Am I a fairy or...? and 紡ぐ日常(メロディー) lyrics translation
Am I a fairy or...?
I am I-ai- [Romaji] "Boku wa yousei da…" to kidzuite shimatta hi Hito to chigau koto nanka yori mune ni omou koto ga "Takara mono" wo mamoru sono tame ni tsuita hane Hito to chigau kono sugata ga hokori ni omoetanda Ikiru imi ga arutte chikara ga afureru Zutto zutto issho da yo to kimeta hazu datta no ni Owakarette sa… itsumo kyuu dane Totsuzen paatto hirogaru sekai kaze ni hane ga oitsukenai Kanashiku nai nante aru mono ka kowasa de furue ga tomaranai Mamotteita to omotteta demo mamoraretetan da ne Sono tsuyosa wo shiritai kara sayonara wo iunda I am ai Hajimete no keshiki wa kosei ga afuretete Hito to chigatte yokattatte oshiete kuretanda Hana no iro, tenki yohou, kodomo no egao mo Mainichi, mainichi, kotonaru koto de Chikyuu wa hanayaka ni irodotte mawari tsudzukeru "Yaritai koto ga dekitanda" to mune wo hatte utau tame ni Namida wo fuite tabi ni deyou sore ga doshaburi na ame demo Yagate kitto deau darou ai wo tsutaerubeki hito Mada na mo shiranu kimi he to kisu wo ageru tame ni I just wish you Asu no tame ni kyou wo kako ni shite Atarashii doa wo hiraki yume wo kakageyou Soshite mugen ni hirogaru mirai kaze ni hane wo yorokobu darou Jibun jishin wo shinjiyukou kowasa mo zenbu dakishimete Chousen wo shitsudzukereba kamisama wa hohoemu sa Jibun ga houseki ni nare boku wa boku to sakebu I am ai [English] The day I realized that "I'm a fairy…" It's because of what I feel in my heart rather than being different from others These wings that are attached here to protect "my treasures" I felt proud of this look (role) of mine that was different from others My power overflows knowing that there's meaning of life Even though we've decided we'd always be together forever Farewells are always so sudden, aren't they… The world suddenly expands in a flash, and my wings can't keep up with the wind There's no way I'm not feeling sad, I'm so scared that I can't stop trembling in fear I thought I was the one protecting you, but I was the one who got protected instead, didn't I? I want to know that strength of yours, so I bid my farewell (thanks) to you I am I (Ai) The scenery I saw for the first time, overflows with my own individuality It told me how glad I am that I'm different from others The color of the flowers, the weather forecast, and the children's smiles They all can be different every single day The earth continues to rotate in brilliant colors So that I can proudly sing, “I was able to do what I wanted to do” Let's wipe our tears and go on a journey, even if it's in a pouring rain I'm sure that someday I'll meet them, someone who I'll convey my love for To give a kiss to you, whose name I haven't known yet I just wish you Let the past be the past for the sake of tomorrow Open the new door and pursue our dreams And then, my wings will rejoice in the wind as the future expands to infinity. Let's believe in ourselves and embrace all of our fears As long as you keep trying, the God will smile upon you. Turning myself into a jewel, I'll shout that "I am me" I am I (Ai)

It's because I'm with you that I came to know How this precious day become so colorful These illogical feelings that you can't understand Just from data alone are kinda nice I (LaLa…) want (LaLa…) To wipe away your tears forever… Let's live our life as we want I'm sure you can do anything, so try to take a step forward I believe that you're the only one who can change your own world It's eaiser said than done, you say? I'm telling you the truth! C'mon, say it Look, don't you feel like you can do anything now? (Don't you?) I would've never seen it if it's not for you How this new dream would come to life "Do you think we could catch the white clouds if we reach out our hands?" Seeing your smile made me laughed alongside you Please don't forget that I'm here with you Let's overlap the spinning melody (of our daily life) Singing in unison, through lonely and happy times There's a meaning when we sing together More… It's because I'm with you that I came to know How this precious day become so colorful These illogical feelings that you can't understand Just from data alone are kinda nice There's (LaLa…) only (LaLa…) One reason why I can continue to be myself So that I could live alongside you Let's create more special memories Now, let's sing along together Let me hear your voice LaLa… LaLa… LaLaLaLaLa… LaLa… LaLa…

