My Adventures With Superman is honestly a really impressively good example of how you can make an adaptation radically different and new while still doing justice to the source material by just approaching said source from a place of love and respect. The show is unabashedly and upfrontly meant to be a very explorative and experimental take on Superman that does the classic premise in new ways, revamped for another time and medium.
So many of the characters, designs, aesthetics, and world feel so extremely unfamiliar and unlike “traditional” Superman. But it still FEELS like Superman. The core, the spirit, the SOUL is absolutely and unmistakably there. The characters are all incredibly in-character and instantly recognizable. The plotting and writing feels straight off the page of the comic.
Even with major reinventions, this is so obviously and clearly Superman. Not some hoary “deconstruction” or obnoxiously self-aware “parody”, it’s just unabashedly honest-to-God played absolutely straight Superman. Even through all the changes, it’s that same classic, undistilled, nostalgic vibe of a Superman comic with Clark as a lovable, goofy guy with powers trying to be an example to the world, fighting crazy bad guys, helping old ladies across the street, and winking to the reader after Lois and Jimmy fail to see through his disguise yet again before cringing because Perry yelled at him for calling Perry “chief” again.
Hot, overeager tomboy Lois Lane is a bit different from usual but she’s so clearly still that same gorgeous would-be star reporter that every Superman falls in love with. Jimmy has been reimagines as kooky conspiracy buff, but he’s still ultimately Superman’s Pal who gets into wacky situations by virtue of being Superman’s Pal. Perry, Lombard, Ronnie, and Cat are all very different from the comics superficially — hell, Ronnie has had his gender flipped — but they are all still instantly recognizable as the same eccentric bunch of newsfolk they were there. Livewire and the Intergang members are all totally changed but at their center, they’re the same; same powers and gimmicks, etc.. Dr. Ivo is now a douchey techbro and yet he’s still fulfilling the very same role he does in the comics as a self-centered mad scientist who creates things that spiral beyond his control. Even Parasite, the most radically altered of all to the point of no longer being sentient, is still identifiable as his core concept of a monster that feeds on the lifeforce of others and becomes more powerful as he does, while also weakening when he can’t do so.
I really, really like it. It’s a wonderfully imaginative and well-put-together take on a very old series that really brings the concept into the modern age in a way that hasn’t really been done successfully outside the comics since the DCAU back in the 90s and early 2000s. People writing Superman or just superhero fiction in general should absolutely take notes from this show.

Livewire would make a great Superboy (Conner) villain actually hear me out
you know how the early Superboy comics leaned into making him an exploited child celebrity superhero clout machine? Imagine Livewire- a controversy-courting, inflammatory, clout-chasing influencer as a foil to that!!!
Also the different ways they approach punk? Conner can be the one who actually embodies anti-establishment ideas, while Livewire uses punk as an aesthetic to just *seem* counter-culture to push her conservative views to her audience. Anyway what if I did something about this.
#ramblings#jesncin dc meta#I think there's a way to revitalize the themes of the old superboy comics without it being gross#the problem with being a comic artist with ideas is that you can just draw them

Observations watching My Adventures with Superman Episode 1
- Jack Quaid may be one of my favorite Superman voice actors?! Like so far?!? He embues Clark with a lot of awkward nerd energy I really like, he comes across as very sincere and kind in a way that fits this version. I’ll need to see Clark wear the suit but he has my hopes up. Who knew the way to make Superman appeal to audiences was to make him a kissable nerd?
-Him working at a donut shop and eating three large packages of donuts is friggin’ hilarious. Why be embarrassed, Clark? Lois seems into it.
- I like Lois and Jimmy in this too. Lois’ a go-getter and fun, we’re starting her off as an intern so we can see she eagerly wants to prove herself but also has room to grow. I like that she learns a lesson on keeping her “team” on the know when she risks their careers chasing a story Perry told her not to do. Same things to be said with Jimmy, who’s turn as a conspiracy nut adds plenty of personality to him- that being said, I hope he gets more depths later. Glad to see that him and Clark are roommates in this continuity!
- The animation is pretty nice for the most part. Colorful, flows well, definitely appreciate the anime aesthetic they’re going with. Only thing i don’t like was the CGI robots.
- Did not expect Livewire to be a mercenary so divorced from her origins like this. She plays her role well, but I do find it a peculiar change. Then again, given the previews they’re aiming to have more high tech villains to start with so maybe they felt this was the best way of putting her in there.
- Perry’s fun, but I hope the NEWSKID LEGION stick around. Those kids are such scamps and it’s fun to see Lois try to argue with Flip for the news source.
