The former 1891 town hall in Denver, CO was converted to a residence and houses the owner's museum-quality car collection, which is amazing. However, the 4bd, 8ba, 13, 656 sq ft home is so ultra modern in design, there aren't many, if any, historic features. $10.9m.
Tumblr media
Large entrance hall. I recognize this home- I posted it quite awhile ago. It probably hasn't sold b/c it's been over-renovated.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They really modernized the historic building. It's disappointing when you don't see anything original.
Tumblr media
Very open concept main living area. I wonder what it looked like, originally.
Tumblr media
Formal dining room.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not feeling the kitchen.
Tumblr media
They've got a den here.
Tumblr media
The home is so big, that they have more than one bar.
Tumblr media
Patio outside the bar.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Huge primary bedroom has a clear fireplace and a large sitting room.
Tumblr media
Look at the size of the en-suite.
Tumblr media
Closet/dressing room. Geez, those closets are so high up.
Tumblr media
The home gym is a part of the bedroom suite.
Tumblr media
Check out the rooftop deck with outdoor kitchen.
Tumblr media
I think that the industrial style rec room is the coolest space in the house. It has the owner's antique car next to the bar.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here's another display area and the most impressive part of the house.
Tumblr media
I guess that the home theater has a counter for eating and drinking during the movie.
Tumblr media
Colorful wine cellar.
Tumblr media
Hallway to the bedrooms.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Guest suite.
Tumblr media
In the back you can see the modern additions and the huge parking area.
Tumblr media
Aerial view shows the patios and rooftop deck on the 0.29 acre lot.

Riace Bronzes
The Riace Bronzes, also known as the Riace Warriors, are a pair of bronze statues most likely sculpted in Greece in the mid-5th century BCE and rescued from the Ionian Sea near Riace Marina, Italy in 1972 CE. Slightly larger than life-size, the nude male figures represent two warriors, one older than the other, and they are considered masterpieces of Classical Greek sculpture. Restored and protected from future corrosion, they stand magnificent in their own environmentally-controlled room within the National Archaeological Museum of Reggio Calabria in southern Italy.
Discovery & Restoration
The two bronzes were miraculously discovered in the Ionian Sea off the coast of Riace Marina in southern Italy on 16 August 1972 CE. The discoverer was Stefano Mariottini, who spotted them while diving a mere 200 metres (656 ft) from the shore. Lying at a depth of just 8 metres (26 ft), Mariottini noticed an arm sticking up from the sandy seabed and, digging down to investigate, he saw that not only did it belong to a large statue but there was a second figure buried close by. Within five days, the authorities were notified and a police diving team supervised by archaeologists raised the two figures using air-inflated balloons. Further investigation of the site in 1972 and 1981 CE revealed 28 lead rings - possibly used as part of a ship's sail - and a fragment of a ship's keel containing two bronze linchpins. These artefacts likely belong to the Roman period or later. Also discovered was a fragment of the handles of one of the figure's shield. It may be that the statues sunk while the wreckage from the light ship in which they would have been transported was dispersed by the sea. Alternatively, the statues may have been jettisoned overboard to make the vessel more seaworthy during a storm.
Before going on public display, the figures underwent a laborious process of restoration in Florence, which took five years. Sand and debris were removed from their interiors and their surfaces relieved of encrustations built up over the centuries on the seafloor. The figures were restored again from 1992-5 CE and 2009-11 CE. The statues, now standing on anti-seismic marble plinths in a climatically-controlled room of their own, are on permanent display at the National Archaeological Museum of Reggio Calabria, Italy, where they have become the poster boys of southern Italy, silent ambassadors for the region's cultural heritage and identity.

Female Europid Mummy from the Necropolis of Subexi III, Grave M6, Turfan District, Xinjiang. 5th-3rd C. BCE. Source: Baumer, Christoph. The history of Central Asia. Vol.1. The age of the steppe warriors. London : I.B. Tauris, 2012. pg. 218 left DS329.4 .B38 2012. Image via University of Pennsylvania. See maps in the post before this one for a better understanding of the geography discussed.
