“Thank you for inviting me, Jimmy! And for the food!”

“No problem! Figured it was the least I could do after the flight here, um…so y/n your career has always been eventful but it's currently exploding right now and everyone’s talking about Y/N L/N and so I wanted to show you this photo and tell me if you remember how growing up in figure skating was” [shows a picture of younger y/n in her first competition]

“Oh….this was when I was 12, I had just started competing after begging my mother to sign me up for a skating academy for like a whole year [laughter]”

“Did you win this competition?”

“No [laughs] I got like fourth place and was convinced I wasn’t made out to be a skater and went home that night and cried the most i’ve ever cried I think”

“Wow, here’s you like what..six competitions later and look you’ve got a gold medal” {shows a different picture of her on the podium with a bright smile] [insert cheers and laughter] “I’m so happy for you, what did it feel like?”

“Um, well it felt like I was right all along, that my mom and coach were right and it just gave me a huge boost in confidence after that”

“And- I mean- look at you now two time olympic champion back to back, that is amazing- absolutely amazing. Uh- a little birdie told me that when you first signed with Team USA- um you were in a Chick-Fil-A drive thru when you got the call”

[laughter] “Um..yeah! I was actually at work- um, i worked in a chick-fil-a like ten minutes down the street from my house and I got the call from the recruiter and I was like “oh god, I can’t be on my phone at work but I have to take this…screw it” and i picked up the phone and if you ever watched the draft for the nba then it’s kind of like that, I remember I squealed and dropped to the floor as I accepted and I just could not shut up about it for the rest of the day”

[laughter] “yeah well that must’ve been an amazing feeling! To know your accomplishments have been recognized and that you were about to go to the big leagues”

“Oh yeah, I was riding on that high for like a week, it felt like- yeah- i did it. I mean, I felt like I kind of made it already when I won the rest of my competitions growing up but that call was the little cherry on top, you know? I was 18 years old at the time of the phone call, just out of high school but then it was like a massive dump where I was unsure of myself and if I really was that good. Hate really got to my heart during that time, I had already reviewed a large amount of misogyny that I had almost given up too many times to count”

“I had to push myself and remember why I was there, first and foremost my passion for the ice, and I wasn’t going to toss away my dream due to bigoted men around me. They wanted to see me fail and I wasn’t going to let them succeed”

“Beautifully said. I know recently a few fans have reacted poorly after the results of the most recent grand prix in Austria..how do you feel about that?”

“Well um, I get that they're mad, you know? No one wants to see a driver forced out of a race following a collision but again, I had nothing to do with that, you know? [laughter] Um..just because I’m dating Max does not give them that excuse but again, there will always be haters and so I do what I do best and ignore them the best I can; I know not everyone can respond maturely and things can be said in the heat of the moment so I try not to hold it against them”

“Right, well what are your plans for the future? Is another championship in the cards? Another career even? Maybe a more serious relationship outcome with Max?”

[laughter] “Um well figure skating is definitely the dream, you know, a lot of people will say I’m too old to be on the rink but frankly, there is no maximum age to figure skating, i’ll retire of course when I’m ready but um, that’s no time soon [laughter] um growing up I was really into psychology. Obviously as an athlete I know the importance of mental health and how it can truly affect your performance and career but I was obsessed growing up, probably from all the late night reruns of crime shows like law and order and 48 hours {laughter}’

“and um I don’t know about the last one, we haven’t really talked about anything like that, I think we both enjoy our lives together but i wouldn’t be opposed to any sort of change”

“Great! Well um, Max if your watching, there’s your sign right there [laughter] um…I googled you today to see what pops up and um..”

“Did you not know who I was beforehand?”

“No [laughter] no- i can do..I know all your poses and I can do it”

“Oh can you?”

