this is one of the best asks i had received here. single-handedly. here is what i think:

gas masks are DEFINITELY a part of the local fashion. they have vigilante and rogue themed once also! do you want Batman-themed gas mask? here you go. or Red Robin one? oh, what is it? you want THE special edition gas mask? the Scarecrow THEMED one? don't worry. we have you covered.

i just know that customs house workers are NOT getting paid enough for this shit. they have, like, ridiculous amount of directive about the simplest items, and that's why tourists are skipping this fucking town. i also pretty much need the game in Papers, Please style with customs house in Gotham, lmao—

my personal canon? every vigilante and some of rogues have merch selling in the town; some more popular than others. my personal canon x2? the Crime Alley started to rep their own Red Hood merch, and Jason was flabbergasted. he then visited the owners of the merch, encouraging them to donate this ridiculous amount of money they get for the rest of Crime Alley citizens. once people found out about this? they went even more insane. the selling of Red Hood merch is just OVER the top. (bonus headcanon: sometimes, there is a ship merch, too. like SuperBat stuff. or BatCat. Dick accidentally stumbles on BatJokes when he hunts for SuperBats key chains and calls Jason to ask him to burn this place down.)

Tim was the OG birdwatcher, trust. but also, YEAH. i am pretty sure some people prepare themselves for the night by grabbing binoculars and super-puper rich cams to examine Bats in their natural habitat. Bats know about the existence of these people, but they can't really do anything about it. Tim has a secret Reddit account that is a local expert in their Gotham Birdwatching community, where he is giving advice or just being a condescending asshole to people. Barbara sometimes chimes in this subreddit to add her own thoughts.

Bats suck at keeping their gadgets or broken pieces of inventory, trust. and people...? oh, people collect this shit. it is either freaks, who have their own personal museums for this, or, like, people who sell what they find on Amazon. everyone wants a piece of that to themselves. (bonus headcanon: Crime Alley people keep bringing Red Hood's dropped weapons and gears back, under Jason's door, even though Jason *insists* that he has no connection to Red Hood. uh-uh.)

i always thought police stations, schools, hospitals, and similar public spaces have different antidotes stocked in any case — Bruce Wayne makes sure it does. and yes, i think they have special lessons for different, specific scenarios: what to do once faced with toxins or pollens, how to apply medicine, or what to do if there is none of it. how to act if there are Poison Ivy's plants surrounding you, etc, etc. police officers definitely carry a few antidotes on themselves, just in case people will need it. and, obviously, the same goes for Bats.

First time players (me) who didn't play the sword game and saw him petrified next to a random pippins who's roasting the HELL out of him just... What is going on?? He was nice and made funny faces... He's completely alone? His job was given to him to get rid of him?? No one likes his jokes?? No one will care that he died??? Other darkners from different dark fountains are fine cus they felt like they belonged but he's... stone?........ He... loved us..?

Inside he was probably stone already...? (Most obvious depression metaphor in a Toby fox game ever) But also his every other expression is that fuckass smug cat face. "How about the usual?" On his first day on the stand. Like that older family member who was so funny and nice to you when you were younger- then you grew up and learned just how horrible his life is.

I went off but you get what I mean??? God damnit. I'm so happy I managed to get this across in my posts about him!! With these kinda characters (I'm mainly thinking of sans atm) there's a delicate balance between the silliness and the tragedy that if one overshadows the other their unique personality gets lost. A lot of us Undertale veterans are guilty of this with sans, myself included, so that's why I'm so happy you feel like I did him justice :]

You know I actually think Douglas Graves is more spineless than Andrew could ever be. Douglas seems to simply view himself as an extension of his wife, I do not think Andrew consistently views himself as an extension of Ashley.

This one’s interesting, because I do conceptually agree, but I also think I have a little more to say than just that.

Where Andrew and Ashley vs Douglas and Renee gets interesting to me is that Douglas isn’t necessarily portrayed as uncomfortable just doing what Renee wants in the same way that if nothing else, just the ____ in a box ending (Choosing Andy ending in episode 3) shows that Andrew is completely miserable just being Ashley’s plaything. It does get a little hard to say, because we are very deliberately shown very little of Douglas, typically, because the story is told from Andrew and Ashley’s perspectives, and he is completely absentee to both of them. (We don’t even get his portraits until we’re in a vision from Renee’s perspectives, for instance) I would say though, that whereas Andrew feels confined and consumed by being under Ashley’s thumb, Douglas seems to be comfortable under Renee’s direction, from what we see.

