Hello, what is goetd super race theory?
In the world of ASOIAF, the Golden Empire of Yi Ti, far to the east, is a pretty blatant expy of China. One of their myths -- and it is only their myth, nobody else's -- is the Great Empire of the Dawn, the legendary empire that preceded their own. The Yi Ti imperial dynasties are named after colors (for example, Lo Tho, Lo Duq, Lo Han, and Lo Bu were Scarlet Emperors), but their mythological ancestors were named after various gemstones. The Great Empire is pretty obviously based on the Chinese myth of the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors, and is perfectly straightforward worldbuilding. There's some interest to current ASOIAF since the end of the Great Empire of the Dawn is connected to Yi Ti's legends of the Long Night, and since the Pearl Emperor established the Five Forts (a historical echo of the Wall and likely serving a similar purpose), but that's about all that's really relevant.
However. Because Dany's dream of her Targaryen ancestors used gemstone colors to describe their eyes, a theory has been built up that the Great Empire of the Dawn was not merely Yi Ti (Chinese) mythology, but the ancestors of Valyrians from millenia ago. According to the theory, this master race also founded House Hightower and House Dayne and thus they look Chinese no wait sorry they're all silver-gold haired and purple eyes except they're not, like you'd think if those particular traits were meant to be relevant for House Hightower they would have been mentioned once in all of ASOIAF (excluding Alerie Hightower, who's in her 40s and thus her silver hair may just be prematurely grey).
I find this theory to unfortunately echo various "master race" elements of Theosophy and Nazi race science, in addition to erasing the actual our-world cultural inspiration of the Great Empire. (This sort of thing is why an artist decided to make the Maiden-Made-of-Light, a Yi Ti goddess, a blonde white girl and based on Selene, instead of, idk, Ameratsu or Doumu.) I really truly dislike the theory and everything connected with it, and the fact that it's all built up over a misreading of one line makes it all the more frustrating to me. Like, I don't care for a particular theory Youtuber for most of his crack nonsense, among other reasons, but this one is especially bad.
Of course, the fact that House Hightower also gets hit with the Citadel-related southron ambitions theory and maester anti-magic conspiracy theory, which do have some standing, but have been blown up by paranoid ASOIAF video theorists on youtube and Tiktok to make them the eugenical secret breeders of all the noble houses and the secret reason for anything bad that ever happened to House Targaryen ever and the manipulators of all historical texts so the only true facts are the ones that put your blorbos in a good light, to the point that I've started calling this paranoia "the Protocols of the Elders of Hightower" -- anyway, the fact the Hightowers have these diametrically opposed fan theories attached to them, is something I'd find hilarious if it didn't depress me so much about fandom. 🤷‍♀️

A Piece of Home (Aemond X Yi Ti OC)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Summary: The emperor Feng of Yi Ti dislikes his daughter Chen's choice for future emperor consort, Aemond Targaryen. At every turn, he is dismissive of his son-in-law but because his daughter is the future empress, he refrains from publicly showing his utter distaste for the Westerosi prince. Chen is keen to make Aemond not feel like an outsider and so allows him to name their first child, the future heir to Yi Ti and emperor Feng is not happy with the name.
Notes: lovely divider by @animatedglittergraphics-n-more , gif credits in the gifs themselves, faceclaim for Princess Chen is actress Zhang Ziyi circa year 2000ish. idk how many words this is but the fic is not too long it's more of a standalone mini fic
EDIT: Now with an epilogue! Faceclaim for Aemond the Younger is Kiyoka from My Happy Marriage (as portrayed by Ren Meguro) and his fiance Mei's faceclaim is of course Miyo (as portrayed by Mio Imada)
Tumblr media
Aemond looked at his sleeping wife, enjoying the view and thinking to himself how different things would be if he had refused.
Tumblr media
He thought he would be miserable in a foreign land.
Yes, his sister the Queen had allowed him to bring a few guards along and his mother had all but foisted Ser Criston upon him as if he were still a lad of one and ten that needed looking after...but never did he anticipate he would genuinely be...well, happy, in an environment that was different in almost every way to King's Landing.
He expected to be shunned and put to the side when he wed the princess Chen, but his new wife constantly asked him "What do you think? How do you feel about this?" concerning important political matters she was overseeing in preparation for becoming empress one day. She always invited him to unofficial engagements, to scout villages near and far, to walk in lush green farmlands overseen by the lords and governors of Yi Ti. Vhagar was certainly happy to carry them both in these travels.
Chen seemed genuinely determined that Aemond should be included and respected in all aspects of his new life. A far cry from his former one.
Now, 8 moons heavy with his child, she had declared to all a fortnight ago that Aemond would decide the babe's name.
Her father, away on royal matters, was most displeased when he received the message and a raven was sent that his Majesty would be arriving today to speak to the princess about the matter.
Aemond was jolted from his thoughts as Chen finally stirred awake.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"I hope you did not lose sleep over that business of our babe's name, my love." Chen said, as maids silently entered the chambers and readied their bath. "Our son or daughter will be named whatever you choose. I have spoken."
"A fact that irritates the emperor to no end." Aemond grumbled, slipping from their bed. He knew he could complain to her and she would not take it as a personal affront. It felt so much better than seething in silence, as he used to do.
With the bath ready, Aemond dismissed the maids as he helped her from the bed to go to the privy concealed by a long curtain and then undress for the bath. Moving at this stage in the pregnancy was difficult for her, as she waddled more than walked.
"I do wish father would stop this treatment of you, but he is old and set in his ways," Chen said, coming from behind the curtain and was turned facing away by him as he undid the back of her shift. "Anything different to his values, he is set on fighting it every step of the way. He does not believe it will happen until the thing itself is done and he is digging his heels in because he is well aware nothing can be done. He will not name my heir. Our child."
Aemond hummed in agreement as he helped her walk over and settle into the bath, removing his breeches and sitting down in it in front of her, his eye patch set on the edge of the water. "It's all that talk his advisors bleat into his ears, that you defer to me on all things and I am somehow your puppeteer."
Chen's face clouded over with irritation. "Which is false,"she said, maneuvering her hair off her chest.
Tumblr media
"I defer to no one...no matter how handsome they may be," she added with a smirk. "Now come, my back needs scrubbing, husband."
