Darcy Palmer is a ruthless, cold-hearted man. He runs a hitman agency that Gardenia was using to try to kill her daughter, Amy Lindsay. Despite this, Amy got recruited by him [under the threat of death], and ended up one of his top employees. He's currently leading her on to believe that they're in some sort of relationship, purely so he can easily manipulate her and use her in any way he so pleases. He's done reprehensible things to Amy, and makes her think they're completely normal.

Darcy wouldn't even advocate for monster rights if you paid him to. The lack of any rights [and subsequent systematic oppression] for monsterkind makes more of them flock to illegal jobs, so why would he want that to stop? He's even had surgeries to flatten his teeth and takes a human form so he's not subject to the prejudice he perpetuates.

"   I   know   we   haven't   seen   each   other   in   over   a   decade,   but   you   can   tell   me   anything,   you   know   that   right?   I'm   still   the   same   friend   from   years   ago,   "   Darcy   says.

Helene   gives   him   a   little   smile   in   appreciation   before   dropping   her   gaze   for   just   a   moment,   so   she   can   prepare   herself   to   tell   him   exactly   what   has   been   going   on.   It's   been   almost   four   years   now   since   she   ended   things   with   Joel,   but   the   memory   of   their   time   together   was   pretty   fresh   in   her   mind   on   the   daily.

"   It's   not   just   a   five   minute   conversation,   Darcy,   this   is   gonna   take   all   afternoon,   "   she   chuckles,   though   the   pain   is   hiding   behind   her   eyes.

As   soon   as   he   catches   sight   of   a   glimpse   of   sorrow   within   her   expression,   he   moves   over   to   the   counter   and   flips   the   kettle   on   to   boil   it   and   make   them   both   a   nice,   warm   drink.   He   usually   goes   with   tea   because   most   people   don't   mind   it   and   in   fact   end   up   preferring   it   if   they   aren't   in   the   best   of   spirits,   so   that   is   what   he   places   into   the   mugs.

"   Do   you   take   sugar?   "   he   asks,   laughing   the   moment   she   scowls   at   the   thought   of   it.   "   I'm   guessing   that's   a   no   then.   I   have   mine   with   two   sugars   still,   just   like   when   we   were   kids.   "

"   I   haven't   had   sugar   in   my   tea   since   I   was   about   14.   I   don't   know   what   happened,   but   one   day   I   just   tried   it   without   sugar   and   now   I   can't   stand   the   taste   of   it   if   it's   in   there,   "   she   thinks   back   on   that   time   for   a   minute   as   the   memories   flood   on   in.

"   Yea..   no,   don't   think   I   could   do   that.   If   there's   nothing   sweet   in   there,   I   don't   want   it,   "   he   says,   pouring   the   water   into   the   mugs   so   the   tea   can   brew   for   a   little   while.

Helene   lets   out   a   soft   little   puff   of   air   as   she   sits   herself   at   the   kitchen   table,   glancing   outside   and   feeling   the   rays   of   sunshine   burst   through   the   windows.   The   flowers   in   his   garden   seem   to   be   gently   swaying   in   a   light   breeze   and   suddenly,   she   smiles.   The   fact   that   he   has   such   a   well   groomed   and   protected   flower   garden   makes   her   happy.

"   How   long   have   you   been   keeping   this   garden   so   perfect?   "   she   asks,   accepting   the   mug   of   tea   and   offered   digestive   biscuit   with   a   warm   smile.

"   Only   since   I   got   back   here,   but   I've   never   missed   a   day   of   tending   to   them.   I'd   imagine   my   Gran   would   kill   me   if   I   allowed   a   day   to   go   by,   "   he   laughs,   sipping   his   tea.

Darcy   had   been   living   in   Chester   for   the   last   12   years,   but   thoughts   of   home   had   brought   him   back   just   under   two   years   ago   and   he   was   now   living   in   his   Grandmothers   bungalow   about   a   20   minute   drive   from   where   they   had   all   grown   up   as   kids.   They   just   happened   to   pass   by   one   another   while   they   were   both   out   shopping   in   Hoylake   today.