"Section 26 – The Kingdom of Nearer [i.e. Southern] Jushi 車師前 (Turfan)
1. ‘Nearer Jushi’ 車師前 refers to the kingdom or state centered in the Turfan oasis or, sometimes, to the tribe which controlled it. There can be no question that Nearer Jushi refers here to the Turfan Oasis. See for example: CICA, p. 183, n. 618; also note 1.5 above. For the etymology of the name Turfan see Bailey (1985), pp. 99-100, which is summed up in his sentence: “The name turpana- is then from *druva-pāna- ‘having safe protection’, a name suitable for a walled place.”
“One other oasis town is currently under excavation. At Yarghul (Jiaohe), 10 km (16 miles) [sic – this should read 10 miles (16 km)] west of Turpan, archaeologists have been excavating remains of the old Jushi capital, a long (1,700 m (5,580 ft)) but narrow (200 m (656 ft)) town between two rivers. From the Han period they uncovered vast collective shaft tombs (one was nearly 10 m (33 ft) deep). The bodies had apparently already been removed from these tombs but accompanying them were other pits containing form one to four horse sacrifices, with tens of horses for each of the larger burials.” Mallory and Mair (2000), pp. 165 and 167.
“Some 300 km (186 miles) to the west of Qumul [Hami] lie [mummy] sites in the vicinity of the Turpan oasis that have been assigned to the Ayding Lake (Aidinghu) culture. The lake itself occupies the lowest point in the Turpan region (at 156 m (512 ft) below sea level it is the lowest spot on earth after the Dead Sea). According to accounts of the historical period, this was later the territory of the Gushi, a people who ‘lived in tents, followed the grasses and waters, and had considerable knowledge of agriculture. They owned cattle, horses, camels, sheep and goats. They were proficient with bows and arrows.’ They were also noted for harassing travellers moving northwards along the Silk Road from Krorän, and the territories of the Gushi and the kingdom of Krorän were linked in the account of Zhang Qian, presumably because both were under the control of the Xiongnu. In the years around 60 BC, Gushi fell to the Chinese and was subsequently known as Jushi (a different transcription of the same name).” Mallory and Mair (2000), pp. 143-144.
“History records that in 108 BC Turpan was inhabited by farmers and traders of Indo-European stock who spoke a language belonging to the Tokharian group, an extinct Indo-Persian language [actually more closely related to Celtic languages]. Whoever occupied the oasis commanded the northern trade route and the rich caravans that passed through annually. During the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220) control over the route see-sawed between Xiongnu and Han. Until the fifth century, the capital of this kingdom was Jiaohe.” Bonavia (1988), p. 131.
“Turpan is principally an agricultural oasis, famed for its grape products – seedless white raisins (which are exported internationally) and wines (mostly sweet). It is some 80 metres (260 feet) below sea level, and nearby Aiding Lake, at 154 metres (505 feet) below sea level, is the lowest continental point in the world.” Ibid. p. 137.
“The toponym Turfan is also a variation of Tuharan. Along the routes of Eurasia there are many other place names recorded in various Chinese forms that are actually variations of Tuharan.” Liu (2001), p. 268."

lovelySeul mega girls day vlog <33 ft. the tot & related girlies! | heeseul.tot
oct 23 ' 7.8m views ' 26,839 comments
ᯓ✦
heeseul propped up her camera, starting the recording and introducing herself. "so today i'm going to spend time with the girls because," she explained while applying some light makeup.
"and to beg for forgiveness, we're all going out." she said and took a brush, lightly dusting her cheeks with a pretty coral hue. she turned her face both sides, admiring her makeup with a smile, "and, we're done!"
