Meeting the family

[Jaime Reyes X GN!Reader]

[Notes: More of the bug, spectacular. I only know his family from the Blue Beetle movie, which was so good, so we’re basing them off that, except his dad isn’t dead because I said so. Enjoy!]

The sun was out, shining brightly above Jaime as he sat in the park bench, waiting for his partner to return as they’d gone off to get the two of them slushies from a nearby food truck, but his mind was plagued by thoughts, mainly of his mothers pestering as of late, she’s been wanting to meet his partner since even before he asked them out, which was always a flustering thing to think about, not too mention how nerve wracking it is to introduce your lover to your family, especially when you’ve only been dating for a few months.

His mother probably wouldn’t stop asking though, so here he was with the dilemma of having to choose between letting his family meet them or to continue with his mother’s questions.

Jaime had his attention snapped back to reality when they walked back over to him, handing him a blue slushy with a smug smile before they sat down next to him, leaning against his side as they took a sip of their own slushy.

“Seriously?” Jaime chuckles as he had immediately noticed the tease with the blue slushy, knowing they got him this one because of his hero identity, but he doesn’t mind, he likes this flavor too. “Thanks…” He shook his head as he took his own sip of his slushy, but his mind couldn’t escape his thoughts of his family meeting them.

They huddle together, their head resting on his shoulders while they enjoy the sunny weather and their slushies, watching the people go about their day through the park, a few children and dogs running around the park. Yet, Jaime couldn’t focus much, not with how his mind was racing, he knows they’ll eventually have to meet his family, he can’t exactly hide them forever, and he definitely can’t keep coming up with half assed excuses.

“Uh…hey, babe?” Jaime looked down at the blue slushy in his hands, his heart was racing in his chest as they looked up at him from his shoulder. “My family…they want to meet you at some point, and uhm…I wanted to know if you maybe kinda…wanted to meet them?” He managed to squeak out, as his heart raced and his mind began to overthink every choice he has ever made in his life as they were looking at him.

They blink at him slowly before they grin brightly. “I’d love to meet your family, Jaime! I’ve been waiting to meet them, I just thought you were too nervous to ask…” They chuckle, their words surprising and yet comforting him at the same time.

“Well, I was…and still kinda am…nervous about it, we’ve only been dating for a few months, I just thought it was too soon.” Jaime rubs the back of his neck as he laughs sheepishly, but he was so glad that they were at least excited to meet them, he really wanted them to get along, and their excitement makes him feel that’ll happen.

“Well, I’m ready to meet them when you are, Jaime.” They chuckle, sipping from their slushy that’s started to melt in the heat of summer, watching him essentially blue screen like a computer, making them stifle a snicker as they bite their lip, trying not to laugh.

“Uh…yeah…I’ll uh, I’ll…tell my family when I get…home…” Jaime sputters as their words finally catch up to him, his brain finally realizing that they’ve just agreed to meet his family, almost dropping his slushy as his mind tries to process that they weren’t at all nervous about meeting his family like how he was.

Their snickers finally escape them as he sputters his response, leaning up to kiss his cheek before resting back on his shoulder, making him even more of a flustered and stuttering mess of emotions, while they went back to enjoying their slushy. Jaime blinks, his face erupting into a blush, nearly dropping his slushy before the familiar yet pestering voice of Khaji-Da, who had almost been completely silent during their date, breaks through his mind.

“Jaime Reyes, do not drop your ice drink.” Khaji-Da made his presence known by reminding him of the cold drink in his hands, quickly scooping it back up before it fell from his hands, taking a moment to collect himself.

“Thank you, Khaji-Da…” Jaime mutters quietly, he didn’t want to drop the treat they gave him, returning to drinking it as they leaned against him, comfortable in the silence of each other, while Jaime was internally screaming, he has no idea how meeting his family will go, he just has to hope for the best.

Jaime was nervous, his fingers tapping against the steering wheel in a rhythmic beat as he pulled up to their house, seeing them waiting outside for him, he waves as they trot up to his car, getting into the passenger seat, before they leaned over and kissed his cheek as their usual greeting, smiling against his cheek before settling into their seat, buckling in. The soft kiss was a momentary comfort for him, granting him a moment away from his nervousness as he kissed their cheek in return after they settled in.