"   I   remember   your   Gran   so   well..   she   used   to   send   me   back   home   at   the   end   of   the   day   with   a   little   bottle   of   apple   juice   and   a   freshly   baked   scone,   "   she   says,   smiling.

Helene   reached   her   hand   across   the   table   and   grasped   his   own,   squeezing   it   gently   to   let   him   know   that   she   understands   such   a   loss,   because   her   own   Grandmother   had   passed   a   few   years   prior   as   well.   The   memory   of   their   childhood   came   racing   back   in   that   moment   and   she   sighed,   but   it   was   a   much   happier   sounding   sigh   than   the   one   before.

"   I   haven't   forgotten,   you   know..   don't   think   you   can   get   away   with   telling   me   all   the   details   by   starting   a   different   topic   of   conversation,   "   Darcy   grins,   sipping   his   tea.

"   Fine,   but   I   promise   you..   you're   not   gonna   be   happy   about   it,   "   she   says,   eyes   lifting   to   meet   his   own   after   he   takes   a   bite   of   the   digestive   biscuit   after   dunking   it   in   the   tea.

"   I'm   willing   to   take   that   risk,   Starling,   "   his   grin   is   still   plastered   on   his   face,   because   he   thinks   this   is   just   going   to   be   some   mild   situation,   not   at   all   prepared   for   the   worst.

Darcy   bristled   almost   immediately   upon   hearing   the   name   Joel,   paired   with   the   word   abuse,   which   Helene   did   notice   but   elected   to   ignore   as   she   further   explained   everything   that   had   happened   over   the   course   of   their   three   year   relationship.   

It   seemed   that   the   male   sitting   across   from   her   was   gripping   his   mug   a   little   too   tightly   between   both   hands,   which   she   did   offer   some   relief   from   in   the   form   of   a   sad,   understanding   smile.

Her   friend   was   absolutely   shaken   by   the   news   she   had   filled   him   in   on,   especially   now   that   he   knew   this   about   the   person   he   used   to   be   friends   with..   and   was   again,   for   the   past   year   and   a   half,   buddies   with   again.   

The   thought   alone   of   Joel   having   handled   Helene   in   such   a   way   made   his   blood   boil   and   he   would   be   lying   if   he   said   he   didn't   feel   like   putting   the   guys   head   through   a   wall   for   the   damage   he   had   caused.

"   Guess   I'll   be   paying   old   pal   Joel   a   visit   this   afternoon,   ay?   "   he   says,   downing   the   rest   of   his   cuppa   and   finishing   up   the   other   half   of   the   biscuit   before   making   a   grab   for   his   coat.

"   Darcy,   please   don't   do   that.   I   kept   it   from   family   and   friends   for   so   long   because   I   knew   that   everyone   would   have   the   same   reaction,   "   she   begged   him,   setting   her   tea   aside   and   tugging   on   the   back   of   his   coat   as   he   made   his   way   out   into   the   hallway.   "   Darcy,   please.   "

It   makes   him   pause   for   a   brief   moment,   weighing   the   options   in   front   of   him,   but   he   still   has   it   in   his   mind   to   at   the   very   least,   knock   the   son   of   a   bitch   onto   his   ass.   

The   anger   that   was   currently   racing   through   his   veins   made   it   very   difficult   to   even   conceive   of   any   other   option   at   this   point   and   he   turns   to   look   at   her,   shooting   a   sad   smile   her   way   but   letting   her   know   at   the   same   time   that   he   cannot   just   sit   idly   by   and   do   nothing.

And   then   off   he   went,   right   out   the   door.   This   wasn't   even   Helene's   house,   but   she   made   sure   to   stay   put   until   he   returned   from   his   rampage,   because   no   doubt,   he   was   going   to   need   someone   there   when   he   got   back   from   dealing   with   whatever   Joel   could   offer.