She leant forward to detach the camera and on cue, the bell rung, indicating the girls were here. they'd decided to all come at heeseul's appartment and leave from there. placing the camera down on the desk, she walked to the door.
swinging the door open, stood around seven girls. "alright, come on in." heeseul moved aside giving space to the girls who entered one by one. the calm environment turned into loud conversations and bickering while heeseul pointed to each of the girls, introducing them to the audience who would view the video once it's posted.
"lastly, we have the newest member, she's doie oppa's sister." heeseul spoke, gesturing minjeong to introduce herself. posture stiff, awkward silence as she spoke, "hi everyone, i'm kim minjeong, nice to see you all."
yunjin giggled from beside her, assuring her that it's okay to be camera shy. packing up everything, they quickly stuffed themselves in the big van that belonged to trick or trick and was being driven by heeseul's manager, yumin.
the band's music played in the car as everyone talked (yapped) while some sung and some dozed off. minjeong, though introverted, didn't have much problem as she knew half of them, yunjin, natsuko, yuqi, yuncha; and aeri, heejin were easy to get along with.
their conversations flowed with ease, as if they'd all been friends for years — which they had been, except for minjeong —
heeseul sat in the corner, staring at the city and its contents. "aren't you gonna record?" heejin asked, eyeing her oddly quiet sister. "nah, too tiring honestly, i'd rather just enjoy the ride." heeseul's voice rung and heejin just nodded.
the day had been nothing short of eventful. playful roasts, giggles, teases, laughs, it was all there. you'd done it all. from karaoke, to a haunted house, to drinking, to eating ice cream and walking in the park at night, taking pictures.
it felt nice to live again. sure, you loved your job so much and wouldn't trade it for the world, but sometimes not being labeled as "trick or trick's heeseul" was a nice change of pace.
minjeong saw how you were again super smiley, like you were at the concert, but you didn't make many efforts to talk to her. she understood, she tried to.
after having walked around the park and now all sat on the ground staring at the pretty stars, she was coincidently beside you. she leaned a little closer to you, "uhmm, i hope i'm not much of a burden."
heeseul turned to her, woah, they were surprisingly close. shrugging the though, she spoke, "obviously not, it's great to have you here. it's just.. i'm kinda awkward and don't know what to talk about and what to, you know? say to new people. but, i promise it's not because of you. i've always been like this."
"oh, thank god. i was starting to think i made you uncomfortable." minjeong let out a giggle, making her smile as well. "i think we'll eventually, be good friends."
minjeong again looked at heeseul, a little taken aback. "you think so?" she said, the phrase coming out as a whisper. "yeah." heeseul finally cracked a sweet smile for the first time. minjeong's heart was practically doing backflips and she somehow mustered up a shy smile. "i'd love that."
it'd be a lie if minjeong were to say she didn't spy on heeseul's instagram, twitter, tiktok and youtube. she, honestly, found her vlogs super entertaining. maybe lee heeseul wasn't so cold, after all.

I watch Cooking Fast and Fresh with West: Episode 1 and I know where in Vancouver Misha was living before he moved out to Bellingham - a step by step guide:
date of publishing on youtube: 13 January 2013 date of recording: autumn 2012
Tumblr media
To make it easy, at the beginning Misha says that he is in Canada (I assume it's Vancouver) and it's fall.
Tumblr media
Vicky behind the camera and they start the walk to the grocery store by the building with a fountain and a street with a green bike lane. Maybe they live in that building, maybe across the street, maybe they only started recording here? To make search for this place easier I keep watching.
Tumblr media
Another valuable info - the grocery store is close.
There is a Starbucks on route to the store:
Tumblr media
Inside the building, to enter the store, they need to go up the ramp - another valuable info.
Tumblr media
Once inside we get a name of the grocery store - it's SAFEWAY
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A quick googling tells me that in Vancouver there is several of these, but luckily the first one (on Robson St) I checked was the right one:
Tumblr media
I look to the right and there is even the same Starbucks - later I will go in that direction.