He tries to calm his nerves before pulling out of the driveway, letting them play the music they like as he drives through the neighborhood, tapping his steering wheel as he watches the road, trying to focus on driving and not the upcoming meeting with his family.

“Your nervous behavior makes no sense to me, Jaime Reyes.” Khaji-Da’s voice cuts through his thoughts, interrupting his nervous overthinking.

“And why’s that…?” Jaime sighs, muttering under his breath subconsciously, even if they already know about the scarab attached to his spine, it was subconscious to whisper when talking to Khaji-Da.

“You have nothing to worry about, your family has already shown positive signs of your partner, and that is only from what you’ve told them prior to this meeting.” Khaji-Da, while meaning to taunt his host, accidentally comforts him with his words, and the thing is, Khaji-Da is right, his family already has a positive outlook on his partner.

“Uh…thanks, Khaji-Da?” Jaime blinks in mild surprise at the odd comforting words from his scarab, barely noticing as he pulls up to his house, realizing that they’ve arrived, he sighs, putting the car in park and hopping out, walking around to the passenger side to let them out, shutting the door afterwards.

He’s still very nervous as they walk up to his home, he knows his family will probably love them just as much as he does, yet he can’t help but have clammy hands, wiping his sweaty palms on his hoodie before they took his hand with a slight smile, giving him something to ground himself as he took a deep breath and opened the door to his home, letting them inside first before following.

As he shut the door behind them, the familiar scent of his mothers cooking wafts through the air, filling his senses with that familiar comfort as he chuckles sheepishly when they look at him with a slight smirk and raised brow. “Heh…my mom probably is making something for us…” Jaime sheepishly remarks, rubbing the back of his neck.

“Well, I definitely wasn’t expecting that, but…it’s appreciated, I am hungry.” They chuckled, shaking their head as they held his hand, following his lead into the living room.

Jaime smiles at their little chuckle, bringing them into the living room where he finds his father, sister, and grandmother, seeming to be waiting for him. He takes a moment to calm his nerves before clearing his throat. “Uhm, everyone, this is mi amor, Y/N.” He introduced them with a nervous smile, holding their hand as he squeezed it gently.

“Oh, so this is the person you were gushing about for months!” His sister grins, teasing her brother, something Jaime was expecting from a mile away.

“…and this is my sister, Milagro, Y/N…” Jaime sighs, shaking his head with faux annoyance at his sister’s teasing, though he’s not truly annoyed, he knows it all good and fun.

“Ah, I see, you’re the one Jaime has told me about…” They chuckle quietly as they recognize the sibling teasing between the two of them, a smile on their face as they give a small wave to his father and grandmother.

“All good things I hope.” His father smirks at his son who groans quietly in the background, making them laugh again.

“Oh yes, all good things, it’s obvious how much he loves you all.” They nod with a small smile, nudging Jaime who shoots them a playful glare at them for outing him like that.

“Heh, I like them.” Milagro grins, leaning back against the couch as she approves of Jaime’s partner. “They taunt Jaime, always a good trait to have.” She snickers, resting her head in her hand.

“Oh yeah, he’s not escaping the taunting, especially not from me.” They snicker along with his sister, Jaime can’t be upset either, they’re getting along, and he’s happy to see it, and judging from his fathers and grandmother’s expressions, they’re approving of them as well.

“Yeah yeah, you two can team up on me later, I think Mom is done cooking.” Jaime laughs sarcastically as he rolls his eyes at their teasing remarks, and just as he spoke his mother called them into the kitchen, the food was ready.

Jaime takes a deep breath as his family walks to the kitchen, already feeling slight dread with what’s about to happen, his family is likely going to end up interrogating him on why he took so long when it came to meeting whoever caught his eye. They glanced at him, nudging his shoulder gently with a small, concerned frown, silently asking if he was alright, they knew that look, he was worried again.

“Yeah…I’m good, let’s go…” Jaime nods, taking their hand and pulling them along to the kitchen, entering it, they were both met with the smell of deliciously prepared food that was set out on the table. “C'mon…” He murmurs, pulling a chair out for them to sit down, waiting for them to take a seat before he sits down next to them.

