Do you ever think about how tommy merlyn dropped everything and rushed to Hong Kong because he got a notification someone logged into his supposedly dead best friend’s email? do you ever think about he had those notifications set up in the first place? he knew it very well could’ve been a scam or a false notification or something but he just had to check. do you ever think he had moments like this before and after hong kong where he just grasped and clawed at bits and pieces of oliver? like taking whatever part of his cd collection that wasn’t in Tommy’s car already from his room and smoking weed in the woods by the docs on the hood of his car like they always used to do. do you think he was the opposite of Oliver in the since that instead of his absence hurting too much to talk about, it’s all he can talk about to anyone who will listen? because his mother’s memory had become an echo in the years after she died, her name only reverberating off the walls during one of him and his father’s fights and the sound of her voice, her laugh, what she looked like was something he can only hear and see when he stretches his memory far back enough and even then. he can’t let his best friend become an echo (a ghost) because if he does that then then he’ll have to admit that he’s dead so he keeps the email notifications after Hong Kong and emails him every week or month or whenever he misses him. do you think he ever looked at sand and thought about his best friends hair or saw sea glass and thought of his eyes or heard the waves crashing against the shore and thought that this is all he’ll ever get? just bits and pieces. never his best friends laugh, never his smile, never his presence at his side. no more partying or inside jokes or car rides to nowhere and everywhere or cd’s or smoking weed on the hood of his car. no more Oliver.

in law school, my mom took me to this stress retreat because my family was vaguely aware i was a suicide risk. and they didnt allow phones, so i brought this huge bag of books. and one of the options for "destressing" was this fake cave grotto thing, where they'd decorated a room to make it look exactly like an underground cave and the air was like -10 degrees, but there was a like 4ft deep pool in the middle that was kept super super hot, so you would just switch between the hot and cold. and they would bring you an endless supply of this weird syrupy drink thing that was like super caffeinated and tasted like sugar and mint. and so i spent multiple days sitting half submerged in this fake grotto drinking mystery liquid and reading. and i have to be honest i really did feel less stressed
