Coppering Techniques
From early on, the standard sheet of copper was 1,22m long and 35,56cm wide. The plates used for HMS Alarm (the first vessel with coppering) in 1761 were very thin, weighing only 340g per square foot. They wore away far too quickly, and much thicker plates were used from then on. By 1779 three thicknesses of sheet were available, weighing 907g, 793g or 623g per square foot, and these were to remain standard. They were distributed about the ship according to the wear they were likely to encounter. The thickest were in the bows, the medium ones just behind the bows, and the rest of the ship was covered in the thinnest type.

The coppering roughly followed the run of the planking, so the it curved downwards towards midships. The lowest strake was put on first, and each plank was to overlap its neighbour by about 1/2 in. On the first ships to be coppered, one sheet seems to have been placed directly above the corresponding one on the strake below; by 1779 this had been changed, and the strakes were staggered, as in brickwork. In 1779, to attach the planks to the hull, brown paper was used between the wood and the copper and then the plates were fastened with iron nails. From 1780, the hull was first coated with tar, then the brown paper was placed on top and then the copper plates were attached. The iron nails were replaced by nails made of a mixture of copper and zinc, because the iron interfered with the compass and could no longer be used.
Even though the modern reconstruction is shown here, it still follows the old pattern. Here, a tar foil is used as a barrier between the hull and the copper.
Early copper sheating stopped 30cm or more below the waterline, and the area above was covered with conventional wooden sheating. This was presumably because it was likely to be worn away by boats and anchors rubbing against the side. Wood was assumed to be less vulnerable to such wear, and it was easier to repair with the resources on board ship. It was still regarded as standard late in 1779. In 1783 it was ordered that the copper should end 60 cm above the waterline.

Love Me Blind (Butchlander)
Warnings: Just the usual E rating. Short. Why did it take me this long to post a butchlander Kinktober fill lol. I feel like I have to fill this prompt. This is set in ZMverse, post-fic timeline. No AO3 link because I may or may not slide this into the next ZnMoO4 installment.
TL;DR of ZM: HL spent a few months in captivity/bondage, including a zinc plate over his eyes, he and Billy Butcher got physically and eventually emotionally intimate to the point that when HL got free, rather than killing his captor, he remained attached to Butcher, eventually convincing him to take Compound V.
“Come on, close your eyes,��� Billy whispers in his ear.
Homelander tries, but he simply can’t. He’s barely managed to force himself to close his eyes to go to sleep, but he can’t bring himself to close them here, not with Billy in front of him. Not just in front of him, around him, inside him, everywhere at once, his hips snapping forward, his rough broad hands firmly gripping his legs near the insides of his knees and pressing them down into his chest, his beard scratching against Homelander’s collarbones and neck as those places are getting marked up with hickeys. Homelander loves it. Billy on V is truly a gift— well worth the days of taking care of him during the illness the slow dosing causes. He’s strong and durable, maybe too strong. Homelander’s not sure he could throw him off the bed right now, if he wanted to. But he doesn’t want to. He wants them both to be right here, to be pressed down, to feel achingly full, to have his skin sucked on with bruising strength. He wants to feel uninhibited, no longer having to take care and keep his own motions contained, no longer afraid to accidentally snag Billy’s body. But he doesn’t want one thing.
Billy’s orgasm somehow rocks through his body too, muscle tremors, rapid heartbeat and all, so that Homelander almost questions if they had somehow become physiologically connected. But no, his stomach is dry, cock still begging for release.
Billy unclamps his grip from his legs but doesn’t slump down on top of him, doesn’t pull out.
“Come on. Close ‘em for me,” Billy repeats, his voice husky, still breathing heavily, and runs a finger along Homelander’s jawline, tapping him under his chin.
“Why.” It would be so cruel of Billy to take advantage of him now, after having his life spared and even being gifted the V. But Homelander can’t help being wary.

