Can I request a headcanon of whb king (plus any other characters you want) reacting to gn mc avoiding them for as long as she can because mc got dared to by some random demon
WHB kings' reaction to MC avoiding them because of a dare

A/N: Hi! This was so fun to write since each king had a completelly different reaction ^^ Sorry for the long wait though t-t

Oh, Satan doesn't like this at all
The moment he notices your suspiciously long absence, he's on the prowl
Where are you and why tf are you avoiding him?
He'll even send out Amy and his group to look for you and bring you to him
Hopefully he'll during his search find out about the dare
At least hopefully for you
Poor demon who dared you will find himself homeless after Satan in his demon form destroys his place
Once that's dealt with, the next time you go outisde, you come face to face with Satan, leaning back against his bike
"Talked to that mf. The dare's called off :)"

Mammon notices that you haven't been around him much, but he just chalks it up to you being busy
He's okay with it, knowing that eventually you'll come back to him anyway
Besides, if you needed something, you'd surely call him
After finding out that it's a dare, he's also curious how long you'll be able to keep away from him
If he ever gets worried about you, he'll just send one of his nobles to check up on you
Once you're back to him, he's taking you out for a dinner to congratulate you on how long you lasted
    ༺☆༻

Leviathan knew from the beginning thanks to Foras
You don't even get to leave the Hades castle so it's easier for you to avoid him when you get a message from the devil who dared you that the dare is off
It doesn't take a genius to realise that the poor demon had been visited by His Majesty himself and forced to end your dare early
Most likely, if you video-called with him, he'll be gasping for air, hung by a noose
The next time you see Leviathan, he acts like nothing happened, but you can feel his piercing stare when you're not looking at him
He's most likely not sure how to punish you yet...
But once he does...
Oh boy, now comes the moment to avoid him for the sole sake of your survival

Funny :)
You think you can avoid Beel? :)
I mean, technically you could do that by hanging around in the Abyssos castle, but even then you can't exactly avoid Beel
If Beel wants to see you, he'll come and see you
Doesn't matter where you are or what you're doing
Even if it means that he'll have to sneak through his own castle to escape Bael's wrath
And even more so, if he finds out about the dare...
Oops, he just reminded he meant to take you to this place and booked it in advance and can't cancel it
Sorry, guess you'll have to spend the whole month with him :)
I guess the rule with Beel is that the more you want him, the less he'll be around
(True story with my pulls for his cards tbh T-T)
    ༺☆༻
Tumblr media
Belphie would probably realise that it's been a while since you were there when he woke up, but eh...
Maybe you're just busy doing your work
No sweat
That is until Beleth accidentally slips up about the dare
Oh?
Now that is something different
Prepare to start dreaming about him every night
That'll eventually make you come back...
And if not, don't worry...
Belphie's ability can bring you back anytime, so enjoy your time away from him before he decides this little game is over
    ༺☆༻
Tumblr media
Keeping away from Asmo is honestly your day-to-day task, so I don't think there's much difference
That is until you realize that it's time for another annual king meeting
The real challenge becomes coming up with a good reason to excuse yourself from it
And all the nobles are helping you at this point
Sure, you could just not go, but Asmo might then leave the meeting to come and see you since he was so excited to meet you after so long
In the end Leviathan coems to save the day and hides you inside his coffin for as long as the need be
Phew
You're safe for another year
    ༺☆༻
Tumblr media
To Lucifer, not seeing you for a long time is a good thing
It just means you're healthy and safe
But he does eventually start to miss you
And then Gamigin talks a bit too much and mentions that you've been avoiding Paradise Lost because of a dare
So whenever you need medical assistance one of the nobles has to do a house call
...
A house call?
That sounds unsanitary
Who even knows what germs and bacteria you might catch
Lucifer better make his way over to you for a surprise visit to make sure you're doing well
And no apples can save you from this doctor

marylily but it's mary, watching lily from afar and wondering why she feels something she's never felt before.
mary clinging to Sirius like a lifeline even though she knows that she can never love him and he can never love her, because what else can she do?
Mary, kissing lily in a game of truth or dare and realising just how much she's always wanted to do that.
Mary and lily, after the party, alone in the corridor and kissing like they'll never stop, kissing so many times afterwards, even though mary has sirius and she knows that he should be enough.
mary, holding back tears as lily tells her they should stop- it's not right to lie to sirius and their friends, neither girl realising the other feels the same way, each believing the other was only with them as an experiment.
mary, loving lily, never stopping loving her even as lily falls out of love and tells mary about james- james who she likes, even though she's always hated him so much.
mary, always so supportive, because she'd do anything for lily, cheering her on even as her heart rips to shreds, watching she and james kiss like the girls never could- like sirius and remus will never be able to- so so jealous and angry but never angry at lily, because how could she ever be?
mary, barely remembering anything from before the fighting and the death, crying when she hears the news or her friends death, safe only in the knowledge that lily, her lily is still safe, even though they barely speak anymore, and all she has left of her are faded photographs and memories of soft lips and green eyes and kindness.
mary, hiding away- hating herself more and more each day for leaving the only people she ever loved behind, hating james and marlene and even sirius for fighting still, but never, ever hating lily.
mary, numb, so numb, crying and laughing and screaming when she hears the news. she can't even hate him- the man she loved like a brother, the man who made her feel like she wasn't alone, the man who turned out to be just like everything he tried to run from- because all she feels is empty, everything that held her to this earth gone in a flash of green. although, maybe not everything.
mary, running like her life depends on it, because it does really, scooping up the baby in her arms and refusing to look at the woman lying beside him, scared of how her love would look now that she can no longer smile, leaving the house and the man who claimed to love lily, but never did, not like mary could, and the man who did love her, but couldn't save her in the end.
mary, frantic as she runs, sobbing and broken into the arms of a man who watched as everyone she ever loved died, needing to cry out and hit but never doing so, because she couldn't spoil the baby like that, not when he was lily's.
mary, never again thinking of red hair and the smell of apple blossom, never again thinking of stars and records and magic, never again remembering the boy who lived, alive for his mother- the only one mary ever truly loved, never again really living, as the man muttered a spell and everything was forgotten as though it never meant a thing.
mary, who survived, unlike the rest, but who never truly breathed again, because how could she live without lily, without her warmth and light and beauty, without her memories.
mary, who lived longer than the rest, but died that night on halloween, as she was always meant to from the moment she fell in love.