28.12. New Year's Dishes
Today is the last business day of the year (at least, it was in 2021 😉). What do you need to do in the office or at home? Choose four answers ⬇️
Tumblr media
Answer and Translation
A. You decorate the kadomatsu.
B. You greet your boss, colleagues and acquaintances with "Happy New Year" and "Please take care of me next year as well."
C. Students do their winter-break homework.
D. You tidy up your office.
E. You start preparing the New Year's dishes.
F. You visit a shintō shrine.
Vocab
門松(かどまつ)traditional Japanese decorations made for the New Year, usually placed in pairs in front of homes and buildings
整頓する(せいとんする)to tidy up; to neaten; to organize
おせち料理(おせちりょうり)traditional New Year's food
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kazunoko (数の子・かずのこ), herring roe. Kazu (数) means "number" and ko (子) means "child", so it symbolizes a wish to have numerous children in the New Year.
Daidai (橙・だいだい), Japanese bitter orange. Daidai also means "from generation to generation" when written 代々. Like kazunoko (数の子), it symbolizes a wish for children in the New Year.
Konbu (昆布・こんぶ), a kind of seaweed. It is associated with the word yorokobu (喜ぶ), meaning "joy", so it symbolizes a joyous New Year.
Tumblr media
Tazukuri (田作り・たずくり), dried sardines cooked in soy sauce. The literal meaning of the kanji in tazukuri is "rice paddy maker", as the fish were used historically to fertilize rice fields, so the dish symbolizes an abundant harvest.
Kōhakunamasu (紅白なます) is made of daikon and carrot cut into thin strips and pickled in sweetened vinegar with yuzu flavor.
Nishikitamago (錦卵/二色玉子・にしきたまご), egg roulade; the egg is separated before cooking, yellow symbolizing gold, and white symbolizing silver, and together symbolizing wealth and good fortune.
Kamaboko (蒲鉾・かまぼこ), broiled fish cake. The red and white colors represent the rising sun, a symbol of Japan, and the semicircular shape of the fish cake symbolizes the first sunrise of the New Year.

