In Stormblood, there's a scene that reveals Zenos saving Asahi. You know the one. Where Asahi falls madly in love with the man. Because he's big. And strong. And saved his life.

But for Zenos, it was Tuesday.

Anyhoo, I got to thinking about that scene because it has a mirror to it in Endwalker.

See, in the Stormblood scene, Zenos just swooshes his sword and knocks out these resistance fighters of ol' Kaien's. He isn't even doing a light jog to get to them. Just swish and they're no longer a problem. And he obviously didn't do it to, like. Save Asahi. Asahi just happened to be saved. All Zenos is doing is His Duty, which is to take out the enemy soldiers on the battlefield.

In Endwalker, the mirror to this scene is when he kills the blasphemy that's about to strike down a Thavnarian refugee. Thankfully, the NPC doesn't fall madly in love with him this time. But, again, for Zenos...it's a Tuesday.

And when asked, "Why are you here?" he's just like, "There are beasts here to kill. So I killed them. ...They suck, by the way."

It kinda makes me laugh. On the one hand, "Oh, Zenos. Still being Zenos," but also, on the other.

This is not that different from any time the WoL does a Duty where you have to go kill all the soldiers, or kill all the monsters, or kill whatever, saving innocents in the process, and then later on down the road, in some side quest or role quest or job quest, there's NPCs like, "Hey! Remember me! I was this person you saved this one time at band camp!" And your options are like, "Oh. Yeah. That Guy." Or, "Smile and wave, boys. Just smile and wave."

Because for WoL, it was also Tuesday.

But the WoL is happy they were able to save NPC whilst Zenos is like, "I forgot I even did that, like, 10 minutes after I did it. And I don't care now. Good for you, though, I guess."

i know a lot of people (very understandably) dislike the paladin job quests in ffxiv, particularly HW, but i do think it's fun that, now that the pre-ShB MSQ revamp is complete, paladins now have a very cool and thematic in-game storyline that happens without a word being spoken: the development of passage of arms.

none of the below is directly stated in the script, but imo it's a fairly obvious gloss on what the game presents, if you assume a paladin warrior of light. spoilers for all expansions through the end of 6.X.

in the new version of steps of faith, as vishap breaks through each ward protecting ishgard from attack, lucia mounts a final desperate effort to hold him back, with a very familiar looking animation:

but even lucia can't hold back vishap's flame alone, so the temple knights surge forward to assist her. their efforts make the shield visually more powerful and larger. the temple knights here band together in defense of ishgard, and their knightly resolve to protect their home is the difference between victory and defeat.

lucia and the knights do ultimately succeed in defending the last ward, as you have to defeat vishap before their shield falls or you lose.

later in heavensward, obviously, we will get ffxiv's most famous (failed) attempt at blocking something with a shield.

this moment can be read as fairly impactful on the warrior of light's development; as i've noted elsewhere, after the trauma of watching haurchefant bleed out in their arms at level 57, at level 58 paladins learn to channel their magic into healing (and it's called "clemency," or mercy. mercy for whom? who was guilty?), and as someone pointed out on that post, at level 58 dark knights used to get "sole survivor", letting them heal in response to a marked target's death.

for a time, you literally carry haurchefant's shield with you, and 3.3 very much literalizes in genre fashion the idea that even when you are standing alone, your fallen friends stand with you. you don't need to call any allies to stand at your side and raise their shields with you because they are already there, in spirit.

stormblood marks a pretty important turning point in the warrior of light as a combatant, in my opinion, and the text makes this clear in several ways. first, in pretty much all your jobs, you've now far exceeded your trainers and are pioneering new techniques. this is no less true of paladin, which for 60-70 abandons any trainers at all for you to show off your peerless skills in a tournament.

second, stormblood is straight up a story about you getting stronger. at level 61, zenos kicks your ass. at level 70, you kick his ass. why? because you fought and got stronger and developed incredible new techniques and became a one-man army.

for a lot of classes, this story lines up nicely with the big rotation changes or flashy new finishers on the way from 60 to 70. SMN is now busting out bahamut and casting akh morn; RDM gets verflare and verholy; DRG starts harnessing nidhogg's power directly through dragon sight and nastrond.

the tanks are divided in two: warriors and gunbreakers get huge damaging upgrades at 70 in the form of inner release and continuation, each of which lets them hit the same button many times for lots of damage and satisfying animations. paladin and dark knight get more protective abilities; dark knight gets the blackest night, and there's been plenty said about that already by pretty much everyone.

