Perhaps, the whole "Lemuria needs the heart" thing is not what we or Rafayel or the Lemurians think it is. Perhaps, it is something different- like the "sacrifice" knowing everything and still choosing to give her heart to Rafayel. Perhaps, it is giving her "heart", her love, to him knowing all that he is, his role, his duty, and still accepting and loving him. Perhaps, it is not a literal removal of her heart that accomplishes the requirements and no one got that, and that's why there were several "God's of the Sea" before Rafayel, because their way of doing the sacrifice was wrong and only lasted a short while. Perhaps, Rafayel and MC will get his happy ending after all. MAYBE.

Do I have a basis for this idea, you ask? Why, yes. I do, actually.

In the latest story update with Rafayel there is a scene where he needs "the blood of the one who holds a bond with the God of the Sea" to activate the Tome of the Sea God and awaken the powers. That could certainly be interpreted as something truly awful, but Rafayel being who he is and loving MC, he merely cuts her finger enough to spill the smallest of blood.

And it works.

The Tome of the Sea God activates, Rafayel gets a power boost (implied), and MC has memories unlocked, breaking her curse to always forget just a tad.

This is interesting because if she, as the sacrifice, is cursed to never remember him, and yet, the act of them willingly and openly trusting each other and working together caused for him to gain some of the power of the Sea God back AND forth MC to get back some of her lost memories then clearly that is the answer. That is the difference this time.

Rafayel was honest with her, and she chose to trust him- with her heart- with her life- she chose to accept him. And it worked.

So, perhaps, that is the key that they will discover in this lifetime. Perhaps Rafayel was right all along, and killing his love was not the way to save Lemuria.

Evol

This is the first part in my collection of lore from love & deepspace.

"A special superpower only possessed by a small portion of the human population. Those who have Evol are called Evolvers. After many studies into the field of Evol, scientists can now extract its power, create new weapons, and use it to improve daily life." - Spacepedia

*Even compiling all traces of Evol lore, it still is not explained that well so this has more conjecture than normal.

Despite nearly every person we meet having an Evol, they are supposed to be rare. There is not really any information on how they evolve. They could have existed before the Catastrophe, which would make sense because everyone we meet is older than it, or be a mutation/effect of some sort from the presence of Metaflux. It is likely the former as Ever, a research company who seems to be older than the Deepspace Tunnel, was at least at some point, and perhaps still is, researching them. We know for certain that Ever has been around for a while researching Evols as there is abandoned equipment on the rooftop of the Solon Hotel, a place in the N109 Zone.

Due to this superpower, Evolvers excel in fighting and combat, which explains why Deepspace Hunters are also Evolvers.* We know that Evols grant their owners an array of different powers. Examples of different Evol powers that are cannon include; fire (Rafayel), light (Xavier), ice (Zanye), telekinesis (Caleb), energy manipulation (Sylus). It is unclear if Evols are unique to each person who has an Evol or if they come in various types (like benders in ATLA).

Evols can also be used to craft powerful weapons or have their power extracted from them, although it is unclear how either of these would happen. Ever, a powerful big name tech/research company, is the leader in Evol research and weapon development. 

On the note of energy extraction, a flux stabilizer (not to be confused with a flux nexus) is a tool that can use “stored Evol Energy to balance out Metaflux,” and is the primary tool for controlling the presence of wanderers. You can often find flux stabilizers in areas open to the public. It is unclear how many exist or how far their reach goes, but it is reasonable to assume that there are multiple, especially in any heavily populated areas. It is also reasonable to assume that there are redundancies too (multiple flux stabilizers with overlapping fields). Evol weapons, like the ones that Hunters use, also appear to utilize the energy of a Protocore, which reportedly strengthens Evols and Evol Energy. The Evol-enhanced weapons that Hunter’s used are designed to eradicate Wanderers without harming humans; how they do this is unclear. Hunter Weapons come in a wide variety (all of the weapons you can choose from are, including the one that Sylus tries to gift to you).

* In the Spacepedia entry for Protofield, it mentions how the Hunter’s Association requires two Evolvers for field work, which implies that only Evolvers are able to be part of the Hunters Association, or at least they are the only ones who are allowed to actually be UNICORNS or doing field work

QUICK LORE DIVE GUIDE 📖

WARNING: Spoilers ahead for Rafayel's, Xavier's, and Zayne's story. It is not heavy, but it is necessary to understand.

Due to the requests I've been receiving in Discord for a lore guide, I decided to make a brief post about it. This won't be able to answer all the questions, so feel free to ask me. I'll do my best to respond. Please note that this is simply my personal guide and not an official one. What works for me may not work for others.

A few things to note:

Anecdotes can be read in its natural order, but it's set the way it is for narrative experience. My order is just based on what I noticed came before or after.

There is no prioritization for LIs, but I follow the order of narrative in Sarah Brightman's theme song. This goes by Rafayel, Xavier, and Zayne.

Myths' conjunction to the Linkon timeline is currently and canonically unknown. There are theories and speculations in the community, but this is not that kind of post. This is a focus on making lore more digestible efficiently.

While this may be an efficient guide, I also suggest looking back to the text every once in a while to refresh memory. Not necessary, but it's helpful with understanding the story.

Zayne's story involves different timelines, so Anecdotes 2 and 3 will be easier to understand after reading it.

I suggest watching the prologue in Chapter 1 and the epilogue in Chapter 8.

Once again, this is just a guideline. What may work for me may not work for others. If more lore is released in the future, I will be adjusting this post to it. As much as I try to, I'm not well-versed in all of the LIs' lores, so feel free to provide suggestions.

Zayne and Siming

First of all, if you’re unfamiliar with the lore of Love and Deepspace, and don’t want to be majorly spoiled for just about everything (mainly Zayne’s lore), then I suggest you skip for now until you learn more. Unless you don’t care about spoilers, then go ahead.

I think that to all of us, so far, other than Sylus(who can blame him, he’s new), Zayne is the most confusing character to the Western audience. Rafayel tells us he’s a mermaid every other sentence, and Xavier has more than a few clues pointing to the fact that he’s a time traveler from another planet and possibly immortal?

Zayne’s main thing that seems to be talked about frequently in his cards and events are more so things related to Gods, fate, and fortune telling. And for me, for a while, this didn’t make a ton of sense to me, because I felt like I didn’t really have anything super specific to compare it to, but clearly he’s not just based off of anything random, you’re meant to recognize him as some specific God of Fate/reader of fate. And then Infold released this video when they released Master of Fates, and I realized that in Chinese, the myth was called Da Siming, which is a real Chinese god. So I got to work. Welcome to my Ted Talk on why Zayne’s entire story, mainly focusing on his main story counterpart, is still Siming in modern day Linkon City. 

Disclaimer: I am no Chinese mythology expert, this is simply what I’ve learned from Google and what that video Infold released tells us.

Who is Siming?

Siming is a Chinese deity or deified functionary of that title(meaning this title can pass from person to person) who makes fine adjustments to human fate (meaning you can pray to him for things as small as a chest cold etc)

He is referred to in Chinese as almost a secretary, his job in allocating human lifespans is almost a bureaucratic one. Think a guy in an insurance office.

Siming's main duty/power is the balancing of yin and yang, specifically in regards to human health/lifespans. He has the power to either shorten or lengthen life essentially as he sees fit (as long as it doesn't fuck things up too badly).

There can be more than one Siming at a time, who take on slightly different roles. Such as Da Siming(Greater Siming) acting as a Priest of Death, and a Shao Siming(Lesser Siming) acting as a Priest of Birth (this is just an example taken from a movie)

other titles (aside from Master of Fate) include Director of Allotted Life Spans, and Director of Destinies

While the 'job' of Siming can be passed down to multiple different people, the length of time they end up serving as Siming can result in different qualifying titles being added to them. 'Da Siming' (which is the one Infold told the story of when they released Shifu in that video apparently no one watched) would be more revered. "Da" means big, or greater, meaning he held that title for a great period of time. Bitch was tenured.

The 3 deathbringers

Essentially 3 spirits who take residence in the 3 energy centers of the human body. (head, chest, abdomen. probably only the chest would be relevant to us, given that Zayne is a cardiac surgeon)

these spirits enter the human body at birth, and seek to hasten the death of their hosts. 

Siming controls the process of these deathbringers killing their hosts, he may or may not permit it. 

to regulate this process, Siming relies on reports given to him by the deathbringers, which are brought to him on specific dates. Based on what he learns he may or may not use that information (and possibly other information) to decide whether or not to shorten or lengthen that specific persons lifespan. 

