I really wanted to make a post for Nina and Inej, so here I go.

Inej and Nina are genuinely one of my favorite dynamics in all of literature. Especially concerning a friendship with two girls, I think it's safe to say that these two take the crown for being by far the best. Trust me when I say that I've seen far too much media in which I've been thoroughly disappointed with the f/f friendship. (The most recent examples for me are the Grisha trilogy and The Cruel Prince)

Inej and Nina are two girls who likely got along from the get go. One never had an open or secretive grudge against the other. Their scenes in SOC on the Ferolind are so so so heartwarming and sweet. You won't believe the smile that came to my face when Nina burst out crying for Inej's wellbeing, when Inej told her to sing to provide a distraction from her thoughts, when despite Nina's awful voice, Inej did not judge but instead sang with her, when they were so honest and open with each other.

And the best part was that they remained that way throughout the whole series. They were the epitome of true best friends as they always had each other's back, they encourage each other's personal goals, they respect one another and even support each other's relationship with their respective love interests simply for each other's happiness. It's sickeningly adorable and it means the entire world to me.

I will never romantically ship these two. One because I am very loyal to Kanej and Helnik :3. Two because I'm not really a multi shipper. And three, the most important of all, is because their friendship is so beautiful, I don't want anything to ruin it. Not even romance. I mean, especially not romance. I don't like romanticizing every single dynamic I see or read. Like I said, what they have as best friends is one of the most gorgeous and realistic things I have ever read. I even see myself with my own friends in them so I don't want anything to take that away.

The ripples grew wider, men and women tripping over themselves to move away from the center of the street. OR: All of Ketterdam is left reeling in the wake of Kaz Brekker’s death. Despite his frequent objections to the concept, there are mourners and a funeral. My summary/notes: When reading kanej death fics I have noticed that there is less Kaz death fics compared to Inej death fics. So if you're in the mood for a Kaz death fic (I have been many times, don't ask me why but I find it so interesting reading Inej's reaction to Kaz dying). You will feel Inej's pain and it hurts so much. And this fic has Nina helping Nina through the pain and them bonding over dead partners..

I think there's something so poetic abt the SoC pairings fitting the Soldier, Poet, King archetypes perfectly. Allow me:

Today I will be relating this song to six of crows.

"Most for freedom" - this part being about Inej because she wants to have freedom more than anything. Matthias because during soc he just basically wants to get the fuck out of there and be a Druskelle again (obviously his motives change throughout the books) Wylan who wants to run away from his father. Nina to 1. Break Matthias out of hellgate. 2. To go back to Ravka. Jesper to be free of debt and guilt.

"And of pleasure." Kaz is a money whore.

"Nothing ever lasts forever," - chapter 40. They were all supposed to make it. But as much as they all wanted to believe they are not invincible.

" Everybody wants to rule the world." - In Ketterdam a lot of the time people's main motivation is power. Jan Van Eck wants to maintain his wealthy lifestyle while using a drug that basically kills Grisha and is almost like torture but he doesn't give a fuck about the people he hurts because he wants to be richer and why would he care about people's lives when the cause of their death, jurda parem, is mostly benefiting him. Pekka Rollins wanting to be the boss of the barrel even if that means preying on innocent children and their naivety.

"There's a room where the light won't find you,

Holding hands while the walls come tumbling down,"- This part being about how loyal the crows are to each other and how they each find love within this group both types too. They find platonic love with the fact they all have a strong bond. They also find romantic love within their pairings. (Kanej, Helnik and Wesper.) This part could also be about the ending in which Kaz and Inej hold hands without armour and the "walls tumbling down" are the walls Kaz has put up to protect not only himself but Inej too. But he ends up breaking down those walls just for her as she holds his hand through it. (Literally and metaphorically.)

"When they do I'll be right behind you," -Again the loyalty within the group.

"So glad we've almost made it," - They didn't all make it however the ones who did are glad they did so they can experience life past this point.