Ep 22-23 Commentary
Ha...I was inexplicably nervous for eps 22-23 and it looks like I was right to be (-: What a rollercoaster. Spoilers below!
I've just come out of ep 23 and uh????? holy shit????? ZYC????
Ok ok but to backtrack, let's do my comments semi-chronologically:
Ep 22:
A carry-over from ep 21 that I have to mention—heck yeah PSJ give WZY hell. She doesn't have all that many lines but she sure knows how to make them count. Also seeing PSJ and WX get screen time just the two of them makes my brain go "yay <3"
Back to ep 22, loved the fake-out sundial ayeee that was a nice Chekhov's gun that also brings the real sundial back into relevance for later. Also me eating up the PSJ and ZYC crumb of an interaction has brought to my attention how starved I am of their screen time together.
This whole ep was a great lament towards the feared inevitable. Every sad downcast look from ZYC, every complicated glance WX gives him. A wonderful, terrible crossroads for these characters. I love that for ZYC especially, it's such an incredible mess of emotion coming to a head. Bad enough that he's come to care about the demon who killed his family and ruined his life, bad enough that he's sworn a blood oath he regrets and tied himself to punishing someone he no longer finds culpable, bad enough that ZYZ's life or death depends solely on his choice and ZYZ is constantly practically begging for death when ZYC wants him to live. How much immensely worse it makes the whole situation that WX is literally ZYZ's soulmate. And obviously the whole team has only grown more and more attached to ZYZ, too. ZYC's personal turmoil aside, how heavy must that responsibility and guilt be? For the finishing blow that only he can deliver to also deeply threaten every other person he cares about? Everyone understands in the abstract what must happen and why, but just like seeing ZYZ lose control firsthand, the gulf between understanding and experiencing is so unimaginably wide. If he kills ZYZ, can there really be no resentment from his friends? From WX?
Also it seems ZYC only wears cloaks so that he can give them to other people lmao
Ah fuck, the farewell drinks. I didn't even factor in how ZYC might not survive the encounter (''': The drama truly was like hm can we possibly give ZYC a worse day than that night his whole fam died? Maybe give him a bunch of new family members and also the blade and the fate and the sole responsibility to potentially irrevocably scar said family members with? And he might die in the process too? (-: haha maybe? (((-:
Oh. Oh. Addendum. I forgot this til I saw it mentioned in another post—ZYC recounting his oath as he watched WX smile when they discussed reviving the tree...I could feel him weighing those words against his own life, against ZYZ's life, against WX's happiness. One way out of this impossible situation is indeed to doom himself. I'm in pieces.
Damn if WX isn't dedicated heart and soul, going into the sundial like that. I'm sad no one could keep her company for those 300 years but also I guess that's kind of an impossible ask (and maybe not survivable for the other non-goddess mortals? I'm admittedly very unclear on sundial time loophole logistics). It would have been nice to see someone offer though, even just to be turned down.
Ooh I like the soul needle fake-out, given this show's penchant for retroactive "actually we had a plan all along" moments. A good subversion of the narrative's own style.
Also I saved this for the end because it doesn't really fit the linearity of my comments but what the fuuuuuuuck oh my god I absolutely flipped out at this scene:
Tumblr media
I am at once rabidly intrigued and at the same time not sure if I'll be satisfied with whatever payoff will come for this so I don't want to overindulge in theorizing and setting my own expectations too high. Maybe this is just a fevered hallucination, maybe it means nothing (I hope it means something). But damn!!! What a gorgeous man crazy scene.
In conclusion, ep 22 had some good stuff for me. Plot development and reflection and tension enough that I may have been satisfied with just that one episode. But they gave us two, so onward to ep 23 comments!
Ep 23:
I like how many solid reasons the team has to suspect ZYC being possessed. Even though I withheld judgment during my watch given how quickly the show usually confirms that kind of stuff with a possession mark, just simply casting that doubt made the whole build up that much more intense.
ZYC slowly walking down the corridor with the whole grounds lit a somber and haunting gold—*chef's kiss*
ZYC's monologue to a catatonic ZYZ is so important to me. The closest we'll get to his internal monologue about this whole situation. The kinds of things said when we think there's no conscious listener.
Okay so, having finished this episode and looking back, Li Lun's hands coming up from behind ZYC was not to denote possession (at least in this episode), potentially is a visual from ZYZ's POV, and seems related to the above screencap. I am so, so curious. Once again, I'm stopping myself from further speculation because I want to be surprised but ahhhhhhhhh
PSJ shooting at Ao Yin is so gorgeous. Her action scenes seriously never disappoint—the creativity of her fight choreos!! Also very cool that the whole team is getting to take part in the action, not just the two male leads.
Bai Jiu possession was not on my bingo card but I sure do love that we literally saw the possession take place and I still didn't connect the dots. Good shitttt. Also oh no ): ZYC was telling the truth about the soul needle, he was just tricked ):
Seriously from the Ao Yin case to getting PSJ released to reviving the Divine Wood to getting tricked by possessed!Bai Jiu to making pear soup to fighting ZYZ to fighting Li Lun—when will ZYC get a single goddamn vacation day holy shit.
Also when will WX tear up that contract so ZYZ can stop having a mild heart attack every time he wants to kiss her ): &I love that they saved the 300-year montage for this moment. While their ship doesn't give me brainrot personally, who could be unmoved by that incredible and undisclosed sacrifice? That's soulmatism.
Okay, I'd seen clips of them filming the ZYC and Li Lun fight but damn I did not expect it'd be happening right now!! Right after already taking damage from ZYZ? And my god is Li Lun brutal. The two actors did such an impressive job on this entire fight, what with Li Lun's ease and ZYC's suffering. I really appreciated the extensive hand-to-hand combat after Li Lun literally obliterated ZYC's sword. (Also though, given the origin of that sword, I kept hoping for a flashback to ZYC's brother once it broke, but alas, no dice.) Anyway, the show does not play around about ZYC whump it seems. I was very very shook by that throat punch; that shit legitimately looked like it hurt.
Honestly, I had a hard time with the extended ZYZ and Li Lun conversation at the very end because oh my god someone please heal ZYC lmao. But of course, that's the end of the episode~~
Y'all...check on your local ZYC stans because I was not okay after all that (': I need a heaping dose of comfort after all that hurt, but as always I'm cautious of hoping for much from canon itself. So yeah! Ep 23 was solid, but I would probably be in better shape if today's release just ended on ep 22 ((':
Time to go wait for the cast's Hi6 episode to drop so I can heal my battered heart ;-;