- While it’s nice to see Clark and Lois have chemistry this early on, I do think maybe the ship tease was a bit much to start with. They just met, just because they’re destined to be together doesn’t mean you should skip out on developing it a bit.
- Superman’s symbol appeared over Clark as he was pushing himself. I think the suit is going to be some sort of hard light projection Clark has to concentrate on making in this version, which I’m okay with.
-The episode is super delightful. I had a smile on my face watching it the whole time, I can’t wait to see more!
Def worth the recommendation, it’s the beginning of a fun series!

My Adventures With Superman - A Rambling Set Of Thoughts
Okay, I know I don't USUALLY make posts like this and I especially hate getting cynical and nitpicky about these sorts of things because I just don't wanna contribute to all the negativity on the internet... But this is something I just couldn't shake.
So last night I watched the first season of My Adventures With Superman and... I have a lot of mixed feelings about to be brutally honest which is a shame because I know SO many people really loved this show.
Spoilers for season 1 obviously
For the most this show is great and it has a good foundation for Superman and gets him and his relationship with Lois so right. I love how Clark is this big, soft himbo twink dork who really reminds me of Adora from She-Ra and Lois is this fun tomboy who falls head over heels for him. And to be honest, all of their moments were genuinely the highlight of the show for me. SERIOUSLY ITS LIKE CLARK AND LOIS BUT MADE FOR SAPPHICS LIKE ME AND I ADORE THEM
I love the art style and animation too and really does put a very fresh new aesthetic on DC stuff. Sure, it's a bit too much like She-Ra and Voltron in places, but for DC, it's a really good breath of fresh air. Seriously, look at the designs of Deathstroke and Livewire!
But sadly, that's not all the show is and this is where I have to sadly talk about my negatives with it.
Sooooo… this show was written a lot of the same people who wrote She-Ra and it seems to be a big fan of various anime things too, especially Dragon Ball Z and Neon Genesis Evangelion.
To that end, the show has basically... turned Superman into a mixture of Adora and Goku, not just in terms of personality traits and in Adora's case, her relationship with Catra (Seriously, if Clark was a woman and blonde, I would swear she and Lois would just be Catradora)
This sadly does apply to how this show portrays the Kryptonians, who are implied to MOSTLY be a race of evil conquerors who tried to attack Earth only for Krypton to be destroyed. This is VERY similar to how the First One's were depicted in She-Ra, as well as how the Saiyans were in Dragon Ball Z. One could also argue that their attack on Earth is a weird mashup of the movie Arrival and the Second Impact from Evangelion but that's me getting very nitpicky.
So naturally, we have Adora and Goku's traits being applied to Superman. And…. those traits don't really work for Superman, at all. Now I should be clear, it seems to be that Jor-El and Lara were actually like rebels fighting the evil Kryptonians (which is ironically Mara's whole deal... you seeing the She-Ra pattern here yet?) but like... I don't like this idea at all. Poor Clark even has a fucking breakdown later on and thinks he's actually some evil weapon meant to conquer Earth AGAIN just like Adora from She-Ra being used as a weapon by the First One's. And I just feel bad for him because he's trying to be the good decent Superman we all love... but he's getting dragged into this plot that pretty much breaks him... and I don't really like it.
And then there's a whole subplot about Lois meeting alternate versions of herself and discovering alternate versions of Superman who are evil (which is bizarrely how Kryptonite is introduced in this show) which.... yeah I don't like that plot either. Nor am I the fan of Task Force X pulling the whole "the Government is treating clark as hostile because they think he's an evil alien" plot which I have gotten kinda tired of seeing in a lot of modern Superhero media. It's either Superheroes being hated or hunted by the government or being made to work for them.
And you know where this all probably came from for this show in particular? Fucking Zack Synder and Man of Steel. It's kind of ironic because a lot of this show feels like its in response to the Synderverse, like it feels obligated to comment on how people see Superman now because of those crappy movies, something that I know James Gunn is probably gonna do as well with his superman movie basically a live action version of Superman vs the Elite.
And just…. no, none of this shit is really necessary nor is it a good idea. Because it kinda takes away some bits of Superman that I like. I know the show isn't done yet but… I can already make a good guess of where it's going to go. And where it's going… idk if I'm gonna like a whole lot.
It is clearly a show wanting to be different from all that has been done before with Superman…. but by being different for the sake of it, it's doing a lot of stuff I just don't like.
I just want there to be a day when we get a Superman thing that doesn't have to justify the man's own existence and role in a story because some objectivist edgelord made a bad movie with him in it eleven years ago.
