when writing fanfiction, the number of situations you never thought you would be in that you suddenly find yourself in can be very strange. for instance I am writing a play, as in, a completely orginal work in the form of a play, simply bc I need my characters in a fic I’m writing to write one and then act in it. a play which will only figure at the end of the fic and probably not in its entirety. what the hell man

Tomarry AU where Tom HATES this book he read because his favourite character dies a miserable death. So what if his favorite character was a no-named side villain? Why does it matter that he only had like seven lines (seven is Tom's favourite number anyways)? He was still gorgeous, smart and strong and beautiful — and it doesn't matter that others think he isn't all that because they would never know him— understand him like TOM DOES.

An AU where Tom has a healthy obsession with a character named Harry Potter, a no named baron's son who was the first to go against the king (MC's father, and the mc who is incidentally known as Draco Malfoy, ahem anyways); he tries to “poison” him. But he gets caught or to be more precise he ends up sacrificing himself for the common girl Hermione Granger (the female lead, I'm sorry guys but imagine the fucking drama.) who gets blamed for his transgressions.

But that is not why Tom falls for this weak villain, no — it's because he respects how this no-named orphan became a baron on his own two feet without anyone being there for him especially in a world where old money and title is everything— and he hates how he had to give his life for the MC to notice the female lead? (Harry is better looking and smarter than her anyways — Tom, in an online forum perhaps.)

Anyways, now imagine Tom dying (he hated it so yes he ends up looking for immorality anyways.) and waking up in the world he hated. Now imagine, Tom Riddle, waking up in the body of a Duke who wasn't even given a name in the novel. (He would know because he has a photographic memory, ok? It's totally not because he read it more than 14 times) and then saying fuck it and owning it.

Just think, Tom taking over the world slowly with his worldly knowledge while trying to keep Harry alive because even though he was right about Harry being smart; the guy treats his life like Draco treats his money - you get the idea.

Au where Harry is constantly struggling bc of Tom's good looks and gestures of affection. He totally has a crush but really REALLY doesn't know how to deal with it.

He's seen either frowning or looking constipated whenever he's by Tom's side and people naturally mistake it as distate/hatred (which technically wouldn't have been wrong back in his old timeline).

In reality, Harry is so down bad for his past nemesis that he's always close to hyperventilating at the proximity between them. With Tom manoeuvring situations behind the scenes so that they can constantly be near each other/are partners in every class they're in, Harry has no chance to relax his heart at all and thus, suffers. It just so happens that his face, misleadingly, reflects that pain. Lmao.

Recently checked back up on ATLWETD to see if it had updated and followed the tumblr thread here. Imagine my surprise seeing all of the wonderful snippets and asks you answered. Tom using the mood stone? I almost forgot that was a thing. And finding out that Tom was just being a possesive/calculating bastard when he took Harrys food is embarassing to me since my guess was so far off. I thought that Tom inferred that Harry suspected him of poisoning/ truth seruming his food when he told Tom "Happy Poisoning".

Anyways, I decided it was finally my time to step up and praise you like the glorious writer you are. How on earth you could ever believe that your works arent as creative or as plot heavy as other tomarry works is beyond me. To me, your fics have lovely foreshadowing that makes me pay very close attention to anything that is mentioned offhandedly by a character because in your works everything means something. (Like seriously, one detail I missed in WHGTB on the first read was Harry reading the description of the book Tom was going to use to bond him and you stuffing permanent bonding inbetween fertility and necromancy. You had Harry misdirect us by having him muse about necromancy so we wouldn't notice. And you're right, I didn't)

And the humanity and characterization that you give to any character you write? Hell, i'd say you give them more layers than the origional authors. I always know that you won't make the characters make stupid and out of character actions just to advance the plot.

My experience with your writing started with WHGTB (my first convincing tomarry fic btw, you were the one who snagged me). After that, I trailed after your content like a lost puppy. I consumed your hannigram fics without having a spec of knowledge other than "haha cannibal eats the rude". I have now watched the telltale John Doe/Bruce Wayne playthroughs on youtube and rewatched the lego batman movie for the first time since i saw it in theaters when it came out. A Rule for a Rule is shaping up to be the best thing that happened to batjokes (outside of Half Way Across). I've even tenatively read through your Black Butler work, which I was hesitant to look at given the age gap and having never watched the anime. Should have never doubted that your approach to their relationship would make sense. You make an anime which could be categorized as ridiculous (I apologize, I have no nostalgic memories of this anime holding me back. I read your fic first, the anime can't compare) into something psychological and beautiful. Just so so real.

