Two episodes in and I’m really enjoying this version of Mansfield Park so far. It is slow, which might normally bug me, but after the hectic pace of the two film adaptations, I’m really liking this one for all the little scenes from the book that were omitted from the movies, especially including the field trip to Sotherton and the scene of solidarity between Fanny and Mr Rushworth.
Speaking of which, Fanny is the right mix of shy and quiet and kind and lively, which is such a breath of fresh air. Edmund is actually pretty likable (though not as handsome as he is per the book). He’s kind to Fanny, yet unlike his successors, he’s neither secretly in love with her nor creepy. He’s just a good dude who’s being slowly blinded by Miss Crawford’s beauty.
Though I must say, I feel like this adaptation lowkey wants me to ship Fanny and Tom. They’ve only had a handful of moments, but they’ve been sweet and you can tell they’re friends.
Excited to continue!

Mansfield Park
Adaptions from 1983, 1999, 2007
The third of Jane Austen’s novels, first published in 1814, has had a few adaptions over the years. The ones pictures above are detailed below:
Mansfield Park (1983 Miniseries)
6 episodes x 50 min Written by Kenneth Taylor, directed by David Giles
Starring Sylvestra Le Touzel as Fanny Price, Nicholas Farrell as Edmund Bertram, Robert Burbage as Henry Crawford, Jackie Smith-Wood as Mary Crawford, Christopher Villiers as Tom Bertram,  Samantha Bond as Maria Bertram, among others
Mansfield Park (1999 Film)
The film departs from the original novel in several points. Written and directed by Patricia Rozema
Starring Frances O'Connor as Fanny Price, Jonny Lee Miller as Edmund Bertram,  Alessandro Nivola as Henry Crawford, Embeth Davidtz as Mary Crawford, James Purefoy as Thomas Bertram Jr., Victoria Hamilton as Maria Bertram, among others
Mansfield Park (2007 TV Film)
The film departs from the original novel in some points. Written by Maggie Wadey, directed by Iain B. MacDonald
Starring Billie Piper as Fanny Price, Blake Ritson as Edmund Bertram, Joseph Beattie as Henry Crawford, Hayley Atwell as Mary Crawford, James D'Arcy as Thomas Bertram, Michelle Ryan as Maria Bertram, among others
*****
I’m not big on M.P. and it’s been a while since I saw 2 of these, but I think each of these versions have their strong points (and also their own flaws).

"I do not wish to call you my friend because I hope to call you something infinitely more dear... I rode through the rain... I'd ride through worse than that if I could just hear your voice telling me that I might at least have some chance to win you... maybe it is our imperfections that make us perfect for one another. Marry me? Marry me, my wonderful, darling friend."
"But you... you were not deceived, were you? You held to what you knew in your heart. Constant, constant as the rain! What should I do if you should ever go away? My dearest Fanny."
"Fanny, I must confess something. I have loved you all my life... as a man loves a woman, as a hero loves a heroine, as I have never loved anyone in my entire life. I was so anxious to do what is right, that I forgot to do what is right. But if you choose me, after all my blundering and blindness, that will be a happiness which no description could reach."
"Oh, Elinor, I have longed for this moment from the instant of our first meeting, dear, dear Elinor. Would you... could you possibly... How could anyone help to love you?"
"I have come here with no expectations, only to profess, now that I am at liberty to do so, that my heart is, and always will be, yours."
"Miss Dashwood, Elinor, I came here with no expectation, after everything that has happened you have every right to turn me away this instant. But I cannot leave here without conveying the intensity of my feelings for you... Every day since I first saw you, my love for you has grown. Elinor, I have no right to hope, but I must ask: can you forgive me? Can you love me? Will you marry me?"
"I told him that I felt myself bound to you, by honor, by affection, and by a love so strong, that nothing he could do could deter me from... Before I go on I should tell you there is a pretty good chance he'll disinherit me. I fear I may never be a rich man, Catherine. Will you marry me, Catherine?"
"Elinor, I would not blame you if you wanted me to leave, but please allow me... my engagement to Lucy was a folly of youth. I never felt for her or for anyone what I feel for you. And I don't care what my stepsister thinks, or my stepmother, or anyone. I will not marry for fortune, nor out of obligation. I want to marry for love. And I love you, Elinor. I know my own happiness now. And in truth, I have known it for some time. It lies with you, Elinor. I love you with all my heart. I have been in love with you since... since we first met at Norland. I tried to deny it out of some misguided sense of duty or honor. But... but it would not be denied. My love for you has never wavered. And I will continue to love you until the day I die. I came here today with one errand in mind, which I will now perform. Elinor Dashwood, will you do me the great honor of becoming my wife?"
Miss Morland... don't be afraid. I promise not to oppress you with too much remorse, or too much passion. Though since you left us, the white rose bush has died of grief. Catherine, are you still a disgrace to your sex? Does your face express all that your heart feels, or may I hope that it holds a secret? You know that I do not need my father's permission to marry you."
*I'm taking the P&P ones away from you all because it is no fun when everyone votes P&P.