"So sad they had to fade it,"- This might be just me but I feel like the crows won't be known as legends like Alina Starkov. Of course Inej will be known for her work of hunting slavers and being the total badass she is. And Wylan known for being a member of the merchant council. Jesper is reading assistant and partner and helping run the Van Eck business. Nina as a Grisha soldier (I haven't finished reading RoW yet so I don't fully know Nina's ending yet). Kaz of course is famous as dirtyhands and bastard of the barrel running a criminal empire. And Matthias will sadly be known as a traitor to the Druskelle. But they won't be known as "The Crows" the ones who broke into the ice court at least not by the public. And the fact that they were criminals and also a lot of them were considered "barrel rats" probably doesn't help because history is always written by powerful people and they would be able to twist the story however they like. Idk this might just be by personal opinion on the legacy of the crows.

this is another wip that mostly lives in my head, but ever since i read SoC i've had kaz in the back of my head. he's just so severely fucked up LOL and i kind of love that the series leaves him (and inej) on the cusp of potential -- theyre so so young and their lives could go in so many directions.

kaz in particular makes me crazy because he has so much potential to lose every bit of character growth he experienced in the series. like, the moment he thinks the people he love have stopped believing in him, he could easily go full apathetic bastard. and so i would love to write something post-canon that explores that, specifically working with the assumption that inej is in and out of ketterdam.

here's some of my notes:

something about how inej always sees kaz as a better man that he is, and how kaz hates to see the moment that she remembers who he truly is. (in reality, it’s not like she ever forgets. it just frustrates her that she has to fight down his walls every time she comes home. and he’s like: no one is making you do this. and she’s like: no one makes me do anything anymore.)

undercurrent: kaz resents inej for leaving him over and over and over. he does not like that he has this resentment bc he literally told her to follow her dreams so he represses it. obviously, this causes problems.

it's storm season. trade ships dont sail as often, so inej dismisses her crew for two months leave and chooses to stay in ketterdam for that time. kaz is surprised because he thought she might go to ravka, and he’s overwhelmed about it. and he can’t offer her what she wants (according to him)

and there’s PLOT— i want to write a heist !!! she’s going to use this time to team up with the dregs to topple some of the ketterdam end of the slave trade.

^^this is all very ambitious and id have to reread the books to acquire the necessary brainrot but id love to do it one day

Reasons why I think Cowboy Like Me is the Kanej anthem

The song is about two con artists falling in love, which is fitting despite Inej and Kaz not being con artists. They’re criminals, they have very similar themes in my opinion (not necessarily con artists and criminals but Kanej.). So the refrain starts of like this:

'I've got some tricks up my sleeve Takes one to know one You're a cowboy like me Never wanted love Just a fancy car Now I'm waiting by the phone Like I'm sitting in an airport bar You had some tricks up your sleeve Takes one to know one'

“I’ve got some tricks up my sleeve” immediately reminded me of Kaz’s talent for sleight of hand tricks, but also his thing of not fully revealing his plans. There’s this thing in the books that I noticed.. the other crows whenever I read their chapters always tended to ask these questions, ‘what is Kaz planning?’ Or ‘What did Kaz plan?’ ‘Where did Kaz go?’

“Takes one to know one” Inej doesn’t necessarily completely understands kaz in the beginning. But she slowly grows to do so. Though I don’t think I can say much about since I haven’t finished reading CK yet. And SoC ended of with Inej not being able to see through kaz or through his armour, so I don’t think I can say much. But I probably will edit this after I finish CK.

“You’re a Cowboy Like Me never wanted love just a fancy car” I think this explains how Inej and Kaz never really meant to fall for each other. It wasn’t something they had planned to do, but did anyway. Both had separate goals. Inej wanted to find her parents, get away from Ketterdam, away from the menagerie. Pay off her indenture, live her life at sea, have her own ship, and hunt slavers. And Kaz wanted to grow in the barrel, to avenge his brother, to make Pekka Rollins pay for what he did to him, he wanted vengeance, money, riches, wealth. They both wanted all of these different things, these things that would make it so that they are separate. But in the process, they crossed paths and ended up wanting each other. And all of these things also apply to this verse.

