{Catastrophe Pt 9} [ cxttynoir ]
"Gigi! I know what Toralei's up to!" Almost desperately, Catty took one of the genie's hands in both of her own. "She's an, she's an animal for using you like this! But you shouldn't have to go along with her. You know that, right?"
Without waiting for an answer, the werecat pressed on. "Or just, let me help you! We'll beat her at her game, together, you and me, okay?"
Catastrophe Pt 9 || @cxttynoir || Unlucky Wishes
Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Part 5 | Part 6 | Part 7 | Part 8 Mentioned: @sorcerymuses, @muralmxse, @wickedlyxcreepy
Gigi was just about to grant Toralei's written wish when she froze over Catty's next words. She turned back around and listened. No... no, Catty couldn't find out! Not like this!
Not while Toralei still had the pictures!
If the genie breathed air, she would be having a panic attack right now! Catty had no idea how much Gigi WANTED to rebel against the conniving striped cat, but how can she be fast enough before that photo would hit social media!
If that happened, Catty would NEVER be safe from the public again!
Tears began to stream down her face as she gripped Catty's hands tightly before confessing. If Catty was going to know than she had to know everything before Toralei found out!
❝ I'm so sorry, Catty. This is all my fault. I wish I could do more, but I cannot. I've tried to confront her but she has the photos of us during our carnival date. She was there that day and followed us. I cannot stop her so long as she has her phone. I don't know what we could do. She's in the crowd right now and I don't want her to overhear us. All I wanted to do was protect you... If anyone found out... ❞

thinking about how the most interesting online fandom space experience ive had in years was tokyo revengers on twitter......... we were all keeping up with the manga and posting new theories and thoughts every week and then suddenly wakui was like "ok the manga will be over in 6 more chapters" and we all said HUH and it ended SO TERRIBLY that the whole fandom just collapsed overnight. went from nonstop talk abt tokrev for months to an absolute ghost town. the majority of my tr mutuals straight up abandoned their accounts. the ending was literally so bad that everyone just dropped it and walked away and hasn't discussed it since. ive never seen anything like it
#shakes fist at sky... if wakui hasn't sold out tokrev could've gone so much further. he left SO MUCH unresolved....#and ''tied it up'' in the worst way possible that like was hypocritical to the message of the entire series#I'll die mad abt the ending but the absolute fandom catastrophe that followed is so haunting JFJEJXMEMSME tl was just dead silent

What actually happened to Jayce and Viktor in the end? And why didn’t Ekko’s Z-drive destroy everything within its blast radius?
TL;DR: the only timeline that could have worked was the one where Viktor gives Jayce the Acceleration rune, where Ekko invents the Z-drive, and where Jayce saves Viktor and gets his partner back.
Something we’ve seen pointed out is that the world rune that worked in this timeline was the Acceleration rune, which has the function of transportation through time and space.
Ekko’s Z-drive was built by inverting Jayce’s Acceleration rune (this is important later).
We know from his experiments that the limit for reversing time is only 4 seconds. Any further back and it causes catastrophic harm to his surroundings. It’s implied that the further he overextends his Z-drive, the more disastrous the damage and radius of effect.
In the final battle against Viktor, we see Ekko overextend his Z-drive far beyond 4 seconds. Then, he yeets it at Viktor, whose mask is shattered from the impact.
We know that turning back time beyond 4 seconds causes catastrophic destruction of the surrounding areas: Jayce and Viktor, and perhaps countless others should have been caught up in the blast. But instead, we see something different:
Time stands still for a moment, courtesy of the boy who shattered time.
Now things happen all in a manner of seconds: In the astral plane, we see Viktor comment on the anomaly that Ekko has created.
It’s something that Viktor as smart as he is, couldn’t have conceived— leave it to Ekko (and lest I forget, Heimerdinger and alt-Jinx) to show them all up.
This is debatable, but I firmly believe that Viktor with his awareness of all time and space, could have escaped or even survived the explosion.
It’s only Jayce, the only person who could show him what he showed him, that gets through to him in the end and convinces him to give up his Glorious Evolution.
"In all timelines, only you can show me this". Ekko is the catalyst but Jayce was the key.
Jayce returns the Acceleration rune to Viktor which kicks off a chain of events. The souls under Viktor’s control are freed from his grasp. Back in the real world, and back to the explosion, we see the following happening almost simultaneously:
The blast from the Z-drive extends from Viktor’s reach to Jayce’s
The Acceleration rune embedded in Jayce’s wrist starts to glow from being activated by Jayce and Viktor in the astral plane
Jayce and Viktor are absorbed into the gem and the gemstone blips out of existence
Recall that the Z-drive was created through an inversion of the Acceleration rune. To multiply something by its inverse, is to divide it by itself. The Acceleration rune multiplied by the Inversed Acceleration rune, cancels out the effect of the other: nullifying both the anomaly from the Z-drive but also the rune.
This explains why there was no larger explosion. Viktor and Jayce (who chose to stay) sacrificed themselves and took themselves out of the equation. Jayce and Viktor were the anomalies— just like the Z-drive should not have existed, neither should have Hextech.
Through all the timelines and permutations of runes that Viktor tried, the only combination that could have worked was in the timeline with the Acceleration rune. It couldn’t have worked if it was any other rune, if Ekko had never invented the Z-drive, or if Jayce had never convinced Viktor to give up his path of destruction, and got his partner back.
In short: Boy Savior saves the day; Love Wins

can you even imagine what a fucking horror show the early game is from spite's perspective, though. not only is this funky forcibly severed little slip of the fade having to deal with the reverse cosmic horror of physical reality as perceived by a spirit and being trapped in it against its will -- existentially confused and disoriented and hurting and nothing makes any kind of sense, at the mercy of human cruelty at its most deliberately sadistic. and then the one source of comfort and compassion and some kind of safety and clarity that lucanis surely must have been to him in the ossuary despite everything just goes and shuts himself in his room inside with a seemingly passive aggressive number of locks between them and no explanation and won't speak to him and they're STILL in the fucking ossuary. rook came and found them and they could be free now (rook is here!) and still lucanis keeps them in the ossuary even though he PROMISED he promised they'd get out of there together!!! what the fuck DO you think at that point? like did he trick me that whole time??? he wasn't like zara before, so why is he doing this to me now? why isn't he saying anything? 'he won't move. I can't reach him'. at least in the ossuary they had a deal, a goal, a hope -- each other. at least he wasn't entirely alone, before.
this poor poor poor little spite spirit really was ferried into the real world like 'hey welcome to reality! as your first introduction to it you're first getting horrifically tortured and then getting to vicariously experience one of THE most distressing and harrowing psychological conditions the human brain can cook up for itself (a fully fledged and deeply entrenched freeze response flaring up with catastrophic severity due to an unbroken ongoing and unlikely to let up any time soon chain of Unfortunately... Recent Events). I think spite is being extremely reasonable and patient about the whole thing, when you put it into perspective. I'm not saying let him eat the self-lighting candles or anything, but he's got some extremely valid points along the way lol. spite is not only child-like, the metaphor work going on is a lot more pleasingly flexible and complex than that, but he is also helplessly existentially dependent on lucanis in a way that, if anything, is a heightened version of the way a child (or child part) has to depend on a parent to navigate the world and survive.
tl;dr: we truly don't give enough sympathy to spite for having to live in the head of lucanis dellamorte. a place even lucanis dellamorte would prefer not to be. to be fair to him I think lucanis would be the first person to agree with this lol
#it's a lot like it would be if a spirit possessed me I suspect. like sorry you're in here too now I've tried to get out myself but no luck#possessor's remorse#spite very much did not have a choice in all of that he's just working with the hand he's been dealt here lol#dragon age#dragon age: the veilguard#dragon age: the veilguard spoilers#dragon age spoilers#spite#lucanis dellamorte#spite is such a little gremlin but looking at what's going on from his pov for even like a split second is so heartbreaking haha#one of my favourite parts of their relationship is that there clearly is affection of some sort on both sides even at the beginning#beneath the resentment and confusion and fear and mutual frustrations there is also real and enduring care#the fact that lucanis is genuinely kind and spite is genuinely loyal in his spirit-y way. I just. I need a moment.#the nice thing about playing a mourn watcher is that it's easy to imagine rook sort of glimpsing the outlines of some of this#and being quite understanding with spite even as they don't want to be invasive or step on lucanis' still-tender trauma toes about it#be nice to spite. like all of us he is Going Through it fr fr perhaps even more so. and he doesn't even get to have FIRE 😔#*grumbly spite voice* I hate this fucking family