Happy New Year! With the kotatsu (table and blanket over an electric heater) out and omochi (pounded rice cakes) secured, it’s time to eat osechi ryori—Japan’s traditional food served during the New Year’s holidays.
Osechi ryori, said to have begun in the Heian era (from 794), is a set of small, traditional dishes served in beautiful three- or four-layered lacquer bento boxes called jubako. Traditionally, it is placed at the center of the table on New Year’s Day and remains there over the next three days. Moreover, it is shared with all family and friends, making it a significant part of the celebration. Interestingly, each item in the tray represents a particular wish for the next year, adding depth to the tradition. To give you an idea, here are 12 typical food items you’ll encounter and their symbolic meanings.
1. Datemaki: Scholarship
2. Kuri-kinton: Wealth
3. Kohaku Kamaboko: Sunrise
4. Kobu-maki: Happiness
5. Kazunoko: Fertility
6. Ebi: Longevity
7. Kuromame: Health
8. Tatsukuri (Gomame): Bounty
9. Renkon: Foreseeable, Good Future
10. Kikuka-Kabu: Celebration & Promotion
11. Gobo: Strength & Stability
12. Tai: Auspiciousness & Celebration
It looks exactly like tamagoyaki (Japanese rolled omelet) but once you taste it you’ll know the difference. Datemaki, the sweet rolled omelet, is mixed with an additional ingredient called hanpen (a fish cake) that makes it much fluffier than tamagoyaki. In the past, Japanese people traditionally rolled out important documents or paintings. Due to its resemblance to the scrolled papers, the dish is said to represent a wish for the development of culture and learning.
Kuri kinton (sweet chestnuts) literally means “golden dango (sweet dumpling) made of chestnuts.” As the color is yellowish-gold, it goes without saying that it represents a wish for wealth and a fruitful new year. You may find it difficult to eat them as they are quite sticky. However, if you have a sweet tooth—keep some of them on your plate.
Kamaboko (boiled fish paste) is most commonly presented as a combination of the colors red and white. The red color is believed to prevent evil spirits, while the white represents purity. Further, the shape of the kamaboko—resembling that of the sun at daybreak—represents the first sunrise of the new year.
The kobu, or kelp, served around seems to have different meanings. The first of which is quite simple. The word “kobu” is a Japanese homonym for “yorokobu,” which means joy and happiness. Kobu also symbolizes many offspring when written as “子生,” a kanji that represents childbirth.
Kazunoko, or herring roe, also uses easy Japanese wordplay. “Kazu” means numbers and “ko” means children. So, kazunoko symbolizes being blessed with many children. Another reason this particular type of fish is used, interestingly, is that herring is called “nishin” in Japanese, but if written with different kanji, it becomes “二親” (“ni shin“), meaning two parents.
Picture a shrimp. It has a bent back and two antennae that look like a long beard, don’t they? Therefore, the ebi (shrimp) on your plate is there to wish you a long life, until you have a bent back and long beard (sorry ladies, that happens). The red color makes the osechi look even more appealing and colorful, but it’s also said that it’s there to scare evil spirits away. Just like its friend kamaboko.
According to Taoism, the color black works as a protection against evil spirits. Moreover, as the word “mame” originally means good health and strength in Japanese, kuromame (black beans) represents a wish to live and work in sound health during the next year.
Translated directly into English, tatsukuri (dried, sweetened baby sardines) means rice farming. But what does sardines have to do with grains and agriculture? Well, a long time ago Japanese farmers used dried sardines as a fertilizer for their rice fields. Its other name, gomame, literally means “50,000 grains of rice” and derives from the fact that sardine fertilizer produced a great harvest of rice. Since then, tatsukuri has been considered as a symbol of good harvest for the next year.
In Buddhism, renkon (lotus root) is considered a plant of purity, as it’s believed to grow in the heavenly pond where the Buddha lived. Lotus root represents a happy future without obstacles. Why? Well, look through the holes in the renkon—you can clearly see the other side without any interference.
Kabu, or turnip, are served in the shape of kiku (chrysanthemum) in osechi ryori. The chrysanthemum is the Japanese national flower and is often associated with traditional festivities and celebrations (as well as the imperial family). There is also a belief from China that it drives away evil and allows you to live longer.
Gobo (burdock root) takes a while to cut down and it’s exactly this characteristic that landed it on the osechi dish. Just like those roots that grow so firmly in the soil, burdock symbolizes hope for a life of strength and stability and a life of physical strength. In other words: eat this at New Year’s and nothing can bring you down.
Tai, or sea bream, is a fish for celebration in Japan. A play on words, it derives from medetai, meaning “to celebrate.” The fish is eaten when a child is born or at weddings in the hope of prosperity and happiness. Make a wish as you remove those bones…