'You're a bandit like me Eyes full of stars Hustling for the good life Never thought I'd meet you here It could be love We could be the way forward And I know I'll pay for it'

“You’re a bandit like me, eyes full of stars. Hustling for the good life, never thought I’d meet you here.” This line also circles back to the last paragraph’s topic. How both of them had this hope of doing better for themselves, and find this ‘good life’. But unexpectedly found each other.

“It could be love, we could be the way forward, and I know I’ll pay for it” We know how Inej has troubles with touch. From her time in the menagerie, I don’t think I can fully grasp what happened to her. Yet. But I do know that it has had a grave affect on her and who she will come to be. Like for example, her relationship with Kaz. She is pretty hesitant to touch as though she is afraid to relive the past times men had tried to touch her. Yet she tries, slowly. One thing about Inej is that she knows what she can and can’t take. She knows her worth. (In progress of editing)

In SoC it was said that Inej had tried to escape the menagerie, but she failed as she was caught. Tante Helen beat her and locked her in her room for a long amount of time as a consequence.

This line also reminds me of this thing in the book where he says. ‘He needed to tell her . . . what? That she was lovely and brave and better than anything he deserved. That he was twisted, crooked, wrong, but not so broken that he couldn’t pull himself into some semblance of a man for her. That without meaning to, he begin to lean on her, to look for her, to need her near. He needed to thank her for his new hat.’ For starters... he’s trying. Trying to overcome himself, overcome this reputation, this image of a man the barrel created. Dirtyhands. And he’s trying to overcome his trauma. Even if he feels like he’s drowning whenever he comes into contact with skin, with people, with her. (Yes I read this spoiler in a comment section somewhere) Yet at the end of CK he held her hand, he brought down his armour for her. He paid for it. It was love. This is my first way of interpreting it, and the other is...

We all know of this scene in SoC.

In the end of SoC Inej gets kidnapped by Jan Van Eck. And in her absence we see Kaz being more... 'Dirtyhands has come to see the work done.' And that is something we get to see during the first chapter of CK, Wylan’s perspective. Where he gets these flashbacks of Kaz, who was tangling this man by the ankles at a lighthouse. Who had answered all of Kaz’s questions out of fear, fear of falling to his death. Yet despite his pleas, Kaz lets go making him fall to the ground. This shows a bit more unhinged Kaz, it seems like he would do anything to get her back. Though we do know murder isn’t something beyond him.

There's also this scene in the first book, where they were ambushed by Pekka's people. Inej was left alone by herself since she wasn't with the rest of the crows when the decoy ship exploded. And she ended up getting stabbed when she was fighting with one of the men. Oomen. She nearly died in that fight, and if it wasn't for kaz, she probably would have. This is the scene where he said that most annoying line, 'I protect my investments' . Eventually, Kaz had carried Inej back to the schooner. Where we get the well-known scene of Kaz... So basically what happens is that Kaz got angry. Very angry. And got even angrier when Oomen spit on his face, which Kaz wiped with a handkerchief. Remember the handkerchief will you? He told Jesper to hold Oomen, and he then took a knife somewhere in his clothes, and slashed Oomen's eye. He carved out an 'X'... And I then I kid you not. Reached in Oomen's eye socket with his gloved hand and pulled it out, throwing it overboard. And remember the handkerchief? He stuffed that in the eye socket. yeah. shoved it in the eye socket. THen he threw the man off the boat.