Why the CDU/CSU can go fuck itself
Time for another one of these. a quick(ish) summary for all the non-german speakers about why we're freaking out and the state of our democracy.
Spoiler. its not...good. Not catastrophic (yet). But the alarm bells are very, very loud.
Tl;dr: The CDU, party currently prognosed to win the election, has basically worked together with the afd to get a migrationbill to pass that is very strict. The afd are the nazi party that is getting backed by Musk. This might forshadow a cooperation between AFD and CDU. That would put the far right in power. The current response from the general public are demonstrations against that. Like. there are a LOT of protests currently.
Alright grab a drink and lets go.
First, groundwork: Who are parties and who is the guy we currently all want to punch in the face?
on top: Careful, risk of confusion. on the left: on the board of a sleazy cooperation. not interested in the enviroment. Real. On the right: on the board of a sleazy cooperation. not interested in the enviroment. comic figure.
This guy here is Friedrich Merz. no, not the guy on the right. the guy on the left. I know. Easy mistake to make.
He's an asshole. He's also the current boss of the CDU and their chancellor candidate. He's very likely to win according to recent polls.
The CDU has a complicated history, but to simplify it: They were in charge for sixteen years before the now broken apart Traffic-light goverment and are responsible for a lot of shit that we're currently dealing with. Like crumbling infrastructure for example. They were more interested, as a party, to preserve the status quo at all costs, than to invest anything. You could argue that a lot of the enviromental issues we are facing and the reason why Germany is currently pretty stagnant, can be traced back to the one and a half decade the CDU was in charge. They are conservative, not a fan of migration and like to throw around 'tradtional values'.
They are, generally speaking, or better were, center right. More on that later.
The other party that is going to be a major pain in the ass to outright fucking dangerous, is the AFD, short for 'Alternative for Germany'.

this is Alice Weidel, she's the current chancellor candidate for the afd. here is her wikipedia article and lets just say her 'controversies' part is longer than her 'political positions' part.
Those are the, to put it bluntly, Nazis. They are dangerous but also a fucking mess. Like, to just list a few of their hits: They've been getting money from dictators (different ones btw, not just one), infigthing is a sport to them, they try to glorify the nazi-regime, the german intelligence agency is watching them because they are officially considered radical right-wing and a threat to democracy, there is a petition to ban the afd and that is a high bar to cross, the demonize immigrants, hate queer people, you know, the usual. Also of course political correctness has gone too far and climate change isn't real and we need to leave the EU. Elon Musk, you know the rich guy who did the Nazi-salute, also has been appearing and is actively supporting them. Just in case we were unclear before on where they all stand.
(btw the whole 'elon is supporting them' thing is pretty scary bc you could argue the reason that the afd is able to win so many votes is bc, frankly, they're good at social media. Do i need to elaborate why that is a dangerous combination.)
to put them into perspective: The afd is too right for the other alt-right parties in the EU parlament. There is a coalition in the EU Parlament for the right, made up of all the right wing parties from other nations and the afd is too right for them. So. yeeeeaaah.
that should do it as background information.
Now. back to current events. where both of these parties are getting more and more support.
For a short history of why we currently have a non-functioning goverment, i made a post about that. Be aware that it was made as a product of its time and doesn't have all the information. For example back then we didn't know that FDP had actively engineered that break up and wanted it to happen for a while. Yes. They wanted to topple the goverment they were in. on purpose. It's been a fun time over here in Germany as well.
anyways, lets get to the meat of things. Since we don't have a functional goverment currently, Merz has introduced a harsh migration bill. This has been in the wake of an attack with two murders, where the current suspect is a migrant. while this is a tragedy, its getting brutally misused by all out rightwing parties to scream about how we need stricter migration laws and that migrants are a danger. Which to be so fucking clear about this, is such bullshit. It's been proven so many times how that is bullshit. I'm gonna be real and not even bother. They're just the newest scapegoats everything can be blamed on.
But because nobody has a majority, all attempts at governing so far have been pretty stalled.
(our goverment currently)
Quick information from the past:
in 2018 the CDU basically stated they wouldn't, in any sort of way, cooperate with the AFD, declaring basically a Brandmauer (fire wall). This basically means that yes, the afd had been given seats in the parlament, but nobody would give them any power whatsoever.
This has been the position of the cdu. It is why people still considered them center-right.
Merz has repeatedly said he didn't care who voted with him. now with a slight majority, 348 to 344, the cdu has won, with the support of the afd. Many see this as the fall of the Brandmauer. It's not good. Merz has more and more talking points that sound exactly like the afd and that is SCARY. There is still a vivid memory alive here about why having a far-right goverment is dangerous. There is a reason why there are currently a lot of massive protests all over the country loudly proclaiming that 'never again is now'.
This also puts for many the cdu from 'center right' to 'right'. There are calls from inside the cdu to 'stop demonizing the afd'. This is scary. This could mean that we get not just a conservative goverment in a few weeks, but a rightwing one. One who is comfortable cooperating with radical right wingers if it suits their needs. To cooperate with a party that even our own intelligence agencies consider a threat to our democrazy.
So. that is why your german mutuals sit there like

