Dear fucking lord. Look, as someone who’ll be a psychology major, as someone who is mentally ill, neurodivergent, physically disabled, and is mostly friends with folks who are mentally ill and disabled as well, DON’T FUCKING DO THIS. IF YOU ARE A PSYCH MAJOR OR PSYCHOLOGIST OR PSYCHIATRIST, DONT FUCKING TELL PEOPLE THEY SHOULDN’T PERSUE TREATMENT, DIAGNOSES, ANSWERS, ANYTHING. It took me years to get my diagnoses and my own psychiatrist didn’t believe me, so we had to go out of pocket. Believe people when they tell you they are neurodivergent. Believe people when they tell you they want to get answers about their symptoms. Believe people when they tell you anything about their mental health, illnesses, disabilities. Believe them! Uplift them! I hope, in my future, I am a psychologist who helps people be heard, listened to, and helped. That’s what everyone deserves in healthcare, including mental healthcare!

a while ago i attended this lecture on autism. guy in the audience said he had many of the symptoms that were presented and asked what should he do to get treatment and possibly a diagnosis. instead of answering his question the psychologist went on a tangent about how “the clinic reigns all powerful over guesswork”, and how actually it has become a trend amongst little children on the internet to claim that they are autistic for cool points, and that this hurts real autistic people. no she didn’t tell him how to get his symptoms looked into, she just made it very clear that to her, aknowledging your own symptoms is bad and evil and hurts the poor real mentally ill people.

an ex-friend of mine, then a psychology major and by now probably a full psychologist, once lectured me on how horrible and bad it was that i told her “i probably have some sort of neurodivergency”, and that if i were her patient she would never give me a diagnosis because “you aren’t like this now, but i know that if you get a diagnosis you’ll use it as an excuse to start treating people badly. that’s just how mentally ill people are.”

same ex-friend was extremely disgusted when she found out that fans sometimes make neurodivergency headcanons for characters that have the same symptoms as they do, and that authors sometimes write books with neurodivergent protagonists in stories that don’t focus on that (ex: she seemed horrified that percy jackson has adhd?)

multiple psychologists i’ve seen on facebook agree that they should refuse to treat patients that say “i’m here because i have symptoms of a disorder and wonder if i have it”, and that a patient should arrive to a psychologist as a blank slate.

school psychologist asked me how i was feeling about my trauma situation and i told him i thought my friends would leave me. instead of addressing the issue he said that that no i didn’t, that i was lying, that i had searched “bpd symptoms” online and now i was faking symptoms because i wanted to have bpd, that he shouldn’t have told me he suspected i had a personality disorder because now look what was happening. no, i didn’t search bpd symptoms online. yes, my friends left me, it was a completely founded belief and not a symptom, let alone a faked symptom.

so the next time you hear someone saying they’re “anti self-diagnosis” i want you to understand what they’re saying. what they’re saying is:

- i don’t want people to be aware of their own symptoms

- i don’t think my patients should have access to any information that doesn’t come from me

- i don’t think neurodivergent people should learn how to cope with their symptoms and live “normal” lives

- i think neurodivergent people should be denied a diagnosis because the moment they get one they will become evil and dangerous

- i don’t think people who don’t look like a stereotype could possibly be neurodivergent, even if they have all the symptoms, so i think they are faking it for attention and should be denied treatment

it’s kinda funny to me how that dumb scene in kiwami 1 of majima getting shot and left for dead in the harbor was basically just added as a half-assed way to explain majima not being around for a bit of the plot, but they accidentally(?) just made it seem like start of a chain reaction where majima ended up feeling slighted and heartbroken after being abandoned like that and then lashed out about it via smashing a big truck into the building kiryu was in. and yeah that isn’t inherently a romantic thing as-is but then they go and add the part where majima grabs a hostess and performatively hits on her as in-kiryu’s-face as possible, she says she’s already in love with someone, and majima lets her go immediately, no questions asked, making a big fucking point of it just to say see THAT kiryu? i lost the post but i saw someone talking about how some of y’all act like being weird is a choice and like. YEAHHHHHHH.

that’s fine, it might be for you. but i just live like this and don’t know any other way. like yeah i’ve worked customer service, i can do innocuous small talk, but anything beyond that, i don’t understand what i’m missing. and it’s frustrating to see the tonal disconnect especially from people who are like “uwu embrace weirdness!!” where they’re like. dressing quirky and talking about bugs and listening to obscure music and eschewing small talk to ask Deep Questions on the first date and unlearning their tendency to not infodump. and generally have an idea of what Weirdness is supposed to look like. idk man some of us wake up and get out of bed and can’t figure out why the rest of their coworkers chitchat with each other but when they join the conversation it dies.

