One thing that has deeply annoyed me about the response from Americans/Westerners about this week's events in Korea is that a lot of them, including people I like and respect, are like, "The protesting civilians and lawmakers who barged into the National Assembly would've been shot if this were the U.S./this would've never happened in the U.S. because people are too afraid of being shot." There's some truth to that, at least with regard to state violence, but I'm fed up because it doesn't account for how frightening this could have turned out to be had it not been for how much of an inept flop dunce Yoon Sukyeol is. It minimizes the courage of those who showed up.

Sure, it was likely that the military and riot police wouldn't have done much (again, YSY's self-coup wasn't thought out well, and there's more evidence of that as military officials and soldiers are speaking up about the lack of information they received, but I'll refrain from talking about that to avoid making this even longer than it inevitably will be, knowing myself), but let's not pretend there haven't been issues with them in recent years. They pepper sprayed and used water cannons during an anniversary rally for the Sewol ferry victims (x) (x) (if you don't understand how unbelievably cruel that is, look into the horrific Sewol ferry sinking). They tear gassed crowds (Korea has a gruesome history of this) and sprayed water cannons, and citizens have been injured and killed during the 2015 protests and 2016-17 Park Geunhye impeachment protests, notably Baek Namgi, an elderly activist whose death caused global outrage (x) (x). Park Geunhye was going to enforce martial law during those protests according to a leaked document, with hundreds of tanks, thousands of soldiers and special force troops! (x)

Not to mention, there are decades of extreme state violence that have scarred an entire country and are still super fresh for a huge percentage of the population. Again, check out that tear gas history piece. Look up the April Revolution, Gwangju massacre, and June uprising and see just how bloody they were. Thousands of civilians were tortured and killed. Look at how many protests were going on year after year during the 1980s. That isn't that long ago! All those older people who ran to the National Assembly to stop the coup? You bet a lot of them were college students who protested during that time or knew people who did. All the younger people? They may not have experienced what it was like living under martial law, but as I said, state violence still occurs, however much it's dwindled over the years, and you have to account for generational trauma. I don't think I'll ever forget the way I felt when I saw the breaking news alert about the martial law declaration on December 3. I've never experienced that, at least to that degree.

Instead of viewing the response from civilians and elected officials through the framework of police brutality in the U.S., it should be contextualized using Korea's own history. Thankfully most of the serious discussions are doing this, but like I said, even people who are smart about reading up on things have reflected on how this wouldn't fly in the U.S., not because of the difference in protest history, civil movements, and public engagement with both in the two countries but because of the military/police response. There's an insinuation there that Koreans would be more reluctant to do what they did if they knew what it's like to live in fear of violence instead of living in such a safe country like Korea...and I want to yell.

It was monumentally brave of everyone to do what they did to stop the coup. We're all laughing at how stupid the coup was and there's a reason why people were more furious than scared because of the political history of Korea and the laws set in place to protect the democracy and neutralize coup attempts, but this could have easily become a disaster. It's not alarmist of me to say so because there was no way for anyone to be 100% sure of how the military would react—especially when no one knew what the hell was going on.

Muireann burst into the doors, her eyes darted around the room for the tell tale blue of the turncoat Crystal Braves before she lowered her grimoire. Her carbuncle bounded out of its hiding place in her winter robe, weaving between her legs as she approached Haurchefant’s desk. There was something off about her. Her breath too quick, her eyes too frantic, and a tremor in her entire body that was different to the shaking when the chill cut through her.

“Muireann, my dear, whatever happened?”

“B-bad. I’ was too m-mu-uch.”

“Let’s get you somewhere warmer.” He quickly ushered her into the antechamber excusing the guard inside the door.

“Now then, let’s get this damp coat off you so you can – ” Haurchefant stopped easing the coat from her shoulders when he saw the dim purple-white light coming from her back. The delicate fractal wings had snaked their way up over her shoulders and partway up her neck, crackling levin still dancing under her skin.

“Muireann…should I be concerned that you’re glowing?” Haurchefant’s tone was measured, not entirely devoid of his usual cheery tone but there was a stiffness to it.

“’s Ram-mu-muh. I couldn’t – he’s next on the list. But I couldn’t sum-um-mon an egi. We had everything right! I even snuck into the Sylphlands to make sure I had the requisite aether before heading to Mor-r Dhona…it’s never…it’s never not worked before. I did everything right!”

Her voice was stopping and starting with the pulses of levin under her skin – he could feel it under his fingertips – just how much lightning aether had she taken in that it was affecting her this badly even after expelling some of it? He was suddenly very relieved that she had maintained composure until they were alone – with her battle against Shiva well known, it would not do to have her seen to be open to manipulation of any sort by the primals she had slain.

It was proving difficult to secure the requisite paperwork for the four remaining Scions with the accusations of regicide. If one of their biggest claims in their favour were to be twisted into an accusation of heresy? Haurchefant squeezed Muireann close against his chest. It would not do to think of it.

She latched onto him, taking steadying breaths to bring her vibrating body back fully under her control, “I did everything right…and it still didn’t work. If I can’t do this, Haurchefant, what if – ”

He gently cut her worries short by cupping her face in his hands. He could feel the crackle of levin at his fingertips even through the leather of his gauntlets.

“My dear, I have every confidence that you will find the solutions – as you have always done. And with such staunch allies as these researchers you’ve described I pity any who would cross you once you have resolved your current predicament.”

“If the Archbishop doesn’t hurry up and stamp or sign whatever papers are outstanding he just might jump to the top of the list.”

“That, my darling, is the exact kind of rumour-starting threat that could delay this whole ordeal even further. Much as I would not object to you staying here longer for entirely selfish reasons, it is much safer in Ishgard proper.” Haurchefant punctuated the sentence by gently kissing her forehead.

“I don’t do threats, dear, only promises.”

This might be a funny question but how long do you spend thinking about your characters or your story? I want to start a sims story but I’m always scared because I don’t know how much thought must go into it

im autistic as shit so this might not be the best question to ask me specifically haaaaaaaaah bc i think about my sims 24/7 ;-; standstill in particularly took me so long to debut to simblr, bc ive spent years writing out all the scenes before i executed them into ts4, writing out brainstorms, reading books, doing as much as i can in preparation for my silly vladislaus straud fanfiction. whether it's good is debatable 🤷‍♂��� but i know i did the best that i could do with the skills under my belt and that's enough for me. and to be honest, all that stuff i described is the fun part for me. i've been storytelling since i was a child so the process of creating a story from start to end is genuinely very fulfilling. what you find scary is the thing i enjoy most about the process, so im a bit biased saying all this.

buuuuuuut with all that being said, u do not have to make a sim story in this way!! actually as far as i know this isn't the typical way that most sim stories are created. it's pretty common for people to have a vague idea with their creation, maybe a handful of scenes but not everything written out, who then essentially wing it and write the scenes as they are posted to simblr. 5 years ago i posted the first version of standstill, called thanatophobia, and that story was almost entirely written as i went. so don't feel like you have to elaborately plan everything out if that's not something you enjoy doing! put the level of planning into your story that you feel comfortable with, set your own standards, don't really worry how other people do their stories. like you aren't publishing a book here, this is sims 4 tumblr, it doesn't need to be perfect, it just needs to be something u enjoyed creating.
