Present and Future
"Good morning, Princess!"
Zelda's smile, a wonder significantly more common in the modern age, shone through the early morning fog. "Welcome back to Hateno, Purah! It's wonderful to see you again." A tiny hand stretched out from the sling cradled against her chest.
“Aw, is that the baby?!” At Zelda's approval, Purah peeked inside the cloth to see a golden baby stretching. “Oh, She's gotten so big since I last saw her.”
“She's got her father's snout…” Zelda chuckled, lifting a tiny wrist. “And his paws, too. It's fascinating! The traits that dictate the brunt of the Wolfbred tribe's differences from Hylians would appear to be dominant in a first-generation hybrid!” Her voice fell off for a few awkward seconds before her grip tightened on the baby's small wrist.
“What's wrong?”
“Just… we almost lost her so many times…  more times than I can count on my hands…”
Purah gripped Zelda's shaking hand with her's. “But you didn't. Despite all odds, she made it. She was born healthy and happy, and she's thriving now. Her Papa was a significantly riskier baby, and he made it through! She's fine, Zelda.”
Tears Zelda didn't even know were forming creeped out the corners of her eyes as she looked down at the little one snuggled against her chest. Purah was right. Despite the sheer number of near-misses Zelda's pregnancy carried, both Zelda and Zelda Ivee made it to the other side alive. She was a miracle in so many ways, and now her parents got to cherish her instead of fretting about her survival.
“Speaking of her papa, where is good ol’ Linky?”
A laugh finally broke across Zelda’s burdened visage. “Come with me.” With a light beckon of the hand, she led Purah across the village to the Great Ton Pu Inn.
By the time they'd reached the small two-pot cooking station, Purah could see the form of a blond man laying underneath the inn's balcony. She chuckled as Zelda climbed the first small flight of the Inn's stairs to sit next to the tiny sapling near Link's head. “He's prepared for rain, now isn't he?”
“Yes,” Zelda gently reached underneath the balcony and brushed a yellow butterfly off Link's nose. “He's hunkered down, as they say, for a long nap.”
“Does he normally sleep outside the house?”
“Outside of the house’s actual footprint, you mean? Yes, he does spend a lot of time sleeping outside the house. If you mean whether he sleeps a lot off of our property, then it depends. If I’m at home then he’ll usually stay around there too.” She chuckles, stroking her daughter’s head while admiring her husband. “On the ground level to the second floor if it’s sunny, under the roof between the two second-floor windows if it’s rainy, somewhere out in the yard if he’s not feeling too great. When he gets really anxious, I’ve even seen him climb up onto the pergola over the door and lay down there! Really, wherever he can get to that doesn’t cross the bridge. If I’m out amongst the town, then he could really be found sleeping anywhere between the Ginner Woods and Hateno Bay. Although, while I’m working he usually hangs out either at home or at the school. He doesn’t tend to wander much then. He seems to prefer locations resembling a kind of open-air stall, with a roof but no walls. I built him a little hutch on the eastern side of the house near the big tree recently, for when he starts having joint trouble and can’t get up to his more preferred spots as easily.”
“Yes, he is getting older… Do you have a reason to think he’ll start having problems soon? There’s still a whole decade before Link’s officially a senior Wolfbred.”
She sighed, reaching under again to brush hair out of Link’s sleeping face, a somber expression glimmering as she viewed the faint markings present on Link’s forehead, as well as his multitude of facial scars. “I’m really worried about his right leg. That ball joint was a concern for the medical staff even before the Calamity… I guess I’m just worried about dysplasia. And those super small joints he’s got in his knees, Father always said they were a poster case for early arthritis. He really abused that right knee as a knight, so I’m worried it’s not going to last much longer.” She shook her head and forced a laugh. “I really shouldn’t worry too much, he just turned nineteen.”
Purah laughed, disturbing Link slightly. “We did just celebrate good ol’ Linky, didn't we?” She smiled as Link's snorts returned to soft snores. “Is he in any pain? If he doesn't seem to be hurting yet, I'd say just make sure he's not jumping off things for now. The researcher in me wants to get a good look at his bones and joints, but I know better than to try and pat him down while he's sleeping. Lasli's still got that scar.”
“Link doesn't seem to be in any pain per se. He seems a little uncomfortable in the humidity, but not pained.”
“Well, my knees are uncomfortable in the humidity, and I was six until recently. He'd probably have to get looked at. Which he won't like.”
“No… no he will not.” Zelda repositioned the cloth cradle around her chest so that the little pup didn't squirm away from her, Zelda Ivee didn't seem to take her mother's security very well and began to fuss. “Hopefully, being in Hateno with the other wolfbred will make Link less fussy. I really don't need to manage him on top of the little one.”
The infant's crying woke Link, he slowly brought himself back up to all fours (although Purah definitely took note that Link was not having the easiest time) and crawled over to his baby. He stuck his snout-like nose into the sling and began to purr, Zelda Ivee calming shortly after grabbing ahold of his snout.
“Aw, good boy, Link. Good dad.” His wife ruffled his hair and kissed his sleepy forehead. She had all kinds of urges to mess with his hair, calling him all kinds of names more befitting a cute dog than a retired hero, but she forced herself to repress them. One hundred years ago, it was common, but it was no longer acceptable for a Hylian to treat a Wolfbred in such a lowly manner.
Purah giggled as the super-soldier sported a giant, goofy grin with his nose being tugged on by a baby. No research paper from the era of the Wolfbred's creation would say that this could possibly be any kind of life for someone like him, but Link clicked right into his role in the village, and his family, like he'd been designed specifically to do so. She'd been worried when Link began to present the disorder that had plagued male Wolfbred just before the exile, that Link's humanity would seep away until he was only an animalistic beast. However; it seemed that, despite all odds, Link was still the same man that Zelda had fallen for a century before. And for her sake, the baby's sake, and the sake of the rebuilding kingdom; that was a gift from Hylia.
Now if only she could figure something out for his stuff joints…

NPC Details in TOTK that I think are interesting/funny
Basically all of these are off the top of my head based on my BOTW knowledge and what I came across while I was playing TOTK!
None of these are main story spoilers, but are obviously spoilers to the game nonetheless!
