What exactly Hatha yoga actually is hasnโ€™t changed for thousands of years. However our thinking and perception of it certainly has. Language is a powerful thing, and in different cultures the same word can have a variety of definitions. Throughout the evolution of yoga practice, the same word โ€“ Hatha โ€“ has come to mean different things too.
Popular thinking โ€˜in the Westโ€™ (an all-too-common expression now), is that Hatha yoga is about balancing the body and mind. โ€˜Haโ€™ represents the esoteric sun, and โ€˜thaโ€™ the moon. The practice of Hatha yoga aims to join, yoke, or balance these two energies.
A yoga class described as โ€˜Hathaโ€™ will typically involve a set of physical postures (yoga poses) and breathing techniques. These are typically practised more slowly and with more static posture holds than a Vinyasa flow or Ashtanga class. And indeed, that is how we describe our Hatha yoga classes on EkhartYoga.
Literally however, Hatha means โ€˜forceโ€™ and is more traditionally defined as โ€˜the yoga of forceโ€™, or โ€˜the means of attaining a state of yoga through forceโ€™. So Hatha yoga can be considered as anything you might do with the body, including:
asana โ€“ yoga postures (practised in any style of โ€˜yogaโ€™) pranayama โ€“ breathing techniques mantra โ€“ chanting or reciting mudra โ€“ hand gestures shatkriyas and shatkarmas โ€“ cleansing techniques types of visualisation. Mark Singleton โ€“ author of โ€˜Yoga Bodyโ€™, and a Senior Research Fellow at SOAS London University โ€“ spoke at a lecture I attended. He remarked; โ€œwhatโ€™s physical and whatโ€™s not is up for question. Alignment is the term we use in yoga to describe the precise way to do any given pose in order to maximize its benefits and minimize the risk of injury. The ideal, if you will. Now, when you hear words like โ€˜preciseโ€™ and โ€˜idealโ€™, we understand if you start to get freaked out. You might feel like you are being judged by the concept of alignment. After all, arenโ€™t you also being told to listen to your body and to prioritize what it tells you over what any teacher might say? Setu Bandha Sarvangasana
Setu Bandha Sarvangasana is a common pose or asana. It is also called Setu Bandhasana. This is a basic level asana which is also called โ€œBridge Poseโ€ or โ€œUpward-Facing Two-Foot Staff Poseโ€ in English. Its name is derived from three Sanskrit words 'setu', 'bandha', and asana, in which setu means 'bridge' and 'bandha' means 'to tie', and 'asana' means 'posture'. This is because this asana resembles the structure of a bridge.