Now. To another part. What exactly is that migration bill merz had wanted to pass so desperateldy?
Well first of all it calls for a national emergency, using the beforementioned murder as reasoning, for the danger of immigration. It calls for closing and controls at the borders permanently, not temporary as is curently the case. They want for people without valid ID to be refused entry, even when they are searching safety. People that are already in Germany but need to leave should be thrown in jail until they actually leave.
Which. just to be clear about this. this what the bill they had, that had the support of the afd, says. This is not a wish list. This what they want to be law.
But to be also clear, lots of this is against our current law, against Basic EU law and principle and also a pretty big violation of our constituation.
Which is what makes this situation so fatal. This bill is going to be fought. In court, in politics, with demonstrations on the streets. this bill is controversial. Merz knew that. he knew that a lot of this wouldn't pass. This is a publicly stunt. This is testing the waters. How much will the public allow? how far can he push? Is cooperation with the afd possible for him? How does everyone react?
It was never about immigration or that bill. All the people this is going to impact, all the lives that are going to be lost because of this shit they are pulling - this is to them all just collateral. Its testing how much is possible, tolerated even. The chances of this bill making it law is slim. It needs to pass again in a different body of the goverment with a two thirds majority and that is nowhere in sight.
Also, lets take a look at who voted what:
it was about four votes. So my german friends who also read this - look at this and be aware of who voted what. Who abstained to vote and gave up the four votes it would have taken to stop this. who accepted that to get what they want they would need to get the support of the afd, no matter how much Merz now claims that he still doesn't cooperate with the afd and that there were no talks between them. Look at the numbers. Look how and with who they voted.
To be frank, i am pretty pissed off. I don't think much about wallowing in self-pity and despair. i am pissed off about what is happening. i am pissed off that these people don't have a spine, i am pissed off at the FDP for enabling this in the first place, i am pissed off that we have Nazis in out goverment, i am pissed off that we have people who are willing to cooperate with them. I am pissed off that i need to settle for damage control instead of being able to see something finally move forward.
Now here we come to the less depressing part of this whole thing. And i want you to pay attention to it.
People are protesting. loudly. And in the thousands. There have been ten to a hundred thousands of people all over the country in the last week, protesting against the rise of faschism and the far right. Its all over the country, in different cities. Where the afd appears to talk, so do the protesters. There are 35 afd people to 1300 protesters. People loudly say 'never again is now'. And they show up to back that claim up.
This shit is vile, yes, but it's not going to be unopposed.
I know this all reads as depressing as fuck but do not give into the temptation of falling into despair. This is far from over. Yes those are the alarm bells and they are ringing loudly. But there is still things that can be done. Don't let the afd lure you into thinking this all pointless anyways. It's not. This is all not good, yes, but no reason to fall into blind panic. The bill isn't law yet. Merz is facing massive backlash for his little stunt. This is not a hopeless situation. It's just a shitty one.
#gonna admit at this point i am writing this out for myself to wrap my head around#easier when i am explaining it to other people#german politics#friedrich merz#cdu#fck cdu#fck afd#alice weidel#german stuff#fuck elon#elon musk#merz#its like. two in the morning. i have work tmw. i need to go to bed so badly#germany#maybe tmw ill do a better break down of all the laws this shit is breaking#but i am simply too tired to do that today lol#merz can be lucky if i never meet him#he has a very punchable face is all i am saying#i hope this explains some of the things i post lol

You and me both, king. Some things never change.
The Power Stance is probably my favourite stock pose in the comic. This isn't quite as hilarious as when Rose does it, but it's still kind of killing me.
Mr. Crocker is locked the fuck in. Eyes forward. Center of gravity lowered. He might not know what the hell's going on, but god damn, he is going to be ready for it.
Oh, god! I thought this was just another atmosphere flash!
Jane! Jane, come back! You were just supposed to tell me that it's going to be a long day!
Booby-trapped mail, eh? PM would be livid.
First of all, despite what Roxy thinks, I really don't believe that this was the Condesce.
Jane's in her custody. She's been at the mercy of this woman for her entire life, and if the Condesce wanted her dead, she'd be dead. Besides, the Condesce is fully aware that killing a Player at this juncture would doom the timeline, and she's not stupid enough to risk such a catastrophe just to intimidate Jane.
No, I still think these attempts reek of someone who has no idea what they're doing. If a Player is destined for the Medium, no one who actually understands Paradox Space would risk killing them on Earth - ergo, Jane's being menaced by someone who doesn't understand Paradox Space. An amateur.
I still have no idea who, though. The only unknown quantity here is UU - who, while certainly untrustworthy, does seem to understand Sburblore. I don't think it's her.
tl;dr: I predict that the 'mastermind' behind these assassination attempts is someone we've never seen before - and they have absolutely no idea what they're messing with.
END OF ACT 6 ACT 1.
(Also, for the record: Jane obviously survived this explosion. John survived a similar explosion at the end of his first Act - and besides, Jane's a Life Player. She's fine.)
#homestuck liveblog#full liveblog#act 6#4279#s191#also also: holy hell. act 6 is really bifurcating *this* early?