Tumblr media
Back to the video - Misha and West end the stroll by the same building where they started:
Tumblr media
So I look for a street with a green bike lane in close proximity of the grocery store - there is Alberni Street 200 meters (656 ft) north of the shop:
Tumblr media
This is the building where they started:
Tumblr media
But is this the building where they were living? And if yes, then which window was theirs? I keep watching the video.
Once in the kitchen we can see that: his apartment is not on the ground level but also not very high, his balcony is facing the street with the green bike lane, there is a characteristic tree across the street, the design of the balcony matches the design of the building with the fountain.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Through the window above the sink we can see the wall of the nearby building and a small tree:
Tumblr media
so the first balcony above the ground was Misha's:

Sleep- Anakin & Rex ft. Anidala
Return to File- Event Masterlist
Recovery date: July 8th, 2022
Description: Anakin doesn't know how to take a break, it worries Rex.

Anakin slumped into his desk and rubbed at his tingling eyes. It was barely two in the afternoon and his eyes were already stinging from exhaustion. The prickly and heavy feeling made it hard to focus on the holoscreen and his eyelids were starting to feel dry.
A loud yawn escaped him as he pressed the heels of his hands into his eyes.
“General Skywalker?”
Anakin jumped back in his chair, hitting himself in the face and nearly falling to the floor.
Rex watched in concern as the general steadied himself and tried to stifle another yawn.
“Re-Rex,” he covered his mouth and cleared his throat, trying to hide another yawn. “I didn’t hear you come in, what can I do for you?”
“I have the reports from the last mission, are you alright sir?”
“Ya, I’m fine. Just a little tired, you can leave the reports here, thank you.”
“General, when was the last time you slept?”
He stopped reading through his report on the holoscreen, it was almost completely incomprehensible and most of it was in huttese. The last time he’d slept had been before Padme had left on a trip to negotiate a trade route in the outer rim, whenever that was. Not that he could say that.
“I don’t know, when did Padme leave for her negotiations?”
Rex frowned and grew more concerned when Anakin didn’t flinch or try to correct himself after using Senator Amidala’s given name. Normally the general would splutter and correct himself halfway through, but it was like he hadn’t even noticed the slip up.
“Sir, that was two weeks ago.”
“Really? That can’t be right.”
“Sir, with all do respect I think you need a break.”
“N-no, I’m fine. I’ll be done after this report, thank you for your concern.”
Nodding, Rex stared at him skeptically. First he hadn’t heard him knock, then Rex had been able to enter the room without Anakin noticing, and finally he’d referred to senator Amidala by her first name and made no attempt to correct himself. Perhaps he should inform general Kenobi.
“I think General Skywalker hasn’t been sleeping.”
Obi-Wan took a sip of tea, completely unphased by Rex’s observation.
After visiting his general, Rex had gone to find Obi-Wan. He’d found the other general having tea with Master Plo Koon, Cody, and Wolffe as they discussed another mission.
“Young Skywalker’s sleep habits have never been the best,” Plo Koon said, “is there something specific you’re worried about?”
“I was able to enter his office without him noticing. If he were to go on a mission in this state he would be putting not only himself in danger but also everyone else.”
The line about the mission sounded rehearsed, and Rex cringed internally. He hadn’t even come up with that reason until he was outside Obi-Wan’s office.
“Now that is a problem, but I’m not worried. It’ll sort itself out soon enough.”
“Sir?”
“Senator Amidala is set to return today.”
“I don’t understand.”
---
“Ani,” Padme sighed, standing in the doorway of his office with her hands on her hips.
“Ah- Padme,” Anakin smiled, pushing himself away from his desk.
A soft smile pulled at Padme’s lips as Anakin placed his hands on her hips and leaned in to kiss her. She stopped him, cupping his cheeks and brushing her thumbs under his eyes.
“You haven’t been sleeping.”
“I-I’ve been busy.”
“Well you’re not going to be when you pass out and get yourself hurt,” she frowned. “Come on, you’re done for the day.”