And all of that ties back to that line he said in Shadow and Bone's season 2: 'This city's price is blood. And I am happy to pay with yours'

I definitely go a little insane with the three reasons why he's paying for it...

i’m gonna go on a whole rant because i’ve been speaking to myself for the past 20 minutes so enjoy my internal monologue (about my journey into lco brainrot and how much i love you guys)

leigh bardugo finally started posting new stuff about campaigning for s3 of shadow and bone and getting that soc spin-off and everything and my whole rant led me to being even more emotional over lockwood and co

because up til march i was still deep into six of crows it was by far my favorite books and i thought about those characters every day that whole spiel, s2 came out i bawled my eyes out as one does because the cast is incredible and phenomenal and everything but in retrospect that season was a huge joke plot wise but that’s not my point

and to comfort myself after the kanej scenes and jesper’s arc and kaz’s arc and all that i started reading lockwood and co as a pallet cleanser of sorts but lmao i devoured them and jumped from one obsession to another

anyway this whole thought process came back in mind when i saw leigh’s stories on insta and looking back at this whole obsession journey 2023 edition i am overpowered by the fact that i don’t miss my soc obsession one bit because it was replaced with something so much better

because lco is home it’s comfortable it’s always about love and it just hugs my soul every time i think about it

and the huge bonus was meeting the whole fandom because you guys are just absolutely fantastic and i love you all, the s&b/soc fandom was sometimes difficult to be in and i wasn’t completely at ease but here i’m just in portland row with all of you and we’re sitting around the thinking cloth sharing stories drinking tea or just venting after a tough case and that’s so incredible to me that we get to have such a strong sense of community over three silly ghost hunters that we love so f-ing much

I liked season 2 of Shadow and Bone, it was entertaining and I made sure to remind myself to separate it from the books. That being said, I felt that some scenes lost their weight due to them being rushed (Kaz vs Pekka, Kaz fighting the Dregs), and I felt that the flashback scene of Kaz on the Reapers Barge was not impactful enough. They couldn’t have had the actor push a couple of dead limbs off himself or turn his head and come face to face with a corpse instead of just touching one body? That would be more impactful AND would save the horror and logistics of the “using Jordie as a life raft” scene.

I don’t generally like how the show has handled Inej’s story. Even in the first season they barely showed her fear of the Menagerie and Heleen, just her rage and anger. From the TV show/story telling perspective, I understand why they killed Heleen, it makes Kaz and Inej’s goals aligned. HOWEVER I wish Inej had gotten revenge on Heleen or we could have seen her get the tattoo cut off rather than tailored away and leaving a faint scar/feather outline to show just how much she wanted to be rid of it. I’ve seen tweets about the Inej episode they have written for the spin-off, written by an Indian woman, which does have me holding out hope they’ll give the story and Amita the space they deserve.

I also hated how they softened Zoya. I know that it’s possible to write a character who is mean and also likeable and they failed to do that. They also barely had her in the season.

My other complaint is that the season was very busy but when you have like 10+ main characters it can get to be a lot. Which sucks because I loved all the performances and the acting was great but I just could not CARE about Alina/Mal/the Darkling. Episode 7 which was mostly about them felt so long because I just didn’t care as much. The crows are more interesting, even my sister who’s never read the books agrees that the crows stories are more interesting. To quote her “enough with the war and Ben Barnes! Go back to the thieves!”

I very much want a Six of Crows spin-off, I don’t care much for a Season 3 (unless that’s all we’ll get) and I don’t mind they took some scenes from the books and made them fit with the context of the show. I think that it will make for a nice parallel between the Kanej graveyard/wound cleaning scene versus a possible similar Crooked Kingdom bathroom scene in a spin-off. I like the changes made because it made sure I wasn’t alway two steps ahead of what was happening and was able to be pleasantly surprised.