paladins get passage of arms. instead of a relentless new attack (and you get requiescat at 68, which is a way bigger deal for your dps rotation), your big reveal at 70 for zenos in your fight in ala mhigo is a superior way to protect your party, a shield that lets you stand for your allies so they never have to fall for you again. it's lucia's same shield, except you need no allies' shields to reinforce you, proof of your martial prowess and your ability to transcend limits, and perhaps in truth a reminder that you never really stand alone.

in many respects passage of arms should really feel like a paladin signature move to you now if you are playing it at this point, because you should be popping it in pretty much every fight (you are using your mits, right...?). basically every FFXIV fight has at least one big AOE with downtime that warrants passage of arms usage, usually after the mid-fight add phase with slowly filling bar. since that AOE usually drops during downtime, there's no reason not to pop passage of arms (which otherwise restricts your movement and actions), and even on normal, sometimes every little bit counts on a damage check even if it means dropping DPS (thinking here of harrowing hell P10N on release, which was...less consistent for a lot of roulette parties than you might hope).

so from 70 onward, passage of arms is in a sense a paladin warrior of light's signature move, and certainly the one a player gets to most actually enjoy (since if you're using it, you're by necessity not doing anything besides moving your camera and admiring your sick animation). it doesn't have any competition in terms of spectacle until confiteor, and those you're usually throwing out in the middle of movement.

it's such a signature, in fact, that the only other person shown using your one-person version of passage of arms is your greatest admirer, who studied your legend for over a century.

and it's when he fails (should've popped arm's length, bud) that the warrior of light decides they can't let their friends fall for them, and sends them away with the transporter beacon. this is all wrong: you were meant to die for them, not the other way around. yours is the shield that stands between your allies and defeat. it is you who will win this passage of arms and break your opponents lance. and you do.

and then later, when they need to quickly establish zero's domain as a place of fallen grandeur, the home of someone who once believed in heroes but is now a cool and cynical vampire hunter d, what do they use? a decayed statue of someone in the paladin endwalker gear doing the passage of arms animation, of course.

from a visible instantiation of knighthood as a joint effort to defend what is sacred, to a tribute to the fallen friends whose memories stand by you and animate you, to a symbol of the wol's power as emulated by their allies or darkly mirrored in other shards.

not bad for a mit button you hit once per fight and otherwise never think about!

Mike sheds his summer coat all at once but he still loses a lot of fluff, Illumi uses so many lint rollers it's insane.

Killua and the gang buy random phone numbers on Craigslist to bully Illumi and whenever he gets these texts, he kicks his feet like a little girl.

Silva told all the other Zoldycks not to buy Killua a birthday present so he could seem like the best dad ever and comfort his son when the rest of the family “forgot”

Kikyo is a flat earther.

Hisoka finds Illumi’s hair everywhere in his apartment.

Hisoka is actually a natural ginger but he covers up his freckles with texture surprise and dyes his hair.

Milluki hates Killua because in his eyes his brother took everything from Illumi (he did but it wasn't his fault) and he knows Illumi won't hate him so he feels like he has to do it for him.

Milluki is always worried about Illumi because well... He's Illumi.

Milluki and Illumi flip each other off if they pass by each other in the hallway.

Chrollo spams Illumi with texts equivalent to “Quit your job, join my emo band”

Whenever Illumi returns from an especially long mission, Kikyo picks him up when she hugs him.

Zeno gave up his role as head to Silva on the condition he got a say in what happened to Killua, he doesn't care about any of the other kids and won't do anything about Silva being a terrible human being as long as it doesn't affect Killua.

Illumi talks about his siblings so much (Especially Killua but that was implied) that sometimes Hisoka feels like he’s dating a single mom.

Illumi loves his mother but secretly feels that he would be a better fit as Killua’s mother despite being a man.

Zeno constantly makes fun of Silva for letting Kikyo dress their sons up as little girls and “Giving in to his woman”

Since the Zoldycks are immune to poisons, Kikyo wears dresses in authentic scheele’s green and to build up tolerance the Zoldycks would give their children toys painted with it.

When Killua was little, Illumi used to just sit on his bed and watch sleep all night; gently stroking his hair every now and then.

Kikyo is manic, she hurts her children and then cries about them being hurt while bandaging them up.

Kikyo’s mood changes rapidly, with Illumi she is jealous of him and berates him half the time and is the most supportive mother the other half.

Not really a headcanon but if Illumi can sharpen his nails like Killua, which I assume he can, I feel bad for Hisoka though he probably enjoys it.

Illumi can crack all his joints and it freaks Milluki out.