“But I still have a report-”
“That’s probably incomprehensible and not in common,” she dropped her voice to a whisper, “come home and take a nap.”
“Hm,'' Anakin pouted, “you drive a hard bargain.”
“Comes with the job, now come on. Captain Rex is worried about you.”
“How-”
“Master Kenobi left me a message, apparently Rex was able to sneak up on you.”
“He didn’t-”
“Alright, less talking.”

What are the Best Muscle Cars to Buy in the Market this 2024 and 2025?
Tumblr media
Muscle cars have always had a special place in the hearts of car enthusiasts. These high-powered, rear-wheel-drive vehicles represent pure American automotive passion. If you're looking to buy a muscle car, the market is heating up for 2024 and 2025. Here’s a guide to some of the best muscle cars to buy in the coming years.
2024 Ford Mustang GT: A Modern Classic
The Ford Mustang has been a staple of American muscle cars for decades. The 2024 Ford Mustang GT stays true to its roots with a powerful V8 engine that delivers 450 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque. If you're after a muscle car that offers both performance and iconic style, the Mustang GT is hard to beat.
It features a starting price of around $44,000, making it a more affordable option in the muscle car market. Additionally, companies that ship cars can transport this beauty across states if you're buying from a different location, ensuring you get your dream car without any hassle.
2024 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat: A Beast on the Road
For those who want raw power and don’t mind a larger car, the 2024 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat is a top pick. With its supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI V8 engine, the Hellcat cranks out an insane 717 horsepower and 656 lb-ft of torque. It goes from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds. If speed and power are your top priorities, this might be the best muscle car to buy for you.

I think right now my favorite fish are either the thresher shark or the giant oarfish
like I just think thresher sharks are beautiful sharks like look at them
Tumblr media Tumblr media
no thoughts behind those eyes (if you’ve ever seen jaws, quint talks about how he got a scar from a thresher shark in the scene where him and hooper compare scars)
and not only is it’s tail very beautiful but it’s extremely useful! Their tail helps them to swim very fast allowing them to swim 30mph (holy shit)
the way they hunt is really cool too. They’ll use their long tail to heard fish into a tight circle (almost like how whales do) and then swim above the group of fish and strike them with its tail. This stuns the fish and allows them to eat a large amount of prey all at once.
here’s a pretty cool study that talks about how exactly this works (I wanted to include it but this post is so long already😭😭😭)
and giant oarfish are just cool by principle. Like what do you mean that there’s this giant fish just swimming around in the ocean but we never see it because they live in such deep waters?? What do you mean this fish can grow to be 36 ft (1,100 cm)?!?!??!? For context bigger great white sharks are only around 20 ft (609 cm) long. This makes giant oarfish the longest bony fish ever discovered
Tumblr media
long boy
oh and if all of that isn’t crazy enough for you there are some people like to call this fish the “doomsday fish” because they have often predicted when things like earthquakes will happen. See the reason we never see oarfish is because they usually live around 656 ft (200 m) underwater. The only reason they ever come up to the surface is either because they are dead, in the process of dying or very disoriented. Like for example if an earthquake was going to happen and that disoriented the fish. In 2011 there was an earthquake in Japan and apparently right before the earthquake 20 oarfish were found washed up on beaches.(source) But I’ve also read some articles that say that all of that is just legend and there’s no correlation between the two so take all of that with a grain of salt lol
also I know this post is already stupid long but shout out to Beebe’s untouchable fish that may or may not be real (? Idk) they’re pretty cool too.
Hey all!
Please tell me about your favourite fish or a fish who ought to be appreciated!
I would like to learn. This is for everyone! :)

Week 5: Dobrou chuť! (Bon appétit!)
Čau!