He won’t stand up to his abusive father, but Renee will do it for him. (They had a plan to kill his parents together, and though we have no idea how much Douglas really liked the idea of this, we know that he was perfectly prepared to go along with the plan before they discovered and decided to keep Renee’s pregnancy.) He doesn’t get the social mind games the surgeon plays with him, but Renee does, and he’s perfectly happy for her to just speak for him entirely in the opposite way to how the surgeon speaks to him for her. And even just in the car on the way to the grandparents! He tries to stammer out to the kids why they shouldn’t ruin the car, but they don’t respond, and then he’s perfectly happy to let Renee bark out the orders. (Only to Andrew, passing that chain of responsibility right along, as well….)

Andrew wouldn’t take this from Ashley. We’ve all known for a while that his ‘doormat extraordinaire’ descriptor is a good bit of unreliable narration, and is exactly what he wants us to think, but it’s still worth noting for that all he does give into Ashley and appear to be that doormat, it’s reluctantly. A lot of the time he’s only battered down into agreeing with her, which is part of why he’s so frustrated and often times verging on nihilistic in episode 3.

So whilst, yep, I do think Douglas would be happy to call himself an extension of Renee, because when he comes home from long hours of work, feeling tired and frustrated and perhaps verging on nihilistic (note, we do not know this, but considering he has to tell Andrew in an episode 2 flashback that he isn’t about to jump off the balcony, it’s not hard to see potential parallels to our very suicidal and nihilistic Shots and Such Andrew) she makes everything right again.

But it really is more complicated for Andrew. Just in this framework, Andrew is both happiest when he has Ashley right beside him, but also at his most miserable when he’s ‘forced’ to put up with her. When he’s apart from Ashley, he feels wrong. But when he’s with Ashley, they so frequently fight and he does things that he doesn’t like. If he thinks of himself as an extension of her, it’s in a very miserable sense; he wants to be more to her than just what she wants to be, and more than just Leyley’s Andy, and feels confined as just her plaything. He views her as fundamentally incapable of drawing any kind of lines between them, so when he is Ashley’s anything, for all that he claims to be happy to be her everything, it isn’t offering any kind of safety or fulfilment in the same way that being Renee’s husband offers something to Douglas.

To put it succinctly, Andrew yearns for an equal partnership; Douglas yearns to be with Renee in any capacity.

Or, well, it’s hard to say exactly how Douglas feels, because we never see his perspective, and because most of the thoughts we have on their relationship are from Renee’s perspective. But we know that they both feel as though they saved each other — it’s just that Renee’s words about this are a lot stronger. She very fervently insists that meeting Douglas is practically the only good thing to happen to her, in her time capsule letter, but Douglas’s is more… wishy-washy, I suppose? He says that being with Renee gives him a reason to stay alive, but practically everything else he says is along the lines of “I want to do this because you do”. Even in Renee’s vision in the vision room, mostly Douglas seems to just test the waters more saying anything concrete, so it’s hard to get his thoughts on things beyond just the obvious “I love my wife”.

What I will say is interesting about that vision is how he does take some actions without Renee’s direct input. He, at the very least, is in tune with her enough to act on her behalf sometimes, as here, he unplugs the phone for her, and is the first to tentatively bring up that they don’t have to do anything about Andrew and Ashley potentially being Nina’s killers. But I think more relevantly here, we also observe he easily he backpedals. He thinks out loud about how the punishment for Andrew and Ashley can’t be that bad if they killed Nina, because they’re both just kids – very apathetic to the situation as he’s apathetic towards the kids – but quickly changes his tune when Renee snaps about not wanting to be seen as the mother of two kids raised so badly they’re murderers. After that, that’s when he starts of his casual avoidance – the “We don’t know that it actually happened, so therefore it probably didn’t” type attitude. (Curiously, this is more of a parallel to Ashley’s line of thinking about Nina with her whole “If you don’t think about something for a really long time, it’ll be like it never happened” type mentality.)

We see Andrew test the waters in similar ways, especially in episode 1, where he lets Ashley dictate a lot of his behaviour for some kind of plausible deniability (“Do we, uhh… Do you want to go check on him?” about the neighbour once on his balcony, and the infamous “Wanna go take a peek?” “Nope. But I’ll come along if you do…” about going to see what the music is about the first time) but I think this comes from a bit of a different place. Douglas tests the waters with what he says because he fundamentally trusts his wife’s judgment over his own, seemingly, and because he doesn’t want to go against her. But Andrew speaks like this because his mask is still so far up in episode 1, especially when we don’t see him from his perspective, so he’s still very much shifting responsibility for what they do onto Ashley because he doesn’t want to accept it. It’s not that Andrew especially trusts Ashley’s judgment, clearly not, given how much he doubts and insults her plans and motives in later episodes, but if she makes the decisions, then it’s just not his fault if things go wrong.

