I feel like Fruits Basket had a missed opportunity to write a great arc for Yuki instead of him ending up with Machi. And I LOVE Machi and their romance is really cute but I didn't feel satisfied with that ending for Yuki.
When I first watched Fruits Basket I was sure that Yuki was supposed to be queer-coded and his arc about self acceptance and love was him coming out of the closet.
The reason for that is because of the way Yuki is constantly presented and the way he reacts to other people.
Yuki always gets mad at Kyo for calling him "girly boy" or "pretty boy".
He tries to put up at tough persona to try to appear more masculine.
He has a fanclub with both girls AND boys crushing on him.
Whenever he "flirts" with Tohru it would come off as awkward (I know it's because he considers her as his mom figure but still!!! And yet he has some unspoken rizz when it comes to flirting with guys tho)
Even his dislike of Ayame and not wanting to be like him was kinda him not wanting to come out of the closet (Ayame also gets a last minute love interest to make him more hetero. I thought he was definitely not straight)
It just made sense to me this was going to be his arc. Especially since Fruits Basket is sooo good at depicting emotions. I thought Yuki's arc was him overcoming his hatred of that part of himself and essentially coming out of the darkness that Akito had made him live in.
When the Student council members were introduced I thought Kakeru was going to be both a foil AND a love interest for Yuki. They just had that dynamic and chemistry that made it seem like Kakeru would change Yuki and help him understand his true self and feelings. I thought Machi was the quiet/ weird side character that would have a similar role as Kimi (comedic).
Then the whole Machi x Yuki happened and I was proven wrong. I didn't hate it but....Kakeru and Yuki just had so much growth in their friendship, I couldn't help but ship them.
I would have been happy with even a Bi-Panic moment for Yuki with Kakeru and Machi (who are both half-siblings)
Yuki just had the perfect personality and backstory for a good coming out arc but it never came to be.
(Ps: I am NOT hating Machi and Yuki's relationship. It's just that Fruits Basket had many opportunities to have gay characters but didn't commit to it)

Young Ralph Macchio looking like Johnny Cade but as Nico di Angelo??? Just a thought, idk if that made any sense

Ralph Macchio is of Italian and Greek descent, just like Nico, so it kind of works, plus they both have dark hair and big black eyes
I saw a resemblance between Johnny Cade and Nico di Angelo when I watched The Outsiders in school, although Nico is angrier than Johnny and his skin tone lightens a lot in the series (Macchio nails the angry stare and the outcast teen with daddy issues, though)
Replace the denim jacket with an oversized aviator jacket and you have Nico
Nico and Johnny are some of my favourite characters ever, so I don't know why I didn't make this post sooner

