#203: Takano Tofu (2023)
"Takano Tofu" is a Japanese drama film. It's about a father and a daughter running a traditional tofu shop in Onomichi, Hiroshima Prefecture. They spend the same day every day, but each, the father and the daughter, changes their everyday lives by having the opportunity of new beginnings.
The film was brilliant. It illustrated a beautiful Japanese cityscape and ways of living very well. The film moved me. Moreover, it made me laugh by including some comedy factors. The film is a must-see.

the official one piece channel released a music video to promote volume 109 much like how they did with volume 106 and the start of egghead:
youtube
and i watched it and i started bawling almost instantly. below the cut is the rough (very rough, i'm not great at translating music) translation i did of the lyrics, so you all can cry along with me.
例えば誰か一人の命と/tatoeba dareka hitori no inochi to 引き換えに世界を救えるとして/hikikae ni sekai wo sukueru toshite 僕は誰かが名乗り出るのを待っているだけの男だ/boku wa dareka ga nanorideru no wo matteiru dake no otoko
if, for example, by saving the life of one person i could save the whole world i would be a man who only waits for that one person to declare himself
愛すべきたくさんの人達が/aisubeki takusan no hitotachi ga 僕を臆病者に変えてしまったんだ/boku wo okubyoumono ni kaete shimattanda
to all the many people dear to me i sadly became a coward
小さい頃に身振り手振りを/chiisai goro ni miburiteburi wo 真似てみせた/manete miseta 憧れになろうだなんて/akogare ni narou da nante 大それた気持ちはない/daisoreta kimochi wa nai
the gestures i learned when i was small i've showed you how to copy and i've come to yearn for something no grand ambitious feeling
でもヒーローになりたい/demo 'hero' ni naritai ただ一人君にとっての/tada hitori kimi ni totte no つまずいたり転んだりするようなら/tsumazuitari korondari suru you nara そっと手を差し伸べるよ/sotto te wo sashinoberu yo
but i want to become a hero if only to you alone if you ever stumble or fall i'll quietly reach out a hand
駄目な映画を盛り上げるために/dame na eiga wo moriageru tame ni 簡単に命が捨てられていく/kantan ni inochi ga suterareteiku 違う 僕らは見ていたいのは/chigau, bokura wa miteitai no wa 希望に満ちた光だ/kibou ni michita hikari da
for the sake of bringing this no-good movie to its climax lives were simply thrown away but no, what we dream of seeing is the light that has fueled our hopes
僕の手を握る少し小さな手/boku no te wo nigiru sukoshi chisana te すっと胸の淀みを溶かしていくんだ/sutto mune no yodomi wo tokashiteikunda
that small hand gripping mine all of a sudden melts all the hesitation from my heart
人生をフルコースで深く味わうための/jinsei wo furucosu de fukaku ajiwau tame no 幾つものスパイスが誰もに用意されていて/ikutsumono supaisu ga daremo ni youi sareteite 時には苦かったり/toki ni wa nigakattari 渋く思うこともあるだろう/shibuku omou koto mo aru darou そして最後のデザートを笑って食べる/soshite saigou no dezaato wo waratte taberu 君の側に僕は居たい/kimi no soba ni boku wa itai
so that you might deeply savor life as a full-course meal with all its many spices laid out for everyone though at times it may be bitter and full of sour thoughts and at last you'll eat dessert laughing i want to be by your side

i certainly came to adulthood in the midst of these times that are far too cruel but i'm not sad, and i'm not in pain although things have just repeated like this yes, although things will repeat like this i'm happy, my dearest
ずっとヒーローにありたい/zutto 'hero' ni aritai ただ一人君にとっての/tada hitori kimi ni totte no ちっとも謎めいてないし/chittomo nazomeitenai shi 今更もう秘密はない/imasara mou himitsu wa nai
i always want to be a hero if only to you alone without any mystery left after everything, i have no secrets anymore