"As you command." Aemond smiled, shifting over to his wife with no washing cloth and zero intention of scrubbing her back.
Chen happily melded into her husband's arms, her fingers attempting to stroke his face as he kept gently biting and kissing them, causing her to giggle.
"I give you this privilege of naming our child because I love seeing you happy. Letters from Westeros always bring a beautiful light to your face and I never tire of looking at you when you are in such a state," Chen whispered, lightly trailing the scarring of his eye, his functioning one closed as he enjoyed her touch. "If I can give you another piece of home in this way, with a name of your choosing, then I will do it. No one will dissuade me."
"And I thank you for that, my love," Aemond whispered back, hungrily taking Chen's lips.
------------
EPILOGUE
19 years later...
Empress Chen was initially not happy with her son Aemond's choice for a bride.
The girl came from a good family, from the farthermost eastern district of Yi Ti. She was not a foreigner technically but that district had such different customs to the rest of the kingdom that she might as well have been.
Also...she was an orphan. Her entire family lost to a wave of disease that swept the area, she the only survivor.
However, though he hadn't officially talked of the matter with her, Chen's husband supported their son's choice. And her advisors had just let her know he was on his way to talk with her about something "important".
Chen, heavy with her and Aemond The Elder's 6th child (the previous 5 had all been boys), sat at her table and went through the important documents of the day as the double doors to the chamber opened.
Her husband walked in, hands clasped behind him, as was his way.
Tumblr media
"My answer is yes," Chen said to him, as Aemond stopped before her on the opposite side of the table. She did not look up but continued to rifle through documents.
Aemond smirked. "You do not even know what it is I've come to speak to you about."
"Yes I do, husband," Chen sighed, finally facing him and smirking back. "Our eldest son has begged you to take up his cause and I am telling you my answer: Yes. Yes, he can marry the girl. If he is putting up this much of a fuss over a mere orphan I suppose there really must be something special about her."
"Our son will be happy with your answer," Aemond said, lightly bowing before turning to leave.
"Perhaps their children might get the mother's coloring," Chen said in a joking manner, pretending to complain.
"I'll be sure to let Aemond know his marriage is officially approved." Aemond said, ignoring the bait to argue about his sons being near identical copies of him. He smiled over his shoulder as he left.
Every single one of their sons came out with silver hair. Every single one. The only consolation was their eldest who seemed to have a slight blend of black strands among his silver hair, making it darker than the rest of the brothers so that it was grey instead of white, and also had a hint of resemblance to his mother's face.
It was nice to see a little bit of herself in at least one son but Chen longed for a child that looked exactly like her and hoped this next one in her womb would grant that wish.
It had been a source of great joy for Aemond and a salve for his loneliness, as he still missed Westeros. Chen sometimes tired of his blood winning out every time she birthed a babe but having others who looked like he did, it brightened his disposition immensely.
And if her husband was happy, then Chen was content to limit her complaints of the matter.
Some hours later, in their private apartments, Aemond the Younger let his betrothed know she would be his empress one day.
------
Tumblr media
"The rumors really are true, then," Mei said, giggling slightly.
"What rumors?" Aemond asked. Mei was readying his hair for court that evening.
"That Empress Chen does not deny her husband when he asks for something. I am grateful he spoke in favor of our union. It was smart of you to go to him."
"Mother does not acquiesce every time!" Aemond protested, standing up as Mei finished with his hair.
"I don't mean every time!" Mei said. "I just meant...she really does care about his happiness, doesn't she? If something can be done to make him happy, she makes it so. I intend to be the same way with you." She smiled up at him.
Tumblr media
Aemond blushed and went on his way.

Oh look at my first SVSSS X Game of Thrones crossover plotbunny...
And I just found it among my hundred-something drafts. Looking back, wow it's such a basic idea.
Game of Thrones doesn't ever really flesh out Yi Ti other than the whole it's some Generic Asian Culture. But there's magic! So why not make Yi Ti a Chinese cultivation setting.
Imagine Daenerys Targaryen getting ready to board her ship with her dragons and in comes Liu Qingge who sees a cool monster to slay and bring back to show to Shen Qingqiu!
Sorry Daenerys, Liu Qingge's courtship is more important. Shen Yuan needs those dragons! (Does wife-beam count on dragons?)
(And a grumpy hangry Mobei Jun gets mistaken as the Night King come alive again by the North. Mobei Jun is particularly annoyed by this because he just left his very comfortable cold castle to go to the warmer parts of his icy empire to deal with his wanna be ice king.)

Tw: mentions of child birth, pregnancy, accusations are made towards reader (mfs don’t know how genetics work), reader has dark hair and eyes, some angst but fluff. Mentions of intimacy. Reader is from Yi Ti
You were a trusted friend of the Targaryen's, your father would bring you with him when he took a trip to Kings Landing to see the king. At some point your family moved to Westeros, you had grown up with the Targaryen children, but you were close to Aemond. Even after he lost his eye you still remained by his side.
After years, you both have become of age, and you were matched by the Queen to wed. This made you both happy, you had married both out of duty and love. The day of the ceremony, you were so happy that it was obvious how happy you were that your husband to be was the boy now man you had fallen in love.
That night when you had to officially seal the marriage, it was a night of passion, that was he had taken your maidenhead so lovingly that you would always remember.
You had also fallen with child as expected, Aemond was happy knowing that your child was growing in your womb. During your pregnancy he made sure you were comfortable and well taken care off. He would skip his lessons and training to make sure you were well, he didn’t want nothing bad to happen to you and your babe but mainly you. Pregnancies were risky, he would never end your life over that of a child in which who knows if it’ll live or die.
Months past and finally you had given birth, it was painful but your babe was a healthy boy. Once you had him in his arms, you noticed how your son had your dark hair, once he had opened his eyes they were also like yours. He was beautiful.
Then your husband along with your sister and mother by law walked in. Helaena had congratulated you, also kissing your sweat covered forehead and had a good look at your son. “He’s beautiful” she mentioned and moved a side for her mother to see. The Queen had also congratulated you and looked at the babe in your arms. You noticed how her facial expression changed from a smile to one of displeasure. Your son did not look nothing like her son, he did not have white hair or purple eyes.