gosh, i am so on board with the things you're saying! your citicism is SO valid, and all these things bug me too!!! thank you so much for sharing btw—loved to read your thoughts. i am glad you were entertained by the season as a whole. i was, too; up-until ep4 when it just kind of fell apart for me (mostly as a season of television but also as an adaptation). but even after ep4, i tried to separate the books from the tv show in my mind, and that worked rather well until the last two episodes tbh. it's just.....the last-minute changes they made are so in conflict with what tgt is about and felt very out of left field, so that it was almost to jarring of a change. ((does that make sense??? i feel like if they'd committed to the changes earlier in the season i would have had an easier time not comparing it to tgt...)). and ngl the final made me more critical and re-evalute the earlier episodes in season (mainly because, for me, they miserably failed to build up to the 'twists' in a satisfying way). you're so right about the acting and the crows as well. ((lmao your sister is so real for that comment 😂 give her my love.)) and same, i am much more interested in a soc spin-off than a third season. the direction they seem to be going with the tgt storyline simply doesn't interest me all that much. still, for the casts sake, i hope they're renewed. i haven't read any info on the planned spin-off but they kind of teased the soc storyline at the end so does that mean the spin-off won't cover the ice court plot? and i am so happy to hear they'll (hopefully) dedicate more time to inej and her story in the spin-off. it's what my girl deserves!!! ((wish they would have focused more on her as an individual in sab too, tho...)). whether they only get a third season or a spin-off, i am interested to see what they do from here on out with the crows. frankly, i don't trust that it will be good ((mainly bc i trusted them with sab and look how that turned out lol)) but i am more than ready to be pleasantly surprised!

tbh? nah. i didn’t love the direction of king of scars/rule of wolves, though i did quite like getting to spend more time with nikolai since he’s my favorite character from the grisha trilogy, and i don’t really see soc3 as having nearly as much potential as the original soc duo did. kos/row is largely a case of wasted potential, and soc3 doesn’t have all that much to begin with, soooooo. yeah. i would much rather read post-canon novellas (or even full length novels maybe, but they seem more suited to something a little shorter) about the crows’ futures (inej’s pirate adventures, a heist or other criminal venture kaz pulls off with the remaining dregs, kanej’s future relationship developments (though i also do LOVE post canon kanej fic so it’s entirely possible i would just be disappointed by anything made canon) wesper dealing with merchant council drama and trying to enact reform, nina… idk i want a better arc for nina in general than what she got in kos/row but i guess if i had to go with what’s canon i might appreciate something that shows how difficult it is to enact change in fjerda kinda like what i’m envisioning for wesper) than soc3. it’s never gonna happen but that’s my dream in terms of getting more books.

i’m gonna assume that this is talking about the different grishaverse countries, since this is a gv ask game? kerch all the way. maybe this is bc the grishaverse as it stands rn peaked with six of crows but i think kerch is a really neat setting. ketterdam feels almost alive, a character itself in the way it’s shaped the crows’ lives. it’s a really vibrant city in all its awfulness. we don’t get much of southern kerch, but to me that’s a setting with a TON of potential. i’ve seen some great headcanons for it. (and one of my wips, the sower, takes place largely in southern kerch! it’s pretty slow going at the moment but i’m really hoping to pick it back up again soon. my sideblog for my fics/writing is @tealquills :))

also, i really liked what they did with novyi zem in season two of shadow and bone. it definitely doesn’t overtake kerch as a favorite, but i thought the cultural elements were really neat.

I know that from today to tomorrow I’m not actually a whole year older, just a day older, because that’s how time works, but it’s still just A Lot to realize that in 3 hours, I’ll be an adult. At least I’ll be able to vote! That’s a perk.

I finished SoC and am almost done with CK. Both just amazing books. I adore them. The writing is so PRETTY! “He needed to tell her…what? That she was lovely, and brave, and better than anything he deserved? That he was twisted, crooked, wrong, but not so broken that he couldn’t pull himself into some semblance of a man for her. That without meaning to, he’d begun to lean on her, to look for her, to need her around. He needed to thank her for his new hat.” Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh such a good romance, Kanej is. And Inej’s chapters a beautiful too. The one where she’s climbing up the incinerator always gets me.