It's Reese again. Welcome back to my life in Praha, this week has been my busiest yet! As I mentioned in last week’s blog, I flew back from Amsterdam Sunday night with my friend Samantha who’s studying in London. Her program is on Spring Break, so she was able to stay with me for 3 nights. Later this week, my dad also arrived in Prague to visit me :) Stay tuned for all of our adventures.
Petřín Hill
With Samantha in town, we set out to find the best view of Prague. Standing 138 meters (452 ft) above sea level, Petřín Hill seemed like a good contender. There’s a funicular that takes you to the top of the hill which was included in our transportation passes, which was clutch. At the top of the hill, we found the Petřín Lookout Tower, which resembles a petite Eiffel Tower! Its observation deck is the highest in Prague at 200 meters (656 ft) above the Vltava River that runs through the city. It was foggy outside, but the panoramic views were incredible. Try to find Prague Castle in the picture below!

Architecture Tour (Prague Castle)
For this week’s architecture tour we went to Prague Castle! I lucked out because I had been meaning to show Samantha around the complex, but the timing was difficult due to my classes. Fortunately, my instructor let me bring her along!
The first notable site we visited contained the remnants of the Church of the Virgin Mary, which was the first stone building in the complex and served as the second oldest church in Bohemia. The construction of this church initiated the gradual development of Prague Castle as a residence of monarchs and authoritative figures. We were fortunate to witness the Prime Minister of Poland being escorted out of the complex as we were crossing the courtyard, which demonstrates the political significance of the site that remains to this day. Below is a picture of the escort.
Tumblr media
Next we observed the Old Royal Palace, which was originally designed in Romanesque style and served as the residence for Bohemian kings from the 10th to the 16th century. It was later transformed by Emperor Charles IV into a Gothic palace with a vaulted interior that served state purposes. Charles IV was a well-educated diplomat from Luxembourg with a vision to establish Prague as the center of politics in Central Europe. Although he never fully achieved his vision, the architecture built during his reign stands as a testament to Prague's political and cultural importance in Europe.
In his time, Charles IV also tore down the Romanesque Basilica of St Vitus, which stood in the place of the St. Vitus Rotunda that was founded in the 10th century by St. Wenceslas. There, Charles constructed a monumental Gothic cathedral, the largest in Europe at the time. Apart from being a space for religious services, St Vitus Cathedral became a coronation place for kings, as well as the final resting place of prominent Bohemian figures like Charles IV himself. Matthias of Arras was the architect who designed the cathedral in a French-like style. It features high Gothic architecture with pointed arches and tall spires symbolizing a vertical connection between society and the divine. Due to financial constraints and resource shortages, however, the tower could not be finished in Gothic style... check out the green finish in the image below!
Tumblr media
In the 16th century, Prague Castle became the center of power for the Habsburg dynasty. This led to remodeling in the Renaissance style, including the construction of the last palace, Schwarzenberg Palace, within the castle complex. The Renaissance period saw the rebirth of classical ideas and principles. The Schwarzenberg Palace illustrates classical architectural elements and characteristics. The facade is symmetrical, with evenly spaced windows and doors and elaborate ornamentation. This detailed, yet balanced, composition showcases the Renaissance ideals of beauty and order in art.
Prague Castle has served as the seat of power in the Czech region for centuries as the residence of Bohemian kings, Holy Roman Emperors, and nowadays, the president of the Czech Republic. The architectural evolution of the complex reflects shifts in political power and ideology, from the monarchy of the Middle Ages to the absolutist rule of the Habsburgs, and, finally, the establishment of democratic governance in the 20th century. To the Czech people, Prague Castle is a symbol of national identity and pride. The iconic silhouette that overlooks the city is an everyday reminder of their quest for self-determination throughout history.
Symphony
Yet another beautiful symphony to share with you all this week. Brandon, our classical music expert, picked this show out specifically. The first movement, Symphony D Minor La Tampesta,  was written by Austrian composer Pavel Vranický, an influential figure in Vienna’s musical life at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries who worked closely with Beethoven. La Tampesta is named for the evocative depiction of a storm in the third movement. I vividly remember the use of the gong in this movement, adding to the strikingly powerful composition.
