the funniest thing ever was when Hera Wolf 359 said:
either: 1.) she doesn't actually have a sarcasm setting and made that up as a joke while the engine was exploding and they were falling into the star or 2.) she DOES have a sarcasm setting which she made sure to adjust BEFORE STOPPING THEM FROM FALLING INTO THE STAR!
i just love her so much

Lan Wangji Goes To Lotus Pier AU: Part 3: Enveloping Feelings.
(Part 1, Part 2, Part 4)
#poorly drawn mdzs#mdzs#lan wangji#Yungmeng Jiang training arc AU#I wanted to try out a different paneling style for this one - sorry I'm a day late! (there will still be a post tomorrow to keep on track)#The original 3 panel comic idea was fine but the point of this new schedule was to take time to push myself a bit more.#I was taking a look back through some comic artists I felt inspired by#and I really loved how Lynda Barry fills her gutters with patterns and doodles!#Obviously I'm not going as absolutely wild with it as she does but it was a great exercise!#I truly think the gutters are the most important and most overlooked part of any comic. There's lots going on in that space.#It's the same with timeskips. The implied movement between moments that we don't see changes depending on how wide that gap is#You're here for the funny tags so here's some that ties this time talk together:#I think LWJ was thinking about that second note from day 2 but it took him 7 days of hazing to commit it to paper.#I think he sends it a day later and immediately regrets it. Chasing down the messenger and everything.#You know if something actually happened to his brother he would never ever forgive himself for putting the bad vibes out there.#Third time skip was the hardest because there was so many possible flavours of jokes here. Day 8/9 was a personal favourite.#day 14 was also funny (week by week). I think the debate on 'how long does lwj take to catch feelings' is more or less:#'how long does it take for him to arrive at a particular stage of grief and yearning (and awareness of it all)#This is a symphony. There is an act by act structure. Every day he is fighting to keep his old sensibilities. He is losing so badly.#(I'll be returning to the main comic soon but there is more of this AU to come!)

i will preface this with that im aware that it doesn't actually matter gdjgfkh but im still so bewildered by how many different ways people come up with to mix up kon's two names instead of just using them as two names, even though they DO use two separate names for clark. like people are out here going kon el kent, or kon kent, or most egregiously konner kent but i have never once seen kal kent, kal el kent, or... kalark kent? what's up with all that.
#rimi talks#like it's the same concept. they both have two names. how come clark kent and kal-el are both understood to be two separate names#and yet kon-el and conner kent get every mashup under the sun???#to be clear i think the mashups are dumb. like you know real people can have different names in different languages right#but even if i think they're dumb what Really gets me is that they're not consistent.#if you're gonna call him konner then you should be calling her karnda or some shit#commit to the bit put your whole pussy into it???

