A rhetorical question: Why is it that the most succinct and clear ideas can be so deep and complex? Perhaps the answer lies somewhere within as we behind to dig a bit deeper: perhaps, when considering such ideas, we begin to take into account the depth and complexity of who we each, individually, have come to be and and continuously are becoming. Be kind to yourselves. It can be a path toward showing kindness towards others… and perhaps even to those who are not showing much kindness toward others. #Repost @jeanneheilemanyoga ・・・ Sending you wishes for a lovely Saturday. a 7 minute read that could change your life...
Self knowledge is power over our behavior.
I listened to the SAVVY PSYCHOLOGIST: 18 Beliefs That Are Ruining Your Life by Dr. Monica Johnson on the Quick and Dirty Tips podcast. She talks about schemas, which I knew little about. I found her descriptions empowering and worthy of sharing. For more details on each one, I’ve provided the links below. A schema is a stable and enduring negative pattern that develops during childhood or…

‘Hope’ is the theme for today and well it got me thinking how my own feelings about hope have slightly changed. I read a book which got into my hands years ago, but I never even had the interest to read. Until as the title suggested “when things fell apart” by Pema Chödron. It even took me a while to get into it, probably because at that stage I was in the midst of it falling it apart but not realising this. The chapter on hopelessness and death probably had the most profound effect on me. It starts with the quote: “ If we’re willing to give up hope that insecurity can be exterminated, then we can have the courage to relax with the groundlessness of our situation. This is the first step on the path.” Ad what a step on my path it turned out to be, because until this point I had only ever thought of hope as a good thing, as the wheel that keeps me moving forward even when I don’t actually it was moving anywhere or even moving backwards.
What I understood or interpreted from this chapter is that hope is the very last thing that humans are able to rely on and thus not able to accept/ appreciate the suffering they may well be experiencing. Thus to start again is to completely remove any shimmer of hope, therefore expectation and to think of suffering and pain, not as a curse but a gift. That hope rubs us of the present (the where we are right now) and with hope will always come fear.
At first I was skeptical. In fact I thought about all those moments hope had given humans this anchor to keep reaching and given them this spiritual energy to keep going. But the moment I was in and how I was feeling (which was hopeful to have hope one day), made me realise how little I was actually living and appreciating my present days. With living through grief I either spent a great deal ruminating on the past or daydreaming of some far distance future. The truth is my heart had been broken through loss, through goodbyes and letting go. I knew with death, that you could not hold onto any hope but it wasn’t just death I experienced loss, it was also through a break up and moving away. Everything that was familiar, that no longer was there but somewhere. And this type of loss, inevitably involved hope to some extent, whether I wanted to admit to it or not. To some extent it actually does but very different. Almost a year ago there wasa day, a moment in this day where I had reached my lowest low. Everything really did for me at this point fall apart. And I mean almost everything. The good things did not feel good, it felt empty and hollow. But through others, and really amazing kindness and help, bit by bit my gratitude felt more and more alive.
So when I read this book, I knew I had to give up hope, I had to give up this daydreaming visuals of what the future maybe, of people who could still be but to look at the loss and heartbreak as an opportunity to start again. Only it could never start from scratch per see, but I could try and carry on with life differently, to try and focus on the here and now. And this thinking started changing expectations. I had noticed I let go more and more expectations, especially when it came to others. And to make a change I can and could only really start with myself. It is a working progress but I have noticed a difference in how I react or actually don’t react to situations where once I would have.
But coming back to this notion of hope, I don’t see it as this thing to completely sacrifice, in fact, on my bad days, I often think that there are good days ahead because I know where there have been bad days before, there have also been good days ahead so why would it be any different now? But more so the resilient heart in me, tries to see the goodness in situations even when totally bleak. Even when people do hurtful things, it doesn’t make them bad people in most cases, but hurt people who hurt people. And if we are honest I am one of these people who have hurt people through my own hurt. Hope is a very personal, spiritual thing and for each person it may feel and be used in different ways. But my own notion of hope had undergone considerable change this year and will continue to do so, I am sure.

Start where you are. This is very important. Meditation practice is not about later, when you get it all together and you're this person you really respect.   You may be the most violent person in the world --that's a fine place to start. That's a very rich place to start-- juicy, smelly. You might be the most depressed person in the world, the most addicted person in the world, the most jealous person in the world. You might think that there are no others on the planet who hate themselves as much as you do. All of that is a good place to start. Just where you are --that's the place to start.

We can suppress anger and aggression or act it out, either way making things worse for ourselves and others. Or we can practice patience: wait, experience the anger and investigate its nature. ~ Pema Chödrön . The Six Realms of Samsara in Tibetan Buddhism are represented in the Wheel of Life thangka painting.

One of my favorite Buddhist concepts beautifully expressed by Pena Chödrön. . #Repost @onbeing ・・・ Pema Chödrön’s (@anipemachodron) book “When Things Fall Apart” has become a dear companion to many people in times of crisis. It’s a work, like all works of spiritual genius, that speaks from the nooks and crannies and depths of a particular tradition — while conveying truths about humanity writ large. In this week’s show, Krista and @devendrabanhart reflect on the book and what it means to be alive and looking for meaning right now. Link in @onbeing bio. #onbeing #podcast #podcasts #newepisode #pemachodron #buddhism #buddhist #meditate #mindfulness #love #meditation #devendrabanhart #musician #music #whenthingsfallapart #crisis #humanity #humantruths #reflection #wisdom #conversation #joy #misery #grief #relief #healing #companion #book https://www.instagram.com/p/CAowlk6j_72AXHyYyd6bPjfa-hl5sR71243h_M0/?igshid=10eogm6mhuaeh

A Favorite quote from Pema Chödrön on what it means to be fully alive.