"We need a good Mansfield Park adaptation" it was made in 1983. "We need a good Persuasion adaptation" it was made in 1995. "We need a good Northanger Abbey adaptation" yes. Yes we do. But as long as people think they're funnier than Austen we're probably not going to get one.

As always, square dance was a delight. Came home after and watched another episode of 1983 Mansfield Park, BBC. And a glass of wine. Delightful topper to a lovely day.

One thing I've been thinking about, specifically with adaptations of Jane Austen novels, is that often her point is "Don't trust the Handsome and Charming guy" but adaptations refuse to make the Handsome Charming Guy sufficiently charming and handsome.
S&S 1995 will always hold a place in my heart because Greg Wise looks like a leading man. He's handsome, he's charming, they give him some great scenes with Marianne and they sell the fantasy of that couple. S&S 2008 was a disappointment to me because Willoughby looked slimy from Day 1. That's not right! Even Elinor was deceived by him! (even though she kept some doubts)
Wickham suffers from this a lot. Darcy may be handsome, but Wickham made the whole town in love with him. SHOW ME THAT! Show me even the old ladies fanning themselves when he comes into a room, show me Elizabeth who wants to dance half the night with him, show me every girl in town acting like he's the most handsome and charming man they've ever met in their lives! Wickham in 1995 P&P looks like a knock-off Darcy (sorry) and that's not right. Also, Elizabeth being downright smug when she learns the "truth" about Darcy and admiring Wickham more.
Now Mansfield Park's problem is kind of the opposite, because Henry Crawford is canonically NOT HOT but they keep making him hot (except in 1983, my love). But give me a man who can charm the pants off a married woman! That is what we need to see! It's basically the same thing, attractive on a surface level, slimy underneath, though for him the attraction is how he speaks. (Henry Crawford suffers from the same plight as Rochester, as an aside, stop casting hot men for the canonically not hot dude!)
These stories are based on the fact that the wrong option looks attractive. Make it so!