Aemond then approached and asked to hold the babe. You gladly handed the babe over to your husband. Instead of having a sour expression, he had a smile on his face, he had a healthy son. Even better was the fact that his son looked like his beautiful mother.
Everything was fine until people began to whisper things about you and your son. They said that you must of laid with someone or one of the Velaryon boys before being wed to Aemond. The rumors got worse when they began to get to you, at first you didn’t care but it had got to the point where it made you cry, your child may not look like his father but the child was his, if only they notice how your son had his lips and nose, once your son had gown into a young man, he’ll have the freckles he once had.
Your mother by law seemed to believe in those rumors, but Helaena didn’t. She loved spending time with you and your son, Aerys. She had also told you somethings when it came for caring for a babe since you were a new mother. Your now Niece and Nephew also liked Aerys, they would try and play with him by putting their toys in his crib or try and get him to talk.
That night you had fed and put Aerys to bed, then you began getting ready to sleep. You had your son’s crib in your bed chamber’s you wanted him close to you.
As you had changed into a night gown, you had been thinking about what your husband. Will he also believe that his son was not his? Will he send you away back to your family? What would he think? You thought, not realizing that he had walked in.
“Dear wife” he greeted as you jumped startled “oh, dear husband” you said as you got up and walked over to him, he was standing in front of the crib, looking at his son sleep. “He is very calm” he mentioned, once you were next to him you leaned your head on his shoulder. Aemond then looked at you and saw your worried look. “Y/n? What is wrong?” he asked and he then took your hand into his.
“Its just that...” you took a deep breath, then spoke “people have been saying things about me and Aerys, how he doesn’t belong to you or how I laid with someone before we wedded” you admitted, your eyes were now being flooded y tears. Aemond then guided you to the bed and sat you down in front of him.
“Do not listen to him, he is my son, he looks after his beautiful mother” he said as he pulled you close into a hug. You hugged him tightly, tears falling from your eyes. “I will speak with my mother, if this continues on, we’ll leave, we will go live with your parents or just anywhere away from here” he said stroking your hair. He hated seeing you upset, it broke his heart seeing his beloved wife being attacked by people who had nothing better to do but speak badly of others. Aemond would do anything to protect you and his son.
The next day, your father and mother came to visit, wanting to meet their grandson. Your father was delighted upon  seen his grandchild, he said that the babe was blessed with the family’s appearance. Your mother had mentioned that your son looks exactly like you.
During that time that you were with your parent’s Aemond was talking to his mother and The Hand. “Isn’t it obvious? My son looks like his mother! Y/n was pure!” he said angrily at the Hightowers “that still doesn’t chance that her son looks nothing like you, are you sure that he is your son?” Otto asked, this made him more furious, how dare he question you, his wife.
“Alright then, me and my wife will be leaving then” he said as Alicent finally spoke up. “No, you mustn't leave” she said as her son scoffed. “I will not stay here and have my wife be questioned by you or anyone. Aerys is my son, he may not have the Valyrian features, but he is my flesh and blood!” At this point he was shouting, he was very angry. “Tomorrow, we will be leaving with her parents” he stated and left.
He had never raised his voice at his mother and grandsire, but he couldn’t help it. They had no right in questioning you, he will not let you be unhappy do to people’s words. He wanted you to be happy like you have always been, ever since you had given birth to Aerys, you were nervous and very stressed by those words. Perhaps being away from that environment will do you good.
When you had bed your parents a good night you went back to you bed chambers with your son in arms who was now asleep. Once in, you saw how your husband was packing your things away “Husband? What are you doing?” you asked quietly as you laid Aerys to bed. “Tomorrow we’ll be leaving, with your parents back to Yi Ti” he said, this surprised you a bit “are you sure? What did your mother say?” you asked as he walked towards you.
“Don’t worry about that” he said as he leaned down and kissed your forehead. “I will not have you suffer here, I want you to be happy, I don’t want you worrying about what others say.” He said as he then lifted your chin and gentle kissed you. You kissed him back, wrapping your arms around his neck. Once you pulled away from him, you hugged him tightly. “I’ll be nice going back home” you admitted to him. He smiled and gave you a small peck on the lips, he was happy seeing you smiling again.

Summary: 美灵 (Měilíng) was a young girl from the port city of Shenlong in Yi Ti when she learns that she is the only living child of 徐浩然 (Xú Hàorán), a cruel and powerful merchant in Wan, and takes her to Westeros to expand his company. Scared in a new land, her only companions are her trusty flute and memories of her mother's stories. But she will have a friend who will change her life forever, and she will do the same for him.

Author's Note: Please read this post for reference. Exams and ADHD are kicking my ass, and I need a distraction. Please do not repost without my permission. I did not come up with the names for the Yi Ti regions; that credit belongs to the brilliant @anya-snow. If you are interested in the names' translations, it is at the bottom.
Tumblr media
From the Beginning:
“As she entered the world and cried out in victory for her survival – the fearsome, dark clouds parted, and the sun’s feeble rays shone only to pool the delivery room as the gentle breeze brought by the sea welcomed Xīwángmǔ’s new child, and the small wind chimes and bells danced in its embrace.”
In the Shenlong province, a young girl gave birth to a young girl. However, the baby was exceptional. As she grew, she showed to have a very cunning mind. She has met thousands of foreigners daily since being born in a port town. Her proficiency in learning foreign tongues alone caught the attention of one of the oldest and wealthiest merchants in Wan. Měilíng did not have much, but she had her mother and her simple life by the docks, and that was enough for her.
Xu Hàorán, an aging but powerful merchant in Wan, was the most important port city in Yi Ti. The merchant was very old, and his wife had long died without giving him any children. At the news of the child’s birth, he ordered the child and her mother to be brought to his home.
After seeing the child’s face, it was clear that this was his daughter. Recalling the time he spent with a girl from a poor fishing family years ago, he realized that Měilíng was the product of that night. Overridden with joy at the idea of him finally having an heir, he immediately ordered Mei to begin her education as he locked her mother in a small, dark room.
Měilíng despised her father. Soon, it became years since she saw her mother, and she missed the lullabies she would sing to her. She would long to listen to the stories of the great water dragons that controlled the storms and the seas.
