By definition, ‘PLAY IT BY EAR’ is a phrase about letting go and allowing yourself to adapt to new ways of life and thought. In the process of curating these every other week, I learned more about myself as a creative and what this brand could actually be than I anticipated. My initial motivations for creating PLAY IT BY EAR changed as I received feedback on what I was doing and others wanted to become involved (s/o my team, Jon, Logan, Trevor, and any one else who’s been a part of the journey). It felt less important for me to curate as it did to communicate what the brand really stood for, which is the idea that listening to good music is a healing practice and the experiences we have with it come from a spiritual place. That being said, I felt like it was time to transition out of this playlist/newsletter series into other forms of content that served our purpose better.
In our world today, a lot of things feel like automatic processes, including how we interact with music. For me, my relationship with music has always felt deeper than just being told five new albums dropped on my timeline. It’s about the times I’m in the car with a friend, and they put me on to something new. The moments when a song is being played at a concert and that memory gets ingrained into my head forever. These ethereal moments take me back to the present and are what I live for. That being said, sharing songs & creating conversations about them will always be our goal and is what you can expect from us. Thank you to everyone who’s been tapped in with me throughout these 50 playlists/newsletters. I can’t wait to share more music with you and am stoked for you all to be a part of the next chapter in our growth.
much love, laz.

Summer In The Ends - Juls, Jaz Karis, George The Poet
WHERE: ‘Sounds of My Wold’ is one of the few albums that dropped this past year & had no misses for me. WHY: This song touches upon the meditative and cathartic experience that music can provide for us when we’re fully present with it. It felt right to open up the final playlist with this message.
‘Drown out the noise, listen to the sound of my voice, and take a second to refuel. ‘Cuz when you stop worrying about other people life is kinda peaceful. So come, go through the motions with me, I want you to breathe in and hold it for three. Breathe in. Breathe out. Let go and release, this is your moment of peace.’
Abundance - Mndsgn
WHERE: ‘Rare Pleasure’ was another no miss album for me. Some days I’d have the whole record on loop for hours because of the peace it brought me. WHY: The perfect way to follow up a record like ‘Slow Dance,’ ‘Abundance’ is a joyful & simple instrumental that feels bright and full without doing too much.
Some Kinda Love - LOONY
WHERE: My friend Kelly (who’s been editing every PLAY IT BY EAR communication since day one, thanks Kellz!!!) had this song playing during a pensive car ride a few months ago. WHY: LOONY captures that feeling of wholeness you get from the experience of love.
‘How it feels to love (up above, angels sing) (I can feel everything)
Be Better - DJ Harrison
WHERE: First heard about DJ Harrison in 2019 after hearing ‘Where Do We Go From Here’ by Mac Ayres. WHY: DJ Harrison’s production is always a fun mixture of colorful jazz & hip hop instrumentals. This track is a great representation of his sound and is of course, lyrically appealing.
Joy - PARTYNEXTDOOR
WHERE: I’m pretty sure I’ve mentioned this before, but I really wasn’t into PARTYNEXTDOOR until multiple conversations with friends had convinced me to give his discography a second chance. Now, he’s been one of the most repeated artists on these playlists, and in general for me over the past two years. WHY: Party’s music is the perfect vibe for me when I’m driving late at night. ‘Joy’ is an interlude from P3 that feels like a frustrated stream of consciousness & expresses a deep desire for joy. A pretty complex emotional state to try and capture in my opinion, but he does it perfectly here.
ttK - Kristina Alcordo
WHERE: Kristina Alcordo is one of my favorite low key females & writers in R&B right now. WHY: ‘ttK’ is a confident message about a relationship that’s misunderstood by others which again, is a topic that could be quite complex but Kristina shares with ease.
Pressure - ap eightyone
WHERE: I’ve known ap for a while now and heard him play this song live around two months ago. WHY: ap is tapped into just about everything I am (we follow damn near all the same artists and accounts lol). ‘Pressure’ is an extremely empathetic and emotional record which is also what I love about ap as an artist.
Home - Gloria Barnes
WHERE: Probably the most referenced ‘WHERE’ on PLAY IT BY EAR, Hablot Brown’s ‘HB Weekly’ playlist. WHY: This track had a resurgence after being sampled for CARIBOU’s single of the same name, but Gloria herself only released one album and had a pretty low key career in the music industry. Her vocals feel incredibly raw and honest, and it felt right to close things out with a soulful tune about coming back to a place of comfort and security.

Old Car - Yeek
WHERE: I went to see Yeek live years ago at the Moroccan lounge without knowing much about him around the time this album ‘Sebastian’ came out. It took me a while to get into it, but over time this album specifically became heavy on rotation for me. WHY: Old Car is a painful tune about regret towards leaving someone for another person you thought would be better. Yeek is an amazingly emotional and reflective songwriter, and this song has been a peak example of it.
Rosie - Figmore, JUICEBOX, 10.4 Rog
WHERE: This album was suggested to me recently after playing the CARRTOONS ‘Saturday Morning’ album. WHY: Figmore is a joint project between producers JUICEBOX and 10.4 Rog, and the album is nothing but jazz, beats, and psychedelic music which you probably already know by now is my shit. ‘Rosie’ tells a coming of age story dealing with your first love in a fun and almost comical way. I especially love that melody repeated by the horn section throughout the song (side note: there's another track by the same title, Rosie by John Mayer, that is one of my favorite more low key tracks by him).
Juggling my hormones like a love lost clown Getting high off of all the times they let me down On and ever onward through the slip of time I am happy now but boy I miss that time...
With Love - LUSTBASS
WHERE: LUSTBASS may be my most featured producer on these playlists next to Knxwledge. His work with Jason Dhakal is unmatched. WHY: Sweet beat with a fitting title.
Menace II Society - Freddie Gibbs, Dom Kennedy, Polyester
WHERE: IG Story - Brandon Lee (@b.andrelee) WHY: This is a song I’ve been meaning to include on here for a minute. It’s a classic feeling G-Funk tune that makes me wanna drive fast down an open road.
Tell Me When - Christian Kuria
WHERE: One of my favorite artists coming out of the bay area right now. WHY: This track is such a feel-good love song, but I love that outro section at the end of the track the most. If it wasn’t obvious by now, I can be a real simp at times, so I love when artists use these types of lo-fi proclamations of love.
so into you - Flowervillain
WHERE: Randomly came on the queue when my brother Kelly (@kelllyan) and I were doing some work a few weeks ago. WHY: Beautiful flip mixing Tamia’s iconic ‘so into you’ with Childish Gambino’s triple j cover. More feels for you of course.
Queen Of Paisley - Silas Short
WHERE: My second favorite track by Silas Short. WHY: A smooth & sultry neo-soul joint, perfect for the gloomy vibes in LA recently.
Bad Girls - Blood Orange
WHERE: I originally heard Solange’s cover, which lead me to the original version. WHY: Love the 80s feel of this track. To me, I interpret this song to be a story about Blood Orange observing the faults of a young woman who’s visibly lost and him still inviting her into his space.
The bed you wake up in thats not your own. The makeup you applied two days ago. The night you lost your phone on the way home. The taxi ride where you decided your end goal. And still I try to lure you into my own hurricane, its like you spot me trying from a thousand miles away.

