Nach zwölf Jahren des Spielens seines liebsten MMORPGs loggt sich Momonga ein letztes Mal ein und findet sich plötzlich dauerhaft in der Welt des Spiels wieder. Auf seinen Abenteuern steigt sein Avatar zum Titel des Magierkönigs Ains Ooal Gown (Satoshi Hino) auf. Das Heilige Königreich, einst wohlhabend, aber nun am Rande des Ruins, hatte dank einer riesigen Mauer, die sie vor Invasionen der Nachbarn schützte, lange Zeit Frieden. Doch eines Tages endet dieser Frieden, als der Dämonenkaiser Jaldabaoth mit einer Armee von finsteren Halbmenschen auftaucht. Aus Angst vor einer eigenen Invasion sieht sich das benachbarte Gebiet der Theokratie von Slane gezwungen, ihre Feinde, das Magierkönigreich, um Hilfe zu bitten. Ains Ooal Gown, jetzt als Magierkönig bekannt, folgt dem Ruf und führt das Magierkönigreich und seine Armee der Untoten in den Kampf, um gemeinsam mit dem Heiligen Königreich und der Theokratie von Slane den Dämonenkaiser zu besiegen.

Mini-review:

Well, color me surprised. I had seen a lot of love for this drama on social media, but for some reason I didn't expect it to be an actual candidate for drama of the year. The writing is as sensitive as it gets, portraying important social issues with a carefulness that J-dramas tend to lack. The directing and the visuals are also fantastic, helping the story reach the next level. And, of course, this cast is just sublime, one acting masterclass after another. I guess the character of Michito might be a point of contention, cause he does fall into a lot of stereotypes, but I think his arc is incredibly beautiful and powerful. And, from a technical point of view, Ryota Bando's performance is an absolute marvel and some of the best acting I've ever seen in a J-drama. But, at the end of the day, the most important thing is that Light of My Lion made me feel so much, like all of my favorite dramas of all time. I will never forget the time I spent with this family.
