Honestly, the craziest part of accessibility is that there aren't many abled people (and disabled people who aren't disabled in Every Way Possible) who wouldn't benefit from any of the accessibility options out there

ALT text has made it so much better to navigate image-based pages! I'm not visually-impared, but tumblr is terrible at loading images, and I'm not always connected to WiFi. People who add ALT text make it easy to satiate my curiosity when images don't load! This, coupled with actually learning how blind and visually-impared people navigate the online world, has inspired me to do my best to emulate the things I find helpful, even if the way it helps me is very different than theirs. Having a sense of scale in how it helps me versus how it actually makes the internet usable to the blind and visually-impared is something I do try to keep in mind.

Navigating a world with accessible options is primarily going to help the disabled, and it's imperative to keep this in mind. I do think, though, that illustrating just how much accessibility impacts even abled people's lives can help inspire people to think, "wow, I can't imagine a world without [accessibility option] and I don't need it, but it makes life so much easier." The more I interact with accessibility options I don't need, I still find it so helpful. I can't even imagine how amazing it is when you do need that accessibility and it's actually provided to you.

I don't think that abled people should only be in it for themselves. Again, accessibility should put disabled needs first and foremost. But I can't help but wonder how many people you can get to understand this by first saying how it impacts them, too.

Costa is in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney with good friends Manu and Jude, lending a hand with a garden project for a neighbour. Their mission is to set a tea patch and wicking bed planters for a member of Manu’s Farm It Forward movement, Riri, who is vision impaired.

Riri explains that she lost her eyesight more than 30 years ago but she never had the courage or confidence to walk down her street on her own, as there are no footpaths. But when she heard that Farm It Forward had set up at the end of her street she took the plunge to walk down there. “I met Manu and that’s how it all started,” she says.

“When you can’t see, you tend to stay indoors a lot,” Riri says, “but this will get me out.”

To create two no-dig patches, Manu and Jude first lay down some cardboard across the whole area to help suppress weeds. The sticky tape and staples have to be removed first. Next, they build two long rows of compost and soil mix to form the raised no-dig beds, leaving a pathway in the middle between the beds that they then cover with mulch.

At the end, two wicking beds are made up and planted out.

When the work is complete, the team invites Riri out to help her explore her new gardens.

Companies using """"""""AI"""""""" chatbots in place of customer service (usually with a veneer of pretending you are actually speaking to a real person, which might not be so immediately obvious to more tech illiterate people) pisses me off so bad because they are just SO fundamentally useless. The only information it can tell you is information more efficiently communicated with a FAQ page, and information that is Wrong because current chatbot technology is, in fact, not even slightly 'intelligent' and pretty damn bad at giving accurate answers to anything but the simplest questions.

Like there's no point to it besides hoping onto the flashy artificial 'intelligence' gimmick and paying for less customer service work hours, and so many companies will not only have this feature but make their actual customer service prohibitively difficult to find (and usually involving a labyrinth of automated phone menu systems that you have to navigate correctly in order to get to a person).
