegetables you’ll find on store shelves in December or February, and most of it is either imported from warmer regions of the US (often the case for chains that are in both countries) or from South American countries (sometimes SA -> USA -> Canada). The importing has to go through cross-country customs, had to be driven for days, is less fresh or rich in nutrients by the time you get it, and is more expensive. Of course. And we all come out of it poorer. Is it any wonder why people will eat meat? We’re even talking here about a place like Ontario, very well connected on North American trade routes. Can you justify someone in Yukon deciding to eat meat over a $17/lb. green veg? Be for fucking real…

There simply cannot be a blanket-global solution to animal products. You’ve got to work with what your geography has to offer. It’s the same thing we say when we say that avocados have an environmental cost when you expect them to be available year-round in places they don’t grow. We encourage people to go for more local produce there, and I think the same should go for all parts of your diet too. If your animals are local, then their footprint is lower than importing kiwis from New Zealand to the US. I don’t see how that’s hard to understand.

with my phantom hourglass replay, there are two things i noticed;

a possible theme you could glean from the game is action vs inaction, and i think it's especially prevalent before you even leave mercay the first time, with oshus frequently urging link to not go after the ghost ship, then to just wait until the broken bridge is fixed, and seems reluctant at every turn while link and ciela are more than eager to go and do something about this problem, and the people of mercay in general talking about things and their problems but never seeming to act on their fears or desires, as well as the mention that due to the ghost ship, very very few people are still sailing around, while linebeck is one of the only people we see in the game actively going after the ghost ship and still sailing around. i might make a longer post just talking more about the action vs inaction in phantom hourglass but i just noticed it a bit and thought it was a bit of an interesting sort of theme you could find in the game.

linebeck moves so fucking much. i think he moves more than any npc in the rest of the game. not just in his intro cutscene where he is very animated, just in how much he moves when just standing in his little idle post, it's damn near distracting when the camera is focused on him, he moves a lot. i don't think i've really acknowledged how much he moves, and it really gives the impression that he's antsy or eager to get going, both of which fit him pretty well with how he acts.

Sort of. Kind of. I do think it was about BB, and we know the lyrics are written by Kaz.

I don't know if we ever find out all the languages that BB speaks, obviously English, Russian, Spanish, that leaves iirc 3 more languages he speaks, and I don't know if Japanese is ever confirmed as one.

It seems likely given that he speaks to Kojima in PW, and that BB speaking other languages is translated for the player, but Venom also speaks to him and gets a verbal response in TPP, and we know that was in English due to [mumbled summary of TPP plot]. That's probably the closest we get to confirmation.

Anyways my point with that is, I tend to think that BB doesn't speak Japanese, at least not around Kaz, and Kaz intentionally wrote Love Deterrence in a language he didn't think BB knew so that he could get his feelings out without the utter mortification of actually sharing them.