The "movie about a movie that kills you" is a surprisingly robust genre of horror. There's a wide range of approaches, but one key factor is the question of how good the deadly film in a film is, on its own. Some approaches are keeping the faux film entirely unseen, use brief clips, or make it real short.
Antrum: The Deadliest Film Ever Made goes in for a high risk approach and delivers a complete finished film, ostensibly made in the 70s and never released, framed by brief opening and closing info bites to set the stage of it.
Somehow this thing was completely off my radar, which means I was taken fully off guard as an ominous warning about the content in white text on black appeared on screen, giving a thirty second count down to leave if I wanted.
Wonderful showmanship and canny filmmaking that got me right in the mood to enjoy what followed. While I wouldn't call it a scary movie, I found it almost delightful in the atmospheric dread and devotion to its aesthetic of low budget 70s films. Nothing in it feels like a curse on its own, but it does feel like the sort of movie that could easily prompt psychological distress for anyone under psychotropic influences, pre-existing emotional vulnerability, or prone to delusional states. Not through anything supernatural, more because it works hard to keep the viewer in constant doubt over what is and is not real for the characters in the film. Combined with the framing device of it being a movie somehow able to influence the real world of the viewer, and the use of fractionally visible flashes of occult symbols on the screen, it generates an intense feeling of unreality which for me was an almost drug-like high and an immersive pleasure.
The premise of Antrum is simply a brother and sister decide to dig a hole to hell, and the movie plays out around this event by surrounding it with disturbing sounds and imagery, as well as real world dangers that weave the protagonists between the supernatural and mundane while keeping them in a state of terror and madness that grows until it becomes unrelenting.
In a certain sense it also feels cursed, like the kind of film where there are elements that feel very transgressive - in particular the opening scene which to my mind evoked Un Chien Andalou - not the infamous eyeball slicing scene, but the use of rotting animals. The few and very basic visual effects remind me as well of the early Survival Research Laboratory devices engineered by Mark Pauline.
However, the core question for me is also always what is the movie about besides the plot. If I had to identify some rough themes, I would say it's trying to explore the idea of understanding death and violence through the eyes of children who do not yet have the psychological tools for processing such matters, but who have been left on their own to do so regardless.
Many of the unusual elements in the movie can relate to death rituals poorly understood, starting from the very premise of digging a hole into the earth. And the same act is surrounded by strange rituals unclear in their origin, ideas which might be logical drawn from watching words recited over a grave without having a connection of purpose. Their encounters with other people are fully without possibility of communication as none of them speak the same language, and these mundane threats feel at times akin to a satanic Alice in Wonderland, rituals and violence whose meaning cannot be understood by the protagonists.
Likewise the supernatural is full of unprocessed images of death. Demons with black skin who look like mummified corpses. River crossings and empty chains dragging through leaves. It's as if death itself has manifested through the ambient world, surrounding the two children and refusing to let them leave its circle.
In combination with the intriguing use of sigils inscribed throughout, it creates a movie that is for me a joy to watch. An absolutely perfect Halloween spook for next year, but your mileage may vary between finding it full of pretentious nonsense or maybe the scariest film you'll ever watch. It can really come off either way, and I'm honestly not quite sure why my reaction was actual joy in the watching. Not to undercut the severity of the subject matter, but I just can't stop thinking about how happy I was to watch the movie at work mechanically, to enjoy the well oiled pieces fitting together, and then all topped off with the delicious extra treat of the framing device. Surely worth 90 minutes of your life.
#antrum#unreality#definitely big content warnings about animal death and injury#also children in danger and possible child deaths#not many jump scares though if any#also tbh i genuinely think it has the potential to bring on a delusion because it is very committed to the bit#there's no part where its like haha jk this isn't a real documentary about a movie its all fake#the framing device is used to wrap everything up in a way that never breaks the immersion#so if you're in a really suggestive state there's a nonzero chance you may believe the movie is going to kill you for real

My brain just hit an old hyperfixation (is this what it's called? I hope I used the word right) and oh dear am I losing my mind now. I need to write a story I think. About this one old guy. He's unhinged. There's so much information about him and yet not enough. I want to explore his character so much. He's definitely a criminal - at least he was one - and I'm 95% sure he can do actual real magic, and he's a musician and an artist and an actor and a magician and a philosopher and a traveler and a conman and so much more and also I think he's some kind of immortal. Maybe he just has a VERY long life. It's strongly implied he was a pirate at some point of his life. He started a cult by accident several times. My conspiracy theories about him include him being a secret god.
He's also a freaking round blue raven. Someone save me from my mind.
#seriously why is he so cool#he's like. a ball.#he's ROUND#if no one stops me I'm gonna make an au and introduce all my mutuals to a russian cartoon that lives in my head rent-free#it has an obviously mysterious old man and an old woman who seems to be very normal but actually has some weird past as well#and they're in love you can fight me on this THEY. ARE. IN LOVE.#there's a disastrous scientist who keeps forgetting to sleep and is kinda cute in a nerdy way#there's a mechanic guy who lives a bit away from everyone surrounded by tech and he's actually unhinged#he's a single father btw. he made a robot baby because he was lonely. it's very important for his character.#I WILL ship the scientist and the mechanic because no one can stop me <3#there's a local farmer who was a famous disco dancer an archeologist and a VERY famous actor in the past. he doesn't care about it anymore.#he was like. Captain America actor kind of famous. or Superman.#and then he just committed a bunch of crimes for his new friends and left to live in a village far away from big cities#all those people with very suspicious past raise a bunch of children together#absolutely inseparable adhd and autism best friends boys who I think are capable of destroying the world#and toxic teenagers couple:#a girl who honestly needs to figure herself out first before dating anyone and a poet boy who is SO deeply in love with her it's not okay#the farmer dude also has a rebellious teenager niece who visits him sometimes#and the mechanic's kid is usually in space but sometimes returns and I am not ashamed to admit that I cried during some of those episodes#I am going to think about them. they are so important to me.#I am going insane.#also yes they are all round animals. if you're wondering.#someone just tranquillise me already or something. it's 5 a.m. and I am losing my sanity

