A selection of characters from the western portion of the Barovian map. The module doesn’t involve the Krezkov family without an inventive DM, but Curse of Strahd: Reloaded resurrects (!) a few in order to plant a few seeds for later. Really fun doing these portraits - I was inspired by the facial features of the “There’s no such thing as a conspiracy” guy on TikTok. But then again, who isn’t?

The Bride of Abydos (Selim and Zuleika)

Description

The Bride of Abydos is a poem written by Lord Byron in 1813. One of his earlier works, The Bride of Abydos is considered to be one of his "Heroic Poems", along with The Giaour, Lara, The Siege of Corinth, The Corsair and Parisina. These poems contributed to his poetic fame at the time in England.

Set in the Dardanelles of Turkey, Byron’s poem relates the tragic fate of Zuleika, the daughter of the Pasha Giaffir, and her lover, the pirate Selim. In order to avoid a loveless marriage arranged by her father, Zuleika escapes at night from the harem tower in which she has been held. In the scene shown in Delacroix’s painting the lovers await rescue in a grotto by the sea, pursued by Giaffir and his men, armed and bearing torches. When Selim fires his pistol to summon the aid of his comrades, who are waiting offshore, the shot signals their position to Giaffir. Sensing the approach of her pursuers, Zuleika tries to restrain Selim. In the tragic climax of the tale, Selim is shot dead by Giaffir, and his body washed out to sea. Zuleika dies of grief.

Adieu to striking Dietrich-cheekboned veteran fashion model and muse to Thierry Mugler and Azzedine Alaïa, Zuleika Ponsen, whose death on 10 April 2024 has been announced. (Haven’t found any online obituaries). Ponsen features prominently in some of French pop art duo Pierre et Gilles’ most iconic work – including this one: Méduse (1990).

Week 1 ~ Introducing Elsie ~ Sunday

Waylon drifted off into the fog of Ravenwood while Miss Izadi politely asked to enter my home. The answer must be yes, remember that darlings if you ever meet a ghost because they don't need an invitation to enter wherever they please! So! One that asks is one being a real McCoy, if you get my meaning.

Regardless, I took the plate of buns from her as I imagine carrying it is taxing for her ethereal form and she wanted to let me know a little more about this house.

Zuleika: You seem like a nice woman and as such I feel it is only fair that I warn you that living in this place for longer than a week is a death sentence.

Elsie: So I've heard! How thrilling! What happened to the last owner then?

Zuleika: She choked on spaghetti.

I could not help but laugh at that and even Miss Izadi joins in. How mysterious! How keen! The laughter stopped as she had a little more to say.

Zuleika: Do not open the casket in the spare room. In fact, do not mess with it. I wouldn't even go in that room if I were you. If I were you, I'd move and-

Elsie: Thank you my dear, your concern is well noted!

I shall do as I please!