The Offering - Darkhouse Family
WHERE: definitely heard this one on a mix at one point but can’t remember who’s it was exactly. WHY: Wanted to use a more feel-good & upbeat mix of tracks this week, and this joint just felt like the perfect intro to set that mood off. The sentiments shared in the sample used here essentially explain one of my biggest outlooks on life, ‘Words are limiting.’ People often try to explain creativity, but often that explanation just puts things into a very limiting description of what’s actually being expressed. I believe that creative expression is how God/spirit/consciousness communicates itself through people and that it’s not meant to be explained, but instead, simply felt through fully.
‘It is with my deepest love And absolute respect That I give praise to my source of inspiration and light The universal principle of peace The gift of positive circumstance Allows all our beings to touch once again’
Human-Made Racing - madeintyo
WHERE: madeintyo is one of those artists that’ll pop up every now and then with a fresh version of his unique sound WHY: This track closes out his last album and is the perfect example of that fun & bouncy pocket that madeintyo knows how to get into the best.
Love Sign - Shock G’s Silky Remix - Prince, Shock G
WHERE: n/a WHY: One of my go-to songs while I’m driving on a nice day. I only discovered this track 2 years ago but for some reason I feel like I’ve known it my whole life. The groove & message on this one makes me smile. Show love always. RIP Shock G. RIP Prince.
‘If you only had one year left to live What good is the time you spend if you got no love to give? Let's all get up off the front and find a cause to back Then we can teach the babies replications of the act, of the act’
Let Go - IAMNOBODI
WHERE: IAMNOBODI is one of my go-to producers when it comes to beats I play in the background while working. WHY: Hearing ‘Gotta let go & let God’ repeated over and over again over this beat is a rare type of repetition I gladly welcome into my life.
Not Your Love - R.A.E.
WHERE: Delight Vol. 2 (Mix) - Butta B WHY: hella 90s vibes. Definitely obsessed with this track and R.A.E.
TROPICS - Foolie $urfin, Jus Lovehall, Master Soul Boy
WHERE: ‘Dangerous’ was on heavy rotation for me at one point, and this feels like the pt. 2 to that track. WHY: In LOVE with the contrast between Foolie $urfin & Jus Lovehall’s vocals on these songs - both uniquely float over these beats with ease.
Ride or Die - kristina alcordo
WHERE: heard about kristina through a couple of different people & been meaning to have one of her tracks on here for a minute. WHY: I know I said I was tryna go for more up-beat vibes, but you know I had to sneak in at least one sultry R&B joint in there. I’ve heard all the tracks that kristina has up right now, and every single one hits, but her ‘Soul & Mine EP’ stands out to me because of how cohesive it is. Every song sounds like it was recorded on a single track, creating a really intimate listening experience, perfectly fitting to the title of the album.
‘I thought I didn’t have the time to pause The earths too fast paced for my heart You came around and slowed down time And nothing else matters Nothing else matters’
Midnight Special - Psychic Mirrors
WHERE: my favorite playlist, HB Weekly WHY: Psychedelic/funk/jazz, this sound is unlike anything I’ve ever heard done before.

Close To Me - Juls, Agent Sasco (Assassin), WizKid, JAEL
WHERE: Was going through JAEL’s profile on Spotify recently and realized I had just found out about this new Juls album that came out in October. WHY: This song is such a great opener to Juls’ ‘Sounds of My World’ album, which is for sure in my top 5 favorite albums this year. The mixes on this record are perfectly done, and there isn’t one bad song on the project. ‘Close To Me’ starts very reminiscent of a 90s R&B song and then mixes it up into a laid-back, feel-good afrobeat joint, which also feels symbolic for the project as a whole, mixing the genre in a variety of soothing & unpredictable ways.
Lose Control - Amaria
WHERE: IG Story - Andre Power (@andrepower) WHY: Sexy & enchanting, Amaria’s voice over this beat is mesmerizing and feels like falling in love; just hypnotic neo-soul.
stilluhme - Knxwledge
WHERE: n/a WHY: Dying to know what vocal sample is used here because the sentiment shared becomes that much more emotional when looped here.
“We grew up grew apart. Do you still love me?”
Feelin’ You - Donell Jones
WHERE: IG Story - Sahar Habibi (@saharrhabibi) WHY: Was thrown off by this beat initially after hearing the iconic Accordion loop used in ‘Madvillain’ but this track has been enlivening me ever since I first played it.
Find You (New Jerusalem) - Peter Cottontale
WHERE: ‘CATCH’ may be the most featured album I’ve included on PLAY IT BY EAR, and I definitely feel like it’s justified. The album came out during a time when I felt like we needed it the most, so when I (surprisingly) heard this at a party a few weeks ago, I was more than excited. WHY: Feel-good Gospel music that also works when you’re lit. What’s not to love about it?
Cashmere Tears - Kojey Radical
WHERE: adidas London running playlist WHY: Been meaning to find a spot for this track for a long time now. G-Funk meets UK rap, such a fun joint & I’ve never heard anything like it.
Mente Positiva - Junior H
WHERE: The homie ap (@apeightyone) showed me this one while we were eating with Hector a few months ago, describing it as cartel music lmao. WHY: Definitely can see the cartel vibes here lol, but I’m all about it. It’s easy for me to envision playing this track while driving through the desert, during sunset & the lyrics (when translated, I can’t speak Spanish lol) are beautiful and reflective.
And We Go Gentle - Hiatus Kaiyote
WHERE: my favorite track from Hiatus Kaiyote’s most recent album WHY: The groove on this track HITS like no other for me, and Nai Palm’s vocals here are more insane than ever. I can barely describe how much love I have for this song.