More Hetalia modern au
Gonna post my thoughts on the Hetalia Nations Revealed AU. Always a fun one to chat about. ( ̄▽ ̄)
We call it an AU but it’s actually pretty accurate. The part about nation-people not being a secret, I mean. I recently reread the webcomic and canon leans into NPs being public knowledge. Obviously their bosses are aware of them, but there’s lots of strips where NPs interact with members of the public as well. There are strips starring humans who don’t recognize their NP (that one soldier in France, Lisa, Davie, etc.) but they’re fewer in number. We all know Heta-canon is flexible so, for this post, I’m coming down on the side of “people know.” Here’s how I headcanon it all working:
Nation-people are common knowledge to the extent it would be really weird if you met someone who wasn’t aware of them. It would be like talking to a guy and he says he’s never heard of religion. Like, any religion. In the whole world. Not even the concept of it. You’d be all: “Whaaa?? Man, how?? Did you grow up under a rock?” It’s like that for NPs.
NPs are more than human and so aren’t too bothered by us. In a nice way. They still love their citizens but it’s not a relationship between equals. More benevolent demi-deities existing alongside the mundane. This is where I differ from some interpretations of this AU, I think. I can’t see the NPs as being weak and helpless around their people. They’re partially representations of the Earth itself and nature is much stronger than humanity. Like that panel where Francis was getting harassed by historians? Only happened because he allowed it. NPs let humans get close to them when they choose, but they can lose them if they wish. That’s what France did when he’d had enough. The historians blinked and he was just gone. Slipped away like a breath of wind. Leaving two very disappointed academics to continue their argument, lol. The only exceptions are their bosses. NPs have to obey any direct order given by them.
Have to, have to. Compelled in the old fae-like way. NPs are completely under the control of whoever’s running their country. The one who has the final say is the head of state, but they can and do delegate if someone else holds the true power. Kiku directly obeys his emperor, for example, but the emperor obeys Japan’s Diet. So the Prime Minister gives Kiku his orders through their symbolic ruler. If a country’s government is overthrown then that control passes to the new ones in charge. NPs don’t get any choice in the matter, sadly for them. When an NP starts obeying the “other side” then the writing’s on the wall that the regime change has succeeded.
They aren’t considered fully human and so don’t have the same rights and privileges we do. I’d imagine there’s been many high profile court cases about stuff like this in the modern era. Just what an NP can be ordered to do by their bosses before it becomes abusive, how culpable they are for crimes committed by their nations, etc. “The Nation of [x] vs. Nation-Person [y] in the case of Historical Crime(s) [z].” I don’t think much would have been accomplished over the years, lol. No country is going to let their NP go to a foreign prison. Plus the NPs always have the “magically compelled” defense to fall back on. So no progress, just lots of debate. NPs are considered somewhere between guardian deities, ordinary people, and “things” in the broader public consciousness.
Yes, they have social media. No, it has not always gone well. I bet after a few instant-major-historical-event cases of careless and/or hot-tempered NPs calling their bosses assholes on twitter, NP accounts were mass nuked. They were reinstated only after their bosses gave them loooong lists of subjects they weren’t allowed to talk about. Afterwards their posts were all fluff about hobbies and personal interests. Doesn’t stop foreign governments, economists, gossip channels, NP enthusiasts, and curious people combing through every tweet, post, and video to try and guess what the NPs are “really” talking about. So many conspiracy theorist channels, oh god. Even thinking about it is making me tired. 😂
NPs have two homes: a work address and a personal one. The former is usually located in their capital and is either where their boss lives or close by. So Alfred has a home at the White House, Arthur has one on Downing Street, etc. However most NPs don’t consider these their real homes and only spend time there while doing government work. Ordinary, if nice, houses and apartments out among their people is where they like to live. These can decorate them to match their personalities the way they can’t official residences. They use their power over the land to make sure no humans can find these sanctuaries unless the NP wants them to. Stops NPs being swarmed by paparazzi, tourists, and fans 24/7.
De-anoning to say it was me that sent @forsoobado137 the money ask. So just repeating what I said there. All countries put their NP’s face on their money. Along with the state’s name, the NP’s human name, and a picture of the actual land they represent. The money can have other famous people on it too, just on the other side. Governments have been doing this since money was invented and some of the only surviving visual records of ancient NPs are pictures on coins.
Any human being knows an NP and the country they represent just by sight. Unless it’s somewhere they’ve never heard of. Then all they know is that they’re looking at a nation-person. I imagine it would be considered a huge faux-pas to let it slip you don’t know an NP’s country name. Like telling a Holywood A-lister you don’t know who they are at a red carpet event. 😭
NPs have many default jobs, mostly related to their governments. One of them is being in their nation’s armed forces. They’ve always done this ever since the first age of empires. They even led armies and were seen as good luck charms in the past. Soldiers tend to make up the bulk of the humans the NPs remember most fondly. The relationship between Francis and Joan of Arc is one of the best known historical examples. Whether an NP actually enjoys their time in the military depends on their personality. Which is in turn influenced by how warlike the actual country is and has been. If your NP falls in battle, it’s one of the worst war omens possible.
Speaking of death, I headcanon that NPs can die from illness or injury. Or at least their human bodies can. They’re tougher than we are, but not unkillable. They’ll come back so long as the nation itself survives. True death for an NP is reserved for when the civilisation they represent stops existing. If an NP dies in a foreign country, they’ll crumble to dust and regenerate somewhere deep in their heartlands. The place they were originally “born” from the earth. Only a select few very high up in government know the location of their NP’s birth/rebirth place. This also happens if they die on home soil and their body is destroyed. If they die at home and their body is okay, they’ll heal and wake up after a few hours. If the country isn’t doing well it takes longer for its NP to come back.
Speaking of countries not doing well: NPs get sick either when their economies go bad, or when there’s an epidemic among their citizens. A lot of European NPs can chalk some of their early deaths up to the Black Death. When an NP get “depressed” it’s code for a financial fever. Nothing can be done but keep them comfortable until the economy picks up.
Hetalia is so fun to post about, my god. Such a prime series for theories and headcanons. You feel me, gamers?