The Zoldyck siblings are mad creative with insults.

Kalluto has 3 dads and none of them are Silva (Chrollo, Phinks and Illumi)

Illumi is very nitpicky once he comes out of his shell.

Hisoka and Illumi have specialty weapons that are a lot higher quality for when they eventually fight each other.

Illumi tried to summon a demon because Hisoka told him he needed a hobby and he wasn’t sure what to do, Chrollo happily volunteered as the sacrifice.

Illumi enjoys embarrassing his siblings.

The phantom troupe members always ruffle Kalluto’s hair when they walk by him.

Hisoka blasts music while getting ready and Illumi smashes dishes to drown out the sound because he thinks Hisoka’s music is trashy.

Illumi has all of his siblings baby teeth in a jar on his nightstand.

One time Gon tried to make his own orange juice but he added salt instead of sugar to it and cried.

Kalluto knows fan language and uses it on Zushi who is absolutely oblivious.

Illumi organizes when he’s stressed but eventually he runs out of things to organize som he goes into Milluki’s room and cleans. Milluki used to get pissed but now he’s found out that he can pretend he did it an only gets slightly annoyed.

Kalluto and Illumi have a long standing game where Kalluto will try to land a hit on Illumi as he goes about his day to day, he’s only be successful four times and usually ends up getting held upside down by his feet.

Hisoka actually has a lot more aura than it seems, he just uses a lot of it on bungee gum to keep his ridiculous outfits in the right places.

Illumi throws pins around his room when he’s bored but it drives Milluki nuts because they share a wall.

TLDR; zenos is a guy that gets his ass beat one (1) time and immediately becomes emotionally attached to the player character to the point of absurdity. and by absurdity i mean He Wants You. he wants you so fucking bad. he fuses with a god-dragon, comes back from the dead like three separate times, and jumpstarts the end of the world all so he can get your attention and have Just One More Battle against you. he insistently calls the player his first and only friend and he's actively upset when you ignore him to combat the end of the world- an end he jumpstarted as an attention-seeking maneuver- because it means he isn't getting the fulfillment he wants. then a teenager tells him he's cringe and he genuinely takes that to heart and proceeds to turn back into a dragon, fly to the edge of the universe, show up just in time to help you combat the embodiment of despair (long story), and save the world he nearly ended just because he's finally realized it's the only way to get your attention long enough for the fight he's always dreamed of. he's simultaneously the player's biggest opponent as well as their greatest supporter. he has unwavering faith in his ""friend"" to face whatever challenge dares to oppose them and god forbid if that challenge isn't himself. he's an absolute lunatic that NEEDS to be put in his place, and his ultimate death at the player's hands is a result of his own unwavering obsession with facing them in all-out combat to the point of becoming universal enemy number one just so he's worth fighting in the first place.

and when you look at the zenos MTG card, it captures all of this perfectly.

when he enters the field, he arbitrarily picks one (1) opponent to soulbond himself to, and brushes aside everyone else in the vicinity. note how he transforms only when they leave, not when they explicitly die- simply getting banished from the battlefield is enough to transform him! he gets mad when his friend walks away! he actively seeks them out and becomes a gamewide threat just so he can face them head on! and, as that threat, he immediately becomes public enemy number one, forcing the other players to either band together and beat him and/or protect his chosen target with their (literal) lives. he's Literally a transcendent rival. he's threatening to end the world just so he can have his desired fight to the death. he's the perfect translation of a self-obsessed maniac becoming obsessed with someone to the point of absurdity and it is so fucking peak.