DRV3 blackeneds and how you would (maybe) perform first aid on them if they managed to survive their executions (part 2)
I'm surprised you guys seemed to like the last post I made along these lines, so here's some self indulgent brain rot yet again. Once again should say that I'm just a beginner and am omitting stuff
Kaede:
Tumblr media
For this, let's say that Kaede managed to escape being crushed by those spikes at the end. She'd either have to be gently lifted down, or have something moved under her so that the rope was no longer strangling her. After that, she should be carefully lowered to the ground for assumed spinal injuries (hold cspine). If she got nicked by the spikes at all, put pressure to those injuries. Treat for shock, give oxygen.
Kirumi:
Tumblr media
Kirumi DEFINITELY has a major spinal/head injury. She should be immediately held in cspine and then checked for broken bones, which should then be stabilized. This is a rough one because of the sheer amount of lacerations she has- first aid responders would probably have to quickly identify the worst ones (ie the ones bleeding the most) and immediately bandage them up to put pressure on them while bandaging up the minor ones and freeing their hands to again deal with the major cuts. Treat for shock, too. You'd need all hands on deck for this one.
Korekiyo:
Tumblr media
Other than dizziness and disorientation, the spinning at the beginning should be no problem. The biggest concern would be the major burns he would have over 80+% of his body, which would be life threatening. You'd have to remove as much of his clothes that were submerged in the boiling water as possible before any swelling, but not if they were stuck to him. Use cool (not cold) water to lessen the pain, then cover him in a dry sheet until you can get more help. I'm going to assume some kind of internal head injury (re: bleeding from the eyes?) and say to hold cspine just in case.
Gonta:
Tumblr media
Uhhh. Hoo boy. okay. The biggest concern here is obviously the gaping chest wound. This would be extremely difficult to deal with and is kind of immediately out of my scope, but If I had to try and do something, Id say to pack the injury and slow blood flow as much as possible. Lower him and hold cspine, though the stake he's tied to might ironically help with this (considering the exit wound is probably through the spine, I'm not sure it would help MUCH, but it's better than not doing anything). I guess while youre waiting for more help you can care for the stings? but the chest wound is going to be problematic enough I don't think you'd have time to worry about that.
In a much more ideal situation, the bug's leg would stay through him and help to stop blood loss. But regardless, this is a really rough one.
Kaito:
Tumblr media
If we're just talking about his execution itself, we'd have to check for broken bones and hold cspine for an assumed spinal/head injury. But that's not what killed him, is it? I'm not entirely sure how to go about Kaito's illness... from what we have in canon there really isn't much that could be done via first aid anyways. Keep him comfortable, give him oxygen, let him cough up the blood. The only way a first aid responder could do anything is if we were playing by the rules that his "illness" was actually poison. If you could figure out what poison it was, that could be extremely useful for him getting the help he needs later. but yeah, not much you can really do about that for him in the moment.

leon with a girly s/o who puts his hair in pigtails and apply make up on his face. afterwards, treats him with some skincare?
oh my god, baby! This is a funny and endearing picture of Leon! Imagining such a serious character in a situation like this gives him a touch of humanity, so here goes your headcanon, doll.
Leon with a girly s/o who does beauty routines for him
Tumblr media
At first, Leon might make a sarcastic comment or resist, saying something like:
"Is this really necessary?"
while his partner convinces him that a ponytail or braid would look great.
God, remember when your little brother or little cousin would start asking questions on a long trip? He's literally that in the process of combing his hair.
Wouldn't you rather have a mannequin? I feel like an experiment here.” “So saving the world isn't enough? Now I have to look pretty too, right?” “This is just what I needed after facing zombies… a ponytail.”
At least your fingers running through his scalp will relax him, he is a stressed man, since the incident in Raccoon City he can't sleep, besides it was either accept the job or be killed.
Tumblr media
Oh, the most difficult moment will be when he starts applying makeup. He might complain that the eyeliner tickles or that the blush is "too much" for him.
“I hope you don’t get too excited about the eyeliner. I don’t want to look like a clown.”
but his partner would assure him that he is in good hands.++
“If this is permanent, I’m going to need a mirror… and therapy.”
Finally, when applying skin care products, your partner might joke around by saying something like:
“With all those missions in the rain and shine, it’s a miracle your skin survived!”
Leon, half amused and half resigned, would probably make a sarcastic but adorable comment, like
“Is this what it’s come to?”
as she or he applies a face mask or massages his face with some moisturizer.
This part will be funny because of him comments.
“I thought wrinkles came with work. Now I have to worry about moisturizing them, too?” “Is all this necessary? Because in Raccoon City, my skin was the last thing on my mind.” “Whatever you say, but if someone at the agency asks me what I’m wearing, I’m not going to say ‘hyaluronic acid.’”
Despite everything, at the end of the “treatment” he might be surprised to see that his skin feels better, maybe he would even admit that he feels good, although he would keep his attitude reserved. In the end, he would let his beloved have fun, if only because he loves to see how happy his partner is!
“Well, I must admit… it’s not that bad. But if anyone finds out, I’ll be forced to erase it from their memories.” “If this is what it means to be civilized, I think I’ll still prefer survival mode.” “Now, what’s next? Catwalk classes or ‘seductive gaze’ training?”
Tumblr media
I imagined this, LMAO
Each comment would probably come with a resigned smile or a look of "please let this end soon," although, deep down, Leon would be enjoying the experience and the fun time together. His sarcasm would add a special touch to the situation!
Later on he might let you keep doing it just out of boredom or because he likes your fingers in him…in more ways than one (haha, sorry :( )
Maybe you are the reason for that perfect hairstyle that has survived hordes of zombies, explosions, bullets, etc. I mean, just look at it, it's been just as perfect for over 20 years!
Tumblr media
He loves you so much that he couldn't refuse this, as long as it was in privacy.

