abilities:

can shapeshift into any animal it’s seen before, or into an incorporeal force. its most common forms are a wolf, a cat, and a crow

in its incorporeal form, omen has general poltergeist-like abilities; it can throw or manipulate objects, break things, wail, change the temperature of a room, and make lights or fires go out

can speak any language necessary to interact with a human, including several dead or obscure languages

true form is a tarry, amorphous monster with many limbs; it sometimes gets stuck in this form or lapses into it when stressed

makes a variety of nonhuman noises, such as purring, shrieking, chattering, and snarling

doesn’t deliberately cause bad things, but misfortune tends to follow him…

personality (pre-arc):

very friendly and enthusiastic to everyone it meets

eager to please; will follow basically any commands a human gives it because it’s desperate for some kind of connection or praise. in fact sometimes it’s a little too eager and will obey instructions to a T, exactly as they’re said to it

slightly afraid of humans, acts like a people-pleaser both to hide his resentment toward them and to minimize the possibility of him getting hurt by them; has trust issues related to his past

cowers and hides when cornered or threatened; does not resist or fight back, despite being more than capable of doing so

has a mischievous streak; loves stealing, scaring people, and playing pranks; a bit cocky when doing so, as omen assumes he’s too good to get caught and thus throws caution to the wind

perfectionist, especially when given instructions; becomes confused and panicked when instructions are unclear and contradictory

personality (post-arc):

little SHIT

becomes the owner of a grandiose (and fucked up) hotel through a series of schemes

covets and is deeply obsessed with money; gets jealous and frustrated when it sees other people become wealthy or improve their financial situation, because it deems them unworthy and views them as competition

will fuck someone over for all they’re worth; unlike his mentor, he isn’t afraid to cut corners and to scam, cheat, and lie his way to success

snarky and condescending; fully embraces his resentment toward humans, views them only as a means to an end; to him, there’s no such thing as an innocent human, and to say so is hypocritical. he believes that humans aren’t good for anything aside from what they can do for him— and that they’re so horrible that they deserve his treatment of them

also unlike its mentor, omen is of the affably evil variety. it’s sarcastic and it’s vitriolic, but it’s not grumpy. it remains some of its old friendly demeanor and enjoys talking with anyone who can banter with it, even if it’s frustrated or annoyed with them. omen often uses charisma to its advantage

deep down, there’s still that vulnerable core, the person omen was to begin with. because omen is convinced that money, property, and standoffishness are the only means by which it can truly be safe, though, it’s wrapped that core in like 50 layers of barbed wire and electric fence

backstory:

has no memory of any sort of family, human or otherwise; omen only remembers waking up one day in the woods, hungry, cold, and alone. for a while omen survived like this, until it caught the scent of roasting meat, saw a light in the forest, and decided to investigate

this would turn into the first of many instances of omen being rejected, attacked, or otherwise treated with hostility by humans— largely because of his appearance and mannerisms. he has spent much of his life traveling from place to place in the forms of various animals, searching for food and shelter and leaving only when he’s been pushed out. this is how, over time, omen made his way to london. almost all of his time there has been spent in the form of a cat or a crow, and he’s narrowly dodged several incidents.

omen met ebenezer, its mentor, when prudence captured it in its cat form and dragged it into the house. ebenezer reluctantly nursed the injured cat back to health, only to be shocked and horrified when it took humanoid form and begged him to let it repay him. a lot of confused screaming and one contract later, and the rest was history

AU of an AU: Adventures With Anxiety

so far i could only think of a couple AUs of mine where this concept might work well with the main story LMAOO

the garden

HAL’s anxiety-animal is a sabertooth cat. it used to be just an ordinary, aloof cat, but his refusal to acknowledge it made it grow larger and more aggressive over time. in fact, HAL is so hell-bent on not acknowledging it that he refuses to even give it a name. he tries to work with it when he can, and it usually cooperates— but a cooperative sabertooth is still a sabertooth, so when it gets bad, it gets bad. just one misstep immediately causes it to panic and lash out.

AM doesn’t have an animal similar to HAL’s, nor is he aware that such entities exist. he’s learned to pick up on the signs that HAL’s anxiety is going into overdrive, though, and it’s taken him some time to work through his immediate instinct of honing in on that and going for the throat. instead, AM tries to remove HAL from situations that upset him— or, failing that, he tries to keep him company.

you’re a drifter, shape-shifter

(for context: this is an AU for scrooge: a christmas carol, based loosely on a character.ai interaction, wherein a pre-redemption ebenezer accidentally adopts a shapeshifting demon kid named omen. it’s a chaotic mess and it’s often heartfelt and sometimes it’s sad but mostly it’s really funny because ebenezer is a worse influence on the demon than the demon is on him)

given his supernatural abilities, omen is the only person who can see other people’s anxiety-animals. omen is thus quick to point out that while ebenezer is accompanied by a ferocious wolf, his nephew, harry, is followed everywhere by an adorable little puppy. needless to say ebenezer Feels Some Type of Way About It (he is seething with envy and plans on making it everyone’s problem)

harry’s anxiety-pup actually used to be much bigger: a frightened, overprotective wolfhound. with time and communication, though, he gradually tamed it. sometimes he sees glimpses of the terrified dog it used to be, but things are much better for both of them now

prudence can also vaguely sense these entities, but is unable to see or interact with them— all she really senses is a human around her starting to feel stressed out

the urge to make an adventures with anxiety AU for literally all my favorite characters because i project my own neuroses onto every single one of them (and also because i will NEVER pass up the chance to assign a character a fursona)

okay, so i have just spent the past few days binging @angelrider13     sweat tears or the sea au and I am seriously in love.  but as I was about to sleep, my playlist came up with this song ‘In the Pines - Janel Drewis’. of course my sleep deprived (it is almost 3 am when i put this in my drafts) and au inundated brain heard the words wrong, heard ‘with the tides’ instead of ‘in the pines’ and my mind went ‘song about a nif soldier trying to convince a seaborne on land to tell them where she slept, thinking that it would lead him to a resistance’ and for some reason i can just see some seaborne/leviathan singing this and it become and an almost resistance song to the galahdians. another song that I've been singing along to cause its on my morning ‘wake the fuck up playlist’ is Wolf - First Aid Kit, where the start of the song goes ‘wolf-mother, where you been?’ and now, because this AU has taken over my brain like Weird Al wiping the original words to American Pie from my brain (’my my this here anakin guy’), I keep on singing Leviathan/Ramuh/Ardyn related lines instead.

Down to the river - Ben Caplan ‘I went down to the river, Blowing out onto the sea. On my way to the ocean, Let the spirit swallow me.’ (this ones less about Thalassa, but more about people not knowing anything and and being shown the truth) 

Muddy Waters - LP ‘We are kneeling at the river's edge and tempting. All the steps to follow closer right behind.’ (god I love LP, so so much)

The Curse - Agnes Obel ‘It was swift, it was just, another wave of a miracle. But no one, nothing at all would go for the kill. If they called on every soul in the land, on the moon. Only then would they know a blessing in disguise.’ (to me this is singing about the curse, the ‘blessing’ of demanded death and ruin for salvation, that was pulled over the eyes of the people who follow Bahamut and Shiva).

I’m just gonna go back and reread EVERYTHING again so I can enjoy this AU world, maybe even dip a toe into drabbles, and doodle tiny green haired mermaids in my course books.