“I can do it, no- no I just wanted to see what pops up and it says did you mean: ice queen or ice princess and I think that’s kind of fun, tell us about that”

“Um, I definitely didn’t do that- I guess someone at google loves me or something [laughter] but the nicknames ice queen or princess is from the 2018 Olympics when I won my first championship and that day I was wearing a white and silver costume that I was absolutely shivering in [laughter] but um- yeah, the judges and everyone liked it so much and I think the name came from one the judge's comments on my performance actually and everyone just ran with it and i liked it so much that I kept it [laughter]”

“Can I just tell everyone some of the stats you have right now, because wow. You are currently the highest paid figure skater at a net worth of 90 Million dollars. You are a 5 time US champion from 2011 to 2016 and 6 time World Champion from 2017 and 2023, you have countless endorsements with brands such as Disney, McDonald’s, Starbucks, Visa, Campbell’s Chevrolet, Coca-Cola, Kraft, and United Airlines. You’ve been given the James E. Sullivan Award for ‘Best Amateur Athlete, U.S. Olympic Committee ‘Sportswoman of the Year’, Readers’ Choice ‘Figure Skater of the Year’, Teen Choice Award and ‘Cosmogirl of the Year’” [takes in a deep breath] “phew…that was a lot to read [laughter] but yeah, that is all you’ve done since you were 12, that’s amazing!”

What did Martha think of John?

She loved him so much, like from the beginning. The thing is, sometimes she wasn’t very sure of John’s love to her because he could be very “strict” and those kind of rules made her feel very bad. For her, the change to a much more tender setting was very sudden. John started to be more candid with her and she felt that he was one of her best friends. But still, she would doubt about his motives (it was because he was with Paul?). Then the cards showed me how sad she was when she couldn’t see more of John 😢. And that’s how it ends.

What did Martha think of Paul?

He is a prince! And I’m going to give him the best treatment!

It was like genuinely she wanted to give him her best, in a very lovely and tender way, but sometimes she would feel deceived about how Paul would treat her back. It was like he didn’t do the same effort. But anyways, she still tried her best to give everything to him. Sometimes she would think it was very difficult, that it was like impossible to give everything to Paul. Something was missing! And it was like she had so many ideas on how to make it happen, but stupid Paul would sabotage taking drugs or whatever 😭. She was almost like a mother sometimes. WHAT ARE YOU DOING PAUL?! That kind of moments made her sad, and it was worse when Paul didn’t care. Martha really was waiting for Paul to settle and have someone, it was too much 😭🤣.

What did Martha think about John and Paul?

She was jealous. It was like - What are you two doing?!

She knew that this was good. I mean, Paul felt good. It seemed that John liked Paul but she wasn’t very sure about that. She wanted to protect Paul, even when Paul would tell her to shut up or something like that it was like she was very worried about what would happen, and also believed that it wouldn’t be enough for Paul. Even when things would be better, and John would show up very loving at their door, it was like Martha wasn’t 100% convinced of this.

Why Martha was so worried about this relationship?

Martha could see that they loved each other a lot, but it was like happiness would be very difficult to reach. And also, it was like suddenly the relationship was having more and more chaotic energy. And would be arguing passionately or doing very crazy shit from one time and another and then would be like nothing happened and for Martha was like REALLY BITCH?! She didn’t like that very much. Also, they would be partying (and/or distracting?) and wouldn’t give her attention (or the attention that she would’ve like to have) so it was kind of stressful. But she knew they loved each other and were happy, so she tried to understand.

What did Martha think of the Apple Scruffs?

I think when it was time to be with them she didn’t like it very much. But probably Paul told her to follow their instructions and be obedient with them and she would have to accept those conditions even when she didn’t like them at all. She knew that Paul would be able to do his shit while she was out of the house and probably would be happier too (😭). She would have to keep up with these people anyway and they actually would be kind of nice, but she wouldn’t want to be with them. She preferred to be back home.

And he knew slavery was messy, and horrific, and that many in that line would've begged him to do the same to them, if they'd had the chance, the choice, but... a man so filled with regret, with misery, so desperate, so guilty... It forced him to consider every option.

To pain himself further with every thought. Like he deserved.

It forced him to consider that you may be right. He may just be a monster.

