Israel is a worsening problem for Palestinians and the world. This festering boil in the Middle East has reached a critical stage. The Rural Vs City Divide

The facts are that people who live in large cities have to get along. The material reality of sharing that space and the facilities between millions of people makes that so. Things are never perfect, but tolerance is the name of the game, more generally. This differs from sparsely populated country areas, where all that space houses far fewer folk. The rural vs city divide is, in many ways, predicated upon such realities. We see a political divide on this basis too. In Australia, the right wing LNP Coalition holds bugger all metropolitan seats and this situation has crystalised further of late. Why is this so?

Country Vs Metro Identity Politics

Those fewer people living in rural regions, away from the big cities, are, most usually, not exposed to large numbers of immigrants and folk from other cultures to their own. Living with your own kind does not make for tolerant folk it seems. Why else would political parties like Pauline Hansons’ and white supremacist views attract such support in these relatively sparsely populated regions? The rural vs city divide is very apparent in America, where red vs blue states split that nation. The blue states contain much larger metropolitan based populations than the more rural red states in the US. Again, the politics reflect very different attitudes toward race and ideas about national identity there too. Donald Trump dines out on besmirching big cities like New York and LA to the crowds at his rallies in red states.

Vilifying Big Cities For Votes The producers at TV stations do the same with their sensational reporting of incidents of violence in the news. I call it crime porn for oldies, where a single terrible occurrence from a population of millions is splashed across video screens and newspapers to boost clicks and sales. The political parties pick up on this and run ‘tough on violent crime’ campaigns based on the public’s engagement with such fare. Meanwhile, the actual statistics continue to show that the number of violent crimes in cities have been falling for years. The art of politics is getting folk to care about what you are saying. Find an emotive issue and run with it – blaming the other side for being soft on crime. This has been going on for forever, by the way. People living in smaller towns are vulnerable to those fanning fears about the dangers prevalent in big cities. In reality, it is all a matter of population size determining the frequency of incidents of crime. The TV news reports do not carry caveats declaring that this incident occurred from a population of several million inhabitants. Just like the ads for lottery prizes in the millions don’t carry warnings in large print about the very slim mathematical chance you have of winning. It is a number’s game and people living in small towns are not familiar with such huge numbers of people and what that necessarily means. Red States & Their Slaver State Roots Encouraging folk to believe that you can live in a modern nation, as if it was a little country town, is fraudulent and irresponsible. We all need to learn how to get along, rather than promote isolationist politics which ferment divisiveness. You cannot turn back time, whatever the Trump circus may, otherwise, suggest. The US has some very real problems around race and white supremacist attitudes among some of its population. This is a nation that emerged out of a lengthy period of enslaving millions of Africans and Indigenous Americans. Its whole economy was based on this abomination for centuries. The cultural roots of such abhorrence run deep. The southern states kept up this exploitation of African Americans long past the Civil War via the Black Codes and Jim Crow. It was not until the civil rights movement of the 1960s that things really began to shift in the south. Much of Trump’s red state support is located in these regions. Australia has had Anglo-settler issues of its own over the journey with Blackbirding and the unpaid servitude of Aboriginal people in its rural areas. Racism toward non-whites, especially in country regions, remains not too far under the surface among a section of inhabitants.

A White Only Nation There are people who believe that their land or nation should be for whites only. This is like some sort of mental illness, in my opinion, and is a throwback to a time when ignorance prevailed over scientific fact. Human beings are all pretty much the same and you can learn to get along, when push goes beyond shove to acting like grownups. Children and groups of teenagers pick on what’s different to them – because they are immature and insecure about their own identity. Nationalists and Nazis are, likewise, at their core insecure about who they are. Attacking others, demonising others, to define who you are is pretty poor sport, indeed. Donald Trump plays this demonising blame game to the detriment of innocent people and to the world. These tariffs and this trade war are at the highest levels since 1935. If you draw a map with all the black people in one seat, rather than spread out over a number of seats, you can limit the voting effect of those black voters. Cheating has never been far from those who make politics their main bag. Dutton brought crazy irresponsible policies to the election like turning Australia nuclear. The LNP brought out Donald Trump’s campaign director to Australia to advise them and this proved to be a very bad idea. The voters rejected the Libs big time, especially in the cities. We Can All Get Along Exposure to what’s different, to people from other cultures, can in the right environment change the attitudes and beliefs of locals. By the right environment I mean one where economic scarcity is not preying upon folk. We can all get along if we have enough; and there are not political liars and scaremongers poisoning the well. The rural vs city divide does not have to be a death sentence for hope and unity. Country folk get rightly pissed off by the lack of services they have to bear in comparison to what’s in the city. But the trade off for that is living cheek by jowl with millions of other people from all over the planet. Put away your puritan pants and get on the bus with the rest of us. Red & White Tears Stain My Swan’s Scarf In 2025

What a crap footy season it has been! If you bleed red and white in the AFL it has been an annus horribilis. The Giant defeat to end slim final hopes left a bitter taste in my mouth. Sydney Swans halftime heroes and full time failures. Indeed, red and white tears stain my Swan’s scarf in 2025. Not even the return of Errol Gulden could turn this season around. Isaac Heeney’s Colgate smile, similarly, could not breathe enough fresh confidence into a losing campaign. Even the bloody Red Cross weren’t able to transfuse life into an injury riddled Dean Cox debut season as head coach.

Sydney Swan’s Floundering Footy Year Stained With Failures

We supporters are unused to the view from the bottom half of the AFL ladder. A couple of decades of unrelenting success will do that. Red and white is usually associated with victory. This year was an anomaly, an aberration. Do you hear me Dean Cox? Swans will rise above them all. There are, however, no guarantees in football or life. We need some new talent.
