Green lantern uniforms being (relatively) up to the bearer is so funny cause that means they all chose to look like that. Negative a million fashion sense amongst the lantern corps

Watching Invincible reminded me of something I completely forgot about Green Lanterns, which is that they can manipulate matter.
For those not in the know, GLs basically have the same powers as Eve, just on a much greater scale and limited time determined by both their ring charge and willpower.
Back in the Silver Age(?), Hal turned a friend of his into a bird just by dreaming. Which is probably not the most notable thing but I will be forever wondering what dream could possibly cause that to happen.

On the topic of Hal Jordan being maybe a bit better than anyone gives him credit for…
[I’m kidding ofc, we all know he’s a great guy, but bear with me for the sake of this post hahaha]
⚠️ Spoilers for Green Lantern #5 ⚠️
I get it, y’all, I really do. Hal can be pushy when it comes to love. And pretty undeserving of the love he pushes for because I mean how good is a guy that keeps professing his love to the same girl only to ditch her for long and unspecified stretches of time. Like of course, Carol keeps moving on, Hal, there’s absolutely no reason why she should wait around for some guy that loves her, but still leaves her! But hear me out…
Maybe Hal being pushy doesn’t actually change the fact that he’s a good guy. Maybe his pushiness is sincere. And maybe, just maybe, he’s a big enough person to set the whole “all is fair in love and war” thing aside to do what’s right and that’s what makes him so dang hard to resist.
So, this all stems from the latest issue of Green Lantern by Jeremy Adams and Xermánico which features Hal setting out to put a stop to Sinestro’s reign of terror across the earth. Hal’s first stop is Ferris Air as Sinestro has taken over all their unmanned drones to enact his plan. Carol catches Hal up on the situation and as he’s leaving to do his superheroics Carol hands him some nifty new communicators designed by her new fiance, Nate, y’know, the guy that Hal has been at one-sided odds with since the first issue of this new run. Hal, predictably, makes a snide little Hal-comment about Nate being smart and Carol, predictably, gives him no rope when she shortly replies that he’s “very” smart. I’ll always love these terse little exchanges between them.
Tumblr media
Hal later runs into the problem of the last two drones being too far away from each other, and too close to their intended targets, for him to reach them in time. This leads to him coming up with the idea of putting his piloting skills, and indomitable will, to the test by simultaneously sending two constructs in opposite directions to catch the last two drones. Carol puts Nate on the line, and this is where my admiration for Hal, and Adams as a writer, grows considerably, as rather than getting another typical Hal remark we get a man on a mission.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hal doesn’t care who’s guiding him in, he doesn’t care that he’s lost the love of his life (for no reason other than his own hubris) and that the one who has earned her love is now talking to him one-on-one. Rather than taking the easy drama route of giving Hal yet another opportunity to undercut his latest rival, Adams instead opts for the much more in-character route of having Hal just be the hero that he is. Hal’s only care is that there are people in trouble and Nate is the only person who can help him. And man, do they make a great team.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And this is a fact that neither gets nor needs any particular highlighting from the story itself. No remarks about Nate being the one to guide Hal in are made. Nothing is said about how well Hal followed directions from his rival-in-love. And that’s kinda my favorite part of all of this, the conclusion that I’ve come to, that Hal is not in the least bit petty and is a wholly honorable person, is not a conclusion that the story busies itself with proving. It just is. Hal just is a hero. He just is a good guy. He just does the right thing because that’s the right thing to do and, man, does that make it hard to say no to him.

"space case": the pre-2005 martin jordan
these days the quintessential hal jordan is easily defined by two traits: a distinct lack of fear, and a penchant for wearing his father's air force jacket. hal's father is his hero, you all know that. or, that's what you've been led to believe by the post-2005 geoff johns era of green lantern that has completely overshadowed everything that had come before and worked hard to erase the slightest hint of friction between hal & his father.
first things first, the post-2005 continuity can be looked at as half a fanboy's wish and half editorial mandate -- the biggest inspiration for hal's hero worship of martin (+ the whole deal with his jacket) and his overall attitude comes from darwyn cooke's elseworlds dc: the new frontier 2004, its unparalleled commercial success was undoubtedly a leading factor in the changes that followed and cooke had once spoken about being asked to work on green lantern secret files and origins 2005 (the one-shot that would jumpstart the 2005 ongoing series after the rebirth miniseries) for precisely that reason.
Tumblr media
(graphic ink: the art of darwyn cooke)
secondly, for thirty (count 'em!) years of hal jordan's existence there had been no mention of his parents whatsoever. he had brothers, cousins, uncles come in and out of his life throughout green lantern 1960 but never parents. that all changed in 1989 with green lantern: emerald dawn #1, the first real attempt to give hal an origin (see below).
Tumblr media
lastly and most importantly, martin had undoubtedly been an abusive father to hal and remained one of his few deep deep actual fears.
i'll be your guide through these pre-2005 appearances and mentions of martin and his relationship with hal, presented in chronological order based on real life release dates rather than internal chronology.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
("you just can't make me proud of you, can you, son?" emerald dawn 1989 #2)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
("well, he's still like he always was. i guess i'll always be a failure in his eyes, that's all. nothing i can do is going to change that", green lantern 1990 #48, published 1994)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
("my fault! all my fault. father always said i'd be a failure!", superman: the man of steel (1991) annual #4, published 1995)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
("the problem with you, hal, is you always got your head in the clouds", unpublished 'emerald interlude' originally slated for legends of the dc universe 1998 #33)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
("screwed up again, didn't you, space-case?! just once i'd like you to get something right!", legends of the dc universe 1998 #35, published 2000)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
("you become what you know. and what you didn't know you knew. like what you learn at the end of someone's arm. you learn to go blank. like maybe things with him would change if you could just give him what he wants. if you could just take it like a man", dc comics presents: green lantern 2004 #1)
interestingly enough, each of these stories is the work of different writers and between legends of the dc universe and dc comics presents: green lantern the narrative woven throughout becomes explicit -- hal perceives martin's abuse as abuse of power first and foremost, and doesn't just fear becoming 'what he knows' but also fears that he already did by abusing the power of the green lantern as parallax. all in all, it's an incredibly complex narrative seldom afforded to superheroes nowadays and an entirely vital part of hal's characterisation that we've been robbed of for far too long now.

oomf on twitter said this but yeah, a lot of john stewart's 'fanbase' is so fake. or as he said, 'faker than a 3 dollar bill'. dcau stans whine about how john doesn't get the spotlight he deserves but the minute he actually got a solo aka war journal, it's crickets.
i still remember when dcau john/shayera stans on twitter who claimed to care for john said that green lantern (2021) comic run should be boycotted not because the writer was problematic but because he made a thanagarian oc with shayera's color scheme to 'bait' dcau stans 😭😭😭
and even if that story for john was bad..... they did not care about that because this was way before the story even released lmao. they're genuinely a pathetic performative lot who don't care about john as his own character and only see him as an accessory to shayera the WHITE woman. like when will we finally stop entertaining this fanbase and call them out for what they really are?