Have you watched Shadow and Bone? They’ve changed a few too many things for my taste, but the cast is amazing! They all portray their characters super well. My friend and I watched it the other day while making bracelets for the Taylor Swift concert we’re going to in June.

Also, you are not failing at being a lawyer. You are learning to be one, and you are trying to become a good one, and that’s more than a hell of a lot of other people are doing. You have all the intelligence and tenacity and real, genuine GOODNESS inside of you already. You’ll pick up the actual law stuff quickly enough :)

The switch from seventeen to eighteen is a lot though. Here it's voting, buying alcohol, for some people giving blood (I'm too anemic and also something else for that though) and just generally being classed as an adult. Like you suddenly form the 18-25 group. You age out of a lot fo child's services. WEIRD.

I must reread at some point- but only once I've read the books I've not yet read because there are so many. I think my mum and sister getting me a Kindle was simultaneously the best and worst thing they ever did. Babel was on a deal a while back so I brought it and once I've read all the hard copy books I want to read I'm going to start it!! But yes, Kanej is everything.

I've started. I'm on episode six of season one, but the problem is that I remember nothing. Also I only care about the Crows. I tried reading Shadow and Bone years ago and I just couldn't get into it. The school librarian thought I'd enjoy Six of Crows though. "What are you doing here?" Kaz asked, not turning his head from the wall that he was facing.

He'd known she was there, of course he had. She hadn't exactly been trying to sneak up on him, and he always knew.

Inej paused before she replied, not wanting to give herself away straight away.

"Just here to say hello,"

Now Kaz turned to face towards the window, and looked at her suspiciously

"You're never just here to say hello. What business?"

"The razor gulls are going to start using the house next door as a drop point,"

Kaz nodded slowly and smiled. "Good to know. They're idiots if they think they can use a room so close to the Slat and not be caught out by the Wraith,"

Inej smiled at the nickname, she used to hate it, but everytime Kaz said it she seemed to like it a bit more. She crossed the room and sat down on the run down sofa in the corner of the room. This conversation had seemed so easy in her head, but now she couldn't seem to find the right words. She felt the cushion sink beside her and looked up to see Kaz sat beside her, stretching his bad leg out against the floor.

She looked at him, and took a deep breath.

"You've probably guessed that I'm not just here to tell you news about the razor gulls"

Kaz smiled slightly, "I had a feeling there might be something else,"

Inej dropped her gaze, she wasn't sure if she could say what she was about to while staring into those beautiful coffee eyes.

"I wanted to say sorry,"

"I thought the Suli didn't have a word for sorry,"

"Yes, but the Kerch do." She looked up now, fixing her eyes on the shoulder seam of Kaz's waistcoat. "I'm sorry, for what I said on the boat, on the way back from Fjerda. It wasn't fair of me to turn something you can't control into a weapon against you. I don't know what I'd do if you said something like that to me about my.. About the Menagerie. The truth is I want to stay with you, armour or no armour,"

They sat in silence for a moment. Then Kaz turned to face towards her. In a quick motion- as if he didn't want to allow himself to think- he removed his gloves, set them on the arm of the sofa and clasped her hands in his.

Kaz kept his eyes trained on their hands, linked together, and he spoke.

"I was 9 when I first came to Ketterdam, Jordie was 14. Pekka Rollins scammed us and we lost all our money. We were sleeping on the streets when we caught the Queens Lady Plague, we didn't even have a bed. I don't know how but I managed to survive it,"

Inej understood the silent end to that sentence - Jordie didn't.

"When they came round to collect the bodies my pulse must have been so slow that they didn't feel it," Kaz continued. "I woke up on the Reapers barge.

"I hardly made it out alive, I was weak and I'd never been the strongest swimmer anyway. I had to use Jordie to help keep afloat."

Kaz closed his eyes for a moment, no doubt seeing the memory again, he kept speaking without opening them.