In BOTW there's this sidequest in Rito Village involving this guy Jogo and his wife Juney on their honeymoon, and they're kind of on the rocks because of Juney. In TOTK, I'm pretty sure they've split up! Juney is one of the sand seal plushie deliverers and Jogo is in a Hebra cabin with another girl, not mentioning Juney at all. By far the funniest thing I've realized through my playthrough
Tasho and Oaki are the two koroks in BOTW that give you the shrine quest where you need to sneak around behind Oaki to get to the shrine, because Tasho is worried about him. In TOTK, Tasho worries about where Oaki has disappeared to, and wonders if he's in the Deku Tree's mouth. They are brothers <3
In BOTW, Manny of Hateno Village has a crush on Prima and there's a sidequest about it. In TOTK, he now has a crush on Ivee because he has not got the girl and Prima is now married.
On the other hand, in BOTW there's a sidequest to get Wabbin and Perda together at the Lovers Pond. In TOTK he has a daughter with her but is thrown in the Gerudo jail for trespassing I think. At least he still sees his daughter.
Zelda deems Symin capable of handling kids because of his experience with Purah. Hilarious
Sesami, Flaxel, Oliff, Canolo and Palme have all truly split up after their quest in BOTW. In TOTK, Sesami is chillin on Eventide Island, Flaxel is a Monster Hunter leader, and Oliff is guarding the entrance of Hyrule Castle. I don't know where Canolo and Palme are haha
Jules, once a tourist to Gerudo Town in BOTW, now works there as an assistant at Hotel Oasis
Before the events of BOTW, Cado and Rola have split up because Cado liked his cuccos so much. This is not resolved in BOTW and you only get this by reading the Journal of Various Worries. In TOTK, after his trip with Impa, he stands outside the arrow shop contemplating how to apologize to her. It's actually kinda sweet I hope they can work things out

Quick question! If you had to pair Link in Breath of the Wild with someone other than Zelda, Mipha, Paya, Riju, who would it be?
B-But… Mipha is the best!
And no Zelda, Paya, or Riju!?
WHAT!!??
Okay uhhh. that a tough one.
Normaly I’d just go down the list of Miph, Paya, Zelda then Riju but I guess Ill  have to do some indexing.
just a sec.
*plays BOTW for 2 weeks*
Okay so after searching the land of Hyrule for a suitable GF for ya boi Link this is what I decided on.
I’ve got 3 possible lady friends.
#3
I think first he’d try his luck at babe central (AKA Gerudo town)
and he would probably come across her…
Tumblr media
1-800-sad-Gerudo-hour / Deltan
Seeings how she just got crushed by some loser I’d figured he’d try to lighten her mood and give her some hope.
Tumblr media
They go on dates, find they like each other, get married have a kid that turns out to be Ganondorf thus a new Zelda story is born.
I’d actually be down with this, but It would work better with Riju honestly (after she gets older of course).
#2
Maybe he’d find love on the road perhaps? A traveler in need of directions or help? Ya know like the whole “chance encounter” kinda thing.
He’d probably end up with this adventurous gal…
Tumblr media
The closest thing to a canon female link / Celessa
Odds are he would help her out in a jam and run into her a few times before asking her if she wanted to adventure together.
Tumblr media
This one could really work actually.
Both are naturally adventurous and quite formidable in combat. It only makes since that he’d go for a girl like this.
And seeings how she wants to retrace Zelda’s footprints, why not do it with the same body guard who accompanied her all those years ago.
She would also kinda remind him of Mipha in a few ways too.
It would make for a great story you guys.
they would also have some awesome kids too.
#1
Me personally I’m just a sucker for the whole “girl next door” concept.
and seeings how Link lives in Hateno village it would only make since for him to go for the small town sweetheart.
I’m talking of course about that cute general store girl…
Tumblr media
weaponized cuteness / Ivee
Theses two would hit it off astoundingly once they found out they each love to cook. And I’m not making this up by the way, go check out her cook book in her room.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I mean come on, its great!
New guy moves in, loves to cook, totally interested in cute girl at the town store(who also loves to cook), visits often, invites her over for some wholesome cookin, slow burn romance ensues.
Shes just so darn cute, and Link seems to cherry pick the cute girls anyway.
It also lines up with his ancestors affinity for farm girls.
Link needs something solid to come back to after all hes been through, and I think if he can’t land it with any of the top girls then Ivee would be the absolute best!
plus their kids would be culinary masters.
But that’s just what I think :)
and thanks for the question!:D
Now I’m back to work!

Hateno Housemates Pt 4 (Post-BOTW Zelink)
its done its finally doneSome domestic Zelink fluff as requested by @liv-andletdie. Part Four of Four! | Part One | Part Two | Part Three | AO3 Link |
Pairing: Zelda x Link Setting: Legend of Zelda, Breath of the Wild (postgame) Words: 2182
For the first time in weeks, Link and Zelda arrived at their Hateno home together, their youthful and chatty voices lilting across the fields of swaying rice and lush green grasses. Medda, the farmer, waved them a welcome when he saw them riding into town, dropping his work to greet them at the gates.
It had only been a matter of time before the people of Hateno realised who Link and Zelda really were. After all, half of them had been at Zelda’s coronation, held to celebrate the completion of the rebuilt Hyrule Castle. The Queen, they would whisper when they saw the pair walking through the village, and her beloved knight - here!
Not that Medda seemed to mind. Royalty or not, a friendly face was always something to be cherished in a land as sparse and dangerous as Hyrule. He walked alongside their horses all the way to the house, excitedly filling them in on the goings on of the village.
“Leon wants to expand the inn, we have a lot more travelers passing through now!” the young man told them. “Oh -- and Ivee and I have been taking care of your garden. It’s looking good, lots ready for to harvest!”
“Ivee?” Link asked. “The girl from the general store?”
“Oh uh!” Medda was caught of guard, his hollow-cheeked face reddening. “She’s fond of cooking, so she likes to garden as well. She offered to help.”
Link and Zelda dismounted, and began securing their horses in the shelter by the house.
“She sweet on you too then?” Link teased.
“Link,” Zelda shot him a disapproving glare.
Medda stood before them, aghast. “No--no,” he was muttering.
“You ought to ask her to cook for you sometime. You could supply the produce. An equal trade.” Link advised as he settled his horse and began to unload their packs.
"You--you really think?” Medda was hanging off his every word.
Zelda walked over to the young man and put a hand on his shoulder. “All he means is show her you care about her. That you think she’s interesting.”
Link was at her side then, having finished with the horses. He stood with his arms proudly crossed at his chest.
“And get a well-cooked meal out of it too!” he added with a grin. Zelda gave him another withering glare, but his grin never fell.
“I--I’ll try that then!” Medda said with a nod, his hands determinedly balled into fists. Link and Zelda watched as their friend walked back into town with a slight spring in his step.