Homelander sighs and closes them. Even though he can see through any material, when he closes his eyes— really, honestly closes them— they seem to automatically shut off, roll up, refuse to relay visual cues. He can’t peek through his lids. He’s plunged into the darkness again, sickeningly familiar, and suddenly he can’t bear it for a single second longer, and opens his eyes frantically. He hates to admit it, but he’s terrified.
Billy’s watching him, eyes full of something sorrowful, maybe tinged with curiosity and pity.
“I’ve gotcha,” he says, lowering his body down until his weight rests on Homelander’s body, caressing his face before kissing him. Homelander feels himself relaxing and letting Billy sink lower between his spread thighs, his erection getting pressed between their abs. It’s not exactly comfortable, but it’s comforting. Homelander feels his heart rate and breathing returning to normal when he’s feeling compressed. Feeling that Billy might be able to hold him down against his will is a weird thrill, a turn-on, but also a paradoxically calming feeling.
“Close them. For just a bit,” Billy coaxes him, even as one his hands approaches his eyes and gently covers them.
Homelander arches almost reflexively, despite the weight on him, and lets out a panicked breath that might count as whimper because there was some voice put behind it, but he doesn’t toss his head or do anything to throw the hand off his face.
The darkness is here again. But so is Billy. Close to him. Touching him in so many places. Weighing him down into the mattress. They lie in silence for what must be seconds, but to Homelander it feels like hours.
“You have to promise,” Homelander says, his voice hoarse and small. He’s afraid to finish his demand aloud.
“What’s that?” Billy nudges his nose under his chin and kisses it. He’s stayed inside Homelander’s body the whole time, and Homelander can feel him becoming ready for round two, growing, swelling, feeling less comfortable but in a way Homelander wants.
“You have to promise you won’t … you know. Keep me against my will.”
Billy stays silent and Homelander’s breathing speeds up when he doesn’t hear an affirmation. Somewhere in the back of his mind he’s imagining that Billy has stashed piles and piles of ZM coated wire under the bed, ready to secure him there, just waiting for the right opportunity. He so badly wants to push the hand off his face and see for himself.
“Okay,” Billy breaks the silence. “I promise you.”
Maybe it’s because he took so long to consider it, but Homelander actually finds those few words believable, relaxing his spinal muscles and sinking into the bed. “You want to fuck me with my eyes closed?”
“No,” Billy says. “But I want you to trust me.”
Homelander smiles wanly. “Who else am I going to trust?”
“That’s sad, mate.”
Homelander shrugs.
Billy removes his hand and Homelander blinks in the light before wrapping his arms around his partner’s shoulders, wrapping his legs around his waist, squeezing him closer, further inside, pressing up together so they almost feel like one body again.

Salmon with Roasted Vegetables and Tahini Sauce -
Ingredients:
Salmon fillets (2)
Brussels sprouts (1 cup, halved)
Red bell pepper (1, sliced)
Avocado (1, sliced)
Olive oil (2 tbsp)
Lemon juice (2 tbsp)

Instructions:

Capstone #6: Solid

CAD is nearly done, and the design is 95% there. There's still some improvements to be made. Big 'ol hand to our CAD team especially for bringing this to life. Lets explore under the cut
There's 2 main parts of this thing. The main body has the fans and wheels. The gantry on top does all the doodling. Let's pop the top off.
The cover and walls are purely aesthetic and keeps the dust out. Originally the cover is held on using snap buttons, but that's been changed to the tiniest magnets pocket change can buy. The base plate is made from thin wood, or we've been exploring carbon fiber (but that's proven to be mad expensive for basically no gain. Like 400+$ expensive).
The wheels are servos, the fans sit side by side and run off wall outlet power. (Try making these drone motors that normally run off batteries, and make them run off a wall outlet. Sounds easy right? Good luck. It's been a time doing it. They eat something like 12-16v at 40-60+ amps... *each*). It's got tiny nubs on the bottom to stabilize it, because with only 2 wheels, it's going to want to rock side to side. It'll have some distance sensors on the sides to find where it is on the wall, and an accelerometer to find how it's tilted. I'm personally a little worried the vibrations from the fans will make the accelerometer unreliable, but we'll find out about that later. The whole thing will be controlled by an Arduino Mega.
Smooving over to the gantry, both axis will be on rails purchased from Igus. The rails are made from hard anodized aluminum, while the carriages are made from diecast zinc and some slippery bearing plastic. It's then pulled around by timing belts and steppers. We modified both axis a tad by reducing the rail size to the smallest ones Igus offers, and giving the horizontal axis 2 rails for more stability (The bearing situation on the timing belts were improved too)
The printer head uses an electro-magnet to pull the pen down. There are guide pins with springs to, well, guide and spring return the head. There are also stop screws that set the maximum engagement and disengagement. (The travel distance is kinda exaggerated here tho. The actual travel distance will be as little as possible. Like 3-4mm)
All in all, the bot body is something like 300 x 500mm, 60mm thick (+ 55mm for the fan tails), with a print area of 150 x 150mm. We've tried to cut as much weight as possible, and are looking at about 1.2kg or a little lighter than a small toaster
As a bonus pic, here's an early concept. This one uses a lead screw for the X, and a shaft and timing belt for the Y. If you're wondering what stops the axis from pivoting, it would have been some gibs located behind both axis. Commonly used on dovetails, a gib is when you intentionally design in a large gap between your mating surfaces, and shove a thin plate in there with setscrews to take up the slack. Look at the ways of basically any milling machine or lathe, and chances are you'll see one!