marcus licinius crassus & his sons
hey do you guys ever think about how crassus' father and brothers died, leaving him the surviving son, and then the tragedy repeats with marcus jr (with his father and brother dying at carrhae)
anyway, tfw you tell your brother not to do reckless shit when you're not around, and he immediately goes off and does All Of That the second he arrives in gaul. what do you MEAN there was a hostage crisis. what the fuck.
The Sons of Crassus, Ronald Syme
Publius Crassus - ‘optimus adulescens’ and his unfortunate career, Ireneusz Łuć
Pompeius Trogus, in the epitome of Justin, 42.4.6
society6 | ko-fi | twitter (pillowfort, cohost) | deviantart
#marcus licinius crassus#uh. both of them#publius licinius crassus#roman republic tag#drawing tag#i feel so so so so normal about the family crassus. SO NORMAL. im not wailing about them at all#(you ever think about how marcus licinius crassus frugi married a descendant of pompey. that makes me feel WILD)#my favorite scene ive written in the cassius comic right after the gladiator one#is the one where marcus jr tells cassius to get out of his house and he just. screams.#there is nothing more opressive than the weight of an empty house. the realization that you're alone.#i did in fact realize after writing this short dialogue that i was. borrowing. from dean supernatural's 'as long as i'm around#nothing bad is gonna happen to you' speech from 1.14. a little bit. i can HEAR it.#which is. yeah okay. listen. i was watching that show in 2008-9. ofc it was going to do something to my brain#however. publius crassus is fully capable of committing whatever crimes he needs to commit. in my heart tho he's Baby Brother

Day 22: Camp
(Blackwall x Mallory Trevelyan)
Sticking to his plan to keep dressing like a woman after being caught in the Conclave in his feminine attire sounded like a great idea at the time. Now, stuck out in a camp in the middle of the woods, Mallory Trevelyan is realizing just how tough it’s going to be.
#abgink 2024#original content#dragon age#ao3#dragon age inquisition#da inquisitor#da blackwall#blackwall x inquisitor#mallory trevelyan#FIRST MALLORY FIC ON AO3 LET'S FUCKING GOOOOO#I love thinking about the small details of this comedy of errors Mallory finds himself in#Go to Conclave to meet up with your estranged dad under the guise of politics. Be wearing full makeup and woman clothes to make a point.#Conclave explodes. The Left and Right hands of the Divine are demanding to know who the fuck you are. Panic. Say you're a woman.#Assume that admitting to being queer will get you killed due to your insanely abusive religious upbringing. Commit to the bit.#Meet a really handsome Grey Warden. Develop a crush on him. He calls you “My Lady”. Assume you'll be keeping this bit up forever.#I love Mallory so much#I wrote like four Mallory fics and they're all toward the end of Inktober lol#And I'll probably be posting more of them next month