But still, she decided to continue her education. She showed much promise at a young age for business and trade. She had a keen eye for craftsmanship and a talent for linguistics. Her proficiency in learning foreign tongues made her a vital tool in expanding her father’s company across the Golden Empire to Essos and eventually to the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros.
In return for how rich his daughter made him, Měilíng’s father granted Měilíng one visit to her mother. When the pair reunited, Měilíng’s mother gifted her beloved child a flute from the bones of a basilisk killed by the great Dragon King, who ruled the sky and its storms from his kingdom in the sea.
Because of how quickly she learned Westerosi’s Common Tongue, her father decided it was best to bring her with him on the voyage to Planky Town in Dorne, where he hoped to expand his trading route to the pockets of the high nobility.
On the seas, a cyclone headed directly to the ship Měilíng and her father were on, but only Měilíng was calm.
Taking out her bone flute, she played a simple but beautiful tune to the sky, and the cyclone disappeared, and the winds brought their ships to Dorne in half the expected time. Although this story was kept secret by the crew under strict oath of Hàorán’s orders, she was soon called “风子” or “Child of the Wind.”
“Bewitched were the Martell’s – for they have never seen such finery in all their years. ‘What luster! What radiance!’ they exclaimed. After rigorous negotiations that resulted in a broken vase and spilled wine by thrown glasses, a trade was brokered, and the Xu’s have planted their first flag in the West.”
After reaching Dorne, the Martells refused to meet with the foreign merchant. They believed that any goods his ships carried had long become spoiled and rotten from the sea voyage. But they were shocked to find the fruits fresh and ripe, the herbs and spices’ scents had not dulled, and the porcelain vases retained their glossiness and shine. But what caught their eye the most was how superior their silks were compared to their own. Their roughest bolt alone was far smoother than the Princesses’ finest dresses.
The silks and fruits caught the eyes of a young Princess, Elia Martell, and her younger brother, Prince Oberyn. Fascinated by the riches, their curiosity was peaked by the olive-skin-toned girl, who wore strange braids and smelled of the ocean and wind.
Elia asked Mei if Yi Ti was anything like Dorne. Měilíng replied that only one region in her country matched Dorne, and it was Ren. She wove tales of how the Renii managed to thrive in the deserts and become masters of magi and developing technology and medicine. Although Mei had never personally visited Ren, she told the Donrish princess and her brother all the stories of the province she could recall from her lessons and her mother.
Měilíng asked Elia if there was any magic or dragons in Dorne. Elia laughed in delight. She told the foreign girl that Dorne did not have dragons, but they had vipers with poison so potent that it would instantly kill a ten-foot man. The Seven Kingdoms' only dragons were underneath the Red Keep in King’s Landing. But they were all dead. But there was no magic. This disappointed Měilíng.
Elia asked if Měilíng knew anyone, and Měilíng replied that Elia was the first person in Westeros she had ever spoken to. Amazed by the girl’s fluency, Elia exclaimed that she and Měilíng would be best friends for the rest of their lives. Měilíng thought the young princess strange but agreed nonetheless.
Seeing her children make friends with the merchant’s daughter, Princess Lorenza was pleased to see the strange girl smile. But Hàorán was furious. Greed from his newly gained wealth made him paranoid, and he thought Měilíng was ridiculing him in the Common Tongue. He faked a smile before hurrying his sale to the mother so that he may properly punish his willful brat.
After purchasing their goods, the sewists in Sunspear immediately went to work producing the finest garments for the upcoming ball hosted in the Red Keep at King’s Landing.
Meanwhile, Hàorán grabbed Měilíng’s arm and dragged her to the ship. He locked her in her room and told her she would not have any food tonight. They would leave for Yi Ti after the Martells returned from King’s Landing.
“Silence swept across the hall when the heralds announced the arrival of House Martell. When Dorne’s ruler and her children arrived, a collective gasp was heard amidst the hushed keep – never had anyone seen such pure, unadulterated beauty before their eyes. Every young girl, hoping to catch the eye of Prince Rhaegar and hold his gaze, felt fury flush their bodies. But no other girl was more envious than the little Lioness of Casterly Rock. Cersei Lannister, daughter of the Hand to the King, had come in complete confidence that she would be the most beautiful girl in the Seven Kingdoms. But after gazing upon the young Elia Martell’s dress with silk-embroidered suns and stars, golden rings, and topaz diadems – she felt utterly and completely humiliated. She turned to her father to demand they go home, but his stern gaze made the spoilt and rotten girl stay silent in flushed shame.
Tywin Lannister was not faring any better. He had paid more than enough gold dragons to order the finest Dornish silks for his daughter’s dress only to see it as a tacky, cheap counterfeit. But even he had to admit that Princess Elia Martell was the only girl whose beauty was worthy of watching the crown prince’s. Seeing how her father’s eyes were no longer on her, Cersei decided that she would do whatever it took for Elia Martell to die a miserable and painful death.”
Nobles crowded the Martells’ daughters and sons. They were driven mad with envy at their beauty– so rare to find silk so smooth and lustrous while remaining thick enough to keep away the chills in the evening sky as autumn chased summer away and winter was creeping on the Mad King’s doorstep.
One noble lady with embroidered turtles on her dress approached the Martell Princess. She was Lady Cassana Baratheon, nee Estermont. She begged her friend to tell her who gifted the princess with such luxury, and her friend revealed that her husband had brokered a deal with an old, wrinkled merchant from Yi Ti, along with his young daughter, who carried an old flute with her everywhere she went. She shared stories about how her little sun, Elia, was quickly won over by the foreign girl’s charms, and now they acted as close as sisters born from the same womb.
Cassana wished to know if they could invite the merchant to her home. She thought it would be cruel for such a sweet girl to be trapped on a boat with no companions.
“‘Oh, how wonderful it would be to have a girl around,’ thought Lady Cassana. ‘Robert has gotten too used to being so rowdy after being fostered in the Vale, and hopefully, the little merchant girl will straighten him out.’
Robert stood beside the table, its surface heavy with meats and sweet cakes. He was only ten years of age and had already managed to grasp the attention of every young man his age in the room. Her mind wandered off, thinking about her youngest son, Stannis, who locked himself away in the guest chambers after the Martells arrived—always studying, her youngest boy. Lady Baratheon adored her two boys, but she longed for the longest time to be blessed with a daughter. She thought if the Gods had blessed her and Steffon with a girl, she would help bring Stannis out of his walls and help reel Robert in. If what the Princess of Dorne had spoken true of this trader and his daughter, then Cassana had no doubt that she would make a truly excellent companion for her boys.
