Opinions On These Fucking Things

Faust believes those to be the chicks of a Pukeko bird, also known as the Australian Swamp Hen. As the name suggests, they are known to live in swamps and marshes, and breed in social groups rather than male and female groups.

I've never seen one of those fucked up things in my life. Get it out of our asks.

Miss Faust, may I ask how you know what that is? I've yet to see one in our journey yet. Also, what is an Australia? Is it like a unique food that everyone's talking about these days~?

FYI, she's moving to Australia for college, so you can be assured I shared my Australia posts with her she is SO prepared she won't say marmite instead of vegemite and she knows the Wibbles are inherently sexual. SOUTH AFRICA (I've only had a teeny weeny bit of cheap ass wine so far):

There a lot of white people there it's ineffable. There are enough of them there that my cousin regularly talks about not ever marrying someone who doesn't have some masala.

Afrikaans is a gorgeous language. I thought my cousin was showing me her Afrikaans notes once. She wasn't. It was her English notes, she just has the most illegible yet neat handwriting in the world.

Fiona and Cake spoilers seriously

(Something I noticed abt Betty and Simons relationship)

I love Betty and Simon’s relationship, I think their back story is so cute and romantic and all that lovely stuff don’t get me wrong.

But there’s this under tone of Betty constantly giving things up for Simon and we don’t really talk about it a lot???

Like, Betty let Simon have his moment with the artifact and the pubic, she also doesn’t go to her trip in favor of going on an expedition with Simon. Then when she goes to leave again she stays for Simon.

Even Fiona is like “you went with her on the bus?” And Simon just looks all confused like “what? No, why would I do that?” Like- hello???

Then after that she gave up her entire life and mind to get Simon back to the point where she literally says “I don’t know who I am without him anymore.” And that just sucks! Since the beginning Betty has been the one giving up the most, her mind, her own possible career, and it’s a story of love of course and it’s very sweet but it’s also a story of sacrifice.

Their love wasn’t a perfect solution, it was already sort of imbalanced when it started and I lowkey love how we see those cracks even before they’re together.

Again, I love their relationship and I think it’s sweet. I just think we should talk about Betty’s side more, especially when she tells a story of what most women do in relationships, sacrifice.

As the US election closes in and the final states take to the polls, I want to remind people to turn out and protest.

Yep, protest. Strike, disrupt, be out there on the street regardless of who you voted for or who wins. I expect to see you all out there demanding; access to abortion nation wide, protections against discrimination, free universal healthcare, a free Palestine, anti war, prison abolition, to increase the minimum wage, and for a US free of the electoral college and that counts votes as votes.

Yes, you can say "you should vote for Harris" and do so as much as you like, but do not forget the power you have through your own everyday actions away from the polls and that of protesting. Do not use the excuse that your right to vote means it's somehow more foundational or important than the right to protest. You have the ability to create direct action and that is so so important, please don't just expect a rich representative to stick to their promises every time you vote; you have power too, never forget that.

This system will not change until we, the people, make it. There is NO representative that can ever change the system that allowed them in, and likewise; this system will never allow a candidate that would stop it from continuing and/or ensuring its designated purpose of oppression and subjugation. Resist, regardless of the results.

Long live the resistance.

FYI if you're watching MasterChef Australia, the Sri Lankan Australian contestant Savi is a friend of mine and kind of a stealth idol because everything I seem to be online (a ball-busting, bombastic, proudly brown, unapologetically fat, sexy decolonizer lady) she actually is irl. It's funny because she was a few grades below me and found me intimidating when we were in school and now I'm the one perpetually in awe of her. Do watch if you can and root for her! She's a delight!

tell me about a fun bird please

Oh do I have the fun bird for you!

So in my local area we have a few different large parrot species, but the two relevant to this story are Sulfur Crested Cockatoos and Long Billed Corellas. They’re temperamental destructive birds that I absolutely adore.

Now the theory I have goes, is that during nesting time, there’s a limited amount of hollows in my area (less old growth trees nowadays, more urbanisation of the rural area I live in) and as such they’re in high demand and fiercely competed over.

And sometimes you can get one of the species chasing the other out and off their eggs and then laying their eggs in the nest, eventually raising both their young and the orphaned eggs. And when this happens the resulting adult is more interested in a mate from their adoptive flock rather than they own species. Which is what leads us to our Fun Bird.

A wild Hybrid of the two!

This guy has a weird mixed phenotype of the two original species, with the markings, blue eye ring, and crest shape of a long billed corella and the beak, crest colour and size of a Sulfur crested cockatoo, and a mix of the red and yellow in colouration that results in this lovely orange. They follow the local migration of the Sulfur Crested Cockatoo and Long Bill Corella flock and as spring starts, they arrive in my backyard.

As such, I have a number of photos of them, and even watched one year when they had a mate with another Sulfur Crested Cockatoo.

Now before you say, “Are you sure this isn’t some stray citron crested cockatoo?” Believe me that was my first guess when this unusual bird appeared in our backyard. But the hybrid only resembles that species in crest colouration and otherwise none of their markings, size or body shape match up with otherwise described species. And it’s also too far south for a Citron, so the current explanation for their unique appearance is a hybrid.

I would love to have the chance to actually study them up close, perhaps even testing to see if they are truly a hybrid and where they go when they’re not hanging out in my backyard but alas I’m not a bird scientist (yet) just a big bird enthusiast. I’ve even painted this unique visitor to my backyard
