ZERO WASTE AIR TRAVEL: WHAT TO BRING ✈️✈️✈️

✈️ SILVERWARE

If you fly overseas, you’re likely to have two meals on the plane. For many airlines, that means 2 plastic spoons, 2 plastic forks, 2 plastic knives, disposable napkins, possibly sugar or salt and plastic sleeves. Airport security really will let you through with actual silverware. You can bring an extra mismatched fork and spoon, so that if they do take it from you it's not something you'll miss. Wipe them off between meals or use one for each meal.

✈️ LIQUID CONTAINERS If you bring a full water bottle or coffee mug, they’ll ask you to chug whatever is in it or throw it out, so make sure it's empty. You can bring a water bottle and an insulated travel cup and fill both with water before the flight. This way, you can reduce your need of water from the bottles, or not need it all. Ask for your coffee or tea in your own cup.

✈️ FOOD IN REUSABLE CONTAINERS If you can avoid the airline food, do so. Everything comes overly packaged and wrapped in plastic and foil. Traveling for only a week or so, you can try pack a meal (or two) and try to avoid the unnecessary waste.

✈️ BLANKET/EYE MASK Some airlines will also provide you with plastic bags containing small pillows and blankets. You should bring an extra sweater or a heavy scarf to bundle up because planes can be pretty cold. my #laundry set up 👙 this is how I wash my delicates and underwear #byhand and I always hang 99% of my things. it’s not always pretty #zerowasteIRL #zerowastelaundry . I use one (sometimes two bins) and wash with #drbronners #castillesoap (I don’t measure out how much) and sometimes baking soda for whites (haven’t tried color yet or know if it is alright to use). let the clothes soak in the water with castille soap for ten minutes, ➰swirl and swish it around, then let it sit for another ten, ring them out gently (I don’t twist), empty the tub, fill with new water, soak in new water, ring out gently, then hang it up . *tips* 1. ♻️for the next load, I will #reuse the rinse water for my cleaning, soapy water to reduce how much I use. 2. I hang heavy things by halfing them and hang on the bottom part of the hanger so it doesn’t drag and pull the material . I learned everything I know in the #Dominican Republic 🇩🇴 where I washed my clothes, towels, sheets, everything by hand. my host families were so gracious and patient teaching me. I really learned how to be conscious about my water and food waste there and continued this process and lifestyle of reducing my waste while traveling, working abroad, and living here in the US! . While I’ll often bring a regular mason jar, this one was a bit lighter and easier to transport. LET THE HOLIDAY COMMENCE! @adamhobaoill and I are heading to Berlin to visit friends 😁 We offset our flights with @goclimate for this trip (the same company that we have started offsetting our general living with each month) so that our impact is lessened. We generally try to avoid trips that require flying, but unfortunately we don't have unlimited leave from work and trains and buses and ferries take a lot longer than a plane. This is our first trip together by plane since Canada in 2019! Offsetting isn't the perfect solution, but at the moment it is one of the best options for things that you can't avoid or reduce. Like many modes of transportation, taking a trip in a plane has a huge carbon footprint and ideally should be avoided as much as possible. For many people flying is also the only way we can visit family that lives in other countries. Let's take a look at some of the many things we can do to reduce our waste (and environmental impact) while flying. 💙 Pack Less Stuff If you already have a minimalist wardrobe, that can be pretty easy! But it's also easy to fall into the trap of over packing especially when you're not sure what climate or activities to expect. However with a little practice, you can get down to a carry-on bag and still have all the essentials. And as a bonus, you won't have to pay for those checked bag fees any more either! 💙 Take Snacks on the Plane As anyone who has flown knows, plane food is wrapped in plastic. If you want then to be able to eat on the plane, I highly suggest you bring your own snacks! I recommend things like nuts, granola, fruit, sandwiches, and anything else you might be craving! Also, if you're flying into another country, it's best not to over pack on snacks for the plan because you might not be able to take them through customs on the other side! Pack just enough to eat while flying and check your host country's rules for bringing in things like nuts, fruits, or other bulk snacks. 💙 Bring Your Zero Waste Kit It's important too that you are equipped with your zero waste kit when you need it. Even though some airlines are waking up and starting to do things like recycle or eliminate plastic straws, it's still best to come prepared! Since you can't bring water through security, make sure to pack your water bottle and coffee mug if you want a drink on the other side. Also, don't forget your reusable utensils and napkins to eat your yummy snacks with!