You’ve Changed - lophiile
WHERE: Soulection Timeless Sounds 10 Year Mix from my bro @andrepower WHY: The builds, peaks, and flows on this track really stand out to me and create real emotional journey.
Therapy - Mac Miller
WHERE: ran back ‘Faces’ after it got re-released on all streaming platforms recently WHY: Mac is iconic for so many reasons, but his feel-good, hype bag is one of my favorite lanes he gets in.
Oxygen - CARRTOONS
WHERE: ‘Something About You’ is definitely in my top 5 tracks of 2021, which made me really tap into the rest of the CARRTOONS tapes. WHY: The whole ‘Upstate’ tape is filled with laid back beats to vibe out to just like this one.
Too much sun in LA - McClenney, CHIKA
WHERE: Randomly tapped into McClenney’s discography and realized he just dropped an amazing project called ‘On A Virgo Mind’ WHY: This track shares a pretty common (and sad) experience a lot of people living in LA have, whether you’re from LA or not. People’s plans seem to happen out of convenience, intentional or not, and that’s just how it’s like sometimes unfortunately.
Whateva U Need - Grimm Lynn
WHERE: my bro Drake @drakegreen sent me this one the other day WHY: An amazingly written modern neo-soul track all about providing for someone you love. Absolutely my ideal vibe.
The Beauty Inside - Phora
WHERE: n/a WHY: I appreciate the message of this track a lot, even if applied outside of the context of a relationship. Sometimes what you see as flaws are what others perceive as beauty, so work on embracing all of it.
Count The Ways - Slum Village, Dwele
WHERE: Slum Village is always in rotation for me when I don’t know what else to listen to. WHY: An underrated Slum Village track, considering the catchy flows & hook. The ringing synths throughout give it a really futuristic feel.
Sugar Rush - Mei
WHERE: You guys already know the PLAY IT BY EAR love for Mei is real. WHY: Mei’s back again but this time in a groovy pop lane I’ve never heard him try before, but absolutely kills it in nonetheless. Everything here is catchy af, but that flow in the pre-chorus is it for me.

Wake Up - The Still Brothers, Marina B
WHERE: n/a WHY: Marina B’s singing here is mesmerizing, and the sample they incorporate throughout the track just fit those pockets in the beat so perfectly. Simply jazzy & psychedelic goodness.
Ggardenn - Mndsgn, Pink Siifu
WHERE: After riding off the high of Mndsgn’s last album ‘Rare Pleasure,’ I’ve delved into his discography a few times since. With Pink Siifu, I remember being in the record section of Tsutaya Bookstore in Japan when I saw his album cover for ‘ensley’ and immediately saved it to my library. WHY: For me, this track captures the hypnotic and euphoric moment of realizing you’re falling in love. I can totally see it being used as the soundtrack to a romantic scene in a movie.
Your body is a reflection, your smile is a reflection of love, love, love
My Bella - Benjiflow, Oxlade
WHERE: IG Story - @marymegahy (who’s also been posting the most fire memes lately) WHY: Another smooth afrobeat love song.
Stellar - Jamila Woods
WHERE: A close and iconic friend of mine, Kelly An, was playing this song on the car ride home from the Isaiah Rashad concert we went to 2 weeks ago. WHY: It’s funny how I keep expecting a drum section to come in at some point in this track, but it never does. Nonetheless, it’s perfectly produced, and Jamila with the guitar (and light use of hi-hats at the end) makes for a really cute song.
Truly Yours - Eric Bellinger, Dom Kennedy, The Game
WHERE: IG Story - @hyvivian WHY: I recently thought about how I listen to a ton of this kind of west coast R&B all the time, yet rarely ever include it on these playlists. This track features 3 legendary LA artists who I grew up listening to at different points in my life, so it was only right to give it some light.
Everyday - Neptunes Remix - Angie Stone, Pusha T
WHERE: @N8 showed me this track the last time I was in SF. WHY: It’s insane how often I’ll randomly come across a Neptunes remix that I’ve never heard before or how often I’ll hear a song that I never knew was produced by The Neptunes, and it happens with both newer and older artists.
Luvaroq - Elujay, serpentwithfeet
WHERE: Known about elujay for a minute, but recently went back to his music after the TOMBOGO ‘Nature is Healing’ show. WHY: Both Elujay & serpentwithfeet have such great verses on this track, and the overall feel they’ve captured here is like a modern reggae track. Such a relatable experience they’re singing about on the hook.
I'm not one to waste your time Is it too much to ring your line? Yeah You roll a likkle spliff while you read my signs (Yeah) That woman is Jah, she can bless my mind, yeah
Always - Panama (Classixx Remix)
WHERE: Was in Nebraska 2 weeks ago for a work trip (lol) and heard this track at a bar. WHY: This track has a very specific groove to it that I rarely get to tap into on these playlists, but I spend a lot of time listening to it as well. It really just reminds me of college and hanging out with a very specific group of friends. Feel good, music festival music.