Arthur Kirkland wearing this Alexander McQueen suit to a red carpet event or award ceremony and breaking the internet

Bonus points if he wears it like this model, with no shirt underneath
(You have no idea how hard I had to search for the images for this suit online - I saw it being sold on the Alexander McQueen website a few years ago and fell in love with it, but it's not being made anymore 🥲)

I'm glad this post exists! I'm learning about Korean culture (out of my own interest), and although I happen to like aph Korea's cheerful personality, there were things about his character that really rubbed me the wrong way when I first learned about him. I was a kid when I started watching Hetalia and I was unaware of Japanese imperialism, so I didn't notice anything problematic about aph Japan, but now, as an adult who loves learning about history, countries, languages and cultures, I'm glad I can notice these things (problematic, racist, xenophobic, colonialist patterns) in Hetalia and other shows.
(Because of so many stereotypes and inaccuracies, I really enjoy creating my own headcanons and au's of Hetalia nations to the point where they're almost different from canon altogether, but more bearable to me)
The Many Ills of Canon South Korea(as explained by a South Korean)
Ik a lot of people might feel a knee-jerk reaction to this and go "why are you making this? it's been a long time since the character was banned and went into oblivion," and that's true. However, I find that a lot of characteristics of how South Korea was written has been carried on by some Hetalia fans, which are still problematic and rooted in pro-Japanese imperialist sentiment.
Here, I'll try my best to go over some major points, starting with Korea's canon design.
Character Design
Looking at this for the first time, I felt like I was on some kind of trip. It looked like Himaruya was indecisive of whether he wanted Yongsoo to wear a durumagi or a jeogori, so he said "let's make the undershirt as long as a durumagi!"
For reference, left is a jeogori and pants outfit and right is a durumagi and pants outfit. These are the 2 main hanbok types for men.

