Scarred by more than just the pit

Jason Peter Todd, after his resurrection, was left with a lasting scar; strands of white hair, bleached by the lazarus pit.

I propose something more.

Whenever Bruce sees the boy's poor, bloodied, battered, face, it reminds him of two failures; Harvey Dent, and the Robin he failed on the day. Whenever he sees Jason, he can't get the picture out of his head; holding a Robin missing half his face. Jason wasn't just left with some white strands of hair- he was left with a face one half human, and then the other a skull covered in blood and pieces of half-rotted flesh, with scraps of skin still hanging on, and a bloodshot eyeball that can never stop staring. Half of his hair is gone, only a spikey hairdo on the more human side of his face, with white strands of hair at the ends- little hair, but hair. He looks more like the former D.A than Bruce's second Robin. He can see Jason's almost shattered skull, his broken flesh, and his cracked or missing teeth whenever he stares the boy in his horrific eyes. That's why Jason wore the helmet. To hide the wounds. Some citizens of Gotham still mistake him for two-face, when he's simply wearing a mask and not the helm. Maybe that's why Jason and Harvey get along so well; both scarred and 'failed' by Bruce. Although Jason still holds a grudge against Bruce, Harvey tries to make him forget it; Harvey and Jason have similar scars, so Harvey tries to help Jason with his. Harvey's grudge against Bruce is long gone, but Jason can't forgot what Bruce had done. Not with the mark- the brand that the Joker left on his face. He'll never forget that, and can never forgive that.

A half-missing face is much more than a few strands of white hair.

it takes 6 guards to sedate and drag two face off the joker the next time two face sees him and for the rest of their lives as soon as harvey sees the joker he goes after him like a rabid dog.

Just want you to know, bruharvey is kinda already implied by DC. Frank Miller's works Year One and Dark Knight Returns have panels that include homoerotic subtext between them, such as the one with Batman hiding under the desk when Gordon comes in as if they have a secret affair, and Harvey later telling him to "come out", and another panel with Bruce comparing him and Harvey to lovers: "we tumble like lovers". The Jekyll and Hyde comic (notoriously bad btw, do not read) has panels oozing with homoeroticism of Harvey being super affectionate to Bruce. In the Telltale game, the player as Bruce has the option to give Harvey flowers and Bruce says to him, "you'll always be beautiful to me, Harv". The Face to Face arc has Harvey saying he and Bruce went on a date. The Batman vs Two-Face movie jokes about their relationship: "Oh my! Two handsome bachelors who are still best friends after all these years? Oh! It's enough to give a girl the vapors." And you probably already know this but in Detective Comics #1063, a love song plays over their reunion. The BTAS tie-in comics and BTAS itself has a lot of implications of something between them as well. There's just generally a lot of subtext in most Batman media featuring the two. Also this is stupid but it is notable how Harvey is usually Bruce's "damsel in distress", a trope usually relegated to female love interests for men to rescue, and Harvey as a damsel for Bruce surprisingly occurs in a lot of Batman media.

Frank Miller. The first person you decided to list on here is Frank Miller. Known raging racist and misogynist Frank Miller. Frank Miller who, while he did a lot of admirable work on The Dark Knight Returns and Batman: Year One, also wrote and drew one of the worst, most vile comic books out there in Holy Terror (No, not Batman: Holy Terror, just Holy Terror). Now I will admit that I can't personally verify that he's a homophobe (I CAN tell you that he used 'gay' and 'queer' in a very slurry context back in All Star Batman and Robin, but that was also made in the time when using those words like that was more commonplace and seen as acceptable), but I have doubts that he's an ally either. And even if he is, I don't think that we should want him anywhere near us or our community. I wouldn't chalk any homoerotic subtext in anything Frank Miller has written as being intentional, but rather being a result of that toxic obsession with masculinity that Frank Miller is known for indulging. Because we all know that toxic masculinity when taken to its extreme somehow always manages to circle back around to being pretty darn gay without the people perpetuating it ever realizing it. So... Just... Not a great place to start... >.< Also if you're going to take Frank's usage of simile and metaphor on face value as evidence of Bruce and Harvey being into each other... Then that means that Bruce also probably wants to fuck buildings... >.>

Huh. I've been playing the first Telltale game and I don't remember the option of being able to give Harvey flowers. Damn shame too because with how I play Bruce, he's hopelessly in love with Harvey lol (Unlike >90% of players, I DID NOT sleep with Selina!) I feel pretty convinced that they must have wanted to make Harvey a romancable option in the Telltale game, but that DC didn't let them.

I do agree with you that there's a fair bit of subtext between Harvey and Bruce out there... I know that it's there and I do see it. But we deserve better than just subtext. We shouldn't take our subtext and just be happy with the scraps we're given. If any of this is intentional (which at least some of it must be), then it just isn't enough. Headcanon is good and all, but I don't want this to be baiting and teasing that goes nowhere. As a minimum they should confirm one or both of them as bi, even if they don't get together. We as a community deserve better than just subtext and teasing! We deserve actual canonical characterization, dammit! And I think that we can actually get it! I think that Bruce and Harvey getting together would just be the right call for them narratively speaking and so want it to actually happen! Make it happen, DC you cowards!

harvey as the friend bruce loves and regrets leaving behind the most and who thereafter exists in a corner of bruce’s mind, forever encroaching upon him, forever haunting him, forever reminding bruce that a day will come where all will be exposed and harvey will know that he wasn’t there for him, that he abandoned him, that for all of his duty and martyrdom he did not go the extra mile to save him in the aftermath (though bruce always held back just a fraction when they came to blows, always exercised patience and extended an open hand when he felt glimmers of harvey peek out from beneath the surface), and it will all fall apart while bruce welcomes the damnation he knew he was always due because he failed to save a brother, and harvey will look at that acceptance on his face and weep bc even after all this time bruce is still who he’s been reaching for within the recesses of that darkness.. sorry if this does not line up with the original lore btw am pulling my muslim card 🙈