Original Classic - Keys N Krates, Chip, Marbl, Juicy J
WHERE: IG story - @ashlayyy_alba WHY: Refreshing to a hear a new joint from Keys N Krates. This track is also the first time I’ve ever heard Juicy J on a house/dance track that wasn’t a flip. Got heavy Kaytra vibes on this one.
Paloma - Alpha P
WHERE: Soulection Radio #520 by Andres Uribe WHY: Considering how much afrobeat has blown up in the past couple of years, it’s insane that this track came out in 2019 and I barely found out about it now. This track has the potential to instantly get the dance floor moving at any club in LA or NY easily.
Paw Patrol - Michael Sneed
WHERE: IG Story - @p_lo WHY: As usual, there’s a ton of talent coming out of Oakland and the whole Bay Area that’s being pretty slept on in the hip hop/R&B space and expands beyond what most people consider as the typical ‘bay area’ sound. This track does a lot without doing too much and Michael Sneed’s flow fully carries throughout.
On Me - Tony Shhnow, 10dunkin
WHERE: Came up on random Spotify queue WHY: This sound is still hugely underground right now within the greater context of rap/hip hop, but I can totally see its potential to takeover (first got put on by FLEE and StoopidXOOL’s album ‘XOOL SUMMER’ in 2019). Hearing rappers flow this smoothly over a 90s R&B instrumental is the sound I never knew I needed this badly.
This Bed - Alicia Keys
WHERE: IG Story - @_futurejames WHY: I’m not sure how accurate this actually is, but for some reason, I get big 80s vibes from this track (think of some of Whitney Houston’s bigger dance records). I’ve never heard Alicia Keys on such a fun Instrumental like this, but I wish we had more of it.
GPS - Lege Kale
WHERE: Had time to go through all my old SoundCloud reposts during my road trip and re-discovered this banger WHY: The beat drop on this one goes so hard - I would love to put this in a set one day.
So Cold - Tkay Maidza
WHERE: IG Post - @whoisumi WHY: Tkay has been on my radar for a while, and it’s been great to see her evolution as an artist. She’s got a ton of charisma and natural charm to her, which is easy to hear on ‘So Cold.’
Say That - Toro y Moi
WHERE: Heard this track live at Second Sky fest a few weeks ago and was absolutely VIBING with Soohoo and Chubbs WHY: All I’ve got to say is that Toro made a real banger here. When that vocal chop comes in, I go absolutely nuts.

Change Ways - Memmi, Linus Hablot, Luke Bar$, Te’Von
WHERE: I met Memmi when we were both still at USC through the homie OJ (@imjustoj), but saw Austin post this track last week after Memmi dropped his EP ‘Heartburn.’ WHY: Deeply emotional track about the nature of change in everything. In love with the pulsating beat and the way all four artists incorporate their own unique flows over it. The theme they’re getting at here is everything to me.
Can’t Believe It - Matt Martians
WHERE: The Internet is one of my favorite bands, so I’m always following whatever projects their individual members have going on. This is the opening track off Matt’s recent album ‘Going Normal.’ WHY: Matt’s role within the overall production of The Internet has been contributing a psychedelic touch and more playful elements to their music. This track fully captures that sound along with another message that feels fully relevant to the themes of change.
I've found a light that shines in me You won't take an L from me Found a light that shines the best (A light that shines the best) Maybe we could press the Reset button on our lives
How It Feels - Sam Wise
WHERE: n/a WHY: This beat gives me Pierre/Carti vibes, but Sam Wise’s flow provides an added layer of depth that makes it a bit more contemplative as well as fun.
Only One - Kanye West, Paul McCartney
WHERE: Played this song during the roadtrip while we were in the middle of a reflective chat and will now forever associate this song with that moment. WHY: This track was written by Kanye through the lens of the spirit of his mom, Donda West. In it, she wants Kanye to know that no matter what he’s going through, she’s always there for him in spirit, and good days are promised no matter what. When I think about what it means to be a mother, I think this is what the main goal is - to let their kids know that they are protected in spirit, whether or not they can feel it physically,
Accidental Meetings - Chaos in the CBD
WHERE: Joe Kay’s ‘Workout Flow’ playlist. WHY: Hypnotizing modern-jazz track with enchanting vocals. Feels like I’m losing myself in a beautiful void whenever I play this one.
To The Moon - Rob Curly
WHERE: Nat sent this in our music group chat (s/o N8 and Jon as well). WHY: Fun and easy listening trap that reminds me a lot of madeintyo.
Pleasantville - Jozzy
WHERE: n/a WHY: I’m completely in love with the hook here. The way the vocals are produced creates a sound that aligns fully with the psychedelic vibes I’ve been playing a lot of recently. The type of music to just lay down on the grass in the shade and zone out to.
Sweetness - Dub Mix by Andras
WHERE: n/a WHY: A beautiful and simple track that immediately puts me in a reflective state.

Good Lovin - JAMMY, Hokage Simon, BxRod
WHERE: been hearing a ton about JAMMY through my homies in the bay for a while now. The boy Kiko (@_kikovalle) did his thing on the video too. WHY: Sexy and smooth R&B/house joint that feels perfect to bump before a chic night out. Elegant sounds.
Be Thankful For What You’ve Got - Lucky Daye, Big Freedia, BJRNCK
WHERE: The homie Matt (@matthewsherman) showed me this one night at his crib. WHY: Every now and then, Lucky Daye will drop a track featuring a sound that’s different than anything I’ve heard him try before, which is one of the things I appreciate most about him as an artist. ‘Be Thankful For What You’ve Got’ is a feel good track that does just that.
IRLMB - Peyton
WHERE: Had Peyton on my last playlist and haven’t stopped bumping her album ‘PSA’ ever since. WHY: ‘PSA’ highlights Peyton as a naturally dynamic artist, writing about traditional themes of love (like here on ‘IRLMB’) as well as touching upon self love and validation. For me ‘IRLMB’ captures the emotion of fluttering feelings experienced easily strictly off the idea of someone you’re in love with.
Wanna Be Your Lover - mtbird
WHERE: Bryce Sexton’s (@brycesexton) Rinse & Repeat playlist for The Kollection. WHY: Groovy and upbeat flip of a classic Marvin Gaye joint. Doesn’t get much better than that.
Waiting On You - Two Another
WHERE: Was chilling at the pool of Hotel Figueroa with Wev (@worldwidewev) about a month ago, although I remember discovering Two Another a while back toward the end of the SoundCloud era. WHY: Two Another’s production skills have always stood out to me the most. Their recipe has always been minimal, electronic beats + great songwriting that seems to perfectly encapsulate a lot of the ‘bedroom artist’ sound of the late 2000s.
Sweet One - Wizkid
WHERE: Revisited Wizkid’s ‘Made In Lagos’ album recently after his recent release of the deluxe edition. WHY: Of course at this point, we know ‘Essence’ is this song of the summer without a doubt, but when it comes to tracks that capture that deep sense of love, Wizkid has so much more to offer in this lane. Perfect vibe for those late night drives with your love. Say, in the morning, 'dey my mind But my love for you pass this life (oh woah woah) Wine up til morning, oh yeah (Woah woah woah, yeah) I've been needing your love
HEAVEN - Jason Dhakal, LUSTBASS
WHERE: Long overdue that I featured another Jason Dhakal track, my favorite artist off 88Rising’s Filipino sub-label, Paradise Rising. WHY: ‘HEAVEN’ is exactly that psychedelic R&B vibe that I seek out when I listen to Miguel’s earlier albums, as well as a lot of material off Frank Ocean’s ‘blonde.’ Trippy love music that matches the vibe of being out in nature with someone you love, which is what I imagine Heaven is probably most literally like anyways.
boston - boylife
WHERE: boylife is another artist I’ve featured recently, whose music I’m completely obsessed with. WHY: ‘boston’ is a stripped down ballad, which is an area where I feel like boylife really shines, despite his current public discography only being a few tracks. While it’s a pretty straight forward track, this hits that raw emotional spot that I always seek with any artist and in my opinion, a perfect way to close out this week’s list.