It was strange to think that somehow, nobody had any idea where they found themselves at the moment. She continued to receive vague answers or was just told straight up that the answer was unknown. The question of whether or not she would freak out by this information made Crystal consider for herself if that was the way to go. Should this freak her out? That seemed like something that would concern anyone, and yet she wasn't as horrified as she probably should be. If anything, she didn't want these looming questions to ruin her chances of having a good time. A place like this, she should be enjoying herself, after how hard she had been working back home, she deserved a break, not extra work to solve an unsolvable puzzle.

"Hmm…that doesn't sound great, I'll be honest. But I suppose it could be worse, right?" she replied, sounding incredibly calm, almost naively so. As if she wasn't looking at the bigger picture, which truthfully, she wasn't. Right now, Crystal wanted to focus on matters that were more surface level.

"I guess I am pretty new. I'm Chrissy. Nice to meet you Darcy." It was interesting that hew fresh meat status was acknowledged, not that she made any point of hiding how completely clueless she was. It made her wonder if this place had a hierarchy, those who were here longer, having more seniority in a way, ran the show. "I try to stay calm in most situations, no point sweating the stuff we can't control, right?" she shrugged, going back to floating on her back in the tide pool, looking up at the sky and thinking about how perfect this would all be as long as she ignored all the weirdness.

"It seems like I have a lot of catching up to do around here though. I've seen quite a few people walking around, I didn't realize how many people were here before me. How long have you been on this beach, Miss Darcy?"

Chilling in the Tida Pools - Darcy wanted nothing more to be able to push aside what recently happened with the hornets and the grave as much as possible, but even though she was the queen of compartmentalizing and ignoring grieving horrors, even she couldn't be this chill about any of that. Not to mention once she came closer, the woman's words...

Yeah, she was completely new. No idea where she actually was and no idea what happened. It was kind of nice, to see that kind of easy, light smile, untainted by the hornets and the dead bodies.

"Hello to you too," Darcy smiled back, trying to not show the inner turmoils of everything right away. She didn't really want to scare away the new person - not from herself or the truth. "That's kind of a hard question to answer - how much would you freak out if I said none of us really know for certain where we are? And I don't think we're learning that anytime soon."

A pause and then she asked, "So save to assume you just arrived, right? I'm Darcy, by the way. You seem-- pretty calm for a person who just appeared... on an unknown beach."

Selin appreciated that despite their sense of justice and desire to find Beema in all this, Darcy still had the sense to suggest that they still should turn back and look for more help if their goal becomes trickier to achieve. As a teacher, she always advocated to her kids to ask for help when they feel they need it, making sure to remind them that whatever burden they bear they don't have to do it alone. Not only when it came to feelings or personal struggles, but something as simple as homework or learning a new game. Yet, Selin never followed her own advice, opting to do things herself and finding a way to handle things while dragging as little people along for the ride as possible.

But she nodded in agreement when getting more help was suggested, if they needed it, they'd go get it. For now, they moved forward, keeping as silent as possible while making sure not to trail too far behind and lose track of this wandering hornet. It was all very strange, how their priorities seemed to change, no longer interested in messing with them and their stuff. Whatever the reason for digging was, Selin hoped that it wouldn't result in even more danger.

The further they got through the wilderness, there was a part of Selin that felt like it looked familiar. Which was odd given the fact that she had never ventured this far before, and because for the most part, every part of this wooded area looked the same. Her brows furrowed as she tried to place that sense of deja vu she was experiencing, but once they started coming across scattered robotic hornet parts, and the sudden drop in front of them, she realized where they were.

She saw this. After being stung, this was the spot where her vision followed Tim. Along this pathway through the trees, where he was so angry he wasn't paying attention, only to drop down this pit. Selin held her breath and stopped, her eyes widening while Darcy was so casual, so unaware of what they might see if they looked down. It was haunting to see this place in person now, not from the view of a hornet recording, but physically being here. It sent a chill down her spine and when Darcy questioned if she could see Beema anywhere, Selin simply shook her head without even trying to look.

"I don't think she's here." Selin managed to answer slowly. "But we should be careful. This is…this place…Tim is down there. The hornet showed me this when I got stung. And I watched Tim fall down that pit." She started backing away, trying to keep her distance from the pit itself, not daring to step close enough to peek over the edge. "I think we should turn back, search for her somewhere else."