Or once again, to summarise, Douglas lets Renee be responsible for his actions and opinions because he trusts her and because he wants his thoughts to align with hers, whereas Andrew lets Ashley be responsible for his actions and seemingly at fault for his opinions only when it’s both most convenient for him to have her to blame, and when he’s willing to entertain her as actually Ashley – when he’s having enough fun with her to actually want to hear her thoughts.

Because if there’s one big thing that stops Andrew from being an extension of Ashley, it’s that most of the time, he doesn’t see her as her own person. Most of the time, if anyone’s an extension of anyone, she’s just some extension of him, as he’s the stand-in mother, father, boyfriend, whatever the fuck she feels like that day to her, whilst he consistently dehumanises and infantilises her. He can’t be the extension of someone he views as never having grown out being a child at the best of times, and as simply an “it” – some kind of object that can’t be consistent because it doesn’t have its own thoughts – at the worst. And when she attempts to force him into that position – when she chains him up or puts him away in the toy box – he’s miserable, because he is only willing to be Ashley’s if it’s on his terms.

does anyone else get's bothered by the fact that evotars are called AI's? I mean, from a purely technical standpoint they are. their entire existence relies on operation of the CrossWorlds servers (or, potentially, Instatainment servers in general), their abilities are contained within the game, but, like... doesn't AI usually means "entirely made by x"? like it's an intelligence not because it's borrowed/copied, but because it's created to be intelligent, it's intelligence is artificial, and artificial, al least on our planet, means human made, not human "generated". it's like taking a photo, printing it out and saying that the printed object is entirely man-made, which, i mean, is true, there's a lot of human effort that came into it but in essence, the fact that light bounces off differently from various materials, the way light reacts to lenses with all kinds of properties, the chemistry oh physics that come into play for the image to be captured — these that make the photo possible. real photos aren't machine generated. based on the "hidden mother" photography trend in the victorian era...i wanted to finish it for mother's day but life happened LOL it is what it is <3 i'm a bit sad i couldn't debut my van zieks mama design though 🥲 she looks severe but she's very loving. in contrast to yukari, she's actually an airhead lol (in a charming way...in a gap moe kind of way dare i say lmao)

i'm not entirely satisfied with her design aside from her hairstyle, i'm wondering if her dress should be a dark blue instead... it might be fun to add sewn-in roses above the ruffles to make it look a bit more "extra".

Outside of her motherly adoration (and the rose-tinted codependency glasses) while alive what actually were Jocosa’s thoughts on Theo’s contributions and long term lineage goals for him, say, in comparison to what her mother or father’s were for her?

Any previously living relatives distant or otherwise Theo might have somewhat cognizant memory of cohorting with at any point like the grandparents?

tickled by the thought Jocosa might’ve been at some point obliged by tradition/social responsibilities to have hosted a sort of public home mansion soiree dedicated to a teen Theo’s ‘coming of age’ presentation and having to somewhat laboriously nudge the stubborn teen into at least pretending he has the capacity to stand being in same room as his father or god forbid some other ceremonial father-son type ritual borne of patriarchal society.

ie: Well wishes handshake, Father-Son group attendance game hunting, Father publicly gifting the ‘new’ man a required acknowledgment item as show of mutual respect, etc…

Legacy and Expectations

In theory, what was expected of Jocosa and Theo by their parents was much the same. Be raised with lessons in history, etiquette and magic to maintain the family land and position, enter an arranged marriage, produce heirs to the lineage, etcetera. The difference is in how well that was accomplished.

Jocosa was raised with no illusions that she was anything other than a load-bearing branch on the family tree, primped and educated and trained to make her equipped to beget more branches and maintain the estate until the next generation would take over. She was married off almost as soon as she came of age and set to work on producing heirs. Obeisance was the primary trait expected of her and she learned very quickly to be silent, do as commanded and bide her time until she was the one who wore the crown.

Ideally, Jocosa wanted her son to follow in her footsteps. Uphold the family legacy, have children with a woman of her choosing, act in accord with tradition and continue to elevate the family name to its rightful position of dignity and power. Her love for him told her that he could do anything he set his brilliant mind to, and that is what she would insist to him. But she always knew he had issues.

Despite her genuine affection for him and respect for his intelligence, Jocosa understood that Theo was not the ideal heir. Beyond his physical problems, he was fast-tempered, terrible at diplomacy, ill-equipped to handle courtship, prone to fits of nerves and paranoia, and needed to be watched like a hawk around sharp objects. But perhaps with more of her guidance, more time, he'd be ready. Of course, she didn't get more time. Her health declined dramatically and Theo directed all of his attention towards helping her and trying to get her well again.

