screen-free things to get you offline!!

#1 Reading - It doesn't have to be a new book, it could be a childhood favorite you've read a million times. It honestly doesn't even need to be a book, you can always find a way to print out the next chapter of a fanfic just to give your eyes a break.

#2 Journaling - Pick up a half filled notebook and any old pencil and pen, doesn't have to be aesthetic. You can write about anything; what you like about your favourite colour, or your favourite series, anything that gets you off the internet for a bit.

#3 Card Games - There are loads of one player card games you can learn really quickly, and they all take two packs of cards at most. I'm trying to make all of these free (or at least cheap) and where I live one pack of cards costs around £1.

#4 Wander Aimlessly - This one won't really work if you can't get a bus too anywhere walkable, but learning to dedicate an hour or two to yourself and just listen to music and watch your surroundings is honestly so fun.

#5 Look at Memory Boxes - If you have any old memory boxes you can always give yourself some time to look through them and reminisce (and maybe get rid of things from people who turned out to be not worth remembering).

#6 Doodle - You don't have to be an artist to draw a page full of mindless shapes, don't focus on making it all look nice, just let yourself loose on some scrap paper. You can also try drawing some simple 'zentangle' ideas.

Remember, being online isn't always bad but it can get you in a cycle of doom scrolling. I've found making some silly little tumblr posts and putting them in my queue makes me happy, so I don't need to stop using tumblr but I do have to make sure I don't spend hours per day on tumblr

Okay, OC asks...

Give me one weird fact about/habit that each of your OCs have :)

ahh this is wonderful, thank you so much!! Also, this ask is making me realize how many OCs I have, and this is just the ones I've actively written about (there are 11 here, and there are easily 30+ more that I have stored away because I don't have time to write them yet)

Ah well, let's get into it :D

Mira Hart: She has a set of claws that fold under her fingernails (think like how cats' claws fold back into their paws), and she'll fold and unfold them repeatedly as a means of fidgeting.

Rae McKinney: She never wears rings. Her sister is a nurse, and she's heard way too many degloving stories as a result, so she's not exactly fond of rings. She even wears her wedding ring (once she gets married) on a chain around her neck instead of on her finger.

Azalea Jordan "AJ" Campbell: She'll just randomly air-guitar as a means of occupying her hands. If there's something playing on the radio that she knows how to play, she'll finger along, but she'll also just do it to whatever's in her head. Particularly when she's uncomfortable or bored.

(this may or may not be taken from a stim/habit I have myself...)

Katherine Johnson: Usually she has her sketchbook with her, or at least something to draw on, but if she doesn't she'll find a pen and doodle on her own skin. Often that translates to tracing along the vitiligo marks on her hand, filling them in with patterns and things (like henna mandalas, or zentangle designs)

(this might also be something I do, minus the vitiligo. I actually keep a felt-tipped pen in the inside pocket of my battle jacket specifically for this purpose)

Jasper Wilson: literally always has music. And I mean always. If they don't have their iPod with them (and 99% of the time, they do), they'll hum under their breath or just outright sing whatever's stuck in their head. It helps them focus. Usually this isn't too weird, but they're also the type to sing along to the grocery store speakers in the middle of the produce aisle, because self-consciousness is overrated and it's fun

Quinn/Aces: Always has a deck of cards on hand, usually because they find it fun to leave behind a playing card in exchange for whatever they pickpocket (like when they take One's wallet and leave the Ace of Spades behind). They have a habit of shuffling the cards too, to occupy their hands. She'll also get into contests with Billy and try and nick his things without him noticing, and vice versa. He gets caught a lot more often than she does, lol

She also has a habit of tugging on the back of her Mohawk when she's uncomfortable, or just fidgeting with it in general (once again, a habit pulled from my own life)

Indigo: Whenever she wears her toolbelt, she'll tap her fingers along the tools to count them (like how you pat your pockets to check for keys, wallet, phone, etc.). Half the time, it's not even a conscious count, she'll just innately know if something's missing or out of place

Robin Cassidy: Hates having her hands restrained, except under very specific circumstances. She uses sign language, so having her hands restrained is like putting a muzzle on her. Peter's just about the only one who can hold her hand regularly, because he knows her well enough to let go when she needs to speak.

Ophelia Octavius: This one's not quite outwardly visible, but she's grown so accustomed to having the actuators on her back that she'll fire off mental commands to them even when she's not wearing them. It's hard to describe, so here's an example: a plate falls off the shelf and breaks, she'll call off the actuators to let them know it's not a threat, even though she's not wearing them.