Shiawase no Tame ni Ikiteiru dake sa / I Live for Happiness
Welp, I'm (not yet really) back from the dead just for this! It's been such a long time since I last posted here (and actually translated something HAHA) (edit: WOW MY LAST POST HERE WAS MORE THAN A YEAR AGO WHAT). I've been real busy with real life - work, work, and did I say work? :(( I miss having lots of time HAHA ;_; also, life update - I took the JLPT N4 exam last December and passed woo thus the inactivity here :))
ANYWAY, enough of me. Let's talk about this song. This song was so beautiful, so heartfelt, it brought me out of depression inactivity. God they did it again: Yanagi's lyrics, together with Buyan's emotional vocals in this song - just hit me so hard I was CRYING HARD after listening to this the first time :(( The words they used in the song may be mostly simple (and I love it so much because it makes translating relatively easier - but definitely STILL NOT EASY), but the message was so so so meaningful. Especially the whole second verse + second pre-chorus where they speak about how we try to understand ourselves and the people around us better. If we try to understand people without understanding/knowing ourselves first, then we're more likely to hurt the other people because we'd only be showing them someone who isn't the real us just to ~please~ them. We can't become someone else just to conform, but we are all beautifully unique, and no matter our differences, we all deserve the true happiness that we all strive for.
Aaahhhhhh idk I feel like this is a ~sequel~ to Shiawase HAHAHA this is now my second most fave song from Super Beaver fr fr :(((
ANYHOO TRANSLATION BELOW MAY OR MAY NOT BE ACCURATE WILL PROBABLY HAVE MISTAKES ALSO MOST OF THESE ARE BASED ON MY OWN UNDERSTANDING OF THE CONTEXT OF THE WHOLE SONG SO please do tell if misunderstood anything or whatever (I may have passed N4 but my Japanese is still wonky, especially my translation because whoooooo)

It's not ordinary In each one of us, there's just one thing Just a single loneliness that exists We hide those tears, and then move forward Only the self knows the reason for that (loneliness)
Endless nights may not exist, but even then There are times I wish (some) nights won't end In between tears, a voice seeps out It's something I don't want to fade away
If I could become one thing, It's to be that person who'll shout of love when no one else will
I live just for the sake of happiness These tears caused by the loneliness, I give them up for happiness A heart saved just by seeing the face of someone full of joy That person's the reason why I can get through each night as well It brings everything together, all things begin from here I continue to live just for the sake of such happiness
It's not ordinary There's only one, just one A past that each of us bears on our own The more we (try to) understand each other, the more we get hurt Without understanding the other, we understand ourselves
May it be this or that (kind of person), it's still one's self That self can't become another person Because the self can't be someone else I wonder, what kind of self could it become?
If I could become one thing, It's to be that person who'll shout of love when no one else will
I live just for the sake of happiness
I live just for the sake of happiness These tears caused by the loneliness, I give them up for happiness A heart saved just by seeing the face of someone full of joy That person's the reason why I can get through each night as well It brings everything together, all things begin from here I continue to live just for the sake of happiness I continue to live just to be with you who's full of happiness I continue to live just for the sake of such happiness
I wonder how many times I've been saved by this kind of happiness?
It's not ordinary There's just one person, just one thing To shout aloud with you

Please feel free to use these with due credit or to inform me of mistakes! The official lyrics are hyperlinked in the title.
Kanji, romaji, and notes under “Read More.”
Theater
Once upon a time, somebody told me That we all have a role to play We share what we’re lacking and, Making up for each other, live life in that way If that's the case, should my own blanks Not be filled in by somebody else? Can that "somebody" hear me?
Somebody told somebody else, (1) That this was their own role to play "I say these words out of love, For we all live life in that way” I was glad to see that joyful expression, So I desperately played my part, To the point of forgetting how to even breathe
My childhood backpack was carelessly thrown away In a back alley dumpster Since when did I get into the habit Of worrying about my surroundings even as I smiled? If I could have but a single wish Come true, what I would like Is for this absurd theater to be over
I've been living life the wrong way Now that my collar's been taken off, Where on Earth am I supposed to go? I simply wanted a certain sense of self God above, is this the price I am to pay? All of this, it’s all far too much
Well, never mind that, hurry up And put an end to it

Notes:
While the first line could technically be translated without a subject, that phrasing is what one would use to say somebody told them something. I thought it was interesting in conjunction with the line marked as (1), as the person this is being told to is still the same, and yet it has lost its self and just become a “somebody” now.