I am in a moody place, and as usual writing soothes me. I have no idea if there will be more of this, but have some broody post apocalyptic King!Steve.
The King Unbroken.
Jonathan was right. They must have crossed the border into what used to be California some time ago. Steve stared down at the old sign, half lodged in the dirt against a pile of twisted tree limbs. An old sign, more rust now than interstate green, nearly unreadable with vine cover. He could still just make out the faded off white letters that read: Little Valley. Five miles.
Sneering, Steve nudged aside the sign with the toe of his boot, revealing the dark opening of a small narrow room hallowed out in the stump of a once great tree - now dead, like so much else. He took one final sniff, spine tensing as he caught that faint whiff of salt that had followed him since they’d veered off route eighty. Maybe it was just sea air, carried in by the rain they had earlier that week. Or maybe it was something worse - like Hargrove.
He saw again, sharp blue eyes peering at him from behind the holes of a wooden mask - no doubt lifted from some museum - white paint highlighting the strange swirls and embellishments carved across the smooth surface of the wood, with brightly colored plumes of feathers jutting out from the top, more frightening than beautiful. It should have been cheesy - a jumped up kid with blood colored handprints staining his skin, trying to invoke fear by wearing the relics of some tribe long gone.
It wasn’t.
Hargrove’s reputation for brutality spoke for itself. And those eyes, that had been so focused in their hunger and unapologetic in Hargrove’s base desire to watch something weaker than himself squirm, had said the rest. Billy Hargrove had scared the piss out of Steve and that was saying something, given that between a choice of being handed over to a savage alpha in exchange for safe trade passages, or facing the flesh eating faceless monsters that roamed freely outside of the compound; Steve had chosen the monsters.
Fuck Billy Hargrove. Fuck his dad too. If the apocalypse had taught Steve anything, it was his value. He wasn’t good for much, but he could be a damn good shield for others. Funny it took the world ending for that to sink in. Because it didn’t matter anymore what his grades were or that he’d never been ‘the best’ at anything besides making others feel small while he stumbled down the path laid for him by his family status and his father’s money. None of it mattered because life was now a brutal game of survival, may the biggest asshole win, and even before the monsters gave him a reason everyone said that Steve Harrington was king asshole.
It wasn’t like Steve had gone through any great big revaluation or soul change. Turning over a new leaf had been literally as simple as turning over in his bunk the first night in the compound and accepting that none of the petty shit he used to care about mattered. Only, in the morning he’d still be alive while better people were dead, so either it was swallow the gun still resting on his nightstand or try and find a little good to do. That’s it. All he was living for. The chance to save a few better people and protect them for as long as he could. Maybe if humanity was lucky, one of those people might be the one to figure out how to deal with the monsters for good.
Everyone in the pack was in awe of the omega who carried a bat full of metal teeth and led raids against grey-dog hives, enemy packs and everything in between, like death couldn’t touch him and his heart was made of stone. There were plenty of people who would swear that Steve was heartless - even some of the ones he’d saved from the outside and brought into the pack himself - but he wasn’t. Not really. He kind of thought that if there ever was a moment that he felt safe enough to really think about everything he had been through since Day One, and everything he had done in between to survive, he’d probably lose it. It might break him, and then he truly would have been just a waste of space.
Which was precisely why he shoved it all down and never thought about it for too long. What was the point? Crying about the dead wasn’t going to bring them back. Neither would feeling guilty over the lives he’d taken. The kind of use the pack had for a soft sentimental omega, one who couldn’t or wouldn’t kill to survive was the stuff of nightmares. He’d seen it happen to most of the other omegas in his life. To his own mother. Only the strong survived here. Nothing was given for free. Anything of value on the other hand could always be taken, or traded.
Steve had proven that he could be more useful than just as a source of amusement and slick. That he could soldier with the best of them. He could get hit, kicked, knocked down, clawed full of holes, and drag himself back up every time. Since their first raid together his team had lost the fewest members and they still had the highest success rate of any party in the pack. Steve had carefully selected each member, because he’d always been good at surrounding himself with people stronger and smarter than himself, and convincing them somehow to care for him.
It was his one skill, besides hitting things. But by god he’d earned the right to say he’d proven he could make good use of what he had. He hadn’t survived watching those beasts tear apart his friends, seeing his mother passed around like a party favor for oil, just to end up sharing her fate. Traded off to a savage alpha to be bred and brutalized in an endless circle of hell until he died.
Fuck that!
Pushing the memory of the alpha aside, Steve knelt down onto his hands and knees and crawled inside, backward, tugging the heavy sign back into place after himself, and plummeting the den into darkness.
Breathing deep, the scent of dirt and rot filled his nose, and Steve Harrington breathed his first sigh of relief in days. It was stupid to think he would - no matter how much his dad complained about having to negotiate with a kid, it wasn’t Hargrove that needed them - but if there were any chance that Billy was following him, he wouldn’t be able to find Steve now.
Dead or not, the walls of the oak were thick. The natural scents of decay overpowered those of an unwashed human body. Even one of an omega flushed with heat and damp from exertion. Feeling around in the dark Steve’s fingers found the strap of the backpack with supplies that Robin had stashed there for him. It wasn’t much: a ratty old blanket (cheap in this warm climate). A water bottle (expensive anywhere). And a little plastic packet of Advil (worth more than gold these days).
But it’s more than most people have. Steve had always had more than what most people have. Even before the monsters came and civilization as he knew it crumbled around him. It wasn’t fair maybe, but life wasn’t fair. If it was, shitheads like him would have been the first to go in the apocalypse; the base of their power destroyed and unable to adapt to whatever new society emerged from the rubble. But that wasn’t what happened when the world as he knew it ended.
What happened was rich guys like his dad who survived long enough after the first appearance of the monsters, bought up resources while they fled to whatever approximation of safety money could buy them. They threw even more money at stocks and whatever else they hoped would make them richer once the danger was passed, and the smart ones stockpiled what they knew would become better than money in the event that the danger never did.
It hadn’t. Steve’s highschool, the stock market, and just about everything else from his old life was gone.
A few pockets of civilization still clung to life in a sea of monsters. Each colony ruled by whatever alphas had proven themselves better survivors than the rest, followed by those who hoped to be protected from a worse fate. Billy Hargrove was said to be one of the strongest alphas in the west.
He’d slaughtered the pack and taken over the territory that once had been their primary source of trade with the east. Steve’s father had offered him a king's ransom in goods for the promise to reopen trade. But Hargrove had only seemed to want one thing. The heartless omega he’d apparently heard so much about.
Curling up tighter in the small space, Steve brought the blanket over himself and shivered, despite the temperature he could feel climbing with each passing minute. His heat could not have come at a worse time but mercifully he’d made it to the den. With Jonathan and the others keeping a watch on the area he could be relatively confident that nothing would disturb him for a few days while he rode it out.
And when his heat was over, Steve had a new mission. Another chance to prove to his father that he had made a mistake, trading him to Hargrove.
Steve closed his eyes and slowed his breathing, trying to drift off to sleep to conserve his energy before the worst of the heat arrived. The faintest whisper of the sea tickled in the back of his nose, more memory than real. Haunting him. Steve gritted his teeth and silently renewed his vow.
He was going to bring his father back Billy’s head, along with the territory that came with it. And when he did no one would ever question again why he’d survived this long, unchained and unbroken.