I fi may request a dad!Ace x mom!reader where they teach their kid to punch bad guys using a marine or enemy pirate. Ace, in complete shock, yells like, "Why would you do that?" but the reader points out 'its better to start early,' and references his childhood, much to his annoyance. Ace, while nervous, loved the chance to be a dad. He respected Gold D Roger as the king of the pirates, but we saw in his backstory that he hated him as his dad. His relationship with his father was very lacking. The only thing his dad left him was the stigma of his blood. This is something Ace had to grow up with. While he was fending for himself, he also had to tackle the impact of Gold D. Roger. This led Ace to become a pirate and fight against what society said about him. It's also what led him to find a family with Pops and the white-beard pirates. Whitebeard wasn't a name that brought shame to his existence. He provided a family and support system outside of Luffy and (as far as he was aware) the deceased Sabo. It probably combated a lot of loneliness Ace didn't realize he felt. Pops probably became a genuine father figure. (highkey and unnecessary trauma dump rn, but I am so jealous of Ace bc I wish my dad was not present and despite my need for independence I still oddly crave a father figure despite how I push them away) That's where a lot of his healing came from. He learned to embrace who he was and live as Fire Fist Ace, Division Commander of the White Beard Pirates. Not the damned Gold D Rogers bastard son. His sense of self and individuality. But he had a chance to maybe make up for it. With the woman he loved. When you got pregnant, he saw another future. One where he could do right by being present. Of course, there's the fear of what his child may think of him as a pirate. But it wasn't going to stop the baby on the way. Ace would provide a life for you and your baby. He would also be very attentive during pregnancy, given how his mother passed. And you had a baby girl, he was outnumbered by you. She's as rambunctious as her father. The toddler phase brought out the will of D. His baby could never hate him, but she could turn into him. Dealing with himself is something Ace was not prepared for. Especially as he walked onto the deck of the moby dick to see his darling girls and … some pirates. "What?" he stood there stunned before walking over to get a better look "What are you doing with our daughter?" You smiled up at him, holding a raggedy and bruised pirate in a full Nelson "ya know, just teaching her young" Right in front of you was your little girl. Dark hair in a ponytail and band-aids on her knuckles. "Look Dad I knocked out his tooth," she said holding the tooth up in her little hand. "That can't count honey, I think it was loose" you teased at her. Ace sighed, picking up his little girl and grabbing the tooth out of her hand. "I don't think she needs to be learning this so young" Tossing the tooth away and looking over at you. "Garp taught you young; you turned out just fine." He opened his mouth and closed it, squeezing his daughter closer to his chest, holding her desperately, scared of the idea of her growing up. "That old bag just wanted me to be a marine." "Yeah, and well, he left you with mountain bandits." At that, he chuckled, looking between you and your child. "Maybe we should visit Grandpa soon?"

Since Btmo is set in the 80s what kind of music do the characters like?

This isn't a question we've thought about a lot for some of these characters, so some of these answers are based on vibes haha. If we say something else later in-game, please take that as the actual canon! Abraxas - Classical music

Circe - Gothic rock, but she's also fond of jazz

Dante - Will listen to songs he heard on nights out, or (more rarely) songs that remind him of his childhood

Edgar - Whatever's on the radio, or whatever Circe's currently listening to, he doesn't listen to a lot of music on his own time

Iridis - Nope

Nocturne - Mostly listens to music when she's working, so something not too distracting. On a night out, she likes going to places where they play dance music (edm, synth-pop, etc)

Raoul - He has some French music that he likes a lot

Zeno - Anything loud and fun. He doesn't remember the titles or the bands, so if he "loses" a song - that's just how it is!

Rayashki and Zeno: How a harsh environment shapes actions.

Sometimes, a perception is taken as a principle. A "cruel reality" can be described as a negative perception of the material world, used to assert a situation. "Reality is cruel", however consists in using the previously descrived perception as a fundamental truth or a proposition in which to base the foundations of a system of belief, of behaviour or of a chain of reason. Both are heavily present in Farewell Rayashki, a story all about the strenght of the colective, the indomitable human spirit in the face of adversity and what shapes the actions of those who persue a goal. With that in mind, I wanted to write... Not an analysis per se, but rather to build some sort of structure or perspective (whatever you want to call it) through which the story can be analyzed.

Now, imagine a matrix diagram where the X-axis goes from "Gemeinschaft" (Community) to "Gesellschaft" (Society), two terms taken from german sociologist, Ferdinand Tönnies, and the Y-axis goes from "Deontic" to "Epistemic" in a mix between a Gretchen McCulloch's linguistic sense and a Józef Maria Bocheński's philosophical sense. If everything I just said made no sense, don't worry. Here's a (very) rough explanation of what I'll mean with these two dichotomies through this post: X-axis: A classification of societal ties. "Gemeinschaft" refers to personal, direct interactions with emotional relationships (such as families or small towns like Rayashki) formed by people who strive to archive the goals of a collective. "Gesellschaft", on the other hand, is about indirect and formal interactions, with more rational relationships (like a company or an institution like Zeno) in which everyone band together to persue personal goals in common. Y-axis: A classification of actions as both modality (McCulloh) and authority (Bochenski). Roughly: "actions based on interpretations and beliefs done by someone with an authority based on their ammount of knowledge and experience" (Epistemic)" vs "actions based on rules and/or desires done by someone with a role or position that gives them the power to enforce them" (Deontic).