His family is already seated, getting their food, Jaime helping them pick what they’d like to eat from the large amount of food in front of them, before he gets his own plate, they thank him softly just before the questioning begins, but before his family can start with the questions, his mother speaks up.

“It’s nice to finally meet you, Y/N, Jaime talks about you all the time.” His mother smiles gently at them, her words making Jaime flush in embarrassment, glancing away when they look over at him with a teasing smirk. “I’m Rocio. I hope he’s been treating you well.”

“It’s so nice to meet you too! And trust me, Jaime is an absolute sweetheart, always has been, even before we were dating.” They return the smile, taking a moment to tease Jaime about his sweet behavior, which made his mother chuckle along with them.

“Oh, he’s always been that way, it was so sweet that he finally got this meeting between us set up, I’ve been pestering him for months!” Rocio chuckles, the two seeming to immediately get along, much to Jaime’s relief.

“Yeah, he was so nervous about asking me! It was adorable.” They snicker, seeing Jaime shoot them a flustered glare, they saw the red tint on his cheeks and their smirk grew slightly.

Jaime huff, pouting at the teasing remarks from them, nudging their foot under the table, seeing them snicker out of the corner of his eye, which in turn, made him have to stifle a smile, he can’t be mad at them, their laughter and snickering just makes him to happy. He pauses as everyone starts introducing themselves, but he knows what’s going to follow, so many questions about his relationship, and he’s trying to prepare for the awkward and embarrassing questions that are bound to cause teasing from Khaji-Da.

“Once again, you worry over nothing important, Jaime Reyes.” The voice of the scarab on his bug rang through his mind, almost making him jump out of his skin at the kitchen table, receiving a confused glance from his partner, to which he blushes and looks down at his food.

“So, Y/N, how is your relationship with Jaime? Happy, I hope.” Rocio hums before taking a bite of food, looking at the two expectantly. And so the questions begin.

“Very much so! I’ve been happy with Jaime, he’s been nothing but sweet to me, and I love that about him.” They smile, responding with a cheerful demeanor, but under the table they are holding his hand, gently squeezing his hand to comfort him. “Yeah…I uh, I had a crush on him for years, I was just too nervous to say anything…” They chuckle sheepishly, a small blush coating their cheeks.

“Oh?” Milagro grins, looking at Jaime with a teasing expression, he already knows that he is going to be teased for hours after they leave.

Jaime scratches the back of his neck, his blush deepening as he glances away, flustered by his family’s knowing smiles, even his own partner was teasing him at this point. “Hey, I had to muster up the courage for months before asking you out!” He pouts, looking at his partner who stared at him with a mischievous smile.

“And you were still a nervous wreck, it was adorable.” They snicker, nudging his shoulder with their own, grinning at him as he rolls his eyes, flustered by their playful taunting.

“You’re so mean…” Jaime huffs, but a small smile breaks out onto his face, sure, he is anxious but their cheerful and playful demeanor helps him calm down and relax during their lunch.

He knows that his family is going to bombard them with questions, and he feels he’s prepared enough for it now, with the support of his partner beside him, he’ll make it through the day, and hopefully by the end, his family will truly see why he loves them so much, he knows they will, Khaji-Da has been tracking their approval, and it’s been nothing but positive, maybe he doesn’t have anything to worry about after all.

After the questioning from his family and the lunch his mother so lovingly made, Jaime was happy to see that his family and his partner were getting along well, sure, he was being teased by his sister and his uncle, but that was to be expected, and he can deal with that, rolling his eyes as they teased him for being so soft with his partner. He cares about them, so sue him, but he knows that his family is happy for him, he was lucky to find someone so understanding to his situation as Blue Beetle and Khaji-Da, he wouldn’t want to lose that for the world.

Although, the one thing he definitely cannot handle is his mother pulling out the family album and showing his partner his embarrassing baby photos.

“Jaime Reyes, your dignity is about to be tarnished.” Khaji-Da informs him, startling Jaime before his words confuse him.