Back in Dorne, Měilíng scratched her ears. Had someone been talking about her? Was it the Dornish Ruler she met a few weeks ago? Perhaps Elia? Měilíng shook her head. Thinking someone would speak of her so much was a silly thought. She was only the daughter of a merchant who played the flute. Still, her ears burned as hot tears streamed down her cheeks. To forget her hunger, Měilíng brought her prized flute to her lips to ease her worries and blew to create a sweet but sad melody.
Back in the Red Keep, a young Stannis Baratheon had crept away from the banquet in the Great Hall. He despised crowded rooms, and Robert’s boisterous guffaws only added to his irritation. Once he entered his room, he opened the window and took out the book Maester Cressen lent him while packing for this trip. He had not begun reading it. But a stream of calm and soft notes entered his ear before he could read the title.
“A flute?” he thought to himself. He tried to remember the instruments played downstairs.
There were lyres, harps, and lutes. But there were no flutes. Stannis lifted his head and heard the sweet, silvery tune from the window. Book still in his hand, he decided it best to read his new book beside the window, where he could continue listening to the lovely melody. He glanced down at the book, finally reading the title.

A collage of Yi Ti fashions in GOT Universe
Yi Ti has nods to Imperial China btw
Yi Ti is one of the oldest civillizations of GOT Universe, with dramatic Feudal histories, large armies, and boasting one of the largest populations in the GOT Universe
Yi Ti has had dramatic relations with multiple other Realms of Westeros and Essos over time - cold War like relations with Valyria in the Valyrian Empire times, often trade and socio political dramas with Dothraki Realms ( which has nods to Central Asia , Jogos Nghai ( which has nods to Ancient Mongolia ), Lhazar ( which has nods to Tibetan Plateau ), and soon embarked tremendous trading routes with Braavos.
In the 1st century BC, Yi Ti is in Han Dynasty. In HOTD ( which is set in 12th century ), Yi Ti is in Song Dynasty, and in the GOT series ( which is set in 15th century ), Yi Ti is in Ming Dynasty.

Note
You misunderstand me. I'm not saying it has no bearing on the story because it's from Yi Ti, I'm saying that since the Blood Betrayal hasn't yet been confirmed as the official reason why the Long Night began, HotD wouldn't be interested in referencing it. Also I doubt Condal and Hess read TWOIAF.
Anon speaks of this post.
Not sure why you think I misunderstood. I addressed your point about how "we can't know" that this legend explains or thematically explains the connection of misogyny to how we lose the dragons.
A)
Rhaenyra -- Amethyst Empress --- woman who lost her throne and life to an evil younger brother through force
Aegon II -- Bloodstone Emperor --- both usurp their elder, chosen sister
Daenerys/Amethyst Empress/Rhaenyra --- women of authority and power
Viserys (III)/Aegon II/Bloodstone Emperor --- brothers who have endangered, abused, or killed their sister and meant to displce them from their own rights, innate or sociopolitical, for their own power advancement.
As for Condal and Hess, they can't do pattern recognition, now? Condal especially said he was a "fan" of this series and world. He didn't read TWoIaF and he claims to be a AsoIaF "fan"?
It is similar here, with the Bloodstone Emporer/Amethyst Empress and that particular legend's explanation for the Long Night. This legend doesn't have to be totally real, and I mean that it doesn't have to be true that there was a 1000 year old emperor as the Yi Ti are told to believe abt some of the known Emperors. These are metaphorical in the first place.
All the legend is clueing us in on is that this betrayal, whatever it was, was one between relatives, a man undoing a woman's place, and thus speaking to how it threw off the balance of the world's magic. That women are a critical part of that balance. That's the central idea being conveyed, the purpose of this legend--everything points to Dany vs the Others (yes the others of the Big Five are still relevant, but they have no chance without her).
We don't need to know the actual details of who these particular people were and what they weren't when they loved or died, just that something like this usurpation definitely happened and there was a notable affect on magic in the realm those emperors ruled over, as Yi Tish people are also very active in magic wielding...most of Essos is, unlike Westeros.
I'm going to repeat myself in this post, but: this is not a real history book where we'll likely not know much of anything...GRRM provides more answers in his fictional history than real history books do.
All this is important to the theme of F&B: greedy men sideline, abuse, uproot women they are blood connected to for power (just as the Bloodstone emperor did), the women suffer for it/lose their political authority therefore their ability to as actively direct the direction of the House, and eventually the entire house and Westeros loses dragons to use against the Others and the world's magical & biological ecosystem is totally thrown off kilter until Dany literally sets it right again by bring the dragons back. The dragonglass candles at Oldtown, they light up again when she does this. The last of AGoT:
As Daenerys Targaryen rose to her feet, her black hissed, pale smoke venting from its mouth and nostrils. The other two pulled away from her breasts and added their voices to the call, translucent wings unfolding and stirring the air, and for the first time in hundreds of years, the night came alive with the music of dragons.
So again, why do you need "more" "confirmation" when there is so much evidence, when that's not how fiction works (that you need things totally spelled out for you to be true), etc?
Honestly, this seems a literacy and latent sexism issue that causes this cognitive dissonance in fans that makes them deny these types of connections as canon, real, whatever. Bc you have people caliming Jon is Azor Ahai up the wazzo simply because he's the son of a Targ and a Stark (fire and ice), male, the "sword" of the prophecy they take as literal, etc. etc. But "song" means "war" and Jon has done nothing/nothing has happened around him to predicate a connection the Azor Ahai prophecy in-text. Yet so many people ride for this stupid idea, this stupid unsupported idea!
This idea that has never been "confirmed" and never will be bc there is and has never been evidence to how Jon Snow, a Westerosi Stark through and through, relates to an Essosi prophecy when Dany--who grew up in Essos and was born in Westeros thus is a connector of the two continents; is actively dealing with dragons and having dragons dreams; in Essos where the Azor Ahai prophecy originates; comes from a dragonriding lienage ("fire"); the enemy of "fire" has always been "cold" and Jon is more Stark than Targ, so "cold" must be the ecological and magical threat that is the Others that even GoT has had us anticipate since its very 1st episode as THE enemy before that atrocious last season!!!; when we know "prince" is a gender neutral term form High Valyrian (Prince that was Promised)--has all the evidence of being Azor Ahai.
