I agree with you 100%, but also even a purely literal reading of The Metamorphosis very clearly communicates the horror and tragedy of how quickly people can detach from, dehumanize, and demonize things that they personally don't like, can't relate to/understand, or just otherwise deem Unpleasant.

EVEN IF YOU INTERPRET IT AS A GUY LITERALLY TRANSFORMING INTO A LITERAL BUG, that core theme remains totally unchanged. The reason English teachers + professors love it is because it is such an incredibly strong but simple core theme that it in fact CANNOT be "so open to interpretation that it could literally mean just about anything" to any good faith reader, but still supports a wide variety of complex deeper meanings, allusions, and parallels (such as the metaphor for disability, the inherently dehumanizing nature of capitalistic social values, the tragedy and horror and shame attached to the loss of one's ability to fulfill their own most basic needs and function independently [this of course ties strongly into the metaphor for disability/illness], the narrative's deliberate perversion of the more standard [and generally positive] caterpillar-into-butterfly transformation, dear God I fucking love analyzing this story, I could go on forever).

I really cannot relate to people who consume media in the way that that Goodreads user does because with something like The Metamorphosis, you don't actually have to be a skilled close reader, all you have to do is put yourself in Gregor's shoes. Imagine that you woke up in the body of a human-sized bug but in every other way were still you, except you could no longer communicate and you could no longer follow even the most basic routines/desires you'd dedicated your whole life to and you could no longer function on any level as an independent being, and everyone you loved and valued and worked so hard/sacrificed so much of yourself for took one look at you and went, "Ew! Gross! You should just kill yourself tbh because having to acknowledge that you exist as you now are makes us uncomfortable and your whole existence is now a burden to us."

It is absolutely unfathomable to me how anyone could read it and just go, "What a pointless and unnecessarily depressing story about some lame dude randomly turning into an icky bug and then dying."

I saw some people on TikTok and on the main sub talking about how it is "crazy for Cait and Vi to hook up in the jail cell" and how "Vi should be going after her sister" so I wanna make sure we all understand the convo beforehand and why it makes sense that it would lead to sex lmao

We find Vi in this scene metaphorically (and literally, in a jail cell) where she was in act 2 of season 1: alone, feeling like she has lost all her family, and still feeling like she failed her sister, which is where Caitlyn and her first met. Given the wishy-washy terms that were left on during their last scene together, Vi is prepared for Caitlyn to tell her "I told you so", which Vi verbally expresses to Cait. But, Caitlyn does not tell her that, she tells her that she is the one who made it so Vi could free Jinx by moving the guards since she knows Vi well enough that obviously Vi was gonna go to her sister.

Vi reacts to this so passionately for two reasons: One, she is no longer alone. Caitlyn is saying "I'm still on your side" and more importantly "I've moved on, my love for you is stronger than my hate for your sister", which prompts such an enthusiastic response from Vi. Two, Vi is lifted of one of the biggest burdens she has dealt with during the series, which is the unique love triangle between Vi, Jinx, and Caitlyn. Vi no longer feels like she has to choose between them. Jinx verbally tells Vi "you should be with her" and Caitlyn admits to facilitating Jinx's release.

So naturally, Vi stops holding herself back, it's why she doesn't give a fuck when Caitlyn admits to sleeping with Maddie. Vi indulges herself and her desires for the first time in the series, no longer burdened by this internal conflict. Like, no wonder Vi was "feeling fantastic"...

Also, on the topic of "Vi should be going after her sister", the show establishes Vi as someone who does not go after people who leave her. Vi is someone who lives for others, and so she respects their decisions even if they hurt her. She is not someone who goes where she feels she is not wanted. Vi didn't go back to Caitlyn after episode 3 of season 2, she's not gonna go after Jinx either, it's who Vi is.

Metaphors CAN exist alongside real literal meaning, in the example above their poor mental state IS as real as the squalor the person lives in that can have actual significants in the story beyond its metaphor or it equally doesn't need to (depending on the story your telling it may never come up again)

Relationships while can be generally understood are still ephemeral immaterial an abstract things meaning symbolizing them with physical stand in can make a good metaphor like fusion

Since I'm teaching here might as well say for anyone who don't know, similies are their own thing, done for description most often in text because unless you have narration or two characters yapping in a show/movie slipping in similies can be difficult (in my opinion)

Foil, a Foil? A character who contrasts the protagonist/other character in not just the straightforward sense but in themes and or motifs?

HEAR ME OUT PEOPLE: "Show Within a Show" is usually the moment where I go batshit insane. Life imitates art, and art imitates life, and the show within a show is USUALLY where the author sticks in a very nice metaphor or symbol or another instance of a motif that from a literary analysis perspective is Awesome. Plot-wise, it can also be very fun. Think of anime protagonists putting on a play for their school festival! That counts! Think of Hamlet putting on "The Murder of Gonzago" to trigger his Uncle into basically confessing his guilt! Think of literally the entirety of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead! Show Within a Show is where you get to do some serious digging, some serious analysis, or you just get to watch performers performing performance. It also adds depth and new dimensions to characters that can just seem...tired. The "Itchy and Scratchy Show" and everything about Krusty the Klown from the Simpsons fits into this category. Krusty is a fucking MESS but you need the show within a show to explain why; otherwise, he's just a boring sad clown. Sometimes it's integral to the plot; sometimes it's just fun. It's a jack-of-all-trades kind of trope. Other examples of a Show Within a Show: The Goes Wrong Show, with its entire premise being that it is a show within a show. Pyramus and Thisbe from Midsummer Night's Dream. Singing in the Rain. Cabaret. Galaxy Quest. I Saw The TV Glow. I could name more examples, but I think I've proved my point.