weirdness is value neutral. let’s stop trying to turn it into a badge because quite frankly, it’s not a choice for everyone. it’s fucking exhausting to never be on the same wavelength as other people and they’re going to react the way they do and label you the way they will without any conscious actions on your end. it’s difficult to talk about this without feeling like you’ll be dismissed as immature, a teenager whining “no one understands me” but the thing is. sometimes you don’t grow out of feeling alone and different, and there’s no good way to talk about it without feeling like people will think you’re just fishing for pity.

people need to realise tone policing and respectability politics are literally not at all related to people not listening to you because you're being hurtful. there’s a difference between being angry and loud and aggressive towards people who are causing you harm and just downright cruelty, and even if you’re making the best points in the world no one will listen to you if you do so in a cruel and demeaning manner because they will not trust you’re acting in good faith! and that is not their fault! if you’re not trustworthy and you're throwing innocent people under the bus, how can an uneducated layman know if you’re talking about an actual problem in an extremely unhelpful way or if you’re trying to justify that cruelty? especially since On This Website we have had frequent examples of terfs using bullshit concern trolling about ace people or bisexual people or nonbinary people to try and groom vulnerable queer people into their ideology. people aren’t naive and if you act like one of those people aren’t going to risk you being another wave of them. this is not to say people who act like this are inherently evil or terfy a lot of the times i see people doing this i agree with their central point.

like, for example, there’s been a lot of posts in this nature about transphobia i 100% agree with but also i cannot engage with bc they are deliberately and repeatedly misgendering me and other nonbinary people by reducing us down to our genitals and mocking us for not fitting into the transmasc transfem mould they automatically decided was inclusive when it really isn’t at all in the slightest then forcing us into it anyway. i am not going to reblog posts calling me slurs, even if i think they’re factually correct, because that’s cruel and bigoted. but that’s just one example. one i see brought up and thankfully avoided a lot recently is misogyny towards white women being used in discussions about white women and privilege. white women do have white privilege obviously and that is worthy of discussion. but it is Not okay to mock abuse or spread literal incel rhetoric about the dog pill (like, that is Literal incel forum shit, and they use it against women of colour too why are you normalising it) that’s just violent misogyny. or a lot of self proclaimed “leftists” who can critique capitalism super well but can’t stop throwing around the r slur and spreading eugenicist rhetoric. and the list goes on and on. people will not listen to you if you are racist or homophobic or misogynistic or whatever even if you are totally 100% correct bc people aren’t going to be reading to the end of your post to see that if you sound like blaire white they’ll just block you immediately and even if they do people who don’t know enough on that topic- so, presumably the people you’re trying to reach while doing activism????- will genuinely have no way of knowing if you’re fucking with them or not bc that Has happened and people who do know enough haven’t learnt anything and have just spent the last half hour being called slurs which means you’ve just been an asshole for no reason.

there’s a difference between righteous anger and impoliteness (very fair and understandable) to downright being a cruel bigot to people (which makes you look like a shit stirrer at best) and that needs to be noted. being angry is fine. but being a rude asshole to people bc they’re a minority- even if you are one yourself, even if you’re “more oppressed” (which is really fucking hard to quantify anyway bc believe it or not different things are discriminated against to different degrees based on a wild number of topics especially since america is in fact not the only place with bigotry and bigotry like everything culturally upheld can vary wildly in expression even if it’s the same bullshit deep down)- makes you literally completely indistinguishable from some edgelord troll to people who are trying to learn and just insults people who know enough to deduce you’re correct.

A while ago, we saw someone explain why they don’t like first person. Aside from “it’s shallow” (which feels like a shallow critique itself without more context), they cited a desire to understand what all the other characters in a scene are thinking and feeling, and I found that very interesting.

Because I don’t feel like every story benefits from knowing every character involved in it to such an intimate degree.

A lot of interesting speculation can be derived from gaps in the narrative. Why did he do that? What was her real motive there? The protagonist can speculate, but are they really the most objective source for that, or are you assuming that they are because they’re in the narrator seat, and they haven’t explicitly called themself unreliable?

First person creates a very specific opportunity to convey characters outside of the protagonist via showing and not telling.

It also creates a great opportunity to put your reader in a mental maze (the central narrator’s perspective) and give them a fun crumb trail out of it (the way that other characters react to the narrator).

I personally think that first person really shines under the right circumstances; and I think one of the best circumstances is when the central narrator has some horrendously skewed worldview. When they’re a fucked up little guy. When they think they know what’s up and they really, really don’t.

And when there’s other characters just as fun outside of them to force the reader to fill in the blank spaces for themselves.

Anyway, sometimes I feel like the push against first person is motivated by people being burned by boring, one-dimensional first person narrators and/or a distaste for common YA conventions. At other times, I feel like it’s motivated by the very bland desire to have the author shine a flashlight into every nook, cranny, and crevice of the narrative so that you don’t miss out on anything. I understand the desire to know more, but it's also fun to be able pick up the flashlight yourself as a reader!

No style of narration is inherently lesser than another. They just suit different readers and author's tastes.