Anywho, there's my small (because I could genuinely write an analytical essay on your works and enjoy it) love letter to your writing.

Stay safe angel, it's unfortunate that I can't do anything to help you or your country. Even more disgusting that my country could help if they gave half a shit but won't. Hi! Thank you so much for such a lengthy, wonderful ask - I have a few more unanswered ones in my ask box, and I'm so delighted that my stories evoke so many thoughts and feelings in my readers!

Funnily, quite a few people thought that Tom sharing Harry's food and drinking from his cup is related to Harry's 'happy poisoning'! This never occured to me. I admit I love when such stuff happens because it proves how a text is its own thing, a living organism, something that the author and every reader can have vastly different interpretations of. In this case, yes, I intended for Tom to keep testing the intimate boundaries and to see how much Harry would allow, to gauge what exact type of relationship they used to share. Slowly turning him into a possessive, obsessed monster in love is such a delight.

I'm so gratified that you enjoy the foreshadowing I'm trying to build! I do love it, and I can tell that in ATLWETD, the seeds of the largest plot twists and the ending have already been planted. It's difficult to recognize them without knowing the rest, but if someone re-reads the whole story after it's done, these little hints should become obvious.

Also, it's so flattering that WHGTB became the first Tomarry story you really liked! Really, it's an honor, considering how big this part of fandom is and how many brilliant stories fill it. And knowing that you followed my fics across the fandoms despite not being a part of them - wow! I'm speechless! You honestly made me blush, I'm so happy to hear all this.

I really dislike the trope where Harry , disgusted, turns on "the light side" because he had to die for the horcrux to be destroyed (but if you love it that's very good! Read what you like!!).

Because it really makes a disservice to Harry's character. Harry isn't afraid of dying, Harry is ready to die to protect the people he loves. To save innocents from LV's killing spree and terror regime.

He was ready to die in the first book, when he chose, freely, to oppose LV instead of letting him have the stone. He was ready to risk his life to save Ginny in CoS. And so go on.

Like his parents, like Severus, like Regulus if you want, like everyone fighting against LV he knew he was risking his life and accepted it. Because the cause was more important. Defeating LV was more important than their own life. Everyone opposing LV thought so.

So yeah, Harry whining about being a weapon or a martyr really does a disservice to his character. Harry willing to self -sacrifice is one of the core traits of his character . Why taking it out?

The basis of Lily's power protection is her sacrifice. Harry is strong as her, willing to die to protect other people.

Harry willing and nobly sacrificed himself to give others a chance against LV. Why destroying an element so important for the plot and the characterization?

No mentioning the delicious clash between self-sacrifice and self-conservation in Tomarry fics.

LV being all mocking of Albus' plans (and hating then) while Harry is like "yes, I would have died (killed by you btw) to stop you. Why is it a surprise?" .

Connected souls (Post Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows fic)

Yes, you read it well. Another fic idea, this time for Harry Potter!

After the war, Harry expected his life to get better. And it was supposed to be better. He was dating Ginny, his friends were alive, and Voldemort, his archenemy, was dead. Everything was supposed to be okay.

But it wasn't.

A few months after the end of the war, he woke up screaming at night, in the arms of Ginny. She wanted to calm him, but he couldn't calm down until she went downstairs to grab a glass of water. They thought it would be a one-time thing, but after a few days the same thing happened. And the next day. And the following day. It didn't stop. Eventually, Ginny, Ron and Hermione told Harry to go to a Mind Healer. At first he wasn't okay with it, but he decided to go because the pain he felt was almost unbearable (and because since the war he felt empty and apathetic).

He thought mind healing would help him, but it didn't work. Nor talking to the Mind Healer nor potions nor magic. Nothing mind healers used to help wizards/witches made him feel less empty or less apathetic. And since mind healing didn't work, Hermione told him to see a Muggle therapist too (obviously, a friend of her who wouldn't think he was insane). But that didn't work neither, and his friends tried to understand him, but Ginny, Ron and Hermione thought that he wasn't trying. For them, he should have overcomed the trauma of the war (after all, they did it, why Harry couldn't?). Because of their reaction, Harry decided to stay away from them. He didn't want to make their life hard nor want to be a burden.