And why does it matter they they haven't read it when they could have asked GRRM or just read F&B to properly understand the point of the Dance?
Condal can't clock that this legend is narratively important just as much that the CotF/"those who sing the song of the earth's connection to Dany and Westeros' future? Just bc a thing is in Essos, doesn't mean it will not affect Westeros just as real life Ancient Asian societies have been able to make physical trade as well as intellectual "trade" or influence on stuff in the West. He can't clock Rhaena the BB and Elissa's connection to Daenerys? Condal read how Dany is connected to Braavos and how Dreamfyre's eggs went there and didn't put 2 and 2 together?
This is why you don't bring non-fantasy readers to write a fantasy show. who then, bc of said ignorance, want to somehow "make the story better" or different...the same story they don't even understand. Also why you don't bring a marketing guy to write any adaptive as intricate and rich as ASoIaF and to not understand the depth or the patterns of magical phenomenon that good faith fantasy readers have habitually done since their childhood (most readers anyway have read fantasy since childhood and religiously so to understand its conventions) when that's not what they look out for in the first place.
B)
The fact that Dany's eggs are Dreamfyre's also haven't been "confirmed" by GRRM or revealed in The Winds of Winter or A Dream of Spring. That doesn't make this any less true.
1- from his website
What really happened during the Dance of the Dragons? Why did it become so deadly to visit Valyria after the Doom? What is the origin of Daenerys’s three dragon eggs? These are but a few of the questions answered in this essential chronicle, as related by a learned maester of the Citadel
2- It's pretty much fact with how these are THREE eggs that petrified when they are away from Dragonstone; IIllyrio Mopatis had them to give to Dany and she eventually awakens them; F&B takes the time to painstakingly show Rhaena the BB's conversation w/Jaehaerys abt the consequences of THREE dragon eggs going missing. What other reason was there for F&B--a text that aims to contextualize Daenerys by telling the stories of her ancestors before the loss of the dragons and a little after--to do so hard abt 3 dragon eggs stolen during Rhaena's time, from her dragon's clutch, under her watch?! A text that traces the existence of dragons and their maintenance/use by the Targs? Then there is the fact that Elissa Farman--the egg thief--sold the eggs to the Sealord of Braavos, another thing necessary to Dany's arc. None of this is an accident or a red herring, esp since there is literally nothing as damning as evidence or suggestion for the argument of Syrax being the mother...at all. Nothing in the text.
Not everything in ASoIaF is a great and complex mystery; sometimes GRRM gives you clues to a simple "mystery" to deduce the truth of, esp when we already have much evidence of Danyxher dragons being necessary and critical for the coming Long Night against the "ice/cold" others. That she/her dragons are the "fire" in the Song of Ice and Fire, a coming magical war for the world. This is the type of chain of clues that are retrospective and not anticipatory. We already have the result (Dany and the eggs); you were tasked to recognized the line of causation pretty quickly. This is still a fiction series with correct answers.
All this is evidenced just in the main series, TWoIaF acts as a support piece...Condal is a fan, but he can make deductions? Sure.

The Magic Users Before Old Valyria, Part One: Magical Nuclear Fallout
i am positive this post has been made before but i'm making it anyway because it's eating away at my brain so let's gooooo.
We are delving into a fever dream that Dany has in AGOT, that will take us to the Pre-Valyrian magical users and their link to Valyria.
so in Dany's fever dream in AGOT, she has a vision of her ancestors:
Ghosts lined the hallway, dressed in the faded raiment of kings. In their hands were swords of pale fire. They had hair of silver and hair of gold and hair of platinum white, and their eyes were opal and amethyst, tourmaline and jade.
They look just like other Valyrians - hair of gold, white, and silver with funky colored eyes.
But note the exact gems mentioned! In TWOIAF, we get a little background on Yi Ti and their belief system. read here:
[In the beginning] a single realm ruled by the God-on-Earth, the only begotten son of the Lion of Night and Maiden-Made-of-Light, who traveled about his domains in a palanquin carved from a single pearl and carried by a hundred queens, his wives. For ten thousand years the Great Empire of the Dawn flourished in peace and plenty under the God-on-Earth, until at last he ascended to the stars to join his forebears.
Dominion over mankind then passed to his eldest son, who was known as the Pearl Emperor and ruled for a thousand years. The Jade Emperor, the Tourmaline Emperor, the Onyx Emperor, the Topaz Emperor, and the Opal Emperor followed in turn, each reigning for centuries…
When the daughter of the Opal Emperor succeeded him as the Amethyst Empress, her envious younger brother cast her down and slew her, proclaiming himself the Bloodstone Emperor and beginning a reign of terror. He practiced dark arts, torture, and necromancy, enslaved his people, took a tiger-woman for his bride, feasted on human flesh, and cast down the true gods to worship a black stone that had fallen from the sky.
Opal, Amethyst, Tourmaline, and Jade Emperors, just like her ancestors. It's not a huge stretch to say that likely, Dany, and therefore Valyrians as a whole (or at the least the Dragon Riders of Valyria) are the remnants of this ancient empire, The Great Empire of the Dawn, the same way that the Ghiscari culture is the remnant of Old Ghis - changed a bit, but with many similarities passed down amongst its people.
But who exactly is this civilization and how did they eventually turn into the Valyrians? Well, let's keep continuing with that passage about the Bloodstone Emperor:
In the annals of the Further East, it was the Blood Betrayal, as his usurpation is named, that ushered in the age of darkness called the Long Night…How long the darkness endured no man can say, but all agree that it was only when a great warrior—known variously as Hyrkoon the Hero, Azor Ahai, Yin Tar, Neferion, and Eldric Shadowchaser—arose to give courage to the race of men and lead the virtuous into battle with his blazing sword Lightbringer that the darkness was put to rout, and light and love returned once more to the world.
Basically, the people of Yi Ti believe that the Great Empire of the Dawn stretched far across the globe, and that when the Bloodstone Emperor usurped his niece, The Amethyst Empress, potentially using some weird blood magic, it caused the Long Night and the collapse of the Great Empire of the Dawn.