But what else could he have done?

aaaaa i'm sorry, i should have been specific about the kind of question, it's more related to coming out than bisexuality specifically now that i think about it >.<

i've been identifying as a lesbian for years and for a while now i've been feeling like maybe i'm actually bi but i'm honestly terrified of exploring that and i don't know what to do. every time i try to think it through i get so stressed out that i start to cry because i have a lot of feelings and experiences that feel so hard to sort out but at the same time i know i can't keep pretending forever. the hardest thing is that i've felt my attraction swing so strongly in the other direction after feeling nothing about men for years and it's making me so sad and disgusted with myself. it's i've been sitting on this all year and it's really starting to take a toll on me now that i realized it's almost 2024 and i'm still lying to everyone about this. i was hoping if it's not too much to ask you might be able to give me some advice on how you navigated this bc you seem so confident and i feel really lost and anxious since i can't talk to anyone i know in real life about it. i know that this is a lot so please feel free to ignore it if you don't want to answer, thank you so much for reading whether you decide to answer or not

Firstly a big hug to you, I'm sorry you've been in so much emotional pain and that you have felt isolated in all this 😢🫂 I know that when you're in that place, it can feel like such a big deal even just to say "I'm hurting in this way" to another person, so I'm really touched you came to me 💙

My biggest piece of advice to you would be to do your best to move away from the question of "what am I really?" and towards the question "what do I want?" It's been my experience that approaching questions of sexuality as though there's some fixed, immutable truth to your sexual identity that is just waiting there for you to uncover is little more than a painful, drawn-out exercise in making yourself miserable. That's exactly what I did when I first came out at 20, and if I could change anything about my life, it would be to not quite literally lock myself in my room for weeks doing nothing but dissecting my life and over-intellectualizing my feelings in an attempt figure all that out. Sure I came out of it with some kind of answer, but the experience left me horrifically depressed and destroyed my self worth, and it took a long time to bounce back from that - especially since I felt a lot of shame about the state I was in, and I couldn't bring myself tell anyone else about what had brought it about.

I mention all that because what I see in your message is that you are being similarly hard on yourself, and I want you to know that there is a much healthier way to approach this that will hopefully leave you feeling more comfortable, confident, and in control. Shifting the question to "what do I want?" allows you to consciously dictate the terms of the process instead of getting overwhelmed by your anxieties. It takes your fear out of the driver's seat and puts you firmly in it.

What do you want? What makes you happy? What do you value? What aspects of you and your life do you treasure, what do you want to cultivate, what would be best left behind? What would you do if there were no limits on you? At the end of your life, what do you want to be able to say about how you lived your life?

These are big, essential questions, ones we unfortunately don't often get the space to take a step back and thoughtfully consider our answers to as we deal with juggling school, work, and adult life and obligations. One benefit to being in a state of questioning is that you have already created the space to ask big questions about yourself. Why not broaden the scope a bit? Instead of just asking questions about who you are, these questions give you the space to holistically figure out who you want to be.

You wanted to know how I navigated this — that's how! I didn't want to put myself through what I experienced at 20 again. I asked myself these questions and they helped me understand that if I wanted to act in line with my adult priorities, I needed to let go a bit, give myself the permission to make a change in order to keep growing into the person I want to be. I won't get into all the specifics but it helped a lot to concretely articulate certain things to myself, such as "sex & sexuality are important to how I understand myself and my gender" and "it's more important to me to have the freedom to do the things I want and need to than it is for others to understand them." It helped me establish my own rules of engagement with the sexual identity question so I could make that process a helpful one for me instead of something deeply destabilizing.

Take a deep breath — you are in control here, you are the boss of you. I completely understand how overwhelmed and lonely you must be feeling. Along with re-shifting your focus, I suggest that you find some outlet for those feelings, whether it's a forum or server where you can talk to other people who are in the same boat, journaling, moving your body in a way that's enjoyable for you, playing a game, making something, anything that helps ground you. Even finding a place where you can just say "I feel overwhelmed" without having to get into specifics can help alleviate some of that stress. People will be here for you if you let them know you're hurting, even if you're not ready or aren't able to give them the details.