Some part of her saw how he took charge of her care, taking on the responsibility as readily as a knight at arms and thought here's the man I always knew you were. But she still had doubts, and a persistent fear that she was leaving him too soon, worried about what he'd do without her. She just had to hope he'd manage without her.

Well. That didn't work out as she hoped.

Theo's Immediate Family

His maternal grandparents were alive and living in the manor when he was a small child. They both passed away when he was still quite young, so his memories of them are vague. He has the (accurate) impression that they were not fond of him.

Theo's paternal grandparents, aunts and uncles are still around, but he never met them and wouldn't recognize them if he did (only hearing their last name would make him realize they were related).

"Coming-of-Age"

As for a coming-of-age presentation, even if his parents had planned on such a thing, being ejected from his school following The Incident put the kibosh on any public appearances for long while. After he was expelled from education, he spent the rest of his teenage years hiding in his room, unable to bear the humiliation of his failure and stress of social interaction. Jocosa didn't press him to leave the house out of concern for his wellbeing and a desire to let the scandal blow over before he showed his face in polite society again, while Leonard was content to just to try and forget about him for a while (if he had it his way, he would have sent Theo to an institution for some kind of treatment or just to be rid of him for a while, but the lady of the house refused that).

He only started leaving the house again in his twenties, to accompany his mother and father on their trips to the city and social events in an attempt to learn how to manage their business and affairs on his own once that became his responsibility (so much for that). So he did not have a grand "coming out," he just gradually started to become more and more of an unwelcome presence in the social scenes his parents were involved in as an adult. And then he disappeared from society again in his mid-twenties. Nobody missed him.

@grinningjackal asked me about what scents my detectives would be as candles. i got really extra with it before i realized they actually meant actual candle scents and not some romance novel drivel. so! i decided to research, as i know nothing about candles scents.

in the end of this i now know next to nothing about fragrances. but i hope this will be interesting. i found it kind of fun. Since I tend to get long, I decided to break this down and give each character their own post. And unlike the engagement ring 'series' I will finish this one in a week. Hopefully. Maybe in a couple of days! [Also, this will have 0 sources attached bc I forgot to save some but I do have a few if you want them!!]

Andy

Erkan was a struggle because there are so many scents I felt could exhibit different parts of him, but from what I gather they don't seem to go together. I wanted to show Andy the introvert, Andy the loyal dog, Andy the vengeance seeker, but also Andy who is loyal and loves to garden and will make you spaghetti if you show up at his house in the middle in the night because being a loyal dog means loving that much. I wanted something to display he is driven, observant, distant, but also selectively warm. Ugh. Greens [grass] don't seem to blend with florals [lily] much? But apparently Jasmine goes with everything? It was giving me a headache. In the end I settled on four for him [when I initially was going to do 2-3]. I don't know if it would smell good, but

Tobacco, Musk, Ozone, and Jasmine.

I picked Tobacco, for obvious reasons. He's a smoker, lol. I picked Jasmine because in most lives Andy is a florist. And I felt ozone and musk had a certain je ne se quois that fit him. There were other scents that have certain vibes - like Tonka is a sweetish-nutty wood smell that a sort of charming, intriguing vibe ... apparently - but I liked that in the end, I managed to pick scents that I feel are in relation to Andy. [Though I REALLY wish I could bully Rum and/or Coffee into this but that felt too much].

Tobacco: Apparently does NOT smell like cigarette smoke [I don't know if I'm relieved or disappointed by this]. It seems to be categorized as a 'dry wood', but I've seen it placed under leathery/distinctive and regular wood smell. It is stated, in various sites, as sweet. And I've even seen it called a 'comforting' scent --this checks off that selective warmth aspect. It is also described as a scent that is 'masculine', invoking bravado, sexiness, mysteriousness, etc. I chose it for Andy because the fragrance seems to bring to mind a kind of edgy [roflmao!] vibe, ambition, yet quiet strength. Definitely the type of scent that you want flowing in your room if you want to give off 'wears expensive suits 24/7'. Like, dang that bih successful!

Jasmine: Jasmine seems to have it's own musky undertone but another reason it is delightful is because it has a bright vibe that - from what I read - definitely made me think of something akin to fresh cut grass ... something heady but delicate at the same time. Like a fragile, lonely man. I'm just kidding. Haha. Like a murderer who ears white suits. I've seen Jasmine associated with an alluring, gracious vibe. I picked it for Andy because it was connected to the words of decisiveness, sophistication, and empatheticness.