I can't think of a single character whose character design was this flawed and so inaccurately done. It's like he didn't even care or put any thought into Korean traditional wear. It makes me laugh when I see how Japan is given such accurate clothing in contrast.
His clothing is a caricature of what Korean wear is. Thankfully, I don't see a lot of art of him wearing it anymore, but when it does appear it really does feel disrespectful.
His Personality
I don't really have a problem with his energetic personality, but if you know anything about his depiction in the manga, you know what I'll be talking about:
His "hobby" where he takes credit for inventions, and his weird "quirk" involving sexually harassing Japan.
What...was the reason for this exactly? A lot of personality quirks and gags of characters are rooted in some existing stereotype many people attribute to the country, like
America -> eats a lot of food, bright colored cake -> US's reputation as a country with a lot of fast food and artificially colored desserts
England -> food is inedible -> England's reputation of unappetizing foods
Korea -> claims credit for other countries' creations(Mostly Japan's), sexually harasses Japan -> ?????
This is why I don't accept some Westerners trying to brush South Korea aside "because everyone gets dunked on in Hetalia!" yes, but to what degree?
A Japanese man writing his Korean character to be stealing from the Japanese one says a lot, that Korea doesn't have a culture of its own, or most of it isn't their own. Or daresay, Korea takes Japanese culture and claims it to be their own. All three of these conclusions are problematic, and audacious coming from a person hailing from the empire that attempted to stamp our culture out and penalized those trying to preserve our culture.
The "grabbing Japan's chest" bit originates from an ongoing political dispute of an island known as Dokdo, or as Japan calls it, Takeshima. Personally, I'd agree that Dokdo belongs to Korea, referring to maps produced by Japan from the 1800s:
Yellow is marked as Korean land, with even the writing labeling it as "Joseon Land." But regardless of which side is correct, there is something about taking an ongoing territorial dispute(it was a much bigger issue while Himaruya was writing Hetalia) and applying it with the context of "haha he grabs Japan's chest."
It paints Korea as unreasonable and a sexual assaulter so that Korean grievances against Japan can be dismissed. Additionally, both countries have a rampant sexual assault issue(my phone's shutter sound cannot be turned off–a feature of phones only made in/for Korea and Japan), which is why it's also insensitive to give this trait to Korea and make light of this sensitive topic, while also...not extending this to Japan.
Let's not mention making Korea the harasser given the history and Japan's position too. Korea's red light districts and sex/entertainment industry was started by and formalized by the Japanese occupation so they could exploit Korean women.
"Korea had been a Japanese colony since 1910, and the proximity of colonial Korea to Japan, its established colonial bureaucracy and transportation network, and the presumed “cleanliness” of its young female population meant that likely the largest percentage of comfort women came from Korea. Another reason for the large numbers of Korean girls and young women in the comfort women system was the well-developed state of the Japanese colonial sex industry in Korea and its networks of human trafficking. This industry, which had been growing with Japanese encouragement since the late nineteenth century, blossomed under the Japanese colonization of Korea (1910–45) and provided networks for obtaining and trafficking sexual slaves." - Music and Dance in the Japanese Military “Comfort Women” System: A Case Study in the Performing Arts, War, and Sexual Violence by Joshua D Pilzer
Now, the "claiming everything is Korean" bit. The whole gag is Korea is delusional haha look he's claiming something Japan made as his!! While Japan is just looking at him like "ok...sure..go off whatever ig." Again, making Korea to be an unreasonable childish character while Japan is mature and just trying to get along, let bygones be bygones! Look at the sassy child I have to deal with guys!!!
Speaking of "sassy child..."
Korea's age
I haven't checked the wiki in a hot minute, but there were 2 details of his age I remember.
he's 15
he was "born" 1945(liberation of Korea from Japan) or 1948(Creation of South Korean govt)
This would be contrary to even the manga, as it references a painting by a Japanese artist in the 1700s of what he assumed were Joseon messengers stealing chickens during their mission to Japan. Korea was alive then as depicted in the picture referencing the real one, so it's safe to say his existence should predate even 1945.
(Interesting to note that Himaruya says that Koreans interpret it as Japanese bullying the Korean envoys, when Korean sources actually suggest it could be children playing around.)
Even if Korea was set to be born 1945 or 1948, it doesn't do us justice. Why do we not have a history before colonization? How is it that Korea could be even younger than America, when the Joseon Dynasty was established a century before Christopher Columbus reached America in 1492? How is it that Japan gets to be older and Korea doesn't?
It's glaringly obvious, but Korea's "childish, immature personality" stems from Japanese imperialist rhetoric of Koreans during the Colonial Era, of people needing to be civilized.
"In April 1919, Baron Goto Shinpei (Home Minister, 1916–1918) addressed a luncheon attended by US Treasurer John Burke. Goto contended that Japan did not act duplicitously in 1905, but instead, “with the full cognizance of the United States government.” "He added, “under the efficient government of Japan, the Korean people rapidly advanced in civilization and enjoyed the blessings resulting from the development of productive industry, as well as the spread of education." - The March First Movement in America: The Campaign to Win American Support by Brandon Palmer
The most important thing to remember in all of this was that during the time of Korea's controversy, Anti-Japanese sentiment was still quite high because of the unhealed wounds as a result of 35 years of Japanese Occupation. When you think about your colonizer making a personification of your country and depicting him as
-someone that copies from the colonizer and harasses them, a contrast to the "mature" colonizer
-someone with barely a history before the colonizer
-someone who's clothes are so wildly inaccurate
then wouldn't you too be enraged? This is what caused the National Assembly to ban the official airing of the anime, and official releases of the manga. You'll notice even these days Koreans are hostile towards Hetalia, even as the incident happened years ago, whereas the Countryhumans had a large Korean following and creators, because one of them was openly treating their country like a personification from a political cartoon found in a 1920s Japanese newspaper, and the other was fan created.
I hope this perspective was helpful in explaining why certain qualities of canon are disrespectful. Please remember before defending "canon" Hetalia, Hetalia is made by a Japanese author who was found to have been on Japanese right wing forums. Don't try to convince a Korean that his depiction/canon of Korea is respectful.