Love and Deepspace Timeline: MC, Philos, and the Aether Core

Look I finished Xav's myths card. I don't regret waiting until I was done with it to post his timeline because the last two nodes have more to do with MC than him, but I am in a state so we are making this to cope.
This is all speculation and should not be taken as fact, I have done two other posts, one on Zayne and one on Xavier and I will not be doing one on Rafayel please see this reddit post by u/joonmin for relevant information about his myths card blah blah blah.
This post is less of a timeline and more here to answer questions you very likely have if you: A) decided to browse reddit and saw people saying Xavier feels like the "cannon ro" [this is a gacha game there isn't one] but have never read any of his memories, moments, or dates B) read chapter 8 and went "none of this makes sense I feel like I am missing something" or C) just generally are confused about L&D's world building and what's up with MC. I have answers for you. Wibbly wobbly soupy answers. This post also has a TL;DR in case you don't want to see me break out the string board and just want the relevant bits of information about MC you won't get from the msq.
SPOILERS FOR ALL IN GAME CONTENT UP TO CHAPTER 8, VARIOUS MOMENTS, AND ANECDOTES RELATED TO ALL 3 ROS, PROCEED WITH CARE.
Current Timeline MC (i.e. The one we are playing as)
The game starts with MC's graduation from the Academy and first day as a fully licensed hunter. We learn a few things in this first chapter, namely that MC is combat trained, has a rare heart condition known as Protocore Syndrome that has no known cure, and that her decision to become a hunter has something to do with what she experienced fourteen years ago during the Catastrophe when the Deepspace Tunnel opened and Wanderers started invading earth.
Specifically MC describes something burrowing itself into her heart. She feels helpless, like prey, and has a strong desire to never feel anything like this again. Which is unfortunate because I have a feeling a lot of someones are going to be on her trail sooner rather than later.
In Chapter 5 it is revealed that MC has an Aether core fused to her heart. This sort of human experimentation is highly illegal and it is unknown who did this to MC other than our beloved Grandmother was directly involved. Grandma appears to have taken MC away from wherever this happened after the tests started to threaten MC's life.
This is known to Dr. Zayne and Dr. Noah, though neither seem to know more than what Grandma told them. Neither of them seem to fully understand what an Aether core is or what it is doing to MC's heart. Zayne in particular seems to find this extremely concerning.
Uncovering the mystery of the Aether core seems to be what will be driving the first arc so we will not be discussing it at length here. I do want to note that Xavier absolutely knows what it is, while Zayne does not but does seem to know more of the technical aspects of how it is effecting MC, and Rafayel is at least aware of it being valuable and maybe why exactly the people in the N109 Zone want it.
At some point in the past MC met and made a promise to Rafayel. It is my personal theory that this likely took place on Hat Island during the field trip MC talks about due to some of the comments made in Chapter 7.
MC and Caleb were friends with Zayne in childhood. MC's exact age is a bit fuzzy, but the game does seem to suggest she is younger than Zayne. She does not know why Zayne disappeared from her life or what led him to become a doctor.
Comments in Chapter 4 suggests that Caleb encouraged MC to become a hunter. He seems to be very supportive of her, but Grandma seems more interested in trusting MC's protection to Zayne.
On the surface MC seems pretty normal. Her memories from before the Catastrophe seem to be gone, if she had a mother and father or other blood relatives, she doesn't remember them anymore.
Philos MC (i.e. What is Going on in the Myths)
It is revealed in Xavier's When Shooting Stars Fall anecdote that Philos is Earth in the distant future. This has confused numerous people in the notes of my Xav's timeline so I am going to be insufferable and attempt to assist with a graph:
The MC you play belongs to the game timeline, the MCs (plural each myths card features a different one) in the Myths cards come from the Philos timeline. I have tagged the Game timeline as a "potential tangent" as the events that take place in game are entirely reliant on the existence of the Deepspace Tunnel, which is created in the Philos timeline.
At some point in the Original/Philos Timeline, Earth's core ceases to function. Humanity replaces it with a new, artificial core that causes noticeable weather changes and fuses all of the tectonic plates together, and begins a new calendar counting forward from the years since Earth ceased to be and Philos was born. As a result, we don't know what exact year Earth's core giving out happened in the Original Timeline. The artificial core allows almost all humans to "live eternal." They seem to be like Tolkien's elves in the sense they can live for an eternity but they start to get tired after a while and give up on life. This is why there is a royal family that needs a line of succession. Xavier is the Crown Prince of Philos, he meets MC in school and learns she has a rare disease called Protocore Syndrome which will not allow her to live forever. He attempts to cure this by finding a specific protocore she mentions, but fails to reach her in time and is forced to watch her die. This all happens in the year 214.
At some point MC is reborn and assigned to the same teacher as Xavier. She is to train to become his knight and serve as the leader of the Lightseekers, an order tasked with killing Wanderers. At some point during or before Xavier's coming of age ceremony, he learns the truth about Philos: the planet is dying due to the artificial core never having been meant to sustain the planet this long. The Royal Family's solution for this is to occasionally feed humans to the heart of Philos in Starfall Forest. When they do this, it creates Wanderers. As if that wasn't bad enough, Xavier learns that his father and the royal family have found what they think could be a permanent solution: there is a girl who has achieved true immortality. She is the only person on Philos who can die and be reborn constantly, and while they don't seem to know why she does this, the royal family believes this girl is the life force of the planet itself.
This girl is MC and Xavier does not want this to happen. He has a plan that he does not explain to MC, but it involves traveling back in time. He says they have specific places in time picked out, but we know from Xavier's Passing By anecdote that something went wrong with his team's attempt at time travel and now there is no guarantee that the MC he left on Philos as its Queen is still there.
So now we have two timelines: Original/Philos Timeline and Game/Tangent Timeline. But all of that is just taking Xavier's anecdotes and Myths card into account... so what happens if we try to plug in the other two ROs?
Rafayel
In u/Joonmin's reddit post they mention two very important bits of information: 1) It has been 30,000 years since the sea dried up and 2) MC is a member of the royal family of Philos, not by birth but because "she has a heart that’s been blessed by the gods" and has "awoken from the depths." If all three myths cards take place in the same Philos timeline as the one Xavier leaves, we can reasonably place Raf's myths card after Xavier's backtrack mission.
So the Philos timeline would look like this. I have a note for Zayne's card there as well, but if I had to get picky with it I'm slightly tempted to place his Myths card between MC's first death and her being reborn to meet Xavier again. The other explanation would be that there are three separate Philos timelines created because the MC was successfully scarified to the Heart of Philos. In Xavier's Myths 6 MC briefly takes a dip in the space time anomaly at the center of Starfall Forest which could also explain MC scattering across different timelines, but the in game spacepedia makes a point to say that there is a chance that life still exists on Philos:
So it could simply be that MC over there has been stuck in the exact cycle of death and rebirth that Xavier was trying to prevent. It could also mean that when they add that mystery fourth love interest there is an explanation for a fourth possible myths card. Anyway all this information leaves us with a set of timelines that currently look like this:
This still leaves a lot of unanswered questions. For example, if the Philos timeline is where this all starts, what version of it is? What caused Earth's core to give out in that original timeline? Is Rafayel and Lumeria's existence the consequences of clashing timelines or are mermaids cannon to this universe? What effect on the space time continuum did Xavier's actions have? And how much of this is actually going to be answered in game?
TL;DR
Philos is Earth in the future with an artificial core that started running out of power, and never should have been made in the first place.
The royal family fed some of their long lived humans to the anomaly in Starfall forest to keep the planet running, but then they found out about a girl who could constantly be reborn each time she died and had an idea.
An idea Xavier wasn't very keen on but who cares. They thought that "when the time was right" they would sacrifice her to the rift and leave her there to die and be reborn forever. They also did not think to ask her.
Oh yeah when they fed people to the rift they turned into Wanderers. So wanderers = people as mentioned in Zayne's Still in the Dark anecdote.
Whatever makes MC reincarnate might have something to do with Lumeria, or at the very least the Lumerians in Rafayel's myths card seem to think it does.
In game MC, current timeline MC knows none of this, and has no memories from her lives, past or future. This is consistent across all her incarnations.
Final Thoughts
The only reason why I think this way about timelines is because I watched Donnie Darko in a college theater class. People like to argue about that movie and how it is supposed to be interpreted, but generally speaking they all seem to think that Tangent Timelines and the Tangent Universes they spawn get deleted very quickly, so maybe that's why the game starts by talking about "being able to leave this loop" and why Xavier seems to think something bad will be happening to Linkon City soon.
Chapter 8 ends with Xavier attempting to send a message back through the Deepspace Tunnel to make contact with someone. Interestingly enough he calls this "Traceback II." This sounded familiar to me and sure enough the game starts by mentioning that exact same thing, it is going past a black hole and is what says that line "we are stuck in this loop."
I thought in previous posts that the Aether Core is what could cure MC... but now I think the Aether Core is likely what Philos's artificial core is called... so who created it in the first place? 「(゚ペ)
The Deepspace Tunnel is a spacetime anomaly likely caused by Philos's existence since it was "never meant to exist." So why was it created? And by who?

I think Cartman hates jewish people and -Kyle- too much to be vulnerable like you've depicted. No matter what level of physical attraction he might feel.
Hi there, thanks for your comment. Unfortunately I wrote a whole-ass novel in response so here's the TL;DR so you don't actually have to read all that: I agree that the comic is OOC but I don't think it's because of Cartman's hatred of Kyle or Jewish people.
Sorry for misusing your message to go on a somewhat loosely related rant but I've been meaning to write this for a while and it came as a convenient excuse lmao _
I agree with you regarding the vulnerability. I don't think Cartman would voice his feelings like that unless (he could claim that) it's a farce (e.g., Jenny Simons, "Cartman Finds Love") or the other person shows interest in him first so he feels safe from rejection (Heidi, initially - not opening that whole can of worms rn lol). For example, he treated his attraction to Patty Nelson as a big secret, apparently not even considering ever confessing to her, and that's most likely because he was expecting the reaction she did end up giving him since, beneath his self-deceit, he's excruciatingly aware of the fact that he's actually not exactly highly regarded by his peers.
It's a lot of work upholding the façade he's build for himself of being this cool, esteemed person and it cracks easily even without direct outside influence (for example when Clyde Frog or Cupid Me insult him) so he really, really doesn't deal with rejection very well. Him being this vulnerable to Kyle specifically and then getting rejected would be absolutely catastrophic for him, so I agree that he wouldn't put himself in that position. However, it's my opinion that the most OOC thing about the comic is the fact that he simply acknowledges that Kyle hates him. I don't actually think he'd just accept that but would instead convince himself that it isn't true ("Kyle has internalized homophobia" or better yet "Kyle doesn't think he's worthy of someone as cool and awesome as me") and then do some crazy shit to try and win him over.
So yeah, you're right: He Would Not Fucking Say That. I don't think his hatred of Kyle and/or Jewish people is the reason he wouldn't, though, as I believe Cartman's feelings towards Kyle and Judaism are a lot more complicated than that. It's not without reason that his relationships with both are such a big part of the show and that people smarter than me have written whole essays on the topic lmao
I feel the need to clarify that I am in no way trying to excuse any of Cartman's antisemitism! I'd just like to voice a few thoughts on its origin and evolution.
Cartman is clearly weirdly obsessed with both Kyle and his religion and obviously they are linked. While I suppose initially it might have been a bit of a chicken-egg situation ("He hates Kyle because he hates Jews" vs. "He hates Jews because he hates Kyle"), I believe originally his antisemitism may have simply been a byproduct of his fascination with the third reich, which itself I think was mostly a result of his enjoyment of envisioning himself as a dictator (i.e. the ultimate authority figure) and as such was actually pretty surface-level - as is evident from the fact that for a long time he didn't seem to fully grasp what exactly Judaism even IS (as shown when he apologizes to Kyle for calling him a Jew or when he uses the term as an insult towards Stan and Kenny). Still, I very much dislike it when people try to downplay his bigotry as naivety. That really doesn't hold any water after very early on in the show, if it ever even did in the first place, since he definitely acts from a place of malice and over time his fixation on the religion seems to have developed into something bigger. He's learnt more about it and it became much more synonymous with Kyle for him (the order of which is also debatable but I of course lean a certain way). At this point in the show I believe it's safe to say that he wouldn't be nearly as obsessed with Judaism if Kyle wasn't Jewish. While Cartman is obviously a bigoted asshole in many ways, he's not nearly as preoccupied with other minority groups as he is with Jews and he has even shown himself to be surprisingly tolerant of homosexuals and disabled people (who, of course, were also heavily persecuted under Nazism).
I really do think that "Jewpacabra" did leave a lasting impact on his character. It's pretty obvious that he was being genuine at the end of of the episode and actually did intent on self-identifying as Jewish from then on (and iirc M&T confirmed as much in the commentary to that episode and explained that they just sort of… forgot about that lol) and then in "Shots" he does claim to be Jewish and while that may have been in an attempt to get a vaccination exemption, the aforementioned commentary makes me believe it may not exclusively be that.
Notably, he specifically calls himself an "Orthodox Jew", which Kyle obviously doesn't seem to be and that ties in nicely with him becoming a rabbi in PC and making the religion his entire personality - because it's not enough to become Jewish: He needs to beat Kyle at being Jewish.
Of course, Cartman never actually stops being antisemitic before the time skip but then "Cupid Ye" implies that that isn't even a fully conscious decision that he can completely control but instead at least partially caused by whatever he has going on mentally. He even actively attempts to counteract it when he decides that it has gone too far. That's my take on the episode, at least. Obviously the whole thing with Cupid Me is kind of messy. No matter what exactly is actually happening there, I do think the his actions here prove that his feelings regarding the matter are more complex than they may initially appear to be.
Though I know it's still a point of contention for many, to me personally it seems pretty clear that him being a rabbi and a family man in PC was authentic and that he wasn't simply messing with Kyle the entire time. However, I find it extremely interesting that Cartman converted BEFORE meeting Yentl so I actually don't see any way in which Kyle didn't have any part in that and as such I don't think he would have ever become a rabbi if Kyle didn't happen to be Jewish. So my personal headcanon is that while Cartman's conversion was indeed directly influenced by Kyle, he actually did end up finding fulfillment in the faith and it ironically helped him let go of his obsession with him (which I think fits the show's style of humor).
To summarize: As a shipper I may be biased but I think that Cartman is a disturbed little boy who grows up to be a disturbed little man who fails to fully understand his feelings towards Kyle and - as an extension of that - the Jewish faith and thus lashes out into extremes regarding it.
#south park#south park meta#sp meta#sp cartman#eric cartman#cw antisemitism#kyman#sp kyman#my thoughts on yaoi#of course the ACTUAL explanation for Cartman's paradoxical stance on Judaism is that it's whatever is funniest at any given moment#but that doesn't make for very interesting meta...#my own stuff

Your opinion? https://www.tumblr.com/dranosh-haran-of-paleoworld/766237407554273280/why-do-you-hate-itachi-so-much?source=share
Had to use a different browser because this pleasant person has me blocked lol anyway.
TL;DR: Itachi had no right to do the things he did, but he also had no choice. Even if adult onlookers could come up with choices, he was a child trapped in a mindset his authority figures hammered into him in his formative years, and then he was put under additional duress. Come the fuck on.
"This guy willingly betrayed his own people and family, selling them out to the government who wanted to destroy them all."
"Willingly" when talking about a 11-12-year-old brainwashed, groomed, traumatized child under duress is kinda wild. Yes, Naruto is all about normalizing child soldiers, but there's a line and that's Itachi having his horrible "milestones" at an age where others are still in school.
And it's not treason to report a conspiracy to commit, well, treason.
More after the break. Enjoy this screencap of a literal child and one of the many adults who chose to fail him.
Itachi was 11 when he joined the ANBU, 12 when he killed the clan. His incompetent piece of shit father dragged him into a "kill or be killed" situation at 4, and he already had the muscle memory of slitting throats ON REFLEX?? What the everloving fuck did Fugaku do to his toddler? He was encouraged to leave school and enter the field for more death and horror at 8. All for the alleged greater good that was peddled to children and adults more aggressively than America's magical sky cloth. Fugaku and Danzo played a grooming tug-o-war with a literal prepub child and actively, deliberately, had him believe the weight of the world rested on his 3 inch shoulders. The fuck did anyone think was gonna happen when Itachi joined the ANBU everyone encouraged him to join, and did the work he was taught to admire - BY Fugaku, by the way. Fugaku wanted a peacemaker, then tried to start a war. Hm.
Also, Itachi didn't "sell out" his clan. If I know a family member is about to start something with predictably catastrophic ramifications, like, you know, a glorified terrorist invasion ("coup"), I have a moral obligation to report that. "Family" does not matter. Blood, water, starting a war is something you deserve to have sabotaged. And if you're willing to kill, you better be ready to be killed. Everyone who cheered for the coup willingly risked death and willingly doomed their families. "Bloodless revolution" my ass, that is delusional. As if Konoha is just gonna accept Fugaku after a COUP!? Fucking TREASON!? Oppressed or not, you sow violence, you reap violence, and public perception matters. The public's perception of the Uchiha coup would probably be *checks notes* treason :)
"His own people"? They all treated him like a trophy and an attack dog when they didn't outright abuse him for speaking his mind, when he was clearly old enough to let them exploit him. All they had for him was demands to make them proud and bring them glory, at the cost of his well-being. Chapter by chapter in Itachi Shinden, you can watch him wither and crumble. When Itachi's comrade was killed when he was 8, Fugaku literally said "He'll get over it" while his boy was falling apart in the next room. Those are not "his own people", they're one big, bubbling cunt stew with very few exceptions, judging by the novel.
Whether the government wanted to destroy the Uchiha clan or whether it was racist or oppressive ultimately doesn't matter when the active threat to world peace and countless lives is coming from the other side. Two things can be true at the same time, so yeah Konoha sucked, but also yeah, the Uchiha posed a threat. The clan's lives weren't in danger when they decided to endanger everyone over discrimination that isn't even as egregious as what fat people on airplanes have to deal with. Defunding the police (LMAO), not letting a latent traitor run for president, surveillance, and a dedicated, OPEN compound none of the other clans who got one bitched about. Wow, what a compelling reason to set the world on fire!
Yes, Konoha failed the clan, yes, Konoha is scum for that. But two wrongs don't make a right. I'm tired of this whole nonsense of "they're oppressed so they're allowed to act like total barbarians and be the next oppressor". I'm tired on a personal level which you can probably guess.
This is not a responsible adult:
"He knew about Obito and that he was behind the 9-Tails attack but said nothing to anyone. He discriminated against his own people and slaughtered them all to the last child."
He should definitely have reported Obito. But calling his actions against the clan discrimination is like saying the German police discriminates against that Berlin-based crime family because it happens to be a BIPOC minority. THEY ALSO HAPPEN TO BE THE FUCKING MOB. Of course, most Uchihas probably weren't active combatants and didn't deserve to die, but as horrible as it is, strategically, Danzo had a point when he said there could be no potential avengers.
Plus, outsiders like to focus on numbers as if more dead people means more suffering, but this isn't true. Just because 99 people suffer and die with me, doesn't mean each of us suffers and dies 100-fold. Sasuke was based when he said Itachi should have killed him, too. Outsiders don't want to accept this because it IS horrible, but sparing a young child after killing his whole family, is not kind. What would've awaited any children Itachi spared? The village that ordered their parents' slaughter? A world that clearly doesn't want them and will come after them at the first chance? Yeah sounds ever so fucking merciful. Just because unaffected gawkers think preserving a unique cultural or genetic group is the most important thing, doesn't mean the people actually affected have such priorities when literally staring death or a life of pain in the face.
"He cast Tsukuyomi on his own parents and brutally murdered them, tortured his own little brother beyond imagine with one torture session putting Sasuke in a fucking coma, one he would've never gotten out of if it wasn't for that bitch Tsunade and that's the only good Tsunade did in the series."
When did he cast Tsukuyomi on his parents? And "brutally", well, they surrendered and he cut them down rather quickly. All murders are brutal. Should he have raided the local vet and injected them with anaesthetics first? He was a 12-year-old child, crying, shaking, probably exhausted and barely coherent after having killed all the others, and looking at his final victims, his parents, comforting him. Striking them down quickly was the best for everyone involved at that point, anything more elaborate, "more gentle", would have prolonged this horror. Also what did Tsunade do wrong, and if Itachi hadn't knocked Sasuke out for a while, he would have gotten himself killed. The Tsukuyomi was overkill, 100%.