I think that this blood magic he was messing around with was, to use a metaphor, basically a magic nuclear bomb and I think ground zero for this - and therefore the capital of the Great Empire of the Dawn - is Asshai-by-the-Shadow. It's very notable that Asshai is so old its people don't even know what its origins are:
The ancient port of Asshai stands at the end of a long wedge of land, on the point where the Jade Sea meets the Saffron Straits. Its origins are lost in the mists of time. Even the Asshai’i do not claim to know who built their city; they will say only that a city has stood here since the world began and will stand here until it ends. Few places in the known world are as remote as Asshai, and fewer are as forbidding. Travelers tell us that the city is built entirely of black stone: halls, hovels, temples, palaces, streets, walls, bazaars, all. Some say as well that the stone has a greasy, unpleasant feel to it, that it seems to drink the light, dimming tapers and torches and hearth fires alike.
Note that last part, about the city being built from black stone - Valyria is well known for having Weird, Cool Architecture that involves black stone, fused together by dragon fire. From ADWD prologue:
Across the wide blue expanse of the Rhoyne, he could see the Black Wall that had been raised by the Valyrians when Volantis was no more than an outpost of their empire: a great oval of fused stone two hundred feet high and so thick that six four-horse chariots could race around its top abreast, as they did each year to celebrate the founding of the city.
and again from Tyrion's POV:
The gateway to the Long Bridge was a black stone arch carved with sphinxes, manticores, dragons, and creatures stranger still. Beyond the arch stretched the great span that the Valyrians had built at the height of their glory, its fused stone roadway supported by massive piers.
And one more time F&B/The Princess and the Queen, when Aegon and Sunfyre on are Dragonstone:
Sunfyre’s scales still shone like beaten gold in the sunlight, but as he sprawled across the fused black Valyrian stone of the yard, it was plain to see that he was a broken thing, he who had been the most magnificent dragon ever to fly the skies of Westeros
rip to the hottest dragon in westeros.
It's very much a Valyrian thing, this fused black stone...yet the entirety of Asshai is built with black stone, even though the city predates Valyria, and the black stone of Asshai is just a little different - a greasy, unpleasant feeling. I think that this greasy feeling comes from the remnants of the magic that caused the Long Night - going back to that idea of a magical nuclear bomb which is poisoning the land the way radiation does. I think this because there are actually several ancient cities of mysterious origin with black stone and a greasy, oily feeling to them, all of which seem to have suffered some sort of magical nuclear fallout the way Asshai has, and they're all not too far from each other either:
The Idol on the Isle of Toads in the Basilisk Isles
Ruins found upon the Isle of Tears, the Isle of Toads, and Ax Island hint at some ancient civilization, but little is now known of these vanished men of the Dawn Age. If any still survived when the first corsairs settled on the islands, they were soon put to the sword, so no trace of them now remains … save perhaps upon the Isle of Toads…
On the Isle of Toads can be found an ancient idol, a greasy black stone crudely carved into the semblance of a gigantic toad of malignant aspect, some forty feet high. The people of this isle are believed by some to be descended from those who carved the Toad Stone, for there is an unpleasant fishlike aspect to their faces, and many have webbed hands and feet. If so, they are the sole surviving remnant of this forgotten race.
The Five Forts
The Five Forts are very old, older than the Golden Empire itself; some claim they were raised by the Pearl Emperor during the morning of the Great Empire to keep the Lion of Night and his demons from the realms of men … and indeed, there is something godlike, or demonic, about the monstrous size of the forts, for each of the five is large enough to house ten thousand men, and their massive walls stand almost a thousand feet high.
Certain scholars from the west have suggested Valyrian involvement in the construction of the Five Forts, for the great walls are single slabs of fused black stone that resemble certain Valyrian citadels in the west … but this seems unlikely, for the Forts predate the Freehold’s rise, and there is no record of any dragonlords ever coming so far east.
The Ancient City of Yeen
Maesters and other scholars alike have puzzled over the greatest of the engimas of Sothoryos, the ancient city of Yeen. A ruin older than time, built of oily black stone, in massive blocks so heavy that it would require a dozen elephants to move them, Yeen has remained a desolation for many thousands of years, yet the jungle that surrounds it on every side has scarce touched it.
And even more suspicious is the fact that Sothoryos, where Yeen is located, is known for its large wyvern population:
Most terrible of all are the wyverns, those tyrants of the southern skies, with their great leathery wings, cruel beaks, and insatiable hunger. Close kin to dragons, wyverns cannot breathe fire, but they exceed their cousins in ferocity and are a match for them in all other respects save size.
Now there's different stories on how dragons came to be, but most interesting to me is what the Asshai'i claim:
The Valyrians themselves claimed that dragons sprang forth as the children of the Fourteen Flames, while in Qarth the tales state that there was once a second moon in the sky. One day this moon was scalded by the sun and cracked like an egg, and a million dragons poured forth. In Asshai, the tales are many and confused, but certain texts—all impossibly ancient—claim that dragons first came from the Shadow, a place where all of our learning fails us. These Asshai’i histories say that a people so ancient they had no name first tamed dragons in the Shadow and brought them to Valyria, teaching the Valyrians their arts before departing from the annals.
Septon Barth later writes that he believes Valyrians used wyverns and blood magic to make dragons:
In Septon Barth’s Dragons, Wyrms, and Wyverns, he speculated that the bloodmages of Valyria used wyvern stock to create dragons. Though the bloodmages were alleged to have experimented mightily with their unnatural arts, this claim is considered far-fetched by most maesters, among them Maester Vanyon’s Against the Unnatural contains certain proofs of dragons having existed in Westeros even in the earliest of days, before Valyria rose to be a power.
So to sum up basically:
Dany's vision shows us her ancestors, who are almost definitely the rulers of the Great Empire of the Dawn
We know several cities - Asshai, Yeen, the Isle of Toads - that have an architectural resemblance to the fused black stone that the Valyrians used, but their structures predate Valyria.
We know Septon Barth believes dragons were made through blood magic with wyverns as a base stock and that there are a lot of wyverns in one of these ancient places, Sothoryos/Yeen, where the black stone architecture is found.
The people of Yi Ti believe that a magical calamity of some sort caused the Long Night.