This bitch is not making sweeping decisions, he's looking at every individual person.

humans are believed to have various things available to alter the judgment of Siming regarding their fates, such as interfering with the reporting process, praying to Siming or his superiors, or following treatment from a doctor to improve the yin-yang balance, and thus extend their lifespan.

Other things:

There's a story about an ancient man who finds a skull on the ground, and mourns the fact that this person never had a proper burial. He lays down on the skull and uses it as a pillow, then has a dream where the skull comes to him and tells him about the tranquility and happiness found in death. The man tells the skull that he could petition Siming to bring him back to life, and then he would be able to return to his family. The skull denies he would want that, asking rhetorically to the man, 'why would anyone in such a peaceful and happy place as death ever want to return to the suffering of living?'

Where do we see these elements pop up in Zayne’s story?

Now, we already know that at the very least Zayne’s Master of Fate myth is heavily based on this deity, and you can see some elements of Siming in Foreseer as well. Foreseer most likely takes place in the far future from Master of Fates given that he resides on Philos, and we know that Philos is the planet humanity started inhabiting only after Earth was destroyed. Philos is also where both Xavier and Sylus are from. This is no Xavier lore post, but if you know anything about his lore, you know that he’s come back in time from the future. There will be a section on Foreseer below, but for now I want to focus on why I believe Zayne is still Siming in present day Linkon City.

The story of the man and the skull immediately brought me back to the World Underneath: Snowy Stairs, where Carter is actively trying to recruit Zayne to Xander Sciences for the purpose of bringing people back from the dead.

Snowy Stairs

First, we see Carter come across (well he’s kind of stalking him actually) Zayne who is consoling a child about the death of their dog, Pilot. The child is asking him to do something to save the dog, and Zayne simply tells him that he’s already dead, while Carter pulls out a Protocore and tells the child that he can bring the dog back to life with it.  

Carter and Zayne then have a mostly one sided conversation about the morals and ethics of using Protocores to bring people and animals back to life. Carter asks Zayne if the natural law is an unshakable moral boundary, or if it’s a comfort people use. 

I see two things here: As Siming, the ability for humans to bring themselves back to life despite the natural law would be a great disruption to the balance of fate, or yin and yang, which would explain why Zayne is so against this process, even though he himself was clearly interested in it at one point for the sole and selfish reason of keeping MC from dying. It seems to me that although Zayne is Siming, MC has some sort of destined death associated with her that is outside of his jurisdiction. Possibly because he has shirked his duties in order to keep her safe in the past (shielding her with umbrellas instead of killing her like he was supposed to as the Master of Fates.)

Carter then tells Zayne of a patient who is on the verge of death and asks him to come take a look and help them at Xander Sciences. Zayne does not appear, and though they seemingly have all the tools to save the man, they still fail. Is it maybe because as Siming, Zayne truly does alone have the power to control life and death? 

Carter then shouts as Zayne gets up to leave: “Our job is to save people. If we can control life and death, why shouldn’t we?!” Which is another clear reference to the job of Siming and the delicate balance he maintains. 

Side note, something else they’re referring to in this part is possibly this procedure of bringing life back has something to do with the creation of Wanderers? Unsure.

Then, Zayne oversees a couple essentially praying to have their son back. Siming controls life and death, and may respond to prayers if he so chooses to. He doesn’t bring the man back to life, but instead cleans the body so that the parents may properly say goodbye to their son. 

In this anecdote what we learn is that Zayne alone is seen as capable of controlling life and death, and it is implied that in whatever research he did on this subject, he found a solution. One that he rejects, possibly because it is a process that can and will result in creating Abominations, as seen in the Dawnbreaker anecdote. Wanderers/Abominations may be like the undead, resulting in these people not finding the proper peace in death. 

Other main story things

Mainly what I’m seeing in main story/event stories is that we are talking about Siming a lot with our present day Zayne, in terms of Gods of fate, and etc(Spceifically I’m thinking about the silk balls event, where that was the main focus of the conversation with him).

Foreseer/Master of Fates

Like I said, I don’t want to go into too much detail on Foreseer, but the fact that he has the power to see into Fate, and has superiors (Astra) tells me that he at least has some of the same powers as he did when he was the Master of Fates. Master of Fates seems to be a more peaceful era of his life as Siming, where I am assuming that all of the slips and scrolls MC is helping him record are indeed related to his ‘reporting’ as Siming, going back to the idea that Siming is more or less a sort of secretary, a record keeper. I believe he fell out of favor with the Gods when he chose to protect MC instead of killing her as he was told by either one of his deathbringers, or one of his superiors(I’m inclined to think it’s the latter).