So yeah, by turning Superman into more or less mostly Adora from She-Ra... I think they might have messed him a bit in my eyes. I hope season 2, whenever that comes out hopefully pushes things in a more hopeful direction and I could genuinely call this a good adaption of Superman. Because there is so much potential with just from the relationship of Clark and Lois alone that tells me that these creators just GET how Superman's character is.
So yeah, I hope that long rambling thought made sense.

Superman: The Animated Series (Recommended)
I roasted this back in the day because of how tame his power level was, but this is a young Superman story done right.
This show tackles cool characters & concepts ranging from Mxy to Darkseid to the Legion of Superheroes.
And featuring a Kara (NOT Bore-El) surprisingly that doesn't piss me off with her very existence. Imagine my surprise to find out she's NOT miraculously Superman's Cousin who ALSO just happened to survive the explosion because Jor-EL just HAPPENED to have a brother who JUST HAPPENED to be a Scientist who HAPPENED to have exact same idea to Kara but for some reason not himself or his wife.
Fan-fic tier garbage. GARBAGE.
But Kara In-Ze decent, she's a good kid.
In fact, I wish Kara In-Ze was in that Superman Returns deleted scene when he went back to Krypton, and he finds her on Argo or something. Some of kind of payoff for that 5 years he was gone
Back to the show. Clark is a sassy, witty chad.
He's not some Him-bro purse puppy like someone else I know in recent memory I wish I could carve out of my skull. He's a vanilla dork big-brother (like Welling's take) who's underwhelming enough to sell the role but not overdoing it to point it's cartoonish & annoying.
He’s good at his job, both of them. And the more times he puts on the cape, the more the universe expands, the guy just attracts trouble and all he’s tryna do is the right thing.
I thought initially him not being overtly geeky would've defeated the illusion but in fact he's still so bland as a person compared to Superman he doesn't have to go out of his way to try not be suspicious, which now that i'm thinking about it would make him more suspicious.
And the sass carries over to Superman, this character (from here to JLU) cops attitude A LOT, it's funny see. A very human Superman with a wide range of emotions as he's in this Superhero career, yet stoic and collected and I love it.
Stubborn as an Ox at times, especially as he gets older & develops more of an ego. He's a leader, but not beyond all reason. A good guy, reliable, very human.
In fact, in a lot of ways, a Shonen protagonist with a hint of slice of life..
I like this guy.
Besides Smallville/ Superman/Superman & Lois/ hell even that Lois & Clark show was charming-
This is THE post-modern Superman, done right.
Honorable mention: 40's Fleischer Superman
I recommend TAS to JL & JLU, since it is technically one timeline (though JL S1 he was nerfed to shit), but it's all part of his story.
Top 3 favorite Lois Lanes of all time.
youtube
The music is so peaceful, grandiose at the same time. The composer (Shirley Walker *Rest in peace*) did the tracks justice, she did her part to bring this project to life with a sound reminiscent of Williams work.
I really like the Retro-Futuristic aesthetic of Metropolis and various other set pieces compared to Gotham & Smallville, it genuinely looks like a city of the future. Reminds me of the Jetsons
Check out the making of Superman: The Animated Series, unlike a certain recent sloppy attempt at Superman with a certain "Lois-Chan" this take possesses so much care and thought & premeditated design.
youtube
The character writing has that old-school wit to it, it's mature. Well executed. Where most of the characters sound witty, snarky but professional it has the 40s - 1950s chemistry. Very solid. Vs these days where most characters are random, loud, quirky, talk too much and just annoying lol
As far as Superman lore goes, one of the few things they didn't put in there was Eradicator, Superboy, etc. This show COVERS a lot of the groundwork of Superman content. 3 Seasons+ of content- even Livewire is in here.
If I were to have a complaint (and no it's not Kara), it would be the pre-Singer/Snyder era of how his powers are presented and engineered into visual/sound format. I really like how Singer introduced Superman causing sonic-booms
-and how Zack translated his power into fights.
In TAS show it lacks the aesthetic, the punch/emphasis, he's strong but.... it doesn't lean into it enough for me at times.
Kind of like how My Hero Academia has the visuals down 10/10 but the SOUND EFFECTS are soooooo weak, just a punch of whooshes 24/7, it's so frustrating lol.
Again, It's very tame but while it's underwhelming, how he flies is sort of majestic, like he's gliding on the air, very angelic.
And he is young and the later installments pick it up eventually.
And as shown Supergirl represents some good feats too (And I am proud to say that because I actually like this version of Kara)
Surprisingly My Adventures with Lois-Chan tried to mix it up with the sfx & action, but even that show was lacking in so so so many areas, but I'm going to leave that alone for now.