“Is that why you say you like my cooking?” Zelda asked once the young man was out of earshot. “Because you didn’t have to cook?”
“I like your cooking because it’s cooked by you,” Link said sweetly, heading into the house.
“That my point!” Zelda called after him, but Link already had his back to her. Zelda shook her head, and followed him into the house.
The summer rainstorms in Hyrule were almost as fierce as the winter blizzards, and Link and Zelda awoke in the quiet hours of that evening to find their roof leaking in no less than four places.
Both springing from bed -- and nearly tripping over each other in the process -- they rushed out into the pouring rain, heading straight for their storage shed. Inside they fetched three large pails, placing them inside to hold the leaking water. While Link searched the house for a fourth basin to use, Zelda paused by their open front door, transfixed by the rain. The evening was so warm, she realised. She couldn’t remember a time when she had felt warm rain against her skin. The rains in her life had always been cold, bringing only loss, and sorrow, and a memory of failure.
Zelda stepped out into the yard, her arms outstretched. There they were again; the tepid droplets against her skin, soft like an embrace. She raised her face to the sky, seeking to cherish this moment -- to let the memories of the new erase the old.
Link’s voice broke her reverie, and she turned to see him standing in the doorway. “Zelda?” he asked, a puzzled expression on his face. He cocked his head to the side. “You okay?”
“Of course!” she said, returning to the doorway. “Isn’t this wonderful!?” She took Link’s hand in hers and pulled him out into the rain.
“I don’t understand,” he breathed, laughing softly.
“Just enjoy it! You won’t catch a chill from it!”
“I suppose the rain is nice,” he agreed, turning his head towards the sky.
“See!” Zelda gushed. She wrapped her arms around his neck, seizing him in a tight and slightly clumsy hug. They spun through an imagined dance, muddy feet tracing out a waltz, and soon Link was humming softly to keep them in time, the notes soft against the pelting rain. Zelda felt like she could never let him go in that moment. That this would be all she could need; a home in a town with people they knew, where the rain was always warm and the garden always ready for the harvest.
Eventually the rain stopped, and Link and Zelda went back inside.
Link sat at their dining table the next morning, taking a knife and fork to yet another pancake, while Zelda busily mixed up more batter in their kitchen. He hadn’t even taught her this recipe; it must have been something she’d picked up on her travels. The batter was made with banana and cinnamon, and a hint of lemon rind from the tree that Medda had helped them plant in their garden in the Spring.
“This is really good!” he said through a mouthful of food.
“You’re just saying that.” Zelda replied, her attention never leaving her cooking.
“I’m not.” Link stood from his chair, and crossed the room to the kitchen, walking up behind Zelda to wrap his arms around her. “When you gonna let me just love you, Zel?”
Zelda shrugged, and leaned her head back to rest it against his chest. “Maybe I’m just not used to it.”
“Well, get used to it.” Link said, giving her a squeeze. He sat back down at the table, and was just about to dig into another morsel of pancake when he heard a faint beeping coming from the loft.
After Link and Purah had managed to make the message medallion, the Director had worked on creating three more; one for herself, one Impa in Kakariko Village and one for Robbie in Akkala. And while Link and Zelda had the Slate and their own medallion between them, the Sheikah and the Hylians could keep watch over almost half of Hyrule -- able to alert each other almost immediately if there was any trouble.
It was the Akkalan researcher contacting the Slate this time; there had been a cave-in in one of the lower levels of the Citadel. Not only that but a band of Mokoblins that had managed to cross the main bridge and were giving the guards a what-for. Link exhaled in frustration. Another problem to deal with; more work to take him away from this house, and the woman he shared it with.
He dressed, gave Zelda the bad news along with a lingering kiss and his thanks for breakfast, and reluctantly teleported to the Citadel.
Zelda finished packing her things within an hour of Link’s departure. There was no point staying now that he was no longer with her. They had planned to spend two weeks in the village -- a sabbatical from their normally busy lives -- but it seemed that even now there was no escaping their duty. One day, Zelda thought, When things have settled. We’ll come back here, in earnest.
She was leading her horse through the town gates when the sweet voice rang out over the fields.
“Your Grace!” the woman called, and Zelda turned to see a pretty young Hylian with cropped brown hair bounding over towards her. “Before you go!” she said. “I just wanted to make sure everything is sorted in your garden!”
Ivee. “More than sorted,” Zelda smiled at the woman, though her features were twinged with sadness. “It’s better than either of us could have managed.”
“Medda really knows his stuff,” Ivee agreed, a far off twinkle in her eyes. She noticed Zelda’s horse and pack. “You’re heading off so soon? Medda said you and Link were staying for a while.”
“Kingdom running.” Zelda said with a nervous laugh. “It never stops.”
“I can’t imagine. But you’ve got a good Prince Consort by your side, I can tell you most of the ladies in town are jealous.”
Prince...Consort? “Oh, Ivee, we’re not--”
“I know,” Ivee laughed. “But you’ll be getting married, won’t you? I can’t imagine how wonderful that would be!”
Zelda opened her mouth to protest, but then she remembered Medda’s nervous affection for the girl, and the way it was returned when Ivee spoke of him. Let the girl dream, Zelda told herself. Give her the hope you never had.
“Promise not to tell anyone,” Zelda eventually said, giving in.
“I knew it!” Ivee almost cheered. She bid Zelda a good morning, and jogged happily back to her store. Zelda looked down from the gates of Hateno to the mountains of Necluda, and then back towards the Hateno home. Maybe I can stay just a little longer, she thought, maybe Link will only be a little while. She made her decision, and turned her horse around.
Link returned to Hateno less than three days after his initial departure, materialising at the shrine close-by to the home. He breathed a happy sigh of relief when he saw Zelda’s horse still secured in its shelter. Medda and Ivee were working in the garden, and they waved him over when they saw him. It was raining again, but the Hylians didn’t seem to mind.
“Afternoon’s welcome,” Medda said as Link approached. “And many congratulations.”
Link stared blankly at the farmer. “Congratulations?”
“Ivee told me, though she said not to tell anyone.” Medda said, sharing a knowing glance with the shopkeeper. “Yourself and the Queen!”
“I really don’t follow.”
Medda laughed, and just as Zelda opened their front door to step out of the house he said, “You’re engaged! Zelda told us herself.”
Link grinned wide, a big, dumbfounded smile spreading across his face. “Right…” he said slowly, and turned with wide eyes to glare at Zelda, who was stood frozen in the doorway. She’d gone whiter than milk, and was gaping at him with panic written on her face.
