Ben is the natural protector and outspoken one, but he supports Reed's leadership. When Reed accidentally causes Ben's physical disfigurement, the scientist vows to cure him, regardless of the cost. There is plenty of fun ribbing between them, but no bullying, pettiness, or condescension. Reed values the academically laidback Ben's scientific input and life experience. No matter where either stands with the women in their lives or setbacks they suffer, they are never alone due to their ironclad loyalty to each other.

With such uniquely amazingly chemistry between Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen then even more with James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender, the downfall of the Charles and Erik friendship is as tragic as it is senseless. Erik became a perpetual monster and Charles his repeat victim. The ending of the stupid phoenix movie was completely unearned and sickening after all the cruelty Erik showed Charles in that film alone. The younger actors were deliberately kept apart after First Class due to Fox wanting to avoid gay implications. Why they did not simply tell the actors to stop catering to slash fans is unknown. Wasted opportunity is a sad understatement.