I love modern headcanons and au's for hetalia nations
Can you talk abt South Korea in your nationverse 🥺🥺🥺 please
South Korea enjoys his fame. He has a lot of opportunities to meet people and travel. The downside is that his boss is very strict on how he appears. His government wants him to be a "good role model" in both physical appearance and actions. South Korea has his own PR team, and they make sure he has a good image.
He shows up in more TV shows than movies. He makes a lot of appearances/cameos in period dramas, though they often use lookalikes instead of the real South Korea. So much so that when he actually appeared in one, nobody realized it until the credits. The only movies he really shows up in are documentaries about his life.
South Korea is a very online person. He's most active on YouTube. He makes all kinds of videos like vlogs, lets plays, video game "reviews", and challenges. He makes "collab" videos with other nations, which either involve him randomly facetiming them, or he flies them over to his house. A lot of the things he says in these videos get turned into memes. On Instagram, he posts a lot of selfies with other nations. He also is passionate about his art. He often posts drawings and doodles online. Some other Asian countries have posted viral pictures of him drawing at important meetings.
South Korea gets a lot of visits from tourists. Half of the time they're polite and genuinely curious about him, but the other half are obsessed Koreaboos. He keeps his composure, but he is annoyed by all of the people who fetishize and objectify him. He's also run into some pretty deranged stalkers. Now he has a habit of avoiding tourist areas or speed-walking through them. With the paparazzi, he employs the same strategy.

I love this art so much I would inject it into my bloodstream

Some of my favourite Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild/Tears of the Kingdom art is by @malintfalch (on Instagram and Twitter).
This one in particular is so hauntingly beautiful to me. It's based on the famous painting "The Fallen Angel" by Alexandre Cabanel from 1847, one of my favourite paintings.

I turned 24 a few weeks ago and I realized that I am officially older than Arthur Kirkland (Britain from Hetalia), whose human age is 23. He has been one of my top characters since I was about 11 and it just feels odd and a little bittersweet that I've surpassed his age
Also, I've always thought the Hetalia characters looked, sounded, and acted way older than they seemed. Idk if it's just because they're voiced by older people and/or the art style (and probably because they're supposed to be centuries/millennia old and have been through a lot), or if it's because I don't feel very "mature" for my age and I know a lot of people feel this way about being in their 20s, but I find it hard to believe Britain is 23, like
you're telling me this man could have been in my graduating class?

His frontal lobe isn't even fully developed
(I can kind of believe it, though. He wants to be taken seriously and be seen as mature but he's actually not - I feel like he would be the student who takes notes but gets distracted or keeps his camera off during zoom classes when he's supposed to have it on lol)
That feeling when your birthday comes and you are now older than one of your favourite characters 🥲😭
I don't know why I always feel weird and a little sad when I turn a year older than a comfort character

When I was a kid I lowkey shipped Gwen and Courtney from the Total Drama series, I know they're kind of toxic but I kind of liked them together and I didn't even realize I was shipping them 💀