“Medda. Ivee.” Zelda said suddenly, her gaze snapping across to the two gardeners. “I think that’s all I need help with today.”
The Hylians must have sensed their transgression, for they simply nodded, politely bidding Link and Zelda goodbye before walking together back into town. Zelda retreated into the house without a word, but Link followed, shutting and locking the front door. He leaned against it with his arms across his chest, while Zelda waited apprehensively by the dining table. All was silent save the patter of rain against their roof, and the water leaking into the pails of water still left around the room.
“You told them we were engaged?” he asked simply, catching her gaze with his.
“No!” Zelda blurted out. And then she started rambling. “That...Ivee! She cornered me! I didn’t want to dash her hopes. I...I haven’t even thought about it! We don’t need to get married, not until we want to, at least!”
Link breathed deep, shyly eyeing the floor and speaking like his words were nothing. “I wouldn’t mind it.”
“I mean I-- wait... what!? ”
“I wouldn’t mind.”
Zelda narrowed her eyes. “Is this you proposing?”
“What? I don’t know. Maybe.”
Zelda looked around their house, and then back to him. ”Would anything change?” she asked wryly.
Link shrugged. “You know, probably not.” he said with a laugh.
“It’s settled then,” Zelda smiled, stepping forward to pull him into an embrace. “If a little, unromantically.”
The sudden warmth of her and the joy of realising what had just transpired between them was almost almost too much for Link. He swept her into a needing kiss, only stopping to breathe an I love you and to savour hearing it said in return.
“Enough! Enough!” Zelda giggled after a time, prying herself away from him. “Look, it’s almost sunset. The general store will be closed soon, and we need some truffles for dinner.”
She unlocked their front door, but Link caught her, wrapping his arms around her again. “Stay,” he half begged. “We don’t need ‘em.”
Zelda pulled herself free and opened the door. “Yes we do, unless you want plain rice balls for dinner again.”
Link stood in the doorway, sulking as Zelda walked towards the town. She stopped, and giggled again when she turned to see him. “Come on, Hero. I didn’t say I was going alone.”
Link sighed; in her company, there was nothing to do but concede. He closed the door to their home, and followed Zelda out into the rain.

I'm tired of trying to determine which parts of Hyrule's Final Stand to use/delete in TOTK-era stories because that's a lot of lore to go through and Zelda went through enough trouble trying to keep Zelda Ivee alive for 100 stinking years so I think that I give up and that my TOTK stories will simply just be in the exact same timeline as HFS as if HFS was BOTW.
Now just time to figure out how many years exactly I'm calling between BOTW and TOTK and who is watching this small magical child when her parents go gallivanting beneath the castle.
Also that Sanctum boss fight with Puppet Zelda/the Phantom Ganons? The opening cutscene? Hello, sweet nightmares....

Link, Wolfbred King - Chapter Two
“Good morning, Link.”
He awoke to the most wonderful scratching of his ears. “Morning, Zels.”
“Zelda Ivee said you two had a fun night last night.”
“Yeah, well I broke Cece and Reede up again before they started fighting.” He tried to stretch himself out, but his wife held him down.
“Zelda Ivee? Could you get the herb salve for your father?”
“Yes, Momma!” The small child hopped off the foot of her parent’s bed, where she’d been sleeping the night before, and headed down to the kitchenette to retrieve her father’s salve.
“Honestly, Link, you need to stay out of their business. Reede’s lived this Hyrule longer than you have, and he’s a little less… volatile.”
“He’s a pushover, Zelda. He’ll do the show by confronting her, but won’t do the work of restoring peace.”
“Link.” She grasped his face. “You cannot keep acting like the town’s overlord. You are better than this.”
“But she's not.”
“Momma! I brought the salve for Daddy!”
“Thank you, dear.” Zelda took the salve gently from her. “Would you go see if the horses still have water? I can refill the troughs in a moment if they are empty.”
“Yes, Momma!” Once the little girl had gone out the front door, Zelda gripped her husband’s face hard enough that couldn't turn away. “Link.” She stared into his eyes until he began to lean away from her. “I know you’re hurting. But that does not give you permission to act like this. You are very quickly emulating the very behaviors you overthrew a century ago. Do not turn my husband into my father. You are better than this.” She released his face, then opened the salve and began to rub it onto Link’s elbows. “Cece is no Shamia. She has no true influence. You are King, my dear, and I can’t have you destroying yourself before our kingdom is restored. You reunited Hyrule’s tribes in your quest to free the Beasts, and that is inclusive of the Wolfbred.”
“The horsies are good, Momma! Can I help Daddy?”
“Thank you! Of course you may. Bring the mighty thistle milk, will you?”
The toddler quickly grabbed the bottle and ran up the stairs. “Got it, Momma!” She held out the bottle so her mother could de-cork it, then handed it to her father. “Here you go, Daddy!”
“Mmm, thank you, princess.” He tipped it back once, then set the bottle and his head down.
“Feeling better?”
“I’m alright. Your momma’s taking good care of me, and so are you.”
“...You can still see me, right?”
“Of course, I’m looking right at you!” He kissed her tiny forehead.
“Why do you hurt, Daddy? I wanna fix it…”
“You can’t fit it, baby, but I wish you could. Daddy’s just old.”
“But all the other daddies are older than you are…”
Zelda set Link’s arm down for a moment and picked up her daughter. “Daddy’s a pedigreed Wolfbred, which means he doesn’t have any Hylian in him like you, or me. Pedigreed Wolfbred get very old much faster then Hylians do.” She reached over and stroked his forehead, a weary purr came from him.
Thinking about what her ancestors did to his made her sick. The Royals of ancient times took the Wolfbreds’ bodies and changed the very nature of their beings for their benefit alone. They encoded synthetic instincts to keep them subservient, they changed the makeup of their bodies… making them stronger than any natural creature no matter the consequences on their health. Her hand tightened over his forehead and she thought.
They tried to domesticate him! He was no less Hylian than a Sheikah, and her ancestors tried to reduce him to a pet! A working animal! And then they just discarded him for ten thousand years when they were done! Her husband was a Hylian man with agency, who cares if he is descended from some ancient werewolf?!
Her beloved was doomed long before Hylia ever chose him. Wolfbred were known for dying in their thirties. Both Link's parents were in their thirties when they passed away, his mother passed from organ failure and his father died in his sleep about a year after the Calamity. Even if his parents hadn't met such early demises, enough genetic problems existed in Link's family line she'd been warned several times during their courtship that she'd likely outlive him. His body was a mere twenty-three years of age, but his right leg was painful and his left eye had begun to fog over around Zelda Ivee's second birthday. Not to mention that he preferred to walk like a wolf, swearing it eased the pain of his hips.