Lots of love to you. I know you can move forward in a healthier way, some days will be better than others, what's important is that we remember to give ourselves grace through all the emotional ups and downs. I hope this helps a little bit 🫂💙

TC reread chapter 3, some thoughts

(Be warned: if you like Andrew, it’s best to just ignore this post and keep scrolling. I’m not a fan of this character and I don’t hold back on my opinions here)

Both Laurie and Ralph started their careers at the bottom of the army & merchant navy hierarchies despite having an “educated” accent. Another similarity and shared experience!

When Laurie asks to see his x-rays, the charge-nurse replied “I know what you are, reading your notes and getting half-baked ideas. Shakespeare says a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.” This reminds me of Ralph’s story about Alec admonishing him for reading medical anatomy books. No wonder Laurie’s like: there’s nothing wrong with that 😤😤😤

“No one discussed what he had really felt; they took it out on other things.” Yep. True for like everyone in this entire book 😂

Poor Laurie, fighting the drugs because he nearly outed himself on that ship when he was drugged out of his mind, called Ralph a “dearie” and turned him down with a flirty smile 😏 (I wonder if he ever decides to call Ralph “dearie” again, perhaps while they are on holiday, lying on the deck of a little sailboat? “Yes dearie, I’m ready this time” 🤗)

Also, Laurie remembers finding Ralph’s concern for him on the ship “very flattering” and “reflected that he [Laurie] was filthy and unshaved”, and thus proposes “some other time” 😏👀 Like, Ralph is hovering over him, desperately hoping he might still make it out alive, and Laurie is lying there, casually revealing that he’s been considering the bearded man in front of his as a potential lover and decided that he can’t do it now because he hasn’t shaved yet and his leg is a mess 😅 (but also, an early hint that Laurie will be hesitant to date Ralph because he is afraid of being not good enough for Ralph 😭😭😭)

Love the water = queerness metaphor in this book. Laurie the champion swimmer, not wanting to swim because it is not allowed 😭

And after the surgery, Laurie is doped out of his mind, all inhibitions removed. The first we see this happen, he thinks about sex with the bearded captain (Ralph), the second time we hear about this, he recites queer poetry and invites a nurse to bed, and now he is rambling to Nurse Adrian about how “there was a man at school” with whom things would have been different from his failed relationship with Charles. Laurie’s horny-ness for Ralph is so sweet 🥹. And then telling her “it was all wrong the way they treated him” 😭😭😭

“Exit a quiet tidy patient […] enter, somewhere else, a young man with a lame leg and an unanswered question. Vital statistics have this new character something like fifty years’ expectation of life.” I like to imagine that with the stability of Ralph’s love, care, and companionship, Laurie will live to a ripe old age 💪

Laurie makes up a whole life story for Nurse Adrian, “bumpy tennis court […] a wire-haired terrier you couldn’t show” all based on her “schoolroom smile”. I write her as a repressed lesbian in one of my WIPs 😅😅😅

I love how Laurie gives Sandy a flirty smile out of pure boredom. He obviously delights in the expressing his queerness and in casually flirting with another man (as long as there are no social consequences for him)! Hilarious how he convinces himself later that he can live a chaste life. If Laurie had become a sailor like Ralph, he would absolutely go cruising in bars in foreign ports and pick up men with that dazzling smile of his. (Omg perhaps in an AU where it is Laurie who has an affair with Hazel and gets expelled….)

Also Laurie, just because you are masc4masc does not mean you can look down upon femme folks 😤😤😤

Poor Laurie crying under the covers after hearing Major Ferguson’s discussion with the visiting surgeon and understanding that he’ll be disabled forever: “Then he slipped down in bed […] soon he was able to blot his eyes on the sheet and come to the surface again” 😢

“You know, my father wasn’t faithful to my mother.” Thinking about Laurie’s abandonment trauma, and his tendency to abandon ppl before they can abandon him: Andrew prolly seemed like a “safe” choice because he seems to have no romantic prospects (he doesn’t even seem to have any close friends except Laurie). Meanwhile Ralph is popular in the queer community, he seems to have lots of romantic prospects, so Laurie felt like Ralph didn’t really need him for emotional & romantic fulfillment (until he read the suicide letter). After all, like Madge, he “was one of those that know what a man needs.”