Let It Flow - Peyton, Brice Blanco
WHERE: came up using the Spotify ‘Song Radio’ feature WHY: My M.O. lately has been ‘let go and let shit be.’ Most of the time, I identify stress as a result of me overthinking things -- from creative work to me regretting a poor decision I made. This track speaks directly with a solution for that.
It's hard to live alone Creeps in my head If I can escape my mind It'll be alright Oh, time to let it go Oh, just let it flow
Suckaz - Phillyz Most Wanted
WHERE: Dre (@andrepower) showed me this group last week while we were talking about the early 2000s era of The Neptunes. WHY: I’ve always found it interesting to learn about artists that used to work closely with some of the best producers of their time but didn’t get to have their moment, especially when we’re talking about it through the lens of producers like The Neptunes. This track could’ve easily been just as big as any Clipse or N.O.R.E. record. Despite them lacking commercial success, this song still hits hard.
Getting High - SAIYON (Hagan Remix)
WHERE: Soulection Radio WHY: The best type of tracks for me are ones that occupy the space between turning up and chilling. This remix by HAGAN is a perfect example of that. SAIYON’s vocals here remind me a ton of artists like Aluna, Tinashe, NAO, etc., which made me think about the fact that there’s a certain tonal quality that thrives within the pop/electronic space.
FEELS SO GOOD TO SMILE - ROMderful
WHERE: Was looking for some feel-good beats the other day and came across this whole tape by ROMderful. WHY: The title of this track is completely accurate for the vibe this song is able to create. I know it can sound corny, but a lot of the content I’ve consumed within the mindfulness & Buddhism space mentioned the subtle positive effect that purposely smiling (even if just slightly) can have on your mood, especially during meditation practice.
Freedom - Rasharn Powell
WHERE: DJ Agana’s ‘Recharge’ Mix WHY: An amazing love song with a perfect instrumental and vocal work (produced by Gianluca Buccellati, who’s worked closely with artists like Arlo Parks, Tei Shi, and more). Something about this hook is just PERFECT to me. I’m addicted to it.
Please Love Me Again - Liam Bailey
WHERE: n/a WHY: It’s really rare for me these days to come across a straight acoustic vocal track that I truly love, but when I do, it def strikes a deep chord for me since my earliest days of obsessing over music come from this genre. I get a mixture of Bob Marley, Leon Bridges, and Bakar from this song in particular, which is interesting considering all three of those artists debuted at significantly different times.
Babe Truth - Gabe Duran
WHERE: n/a WHY: Another track addressing the topic of letting go and surrendering to a feeling. It feels like she could be speaking directly to a lover or to the benefit of living this way in general. I used to hate not having the exact meaning of things explained to me, but as I’ve gotten older, I find myself so much more satisfied when things are left up to interpretation. Come find me All timing Is divinely in alignment And all I can do is my And all I can do is my best
Cloudy June - Silas Short
WHERE: HB Weekly WHY: Such a smooth modern neo-soul joint by an artist who I’m really curious to know more about. Felt like the smoothest way to close out a week that feels like the most sporadic playlist that I’ve put together in a while.

Got a pretty mixed bag of tracks in here this week -- pretty reflective of where my energy has been lately (all over the place). Nonetheless, I chose songs that hit different parts of me while still tryna get into a flow. Lastly, thank you again to Drake Green for taking over PLAY IT BY EAR 039, glad to have you in my corner! Much love y’all.