"Now, whenever I feel skin, it feels like his. Bloated, rotten, dead,"

Inej sat in silence. She wasn't sure what she had expected, but that story certainly hadn't been it. She understood now, how Kaz had wanted to destroy Rollins, how he'd had to turn into a monster to survive, even as a child.

"I'll pray for him,"

"Don't, don't bother, he's not around to hear them, is he?"

"Then I'll pray for the brother that survived, just like I always do," Kaz shifted his gaze to meet her eyes. "I'll pray that he can stay safe, that he can keep being as ridiculously strong as he always has been. I'll pray that one day he won't feel this pain anymore,"

Kaz's voice sounded choked when he spoke. "Thank you,"

Inej squeezed his hands. "Every day you continue to amaze me Brekker,"

"Rietveld,"

Inej stared at Kaz. Why was he bringing up the fake name they'd used for Jesper's father when they were scamming the merchant council? What did Johannes Rietveld have to do with anything?

"What?"

"That's my real name, Kaz Rietveld,"

Kaz didn't know how he'd been able to say all of that, he'd hardly let himself touch those memories, let alone tried to articulate them to someone else. He was glad he had though, he felt lighter, more comfortable somehow, like the waves had receded, even though he was still holding Inej's hands.

Her voice was quiet when she finally spoke. No, not quiet, gentle.

"Why are you telling me all of this?"

/Because I trust you, because you're the only person I've felt properly comfortable around for years, because I care about you a ridiculous and unfathomable amount/

"You won't use it against me,"

It was the closest to the truth he could manage, for now. "And if I told anyone else, you'd find out anyway,"

Inej laughed at that, and like always he seemed to forget everything but that sound.

Kaz had been joking, but he knew it was true. Jesper couldn't keep a secret to save his life, he'd proved that before they went to ice court, and the others would probably all think Inej should know (he didn't exactly think he'd been subtle with his reaction whenever she was in danger). And if anyone else somehow found out, she'd hear about it; after all, she was the Wraith.

Neither spoke for a while after that, they didn't seem to have anything else to say. Eventually, Kaz broke the silence.

"It's late, I have a job to do in the morning,"

Inej nodded, stood up and moved towards the window. He watched her until she was perched on the windowsill, he remembered that day, when she'd been feeding the crows in that exact position.

"Wait,"

He shouldn't have been letting himself be so sentimental, so vulnerable. But he felt like he'd bared his soul tonight, and he didn't think sleep would let him off without reliving those memories tonight.

"Stay?"

Inej nodded, seeming to hear everything he couldn't say. She took her usual seat opposite his desk, and started to methodically clean her knives. She stayed there while he changed out of his clothes and organised his things. Not speaking, or even looking at him. But it was enough, she was his rock; his reminder that he wasn't 9 anymore, that he was stronger than his memories.

When he laid in his bed that night, he felt more relaxed than he had ever expected to be. He rolled over so that he could see Inej when he opened his eyes.

Later that night he awoke, covered in sweat that felt an awful lot like seawater. He looked over in the gloom and saw Inej asleep, her head resting on his desk. Somehow, even asleep she looked magical. He walked across the room to sit opposite her, letting her presence calm his racing heart. He sat there for a while, but it wasn't until he rose to go back to bed that he saw his gloves clutched in Inej's hands, the fingers resting under her cheek

Inej laughed, her hood falling back from her hair. That’s the laugh, he murmured.

But she would never know what it was like for him to see Nina pull her close, watch Jesper loop his arm through hers, what it was to stand in doorways and against walls and know he could never draw nearer. But I’m here now , he thought wildly.

His eyes scanned her face as they always had, closely, hungrily, snatching at the details of her like the thief he was—the even set of her dark brows, the rich brown of her eyes, the upward tilt of her lips. He didn’t deserve peace and he didn’t deserve forgiveness, but if he was going to die today, maybe the one thing he’d earned was the memory of her—brighter than anything he would ever have a right to—to take with him to the other side.
