Knitting (and all crafts really) PSA:

It is not normal for it to hurt.

If you have pain while crafting, take a break, and if you still feel it, find some stretches (searching “knitting stretches” or whatever craft you’re doing will give you some great things to do!).

If there’s a pattern of pain occurring while you’re crafting, change the movements you are doing. There are loads of methods to get to the same results and different things work for different people.

(For knitting, some styles include English knitting or throwing (yarn in the right hand); a subset of that is flicking; Continental knitting (picking) is a style with yarn held in the left hand, and similar methods include Norwegian purling and Portuguese knitting. There are infinite personal variations but those are the big categories, so you have many many options.)

I’ve seen far too many people say that pain is normal and you should just keep going. NO. STOP IT. You’re not nobly suffering for your art, you’re risking setting yourself up for long-term pain and possibly needing surgery. I’ve been knitting since 2009 and have carpal tunnel from my barista days, so I know how this goes over time, and it’s a) constantly kind of ouchie and 2. has to be managed all the time: I held my phone too long? no knitting today! I typed at the wrong angle? Guess I’ll be recovering for a couple days.

Find a form that is comfortable for you and you’ll be able to craft longer and enjoy it more while you do.

*Please note: if you have physical disabilities and/or chronic illnesses, you know how to manage this and where your own pain thresholds are, and you know what it’s like to pay for having overdone it. I’m screeching more in the direction of people who aren’t used to managing that kind of thing. Carry on!

Yes, AI art is bad. Yes, I do not want to spread it around. Yes, AI art can often easily be picked out if you just pay attention to the details and see what's wrong.

But the ADHD-ridden racoon that I have for a brain is absolutely shitty at actually picking up on details, it's kind of an inherent problem. I can look at a full counter and not see the exact item I want there. My raccoon brain skids across the details like it's wearing ice skates to cross the street and a water main burst last night before a deep freeze.

Life is always gonna be better if you don't assume malice and yell at them for an easily corrected mistake. You can point out a problematic post without taking out your frustration with AI art on others. Thanks.

reading your christmas drabble oh i suddenly thought about how MGS, in a way, has found in He Tian kinda what he needed from a father figure he lost in his childhood - protection, safety, that kind of guardian, who can be stronger than him (even though he doesn’t want his protection etc).

And how He Tian has found in MGS that warm unconscious care, a domestic peace, a feeling of home he didn’t get from his mother who died too soon.

and on a similar note, I find it satisfying that their personalities manage to strike a near-perfect balance to match each other’s needs. he tian is overbearing and guan shan’s pride hates that, but if he tian was any less adamant in protecting/pursuing him, they probably wouldn’t be as close as they are now. likewise, even though he tian loves being the center of attention, if guan shan was too openly expressive about his feelings for him all the time (i.e. like the girls at school who fawn over him), he tian would probably find him disingenuous and boring

it all seems so counterintuitive when you consider their personalities at a superficial level, but it makes perfect sense when you dig a little deeper!

Cautionary Tale on Carbon Monoxide

So, for the last 2 weeks or so my smoke alarm/carbon monoxide alarm has been beeping sporadically. I paid it no mind because there was no smoke, nothing was burning and I did not think it could be anything else. I assumed the alarm or batteries were going bad because they had been here forever ago.

So, we changed the batteries and bought a new alarm, and installed them through the house a week ago. The beeping stopped. However, a few days ago while I was cooking the beeping came back. Again, no smoke in the home and nothing was burning. We are searching trying to figure out why it keeps going off.

I constantly have my essential oil diffuser plugged in and running so some searches came back saying certain essential oils might set off the alarm if strong enough and my 16-year-old has been fear rubbing herself with Citronella essential oils(repellent for mosquitoes) because whenever the door opened these new breed mosquitos fly in and she is terrified if her face and body looking like a swollen pepperoni pizza🙄😂. (The concerns of a 16-year-old who was looking out for her upcoming first day of school face card status lmao)

Finally, after some YT videos and Google searches, we began to suspect it was beeping because of carbon monoxide. So we hurry and get out of the house, food still on the stove half cooked, and wait for the gas/electric company to come to investigate and fix the problem.