Oh Word - Ivan Ave
WHERE: Ivan Ave has been on my radar since hearing some of his early tracks with mndsgn a few years back, but I recently rediscovered this ‘Seasons In Jakarta’ mixtape in my iTunes library. WHY: Had no clue Ivan created more vibey tracks since everything else I’ve heard by him is fully rap. I interpret this track to be about allowing yourself to be proven wrong, which can end up giving you a greater sense of freedom.
More Than That - Ferraz, Alissa Maria
WHERE: Above Ordinary Mix Episode 06 by DJ Wegun WHY: Fun dance track with vocals that I find really interesting (she’s definitely not a great singer in the traditional sense). Reminds me a ton of a more pop-y ABRA song.
Moesh - Lex Amor, DIPS, Lo-Wu
WHERE: n/a WHY: This song takes me back to the lo-fi electronic beats I used to listen to at the end of high school/early college (comedown music).
Pharaoh - RAS
WHERE: HB Weekly WHY: This past year, psychedelic jazz/neo-soul/r&b (e.g., Khrurangbin, Hiatus Kaiyote, BADBADNOTGOOD) has been the go-to genre whenever I’m in a serious workflow. This song fits right into that lane of chill-trip music.
Baby, This Love I Have - Minnie Riperton
WHERE: sampled in ‘Check The Rhime - ATCQ’ WHY: Aside from the instrumental (which created that loop used in the ‘Check The Rhime’ beat,) I love how dramatic Minnie’s vocals are in this track. You definitely don’t hear too many artists taking it to that place anymore.
I Feel Best When I’m Alone - Michael Seyer
WHERE: n/a WHY: This is the theme song for all the single people out there tryna love themselves a little more (or for introverts lol). The irony is that this song very much feels (instrumental wise) like it could be a perfect love song to slow dance with someone to. And if you think there's something wrong You need to take a stroll Relax your own self
Alcohol - SAULT
WHERE: SAULT has been one of my favorite groups of the past year. Their music helped me out A LOT in processing what was going on in the world post-George Floyd’s murder. WHY: This is the perfect hangover track, especially when you’re in your feels, knowing you’ve made some mistakes after a night of drinking.
Woah! There’s No Limit - Lord Echo, Mara TK
WHERE: Discovered Lord Echo earlier this year and ‘The Sweetest Meditation’ has been one of my favorite songs ever since. WHY: Like much of Lord Echo’s discography, this track releases all of the feel-good chemicals. Its rare to find songs that can bring that energy, and still manage to be down tempo/lo-fi, yet Lord Echo executes this easily on every track.

First off, I wanna thank Kev for giving me the chance to take over this week’s Play It By Ear. Always been a pleasure to talk music and share music w/ you. I just wanted to put together a few songs that I’ve been vibing w/ lately and hopefully there’s some new tunes for ppl to add to their music library. If ppl add at least one song then I feel I did my job :).

Witchoo - Durand and the Indications feat. Witchoo
WHERE: I have been following this group for some time now and ironically I just found this song while searching for music for this playlist. They have an album dropping this Friday so i’d you enjoy this, pls tap in
WHY: I just feel this is a great way to start the vibes. w/ everything going on w/ this pandemic, etc. we need some light in our life. and this feels as such. Hope you enjoy the start of this curation.
Chance - Juls, Projexx, & Tay Iwar
WHERE: Afro Beat Music playlist on apple music
WHY: When I first heard this song it moved me in a lot of ways. I was actually on my way to one of my good friends Dejon’s wedding and it made me feel great to play music like this that was light hearted as well free flowing. I actually had this on repeat for a second on my drive. maybe you will too!? if not, that’s okay lol.
Magnolias - Leon Bridges
WHERE: apple music
WHY: so, I played this album last week and this was a clear stand out to me. I felt different when this song came on and I enjoyed it immediately. I felt it embodied everything I’d enjoy from an R&B song mixed w/ heavy 808s. I’m also a fan of Leon Bridges! What’s funny is my family Bam (@obamjr.o aka Mark Samuels) put this on his story the other day and it was dope to know we shared the same excitement over this song.
Wat U Sed - Isaiah Rashad feat. Iamdoechii, Kal Banxx
WHERE: One of my good friend’s Erin (@erinpepper) sent this to me last week. We share a lot of music and she has expanded my music library immensely this year. Thank you for the tunes!
WHY: I wanted to include some rap/hip hop and hoped ppl enjoy. Also, his album drops this week so go tap in if you like it.
ON MY MIND - Snoh Aalegra feat. James Fauntleroy
WHERE: apple music
WHY: I felt this song embodies a lot of emotions we go through over someone that had a special place in our lives. It not only helps you grow but for those ppl who leave a lasting impact in our lives, we tend to always think about them “in my mind, it ain’t over though it’s over”. So, thank you to those ppl who come along in our journey of life and teach us valuable lessons.
Puerto Rico - IDK
WHERE: Honestly, I was anticipating this album. So this is on ya boy lol
WHY: This has great energy. IDK is actually a friend of mine and I think he’s a great artist. i think this song embodies his range. However, i’m all about R&B so i wanted make sure you were enjoyed this vibe and maybe it’ll enhance one of your evenings before the summer comes to a close
Tired of You - Yung Bleu feat. H.E.R.
WHERE: apple music this just came out last week lol
WHY: I’m basically slowing the whole playlist all the way down now. also, fun fact... I know the engineer Nate (@nathansounds) who has been working w/ Yung Bleu for this album and he expressed that the artist comes up w/ each concept with no lines fed to him. how impressive? I thought this song was not only smooth but something to resonate w/. when you’re passionate about someone special but something just isn’t clicking... i think they did a great job executing this type of situation.
Slowdance - Mndsgn
WHERE: I absolutely don’t know
WHY: I felt for my eighth and final song... I wanted to have something smooth and super chill to close out. when i first heard this song it definitely felt good to me and i think it’s something you can enjoy by yourself or w/ that special someone 😉
also, Dame’s album drops next month 😤