"Itachi thought he was wiser and more noble than his own people, which was pure and utter arrogance. When brought back as an edo, he said that a 7-year-old Sasuke could've changed the clan. He called himself Itachi Uchiha of Konoha and that he specifically had no regrets he was a massive piece of shit in life and death."
This is called interpretation. Yes, he was an arrogant child, he admitted this, Shisui told him, adults told him. But being an ass at the dawn of puberty doesn't invalidate the fact that he WAS smarter than most and the Uchiha uprising WAS a problem, and the clan was infinitely more arrogant than him for thinking they could just take power and that's the end of it. They were delusional. Being 11 when pointing this out doesn't mean he's wrong.

Vilifying him for calling himself "Itachi Uchiha of Konoha" is silly. Many nations will do horrible things behind the scenes to keep the peace, and just because Sasuke and Itachi were the tragic and ever so pretty victims of this, doesn't make Konoha worse than others. It is a place people actually live in. A place people call home and have a right to call home and feel safe and thrive in. Itachi did what he was forced to do by both sides, to protect people's home and peace, not to get headpats from Danzo and Hiruzen.
He also never said he didn't regret the massacre. The fact that he said he wished he would have confided in Sasuke, the fact of him telling Naruto, Sasuke, and Kabuto that he was wrong to try and solve everything on his own, all suggest he wishes it had been different. His words when he dissolves are "Mou miren ha nai", which can be interpreted as regretting nothing, but this is usually meant in a sense of unfinished business. Itachi could not un-kill the clan. Danzo was dead. What more could he do that he could still have "miren" about? Personally, I think he shouldn't have undone the whole Edo Tensei because he kinda owed Sasuke to stick around and fight the other Edo Tenseis manually, but that's not the point.
Actual footage of Itachi alone with his thoughts, probably:
"None of his plans make any kind of fucking sense. He wanted to save Konoha from war even though the other villages wouldn't have attacked for their own reasons."
Kindly look at Syria, Sudan, or Yemen, because the civil war the Uchiha were sure to start, would have been bad enough, you absolute pinecone. But I agree, Itachi's plans were mostly shit, but who taught him any kind of life skills or coping mechanisms? He wasn't parented, he wasn't guided, he was a trained attack dog. He never grew up mentally because when you're not allowed to feel like a child, know what being a child is, how are you gonna know when you're supposed to be all grown up and smart? He treated his suicide by Sasuke like a playdate. He toyed with him. He was a typical old soul, trauma and paralysis masquerading as maturity and composure. It's very apparent in the novels how helpless and small he felt. When the FUCK did he get a chance to unlearn his helplessness on one hand, and the world resting on his shoulders on the other? Itachi was deranged, but not by his own doing. A 4 to 12-year-old child is not responsible for their poor life "choices".
"So Itachi saved Konoha from zero potential wars, especially when none of the other villages attacked after Obito's, Orochimaru's, and Pain's assaults in the series."
I wasn't aware Itachi's Sharingan could accurately predict the future. He stopped the civil war that was certain to happen and that he could stop. Not a single ninja has ever been expected to fix the whole world and the few who expected it of themselves were even more deranged than Itachi. Why hold a 12-year-old to a higher standard just because he's foolish enough to do so himself? Right until Shisui died, Itachi clung to his naive dream of becoming the greatest ninja to stop all wars. And then, both Fugaku and Danzo demanded he be that, when Shisui's death just had him realize how helpless he is. And then, there was a war looming on the horizon that he COULD prevent.
"He practically sent Sasuke gift wrapped to Orochimaru or Danzo. He knew about Obito and Pain's plans and yet did nothing about them, which just screwed over Konoha immensely."
Yeah he fucked up with Orochimaru, and this was one of the things he could have predicted after Orochimaru tried it with him. Not killing Orochimaru when he had both cause and opportunity, was bafflingly stupid and I'll chalk it up to plot armour since Itachi will kill his own mother to protect Sasuke.
He was also a useless spy in Akatsuki, yes. He aided and abetted in several Kage and Jinchuuriki assassinations, all to keep a cover of questionable use.
We do have to grant him that he needed to stay alive to give Sasuke deserved closure. He didn't even know Obito wasn't Madara, so I don't expect him to have known much about Pain's abilities. Given he allegedly ties with Jiraiya and we all know what Pain did to him, Sasuke would not have gotten his revenge. As for Danzo, can we not underestimate him please? He had to be worn down into self-destruction by Sasuke, and when Itachi attacked him in the novel after getting the MS, he was immediately stopped.

"He was never a prodigy or anything, unlike Sasuke. His fights are just him using genjutsu on his opponents and overpowering them with it, which just childish and stupid. He pulled Susanoo, Mirror Yata, and the Tsoka Blade out of his ass."
I agree Susano'o and its rigs were asspull done to compete with DBZ ratings, but how was he not a prodigy when he was recommended for graduation at 8? Poor writing or not, the canon fact is that Itachi was way ahead of his peers and many adults. We can't blame a character's personality in one moment, then bad writing the next. All writing boils down to creating the character's reality and all facts written by the author are equally valid.
Calling genjutsu childish and stupid is silly as you can apply this to all jutsu. Naruto's army of clones is arguably more ridiculous than mastering an otherwise underdiscussed technique at a level that has people like Kakashi scared. Personally, I think the big noisy techniques like Kisame's water jutsus and Hashirama's Slaparama are a lot more childish and geared towards hollering little boys. Itachi's fighting style is elegant and super duper gay.

"This fucker is all over the place and doesn't make sense. Dushman-e-jaan has posts that go into greater detail about how this guy doesn't make sense, and I recommend you read them as she does an infinitely better job at explaining my dislike for Itachi than I have."
Dushman explicitly supports this:

But thinks Konoha is worse for allegedly being this:
In other words, Doucheman is fine with making 0 sense whatsoever as long as they can virtue-signal for fascists if they know how to sell the underdog act.