HIIII I FUCKING DID IT

Five hours ago this had seemed like a good idea. Harvey had wanted to watch something scary but Bruce hadn’t wanted to watch a movie-movie, so they’d compromised with a documentary about sharks. Which was fine in theory, but about five seconds in Bruce had interrupted the unsettling cello music to say that actually, this was deliberately misleading and actually pretty insidious, and that sharks are an animal just like any other so it’s really not fair that they’re so heavily demonised especially given the number of sharks killed by humans per year compared to the number of fatal shark attacks. At which point Harvey had asked if he wanted to watch something else.

“No, I just. It’s–” Bruce sighed and crossed his arms. “It’s fine. I don’t care. It’s probably, like, factually accurate, it’s just presented in a biased way I don’t agree with. Whatever.”

And Harvey had laughed and turned up the volume and pulled his legs up under himself. The flaw in the plan wasn’t inherent to the plan itself. Bad documentary aside, they’re having fun. They’re not stoned or drunk or anything because neither of them really felt like it, but they ordered pizza after the first documentary ended and just sort of… stayed on the channel. It’s sort of background noise at this point, the various instruments and calm voices describing the islands and reefs.

It’s nice, honestly. In times like these, Harvey wishes he was someone else, someone who can just enjoy sitting in silence without feeling the need to talk or move. They’ve both had a long week, and they both needed this, it’s just–

It’s just that there’s no way he can relax with Bruce in the room. It’s just that Bruce has been perfectly still this whole time, when Harvey has kept shifting around trying to subtly get further away while they both slowly migrate towards the middle of the shitty couch. It’s just that Harvey keeps sneaking glances at Bruce and there’s no way Bruce hasn’t noticed.

Everything is conspiring against him. Worst crush since middle school – most inopportune crush, too, because it’s the first time he’s had an actual best friend since middle school – and here they are, alone in the dark in their shared room. 

It’s been worse, for sure. Harvey has seen Bruce shirtless, he’s heard Bruce bring dates back here, that sort of thing. But it’s always been fleeting, or something he can ignore. This is five hours a foot away from Bruce, and the light from the tv keeps dancing across his face that makes the blue of his eyes look invisible.

It’s honestly cruel, thinks Harvey. It’s not, not really, just him being unable to have the right reaction to anything. He can’t accept friendship without wanting to devour it, and he accepted that long ago. Being dramatic about it is the only thing keeping him grounded right now, but it’s untenable and he’s been arguing both sides in his head for hours now, so he turns his attention to the tv.

Nothing sinks in. Harvey watches a small octopus get washed back and forth as the narration slowly tunes itself out. It’s then that his exhaustion decides to kick in and bit by bit his body stops feeling tangible. He can feel where he ends, but there’s nothing actually inside him, just a big empty void where a real person should be.

The screen’s a little blurry now. Harvey shuts his eyes, tries to remind himself that he’s here, that he needs to get it together for just a bit longer because he’s not alone - and Bruce’s fingers come to rest over his own.

It’s so much of a relief that Harvey almost wants to cry. They’ve trial runned this; Bruce hates people touching him no matter how close they are, but he knows Harvey needs it to feel like he’s tethered to something. Hence the hand touch.

“Hey,” says Bruce quietly.

Harvey takes a long while to answer, but it’s time he needs to come back down into himself. “Hi.”

“I’ve been meaning to ask you…”

Bruce doesn’t finish the sentence. His hand hasn’t left Harvey’s. Oh god.

“Go on?”

“What are you–” Bruce stops for a moment and visibly makes an effort to relax. “What are you doing over winter break?”

It’s a normal question. It doesn’t mean anything. “Uh, nothing, probably? Going home?”

“Do you have to?” Bruce asks quickly, like he had the question ready before Harvey had finished talking.

Harvey thinks about it. It’s not like his dad actively wants him there, but where else would he go? He can’t just not go home, give no reason for it and spend a month fucking… wandering the streets? In a motel?

“Probably, yeah. It’s not like I have anywhere else I need to be.”

There has to be another layer to this. Surely, surely Bruce is going somewhere with this line of questioning, and he’s not just making Harvey think about it for no reason.

“Do you…” Bruce starts, then falters and tries again. “You don’t have to, obviously, I’m not going to force you to– Harvey.”

“Yes?” Harvey’s caught between wanting to laugh at Bruce, just a little, and feeling like a prey animal, and it shows in his voice, the nervous tremor of it.

“Do you want to maybe stay with me at the Manor over break?” he asks finally, looking at something that isn’t there over Harvey’s shoulder, the closest he can probably come to eye contact right now.

Holy shit. Of course Harvey wants to stay with him. He’d stay with Bruce in a shitty one bedroom apartment in Connecticut if Bruce asked.

“Like, Wayne Manor?” he asks.

“No, the other manor that I have that just never came up,” deadpans Bruce, tension abating.

“In all fairness, I wouldn’t be surprised if you did have one of those.”

“Yeah, well, I meant Wayne Manor. Where I live. All the time.”

Harvey smiles. It’s shit like this, like opening his house up with no ulterior motive, that makes Harvey feel like his whole chest is nothing but feeling. “I’d love to,” he says.

Bruce smiles, and it actually reaches his eyes, and Harvey gets the feeling that everything’s going to be alright.