Can you tell us a bit more about your Sharpclaw? Why is he so concerned with loyalty when he likely was on his own before and this whole “being loyal to a clan” thing is probably as new to him as any cat else?
Long ago, Spiderstar realized that her Clan would not be able to survive if they stayed together.
No matter how many times they killed the rats, they would come back. For every warrior lost, it seemed like the hordes gained another. Her cats were admitting taking food from twolegs, always ready to run from the gorge at a moment's notice, looking at her with guilty eyes. She began to wonder if she was wrong for admonishing them, the way a leader is expected to.
The story goes that one day, she observed a web of spiders hatching from their eggs. The mother watched as her children created small plumes, and floated away on the breeze. It hit Spiderstar, in that moment, that this was how they would survive. Connected by a great web, but scattered to the sky, where they could not be found.
BB!SkyClan never fully disbanded. Like a web, they would share news, come to help one another and inform of safe twoleg houses, trade kittens to each other to raise as apprentices.
From Spiderstar, to her successor, and down to Skywatcher, there was always a "keeper" of this information. When Firestar and Brokenstar arrived, Skywatcher simply spread the news on the breeze. His connections told their connections, and soon, a dozen cats had answered the call.
And, of course, Sharpclaw was one of them.
He may be a rogue, lived most of his life on his own, but in his head that just means he knows more about what it's like to not have a Clan. He's happy to work with ex-Kittypets who choose the Clan above their humans... but even them, how can they ever truly understand what it's like to have nowhere else to go?
He's been waiting for this moment his whole life, from the time he was a young kit being told the stories of Old, from the second he was first introduced to old Skywatcher as a child. "And here," He argues, "Are kittypets who see our way of life as a game. The time of SkyClan's Scattering is over, we are upon the days of a new dawn, and these outsiders are clinging to the past. We don't need twolegs, or the kittypets that can't choose between US or THEM. Leafstar, loyalty is the value that this Clan is built on-- we have to be strong without the help of these Daylight Warriors."
"Lol," Leafstar says, "Lmao even"
I'm bit a bit hyperbolic, but that's how Sharpclaw FEELS about her responses. She's not LISTENING to him (because his ideas suck) or TAKING HIM SERIOUSLY (she is, she's just telling him no and he doesn't like that). She has him as her deputy exactly because she is seeking opposing viewpoints, but this doesn't matter to him in his perceived entitlement.
And this is the resentment that Darktail eventually targets, realizing that his pride and ego is the perfect wedge to drive between him and Leafstar.
Leafstar wasn't picked by SkyClan, someone else picked her for you.
She doesn't want to listen to you, you're so correct and she doesn't appreciate you.
She's letting weakness into your Clan, and if you wait too long it'll be too late
PROVE it to her by taking YOUR supporters and attacking her at night. Show her how good of an ally her kittypets are when they can't defend their Clan, safe in their human nests.
Take leadership from her, you will lead your Clan to the new dawn you've always envisioned.
#I disagree with the idea that you can't be violently committed to new ideas though#You don't have to have been raised with something to think it's important#Even destructively so#especially when you're talking about entitled assholes like my version of Sharp#It's a bit confusing to me how many people kinda like... meet the idea of a BB!Skyclan cat being xenophobic#They're very different from Forest Four but that doesn't mean they don't have their own flavor of xenophobia#Being Forest Four isn't the root of all evil and there are other ways of being bigoted#For a heavy handed example it's kinda like being confused at the idea of an american being xenophobic#because the country was built on immigration#bigotry doesn't really Make Sense. It's emotional and reactionary#better bones au

three just karate aikido-dropped three security guards and honestly id like to see some other doctors get into a fist fight occasionally, i wonder how they'd do
#doctor who#dw#im watching classic who#im watching the green death#im watching the third doctor#one woul feign a knee injury and then chop someone in the throat when they came over all worried#two would do silly flappy hands and be generally useless -- that or smack someone over the head with his flute#four would fight so dirty but also so badly -- hairpulling expected#five would espouse being above this and then kneecap someone with a cricket bat#im torn between six or seven as most likely to commit an actual murder based on what ive seen of them#but definitely six would throw an actual hard punch square in someone's face + scratch and claw#while seven of course uses a cane to devastating effect (with a bit of one and four tactics)#eight would be useless in a fight in the movie but far more capable later on BUT i think also least likely to fight someone physically#nine is a bitch-slapper ive decided. she's actually very unhappy with the idea of a proper fight but a humiliating slap yes#ten WOULD fight but would also lose and spit blood while acting like they're winning#eleven also does flappy hands but far more effectively than two and when you're not taking him seriously punches you in the face#twelve i think is most likely to win an honest fight through old-school fisticuffs but on top of that is also a bastard cheater#thirteen ive decided is most likely to have remembered some of three's martial arts but silly style -- gets halfway through a correct move#fucks something up and says *hold on i swear i used to remember this stuff now is it over the hip or shoulder...* before getting knocked ou#fourteen from what we've seen so far holds up their hands going *now wait a second-* and immediately gets knocked out