“The sun is shining as the cold water hits my tiny feet. I turn back to look at the giggling couple behind me. The woman is sharing her ice cream with the man. They kiss. I cover my eyes and scream. “MOOOOOMMMM!! DAAAAD!!! STOP!!!!!” I run at them and jump into the open arms waiting for me”
I was cooking in the kitchen while listening to music. I heard the door open and close. Show time. I was cutting the vegetables as I felt his hands wrap around me from behind. I felt him inhale my scent. “Bach’s Prelude in C Minor?” he muttered. I tried to keep myself from smirking. “What about it?” I asked nonchalantly. I felt his grip tighten just a tiny bit before he moved his hands to caress my neck and waist. He knows I am up to something. “What are you cooking?” he purred into my ear. He knows but he just wants me to say it out loud. “Rabbit stew” I said. I tossed spices, clove, garlic and chili into the stew. He inhaled sharply and tutted his tongue. Keep yourself calm. “So many spices? Haven’t I taught you better, my darling sous chef?” he challenged. I bit my lip. “I think I am catching a flu so I wanted to make it spicier” I shrugged and turned around to face him. “Want to taste? I promise it’s delicious” I batted my eyes and handed him a spoon. He smiled and took the spoon, dipped it into the pot and tasted it while keeping an eye contact with me. “It sure is” he purred. I gave him a quick peck on the lips which he didn’t answer. Breathe.
“So that is your happiest memory?” Dr. Lecter asks me. I smile sadly and nod. “Yes. That is the only time I remember seeing them together. Happy. That is the only time I remember seeing my father sober” I say and sigh.
Hannibal went to make the table. My heart was racing. I took the zip lock bag from the drawer where I hid it earlier. Zinc Phosphide. Rat poison. I had ground it into a fine powder. This has to work. I tossed a great amount of it on his plate and topped it with the stew mixing it in. It looks normal. It smells normal. I took a deep breath and walked into the dining room pushing the serving trolley, which helped me to keep my balance with the new legs.
There he was. Waiting for me. He had made the table almost as beautiful as the first time we had dinner. I gave him his plate and walked to sit on my seat, setting my plate down from the trolley. He had put music on this time. Chopin's Nocturne in C-sharp minor. He had told me it was a song that reminded him of a prey that is too weak to run away. A prey that is almost too pitiful to eat. A wounded, weak rabbit. Zuiki. “I am no classical music enthusiast, but isn’t Chopin a bit too melancholic for a beautiful romantic dinner like this together, my love? ” I asked, trying not to sound too cold. He smiled back without answering me. He wants to play, huh? Alright. I’ll play along.
“You loved him?” he asks. I raise a brow. “Of course I did? He was my father?” I say a bit confused. He leans back. “That isn’t something that defines love” he comments. I look down, think for a moment and look back at him. “Then what does?”
I took a sip from my glass and tasted the food. It definitely tasted spicy. I looked at him as he just sat there, fingers interlocked in front of him and staring right at me. He knows. I took a deep breath. “Was it all the spices?” I sighed. He smiled. “No, Beth. It was the fact that you wanted to get caught” he took another sip from his glass. Run. I bolted up and sprinted towards the front door as fast as possible, until after a few steps my whole body felt numb and I dizzily stumbled down hitting the floor. That fucker drugged the wine and I was too stupid to notice.

For a moment he looks like he is about to answer something, but he just shakes his head. “No need to apologize”
I woke up slowly. I looked around me to see this wasn’t the room he used to do his so called “work”. This was the dining room. I was back in my own chair, binded, of course. He was sitting across the table in his own seat. I started to chuckle quietly. “I should’ve known. I should’ve known you would do this eventually. You destroy everyone around you. Don't you, Dr. Lecter?” I shook my head and looked at him. He didn’t answer, so I continued. “You left the patient records there on purpose, didn’t you?” I teared up in anger and gripped the bindings. Still no answer. “DIDN’T YOU?? ANSWER ME!!” I screamed. He sighed. “I wanted you to know the truth, but I wasn’t sure how you would react. Now I know, and I can’t say I am not disappointed. I didn’t think you’d fail so badly at killing me” he tutted. I stared at him in silence. I was weak. I couldn’t do it. He got up and walked to me. “I really wanted a future for us” he said with a sad look upon his face. I scoffed, looking at the table. “Maybe, but you always knew it would end this way” I looked at him. He nodded in silence. “I loved you, Bethany” he said. I looked back at him, giving him a sad smile. “I loved you too, Hannibal” I answered. “It’s quite funny. I thought you could save me, but you ended up killing me in the process” I said, tearing up a bit. “In fact, I thought I could change you by changing myself” I started to cry. He kissed my tear soaked lips softly and inhaled my scent one last time. “I cannot be saved” he whispered.
I was now back in his basement . Here he cut me for the first time. Here he told me he cured me. Now I knew it was all a lie. I wanted to hurt him back. I wanted to hurt him the way he hurt me. To see his blood pool in my skin the way Valentin’s blood did. But I should’ve known the prey can never outsmart the predator. The prey can never become anything else. A Rabbit could only run, even after the predator had cut its legs.
I felt the needle puncture my skin and after a few seconds the sedative started to calm my nerve system down. I can’t wait to see my mother. Before I fell asleep, Hannibal leaned over me to whisper: “I promise you will be the finest amuse-bouche, Bethany”.