Playing With Fire - Cooper Adams X Female Reader
Tumblr media
Title: Playing With Fire
Cooper Adams X Female Reader
Additional Characters: Riley (Mentioned), his son (Mentioned), Rachel, and a news reporter
WC: 2,926
Warnings: Mentions of murder/killing (none take place), slight change in canon storyline, very brief mention of affairs (none take place), single dad Cooper, arson mentioned, mentioned of mental illnesses, age gap (40's/20's), possessive Cooper (but not too much), nicknames, banter, slightly suggestive, mini angst, italics, and fluff
Cooper Adams had made it out. He had made it out alive and well, and his family - and all the people at the concert, including police and FBI - were none the wiser that he was The Butcher. He'd admit that they indeed made it difficult for him, but Cooper was smart. Intelligent in a way that allowed him to stay three steps ahead of everyone else, usually.
His ability to blend in, to become just another face in the crowd, was unmatched. The persona he had cultivated over the years, that of a loving father, a devoted husband, and a trustworthy firefighter, was nothing more than a well-crafted mask. Underneath it all, the real Cooper thrived in the chaos, satisfying the monster inside him.
He had managed to avoid arousing suspicion, maintaining his calm, collected demeanor even as the authorities closed in on others. He must've blacked out or something, he didn't remember how he and Riley had escaped - well, how he escaped. Riley still had no idea who or what her father was. And he’d like to keep it that way.
But, a week after Lady Raven’s concert, his carefully constructed world began to fracture. His wife thought that he was having an affair; he wasn’t.
The revelation came out of nowhere, after a quiet dinner that was too peaceful to be real. The kids had already gone to bed after devouring their dessert, and Cooper had felt a strange calm wash over him, knowing that his double life was safe. But then that all changed.
“I want a divorce.”
Rachel’s words hung in the air, colder than the untouched dessert of pie in front of him. For a brief moment, Cooper felt as if one of his lives was cracking, a sharp splintering sound reverberating in his mind. The mask he had worn for so long threatened to slip. But, he was Cooper, after all, and he had survived worse. He could gain control over most situations, and he'd gain control of this one. Just a bump in the road.
‘A divorce would be for the best,’ He reasoned with himself. He could play the part of the heartbroken husband, the loving father who still wanted to be in his children’s lives. He’d get sympathy, not suspicion. “Yes,” He said slowly, calculating his next move. “Maybe it’s for the best.”
His wife’s face softened, perhaps expecting resistance, but instead finding a man resigned to his fate. She had no idea she was giving him exactly what he needed.
She moved out, and into an apartment that following month. The divorce was finalized a few months later.
He was supposed to stop, he had planned to end his life, but his kids… He needed to be a part of their lives. This divorce was needed, but it changed his overall plan. And then, on top of everything that was happening, the concert happened.
He didn't know how they knew he was going to be there. His mind raced with the possibilities. But, it didn't matter in the end. He was stepping away from The Butcher’s legacy forever.
Cooper had always been the master of his own fate, and he intended to end his reign as The Butcher on his terms before the risks eclipsed the rewards. He was acutely aware that, sooner or later, the law would close in, or he’d slip up.
Overall, he wanted to step away from being The Butcher, to spend more time with his children. He didn’t want them to grow up with a father who wasn’t there for them.
And he escaped. He escaped, and no one knew he was The Butcher. Not the police, not the FBI, not even his family. Now, it was time. Time to step back, to retire from the darkness that had consumed him for so long. Time to slip back into the life he had built, the life of a father, an ex-husband, a firefighter - an ordinary man of everyday society.
He thought he would just go on with his life - spending time with his kids every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, going to work, and coming home to an empty house. Life carried on as before, just without his now ex-wife. The routine was supposed to be enough, a return to normalcy.
But, then he met you...
A year later, Cooper was at work when the sirens blared - there was a fire at a college dorm. It was just another job, another fire to extinguish. But as he arrived at the scene, hopping out of the firetruck, his attention was immediately drawn to you. You stood a safe distance from the blazing building, wearing worn-out Converse, shorts, and an oversized hoodie; with your college emblem on the back of it.
There was something unsettling about the scene before him. And then, as if sensing his intense gaze, you turned your head and your eyes locked with his. At that moment, something shifted within him. But before he could process the feeling, he snapped out of it and returned to work. Soon, the fire was manageable, and not even two hours later, it was extinguished.
After the flames were put out and the smoke had begun to clear, Cooper found himself drawn back to where you had been standing. He approached you and you looked up at him, and he had a chance to introduce himself. It was a brief exchange, but it was enough to spark a connection. A connection that he hadn’t been expecting.
~~~
Cooper had never expected his life to take such a turn. What started as an unexpected spark at the scene of a confirmed arson fire had blossomed into something deeper. He and you had been dating for a few months, and Cooper found himself surprisingly content. Your presence in his life brought a lightness he hadn’t felt in years.
Cooper often found himself marveling at how well you fit into his world. The age difference seemed insignificant compared to the happiness and stability you brought into his life. It was clear that you weren’t just a fleeting presence. Plus, his kids loved you; Riley had already seen you as a role model.
Yet, despite the joy and contentment, Cooper’s need for control never fully dissipated. His controlling tendencies extended into every corner of his life, including his relationship with you. He needed to know what you were up to when you went out, and he often texted and called you while you were at college, checking in on you with a frequency that some might find overbearing to those outside of the relationship. But you found it endearing. It was his way of maintaining control, of ensuring everything was as it should be.
When you were together, and he wasn't working, Cooper took it upon himself to handle everything as well, often insisting that you relax and not lift a finger. Whether it was managing household chores or planning outings, he was always there, ensuring you were comfortable and well cared for. To him, this wasn’t just about showing affection; it was a means to exert control, to keep every aspect of your shared life under his watchful eye.
Again, you didn’t bat an eye. You understood his need for control and found comfort in the way he took care of you; it gave you a routine. His meticulous nature was just another part of what made him who he was - and you loved who he was - it brought a sense of security and warmth to your relationship that you valued deeply.
His ex-wife, Rachel, never truly understood him. She noticed his obsessive tendencies and his need for control, but she often saw them as quirks rather than deeply ingrained aspects of his personality. She would sometimes dismiss his need for order and control, urging him to 'relax' or 'let things go,' which only heightened his anxiety and need for control. Their relationship eventually strained under the weight of these misunderstandings, leading to a growing emotional distance between them.
With you, you don’t just tolerate Cooper’s need for control; you seem to intuitively understand it. You recognized that his constant checking in, his insistence on handling everything, wasn’t just a desire to take care of you - it was a way for him to maintain a sense of stability in his world that he originally didn't have.
To keep a long story short, there was something about you that captivated him - perhaps because he had never met anyone who seemed to understand him as deeply as you did.
~~~
Keys jingling in the lock, Cooper opened the front door. The lights in the house were dimmed, only a couple of lamps leading to the living room. Shrugging off his jacket, he carefully folded it, placing it on the small table by the stairs; so he could easily bring it upstairs to his closet when he was ready for bed.
Searching, he found you on the couch, typing away on your laptop. Even though you and Cooper had only been dating for six months, he had practically begged you to move in with him. The thought of you staying in the college dorms didn’t sit well with him, especially after the fire that had occurred there nine months ago. It wasn't just the threat of fires that concerned him though; there were dangerous people out in the world - monsters - and the idea of you being so exposed made him uneasy. In other words, he wanted you for himself, and he knew that he was strong enough to protect you, if needed.
Living together gave him peace of mind, knowing you were safe and under his protection.
Looking up from your computer, you gave him a small smile. "Hey, Coop," You began, your voice warm. "How was work?"
Your attention drifted back to your screen, but Cooper knew that there was genuine interest in your question, the way you always cared about the little details of his day. It was one of the things he loved about you - how you made him feel important, even in the mundane moments.
"Busy as usual, paperwork mostly," Cooper replied, a smile tugging at his lips as he watched you. "But, it’s better now that I’m home." He walked over to you. Leaning down, he cupped the back of your head with a hand, placing a kiss on the top of your head before sitting beside you on the couch. "What are you working on?" He asked, his gaze flicking to your laptop screen.
"History," You answer with a sigh, saving your work and shutting the laptop, "But, you're home now, so I guess I should take a break." You joked lightly, placing the laptop on the coffee table.
"Hmm," Cooper hummed thoughtfully, his hand sliding up to the back of your neck as he began to massage it. "You’ve been working hard, sweetheart. A break would be a good idea." His touch was firm yet soothing, a mix of care and control that you’d come to recognize as uniquely his.
You sighed, shutting your eyes, relishing in the feeling of Cooper's fingers working all the knots before running through your hair. "Want to watch something?" You muttered, fluttering your eyes open as he finished his little massage; settling more comfortably against him, tossing your legs over his lap, his hand instinctively resting just above your knee.
"Yeah, sure," Cooper agreed as his free arm traveled down to wrap around your waist. "What do you want to watch?"
"I don’t know…" You trailed off, "We could just scan until we find something mildly interesting."
Cooper nodded, before scanning through the channels. You were half paying attention to the TV screen, more interested in fidgeting with Cooper's hand on your leg. Cooper’s hand was large and strong, the kind of hand that seemed made for the work he did. Solid, capable, with slightly calloused fingers that spoke of years of hard labor. His skin was warm against yours, a comforting presence as his thumb occasionally brushed against you. The veins on the back of his hand were prominent, a subtle reminder of his strength - power - yet the way he held you was tender.
Your drowsiness vanished as the words "Breaking News: Ninth Arson Attack Strikes City, Possibly Linked to Serial Arsonist," filled the room. You straightened up, your attention fully captured by the screen. The images of a blazing warehouse played out in stark contrast to the comfort of the couch, the flickering flames reflected in your wide eyes. The newscaster continued the urgency in her voice. "In a shocking development, authorities are investigating a devastating fire that broke out late last night at a local warehouse, marking the ninth suspected arson attack in the city in recent months. The fire, which quickly engulfed the building, required multiple firefighting units to bring under control. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported, but the damage is extensive, and the warehouse is considered a total loss."
"I was there for that. Took hours to get the fire out." You heard Cooper say, his own eyes watching the scene before him on the screen. “Do you think they'll catch him?”
You hummed softly, "They might, but it’s not going to be easy for them."
The newscaster continued, "-Investigators are working tirelessly to piece together evidence from the crime scenes and are appealing to the public for any information that might lead to a breakthrough in the case. In the meantime, the city remains on high alert as the search for the arsonist intensifies."
As the newscaster continued to report, you leaned back into the couch, your hand stopping its ministrations to cover Cooper’s on your leg. "Well," You said casually, your tone carrying an eerie undertone, "He’s definitely made a name for himself. You know, it’s almost poetic, makes you wonder what drives someone to turn their pain into something so... Powerful."
Cooper glanced over, an eyebrow raised in curiosity. "Poetic? That’s an interesting way to put it."
You met his gaze, a flicker of something unreadable in your eyes. "Yeah, well, it’s like he’s creating a masterpiece with every fire. Some people just have a way of making their mark, you know? Even if it’s through destruction." As the newscaster’s report droned on, you shifted slightly, your eyes never leaving the screen. You spoke with a casual air, but your words held an unsettling edge. "For example,.. Serial killers and serial arsonists..," You trailed off, your tone almost contemplative, "They're not so different, really. Both are driven by something deep, something they can’t quite control."
There was a pause, and Cooper’s eyes narrowed, staring at the side of your face. Did you know? Did you know about him? And with the way you spoke, so intimately about the mindset of someone who causes chaos and leaves destruction in their wake, felt eerily familiar. It was as if you were speaking from a place of experience, not just observation.
Suddenly, the memory of that night - the night he first saw you at the dorm fire, standing so calm in the face of destruction - came rushing back. The pieces fell into place in his mind.
You weren’t just intrigued by the arsonist’s actions; you were speaking from the perspective of someone who knew all too well what it was like to manipulate fear and destruction. The recognition was there, behind the facade of your own calm demeanor, and Cooper couldn’t shake the feeling that you were hiding a darker truth about yourself.
Cooper leaned in closer, his honeyed gaze intense but measured. He kept his voice low, “You seem to have a pretty deep understanding of what drives someone to create chaos.” His words were carefully chosen, probing but vague, designed to test the waters without directly accusing you. He maintained a steady, almost casual demeanor, hoping to gauge your reaction without revealing his own suspicions; he turned in his seat, facing you, his arm slipping from your waist to rest on the back of the couch.
You met his gaze with a knowing smirk, your eyes reflecting a mixture of amusement and something darker. “Well, not only do I take a Criminal Justice class, but…” You paused smoothly, your voice carrying a hint of playful menace, “I’ve always found that understanding the darker side of human nature can be quite enlightening. After all, everyone has their dark sides and secrets. Some are just better at hiding them than others. Don't you agree, Cooper?" You tilted your head.
‘Yeah… You knew. But how?’ He stared at you, his expression neutral but his eyes betraying a flicker of recognition. “Yes,” He murmured slowly, his dark brown eyes narrowing ever so slightly, “I do agree.”
The room seemed to hold its breath as his hand on your leg moved up, his fingers gripping your inner thigh with a possessive yet tender pressure.
"Well," You began, voice back to its usual lighthearted tone, "I don't know about you, but I am exhausted," You stood from the couch, only to bend down, your hand cupping his stubbly cheek, tilting his head up to meet yours, pressing a lingering kiss to his lips, "And I would love nothing more than to snuggle with you."
Yeah… You understood. Cooper looked up at you, his dark eyes softening as he felt the warmth of your kiss.
He smirked, a hint of amusement in his voice as he stood. "Come on, sweetheart, let's get some rest."