“What?” Jaime mutters in confusion, his arms crossed as he glanced over his shoulder as if to look at the scarab on his spine.

“Your mother is showing your mate baby photos.” Khaji-Da states bluntly, making Jaime whip around with wide eyes, seeing his mother showing his grinning partner his old baby photos from years ago. Oh no.

Jaime watched in mild horror as his mother showed them his baby photos, seeing them grinning and cooing at how cute he was as a baby, he just looks so adorable! He had little chubby cheeks when he was a baby, it’s so adorable, they can’t help but coo at how he looked when he was a little baby.

“Wha- Mama!” Jaime had immediately rushed over to try and grab the album from his mother, but missed completely, almost tumbling over as his mother sidestepped him, dodging his hands.

“This was Jaime when he was a year old, he loved that onesie!” Rocio points to another photo of baby Jaime, the two of them cooing at how cute he was in the little blue onesie, Jaime watching on in embarrassment, hearing Khaji-Da snicker at his embarrassing moment.

“Oh! He was so cute!” They grin, cooing at how cute he was as baby, he even had a blue onesie, how adorable was that! He was so little when he was a baby too, it was so cute to them, plus it’s more material to tease him about, lovingly of course.

“Trust me, he was the most adorable little baby, he used to be so pouty! His cheeks would puff up whenever he pouted, it was so hard not to give into that little face.” Rocio chuckles, flipping through the pages as she showed them the plethora of baby photos from Jaime’s childhood, much to his dismay.

“Mi amor…” Jaime grumbles, pouting at their teasing grin when they look at him, seeing them smirk slightly before looking back at his mother.

“I don’t think he stopped being pouty, he just lost his chubby cheeks.” They snicker, a light tone in their voice as they looked at the photos on the new page in the album.

Jaime groans to himself, knowing he can’t stop his mom from showing them his baby photos, even though he desperately wants to stop her from giving them even more ammo for teasing remarks, but he can’t, the power of a mother is too much for him. It won’t stop him from pouting though, yet seeing the both of them snickering and cooing at the old photos, it makes him happy, they’re getting along with his family, and that’s always a good thing.

“You were a chubby infant, Jaime Reyes.” Khaji-Da taunts his host, Jaime could practically hear the smug grin in the alien scarabs voice, if he could grin, he would definitely be doing so.

“Shut up, Khaji-Da…” Jaime grumbles, rolling his eyes, before his attention was taken by his partner speaking to his mother, the question making him freeze.

“Can I take a photo of baby Jaime in a onesie? I want that to be the background of my phone.” They flipped the page back to their favorite photo of the little chubby baby, snickering a little at how cute the photo was again.

“Oh absolutely, it’s one of the best.” Rocio almost immediately agreed, chuckling because she already knows that Jaime is going to have one hell of a time with teasing afterwards.

“Thank you.” They grin, pulling their phone out to snap a photo of baby Jaime, making sure to get a good photo of it, chuckling as they make it the background of their phone, quickly walking over to Jaime to show him. “Look at how cute you were!”

“Babe…” Jaime groans softly, a hint of a smile on his face as they show him the phone, smiling as he sees that they did indeed change the background of their phone to the picture of him as a baby. “Why are you like this?” He sighs, looking at them with a smile, he can’t help but smile, they just looked so proud of themselves.

“You love me.” They chuckle, kissing his cheek, before shooting him a wink and walking back over to where his family has gathered to go through the old family album so they can continue to coo at his baby photos.

Jaime sighs softly, shaking his head as he smiles, watching them get along with his family, yes, at the expense of his dignity and baby photos, but they were bonding, and his family already seems to get along with them, they clearly had even before meeting them, it’s not surprising, given how much he gushed about them, which he only realized now.

“Jaime Reyes, you are, what the Impulse would call, whipped for your mate.” Khaji-Da taunted him once again, the voice in his mind smug, using the words from his own friends against Jaime.

“Shut up!” Jaime groans, leaning his head back to stare at the ceiling as he grumbles, before sighing and deciding to join the conversation of his baby pictures. “So what if I am? I love them, always will.” He huffs to Khaji-Da despite a small grin being on his face as he walks over, happy that everyone was getting along.