Sunrise - Kevitch
WHERE: Random Spotify Queue
WHY: Everything about this track screams warmth and vibrance, perfectly matching the energy of a sunrise. Very little is known about Kevitch, only having this one song out (which has millions of plays) and one article about her by GQ in 2016, but what I know for sure is that she perfectly embodies the word ‘elegance’ in her art, both visually and audibly.
So what if i feel to much So what if i say too much
Only One - DJ Rashad, Spinn, Taso
WHERE: Joe Kay’s ‘Workout Flow’ playlist.
WHY: It’s rare to come across beats that make use of glitchy rhythms like this and still feel listenable. Usually, these types of sample chops can get exhausting for me, but this track does a smooth job at it. I love that it feels appropriate for me to play either while working out or just chillin at the crib.
Snow White - Roy Woods
WHERE: Recently rediscovered this track through my likes on SoundCloud and forgot how chill it was.
WHY: That synth melody used throughout the beat is just so addictive and smooth to me; it could pass for a children’s lullaby if you removed the 808s and Roy singing about what he’s singing about lol.
Never Too Much - Derrick Cross
WHERE: IG Story - Jamie Strong (@jamiestrong)
WHY: Like most 90s babies, the original version of this song is one that I’ve heard throughout my life in different settings, from family parties to the club (come to think of it, a playlist full of these types of tracks would be a great idea). I’ve also heard this song covered numerous times before, but never as a reggae version so to hear it approached in this way is something I’m really in love with.
dio - boylife
WHERE : s/o Kelly Clancy for putting me onto boylife
WHY: boylife is probably my favorite new artist I’ve discovered in 2021. As you guys already know, I’m a pretty emotional person when it comes to music (I love ‘feelsy’ shit), and boylife’s current discography is full of tracks that take me to that place. ‘dio’ is a beautiful track that expresses the feeling of yearning for a past love.
I've been dreamin' of your back Won't you come and take me back? I've been dreamin' of your neck Kissin' on you 'til we fall back asleep now
Eternal - Jenevieve
WHERE: Found out about Jenevieve through @sleepingongems. Her visuals (particularly for ‘Medallion’) were what drew me in initially, but the music is equally as great.
WHY: Like much of Jenevieve’s music, 'Eternal’ feels extremely hypnotic for me. It’s a love song that feels almost chaotic yet still manages to draw my focus on her emotion & lyrics.
Dangerous Love - Tiwa Savage
WHERE: Kronika’s Timeless Sounds Mix
WHY: Not sure why, but that part where she’s singing (I wanna call this the bridge), “I’m deep, I’m deep in love with you,” is so addictive to me.
Verify - Jacquees, Young Thug, Gunna
WHERE: In my top 3 favorite Jacquees songs.
WHY: What I love most about artists like Jacquees is that they remind me of the music I grew up listening to. The way all three of them switch off each other’s flows in that first verse is just hella smooth, & I also think Gunna thrives when he’s rapping over beats like this. Its the perfect soundtrack for driving around with your special ting.
Yes I love your physical but its your energy

A few weeks ago, I took a much needed trip to Hawaii with a few of my best friends. In a lot of ways, the trip felt like a spiritual one and validated a lot of different themes I’ve been vocal about over the past year through PLAY IT BY EAR. This week’s newsletter/playlist is meant to serve as my reflection on that week.

Nature's Joint - ((( O )))
WHERE: One of the highlights (if not the main one) was hearing this song after my friend Tiff requested we play it during the sunset of our ‘trippiest’ day. I’ve played this song dozens of times since then and still find myself able to channel what I felt in that exact moment sitting on the rooftop (seen in this week’s coverart) with my friends.
WHY: ‘Nature’s Joint’ begins with a passage about grains of sand and how they know their purpose and seek nothing more, which ties back to a Buddhist principle I’ve written about before. Peace is available to all of us when we let go of our expectations for what ‘should be’ and find joy in the moment that exists right in front of us. Following this passage is a long ambient section, building up to an epic finale that sounds like the feeling of finally arriving at that place of peace. I love how much tension is built throughout the track and how you almost feel lost through most of it until the end, and you realize that you’ve arrived.
...don't forget the grain of sand that hold there secrets They know exactly why they're here Without the words they don't need or have They see it clear without eyes to steer themselves in the rubble No sense of nerves but a vibrant consciousness that happens without fear Stay near to the point of nature's joint
REACH - LUCASV, Blibli, Zaire
WHERE: Above Ordinary Mix Ep. 03 (Didi Han)
WHY: Probably the most chill house song I’ve heard in a long time, and the verse by LUCASV adds the perfect cherry on top.
Time’s a Wastin’ - Erykah Badu
WHERE: This may come as a surprise to a lot of people, but I didn’t really listen to Erykah Badu till about 4 years ago. This is one of my favorite tracks by her.
WHY: Every time I listen to this song, I feel like I’m having a comforting conversation with my mom (or anyone older than me that cares for and seeks to guide me). Aside from how smooth this beat is, I love her honesty about life here. We live in a difficult world and only have a limited amount of time in it. Why waste time in uncertainty?
timing - williamvanzandt, Johnny Chais
WHERE: The homie Ben Buckley put me on to williamvanzandt a while back.
WHY: This track is named so perfectly - the beat is in no rush to arrive at any place and feels like the soundtrack to a phase of transition.
Where Is Love - The Equatics?
WHERE : n/a
WHY: I love that this track explores the feeling of not knowing what ‘love’ actually is. Everyone talks about ‘love’ and describes it in so many different ways, but my trip showed me that it’s most easily seen through sacrifice.
On My Way. - Lord’s Child, Madison Ryann Ward, Montell Fish
WHERE: I heard this song a while back after falling in love with Madison Ryann Ward (her vocals are sooooo good), but during my trip, I spent a couple of mornings talking about scripture and listening to Gospel music with my brrrruhhhther Daniel.
WHY: I grew up in the Catholic faith and one thing I love most about Christianity is how unapologetically it’s believers will proclaim their faith through different means (e.g., service, scripture, music, etc.,). While on paper I don’t necessarily identify as ‘Christian’ any more, I still feel like I understand the faith at a deep level and have held onto my unwavering belief in God and his will.
Thank God I Made It - Benny the Butcher, Queen Naija
WHERE: Loved this album when it came out, but found a whole new appreciation for this song after riding around to it the other week after a night out with the boys.
WHY: I love that this song is about overcoming life’s challenges and giving it all up to the glory of God. Tracks like these (rap music with soul beats that feel like you just completed a marathon) will always have a deeply rooted spot in my heart. The hook is my favorite part of the song, but Hit Boy mentioned in an interview that Benny was crying in the studio when he recorded the verses. This was one of my favorite songs to blast hella loud while driving down the highway in Hawaii.
Colours of the Sunset - Mndsgn
WHERE: When I got back home to LA, Mndsgn dropped this album, and thematically, the whole project tied perfectly into my experience of that past week.
WHY: Another track with a perfect title to match. The sunsets I saw there hit different than any I’ve ever experienced, especially the one I mentioned at the beginning of this newsletter. If we give ourselves the patience to wait for it, we’ll find the peace we’ve been looking for right in front of us; just give it some time and you can find it in the sunset.
I see you growin' tired of your fears So am I How could you lose your mind over there? When the love in your arms is always here

