Hey just a general PSA from someone officially diagnosed and documented:

Now is not the time to seek out an autism diagnosis.

RFK's plans have been made very clear and any diagnosis you do get will get you put on this "national disease registry" they're proposing.

Trust me when I say I completely understand the need for accommodations and a better understanding of yourself, but if you have gone this long without being diagnosed, you will be better off waiting.

Furthermore, listen to and advocate for folks who are diagnosed, especially folks with higher support needs. They'll be the first ones targeted for whatever bullshit "experimental treatments" the government tries to push.

Stay safe and look out for your neighbor.

Let's talk about mind melds for a minute

I’ll state up front that this meta involves a lot of speculation, but it makes for some interesting headcanon fodder. 

In Star Trek: The Original Series, we see Spock mind meld with Kirk a total of four times. In a mind meld, thoughts can be shared between two entities. One’s mind may be probed and/or manipulated. It is considered a private, intimate action among Vulcans, and Spock only performs such a mind meld when it is necessary. 

The first time Spock mind melds with Kirk is during “The Paradise Syndrome.” Kirk is suffering memory loss. Spock reaches into his confused mental state and manipulate’s Kirk’s mind to restore his memories. 

In this instance, Kirk appears to fight the meld. He knows only the persona of Kirok until Spock finishes his task. 

Spock later performs a mind meld on Kirk during “Spectre of the Gun,” as well as Scotty and Dr. McCoy. His task is to convince each of them that their surroundings are an illusion so that they may not be harmed by them. 

Again, this is an instance of Spock manipulating Kirk’s mind. He does the same with Scotty and McCoy, focusing on one simple truth: they are not at risk as long as they do not believe that they are. This is a fascinating scene to watch, and I can’t quite do it justice in this description, but I’ll try. 

He first melds with Scotty, who looks vaguely uncomfortable. Spock is speaking slowly and clearly at this point. McCoy is his second target. Spock and Scotty do not have as close of a relationship as Spock and McCoy, and it is evident in this scene. His voice is lower, he stands closer, the entire process feels more intimate. When he proceeds to meld with Kirk, his voice is barely above a whisper. The nature of mind sharing facilitates this display of the natural progression of Spock’s interpersonal relationships, his most significant being that which he shares with Kirk. 

The third mind meld we see occurs in “Requiem for Methuselah.” This is an interesting case, and I talk about it more in depth here. 

Spock is, once again, manipulating Kirk’s memories. He aims to erase a painful memory, easing his friend’s heartbreak. This is notable for being the only mind meld performed for purely emotional reasons. 

Up until now, one factor has been consistent with all of these instances: the mind meld is one-sided. 

The final mind meld occurs in the last episode of the original series, “Turnabout Intruder.” Kirk is trapped in the body of Janice Lester, an ex girlfriend trying to usurp his position as captain. Kirk asks Spock to meld with him, hoping to convince him that he is, in fact, Jim Kirk in Janice Lester’s body. 

This time, the role of the meld has changed. Rather than probing Kirk’s mind, Spock is simply reading it. Rather than receiving, Kirk is giving. He is projecting his thoughts to Spock, who instantly believes him. 

It is interesting to observe how the joining of the minds progresses throughout the series. First, we have Spock melding with someone who is essentially a complete stranger, having no memories at that point. In the second instance, the meld reveals an emotional connection that is unique to Spock and Kirk. In the third instance, Spock acts out of emotion alone, which is a significant departure from his characterization in earlier episodes. We see that his relationship with Kirk has caused him to grow and change. In the final instance, Kirk reciprocates the meld, forming a partnership of equals. 

Similar to the development of a relationship, is it not? 

But wait, I have one more question!

After the final mind meld has occurred, Spock puts his complete faith in Kirk. He never doubts him for a moment, even when facing a charge of mutiny. Kirk gains this trust as he projects his thoughts into Spock’s mind for the first time. 

So what could Spock have seen in Kirk’s mind? What could Kirk have shown him to make him so damn sure of Kirk’s true identity? It is unlikely that it was a memory, because Spock had noted that it was possible for Lester to have learned of any events that had happened on the mission. So it must have been something else, something that was a part of Kirk’s consciousness. An emotion, perhaps? His relationship to Spock? 

This is where fans may speculate, and where headcanons may be formed. What did Spock see? We’ll never know. But whatever it was, it apparently made him comfortable to reach out and grab Kirk’s hand:
