The Ring. When Noctis puts on the ring for the first time it’s a real struggle for him but the lighting effects are beautiful, until you step back and view them with Ansel. It kinda looks like he’s being circled by four giant false eyelashes! Using the ring’s power might be draining but I love the pink cloud shot with green when Noctis casts Death. I also love how Alterna warps daemons into unusual shapes. This Snaga looks like a turkey but not one that Noctis would eat. The sight of it has turned Noct’s face a sickly green colour in the afterglow. All images copyright Square Enix Co Ltd.

Random DotF musings pt. 1
(spoilers for the whole book)
A Savior Lost - Ardyn:
So I uh totally forgot there was an "animated prologue" to Ep Ardyn. I did watch it...back in 2019. That means between Episode Ardyn, the animated prologue and DotF, his story has been told thrice in three different forms. Huh. (Well it's par the course for FFXV tbh)
It starts off rough tbh, but I like how the author reminds us of Noct's "shaggy hair and wayward nature" in the opening paragraph. Then you realise it's set in chapter 13 so any slight amusement - at Noct's expense - becomes 😭
I've had DA brainrot, so the justice (Somnus) vs. vengeance (Ardyn) themes stood out. In executing his ideals of justice and governance, Somnus corrupts Ardyn's purpose (his calling) and leads him on the path of vengeance... Culminating in Ardyn doing unto Noctis/Somnus what Somnus did him: 1) Somnus slaying Aera before Ardyn vs. Ardyn stabbing Luna in Altissia, and ofc 2) Ardyn vowing to destroy Somnus' entire legacy and lineage (through Noctis), much like how Ardyn's past as the "savior healer and future king" was demolished/buried and how his wondrous future (as king with Aera by his side) was cut short. This all seems v obvious, but it sounds cool to me when framed with DA's concepts of spirits vs demons - i.e. "if you see them as a demon, they'll become demons and reflect your expectations back at you".
Also obv Jesus/Judas parallels
The last line goes hard ✍️🔥🔥🔥
Now, the train has clearly steered off the rails of canon and into new territory
Not a fan of them casting Bahamut as the big bad antagonist (so cliché). Like the way his speech (as an Astral) is formatted though
It's easier for me to accept the Noctis/Somnus and Luna/Aera parallels in 2024 than it was back in 2019. But even more important than those are the Ardyn/Luna parallels, which we can see taking shape in this part.
Verdict: A slog to read, denser than expected, less exciting bc I've experienced Ep Ardyn - and the animated prologue. Certain parts felt more like reading a "dry impassive timeline" than a story. (I still question Aera's judgement in telling Somnus.) But this chapter does set the stage, so I can see why they still included it. And it's worth re-treading for that last scene alone.
The Beginning of the End - Aranea:
There's anti-food promotion for once, too much of it really. (Ew stale popcorn)
We learn a little bit of Niflheim's past state and its decline. Cool
Omg mentions of Aranea's parents!? Do we know more about her parents than Iggy's?? 😂
Wow they have an aerial safety net system in Gralea (for dragoons...?) Also, Gralea 🔄 Garlean empire - yeah the ff devs weren't subtle (it's a FFXIV ref)
Aranea's penchant for nicknames strikes again -> Tiny = Diamond Weapon
I liked seeing more of Aranea's dynamic with Biggs and Wedge and learning a bit about the latter two. Not as much Aranea + Sol in this ch as I'd expected, but that's okay for now.
While not quite as impressive as [ME2 spoiler] Miranda giving her resignation to the Illusive Man, Aranea going "I really can't stand you" to Ardyn, winking, then diving off the edge of Zegnautus Keep is still pretty awesome
The ffxv devs keep trying to make me care about Loqi but it's never worked
BONUS: FFVI ref spotted! (dancing mad) + minor Tenebrae lore drop (they were a tourist trap /jk)
Verdict: Some parts were repetitive ngl BUT this was more engaging than the prev ch bc 1) it's new content, 2) ARANEA!! - however the action scenes would've been more exciting to play through vs. reading. I'm going to sound like a broken record here; I feel robbed we didn't get to play as her (DRG ladies ftw) and see her wink on screen 🥲
#what's brevity? i don't know her#lyna reads dotf#dawn of the future#final fantasy xv#dotf#dotf spoilers#ardyn izunia#aranea highwind#i have too much to say about luna sol and noct - so pt 2 it is

random astrology of ardyn ramble
This is probably not interesting to anyone, but my other hyperfixation is astrology, and I have spent a lot of time thinking about Ardyn's placements.
Okay, I realize Eos is fictional, and that these characters aren't existing in the same solar system as us, which would obviously change everything about their signs and planets. ANYWAY.
Ardyn's birthday is April 30th, which would make him a Taurus sun sign. I think this makes sense, Taureans' can be eccentric, every Taurus sun I know radiates very appealing weirdo vibes, idk why this is, and ALSO if we look at Ardyn's behavior prior to the scourge, he was fairly stubborn, determined to heal everyone (and Taureans, once they start on a path, it is very difficult for them to deviate), despite his relationship with Aera.
I don't THINK we have a canonical birthday for Somnus, but he strikes me more as an Aries (or at least Mars ruled) and a Taurus (as a Venus-ruled sign) is not some warmonger, or making rash decisions to set anyone on fire who even *possibly* has the scourge.
I also like the idea of Ardyn being a Taurus, which is an Earth sign, and trying very hard to cleanse the Earth (or Eos), as it were, of some disease/affliction.
ALSO. If you dive deeper into other astrology placements (for those unfamiliar, we have not only a Sun sign, but a moon sign, a Mercury sign, a Venus sign, etc).
When I first saw Ardyn I was like, bro is a Gemini. He's shady, he's snarky, he more often uses his words (I mean literally like 75% of his dialogue in the game is just him screwing with Noctis mentally while he's in Zegnautus Keep). He resists most physical battles at all opportunities, doesn't want to engage in fighting (though he is obviously the strongest person in all of Eos besides Noctis) and avoids doing so. This to me also speaks to him being a Taurus, stubbornly refusing any kind of fight unless it's the final one, with Noctis (of course, he does fight Ignis in Episode Ignis, but literally during that fight with him in Altissia, if you don't attack him, he WONT attack you. He just saunters around and hordes of Imperials soldiers come down from the Magitek engines to fight you).
ANYWAY. If you are a Taurus sun, Mercury can *only* be in the sign of Aries, Taurus, or Gemini, because Mercury is never more than one sign away from the sun. So I'm saying, Ardyn is a Taurus sun, with a Gemini Mercury (which explains the Gemini nature of his speech patterns). An Aries mercury would be more forceful, impulsive, impatient, but a Gemini is going to give you the snark that we see from Ardyn.
I've also been thinking of this from the standpoint of my fan fiction (Precarious Games) because I have a Reader character, and I decided on their placements before I started it, to determine their essential personality. Reader (in my mind) is a Libra sun, with a Libra mercury, and Scorpio Venus, which would then make her sun Venus-ruled, giving some compatibility with Ardyn's Taurus sun, and then I suspect Ardyn has a Taurus Venus, which would then oppose Reader's Scorpio venus (as Taurus and Scorpio are opposite signs), which explains a lot of their conflicts, but also their attraction (and a scorpio venus is more willing to let a relationship utterly destroy them emotionally, and are even potentially attracted to people who aren't good for them, which gives some explanation for her continuing her relationship with him despite well, everything. and just being a Libra sun/mercury makes them crave partnership and balance, and to ignore conflict)
So yeah. Ardyn, I think, is a Taurus sun, Gemini Mercury, with a Taurus Venus. I don't know what his rising or moon sign would be, I just feel like, with villains, everyone is so quick to be like SCORPIO! So I wanted to give my thoughts. Like I said I realize this is probably interesting to NO ONE lmao but I needed to articulate this somewhere.
I haven't even thought about the Mars sign. Mars (I believe) can be anywhere regardless of where the Sun is, based on it's movement and retrograde period. I think possibly because he is a bit flamboyant, and showy, his Mars makes sense if it was in Leo, which would then square his Sun and Venus (i.e. his motivations, his drive are at odds with his sense of self/identity, and ability to relate to others).
I could also see him being a Leo rising, to give more emphasis on this showmanship vibe he has, and that would place Mars in the 1st house, and Sun/Venus in the 10th in Taurus (which is the area of your life purpose, your public facing self). Also, a lot of planets on the angular houses (1st, 10th) give someone a lot of strength in their personality, they are able to succeed (and let's not discount his success in Gralea, which he achieved not from Bahamut's intervention, but from his will alone, really).
But yeah! Astrology is fun when you apply it to fictional characters, for me it helps me understand their personalities better, especially when writing fan fiction, and it's nice to at least have a canon birthday (day and month at least) to go on.

So I finished FFXV ages ago, but I've been thinking about it lately bc you know, I elaborated the chocobros' story far further than it was meant to go and got way more attached to them than I should have. So here're some things that the game did really well and some of the things it didn't. (you don't have to agree w anything here; I'm not trying to corrupt y'all w my opinions; I just feel like talking)
Let's start with the bad to get it out of the way:
CINDY. I swear to everything holy her character had the potential to be So Cool if she hadn't been so overtly over-sexualized. Like, I'm a woman-liker too and I get it, lady mechanics are hot af, but you know what else is attractive? Safety in the workplace. Cindy's outfit was not something any mechanic would be caught dead wearing. Yeah, it was designed to be sexy, but do you know how many burns she would've accumulated from the hot oil and metal she works with? There's a reason mechanics typically wear clothing zipped up when they're actually working on something. If anything, Cindy's character design just made me uncomfortable. Her character itself? Great. No qualms there. Her design? Please acquire more than two square feet of fabric I'm begging you. I just feel like Cindy deserved to be so much more than fan service.
Luna's brief time on-screen. Yet another potentially incredible and deep female protagonist who got short change from this game. People joke a lot that Luna wasn't at all an important character because the game never really treated her like one. She was MEANT to be important, clearly, but it felt like she existed just for her tearjerking death scene? Like there was SO MUCH overlooked potential to bring her into the storyline as more than Tragic Love Interest In White, and yet?? Idk it frustrated me.
The emotional aspect of the game felt rushed. There were a lot of emotional scenes covered throughout the plotline ranging from King Regis's death to the deal with Prompto at Zegnautus Keep. I feel like the game TRIED to cover them realistically and show the characters' grief, but it didn't quite get there. It was just sort of an "Oh, how sad. I'm so upset and angry. Hm, what's that? My friends believe in me without truly understanding and I can kill someone to ease my pain? Oh okay I'm better now." I get that realistic healing cycles are kinda hard to portray within a set timeframe, but having some lingering effects of the blatant trauma inflicted would've been nice. You don't recover from shit like that in a week's time.
Character personalities tended to be one-sided. Noctis was edgy, Prompto was happy-go-lucky, Gladio was tough-guy, and Ignis was... nevermind, Iggy was great--- HE had some on-screen depth. Personally, I've developed these characters myself far more than what the game gave us, but I wish we'd gotten more canon depth beyond their surface-level traits. I love them with my whole heart and they deserve genuine complexity.
Now the things I actually really enjoyed:
The graphics were on-point. The amount of detail put into character design and into monsters was insane. You could zoom in and see individual textures on skin and hair and feathers, bringing a level of realism to the game that I personally enjoyed.
All of the Latin and Norse mythological references!! As a Latin nerd, I found little gems everywhere in this game. Esp in the names--- (Noctis Lucis Caelum = Of-the-night Sky-of-light (the genitives in there make the literal translation kinda a mouthful ik) Gladiolus Amicitia = Sword-flower Friendship (the gladiolus is an actual flower that gets its name from the Latin word gladius, meaning sword, for its sword-like shape) Ignis Scientia = Fire Knowledge; Prompto Argentum = Ready Silver (the word prompto is actually in the dative (possibly ablative), making the literal translation nonsense, but if they'd made his name Promptus, it would've sounded awkward, so I can see why they picked the dative/ablative form of the adjective for stylistic reasons and I put the rough translation instead)) WOW THAT WAS A LOT OF PARENTHETICAL INFO WHOOPS
Ardyn's character. I'm not saying this bc I'm one of the fans who fawn over him---Ardyn is DEFINITELY NOT MY PREFERRED FLAVOR OF MAN, but character-wise, he made an excellent antagonist. He was witty, slick, and classy in an I'm-gonna-outstep-you-like-it's-hopscotch sorta way. He was a poetic villain done well, which made him an antagonist you could both sympathize for and absolutely detest given the situation. He was both the master manipulator and the pawn one space away from the edge of the board. He can sway a crowd, but you know deep in your gut just by the cunning greed in his eyes that You Cannot Trust The Man. He was definitely Not a good person (tragic backstory isn't an excuse), but he was a good villain.
I loved the bond between the chocobros?? This is probably bc I'm a sucker for the found family trope, but their interactions were so amazing to me?? Like, not even the cutscene stuff. Just their little sidebar conversations during fights or while you're walking around or driving the Regalia. They're Roadtrip Buddies™ and I think that's excellent.
THE FOOD. By god, the food in this game looked absolutely scrumptious and I would like to partake. The Daggerquill Soup? Give it to me I'll pay you. The Creamy Crustacean Omelet? Stop it right now I'll eat that so fast it'll be a criminal offense. Like I know I touched on the graphics earlier, but broski I was not kidding. I guess I know why the game took so long to make it to the market bc the detail that went into these recipes is absolutely mouthwatering.
#prompto#noctis#ff15#noctis lucis caelum#gladiolus amicitia#ignis scientia#ffxv#prompto argentum#ardyn lucis caelum#critique#fr this is just me talking to talk#you don't have to agree w anything here#there are more flaws than I listed for sure but I didn't feel like ripping the game to shreds

Gralea, as you've never seen it before. In daylight! Thanks to Rinual's Menu Mod, you can change the weather and time of day so I replayed Chapter 13 and explored the imperial city in glorious sunshine. I love the combination of building styles, residential, commercial and industrial, and I love how the different levels intersect. The fact that Noctis can walk on some of the pavements suggests there may have been plans to make the area playable but sadly we never got the chance. Zegnautus keep looks slightly less imposing in the daytime and quite pretty at dusk as the lights come on. The daemons flying through the sky are quite worrisome though! And if you ever wondered what is at the bottom of the crater, I'm afraid I can't tell you. The supports disappear into the mist and if Noctis follows them it triggers the GAME OVER screen. The Choice is Yours
Zegnautus Keep is a cold, cruel place of horrors running amok. Yet, it is here that the party have been led -- where they will find that which they seek. Though separated in the beginning, they have since reunited, much to the joy they could spare for it. While the Crystal is indeed a priority, all have agreed that the best thing to have done was find Prompto first.
Word Count: 1,861
Notes: More or less a preliminary to the rewrite I have in mind for my project at large. Has spoilers for Chapter 13. Bound to be tweaked and fixed in the future for whenever I get around to it in my main writing endeavors for this project. Also, it's largely Primam- and Prompto-focused, so likely going to work on having less bias in the future pending.
Mechanical whirrs filled the air as Noctis hurriedly pressed buttons on the console to free Prompto from the device he had been made prisoner of. All the while, Primam had been near the device that held him, her hands held out in futile effort to concentrate her ice magics to at least soothe the swelling. With the magic nullifier that shrouded the area, however, Primam could only curse as she stayed close, soft ‘I’m sorry’s falling from her lips as she and Ros could do nothing to ease his pain.
When finally the cuffs retracted with a harsh electronic buzz and freed Prompto, he would have fallen to the cold metal ground had Primam not immediately hurried in and buckled with him to break his fall. Her arms were loosely acting as braces for him as Prompto hesitantly sat back after righting himself, uttering a pained “... Sorry…” to her.
Of course, there was plenty of concern from everyone else to go around.
“Hey--You alright?” Gladio stepped forward.
“Are you hurt? Do you need help?” Ignis leaned down, his hand starting to reach out with some trepidation despite not being able to see.
“Give him room to breathe…” Ros said, already digging in his belongings for a potion, or anything that could have at least taken the edge off.
“I-I’m fine.” Prompto breathed, biting back on his gasps of pain that so wanted to come out. Primam could feel him shudder under her touch, her expression of worry and concern ever lingering as she watched him and kept a hand on him.
“Thank you, Noct…” Prompto slowly looked over toward Prim as well as he adjusted to sitting on his knees. “And you, too… Prim… Everyone…”
There was a silence that fell as Prompto looked down at his hands in his lap, his brow furrowing and lips pursing. Much and more was on his mind as his eyes darted from his hands to his knees.
To the floor.
To what he could see of Primam.