The second movement, Eroica, is from Beethoven's third symphony but famous for the circumstances for its original dedication to Napoleon. Beethoven crossed out the dedication after Napoleon declared himself Emperor and replaced it with a dedication to his patron, Prince Joseph Franz Maximilian von Lobkowicz. Eroica was considered to be the first symphony of Romanticism, and ahead of its time in its symphonic form, length, harmony, emotional and cultural content.

Dad Visiting
This week after Samantha left, my dad came to visit for two weekends! We're super close, and I can't wait to introduce him to my friends – he's already heard so much about them. I’ve been looking forward to him coming for a while, ever since we planned our trips in January to Berlin and Switzerland! It’ll be a nice break to travel with him because we’re super compatible. Both of us like to take our time, wander in search of hidden gems, and learn about the local culture and history. Hear more about our Berlin trip in a later section of this week's blog.
Czech Cooking Class
Every Friday IFSA sponsors an event for the students who stayed in town for the day or weekend. This week’s event was a Czech specialty cooking class! Because my dad was still jet lagged from his arrival Thursday night, we weren’t leaving for Berlin until Saturday morning. No complaints for the late departure though, I was super excited to have the opportunity to learn how to properly cook Czech cuisine. We made dumplings, potato soup, buttery sauced chicken, and an apple streusel. There was a solid group of 10 students, along with our two cool program directors, Ady and Dominika, who made it even more fun!
Tumblr media
Berlin!
This weekend my dad and I went to Berlin! We took the train on Saturday morning for just over 4 hours to get there, and immediately checked into the hotel so we could explore. Our first stop was the Berlin Wall memorial, which commemorates the division of Berlin by the Berlin Wall. It was sad but interesting to learn about the circumstances of living on each side of the wall, and the deaths that occurred at the border. I learned that my dad studied abroad in the winter of 1989, and was supposed to be in Berlin when the wall fell in November 1989, but chose to visit Paris instead due to the chaos surmounting in the city! We then headed to the East Side Gallery afterwards, an open-air gallery consisting of a series of murals painted directly on the longest surviving section of the Berlin Wall on Mühlenstraße in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg. The gallery consists of 105 paintings by artists from all over the world, originally painted in 1990 on the side of the Wall that was formerly facing East Berlin. The paintings comment on the political changes of 1989/90, reflecting a period of change and optimism for a freer future worldwide.
Tumblr media
The actual border at the time had been the river Spree, which we walked along to get to our next stop: Markthalle Neun. It became a full-on Naschmarkt, or snack market! There were tens of stalls showcasing their sweet and savory goods, like bread, cheese, buns, chocolates, pizza, wine, beer, and more! It was packed with people flowing out into the streets, making for an extremely local, lively atmosphere that couldn’t be missed. My dad, who typically hates such crowded spaces, absolutely loved it and wished we could spend more time there. Check out some of the food we got below, including pizza, ice cream, and a cannoli!
Tumblr media
Next, we headed north to the Brandenburg Gate, arriving just in time for sunset. It was originally built in 1791 as an entrance to Unter den Linden, which led to the Prussian palace, but later became a symbol of German division, as the Berlin Wall shut off access to the gate for both East and West Germans. It served as the backdrop for President Ronald Reagan’s famous 1987 speech in which he pleaded, “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall.” The gate is now a national symbol of peace and unity. Nearby we visited the Holocaust memorial, also known as the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe. Architect Peter Eisenman placed 2711 concrete stelae of different heights to create an immersive spatial structure. The abstract design leaves it up to visitors to interpret the meaning behind the memorial as they walk through. I noticed that people suddenly seem to disappear behind the concrete blocks, despite being in front of you the very moment before. It felt like an act of surveillance, paired with voidness and abandonment. The towering sensation of the concrete blocks only added to the overwhelming feeling of uncertainty and discomfort. The grid shape of the memorial, however, served to emit light at the end of each aisle.