Link's spirit was mostly undampered, thankfully. He was very argumentative when she retired him from the Guard a year ago due to his blind left eye, and since his retirement he'd been getting himself into trouble either by starting fights of his own or trying to end someone else's… like he was currently doing with Reede and Cece. He also still hunted on a nearly daily basis and was a volunteer guard at various stations around the village. The ancient Royal Family had designed him as a soldier and not a lapdog, so his inability to settle down didn't surprise her. He still had the energy of a twenty-three year old man, just with a bad leg, a poor hip, a blind eye and a mountain of emotional issues from the Calamity itself. And she'd expected the leg to go lame prior to the Calamity; honestly, due to how often he would throw his entire body weight onto an already abnormally small joint. Purah had already confirmed his blindness was cataract-related, but because Link is the stubborn man he is, she's not sure whether he had damaged his eye fighting the Divine Beasts (and simply refused to tell anyone until the eye was bad enough that he couldn't hide it) or whether it was because he was aging. She hoped it was Beast-related. If it was aging related, that meant he'd told her nearly immediately about his eye failing. A lack of stubbornness terrified her.
If they were still living prior to the Calamity, the Sheikah probably could have restored his vision, but alas, much of the quality-of-life technology being developed at the time was lost.
“Me and Daddy are gonna play spies with Narah and Nebb still, right?” Her daughter pawed at her arm and she began to rub the salve into her husband's favored leg.
He jerked away once when she tried to rotate the leg onto a better position, she gently pulled him closer. “Of course. You and me are gonna be the best spies.” A puppy's whine came from his lips. “That hurts.”
“I know it does, Link.” She kissed him as she worked.
Link's love for the other kids in the village made Zelda's heart soar. If he was able to settle into a mentor role for these Wolfbred-Hylian children, maybe it could help him move on from his bloody battle days and the days where he and Hylians were enemies. The children adored him. The four school-aged children were especially fond of her, of course, but even the littlest of the village children worshiped the ground Link walked on. And not even because he was a hero! The kids knew nothing about his heroics, or his royal status, he was simply ‘Grandpa Link’ to them, the old Wolfbred who lived out near the village entrance with Miss Zelda and had great stories and even greater food. He was also known for always being willing to wrestle with the children.
Of course, wrestling with multiple children probably wasn't the best for his arthritis, but it kept him in the village and out of trouble. Both Link and the little boys were significantly better behaved after the fact, reminding her of when Revali was alive and the two would always want to duel (and usually would break some amount of property in the process). Perhaps it was just part of being men from warrior tribes. As long as the children's parents didn't mind Link's rough manner of play (which most of them actually appreciated Link for doing so,) she was perfectly happy to let him indulge. He was definitely happier on all fours with children tugging on him from all sides.
His beloved finished rubbing the last of his joints. “Alright, Link, you can get up.” She offered him a hand in case he needed it.
He shook his head when she offered it. “I'm alright, love.” Once he was upright, he took their daughter down to prepare breakfast.
This world was so good for her. In this world, her little Zelda Ivee was one of many, many Wolfbred-Hylian individuals instead of the first one in ten thousand years. She was normal, not a ‘disgrace to the kingdom.’ Although she was supposed to arrive in the Hyrule of a century ago, Zelda was grateful to the Goddess that her daughter made it to the current age. Being able to welcome their little girl, beloved by all the friends they'd lost, helped her move on.
She knew Link would rather be in that Hyrule, despite his daughter's benefit. He did have friends here, but his best friends were buried a very long time ago. His mentors and family were left behind, his ‘safe and familiar’ lost now that he'd regained most of his memories… He'd rather have his sister again, instead of his sister's great-grandson. Reede tried , but he often just ended up butting heads with his ancestor. Link probably gave him a very stern talking to last night. She knew it didn't help that Link usually ended up alone at night, participating in the activities that he and his loved ones participated in with confusion and frustration that the others weren't interested. His culture often just left him so depressed and defeated… he probably felt that his daughter was his only chance at preserving and passing down the ways of the Wolfbred.
She'd originally wanted to press forward with Zelda Ivee's formal education, but decided not to after getting advice from Clavia that her dad should teach her about being a Wolfbred before her mother taught about being a lady. She hadn't realized the sheer amount of social development that Wolfbred have in their first few years of life.
For her next birthday, Zelda Ivee would accompany her father to a cave somewhere in the area and learn their history and why they have the traditions they do, just like Link did with his own father all those years ago.
Another concern that Zelda had uncovered during her research was that Wolfbred struggled with sudden lifestyle changes. They'd either completely avoid the change and protect their familiar or, if forced to change, would showcase signs of anxiety and hostility.
To say Link had a sudden lifestyle change would probably be the understatement of the century. Link had experienced multiple extreme lifestyle changes in the past few years. If the whole ‘waking up after one hundred years’ thing wasn't extreme enough, their daughter was born about four months after he rescued her, she retired him two years later due to blindness, he started developing joint pain at some point doing all of that and he really hadn't done much since her rescue except sit around at home and take care of their daughter. He'd gone from running lengths and lengths every single day to sitting on the floor with an infant.
Maybe an adventure was what her beloved needed to become himself again. A controlled one of course, he was half blind, but an adventure nonetheless.
“Zelda! Breakfast is ready!” Link called from the first floor, waving up at her as she finished placing everything on the desk.
“Coming, Link.” She quickly made her way down the stairs, and over to him. He kissed her happily before providing her with a warm meal, then served their daughter, then himself, and was seated at the table.
Despite his issues, she'd still have to say that Link was probably healthier than he'd been before the Calamity. He'd put on some weight since retirement, but she'd always believed he was a little too slim prior to the Calamity, and he was finally on a healthy sleep schedule instead of pacing around her for all hours of the day and night. It astounded her how stress, a chronic lack of sleep and a diet tailored for Hylian guards instead of tireless Wolfbred men had a more negative effect on his overall health than arthritis and blindness! In fact, the months just before Zelda Ivee's birth were probably the healthiest she'd ever seen him. His joints and eye were still healthy, as far as she knew, and he'd spent the six months prior to that listening to his body's needs. Of course, she'd also never seen him so stressed, but that was to be expected for such a time.
Their little girl was turning out so much like him. She wanted to be just like her dad, to be a real ‘Woofbred’ like him and make him proud.