And it goes the other way too: when she's wearing them, she sometimes forgets that they're not exactly normal or inconspicuous, and will accidentally freak out a few passers-by

Madison Douglas: She spent five years living in the wilderness, and even after moving to the X-Mansion (where she's got plenty of food, safety, etc), she'll find herself squirreling away nonperishable food without even really realizing it. She gets better about that after a while, but sometimes she'll clean her room and realize she's got granola bars and cans of soup hidden under her bed, in the back of her closet, tucked at the bottom of her backpack. She knows she's safe and doesn't plan on leaving any time soon, but it's just automatic to take the opportunity of food wherever she can.

Prometheus: They need to have their torch with them at all times. If they don't have it with them (i.e. in (Farewell) Wanderlust), they'll have a handheld lighter or candle to make up for it. Basically, they just need to have fire with them. Not to commit arson (thank you Emily), just to have it nearby.

Something special for my local (Windsor, Ontario) Zentangle® enthusiasts - “Frequent Tangler” cards! Attend 9 Tangle Clubs and get the 10th for free!

Ten Thousand Tangles Creative Community Tangle Club (“Tangle Club” for short) gatherings are normally held once a month on a Sunday afternoon. These sessions are less structured than regular Zentangle and Zentangle-Inspired Art classes, and are open to all regardless of previous Zentangle experience. Participants are given the freedom to explore the month’s project or theme, with direction and/or instructions provided by me, or work on their own individual tangle project if desired. The cost for each session is $20 per person.

All required tools and supplies for the monthly project are normally provided by me for use during the Tangle Club session. Participants may also wish to bring their own selection of preferred items including Pigma Micron pens, Gelly Roll pens, graphite pencil, white charcoal pencil, tortillions, coloured pencils, watercolours or watercolour pencils and brush, etc.

A zentangle a day

In one of my collage art classes we are creating these intricate design cards called zentangles. Zentangles are a type of meditative art that create designs using intricate and repetitive patterns to create beautiful works of art.

The process is quite simple and could be recreated by anyone, with or without art experience. Each day we create a new zentangle using the instructions from our textbook which offers us new design to try out and design something cool as well as incorporate designs from previous zentangles to improve the design aspect.

Something I do like about creating these zentangles is that they are easy to do and I also find them quite relaxing. It is nice to take a break in between my larger assignments to work on these, it gives my brain a little time to rest before going back to work.

Some of my classmates might find it a bit monotonous to create similar designs in black and white every single day but I quite like them. If you want to incorporate art into your day to day life or even just every once and a while I definitely recommend looking this process up and trying it out yourself, it is a very calming activity and might even help you in your day to day life.

Zentangle Reflection

In the beginning, I didn’t think I was going to like them. They just seemed tedious and something I could do within minutes, but turns out there really fun! I mean the latter thought is true, but that something that adds to it. You can do this anywhere, anytime as long as you have a piece of paper and a fine point pen. Turns out I actually really like doing them, and even designed a card to my mom based off of the designs taught to me from the book.

Speaking of the book, it does exactly what I need for it to do to make me understand. By adding step by step photos, along with word directions on how to do each tangle, I’m able to understand it a lot more. I personally am a visual learner, always have been and always will, so this helps me a lot.

I also like the creative freedoms that I’m able to have well doing these zentangles. Not a single on has to be exactly like it is in the book. Yes, some are harder then others and I’ve decided to stick close to the book designs, but where’s the fun if you don’t have a few challenges a long the way?

In the end 10/10 stress reliever

My cards for the Jacksepticeye Card Exchange (@jsecardexchange) for 2018 and 2019 respectively. 

(More backstory below the cut!)

I did the first one in like a day; I remember watching a christmas movie with my parents and vigorously working on it...Then I did the second one in like...a month and sent it out at an embarrassingly late date XD  

As I did the second one I remembered the first one didn’t seem christmassy enough, and then I found it again and I was like “...Why would I ever use black in a christmas card?” XD I think it just didn’t cross my mind not to really. Plus, I was rushed, as mentioned so I wasn’t thinking super clearly. 

I really like the second one though!! Of all the times I’ve used that pattern on the sides, I think this it’s my favorite. It’s interesting to see the subtle ways my art changes between the years. 

The jsecardexchange has been such a source of light in my life these past few years. I was mentally in one of the worst places in my life during November/December 2018, and not being able to see any of my relatives for Christmas added greatly to that. Being able to receive cards and little nice messages from people on the internet was more helpful than I’ll ever be able to express. I really needed a little something to brighten my days during that time and it definitely accomplished that. I’m so grateful for it.