To Noctis’ boots.
Then back to his hands.
“Tell me…” Prompto finally managed, voice still trembling with the emotional turmoil he had been tortured by still yet. He looked up at everyone, that pain of something far deeper than that of physical discomfort evident in his expression. “Were you guys worried about me?”
“Of course we were,” Noctis replied without hesitation. His tone was surprisingly gentle considering everything from before that weighed on him. “What kind of question is that?”
For a moment, Prompto’s lips parted, and he looked at everyone who was there, standing around him. Childhood friends, and friends made along the way as Prompto spent more and more time with Noctis and the Arms of the King from their schooldays onward. They were there for him…
At least, that was what was said. The nagging feeling at the back of Prompto’s mind still ate away at him.
“‘Of course…’” Prompto repeated, whispering the words as the emotions threatened to break the dam that prevented the tears from welling in his eyes. He looked to Prim and offered her a nod to signal that he was fine before starting to push himself up into a standing position. Though Primam slowly removed herself, she stayed close, just in case.
“I need to hear you say it,” Prompto said, not making eye contact with Noctis for a moment.
An uneasy tension formed.
“I’m…I’m sorry, Prompto,” Noctis replied, thinking that was all there was to it.
Prompto shook his head. “I-I need you to…”
He clenched both fist and jaw for a moment, steeling himself. “I need you to tell me that I’m not a fake -- that I’m the real me.” His voice grew quiet as he then begged, “Please.”
Noctis’ expression changed, mouth falling open only slightly before he closed it and furrowed his brow. He was disappointed with himself most of all for what had happened. He looked in Primam’s direction, who seemed to have already been shooting him a nasty look… Aside from very nearly throwing their train off course, he could not blame her for what she tried to prevent.
“I--we--wouldn’t come all this way for a fake, Prompto,” Noctis slowly replied. His words were haphazard at best -- then again, Noctis never really was the best at arranging his vocabulary well. “I’m sorry… Sorry that I caused this mess for you…”
“We should…all apologize…” Gladio spoke up, rubbing the back of his neck. “Tensions were high at the time, and…none of us were acting right. Especially not when Ardyn showed up and made fools outta all of us.”
Nearing, Gladio then clapped a hand to Primam’s shoulder and shook her lightly in a friendly manner. “I already know Prim’s not going to admit it, but she tried to stop Noct. She saw right through Ardyn’s illusion magic on the train.”
“... Yeah, that…” Noctis began in response, the disappointment within himself welling further as he recalled the events. His arm was still wrapped in a bandage from where her ice shards cut into him from her fury as a result of his brash actions. “That was a thing that happened…”
Prompto looked at Primam, surprise softening his expression only somewhat. He watched her as she pursed her lips and looked away. After hearing what Gladio said -- and while he was desperate to hear anyone say it -- he now wanted to hear her say it. To validate him. To reassure him.
“A-And now? Can…can you see me? The real me?”
Primam slowly turned her head back toward Prompto, bangs falling over her face somewhat. Her eyes searched his for a moment, and she gave a slow nod. “I’ve…I’ve always been able to see you, Prompto… M-Maybe…not the parts of you that you hide… But I can see you. I see you now. You’re real… I…I know you are.”
The dam broke, and Prompto brought the back of his hand up to his eyes to wipe away the tears that formed before staggering forward and throwing his arms around Primam. She had actually said the words he wanted to hear. The words he needed to hear.
All the while, Primam could feel how his arms and body shook. It broke her heart, creating this painful pit within her chest as she wrapped her arms around Prompto in kind with no amount of hesitation.
The feeling of Primam’s arms around him was more than enough to break the dam completely as Prompto sank into her. He buckled again, pulling her to the ground with him. His breath hitched and he buried his head into her shoulder, holding her close as he choked back those sobs he had been holding in this entire time. All the pain was finally coming out, and Primam, in that moment, was a lifeline keeping all of him as together as possible.
Noctis wanted to say something. Something that could have reassured Prompto further. However, any plan that he could have thought of was thwarted as Ignis softly spoke up: “It sounds as though we should give them some space.”
There was quiet agreement between everyone as just about everyone shuffled out of the room. Ros was the only one who lingered longer than the others. Glancing behind him for a moment, he approached the two, a vial of green liquid in his hand. Primam took notice of Ros, turning her attention up at him. When Ros handed her the vial, she loosened one hand to take hold of it.