Tumblr media
The time we spent here was emotionally taxing, so we decided to take a walk before heading back to the hotel to freshen up and get ready for dinner. We were sure to walk past the Reichstag, the German parliament building, but we were not permitted entry since we hadn’t gotten tickets in advance.
Saturday night, my dad and I decided to hang out at the hotel bar for a couple of hours. We chatted with these two women, one from Canada and the other China, who had moved to Berlin a few years ago. They explained that Berlin is a hub for art and expression, and that only one third of the Berlin population is actually from Berlin. Another third is made up of German natives, and the final third comes from the rest of the world, which I thought was pretty cool.
Sunday morning we checked out the Schloss Charlottenburg (Charlottenburg Palace) from its gardens. They were simply beautiful and had an incredible view of the palace over the river. As an added bonus, the sun beamed through the clouds in a way that perfectly complemented the cool morning air. I found a Biergarten for lunch afterwards, a local spot with amazing and authentic dishes. Our meal was prolonged due to our order being misplaced in the kitchen, but they gave us a free apple crumble for the trouble. Definitely worth it!
Tumblr media
We only had time for one museum Sunday afternoon, so I picked Topographie des Terrors, a site of remembrance on the site of the SS central command where the Gestapo, SS, and Reich Security Main Office operated during the Nazi regime. The permanent exhibition, "Topography of Terror," details the crimes committed there. Outside, we found another permanent exhibition, "Berlin 1933-1945," which focused on Nazi policies in the city. Many of these I had learned about in the Holocaust class I took back in Ann Arbor. The details hit much harder, however, when reviewing this information in the station at which the crimes were planned and atrocities were determined to be executed. My dad and I both wished we had a longer time in Berlin, both to learn and explore… but it gives us all the more reason to go back!
Tumblr media
Now, some ins and outs for the week.
Ins:
Bringing visitors to class: Samantha not only joined my architecture tour, but was able to sit in on my Essential Czech class as well! The professors were super cool about this, especially if the visitor is willing to learn and engage with the rest of the class.
Essential Czech: This class is my favorite by far. It’s only once a week for an hour, but our professor has so much energy and charisma. We always start off by sharing new Czech words we’ve heard or seen throughout the week, and then move into the lesson plan for the day. It’s extremely low pressure and always has good vibes. This week, the other two sections of the class congregated in our classroom to learn a song to sing!
Tumblr media
Gelato: We’ve had an obsession with gelato lately… to the point where we have made friends with the workers and have no shame. The gelato is super fresh, sooooo incredibly tasty, and the small cone is 59 crowns (just over $2). Bonus points for allowing customers to choose more than one flavor no matter the size, and for having WiFi!
Outs:
Random illnesses: Samantha got super sick when she was visiting and out of nowhere started throwing up. I think it may have been a combination of dehydration and pushing her body too far this week. I started not feeling well a couple days after she left too. It was definitely a signal to take a couple steps back and let the body get the rest it needs.
Spring Break: Although we were promised to have some sort of spring break in our program, it amounted to only 1 day off of school for Easter Monday. Nearly all other abroad programs and UM had this week off to travel or take a rest, so we were jealous. Because of our attendance policy, I wasn’t able to meet up with all my friends in Barcelona and Madrid this week, which I was super sad about.
Stolen Phones: Lydia got her phone stolen in Barcelona this week, and she was definitely not the first person that this happened to while abroad! Served as a harsh reminder to be careful and keep all your belongings well hidden and on you at all times. It's a total pain to get a new phone and sim abroad, especially since most of us have already had to change or add a new phone number. Fortunately, her brother visits next week and will bring her a new device... but for now, she's got a burner (with an atrocious camera)!
That’s all for this week! As always, thank you for reading this far. To all Michigan students - I hope you had a fun, relaxing, and rejuvenating break!
Na shledanou,