Where relief had sat after the good news, FEAR slowly creped and crawled in, too, as the question was whispered somewhere in the back of his mind, by an unfamiliar voice, WHAT IF THIS WAS ALL JUST A DREAM? Fragments of his own imagination, pieced together as he lay on the hard stone floor somewhere deep underneath the Tower of London – bleeding out – dying. Had enough blood on his shirt, and trousers for it. Dark patched of the once fever-red liquid. The nurse had brought it up, too! He vaguely remembered, now, how she had asked him if he wanted her to see if they had anything they could offer him in replacement, so he could get changed. Had never answered her. Stared into the distance. Waiting. Endlessly hoping.
He looked more awake now; his eyes had focused the moment the nurse had mentioned the magic words. SHE IS AWAKE. Like a light being switched back on again. – Looked at the nurse briefly now too, as if he wanted to say something to her, but he didn’t find the right words and turned his attention back to Kate.
And if he was lying somewhere, bleeding out because he had failed – maybe this wasn’t the worst thing to imagine. Kate, with the colour returning to her face and not as white as the bedsheets. Kate, with a soft expression in her eyes as they met his own. Either way, it just meant he wouldn’t lose her, did it not? While he had given up years ago to imagine what would happen to him after death, at least dying didn’t seem this bad if it meant he didn’t have to live with the loss.
MANAGED ANOTHER SMILE AT HER; a choked chuckle accompanying it, as Kate asked him the question he had already expected. Felt as though they had been here before. They have been. About a year ago, when she had survived another impossible thing. And then she asked him a similar question, too. Boat One. The crew. The rest of the personnel. Only then his answer hadn’t been accompanied by a smile but a tortured expression – not wanting to answer because she deserved a break.
He wouldn’t say it was GOOD NEWS now, but it was easier to answer than the last time. A NOD. The smile still lingering for just a second. “ – the trainees all made it out. I’ll have to arrange with Rebecca and her team that they all get the right support, but we had no casualties on this side.” He didn’t have to mention, that there had been other victims to the attack as Kate had seen them. A few others, too. They would be honoured at the right moment. Wouldn’t be forgotten either.
Stood there for just a moment, until he could feel the nurse’s hand on his arm; giving him a little shove. Now go sit down, the kind eyes seemed to say. OH, he remembered her. The nurse who had given him a vase for the flowers he had brought to the hospital last time he had been here. The same one, who had told him about the aspirin in the water to keep the bouquet fresh for longer. – Odd. The things one could remember.
Tumblr media
Still on his feet, he only took a step closer to the bed; not knowing what to do with himself, not to mention his hands, he rested one on the end of Kate’s bed, close to the clipboard with all her information on it. Eyes wandering towards it briefly, before he turned back to Kate and raised his voice again. “ – I spoke to Josh and Vikram… I remember them mentioning it was pure luck that a lot of our scientific staff wasn’t in today…” Not a lie. He remembered it. Not the exact words Josh or Vikram had used, but he remembered the look on their faces. Too many dead already. But they had managed to save so many, too. Even Kate.
Afterwards, it was nothing but a blur, little fleeting moments in time that the more she tried to keep a hold of, the more seemed to slip away. Briefly recalled the ambulance, the flashing lights, the sirens, the shouting and then afterwards, the bright lights of the hospital corridor and the operating theatre. Strange figures in green scrubs with gloves and masks and white caps, all gathered around her like some sort bizarre pantomime. It was the pain that kept rousing her, that searing, blinding hot pain tearing across her shoulder. Fought to keep a hold of that pain, even though she cursed it, hated it, wanted it to be over and done with.
Too stubborn to go quietly...even if there was a voice calling out to her from far away. Somewhere over there, where that bright light was coming from. A voice she hadn't heard for some time now. Katherine....what the devil are you doing here? Gone before she could even really process any of that. Felt like she was falling. No, not falling? Was she?
Woke to the sound of the monitor quietly beeping, squinting up at a pale green ceiling. Could feel soft sheets beneath her and a hard hospital mattress and not another soul in the room save for an older woman with kind eyes that she didn't recognise. Hit her then like a speeding train. UNIT, the tower. The invasion. The alien militia. Had they all made it out? Had they managed to reclaim HQ?
Panicked now, she tried to sit up... but her limbs felt heavy, sluggish to respond.... Felt groggy. At least the pain had dulled, the wound sutured and patched. She could feel the drip in her left arm. That probably had something to do with it. Briefly, Kate felt a strange sense of deja vu. Had she woken up before this? Remembered the surgeon talking to her.
The nurse was quick on the uptake. "No, no! don't even try it! I told them, I said it! I said, I've seen this one before. A real fighter. Never listens, thinks she knows better than the rest of us. There now. Let's get you sitting up before you hurt yourself..." Tried to protest, half offended, half mystified, gawping at the nurse like a goldfish in it's pond and trying to follow what she was saying, ❝ S-sorry, wha-? ❞
But the nurse did not answer, shuffling over to the bed to take the hand remote off it's holder, one hand gently supporting her to sit upright, the other adjusting the bed. The older woman beamed, evidently proud of her work. She dropped the remote back into it's cradle, waggling a finger at Kate, "Now you stay put, I'll just go tell him you're awake..." She paused at the door, tutting, "You gave him a fright love. Got to stop landing yourself in hospital I think, or we'll have to put him up in a bed next yours!" Kate stared after her, completely bewildered for a moment or two. Briefly, she wondered whether she had in fact woken at all.
It was only when the nurse reappeared, bringing with her a familiar face to soothe at least, some of the anxiety, that the words started to fall into place. God....That nurse. It was the same woman from a year ago, when she'd landed herself here after Boat One had gone down... which meant...
Oh. Those large brown eyes softened as she met his, realising just what the woman was talking about, ❝ Ed... ❞ Kate swallowed thickly, words quite failing her in the moment. A hundred and one things running through her mind, unable to pluck a single thread out of them and unravel it into a coherent thought. Could only focus on something she could make sense of right now. And that was work. ❝ ...the tower, are they.... did everyone make it out? ❞