Once it was passed off, Ros took his leave, not wanting to make the situation awkward for them.
Softly, Primam spoke to Prompto, “Hey… Ros brought a potion for you. Whenever you’re ready, I can administer it…”
Prompto took in a shuddered breath and nodded. It took a couple moments for him to find his voice, but when he did, he finally said in that quiet tone: “Do it.”
Bringing her thumb over the stainless-steel button, Primam took in a breath, holding it, and closed her eyes. She clicked it, and the vial sprayed its green healing mist into the air around them. Whatever hit her exposed skin tingled with warmth.
Prompto, on the other hand, lifted his head, tilting it upward and breathing in the mist as he and Primam sat there in each other’s hold. What warmth Primam felt was a more full body experience for Prompto as the sensation ran from his nose down to his fingertips and toes. His aches and pains started to subside, little by little, as he experienced this brief high. It was enough for him, as he soon returned his forehead to Primam’s shoulder.
Once the potion ran its course, Primam let it go. She let her breath go, listening as the spent vial clinked across the floor before she returned her full embrace to Prompto. As long as he needed it, she would be there.
“Can…I ask you a question?” Prompto spoke after several more moments of silence.
“Anything.”
“... Why have you always been nice to me?” Prompto asked, his question searching for…something.
Primam’s expression softened, and she leaned her chin on Prompto’s shoulder, rubbing a hand along his back as a form of comfort.
“Because you’ve always been nice to me… Why would I want to be anything other than kind to you in turn when all you’ve ever shown me was kindness?” Primam gently replied, sincere with her words.
Another part of her heart broke at that moment. She wanted to tell him so many little things that weighed on her mind. But…she kept the rest of her heart hidden away, simply choosing to close her eyes and allow the moment to linger as long as necessary.
“You should hate me…” Prompto choked. Despite his words, his hold on Primam tightened. “You should all hate me.”
Primam reaffirmed her hold on Prompto, nestling her head in the crook between his neck and shoulder. “I don’t have a reason to hate you. I have every reason to love you for everything you’ve ever done for me.”
“Even if I’m the enemy?” Prompto’s voice was barely a whisper. He spoke like he wanted the faint mechanical hum of the very building to drown out his voice.
Silence lingered in the air between them. Primam tried to piece together what Prompto meant by that. Instead of pulling away, she sighed and remained. When she finally had the words, she continued to speak in her gentle manner: “If you’re the enemy, then you have me in quite the vulnerable spot, don’t you think? I would be a fool to trust you like this…and yet, I feel no knife at my back. If you’re the enemy, then prove it.”
Prompto’s breath stuttered again, and he curled his face back into Primam’s shoulder.
“... No… Don’t make me…”
“The choice is yours.”
A moment passed, and Prompto withdrew his head from Primam’s tear-stained jacket. He looked at her, eyes red. Yet, there was this look of realization on his face that was a result of her words.
The choice is yours.
“... Thank you…” Prompto said, another stuttered breath drawn as he closed his eyes and pressed his forehead against Primam’s.

Your OCs are so awesome! Thanks for explaining their backstories in my first ask, I eat that stuff up! I'm also a part of the oc x canon crowd too!
My FFXV OC is named Penna Calamum, translated to "feather pen" in Latin. She's a member of the Hunters, but is forbidden from going on any missions because she was infected by the Starscourge as a child, and has daemon powers she struggles to control. She's learned how to make potions and salves and chart maps and the stars, eventually joining the Chocobros as their Scholar/Healer. She has an intense grudge against the Lucians for ignoring the daemon plight faced by the citizens living outside Insomnia's walls, but she gradually unlearns her prejudices and bonds with the boys, eventually falling for Prompto :)
OH LET'S GO!!! FELLOW OC X CANON ENJOYER 🤝
Ouuu I love a good starscourge angst FANTASTIC. Funnily enough that was the original idea for Fidei until I swapped it out for a magic necklace that heals him (i had to be nice to him at least once there was too much angst LOL).
I'm really curious does your plotline follow the game's? If so how does the Zegnautus Keep chapter change with her in it? Does she help free Prompto? :0
Penna beloved, ty for sharing her with me!!!