She'd worried before the Calamity, that such a proud soldier like Link would struggle with a daughter. Of course she didn't tell him such. She didn't want him feeling pressured to ‘perform’ in his parental duties like her own father had often done to her. She confided in Urbosa, as she could not shake the fear with logic alone, and her dear friend assured her that her fears were unfounded.
And Urbosa was right. Link was a wonderful father to their daughter. In her likely biased opinion, he was the best ‘girl dad’ in the entirety of Hyrule. Of course, Zelda Ivee was born with her father's Wolfbred traits - his dewclaw-like thumbs, facial markings, fur-like hair and temperament - and she longed to be like him. Zelda had a fear that Link would not have been so doting had their little one been born with a more Hylian appearance and personality, or without such a strong desire to imitate Link. But, she tried to remind herself, her daughter was incredibly similar in personality to her husband. Link's female carbon copy, Zelda would jokingly say, even though the child had her green eyes, ear shape and figure. There was proof of this, right across the table from her: Zelda Ivee seated in her dad's lap as they ate, talking to her dad in his native tongue.
Zelda sighed in contentment as she ate the wonderful meal her husband had made. How did she get so lucky?

Looks like someone wants to take a nap in her daddy's hair! What better place to be than asleep in Papa's hair with a belly full of milk? Will she make it before she falls asleep?
Oof, Link got all kinds of torn up in the Calamity. Poor old boy :(
His wifey and daughter still love him though. Zelda Ivee doesn't know him any other way :3

Link, Wolfbred King - Chapter One
Link had had enough.
Yes, he’d promised her he’d try to get along. But thank the Goddess that he hadn’t promised he would get along.
She’d fallen asleep in the well again, and he’d just lifted her out and put her in bed when he heard it.
His ears whipped up in every direction before he began scurrying on the ground like the feral beast he was. Two familiar voices. One thick with chuffing, one heavy in an opposite way.
“You are blind to oppose me! In just a few years I have completely revamped and revitalized this dusty old town.”
“Now listen here. I have nothing about how you choose to go about your business. But to completely ignore thousands of history just so you can go at your whim? I can’t allow you to tempt a dark history into repeating itself. Besides, your business can’t permanently disrupt the business of others, so you’ll either need to tone it down several notches or we’re going to have other chats.”
They continued on like this, just like usual. The spiteful tone had only returned fairly recently, and although she had originally been born here, she was not one of them.
“Daddy?”
It took all Link’s willpower from jumping out of the bush and revealing himself. When he finally processed the source of the noise, a small child bearing his pricked up ears was looking up at him with wide, moon-filled eyes. A rush of relief came flowing through him, as air left him in the same way. “It’s just you.”
“Whatchu doing, Daddy?” She crawled closer, whispering as she tried to peek at his view.
“I’m just patrolling, pumpkin. It’s past time for little pups to be in bed, what are you doing out?”
“Heard you growlin’.”
“People are yellin’, pumpkin.” He nuzzled the small child’s forehead. “Gotta keep you and Momma safe if they get out of hand.”
“Momma says you’re tree tired. You should go to bed.” “No, no, baby. Retired. And it has nothing to do with bedtime.” He bent over as much as his hips would let him. “We should get you to bed. Momma’s already asleep.”
“Daddy’s not sleepin’! No sleeping till Daddy go bed.”
“Okay, okay. But your momma is not gonna be pleased.”
“Climb on your back?” “Sure, pumpkin.” He bent down a little further to allow the small child access to his shoulders. Thankfully, he was able to get low enough to prevent his hair from being used as a ladder. “Let’s show ‘em who’s boss around here. Right, my little princess?”
“Mmhm! Daddy’s in charge!” She clung to the collar of his tunic as her father rose to all fours and began to trot towards the bickering pair.
“Ey!” The pair instantly silenced as Link came down the path. “Quit bickering, it’s late!”
“Ah, Grandpa. Sorry.”
“I thought it was understood that dark hours were quiet hours?”
Cece made a noise of indignance. “If such a matter exists, what’s with all the howling when the moon’s out?”
“I said ‘dark hours,’ not ‘night.’ Full moon doesn’t count.”
“What about moonless nights? You guys get rowdy then too.”
“That’s a ritual. Interrupt our funeral rites and I’ll show you just how good my patience normally is.”
Reede growled softly. “Cece. I wouldn’t advise antagonizing him.”
She ignored Reede’s warning. “So who gives you the authority to decide that one group gets to use the dark hours for events, and the rest of us can’t?”
“Excuse me? I am your King, Hylian!”
“Last time I checked, only female descendants of the Goddess had authority over Hylians, of which you are neither. And don’t get any bright ideas with the toddler.”
“Leave.” Link felt Reede nudge him.
“Don’t explode on her, Grandpa. It’ll just make her a martyr. Your wife’s got enough on her plate.”
Link rolled his eyes and growled. “I’ll deal with you next.” He then swung his head low, nipping underneath the hem of Cece’s dress until she began to pick up her feet and move. He then barked and snarled until he’d chased the irritant back to her residence.
Sophie had already come outside the boutique to meet them by the time he’d chased Cece to the door. “I’m sorry about her, Link. Thank you for not being harsher than you had to.”
Link’s daughter popped out from her father’s mane. “Good night, Miss Sophie!”
“My, you’re out late, Miss Zelda Ivee. Are you helping your dad?”
“Yeah! I help so he go to bed fast!”
“Aww. Are you going home too, Link? You know how your wife gets when you stay out too late.”
“Yeah, heading back to put myself and my princess here to bed. Cece was just causing a disturbance.”
“Be careful with your leg.”
His ears folded over themselves and he smiled a little sheepishly. “Got it, Sophie.”
“I’ll see you tomorrow, Link.”
Link whipped his head around to catch the sneaking-away Reede once Sophie closed her door. “I’m not done with you.” The elder Wolfbred cut off his descendant’s escape route, pressing his upper body down onto Reede’s left shoulder. “Your duty as mayor is to protect the village and its people, not to get shoved around.”
“Grandpa, Cece is technically a native here. Whether or not she’s legally considered a Wolfbred shouldn’t change how the village interacts with her.”
“It doesn’t. Her hostile attitude does. You know, before the Calamity-”
“Grandpa. Stop equating a monarch with an iron fist to a self-regulating settlement in a decayed kingdom. You’re never going to find any peace with your life if you keep expecting us to act like the Hyrule that was.”