Finally watched Repo! after having listened to the sountrack for an entire decade and like.....I really wouldn't call it a good movie but I think it would've altered my entire brain chemistry if I had watched it in high school
#also nathan my guy#you didn't have to actually poison your daughter#i mean he shouldn't have locked up his kid in the first place obviously but I think if you're going to commit to the bit#you don't have to go the extra mile and ACTUALLY poison your kid????#like...you already locked her away from the outside world she's not going to know she's not actually sick anyway????

i like bad special effects. meaning not just old and outdated (which in a lot of cases were actually groundbreaking for their time, but i digress) but also low-budget or rushed or just kinda corny and poorly executed. i think it adds charm where a lot of more polished productions are lacking.
#i don't think this is a particularly hot take on this website#i think a lot of us here also appreciate special effects that are either outdated but were brilliant at the time#or are just flat-out bad by any standard but still enjoyable in a campy way#but like. when the untamed was popular on here i saw a lot of people saying like 'just ignore the bad special effects lol'#when personally i ADORED the special effects in that show#up to and including the shitty animatronic dog lmao#i think they really added something to the atmosphere and the melodrama of it all#and slicker special effects would've made it a worse show.#feels a bit more like you're watching a stage play if you can peek around the curtain in this way#which is very fitting for the sort of show it is! it's very theatrical and dramatic and everything is a big fucking deal!#and you have to make the active choice to suspend your disbelief and get invested#in the idea that this flagrantly fake dog puppet is scary#it's sort of like i'm being asked to collaborate in the story i guess?#if the sfx isn't perfect then my conscious participation is necessary to make it land#so the overall result feels more personal and meaningful because i had to commit to it

step 1 of watching suits: haha fun plot! look at this little guy pretending to be a law school graduate. yeah this won't have any consequences whatsoever
step 2 of watching suits: oh this little guy and that bigshot lawyer have some good chemistry. yeah they're both committing a crime by having him work at this new york big law firm but it's fun :)
step 3 of watching suits: they're actually facing consequences to their actions now, but oh god i don't want to see either of them lose. yes, they did something terrible but don't we all want to feel a bit special. don't we all feel stuck. doesn't our own ambition swallow us whole. don't we feel insanely loyal to the person who gave us everything. we're going down together. if you go, i go.
#caroline watches tv#suits#anyways. biting them. shaking them.#staring at the characters and laughing nervously because yes i know that they're doing awful things#but also i feel so much for them#i do feel quite a bit for mike because it's like. that frustration of knowing you could have been someone but then something happened#and you were shunted out of a life that you always wanted to have. and you're scrambling to get it back. you're trying so hard.#and when someone presents it to you on a silver platter. yeah you're gonna take it.#and also like. harvey.#like. yes he's morally grey or morally bankrupt (depending on who you ask) but it's like. you're this giant of an attorney who never loses#and you recruit this guy who you know is lying but you're never going to give up on him. you don't want anyone to leave you but you also#don't know how to ask anyone to stay.#which isn't much of an excuse for like. helping commit fraud.#but also. harvey can pretend he doesn't need anyone but the most pathetic truth is that he needs people so badly#and he has no idea what to do with that.#and tbh. i think when he saw mike. he saw a glimmer of something real and earnest and immediately decided to keep him.#and there's so much irony in that? the most genuine person he's ever known is also someone who's going to defraud an entire law firm#something tragic about that but also something so intriguing. anyways i'm normal about this show#i'm normal about them. etc.