Darcy smiled softly as Selin explained how Lokni helped her out. "Yeah, I can only agree, he's great. We got into a sticky situation when we were still on the ship, before we even got onto shore and he was just so calm, handling it all, it was a comfort just in having him around, even though we barely even met at that point." The way they seperated stung for Darcy, especially knowing now that she probably could have helped more, but it was in the past now and it didn't end in tragedy, she was focusing on that.

They both stopped and just watched the hornet for a moment, but thankfully it didn't notice them. "Yeah, hopefully we'll be able to tell if it turns back towards the beach." Granted, the mist was worse in some cases, so really, it wasn't an absolute certainty that they would be able to. But there wasn't much else they could do - just shouting and going around hoping they'd stumble upon Beema was nothing more than a guessing and hoping game. "Or if it gets way too creepy and looks more dangerous than we think we can handle, we can just turn around and try to get some more help for ourselves."

She nodded and whisperred, "Yeah, I saw before I left to come search for Beema. I considered helping too, but ended up coming this way. To continue about Caroline Bingley's marriage prospects, many people tell me that no one would want her with that terrible disposition. Now I have a few things to say about that.

Firstly, we see Caroline at her worst in Pride & Prejudice, she is jealous of Elizabeth and angry that she lost Darcy to such a woman. However, when Caroline tries to be charming, she is, even Elizabeth finds her agreeable occasionally at Netherfield.

Secondly, Darcy likes Caroline's behaviour, that is why she does it. Jane Austen actually puts a lot of his thoughts in her mouth. We know Darcy is worried about the inferiority of Elizabeth's connections, Caroline quips that he can put a portrait of Mr. Phillips (the low class type of lawyer) beside his great uncle the judge. These are likely Darcy's own thoughts. And before he fell for Elizabeth, Darcy was happily insulting her and the whole family with Caroline (and Louisa). Caroline is basically a mirror for what Darcy thinks which seems to be what some men like (I assume).

But here is the more important point, some men want a woman like Caroline, someone ambitious. Marriage is a partnership and in many ways a financial/business one. For example, Thomas Palmer from Sense & Sensibility wants to be elected to parliament, Caroline Bingley would be all over that. She would schmooze her way across society all you wanted. Mr. Elliot from Persuasion went for wealth over ambition, but as a young barrister a wife like Caroline probably could have greatly helped his career since their money all came from referrals and connections.

Lucy Steele and Mary Crawford may not have been suited to their possible clergyman husbands, but would they have made them bishops if Edward and Edmund wanted that even slightly? I would bet real money on it. Mr. Collins is ambitious and he got the best wife he could have asked for. Charlotte is clearly on the campaign for his prospects, even going so far as to hope Darcy does like Elizabeth because he has patronage in the church.

Robert Ferrars may occasionally fight with his wife, but I'm sure he loves that Lucy's wheedled her way into mommy's heart. They are both trying to get the biggest slice of inheritance possible and for a man like that, Elinor Dashwood or Fanny Price would be perfectly useless.

So I am sure Caroline would be a desirable asset to someone who is not an Austen hero, because building connections, charming the right people, and understanding how to acquire more wealth is not what Jane Austen's men (and women) are into, but the wider world certainly was.

Darcy Howard Palmer | Childhood friend of both Joel Benson and Helene Starling, but nothing even happened between Hel and Joel until their early 20's, so Darcy had no reason to concern himself with all the trouble. Helene and Darcy's friendship slipped away after their high school years, but in the aftermath of her abusive relationship with Joel, Darcy reconnected with him and they became friends. Darcy still knows nothing about his current best mates past relationship or the fact that Joel is an actual piece of shit to this day and somehow getting away with it.

( I'm writing a drabble at the moment about Hel bumping into Darcy again and with a lot of encouragement from him, spilling the beans about her ex, because I ignore Darcy as part of her backstory too much! and he's nice, even if he befriended Joel again years on from their little childhood friends era.