Damn - Arin Ray
WHERE: not sure but, the first Arin Ray track I ever remember hearing was ‘We Ain’t Homies’ back in 2017.
WHY: The production on this track is what I love the most. There’s a dreamlike quality to it that makes it feel fitting for the opening or closing of a mix, album, or even movie.
Lottery - Kali Uchis
WHERE: I’ll never forget driving around to this song on a sunny ass day in San Francisco with N8 a few years back.
WHY: Been listening to Kali Uchis for a while now & it makes me happy to see how much she’s evolved artistically. When I listen to this song, I’m reminded of the early days of her career when her music was a lot brighter and more playful.
Take Me to Your Planet - Lil Halima
WHERE: n/a
WHY: What’s not to like about a space-themed love song?
Mermaid - Alan Hawkshaw, Brian Bennett
WHERE: n/a
WHY: Felt like this song transitioned well out of the last one mainly because of the trippy synth melody throughout the track. Love the minimal beat (especially the bongos) and playful keys. Every instrument feels very isolated yet adds to the whole sound so completely
Soon I’ll Be Loving You Again - Marvin Gaye
WHERE: n/a
WHY: Again, another song that just felt right as a transition from the last (probably the bongos again lol). This is a pretty underrated Marvin Gaye track IMO; the instrumentation is beautifully done and feels really danceable.
Come Correct - Blimes Brixton, Gifted Gab
WHERE: random Spotify Queue
WHY: First heard about Gifted Gab through the adidas London playlist and was blown away. It’s just really refreshing to hear female rappers over a boom-bap beat doing that ‘Real Hip Hop,’ aka talking their shit and spitting for real. Reminds me a ton of Lauryn Hill circa Fugees era.
Your Mind - Didi Han, JADE
WHERE: Above Ordinary Mix Ep. 03 (Didi Han)
WHY: This sound (dreamy female vocals over a 4/4 beat) will always have a special place in my heart because of my friends. I remember not getting it for the longest time until riding around in the car to this sound with a very specific group (Lisa, Ryan, and Chen). Its really just a great late night upbeat driving vibe.
After Storms - LUSTBASS
WHERE: The opening track of the last playlist, ‘Body & Soul’ (which might be one of my favorite tracks I’ve ever included on PIBE), was produced by LUSTBASS.
WHY: Majority of the instrumentals I’ve been listening to these days are more jazz/hip hop based so this track caught my ear immediately. Bonus points that LUSTBASS is Filipino since the majority of the producers I listen to in this space are from NAM or Europe.

In managing this brand over the past year and a half or so, I’ve learned a ton about the ups and downs of the creative process especially as it relates to creating (&curating) the most honest expression of yourself.
In general I’m a pretty upbeat person. I love being out, being with people, and listening to music that makes me feel good. When I first came up with the idea of PLAY IT BY EAR at the end of 2019, I created it thinking I would only be sharing music that reflected that representation of myself. I quickly discovered since then, however, that I couldn’t do that while feeling the way I felt -- it would’ve been dishonest and out of touch.
Instead of these playlists being curated mainly from place of introspection (and frequent existential crises lol), I’m stoked that it finally feels right to start sharing music that comes from a place where I feel my best. Love to you today and always.

Body & Soul - Jason Dhakal
WHERE: Found out about Jason Dhakal while researching 88Rising’s sub label, Paradise Rising, which strictly focuses on highlighting Filipino talent.
WHY: This has to be my favorite song I’ve heard in the past half a year -- no b.s. To me, this track is the ‘Adorn’ of 2020/2021, and it’s coming from a Filipino artist, so you know I have to ride that much harder for it. All the best elements of a love song are found in this track.
Incoming Freestyle - Likkle Jordee
WHERE: n/a
WHY: Lately, this has been my go-to afrobeat track for when I’m tryna feel good. I love how he (Likkle Jordee) references the difficulty of this past year as a way to motivate himself and keep the vibes right.
Sparkwun - IAMNOBODI
WHERE: Recently been listening through IAMNOBODI’s tapes after he released ‘The Interludes EP.’
WHY: Thought this track flowed perfectly after the last two. This song samples two different songs: Greg Perry - Come Fly With Me & Super Beagle - Dust a Sound (which most of you probably know from Kanye’s Mercy). These are two really different samples but are fused perfectly together to create a sound that rides the border of aggressive and smooth seamlessly.
No Pressure - Drew Howard, Birthday Boy
WHERE: n/a
WHY: Appreciate the contrast Drew Howard gives us between his delivery on the chorus and the verses. On the hook, his vocals are pretty raspy and full of reverb (reminding me of Brandon Banks), while his flow on the verses brings out a more confident side in his delivery (similar to early Big Sean stuff).
Oidar - Hether
WHERE: Not sure who I first found out about Hether from, but they’ve come up for me in a variety of different places.
WHY: Like most of Hether’s discography, this track is the cutest of lo-fi pop music. The hook on this track is my favorite. You’ve got no chance to bop a little bit when this song comes on.
If I Ever Lose This Heaven - Quincy Jones
WHERE: Delved into Quincy Jones’ discography a few months back and found this one.
WHY: I think it’s tight how vocals are brought in from so many different places throughout the track. Feels like I’m constantly being surprised at who’s gonna sing next and where the arrangement is gonna go. The verses are super minimal and then build into this pretty epic chorus. Rare to find production like this anymore. (also in love with this coverart)
You the One Fish in the Sea - Liv.e
WHERE: Been listening to Liv.e even more since I featured her on PLAY IT BY EAR 032.
WHY: Majority of the beats on this album are more in the jazz/lo-fi realm, which in a lot of music, makes it hard for me to follow what the vocalists are saying. Liv.e is a master however, at picking these types of beats and still keeping your attention on what she’s saying which in this case, is just really sweet.
My teeth all the way out , my smile real big now.. Please now baby, don’t you leave my side Please don’t drop me from the great big sky
Dopamine - Rvdical the Kid, Maesu
WHERE: random Spotify queue
WHY: Really glad this beat came on my radar because it’s so easy for me to remember whenever I’m blanking out on a feel good beat. Totally reminds me of the type of instrumentals I would gravitate towards during the SoundCloud era.