Upper-left: Gemeinschaft/Epistemic

Windsong's quest, mostly percieved as a fool's errand, is a classic underdog story. The lone reasercher who, disheartened by the lack of support from all the important academic institutions and societies, finds in the small town of Rayashki a more hospitable enviroment to persue her goals. She creats emotional conections with the community and soon finds more self-fulfilment in helping the townfolk than in other things like taking Zeno's offer or abandoning her studies, which are presented as more beneficial options from a rational point of view.

She confronts the notion of "cruel reality" and rejects "Reality is Cruel" as a principle. This action comes from what she knows (her study of ley lines) and beliefs (the people of Rayashki, the usefullness of her field of research).

Bottom-Left: Gesellschaft/Epistemic

You'll think he should be at the opposite side of Windsong BUT Bertolt, as the classical evil guy in your everyday underdog story, actually rejects the notion of "cruel reality", and accepts "Reality is Cruel" as a principle. His emotional detachment from the people of Rayashki, their values, and even their very same idea of community, comes from his role as a member of Zeno, an institution that exemplfies the impersonal and formal relationships of the Gesellschaft. He doesn't see himself as the evil corporate guy who's there to destroy their dream for a greedy goal, but as the savior who comes to provide the light of rationality to this uncultured rural people who are willing to risk their lives for the sake of primitive traditions and values. He defines himself as a "simple representative of Zeno, bound by their rules and orders, working tirelessly to help people in a world wreaked by The Storm", a description that allows him to minimize his negative perception of the reality of others while justifying operating under the principle of Reality is Cruel.

Bottom-Right: Gesellschaft/Deontic

Evgeni is shown through the story as a leader of Rayashki who deeply cares about his community BUT is willing to destroy it for the sake of a rational goal: protecting the lives of the townfolk.

He embraces the notion of "cruel reality", and accepts "Reality is Cruel" as a principle.

But how is HE in the opposite side of Windsong, instead of Bertolt? In Tönnies dichotomy of Gesellschaft and Gemeinschaft, the relationships that are meant to keep people in communities and societies can also push them out: is all about wether the social ties become too tight or too lose to help us find self-fulfilment in them. Windsong found in a community what she couldn't find in society (validation and encouragment for her study of ley lines), while Evgeni thought he found in a society what he couldn't find in his community (a positive prospective for the people of Rayashki).

Upper-Right: Gemeinschaft/Deontic

While Bertolt is a man of the world, trying to expand the benefits of globalization by placing the needs of bigger groups above those of the little ones, what Vila is persuing isn't just a goal to archive, but a dream to share. She didn't became a part of Rayashki only to build an utopia: everyone living there were already doing that and Vila found meaning in developing strong emotional ties with everyone as they strive together to work hard for Rayashki.

However, unlike Windsong, she accepts the notion of "cruel reality", even if she doesn't agree with "Reality is Cruel" as a principle. This one si a bit tricky to explain.

It all comes down to their experiences while chasing their dreams and how that shaped their understanding of what a dream is.

For Vila, is something that kept her going. A cherished wish that inspired her to leave the rusalki and search for a new home. A goal she could share with the people of Rayashki. A hope to cling unto while she nourishes the sprouts of Rayashki while they are passengers of the ship called "St Pavlov's Foundation" while adrift in the vast sea of the outside world, so they can carry on the spirit of Rayashki. She accepts the "cruel reality" as something that could hinder her dreams, force her to adapt them, but never crush them.

For Windsong, the dream was but a promise turned into a burden. It was not something that comforted her if held tight, but rather something it pained her to let go. Accepting the "cruel reality" meant letting something die, and for someone who was struggling in all fronts, it meant taking a toll way to big for her to handle.

As the last ley line hunter, the dream is but a gamble turned into an investment. The chance of failure is there no matter what. Only thing she can do, is to work hard to reduce it as much as possible. To her, a "cruel reality" is something that crushes dreams. Is not enough to reject the use of this perception as a principle: her own experiences taught her that the perception itself can be a cancer. She might have a tendency to put herself down, to have doubts on what she does and to even be "realistic" in any situation she encounters. But there's ALWAYS a part of her fighting her perception of reality from turning into a negative one even if she lacks the proper arguments or mental state to do it effectively. Vila noticed that from day one, and began to slowly share with her the tools Windsong lacked, helping her become a more confident and capable person, while inadvertibly gaining a trusty partner to rely on.

Their experiences shaped them into people who complement each other incredibly well. Leaning into each other, they'll plant their seeds of hope into a new generation. For the study of ley lines; for Rayashki; for those who live in a world affected by The Storm; for those who'll survive it. *** To anyone who'll read this... whatever the hell it was till the end, thank you for time!
