This is a complex panel actually, but something I've noticed over the course of the series (up to chapter 24) is that anytime "Hikaru's" true form seeps out it's always from the left side. Now, here, Yoshiki asked "Hikaru" if he liked him. And while it's not expressly stated Yoshiki definitely means in the romantic sense.

This is a test, in my opinion, to see how much of Hikaru is still in "Hikaru". Now, it's the answer that matters, because at first "Hikaru" tries to play it off. He says, "What do you...." And then trails off before answering the question. As if to say, why bother hiding it.

Hikaru normally wouldn't have said anything because of what his Father told him when he was younger about the loved ones of their family getting spirited away if you loved them but didn't marry them. He can't marry Hikaru so that already limited his choice, but then you add in the shitty oppressive cult of a village and that makes it worse. Except, Hikaru is dead and "Hikaru", the one answering the question, knows he's strong enough to protect Yoshiki so there's no high stakes anymore.

Now, I firmly believe that both Hikaru's are responding to Yoshiki but both answers are the original Hikaru.

To start with, the contrast of the one side being shadowed and the other being bright and visible make me think distinctly that this is the two Hikaru's coexisting for a brief moment. No, Hikaru is not alive but his memories and emotions exist in this body. Now, the dark side is "Hikaru" and I believe this because, as I said earlier, any time "Hikaru's" true form slips out it's always from the left side.

Now, I think, despite "Hikaru's" clear difficulty with understanding humans, he understood who this question was really for. And so, "Hikaru" with the most basic understanding of human love, responds. At first glance, you would want to pair each bubble with the side it's on but I'm going based off bubble color instead. The white bubble, even though it's on the "Hikaru" side, is Hikaru giving the most base form of his feelings through "Hikaru". The black bubble is "Hikaru" tapping into Hikaru's feelings and expressing them without feeling the need to bury what he's experiencing because in "Hikaru's" mind, that's how I/he feels and there's no reason not to.

Anyway, TLDR;

I love this manga panel and I just want my boys to be happy. Also this might not be coherent because it's 3 am and thoughts are hard