Welcome to the HOT JANE AUSTEN MEN bracket! Submissions for the Austen Silver Foxes Tournament are now open!
Voting on all the HOTTEST Jane Austen Gentlemen and Rakes from all the many TV and Film Jane Austen Adaptations ended earlier this year and after nearly two months of voting we have our Winner! Thank you everyone for taking part and all your propaganda now send me some for the old men!
All polls—including ongoing polls, previous rounds, mini ask polls—can be found in the #hotjaneaustenmenpoll tag. The Silver Fox Tournament will be tagged #janeaustensilverfoxes Every poll in the Hot Jane Austen Men Tournament is tagged with the hot regency man and the year his adaptation was made if you need to search for a hot man in particular.
FAQs:
"Will there be a Hot Jane Austen Women Tournament?" Yes! My aim is to start late September/early October baring any disasters - the Jane Austen Men Poll lasted about two months in the end (and I think the women may end up longer) so I thought it would be nice to bookend the year! This will also give me a break between this and the silver foxes poll.
"Can I submit hot Jane Austen men?” If it's for the Silver Fox Tournament - Yes! Fill out the google form here (or send me an ask and I may consider it too)
“I have additional propaganda for the hot men!” Great! Send me an ask, tag me in gifsets, fancams etc or reblog the poll and add your propaganda to it. Also feel free to send in any book propaganda!! I'll try to boost as much propaganda as possible
If you’re submitting propaganda for your hot man, I don’t accept propaganda that is of the actor outside of their Specific Jane Austen Adaptation but I do accept propaganda from them in their respective books. I would love to be tagged in gifsets and fancams, and I'd like to boost propaganda that tells us why your Jane Austen man is your favourite :)
I won’t post or boost negative propaganda. If you really hate that a certain hot man is winning, send me positive propaganda for their hot opponent. I may make exceptions if your propaganda is of another Austen character bad mouthing him though...
Why is the propaganda so uneven on this poll? To stay impartial I only add propaganda to the main poll that has been sent in before each round's polls open. If you submit any after then I will reblog or post and add to the winner's propaganda in the next poll. If it's uneven it's because you never sent any in, not because I'm being biased.
“Where is [my favourite Jane Austen man]?” Have you checked all the polls in the tag? Have you done a tag search for him? Only some of the actors are tagged but if you search for his adaptation and the year he was in it you should find him! If you still haven’t found him, he probably isn't in this poll.
“WHERE ARE THE HOT JANE AUSTEN MEN. I want to see all the hot men competing in one place!" -
The Final , Third Place Poll ,Semi-Finals ,Quarter-Finals ,Round Three Master List , Round Two Master List , Round One Master List
“Who was included in the original tournament ?” We started with 64 opponents readied their duelling pistols to defend their own hotness! I included men from Pride and Prejudice 1940/1995/2005, Sense and Sensibility 1971/1995/2008, Emma 1996/1996/2009/2020, Northanger Abbey 2007, Persuasion 1995/2007/2022 and Mansfield Park 1983/ 1999/2007 as well as a couple from Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, one from Sanditon and one from Love and Friendship/Lady Susan. Most are the main hero/anti-heroes but there are a few others scattered in too.
Have you included Spin Offs ?”  In the Silver Foxes Poll - Yes! However the only strictly none Jane Austen adaptation in the original poll were from Pride and Prejudice and Zombies because it is set in the correct time period, the characters are basically the same in terms of personality and I thought the casting was great! In terms of Sandition, Sidney Parker is the only man I have entered as he is mentioned in the book as well as the TV so sadly as much as I love the other Sanditon Men they aren't included!
"How have you paired up the men ?" I did start to try and vaguely seed the men but I will be honest I did get a bit slap dash towards the end which means a couple of the match-ups are maybe a bit too even but fun I hope!
If I see repetitive, trolling, and/or bigoted remarks in the comments, I may block you from this bracket. If you want to point out a hot man’s flaws or misdemeanours, that’s fine, but if I see consistent bad-faith trolling, you will be blocked.
On that note—if you have an issue with a poll, offer a solution! I'll do my best to keep the poll happy and fun, and I'll block people being dicks. If you don’t like a poll photo or a description, offer one I can use instead.
“My FAQ isn’t on here :(” send me an ask! I'd love to hear from you guys—just please check these basics first.
Thank you for being here! Enjoy the tournament.
And Thank You @hotvintagepoll for the inspiration!

Also I think k-dramas have influenced me to the point where I’m able to enjoy Mansfield Park (1983) this much, because before I used to absolutely yawn at those slow-paced pre-90s miniseries, but since getting into slow-paced dramas such as Tell Me That You Love Me and Would You Like A Cup of Coffee? I’ve developed a better appreciation for the little moments, a longer attention span, which is why I’m no longer bored at those long conversations and slow scenes in older shows.