“...Walk with me, Reede.” He released Reede’s shoulder and continued his four-legged walk alongside Reede towards the latter’s abode. “You say ‘it’s only one woman, what harm can it do to play along?’ but, it was ‘only one woman’ who created us all millenia ago, ‘only one woman’ who led genocide against us - who murdered us by the thousands as we were chased onto these lands - and ‘only one woman’ who saved us all one hundred and twenty years ago from incest-induced extinction. So tell me, Reede, how can this ‘one woman’ be of no significance?”
“Those women were all magic-”
“They never used their magic to do those things. They used their words. And I didn’t ask you about them, I asked you about her.”
“Link, if you’re so fearful that we’ll end up in exile again… that’s simply not possible. Most Hylians now are descended from Wolfbreds, because Hateno and Lurelin were the only Hylian villages that didn’t burn.”
“I never said she would reenact the exile. I said you have a duty to not get shoved around by brats with big words.”
“Grandpa, Zelda’s trying to figure it out. We’re not asking you to provide us a threat-free life. You did your job, you earned your rest. Let us take up the mantle from here.”
“Prove to me you can carry it, Reede, and then we’ll talk. My sister kept this place going despite the Calamity, despite the Age of Burning Fields, despite everything that happened after me and my father passed away. Prove you’re worthy to inherit her honor.” Link sat abruptly in front of a stone arch. “Your residence.”
Reede sighed, keeping his head bowed. Had a tail been present, it would drag the ground in defeat. “Good night, Grandpa.”
“Good night, Reede. Tell Clavia and Karin I say hello.” He began to walk away as Reede ascended the stairs to his house.
Zelda Ivee looked back at Reede before snuggling Link. “You seem sad, Daddy.”
“I’m okay, pumpkin. Let’s go join Momma in bed, okay?”
“Okay, Daddy.”

Talo (A member of the Elder’s Ring of Hateno)
Quinari (A member of the Elder’s Ring of Hateno)
Pryze (Sir Pryze is one of the Castle's last Wolfbred knights. He is a mentor to Link, and ten years older. Uli is his mother. A throne room guard until the assassination of Queen Zelda, then relocated to Zora’s Domain with the rest of the Wolfbred knights until Link summoned him back as part of Princess Zelda’s personal guard.)
Uli (Cousin of Midna Marie, although she's like a sister to her. What happened to Midna because of how the Sheikah dehumanized their tribe in ages long past makes her very willing to lash out at the Shadow People. Wants nothing to do with Hyrule. In her words, if Link is only a "half-citizen," then the kingdom can only demand half his life for their wars. Pryze is her son.)
Twili (The apothecary of Hateno Village. Mistaken to be Link's mother several times by non-Wolfbred, due to misinterpreting the Wolfbred's affectionate culture (and the fact that Link acts less shy with Wolfbred) to be a family relationship between the two.)
Kokori (A senior (30+) Wolfbred living in Goponga Village. Considers her home among the Zora, serving as an assistant to Goponga’s general store owner. The fourth youngest Wolfbred. Colin is her husband)
Colin (Kokori’s husband and a fisherman in the Lanayru Wetlands)
Sage (Link’s spiritual advisor, teaches and leads him through his Arvador duties and takes them over when he becomes a Champion. Fifty years old, which is considered ancient to the tribe who only lives through their thirties.)

Mezra (A member of the founding Elder’s Ring of Hateno, said to have garnered a personal connection to the Twilight. The Wolfbred’s afterlife beliefs primarily stem from her and Hami)
Hami (Founding ruler of Hateno Village, if you listen closely under the full moon, perhaps you will hear her call. Said to be spirit-bound to a Twili, she heavily influences the Wolfbred’s afterlife beliefs along with Mezra. Often depicted as a ghost-like wolf.)
Poe/Raven (A female Wolfbred with Arvador-type duties. While the Arvador title is unique to Link, this lady is in charge of the spiritual aspects that are most closely mirroring the Arvador: burials of puppies, spiritual work, etc. She maintains all the funeral rites and death tasks for Hateno Village.)
Ranvu (Hami’s husband)
Risoka (A former chamberlain for the Royal Family whose love for caring for and serving others became the basis of Hateno’s communal society)
Callisto
Jia (A member of the founding Elder’s Ring of Hateno, and Hateno’s first historian, transcribing history into song to prevent its loss. Her most notable “song” was a warning given to King Rauru by the Priestess Farore shortly before he died)

Social Makeup Study - Hateno Village (HFS, TotK)
Village Structure
Leadership system: Eldership and a monarchy-like structure both appear to be used at once. An electoral system has become popular with some citizens, and Hyrule's monarchy has begun to restore itself, both further complicating the matter. Traditionally, Hateno used an eldership system exclusively, but Hyrule's sudden destruction 100 years ago brought elements of a monarchy (primarily that there is one leader who inherits the position).
Leader/Ruler: Reede Imperial (leader/mayor, under dispute), Link Hyrule (elder, under dispute, King of Hyrule)
Economy: As a former land of exile, Hateno is traditionally non-exporting. However, the village became known for agriculture and dye production after the Age of Burning Fields. Recently, the village has become a hub for textiles such as clothing and hats. The past century has brought significant changes in this area, which has also brought unease.
Demographics: Historically was 100% Pedigreed Wolfbred, although the modern village has a makeup of approximately 50% Wolfbred/Wolfbred Hybrid and 50% Hylian. This shift was also brought about in the last 100 years.
Beliefs and Afterlife: A Hylia-worshipping village. Wolfbred mythology depicts them having been created by the Twilight's interaction with their ancestor and believe that the Twilight became heritable through his line. Although the Twilight Realm is not an afterlife realm (nor was it intended to be), the Wolfbred still believe their ghosts will be returned to the Realm when their bodies fail because of their own Twilight, and believe that Midna created the Celaeno Orientalis constellation (a wolf-like constellation that appears over Hateno) as a replacement for the Mirror of Twilight to help their souls return "home". Due to the Mirror of Twilight's destruction, there is no way to confirm or deny this belief; however, it appears to have been reinforced by Link's successful command of both Wolfbred-like spirits and Hylia's Honor Guard (souls of past heroes) in battle.
Citizens
Link (Imperial) Hyrule: The last documented male Wolfbred, and the last Wolfbred born under exile. For this reason, he’s referred to as the last “Pedigreed Wolfbred”.  Champion of Hyrule/Hylians, despite not technically being Hylian, and beloved mate of Princess Zelda. Died during the Great Calamity, but not before becoming King of Hyrule. The first Wolfbred King since Kakku. Cause of death: fatal battle wounds. He was resurrected 100 years after his death, and reigns over Hyrule today with his beloved. The Sheikah crowned him King Sovereign before Calamity Ganon was sealed for good, as the throne would pass to whichever of King Rhoam's heirs/relatives was found alive first. Called "Grandpa" (sometimes written "Grandpaw") by his extended family. Has developed blindness in one eye as well as joint pain, two common signs of a Wolfbred's aging, and is technically retired from all soldiering.