Omg hi
ok I rewatched the batman tonight and I had to rush to your ask box to say wtf is the time frame between eddie leaving the funeral and then calling the da/batman?! Cuz he must’ve fucking zoomed home for that
anyway great movie and your art was my inspiration to rewatch it! keep at it glitch you’re a real one
ready for me to put way too much thought into this
HELLOOOO yes I always loved that, we see him skitter away right when Bruce looks up for the second time, so that's when we start his timer to roughly figure out how long it took him to get back!
Based on the level of flooding outside City Hall we see during the montage of Gotham at the end of the movie, we can assume it's more inland than Riddler's hideout/apartment because it's not completely destroyed, just flooded outside up to the staircase, but it's not as far inland as the wealthier neighborhoods which were shown not to really be flooded at all. Bruce is shown to have taken at LEAST a few hours to get to the Mayor's apartment at the beginning of the movie from a similar location near the shoreline as he's saving the guy from the train, because the sun is starting to come up while he's investigating the crime scene with Gordon. Since we can assume the mayor likely lived in the wealthier parts of Gotham that were so far inland they didn't get impacted by the flooding, it's safe to say City Hall isn't as far from the shoreline/Riddler's apartment as that! If I had to guess, it's a 45 minute distance.
Flooding, in some of its worse instances, can reach 25 miles inland and 25 miles takes about 45 minute to travel. Now if I'm presuming City Hall is roughly 45 minutes away, wouldn't that mean the water level would basically be at the street-level, not nearly touching the tops of street lamps? YES but THIS was a much more severe flooding than normal. This was a SEAWALL being intentionally compromised in a near instant, which could potentially DOUBLE the rate the flood travels inland. Lets just make that a flat 50 miles inland. At its widest point, New York City (JUST New York City, not New York State) is 35 miles, so a flood reaching 50 miles inland is appropriately catastrophic for how the movie portrays it AND coincides with my theory that City Hall is still further inland than Riddler's apartment, but the flooding was aggressive enough to still severely impact it, making it about the half-way point between the shoreline and the wealthy neighborhoods that were untouched, and thus, about 45 minutes/25 miles from Riddler's apartment, because the flood level it appears to have compared to the DEEPEST parts is about half the size <3
tl;dr yeah he probably skidaddled like 25 miles on foot which makes sense bc he also scrambled down the fire escape and zooted into that diner because a lady literally tells us he did gghdksg BRO'S A SCAMPERER

@wickedlyxcreepy: [ Catastrophe Pt 13 ]
Toralei growled as she found herself surrounded on all sides. These ghoul-damned goody-ghouls! Couldn't they just for once leave her alone?
Not that it really mattered, in the end. Despite what she'd promised Gigi -- with her claws crossed behind her back -- Toralei had never intended to really keep Catty's little relationship a secret. Catty Noir was a big name star, after all -- the world deserved to know those kinds of details about her life!
That's why Toralei had already scheduled the pictures to go up online. She had anonymous accounts across a few websites, and she had selected a handful to post the pictures to, just to be sure that the cat got out of the bag. They were all due to go up in a matter of minutes…
… and there was nothing the goody-ghouls could do about it.
The sound of someone's voice besides Cleo's brought Toralei back to the present. Catty was talking to Gigi, and Toralei's ears twitched as she focused on them instead of that jabbering mummy. When she could make out the words, the orange werecat rolled her eyes, huffing out an annoyed sigh.
"'Please don't shut me out,'" she mimicked, moving her claws like an additional mouth. Claw-d, how had she ever looked up to that silly singer?
"Honestly, I don't know why you even bother with her," Toralei said to Gigi gesturing dismissively toward Catty. Her fellow werecat didn't deserve any more attention than that. "I can't imagine saddling myself to a mewling kitten as pathetic as that."
She shrugged. "But, on the other hand, look who I'm talking to! It makes sense that one pathetic weakling would attract another pathetic weakling. I shouldn't really be so surprised."

❝ I'm sorry... I promise I won't. Never again... ❞
Gigi only was listening to Catty, showing a small smile but her worries were threatening to crawl out. She only wanted her safe and yet she pushed her away to do so. Just like she tried to do with Whisp...
She hopes her kitten would forgive her for doing so. Gigi would make sure she would do right by Catty.
Toralei's last few words though... struck a bit of a nerve. The genie didn't care if she was insulting her own being, but for Catty...
She didn't know what or why it came out... but even Allah's patience had limits...
❝ Maybe if you had someone who actually loved you, you would understand. ❞
The jeers and callouts behind her from the other ghouls towards Toralei were ignored by Gigi as she embraced Catty with all her might...
... and then the moment was interrupted by the sounds of phones going off all at the same time.
Gigi pulled away as the ghouls gasped behind her, Frankie being the most vocal. Seeing the looks on their faces, Gigi's dread came back all at once seeing the headlines...
[ QUEEN OF LOVE SONGS FINALLY SNATCHED UP? ] [ POPULAR POP STAR'S SECRET FLING? ] [ CATTY NOIR OFFICIALLY OFF THE MARKET? ] [ MYSTERIOUS GHOUL AT CARNIVAL WITH CATTY! ]
No... no... despite all she had done... Toralei let it happened anyway?
A mixture of emotions swirled around her right now that Gigi' barely heard anything before she turned to look to her ghoulfriend...
❝ ... Catty? ❞
What were they going to do now? Their secret was out!

When Populist Leaders Fail, They Blame the People

tl;dr - Populist leaders blame citizens for policy failures to avoid accountability—dividing society and undermining democracy worldwide.
Populist leaders rise to power on the promise that they alone can fix what’s broken. They channel frustration, capitalize on cultural division, and claim to represent the “will of the people.” But what happens when those promises prove hollow, their policies falter, and their bluster runs aground? Instead of facing accountability, they often pivot to blame the very people they vowed to uplift.
This toxic cycle, where populist leaders scapegoat citizens for their own failures, is becoming increasingly common. From Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil to Narendra Modi in India, and Donald Trump in the United States, the pattern is clear: populists ascend by promising to dismantle the status quo, then recoil from responsibility when reality undercuts their mythmaking.
Populism frames itself as a rebellion against elites. Yet in power, populists often govern like strongmen, demanding loyalty over competence and dismissing dissent as betrayal. When the promised economic revival doesn’t materialize, or a crisis reveals incompetence, these leaders don’t re-evaluate their strategies. Instead, they double down on nationalism, deflect blame, and accuse ordinary people of undermining their vision.
Consider the COVID-19 pandemic. In the US, former President Donald Trump routinely blamed Americans for not following guidance—even as his administration undercut its own health experts, spread misinformation, and politicized masks and vaccines. Rather than admit policy missteps, Trump scapegoated Democratic governors, scientists, and ultimately the public. As Scientific American noted, it was a “failure of leadership at every level.”
Why do populist leaders blame the people? It’s a political strategy rooted in survival. Admitting failure risks shattering the myth of the infallible strongman. By projecting failure onto the populace, or an internal “enemy within”, they preserve their personal brand while fueling resentment that can be channeled into further division.
This tactic works particularly well in polarized societies. In Hungary, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán blamed ordinary Hungarians for economic hardship, accusing them of lacking patriotism when they protested inflation and price hikes. He and other populists often suggest that resistance to their policies is unpatriotic, dangerous, or manipulated by foreign forces.
Blaming the public is also a way to avoid confronting the limitations of simplistic solutions. Populists tend to campaign on grandiose but vague promises, “build the wall,” “drain the swamp,” “make India great again”, with little policy detail. When those promises falter, they turn to the people: “You didn’t try hard enough. You weren’t loyal enough. You let us down.”
This isn’t just a US phenomenon, it’s a global pattern. Populist governments often weaponize blame as a governance tool.
In the Philippines, former President Rodrigo Duterte’s bloody drug war criminalized poverty itself, blaming addicts and slum dwellers for social decay while ignoring systemic corruption and inequality.
In the UK, Brexit was sold as a return to sovereignty. When economic realities hit, leaders like Boris Johnson blamed the British people and “remoaners” for resisting national progress.
India's Narendra Modi, during the catastrophic COVID-19 wave of 2021, deflected criticism over health care failures by demonizing opposition leaders and accusing state governments of mishandling supplies.
In all these cases, the common thread is the personalization of power and the externalization of blame. Populist leaders define themselves as embodiments of the nation. When they fail, the failure is reframed as the people’s. It’s a strategy that not only distorts democracy, but erodes public trust.
What makes this strategy particularly dangerous is that it feeds into cult-like politics. Populist leaders often cast themselves as near-messianic figures. Trump’s infamous declaration that “I could shoot somebody on Fifth Avenue and not lose voters” was no joke. The idea is that loyalty trumps logic, that devotion matters more than results.
In such political environments, criticism is treason, failure is sabotage, and facts are fluid. When leaders position themselves as infallible, accountability becomes impossible. Instead of healthy debate, you get propaganda. Instead of civic responsibility, you get blame.
And when this worldview takes root, democratic institutions suffer. Media are branded as “enemies of the people.” Elections are preemptively discredited. Courts are attacked as biased. All while the leader blames the nation’s hardships on internal “others”: immigrants, urban elites, academics, minorities, protesters. Anyone but themselves.
Where populists divide, the rest of us must unite. Where populists deflect, we must address root causes: inequality, corporate greed, systemic racism, climate change. Blaming individuals for systemic failure is not leadership, it’s cowardice. Leadership means owning mistakes and fixing them, not shifting blame to the powerless.
President Biden’s approach to pandemic recovery is an example of what this looks like. While imperfect, his administration made vaccines widely available, passed relief bills to aid struggling Americans, and acknowledged early missteps. Rather than demonize skeptics, his team focused on outreach. That’s the difference between governance and performance.
One of the cruelest consequences of this blame-first leadership is how it disproportionately harms the most vulnerable. When the poor are told their poverty is their fault, social safety nets are weakened. When minorities are blamed for crime, policies turn punitive. When immigrants are cast as invaders, xenophobic violence surges.
These are not rhetorical dangers they are measurable realities. Hate crimes in the U.S. spiked by over 20% in the years after Trump’s election. Anti-Asian violence surged during the pandemic, fueled by conspiracy theories. LGBTQ+ communities face new legislative attacks, justified by moral panic narratives.
When leaders fail and blame the public, they don't just deflect, they destroy. They erode empathy. They break social cohesion. And they create a political culture where cruelty is not just accepted but celebrated.
It’s time to raise the standard. Citizens must demand more from their leaders: more honesty, more humility, more solutions. Populist failures are not the people's fault. They're the result of deliberate political choices: to prioritize headlines over policy, ego over empathy, and division over democracy.
The real test of leadership isn’t how well someone can scapegoat others. It’s how they rise when their policies falter. Do they admit fault? Do they listen? Do they change course? Or do they lash out at the very people they swore to protect?
Our future depends on choosing leaders who choose truth over blame. And that means resisting the seductive narrative that says you’re to blame when the powerful fall short. You’re not. You never were.
We’ve been here before. History is full of strongmen who blamed the masses. But we also know the way forward: through community, truth, and a politics rooted in shared responsibility. Let’s leave behind the populist trap of blame and build a society where leaders serve—and are held accountable by—the people. All of them.
The next time a populist leader blames you for their failures, remember: that’s not strength. It’s fear. Real power lies in empathy. Real leadership begins with accountability. And real change? That starts with us.

Venus Is Not Nekkid
aka what does Venus really look like?
Ok so you've probably seen pics of Venus like:
which is amazing 1990s radar data from NASA's Magellan spacecraft that discovered its surprisingly young, almost crater-free surface and fissures and lava flows and shield volcanoes:

Which was a vast improvement, because apart from 6 photos of the surface by Russian landers asking "why me?", all we had before were grainy Mariner & Pioneer images from the 1970s showing Venus wrapped in featureless clouds in visible light or striped in ultraviolet:

Magellan's radar peered through the clouds to reveal a surface less than 500,000 years old. Without plate tectonics to release heat, hotspots ooze continually, resurfacing the planet in a way that may resemble primitive Earth before plate tectonics.
More terrifyingly, Venus may have been habitable for billions of years until it had a massive flood lava catastrophe like the Earth at the end of the Permian, when 95% of life on our planet died. Except on Venus it was even worse, setting off a runaway greenhouse effect that boiled away the oceans.
Most solar system "family portraits" show Venus with Magellan's false-color radar data, naked, stripped of her thick blanket of clouds:

US "Views of Our Planets" stamps (Mercury also false color, Jupiter & Uranus UV I think)
But that's not how Venus looks through a backyard telescope. She's a shining white pearl, which was why the Greeks & Romans recognized her as Aphrodite/Venus.
In 2020, JPL engineer Kevin M Gill reconstructed a visible-spectrum portrait of Venus from old 1974 Mariner 10 probe data using UV and other odd wavelengths:

See this writeup on the image with a discussion of Venus' crazy clouds racing around the planet like a toxic hurricane.
A whole community of astronomers and image wizards has grown up hunting through old missions for data they can crunch and de-noise with data processing tools to create new, better images. Space agencies have taken note and now post data for them to play with.
So when 2015 Japan's dogged Akatsuki spacecraft finally made it to Venus after several mishaps, we got its first [UV images]:

Then they started posting raw data from all their instruments (UV and near-IR, because a white pearl is pretty but not as useful for science) and the image wizards went to work.

[two UV images combined by Damia Bouic]
Citizen scientist Damia Bouic has a whole blog post of gorgeous Venus images she's processed from Akatsuki data: Here's just a few. They're false color to bring out details, but I think (?) she's using the visible-spectrum colors of Venus for the color and the UV and/or IR data for saturation and brightness.

Venus' night side in infrared (detects heat). Check out that funky wave. clouds at the equator move the fastest, but I'm not sure what's causing that.

Another UV image processed by Damia Bouic
TL;DR: Venus is Beauty in visible light, the Beast on the surface, and I guess you'd call UV/IR views "I have a bad feeling about this."

The Catastrophe of Success Tennesse Williams.
Tennessee Williams thesis is that material success can undermine artistic integrity and achievement which then affects all aspects of life. This was the mindset he found himself in after the success of The Glass Menagerie. If you are interested a search online will be very informative - it will be TL;DR here.
A case of be careful of what you wish for.
Financial success for Sam and Caitriona is evident. After 10 years and eight seasons of Outlander financial success has outpaced creative success and growth. It would be generous to say career growth has plateaued for Sam right now. Caitriona has a couple of films waiting for release.
The past few months have shown a man who is clearly floundering in his PR perception of his personal life. He has shown himself to be louche and inept.
What catastrophic lapse in awareness and judgement had him pay a prostitute pretend to be a new mystery woman in his life?
Sam has all the benefits of wealth. Properties, cars and bikes, first class travel and yet to the casual fan, industry acquaintances and king makers he shows a shambolic public private life.
Sam is not Leonardo Di Caprio. An AList Peter Pan who is mocked for his relationships with young women who are accepting of his ways for the prize, publicity and notoriety as his girlfriend. Leo’s gratis arrangements are carefully designed, unlike Sam’s literal ham fisted Soho pap walk photos.
Following on that disaster another woman du jour this time at the very genteel Saturday at the tennis. Of course no acknowledgement of her on his socials. He leaves it to her and public TV coverage of the match to attempt game, set match.
He must be wondering is it worth it.
The ripples from this thesis have never been more apparent than these past few months with a parade of casual women of interest who diminish him. The pursuit of financial freedom and success by choosing to appeal to a diehard percentage of Sam only OL fans has come at a cost that Sam deals with daily.
Catastrophe of Success.