I believe that after the moment when he chooses to protect MC rather than kill her as he said he would, he went on the run. We later find him as Dr. Zayne, and something happens in the story(we don't know yet) which results in him becoming the Foreseer. 

Foreseer was supposed to let her die as well, or possibly never even meet her, but he instead chooses to finally accept the consequences of his actions as Master of Fates and possibly Dr. Zayne and instead sacrifices himself so that she can live as a sort of. Equal exchange. 

That's uh… that's all I got right now! Will possibly add more to this post later we shall see. Basically I feel like I’m just seeing a lot of parallels between all of Zayne’s major character beats/themes and this specific Chinese deity, and by the Rafayel Precedent(telling us he’s a mermaid and then turning out to be a mermaid), I would not be surprised at all if Dr. Zayne in the main story ends up just being Siming.

Never Ending Winter: Zayne Anecdote #2

First mention of Dawnbreaker and also where we get the info of Zayne's Nightmare into Dawnbreaker's world.

Zayne mentions the nightmares again and talks about how his current reality is more bloody than his nightmares (Dawn Breaker World)

We get Dr.Zayne's perspective as he is "in that world of ice and snow" Zayne attacks himself from his perspective with dark crystals (which we know from The third ancedote is the color of Dawnbreaker's ice

Dr.Zayne refers to this black coated version of him as the Grim Reaper.

Zayne almost accidentally killed someone important to him when he was 12. He was 12 when he first started getting dreams of Dawnbreaker

After playing Love and Deepspace for a bit now, while going for a second play through this scene hits a lot harder after you learn the lore of the Lemurians and Rafayel specifically

Let's talk lore and theories below, shall we~

Knowing that Raymond should have died by now, and that he WANTS Zayne to ask why (coupled with the Lemurian skeleton) is pretty much a dead giveaway that he's harvesting them for his longevity. He seems smug that he's done what Zayne and his fellow Doctors couldn't, and then almost taunts that Zayne is being held back by staying at Akso.

What I didn't catch the first time, however, was that he's keyed into the area Zayne is researching (the Tower or whatever it is currently) on Mt. Eternal.

As far as I know, Xander Sciences isn't a name we've heard again (correct me if I'm wrong, this is why I'm replaying the whole story again, so I can try and catch the things I didn't understand the first time), but we know someone is after Rafayel specifically and this is a pretty good lead already.

The irony of it all though, is Raymond having the "cursed" painting that almost killed him.

I can't remember if this painting was specifically made for Raymond (commissioned?) or a chance purchase, but my god it's kind of amazing on Raffy's part if it was purposefully done. Sending a booby trapped painting of the bloody death of your people to the man who's brutally harvesting them and displaying their remains in his home like a fucked up macabre museum piece. It's just 😚👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼 so perfect.

I won't lie, the whole chapter is so much more uncomfortable and creepy when you've got more context 😖

WORLD UNDERNEATH 3 SUMMARY

WARNING: Spoilers ahead for Rafayel's story. Anecdote 3 (Siren's Song) and Chapter 7 of the main story must be read prior to this one for better understanding.

Long story short:

Set after the events of Chapter 7, World Underneath 1 follows Rafayel as he commissions flowers and a wedding venue for Talia’s wedding. His interactions with Charles, the garden’s owner, and Talia reveal more about Rafayel’s character, showing his emotional complexity, role conflicts, and a hidden past. These facets manifest in his struggle to trust temporary comforts, a conflict between his duty as Lemuria’s protector and his personal desires, and the darkness that envelops him when memories of his past resurface. Throughout the anecdote, a secret girl is mentioned to have enamored Rafayel—either in the past or present—that he can’t let go of. Talia emphasizes the importance of having an anchor, to which Rafayel asserts that Lemuria has more importance. Despite Raymond’s death, he remains vigilant, unable to trust temporary comfort. Later, they attend Raymond’s funeral to pay respect to the Lemurian he kept in the fish tank. His mother accuses Rafayel of being a murderer, but he remains unfazed. Raymond was only 39. He had an opportunity for a fresh start and rebirth, only for it to be snatched away from him because of the painting. Reflecting on Talia’s words regarding an anchor, he takes flame lilies from Charles and wonders if the person he associates with it can be his anchor. He’s not sure. But while the darkness has yet to come, he’ll get good sleep before the nightmares arrive.