That is not what that version of the haka translates as, which is an amazing mistake to make because it's the most well known haka of all time, and that is the version everyone performs. It's like how calling someone a fucker isn't literally insulting their sexual proclivities. How do you feel about coalition politicians saying they'd like to blow up the ministry for pacific peoples or calling others "stupid bitch" in parliament? Or can we not take things literally when it's people you like?

This haka is about a man who fled people trying to murder him through the help of his allies and then emerged into the light. The main chorus is "I will not die, I will live!" (Or, literally, "I die! I die! I live! I live!"). Therefore, it is an effective haka both for sports events or political threats, because metaphors exist. If you did this haka in a war you would not be threatening the enemy but asserting your own strength and survival because /that's what the fucking words translate as/.

Also, stolen valor doesn't exist in Māoritanga. Even if it did it would not apply to a haka like this because this haka, as with most haka, is not only for warriors.

As for the bill- it is not an "equal rights" bill. It redefines the treaty so Maori have none of the rights from the treaty /they and the government signed/, and ensures that the government do not have to make any sort of reparations for breaking those. It is not removing "racial privileges" because Maori don't have any. This specific post that Seymour made is referencing a conference that was being about this bill where, during her turn to speak, Hana Rawhiti began a haka which was then joined in on by many of the other people in attendance. David Seymour, one of the main proponents of this bill then posted that on his party's official Instagram page trying to paint Hana as an uncivilized thug. This is a common tactic for racists and seeing an acting member of parliament openly say something like this makes me feel genuinely sick to my stomach.

I feel like Nightmare is a bit too selfish to cast aside someone he desires because of theological disagreements. Truthfully, a lot of it is because he doesn't care what you think. That being said, he's also partial to other religions— er, namely ones that are very strict or have virtuous tenants you adhere to because he has a massive, massive "religion" kink. That's a sex thing though. The God literally doesn't matter. He just wants to, for example, choke you with a rosary while you beg for your God to save you as he rails you from behind so hard it hurts. That's actually very tame and you'll be lucky if that's all that happens, and it will only be because he busts too early in his unhinged excitement.

Mischaracterization in the CCCC fandom: a yapsesh (alternative title: Erm... What the Gore is Going On?)

So. One thing I've noticed in the CCCC fandom is this weird fixation on gore, torture, violence, etc. Usually a level of graphic content that makes your average horror flick look... pretty tame!

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy horror! I even think a horror story based around psychological conflict similar to CCCC could work well!

But is it just me, or has this fandom COMPLETELY lost track of what the characters are like in the source material?

Like. Let's be real. Nowhere in the album does Soul do gruesome surgeries on Mind, nowhere does Mind go ripping people to shreds like Doomguy, et cetera. The closest thing we have to an implication of violence is what most of us call the "Juno incident"- as even "tines stabbed through eyes" is clearly a metaphor with the next line: "that the sides have condemned."

I feel the biggest victim of this mischaracterization is Soul. In the album he's... kind of a victim, really. He toughs out being dismissed and fought over and pushed aside and outright dehumanized for so, so long. Are we seriously just... going to characterize him based solely on his lowest point in TSE? Spring and a Storm and Mucka Blucka are also songs where he's present- along with his presence in Just Apathy that the fandom seems to outright deny to keep their characterization of him as some violent, abusive monster. (Which, again, is quite literally never alluded to! He's honestly kind of a victim, if anything!)

Ohhkay. Next topic. Mind. Oh boy I have thoughts on how people characterize Mind.

He's not emotionless. If you believe this, you've fallen for his stoic facade. All of his songs are just. So full of so much rage. Maybe even a little bit of grief and sadness and fear, masked by said rage. He isn't some emotionless robot- (Heart calls him an automaton as an insult, but that's another rant.) and honestly it feels like such a disservice to such an interesting character with so much unexplored depth to portray him as such.

Heart. Oh boy. Where do I start. Heart what did they do to you.

Heart is the emotional side, yes, but that isn't just some... smol innocent uwu baby who cries all the time. Emotions aren't small and cute and timid. They're INTENSE and PASSIONATE and EXHAUSTING. Strong emotions leave you so, so drained, good OR bad. This is so much more interesting than portraying him as some "uwu hai dere!!" type of character. Which is nowhere in the album.

Whole is hardly even a character. Soul worshipping and praying to whole is fanon.

This fandom's weird obsession with creating shock gore and one-upping each other in a violence competition has spiraled pretty far out of control, and it's honestly crazy. How do you go from an album about internal conflict to violence that would make even the cast of Resident Evil cringe? Brah.

Final notes uhhh. Soul is a victim who got pushed to his limit, not an evil heartless abuser. Mind is angry and unstable and hurt, not some emotionless robot. Heart is the entire emotional spectrum, not some innocent baby. Ok i . I think that's all. Have a good one

A kid I know of had this happen with his hockey team, apparently there was some trans kid mentally deranged parent in one of the leagues so they all had to do sensitivity training for children. They came in and talked about changing genders using crayons in their metaphor and the kids thought they were saying they were going to turn into crayons and that it was just a stupid joke they were telling.

Same thing happens with the Ontario sex ed curriculum that starts in grade 1 and was written by a convicted pedophile.