Zelda (Esmerelda) Hyrule: The first Hylian to marry into the tribe in 10,000 years due to the exile, and mother of Hyrule's first (chronologically-speaking) Wolfbred-Hylian hybrid: Zelda Ivee. Said to be the only true Hylian who could speak the Wolfbred tongue fluently before the Calamity. The Sheikah's crowning of Link restarted the Kingdom of Hyrule, so this Princess hasn't seen a need to rush her ascension to the Queen's throne. Her temper was found to be of Wolfbred descent, as she is Karu’s descendant. A beloved teacher at the newly build Hateno Schoolhouse.
Zelda Ivee Hyrule: King Link and Princess Zelda’s beloved little girl and the new Princess Zelda. She is the first Wolfbred hybrid since her distant ancestor Karu, and her soul is over a century old despite her age of five. Her upbringing will likely shape the future of Hyrule, as her parents come from such different backgrounds. Current studies regarding her aim to identify whatever might trigger the aggressive tendencies her family tree is infamous for, so her exposure to such triggers can be limited.
Reede Imperial: Leader of Hateno Village and descendant of Sydnei (Link's sister). He retains a strong desire to stay in tune with his heritage and prides himself on keeping Hateno just the way it was during the exile: a safe haven for the Wolfbred. He inherited the antagonistic tendencies of his family. Although he is generally a very peaceful, vegetable-loving man, he has recently begun to display aggressive behavior, and has gotten in a few fights. (Now that the villagers think about it, so has Link.)
Clavia Imperial: Reede's wife and the mother of Karin. Clavia is Hylian, but has been accepted into the Clan as if she was Wolfbred. While her daughter is in school, she spends time at Link and Zelda's, often helping tidy the place so the half-blind Link can keep his last good eye on his pup. Besides, she believes it does Link good to have someone other than Zelda to talk to.
Karin Imperial: Reede and Clavia's daughter, and a pupil of Zelda's. Currently, Karin is not affected by her family's tendencies. Purah aims to prevent exposing both her and Zelda Ivee to whatever causes those tendencies to develop. Although, considering how riled up their fathers have suddenly gotten, Purah and her fellow researchers may have to work fast to identify the cause and isolate it from the girls.
Sophie and Cece: A pair of Wolfbred-Hylian sisters. Cece is eldest. Their existence greatly influences modern Wolfbred-Hylian relations as Sophie is considered legally Wolfbred, while Cece is the first hybrid to not be legally Wolfbred, at least within the village. Surprisingly, Sophie is the more docile of the two. Cece recently moved back in after traveling the world to study fashion. Village opinions are mixed. Link and Sophie are friends. Link and Cece are not.
Ivee: Daughter of the family who runs East Wind General Store. It's rumored that she was actually named after Zelda Ivee, as Hateno thought she'd been killed in-utero during the Great Calamity.
Pruce, Amira and Azu: Family of Ivee, runs East Wind. Ancestor was a dear friend of Ordon, which strengthens the rumors about the origins of Ivee's name. Father, mother and younger brother, respectively. Azu has taken fondly to "protecting" the village, a tendency that often develops in Wolfbred males as they approach and reach puberty.
Tamana: A former Cucco rancher, and Teebo's mother.
Teebo: A very polite Wolfbred pup and Tamana's son. Has shown an immense interest in weapons and the warrior arts since he was very young, and now fills a slot on the day-shift Hateno guard. His apparently innate interest in warrior arts and protection have brought him and Link into a mentor-mentee relationship.
Medda: A tomato-raising farmer, and Aster's father. His wife passed many years ago, but he and his daughter seem to be doing well.
Aster: Medda's daughter. Loves tomatos and froggies, and recently moved next door to Link and Zelda.
Dantz, Koyin: A family of Wolfbred who live outside the town on a farm in the forest, completely devoted to the ways of their ancestors. Father and daughter, respectively.
Sayge, Senna and Sefaro: Family running the Kochi Dye Shop. Sayge and Senna are devoted artisans, who are thriving with Hateno's new textile based market. Sefaro, however, is a much more studious soul who prefers to read history books at the schoolhouse. He's tried to badger Link into teaching him more sensitive history like the Great Calamity, Wolfbred Exile and Sheikah Fallout; currently to little-to-no avail. Perhaps when the little historian is older... or when other tensions in the village smooth over....
Prima: Said to be the prettiest Wolfbred after Midna Marie. May be related to Linky due to the strong facial resemblance to his mother, but is clearly not of the Imperial family.
Worten: Prima's husband. A Wolfbred-Hylian hybrid like his wife, which was seen as a milestone for the species (as hybrids had become distant enough to interbreed again)
Uma: An elderly Wolfbred-Hylian. One of the first hybrids to be born, and has lived since the Age of Burning Fields. Full of knowledge about the village and its history, with a priceless ability to see multiple perspectives for almost any conflict in the village. She usually attempts to soothe Link and Reede when they are riled, often with more success than their wives.

Tears of the Kingdom Headcanons - HFS
Zelda cut her hair before Zelda Ivee was born, sometime during the third trimester. After 100 years, it was already a huge mess and she didn't want to maintain it and a newborn
Link initially struggled with the shorter hair, as he'd grown used to snuggling in her long hair Pre-Calamity. Hence why she cut it at shoulder length, so he could still burrow a little/self-soothe.
Zelda has never found out when Link started going blind, but he told her he was beginning to lose sight around Zelda Ivee's second birthday and was officially blind in the left eye while Zelda Ivee was 4. The causative reason is unknown.
Link's friends (the Sages + Teba) don't know that Link is half blind, because he won't let Zelda tell them. All they know is that he is retired for health-related reasons. They learn about his condition at different times. Riju is last.
Sidon is the first to deduce what kind of ailments might have retired Link, due to the Zora Tavo/Vyrtuka being very close to the members of the Wolfbred tribe (including Link) and knowing of their common ailments
Rauru was surprised with the extended period of time he had to observe Link for before Link seemed "noticeably" blind. He remembered it was one of Zelda's major concerns for him (and why she needed to return to him so soon, on top of his separation anxiety) and so expected him to not seem so normal.