Charles, a garden’s owner, and Rafayel look at which plants will be good for Talia and her lover’s wedding. They met through conservation work for endangered plants and animals.

The owner says that choosing flowers is a psychological process akin to trying to understand another person, and giving one is said to be a surefire way to their heart. He is hinting for Rafayel to give it to MC.

Rafayel and Talia talk. He is acting aloof, despite being the one who commissioned Charles for her wedding. She asks for his blessing, but he is stingy about it, saying that he has already done it before.

He tries to hang up and shows Charles a sketch of a flower bouquet for the wedding, matching Talia’s favorite gemstone and the color of her wedding dress. To her elation, Rafayel didn’t hang up properly, so she looks forward to his presence.

Rafayel is annoyed. Charles says there’s no point in hiding it if he’s going.

The garden owner points out that his plans will be harshly criticized, to which Rafayel becomes lost in thought. Charles thinks that maybe he’s thinking about his lover.

Rafayel observes the guests’ interactions. They are praising Talia. At a table, a group of Lemurians whisper to each other. There is a familiar face he hadn’t seen since “the disaster,” who is cheerfully playing an ancient Lemurian instrument.

Talia’s husband likes whatever she likes, and says that he designed her dress for her. Rafayel thinks that choosing a dress may also be a process of understanding that person. He’s silent, then mentions that Raymond is dead.

Talia seems relieved, saying that they can get a good night’s sleep for now. Rafayel repeats “for now.” He doesn’t want fleeting happiness. When pointed out, he avoids it.

Despite the happy occasion, the Lemurians’ joy seems to have a looming darkness. She says that she married not because she forgot the past, but because she wants to live in the present. Every Lemurian is looking for an anchor—a reason to live, and she and others have found theirs. She pointedly refers to Rafayel as someone who doesn’t realize how important it is to have an anchor.

To him, Lemuria is more important. She asks him if there is anything that can pull him back when his heart is devouring him. Then she asks if he can let “her” go. This is implied to be MC.

Rafayel’s eyes darken. Talia asks if he ever thought about his own wedding. He leaves the scene that doesn’t belong to him, saying no.

Yellow gardenias symbolize freedom, happiness, and rebirth. Rafayel intends to give it to a relative’s daughter. For a funeral.

He attends Raymond’s funeral, which is being held at the living room. Upon passing the butler, the man scrutinizes Rafayel. He ignores the malicious glances and moves in front of the Lemurian skeleton within the fish tank.

After pausing very shortly, he turns to the coffin. He puts the gardenias on top of it, making sure the beautiful side faces the fish tank. Rafayel silently recites a eulogy.

Talia sings a dirge. Sunlight passes through the fish tank, and the skeleton is described to be gazing at the sky in a frozen pose.

An elderly woman calls him a murderer, claiming that her boy was only 39. It was supposed to be a time for rebirth, a fresh start, but because of a painting that didn’t make any sense, he died.

Reporters surround him. With her son dead, her anchor was taken by a dark tide. Rafayel is calm as he leaves the room full of cameras.

A week from then, Rafayel visits Talia in a small house in Verona. He asks if her husband ever designed a wedding dress. She says he hasn’t, but if Rafayel wanted to commission him, she could help him get a family discount.

Talia tosses him a bouquet of flowers, the remaining of what she wanted to give him that day. An unknown flower reminds him of someone.

He remembers what Talia said about looking for an anchor, which is why they’re still here.

Charles wraps up the fiery flame lilies Rafayel chose. The Lemurian says he is giving them to someone. The gardener asks if he is giving himself away. Charles has a hunch that there must be someone in Rafayel’s heart he didn’t want to mention.

Rafayel doesn’t know if he should give away the bouquet, nor has he come up with a good excuse.

He remembers what Talia asked about what could pull him back when his heart is devouring him, but is avoiding the underlying meaning. He wonders if the flame lily bouquet could become his anchor. He’s not sure.

The black waves haven’t fully rolled in. He still has a chance to get good sleep. Before he has to face the never-ending tsunami in his dreams alone.