Harry went to the muggle world, thinking that could help him better than other things. He stayed for a few months there, and he went to bars and had sex with different people. Not because he wanted to do those things, but because he wanted to feel something more than pain or emptiness. And he did feel something more than pain or emptiness. But it wasn't permanent. Every good feeling he felt vanished after a few minutes, and the apathy set in again.

One day, when he was in a bar, it was a surprise for him meeting Draco there. At first they didn't get along very well because of the whole Hogwarts rivalry thing- but after seeing Harry broken (a shell of the person he was before), Draco changed his opinion about him. He became his friend, and eventually his lover, and although he didn't mind about Harry waking up in the middle of the night screaming (it worried him, but he didn't get angry for it), Harry went away before he could become a burden to Draco.

When he was at his lowest point, after two years, Death appeared in front of him. Death told him there was only a person that could make the pain dissapear. Tom Riddle. The reason? The apathy he was feeling was because of the Horcrux, because his soul was so used to have the Horcrux that losing it kinda- broke his soul. And the only way of healing his soul was connecting it to Tom soul's again. And he also was the only option to overcome the trauma of the war.

When Death brought back Voldemort (as in making him be alive agin)- [in his Voldemort form, but a humanized version of him (with hair, nose, eyebrows and not pale as a snake). Btw I have to say this isn't a Tomarry/Harrymort fic] he discovered his enemy was also suffering because of their soul connection. And Harry prefered suffering rather than having to ease the pain of Voldemort.

That's why Voldemort & Harry's relationship was so bad at first. Voldemort wanted to stop his own suffering, not caring about Harry's suffering, and Harry decided to deal with his own suffering instead of easing Voldemort's suffering. One day, when Voldemort tried to force the connection of their souls, both of them were thrown away from the other, and Death told them that their soul connection had to be consented by both of them (like "Your souls can't connect if one of you doesn't approve")

Again and again Voldemort tried to convince Harry of giving up, but everytime he tried to force their connection, he got hurt for the "non-consent" of his actions. But eventually he didn't try to force the connection for himself. Eventually, he started to feel compassion towards Harry. Eventually, he started to care about his crying and he started to be concerned. Eventually, he wanted to force the connection because he couldn't stand Harry's suffering anymore. He didn't expect to have mercy on his enemy, but Harry was completely destroyed inside, not only because his soul was broken, but because his heart was also broken. And for some reason, seeing his enemy like that wasn't as funny as he thought it would be.

After failing a few times, he took a different approach. Instead of showing his strength and his """evilness""" in front of Harry, he tried to act calm. He acted sympathetic and kind (he didn't like to act "weak" in front of people but he would do anything to make Harry's pain disappear). And it worked. But it didn't work like he thought it would. Harry gave up and broke down, but while he was holding Harry in his arms, he felt everything Harry was feeling, and he noticed the pain he felt since he was brought back from hell was only a part of Harry's pain.

If the pain he felt when their souls weren't connected was a 5, the pain he felt with the connection was a 9-10. And he couldn't stop thinking about how that stupid selfless kid could hold back his pain for so long (because deep down he knew that pain wasn't just caused by the non-connection of their souls). He hugged Harry tighter and although he wasn't good with words, he tried to do his best to comfort Harry. And when Tom got away and asked him "Are you okay?" and Harry said "You're better at comforting people than I thought you would be" before letting go a laugh, for the first time in years, he knew Harry finally started to heal.

After the last scene- there is supposed to be a love story between Draco and Harry and a friendship/"platonic soulmate" relationship between Tom and Harry- but how do you do that it's up to whatever person who wants to write this AU.

This fic is a gem. It starts with Harry not being the BWL and just doing whatever he wants. And the way Voldemort and Harry's relationship develops is just lovely. The ending fucking floored me. The side characters, and the fact that Harry ends up opening a shop that ends up being a help for all shop because harry is Harry and he still can't see injustice without helping, and that's how Voldemort finds him lmao

The author's hands are magic. This is an alternative universe where Tom ends up becoming a florist and Harry's animagus is a hummingbird (hint hint). This is just fluffy galore and Tom trying to get Harry's attention. They are so cute and the way the author's describes situation and the way they write their characters is absolutely beautiful.

Erosion by Remaya in ao3 (can't link it, since you need an account to read it)

Is an absolute delight of a read. It's a Greek mythology au and everything about this is just brilliant. It's cracky at times (A LOT of times actually) but also is balanced with angst. I love the imagery and how Vee and Harry's relationship develops.

