After the shadows escaped Luffy’s body from the battle against Gecko Moria and Oars, Luffy experienced a permanent side effect that left him with his Nightmare form still intact, albeit far stronger and more agile than ever before.

However, without the shadows, this form would change slightly in appearance, giving Luffy a set of razor-sharp teeth, steel-cutting claws, and a pair of bright purple eyes, as well as forming the habit of losing his prized straw hat during the midst of his transformations as a result.

Despite gaining such a powerful form, it doesn’t come without serious drawbacks, as it only emerges under a full moon, and without the shadows allowing Luffy to maintain control over it, he becomes feral and unpredictable, hardly recognizing his crew whenever he goes on a rampage.