Thinking again about my plans for Vash and Knives in ITNL
Which I can't really get into the specifics for How I'm going to do things w/o going into spoiler territory. But I Do have Vash & Knives tagged on the fic for a reason. I set up in the first chapter that Vash is determined to try to save Knives too.
Which. That choice, as well as the entire basis for all of this, depends so much on that final fight in trimax. The one that was literally a scene away from where ITNL Vash went back in time. His mentality just a hair's width away from that...
At the end of trimax, there was reconciliation, however brief and incomplete it was. In ITNL, my question to myself was How could I induce that again? Under different circumstances, How Else could we get there? And that is the long-game in ITNL.
#speculation nation#itnl shit#i say reconciliation instead of redemption. because i think redemption is a difficult thing to capture well.#and it would require Knives to feel remorse or regret for his actions. which i dont think he would really.#but. potentially. if the stars align. maybe his goals can be redirected into something productive.#and maybe reconciliation can be achieved. just maybe.#the redirection here is important bc i dont think Knives would abandon his ideals Even If Vash got thru to him#but the key is convincing him that theres another way. that he can protect the plants w/o killing humanity.#easier said than done though. vash and knives are two peas in a pod after all. so incredibly stubborn.#but vash would want to try. because he Doesnt want to kill anyone. not even knives. though if it ended up necessary.....#well. better to try for reconciliation first. that one's as a last resort lol.#ultimately vash Does miss his brother. we see this at the end of trimax. that's the crux of that moment i think. for both of them.#realizing that once upon a time they only had each other. they were Brothers. they were Close. and they both Miss That.#those feelings were buried under miles of anger and resentment on both sides. but under the right circumstances.....#thats why it's important that ITNL was a hair's width away from that scene. bc he was on the verge of having that realization himself.#i replaced that moment with ITNL vash feeling thru the plant conglomerate the whole of knives' self. and his Realization.#the Knowledge that the brother he used to love is still in there somewhere. but he also wouldnt be able to survive this.#and thus his about-turn from 'nothing remained of the brother he loved. he had to stop him.' to 'i'm sorry. i'll save you too.'#hfalhxksd ultimately it's all so FINICKY and ive barely touched on it so far in ITNL. bc Knives has been off in the goop tube or whatever#but ive given it a Lot of thought. and id be so close to Getting There... to the next steps at least... if i kept writing.#hrrgmg. i am Thinking Thoughts...