やばい Alternatives | Vocab
Step 1 of 「伝える力」 が伸びる! 12歳までに知っておきたい語彙力図鑑 focuses on teaching you synonyms for words you would typically use to describe your emotions. There are synonyms for words like やばい, エモい, and the like. This particular post will focus on the information that they've given about やばい。
The book also ranks the words' difficulty level, with 1 star being an "of course you know this" to 5 stars being "even adults probably don't know this and you're about to blow them away with your vocabulary and make them pull out their dictionary." Because of this, you may see words that you encountered quickly as a Japanese learner (that a native speaker 12 year old may not have encountered yet) and vice versa on the list below.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
やばい
Because やばい is a word that can be used to express nearly any emotion (much like how OMG can be used in many contexts in American English), the book did also make sure to put the contexts in which the alternative word would be appropriate.
危うい (あやうい)- dangerous; in danger; facing imminent danger ❖This is to be used when dangerous situations are imminent. The way they described it was "危険が迫っている状態" ▶︎Their example: 危うい所でピンチを脱出した。
危険 (きけん)- dangerous; risky; uncertain; precarious; in danger ❖This is to be used when a situation may lead to not-so-good/dangerous outcomes. ▶︎Their example: そんなに高い所からジャンプしたら、危険だよ。
驚異的 (きょういてき)- wonderful; astounding; marvelous ❖This is to be used when something passes a level of surprise that you can express. ▶︎Their example: 大谷選手の達成した記録は驚異的だ。
最高 (さいこう)- best; supreme; wonderful; highest; maximum; supreme ❖This is to be used when describing something of the highest status/dignity/ranking. (This is relative in comparison to other things.) ▶︎Their example: 夏休みに友達と見に行った映画が、最高に面白かった。
素晴らしい (すばらしい)- wonderful; splendid; magnificent ❖ This is used to describe something that's elegant/praiseworthy/splendid, things that are desirable, and things that admirable. ▶︎Their example: 富士山の山頂から眺める景色は、息をのむほどに素晴らしい。
Yojijukugo (四字熟語)
This section also includes four-character compound idioms (yojijukugo) that can be associated with the word we're focusing on expanding our vocabulary from.
絶体絶命 (ぜったいぜつめい)- desperate situation with no escape; being driven into a corner; being cornered; last extremity ❖ You would use this when you find yourself in a situation that there's no conceivable way you could think of making it out in the way that you truly desire. ▶︎Apparently you can use it in phrases like this 「絶体絶命のピンチ」 BONUS: I found an example online that also uses it to mean "stalemate" and the example is a cop and a suspect both pointing a gun at each other.
最上無二 (さいじょうむに)- there is nothing else like it in this world; it's an unparalleled marvel ❖They listed this one at 5 stars (aka, the adults are gonna be surprised that you know this and also go look it up) and I can certainly see why--I couldn't find any official English translations of it. Here's the definition the book gave: この世に二つとなく、最もすばらしいこと。「最上」は最もすぐれていること、「無二」は同じ物がないことを意味するよ。
SOMEONE PLEASE CORRECT ME IF MY UNDERSTANDING OF THIS LAST YOJIJUKUGO IS INCORRECT SO THAT I CAN LEARN IT PROPERLY!! I BESEECH THEE!! I IMPLORE YOU!!
Anyways, the next post will be alternatives words for かわいい and エグい

#383: The Voices at War (2024)
"The Voices at War" is a Japanese war drama film based on a true story about announcers during the Second World War. The Japanese army wanted to use the power of voices through radio broadcasting to drive war advantageously. Under such circumstances, announcers agonize about their jobs because they have to tell Japanese citizens the wrong facts.
The film was brilliant. It was thought-provoking and gave us a new perspective. The theme, which is about the point of view of announcers, was so good. The movie is worth watching.

TMS are teaming up with Madras for a Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro themed footwear collection!
The limited-edition kicks are based on the reoccurring Lupin gang, plus the beloved Clarisse de Cagliostro. While they would no doubt help make the ultimate cosplay, all six look stylish enough to wear when simply out and about.
Currently, stock appears to be limited to Japan, however it may be possible to import (although do beware the dreaded import fee)!