THEREFORE: The Great Empire of the Dawn had its capital in Asshai, and used blood magic to start the Long Night (by accident, most likely), which caused a huge magical calamity that affected the entire world, and while their people never recovered from it, they brought their magical knowledge with them to their new home in Valyria, where they made more black fused stone architecture and turned their wyverns into dragons. Meanwhile, the "ground zero" for much of this magical calamity still experiences the magical fallout of this calamity.
OKAY. That's part one because this is getting super long winded. Part Two will be....JUST HOW BIG WAS THE GREAT EMPIRE OF THE DAWN ANYWAY?

Author’s note: Since Yi Ti is based of imperial china, I did a deep dive on ancient Chinese morals and stuff. Sorry if a lot of stuff isn’t accurate.
Part 2 of Like mother, like son
When your parents had heard what was happening in the Red Keep, they welcomed you back home with open arms for as long as you needed, they even allowed you along with Aemond and Aerys to stay with them forever. You father was delighted to know that his grandson will be around his home. That made him really happy.
Once you arrived in Yi Ti, you and your husband will be staying in your bed chambers, it was still the way you kept it, but now a crib was built in it for Aerys to sleep in. While you settled in, you looked around your room, remembering a lot things, you remembered how the maids would come in to wake you up and get you ready for the day. Or how you’d sneak out into the kitchen for some sweet egg buns that were left over. You felt like a child again.
“What’s on your mind my love?” Aemond asked as he sat next to you on the bed, with Aerys in his arms. “Oh nothing its just, I feel like a child again, it’s been so long since I’ve been here” you admited. Your husband smiled and kissed your cheek lovingly “well, you’ll have to teach me some things, the common tongue for sure” he teased, making you giggle. “Of course, I’ll teach you everything”
You did, you taught him the language and how to read in that common tongue. Your language is considered hard but Aemond was a fast learner. You also told him about what kinds of food you would eat, also teaching him how to eat with Chopsticks, it was funny seeing him kind of struggle and getting frustrated, you offered to feed him if he wasn’t able to master holding the chopsticks.
As time when on, your son began to walk and talk or should you said babble he only knew how to say 'mama' or 'baba', it made you happy knowing that your son will grow up in the way you were raised in, not just one culture but both his parents cultures. Even if you were still in the Red Keep you would of thought him anyway.
An unexpected thing has happened, you were with child. Your parents and husband were happy but this worried you a bit. What if what happened at the Red Keep happens again? You thought but you shrugged it off at the moment. You shouldn’t be worried, you should be calm.
Instead of the maids helping you during your pregnancy it your mother, she was pampering just like when you were little. She had a feeling that you’ll have a daughter, you weren’t so sure but she insisted that you will be having a girl. Months went on and your stomach was swelling larger and larger. You felt as if you were going to lay an egg, this pregnancy was a bit more complicated than when you were pregnant with Aerys.
You needed extra assistance with things. Your mother still had the idea of you having a daughter, she was very excited about having a granddaughter to spoil just like your father spoils Aerys.
Then the day came, the day you knew very well, of you bringing your babe into the world. This time it was painful, way more painful. You felt as if your body was on fire, also feelings as if scales were burning you skin. It was painful. Then finally your babe was out. This time it is a girl, your mother was right, a healthy baby girl.
After she had been cleaned up and handed to you, her head was covered in white hair with a little streak of dark hair. Once your husband was allowed in, he was happy knowing that you and the babe were okay. Your mother was practically jumping with happiness with your father since you had another healthy babe. When your daughter was able to open her eyes, her right eye was a lilac purple and her left eye was the same dark shade as yours.
Aemond got a hold of his daughter, looking at her closely. Seeing that just like his son, she shared your features, those being your eyes, your nose, your lips and the same color of your skin. A small tear ran down his cheekbone “she’s beautiful” he said, leaning down to kiss her on the forehead. “What shall we name her?” you asked still exhausted from the labor. “ Aelora” Aemond said as he wiped the tear of his cheek. You smiled seeing your husband hold his daughter. Then Aerys walked in with a maid trailing behind him.
“Mama!” he shreeked running towards you, climbing on the bed and laying next you. You giggled as he managed to get on the bed and hugged you. “Hello my sweet boy” you said as you hugged him back and removing some hair away from his face for you to kiss his forehead. “Meet Aelora, your sister” Aemond said making his way towards the bed, sitting on your left since your son sat on your right.
Aerys leaned over to get a look at the infant. He smiled as he gently poked her cheek making her fuzz a bit. Your mother was in tears of happiness seeing the small family sitting on the bed.
After, once you had got a bath and changed into a pink hanfu, you fed Aelora before putting her to sleep. When she fell asleep, you laid her on the crib that was still installed in your room. Aerys was napping on the bed as well. You sat next him trying not to make much noise to wake him. Making yourself comfortable, you groaned by the pain of the afterbirth. You placed a hand on your stomach trying to sooth the pain a bit, you were used to this but this time it felt a bit more painful.
“How is my lovely wife doing?” you turned seeing your husband coming in. You smiled at him as he approached you, adjusting your pillow so that you can lay back. “I’m alright” you said as he sat on the chair that was pulled next to the bed, taking your right hand into his, gently kissing it. “You did amazing” he admitted, you sighed as you then spoke “I might end up gaining some weight” you admitted, feeling your stomach, every time you had given birth, it felt as if your stomach had been growing. Even after you gave birth, you noticed how you had gain a bit of weight, not only that but you had got more stretch marks.
Aemond leans over kissing your stomach “that’s normal love, I’ll still love you if you did.” He said making you smile. “I sent a raven to Helaena, letting her know of her niece. I miss her along with my niece and nephews” you admitted. Your sister by law was a very good person, she deserved the world in your opinion. She was there during your pregnancy, she was also the only person in the Red Keep who didn’t believe in those accusations, she was actually delighted when she would hold Aerys when he was still a babe.
“We should invite her, I’m sure she’ll love it here” he said as you nodded. “I agree, she might find some new bugs for her collection.” You smiled, it would be nice having her here. “I’m sure she’ll love spending time here” he said smiling. He missed his beloved sister, along with his niece and nephews. One of these days he will fly to the Red Keep to see his mother, but his first priority is his family. You and his children.