Ugggghhhhh the book is so boring without Ralph 😩😩😩…..two more chapters to go….😫😫😫

“It was Nurse Adrian […] he felt at once that it was she all the time whom he had really wanted […] she had none of that awful knowingness; one could take one’s time with her, hesitate, and she would only be grateful.” She is innocent of queerness, has nice hands, fair hair, and BLUE eyes, and Laurie helps her with the washing up in the kitchen in the evening 👀. It’s a little sad how Laurie just replaces her with Andrew and abandons their budding friendship once he has found an equally innocent and Ralph-looking male version of her.

Also, I think the 1953 version of this chapter makes it more clear that Laurie feels very terrible and guilty about having killed people in the war. That is why he thinks it’ll be “embarrassing” to meet the C.O.s, whose hands are “clean” of blood. It is a crude metaphor, but both Laurie and Ralph have participated in both queerness and the killing, while Andrew has declared himself morally above acting upon queerness and killing Nazis. Although he “dirtied” his hands for a good cause, Laurie is feeling very down-beaten and guilty after Dunkirk, so it’s quite understandable that Andrew’s “clean” moral position seems quite aspirational and superior.

But I don’t find Andrew any more virtuous than the other characters in the novel. His moral “cleanliness” from standing above the violence is basically non-interference, doing nothing as people suffer. This doesn’t make him more virtuous or morally superior to those who were willing to get their hands dirty to take a stand against fascism. I think choosing pacifism when your country is under attack is really just choosing to escape into an illusion: the pacifist’s hands are clean indeed, but his boots are drenched in the blood of those who died because of his inaction.

Laurie and Andrew’s interactions are such fertile ground for finding Ralph/Laurie clues 🔎, like Andrew wearing a grey flannel shirt on the day Laurie first sees him. Ralph was also wearing grey flannel when they kissed in the study, on the last day Laurie saw him. And we later learn from the old photograph of Ralph that it was love at first with Andrew because Laurie recognized 19 year old Ralph in his appearance.

“The brush with Willis had fortified Laurie’s self-confidence.” Andrew’s social vulnerability and inexperience gives Laurie ample opportunity to provide protection and guidance. Like Ralph, he needs to be needed. He especially needs this ego-boost after losing both the war and his leg.

I know I’ve said this many times in the past, but I find it so telling that Laurie is jealous of the much older Dave for being Andrew’s mentor & father-figure, rather than any of the young Quakers, who’d make more reasonable romantic prospects for Andrew. He doesn’t want to be Andrew’s partner or equal, he wants to replace Dave as Andrew’s pederastic mentor.

In the 1953 edition I’m reading, Andrew whistles the Enchanter’s Theme from Swan Lake after Laurie mentions Tchaikovsky. The enchanter makes the protagonist mistake the black swan, the impersonator, for the white swan, his true love. Similarly here, Laurie does not realize that his sense of deja vu & love at first sight is because Andrew resembles Ralph, his true love.

The meeting with Andrew reminded me of that Twitter meme about how there are two kinds of ppl you’ll meet: those who are kind to you and those who are nice to you. Nice people are polite and considerate about all the little things, but unwilling to make any kind of personal sacrifice to help you when push comes to shove. Kind people may be a little blunt and severe when you first meet them, but genuinely care about your wellbeing and are willing to go through a lot of trouble to help you.

Laurie and Andrew are nice to each other, while Laurie and Ralph are kind to each other. Laurie will do anything for Ralph, once he knows what Ralph needs from him, but cannot ultimately bring himself to disavow his emotional truth & love for Ralph to let Andrew have his cake and eat it too. Ralph, however, is willing to sacrifice his dignity and happiness to give Laurie what he wants, while Andrew is unwilling to compromise his pride and moral dogmatism to understand and fulfill Laurie’s emotional needs.