When the tech comes he walks inside the house and instantly the machine he carried to check the PPM set off a reading of 41. This level is highly dangerous and prolonged exposure can result in health risks and possibly death.😳

He continued to walk through the house and found pockets in the house where the PPM was 38-41(still dangerous). He goes into the kitchen and instantly says, I see your problem. He goes to the stove and points to my favorite, can't live without have used almost every time I cook 11" Copper Chef casserole pot and says this is the culprit.

Apparently, the size of the pot covers my entire burner so there is no ventilation happening under the pot which is bad. He then points to another favorite pot on the back burner and says this one is also bad because of the size of the pot. He turned on the fire under the Copper Chef pot and instantly his machine went up to 144 PPM😳.

I was appalled. He asked about how we all were feeling and asked who the cook in the house was and of course it was me✋🏽. I felt fine. I usually always have headaches and feel tired, he said I could be suffering from long-term carbon monoxide exposure and should go to the hospital to be sure.

To make this longer story just plain ol' long, I say all of this to caution you guys on pot sizes for your gas stove burners and to say it could be the things/ways you least expect.

Tips from the gas/electric company tech

-Make sure your pot is not bigger/wider than your burner flames.

-Turn on your overhead vent or open your kitchen windows when cooking for either or both of these: 1) If your pots are bigger than the burner flames or 2) To take an extra level of safety.

-If you are using bigger pots try to open closet doors throughout your home because the carbon monoxide can creep into the closed closet and remain there for hours.

-In your gas using ovens do not have any liners or protectors(the ones you put down to prevent spills or drips as you bake) on the bottom of the oven if they come anywhere near the two ventilation slits in the oven(where the flames/heat rises).

-If you have done all of the above and constantly feel lightheaded, dizzy, persistent headaches, fatigue, sleepiness, be safe and just get it checked out in the ER or Urgent Care.

Be safe out there y'all. Carbon Monoxide is known as a silent killer.

Either way, you click out of curiosity only to find you’ve already been blocked. That’s because she’s a terf & preemptively blocks the blogs of trans people & allies.

She used to be more active on the blogs @/ sespursongles and @/ oikabooks before pivoting to the more innocent-seeming current blogs, hedgehog-moss (the main) and exhaled-spirals (the side blog).

If you aren't sure if you have access to polls yet, here's how you find it:

On desktop, the poll option will appear highlighted in orange when you create a text post. Polls are a new element, or content block, that you can add to text, they're not an entirely separate post type with a new icon in the header, which may be causing confusion for those used to the web interface.

This feature is only available in the new editor, not the legacy editor.

In the app (at least on iOS), the poll option will appear in the content menu to the right of the audio button when you create a new post. Obviously make sure your app is up-to-date as well.

Also note that polls can't be added to reblogs, only original posts, so the option won't show up on reblogs.

Yet Another Fandom PSA - tagging ships

Hi, it's me again.

Today I come with a small (ish?) pet peeve regarding proper tagging - tagging ships.

(⬆ This is where the magic happens)

What should you tag in "Relationships"?

Tag only the main relationship(s) that show up in the story. The relationship the fic is really about. Is about siblings? Is about a romantic relationship? Is about a platonic ship? Tag that, and only that.

Note: For Romantic relationship, use Character A/Character B. For Gen and Platonic relationships, use Character A & Character B

Don't tag relationships that are not relevant, or appear as background.

That includes, secondary ships that develop in the background or are established "off-screen" and don't actually have any screen time in the fic.

What if I want to warn/describe a ship that does show up anyway?

You can tag them as background in Additional Tags, adding some information that nuance how they show up if you want. For example, if it's a mention, or past relationship or if it's a temporary pairing but not the endgame.

eg. "Background Character A/Character B" or "Minor Character A/Character B" or "Mentions of Character A/Character B" or "Past Character A/Character B"

You can also use the Summary to specify and give context in what manner these relationships show up.

Why would I care? Is just a tag.

There are many reasons why tagging relationships properly is beneficial for the fandom as a whole.

First of all, keeps your tags clean and simple. It is easier for people browsing the Archive to know at a glance what the fic is about if your tags give the right amount of information and nothing more.

Second, it makes very difficult to filter if you like a ship that's not as popular as others. It can get very frustrating expecting your favorite ship to appear only to get to chapter 13 and neither of your ship shows up.

Third, the "otp:true" trick can only do so much.

If this is the first time you hear about "otp:true", it is a filtering trick that will automatically filter out all fics that have more than 1 "/" ship tagged in Relationship, leaving only the ones that have just the main ship tagged.