Ozone: I picked it because it has an 'atmospheric', kind of icy smell.. Andy is distant, introverted. That's as deep as I went with that one lol.

Musk: I considered going with white musk, because from what I gather is when it loses it's floral scent it just sorta smells fresh and clean. And I felt that would be a good mix with the ozone and jasmine --- however, though I liked the idea of one scent transforming to something else [maybe showing a true face?~] and Andy is clean in his attire, and he certainly presents himself as someone worth knowing [to have lingering around~ as it were], I decided to go the earthier way. Plus musk and tobacco seem to blend well and give off that smokiness~ I'd probably go with a more woody flavor of musk, something still fresh but more straightforward? IDK. I stopped looking into it ANYWAY, musk also evoke thoughts of warmth [lol], intensity yet reliable, someone enigmatic. Like tobacco it also gives that Boss vibe~

So, I feel an Andy candle is definitely the type of candle you would light on while studying for some intense test, get your head in the game while also not revving up your anxiety -- or maybe in the office of a CEO wert lmao.

Hope you don't mind this random, unprompted ask, I've just been going through your hunger games tag and I don't think I've seen anything about gale/peeta? So now I'm curious about your thoughts on their side of the triangle 👀

ive left this ask in the oven for a few days bc i had to let it cook, and now i return with my thoughts

my biggest thing about gale and peeta is that i really don't think they have the kind of animosity fandom tends to push. like. in the end, forgetting the love triangle and katniss and everything, gale and peeta just don't Know Each Other. to gale, peeta is just the youngest mellark brother, and to peeta, gale is only significant in that he's katniss's best friend. and every single time there's an opportunity for them to interact in the narrative, outside of the moments with hijacked peeta, they get along pretty well!! gale has his infamous "it'd be better if he were easier to hate" moment, and no matter how people may interpret peeta's reactions during their conversation in tigris's basement, the fact remains that peeta had initiated it and katniss even comments that they're comfortable with each other "almost like friends".

all of this to say, in another universe i really think they could have been friends. in terms of my post-canon everlarkthorne world, i imagine that they're the first ones to reach out to each other and reconnect because they don't have the amount of complicated history with each other that they do with katniss. it'd be a lot easier for them to let bygones be bygones and agree to "start fresh" without some of the past tension and baggage. this isnt to say they'd be completely without conflict - in particular, i think peeta is very passive in a way that gale isn't, which lends itself to him unintentionally enabling harmful behaviors just bc he doesn't call them out, which gale is Not a fan of. and i feel like while peeta is ultimately understanding of how bad gale's mental state was at the time and that gale is now making an effort in making up for his behavior, he also isn't that thrilled by how gale treated katniss in mockingjay (which is also hypocritical of him to a point, but you know, not guilty by plead of hijacking)

anyway. this is my long-winded way of saying that i think that gale/peeta has a lot of potential to it but it's kind of hidden underneath a bunch of hangups that come from the narrative. otherwise i like to believe they're good friends post-canon, and possibly more .... ? 😏

Tried my best for this lol recently my creativity just went down so I don't have many good prompts to give.

Oh lmao I might steal this title for one of two fics I have already started.

One of which being an omegaverse au where yqy presents as an omega right before they ascend and now there is a scramble to marry him off. The night he presented he went to QJP seeking SJ to claim him and SJ, despite wanting very badly to, had a paranoid fit and did the responsible thing and dumped him on Qian Cao Peak for them to deal with. I haven't decided if SJ is an alpha or an omega pretending to be an alpha, either way, it was an aggressively horny night of regret for him.

Then at the following peak lord meeting yqy is noticeably absent, the sect leader brings up his presentation and how, traditionally, in the event of the QDP head disciple being an omega the first pick of potential spouses will come from the ascending peak lords before opening it up to other sects. The sect leader is very matter of fact about it, the other peak lords are a little exhausted having to deal with yet another thing before ascension, and their head disciples are actually pretty horrified. YQY is in heat and here they are talking about marrying him off!! Without him!!

and this is where you think, oh muse, so predictable! now it's time for SJ to angst and wallow as the tragic romantic lead of this fic! WRONG! This fic is about Qi Qingqi and her determination to 1) root out whomst the FUCK rejected yqy for being an omega 2) find a suitable match for him amongst their martial siblings and if that fails 3) MARRY HIM HERSELF in iconic wlw mlm solidarity.

I think, to shift the world accordingly, her peak has the highest concentration of omegas but still opts to have a very op alpha peak lord "for their protection." I think most of the hall masters would be betas for respectability reasons there too.

Sj is, of course, still wallowing in the background but in such a sketchy way that QQQ is thinking "god anyone would be better suited than him"