Also, I will go into it in more detail once I get to chapter 15, but Andrew’s final letter to Laurie is rather rude and presumptuous. He thinks he can ask Laurie to disavow his love for Ralph and his own emotional truth, without offering Laurie anything in return, not even a continuation of their chaste friendship. Fuck off!

(This reminds me: I should write a fic where an older Laurie digs out Andrew’s letter from a box of his old things, reads it, and is like: “oh dear! I’m so glad he broke up with me. Saved me from so much future heartache. And now I have Ralph 🥰”)

Woah. Okay. I honestly don’t know that I’ll ever be able to watch that episode again in it’s entirety. There were many things I loved about it, but also things that I didn’t. And whilst I felt the same about many other episodes, I did expect more for the season finale. Why did him leaving seem to everyone like they were never going to talk again?? Did they all agree to never stay in contact??

But I do know that it didn’t ruin the show as a whole for me 👍🏼 I’ll just stay living in my delusional TedBecca fantasy land they built for me 😉

Contemplating 07/12/24

So twice yesterday two separate places were screaming “therapy” and then someone post the word “contemplating” and it was like wooooow.

I understand that what Andrew, Cody and Jake did to me was impactful on my self worth and brain function. God has helped me so far. I’ve been learning how to grow my hair back and get my digestive health under control. I found a good magnesium citrate supplement that’s helping with that 🙏🏻 I don’t know anyone personally who has ever done therapy, so I can give no advice there. However, I would say to just be careful who you talk to and what advice they give you. Counseling I’m sure can be good if it’s from a good source. I haven’t opened back up to my husband, since he had to threaten Andrew to leave me alone becuase I don’t think he’ll understand truly what emotional abuse is and I don’t want him to make me feel bad for it. I think he wouldn’t purposely want me to feel bad, he just maybe wouldn’t know what to tell me. So I’m being choosy in who I talk to these days. Altho if the door opened, I would try to speak up to my husband.

I’ve never understood “trauma” growing up cuz I didn’t think I ever experienced such a thing until this past year, especially after I fell at Christmas off the ladder putting up lights. That fall was quick but hard. The initial fall didn’t hurt. It was afterwards, when I’m left sore and covered in bruises 😢😢 that’s EXACTLY how it felt with Cody and Andrew. The actual abuse wasn’t painful. It was after they betrayed me and broke my heart, then I felt the pain and was left with deep wounds. After Cody ghosted me, wow…. I kept seeing a “zipper” being zipped up anytime I would try to pray and my mom says, “sounds like you need closure” and that’s ALL she said, she didn’t ask me questions and I did NOT tell her or anyone close to me about Cody. 🥺 I kept him a complete secret and yet he left this big gaping hole inside my heart that wouldn’t ever close up and I didn’t know why. 😓

Yesterday I read the famous verse and quote about love: “Love is long suffering, it’s kind, it’s not jealous or puffed up.” Wow ❤️‍🩹🙏🏻 I have suffered long for Cody and Andrew. I don’t hate them and yet they abused love…. I AM working so tirelessly to forgive them. I’ve not been seeking any revenge on them. I’m simply sad for them. Sad for myself too. They made love out as a selfish and evil game. Yesterday I posted about how I believed love had healing power but some reason my love didn’t seem like it affected cody or Andrew. Yeah, they’re manipulators and so they’re bad company to be around. I realize that now. I STILL believe in love. ❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹 even when I can’t “feel it” or “see it”. Andrew and Cody did NOT steal my love away or the ability to have it. They will NOT get revenge or anger from me. They’ll only get healthy anger from me. I want them to be better men ❤️‍🩹 I will pray and wish them well. I will let them live their lives in peace. I will not reach out to them or react in abuse back to them.

Will I ever be able to forget how much I loved them two? Probably not. Cuz my love was real and legit. I do believe each day, I’m another step closer to stop hurting over them and healing these deep wounds. I wanna be able to show my loved ones just how powerful love, forgiveness and healing really is. ❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹 all my life I’ve felt stupid because school labeled me 😭 I wanna show off just how powerful overcoming labels are!!