i know hoyo is setting up rhine to have good intent and whatever in her trying to 'save' khaneri'ah or whatever; but i REALLY hope they stay with the cruel persona thats been built up for her. because it would be so wonderful to see a character who had good intent in the beginning just get absolutely corrupted; with the inability to ever go back to that prior state purely because of what had happened. also because there is NO way in her turning back after all that shit
#sorry. i dont think theres any good and plausible explanation for rhine to still be a kind or gentle person in general#she can (and SHOULD) have her moments. but it'd make so much more sense (and be much more impactful) for her to be inherently cruel#because look at all the stuff thats happened#i love the indomitable human spirit trope. dont get me wrong.#but rhine has that in the way she WONT stop her research till shes either dead or murdered. she is not gonna be gentle kind and optimistic#she watched all her kids (that she was SHOWN to care for) get very brutally murdered.#had to then go and kill her next creations that she didn't consider perfect (which most certainly fucks a women up. no matter what you say)#made the 'perfect creation' and the way she treated him was obviously a HUGE contrast to how she was before (being gentle and nuturing)#and left him (albeit with what we can guess was good intent) with NO goodbye just#a recommendation letter. a text. and his final mission#she could have good intent#and still care for others#dont get me wrong!!!!!!!#but shes. human???#humans can be (as much as i hate to say it) a tad selfish when it comes to survival#and being antagonized demonized AND shunned by teyvat and even her own people. having to survive multiple gods wrath#isn't. gonna be good for the human psych#and it isn't gonna be something fixable#look at how furina progressively faltered over a hundered years WHILE being adored#she already started waning in her ethics and morals (as someone immortalized as a human WOULD)#with exposing lyney and all of that when it was VERY clearly the morally wrong thing to do (which her as a human would know)#and being relatively pessimistic and clearly spiralling#(no hate. i love furina with all my heart.)#if thats how FURINA started going#imagine rhine who has nobody (save maybe alice. but i doubt she'd be constant given her spontaneous nature and refusal to sit still)#shit man. even I'D go crazy and be horrible.#its okay and natural to be bitter#and its not as if anybody was there to help#hexenzirkel has a ton of women who survived their own nations falling yes#but not ONE of them (from what we know) has had circumstances any where near rhine's

ryle leaned back slightly, his eyes never straying far from hers, even as she turned her gaze elsewhere. the words she chose to express her fascination hung in the air like a challenge, one he wasn't inclined to shy away from. “uncertainty,” he repeated softly, his voice carrying a quiet weight. there was a subtle shift in his expression, a flicker that passed through his eyes — something unreadable, but telling all the same. he'd heard that word before. too many times, in fact. the idea that some people feared it while others embraced it, as though it were a choice. to him, it wasn’t so much about choice — it was the nature of things, a part of life he’d come to accept, whether he wanted to or not. “uncertainty is a constant,” he continued, his lips curving into a slight, knowing smile. his gaze, though steady, deepened, becoming more reflective. “it’s there whether you face it head-on or bury your head in the sand. people like to act like they can control it, tame it, but the truth is — it’s always one step ahead.” his eyes flicked down for just a moment, as if weighing the truth of his own words. then, meeting her gaze again, he shrugged slightly, the motion casual but with an undercurrent of something heavier. “i’m just someone who’s learned to move with it.” he paused, giving her a chance to digest, though he suspected she’d already caught the hint. a person who embraced uncertainty didn’t simply survive it — they thrived in it. ryle’s life, the one he’d carved out for himself, wasn’t about predictability. It was about adaptability, resilience, and the strength to walk through the fire without burning up. but even more than that — there was something about evie that made him want to share. not everything, but enough. enough to keep this conversation from feeling like a fleeting exchange. he studied her, letting the silence hang between them for a beat longer. there was something oddly comforting in her presence, in the way she saw him. maybe that’s why he felt compelled to open up, just a little. “most people would run from uncertainty,” he added, leaning forward just slightly, his tone dropping a fraction. “but i suppose... it’s easier when you’ve already seen the worst of it. and survived.” ryle’s eyes held hers firmly now, no longer hiding the full extent of his awareness of her. it wasn’t an intimidation game — there was a rawness there, a vulnerability she’d likely catch if she looked close enough. but he wouldn’t be the one to name it. “though,“ he continued, a smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth as the tension shifted, “i'm guessing you've had your fair share of dancing with the unknown, too.”
“i’m sure it’s pretty far from glamorous, but im also sure you handle them both with ease” evie added prying her eyes from him briefly to view the clock positioned on the wall behind him. noticing the minute hand had continued to tick in absence of her friend. it wasn’t long before her eyes returned to his and she took notice from her peripheral that his had never left her. something about his comment didn’t feel believable. in fact, he gave her great reason to believe otherwise considering he didn’t know her from a can a paint yet made it his business to assure she felt safe.
he intrigued her, a lot more than she intended to let on. or so she figured, but she had unintentionally searched his depths allowing a silence to fall between them briefly. it wasn’t awkward with him or no power struggle for her, the eye contact actually spoke volumes. it was her soft chortle that broke the silence making her lose this unstated stare contest again. her brow cocked in curiosity. “you honestly don’t seem like the type that has to be asked… you seem more instinctive.”
evie listened to him attentively as he elaborated on the fear these men where subject to when it came to him, and she nodded her head. “in other words, you take names and kick ass if need be” the smile lines gradually deepened, especially at his mention of this fire. with her upbringing, you either had to be one with the fire or be consumed by it. and sure she made well off on her own, she was very resourceful but who didn’t truly enjoy the comfort of being protected. even when it became a lost art, something often said but rarely done at no cost.
she tilted her head slightly with her attention fully fixed on him, trying to decipher any underlying connotations. evie allowed her eyes to caress every visible feature of his before returning to his inviting hues. it was driven with intent and she made it a very notable distract. “very,” she agreed with a nod of her head allowing her eyes to drift off to nothing in particular briefly. “but i'd have to admit- im far more fascinated with the person that not only accepts uncertainty, but is unafraid of it as well.”