Superman: TAS
grounded Superman version Zack should've did more homework on. Cavill deserved to act-adapt this Superman.

Having mulled it over, I don't think MAWS actually ditched the idea of a bad faith media figure who stirs hate against Superman to boost their career, they just split that off from Livewire into their version of Vicki Vale.
I think that was probably the right call? Having your antagonistic reporter character get superpowers and start throwing lightning bolts means she can't really do reporter things anymore. DCAU Livewire after her first appearance is just another supervillain, made distinct by her abilities and aesthetic rather than any metaphorical significance.
I see what you're saying, and to an extent I can see the merits of that decision.
There is an argument to be made that an unethical career-chaser like Vicki Vale is probably more dangerous than a supervillain because she still hurts society, just in a form that Superman can't punch away.
But that still leaves Livewire with basically nothing to say/do.
It robs the character of the commentary–if someone like Candice Owen or Ben Shapiro could get the same amount of money and notoriety from making videos about tennis players, they'd do that with the same amount of zeal. They do not care what they're doing to the world, just so long as they feel important.
That is Livewire.
They do seem to be building her up as an important villain going forward–being the first known metahuman who has powers without the aid of Kryptonian tech–but the issue still stand: what is she supposed to be represent?
As far as I can tell, she's essentially the purest form of a supervillain–someone only a superhero can beat. . . That's it.
And they could've gotten anyone to do that.
Parasite has more to say than she does, and he was one of the show's stand-out characters.

Thoughts on the new intro sequence for My Adventures?
Adore it.
youtube
More than anything shown so far, this perfectly captures the "anime Superman" aesthetic the show is going for. Quick thoughts:
Love the rock & roll theme, wish it had some catchy lyrics to go with it. All my favorite childhood cartoon themes like Ben 10 had catchy earworm themes that I can recall with ease because of how many times I heard them. Welcome reprieve from every Superman adaption going with an orchestral theme regardless.
Superman winking at the camera is enough to make a hardcore Superman fanboy cry. God we're finally getting a Clark who isn't a stick in the mud, and it feels so good.
Clark and Lois are so fucking cute together, and Jimmy's reaction is hilarious.
Again it sticks out to me that while Jor-El shows up, there's no onscreen showing of the Kents in the intro. Could they actually be dead in this show? Don't want to get my hopes up but it's starting to feel like an actual possibility
Cackled that all three of the trio have their own "anime power up" moves
And finally we have the big showing of the villains. Starting from the center and going clockwise it looks like the shadowed figure is Brainiac, the smaller figure in front is either a spoiler character from the leaks (AI Lara, who I've just realized is basically this show's take on Eradicator) or Zod, then Livewire, Mxy, some kaiju monster that might be Parasite (hope not, I don't want a technological Parasite), someone who could be Bloodsport, Deathstroke, or Atomic Skull, then Amanda Waller, generic Intergang thugs, Silver Banshee, a guy I don't know but I've seen others speculate is a minor Intergang bad guy called Rough House, and finally a guy I'm guessing is Metallo.
Like the Kents the biggest omission that stands out is no Lex. Doesn't bother me at all to not have him for the first season.
Regarding the villain designs, I love Mxy's. His comic design of just being a regular dude in a suit is terrible. A 5D sorcerer-imp should look much more demonic or at least otherworldly, so their redesign is welcome. Waller looks fine and if that is Bloodsport I like their take on his DCEU redesign. Silver Banshee and Livewire I'm not a fan of. Making them tech based is boring and a downgrade from how they look in the comics. I guess Livewire will also be a member of Intergang to justify the change and that I'm fine with.
Metallo, if that is him, looks New 52 inspired which isn't my favorite design but is a great story foundation for his character if that's what they're drawing on. With the focus on Clark & Lois' romance I'm wondering if Corben will start out as a rival for Clark's affections, and with Waller in the mix we might get General Sam Lane, Waller, and Metallo hunting Superman. That would make for great drama - Clark and Lois are in love, Lois' dad is hunting her boyfriend, the guy trying to kill Clark is also trying to woo Lois, could be great. Kinda wish we had a love quadrangle going on with Clark starting off dating Livewire and Lois with Metallo, before the two hook up and their supervillain exes target their rivals (Metallo going after Clark and Livewire going after Lois respectively) in retaliation
Man if that's Bloodsport I hope he kicks Clark's ass and gets to look cool. If it's Deathstroke I hope Supes utterly bodies him.