Hey, how are you?
Thinking about Mollie's origin and culture, could you recommend a book or movie?
In fact, I'm going to start reading Jane Eyre under the influence of Still Waters ;)
hello! thank you for such an amazing question. since you said "origin and culture," it really got me thinking on what I would consider as influences for Still Waters and how I came to conceive of Mollie & the story in general...
I think there have been three main influences: literary classics, kdrama, and fanfiction--a mix of high and low culture. This mixture is reflected in Still Waters; readers may choose a surface-level read, or they may choose to read more deeply into the thematic elements... either is perfectly fine and neither is preferable to the other.
In each category, I'll list a few works with some relevant links to books, movies, TV shows, etc. You also might be interested in a post I made awhile back discussing books I've named in the work.
Literary classics
Jane Eyre, Charlotte Brontë
Gutenberg, BBC 2006, BBC 1983
Like Still Waters, Jane Eyre is a coming-of-age and romance with an older man with a dark past. I've read it many times by now, and it's so fascinating to observe how my relationship with it has changed--I used to think of it as the epitome of romance, but now I have much more nuanced thoughts about it. There have been many more adaptations than the ones I have listed; it is also fascinating to see how differently people interpret it... which dovetails my experience--this book seems to grow with people as they change.
Works by Jane Austen
Mansfield Park: Gutenberg, ITV
Persuasion: Gutenberg, ITV
Both of these works feature introvert women as protagonists; many people around them tend to underestimate them because they are naturally quiet and outwardly obedient. Persuasion is also the classic example of slow burn and mutual pining.
Woman Warrior, Maxine Hong Kingston
Goodreads
This work is a coming-of-age myth/memoir featuring a Chinese American female protagonist. While it's not a romance, Woman Warrior showed me how flimsy the divider between fantasy and reality can be, and how language can be used to blur the lines. It's also written in first person.
Korean Dramas
When I was younger, I watched many kdramas. I think what really impressed upon me at the time is how small gestures can mean so much to someone, the softness that men could exhibit, and unfortunately for all my readers, how much I loved the tension & anguished pain before the main couple finally got together (or not)...
Some kdramas I'd recommend: My Lovely Sam Soon, Coffee Prince, Crash Landing on You, To My Star 1 & 2.
Tumblr media
Fanfiction
Some of you might be amused to know my very first work on AO3 was an explicit M/M oneshot in 2014. I've been reading and writing fanfiction for a long time; in fanfiction, one could transcend the mores of traditional media and remake relationships to feature more equality, male leads that did not have toxic masculinity, etc...
When I watched Peaky Blinders for the first time, I immediately felt that Tommy's relationship with his mother was quite pivotal and yet never explored. I also hated that the Chinese people in the series were relegated to decorative ethnic roles. If they had swapped out Chinese for Japanese, it wouldn't have mattered a bit to the story... and so the idea for Still Waters came surprisingly quickly out of my discontent!
I would informally posit that the past few years of the rocketing popularity of spicy romance novels has largely been due to fanfiction and how it was able to push the boundaries and show publishers what people in our subpopulation actually liked... it was fanfiction where I read my first slow burns coupled with expertly written smut that to this day, are quite a bit better than what I read in a traditionally published book.
Here are some fanfictions I'd recommend:
[Redemption of Love] Fandom: Lord of the Rings, Pairing: Legolas/Thranduil
[Going Live] Fandom: EXO; Pairing: Kai/Reader
[Redamancy] Fandom: James Bond, Pairing: James Bond/Q
[Draco Malfoy and the Mortifying Ordeal of Being in Love] Fandom: Harry Potter, Pairing: Draco/Hermione
[Beginning and End] Fandom: Harry Potter, Pairing: Draco/Hermione
[my life is better when we're together] Fandom: Kuroko no basuke, Pairing: Midorima/Kise
[In Darkest Knights, The Brightest Sparks] Fandom: Batman, Pairing: Batman/Harley Quinn