Funny how amongst all the major redesigns, that silhouette looks like we will be getting a fairly straightforward Brainiac take
Final big thought regarding Lex's absence. Originally this show was greenlit for two seasons, and I hope that's still the case. I could see this first season being about humanity trying to bridge the gap with Superman's natural powers via tech. Brainiac is the big bad to stand out as an evil counterpart of both Superman's alien power and humanity's tech based enhancements. Then in S2 Lex arrives and he starts experimenting with the metagene. Silver Banshee and Livewire get redesigned to be more like their comic selves cause they unlock their metagene powers, Parasite and Bizarro are created, basically we see the rise of the "supervillain" to contrast with S1 being aliens and tech enhanced organized crime.

I Am Getting Tired Talking About the Designs
It is the main thing outside of Clois that I see talked about with My Adventures With Superman. I’ve even seen someone call the show’s style so far as ‘hyper realism’ because of how they’re doing the villain designs which... *stares at the person until holes bore into their skull* And here’s the thing: I don’t mind people complaining about the villains technically. The fact that both Livewire and Slade feel kind of samey next to each other doesn’t help the fact that the show is struggling to give its villains time to shine. They risk slipping into a territory where they feel there as a part of the mandate of this being a superhero show rather than interesting entities unto themselves and I’d be okay with people talking about that.
Or how about the fact that so far none have had a REALLY good or interesting fight with Superman so far? Ivo is the best on both fronts so far but otherwise we’ve see Clark grab someone’s fist before responding with an attack three times now and one of those was against a robot. The only one he hasn’t done it to is Livewire and she doesn’t exactly punch, does she?
I had my brother bitch at me yesterday, if you don’t want to talk about the villains, about Jimmy’s stuff needing a little more fleshing out if he’s suddenly going to be mopey about the two getting together, especially after pushing Clark and Lois towards each other at first. That isn’t an unfair complaint and even in my last review, for as much as I liked the episode, I still admitted there were issues and lacking payoffs, especially with Jimmy. There are issues. This isn’t a perfect show, though nothing should be perfect because perfect is boring. It probably does need to take a breath though because while it is shockingly well paced, it is juggling a lot at once and it is concerning for when one of the balls may drop.
But like... Unless they’re just fundamentally getting the character wrong with no chance for growing into their design, can we just stop bitching about them? Parasite from my knowledge was originally a dude who was fucked up by an experiment and went “Well, they can’t cure me so I guess I’m evil” which is way less interesting than actually having his personality and his personal goals be parasitic to some extent so that they match his powers thematically. I’ve heard Livewire is a cocky, annoying bitch. We all remember the “Smartest person here” banter, right? That bitch with real powers, and irreversible powers as was foreshadowed by her veins, is going to be INSUFFERABLE. And Slade? The fucker is twenty years younger, minimum, than his comic counterpart and has both eyes and his battle suit in the title sequence fits his aesthetics so maybe cut him some slack because his cocky attitude now is clearly setting up for a GLORIOUS fall.
Of course, this is all assuming the show does well by these characters but at least right now they definitely have potential to become like their comic counterparts, especially with the question of how Silver Banshee is getting her screams back after Clark broke her mask.
So unless you complaint is more than “I want them to look exactly like my comic books!” maybe let an adaptation be, you know, an adaptation. I mean, so far the show fits exactly how DC has marketed itself since... I dunno, from what I hear the New 52? Especially in television because *gestures at all the DC movies* so I might not be a comics guy but I absolutely see why DC was okay with this as the rights holder because this is EASILY the most interested I’ve been in literally ANY of Superman’s rogue’s gallery. And no, I’m not a comic book guy but I see people comparing the two and you know my response when people bring up the differences in design? Most of the time I’m curious. Like what is Siobhan like when she looks like some genetically altered mutant or just a straight up alien of some sort? What’s the backstory there? But I also enjoy the cocky, wanna be supervillain of Siobhan in the show with her glam rock hair and raspy voice.
But I will admit that I don’t know the pain of adaptation too well. The closest I’ve come is stuff like Guardians of Ga’Hoole (which frankly is a shockingly good movie for how much of a mess adapting that series to anything would be) and Percy Jackson, where I only bitched about Clarisse because making Annabethe Clarisse was both more boring and narratively pointless because Clarisse is KIND OF IMPORTANT to the second book of that series, bare minimum.
Nothing here strikes me like that and if you disagree... Let me know. I see adaptations like this as a chance to both enjoy something and learn but frankly, EVERYONE bitching about the designs and nothing else is just making me tired and that’s making me not want to learn which means afterwards, I won’t dig deeper which isn’t that what you want as a fellow fan of the character?