This is just pure fluff with everything right in the world. This is just Tom realizing he is in love. This is just them getting together and being happy. This is my happiness boost fic. This is a world where tomarry gets their happy ending and are just living their life and I love it so much. The writing is REALLY good too and their relationship is believable as well. I love it so much.

This is such a fucking underrated fic and I hate that. It's glorious and the way the author world builds is perfection. I love how they all use their powers and I love Harry and Tom. This is a mutant au btw. They all have superpowers and they are hated by normal people. This is an amazing fic and I wish it was more popular.

This is one of my favourite harry time travels au and it is completed‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️ and I love everything about this. And the way it is written is cracky, yet so believable, yet so yeah that can actually/will probably happen. And my favorite part, is the ending and how they slowly fall in love. And it's just perfect I swear.

Yes, another from Ailora LMAO but I love their fics. This one is really special to my heart. This fic is where Harry isn't someone special, he is just him, and yet there is a prophecy made. And now, Tom who thinks Harry is going to end up killing him — decides to befriend him so that he gets to know what is the power harry has that Tom knows not. Of course it backfires lmao BUT my favorite thing about this fic is how Tom falls for Harry, and how it is all the small things that make up Harry Potter makes to fall headfirst.

EVERYTHING by Strange_Soulmates is beautiful. They have a lot of fluffy fics and some THOUGH not completed has such great premises That YOU can't look away and I love them all seriously.

Currently 4, though there should be another arriving before the end of the year

2. What’s your total AO3 word count?

278,494 but with me being the kind of person to not post WIPs, that number is not representative of how many words I've actually written.

I just checked all my docs, and my unpublished WIPs come out to 460 393 words so far (across 4 different long fics and 3 oneshots).

So my actual word count is 738 887. what the fuck. i started writing this year btw (in february i think) so this is probably a sign of something worrying lol

3. What fandoms do you write for?

Harry Potter

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

I only have 4 fics posted but the order is : equals in life, let the light in, love is such a dreadful thing (and dread is so lovely), and to hold your life in my decaying hands

5. Do you respond to comments? Why? Why not?

Yes! I just enjoy interacting with people who took the time to read, enjoy, and comment on my fics. People are generally very nice to me too, so it's always a pleasure to chat.

I don't really do angsty endings lol. I suppose I have to say equals in life bc it's bittersweet? but it's not angsty imo

If you asked me this last year I would've said Drarry, and my answer would have been the same over the last ten years. However, I have come to favour Tomarry & Harrymort, I sway more closely to Harrymort between the two but not enough for me to give a definitive answer.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

Er, I didn't count this one in my answer to the word count question but I have a tiny bit of it written. It would've been an eighth year Drarry fic where Harry's struggling through the aftermath of losing Voldemort's soul -- it would've been the most Harrymort coded Drarry fic lmao. But I don't think I'll ever finish it, simply bc my other WIPs are a lot more interesting.

I would say dialogue, and I'm quite good at what I call recall, I rarely forget details about my fics so I like sprinkling in recalls to lots of little details previously mentioned, sometimes so small the reader wouldn't be able to pick them up I think.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Action scenes are the bane of my existence. I'm just Not Good at them. The writing doesn't flow, the scene is badly set up, they're just not my thing. I actually have a WIP I started in the hopes of getting better at action scenes haha.

I'm not that good at describing people. With it being fanfiction I just assume people know what they look like, but even if they do, physical descriptions add so much to the fic, and I should do them more often.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

I'm guilty of this lol. I like doing it in french bc it's fun, but for another fic I had to sprinkle in some italian (i don't speak italian) and it's just stressful (thankfully my beta does understand italian so they helped me). I try not to do it in languages I don't speak.

I'm going to say Harry Potter, but I'm not going to check that. I know that when I was younger I wrote quite a bit of fanfic I kept to myself, and I'm fairly certain the first was Harry Potter. But I also know I wrote some other stuff that I will not be disclosing lol

20. Favourite fics you’ve written?

I have to say it, equals in life (partners in death)

But, I'm very fond of this oneshot I wrote: to hold your life in my decaying hands

And my favourite long fic I've written is If we were lovers, which will hopefully be out before the end of the year.

OK so I did a not-so-little list of questions about fandoms because I needed an excuse to talk and I wanted to do a sort of a recap for 2020.

I had been reading Fairy Tail and One Piece fics before but the first fandom I really got into is Harry Potter!

Well technically I started reading on Skyrock lmao. But the first true platform dedicated to fics I used was FFnet

I think it was Tomarry and Drarry

I'm really focused on the MCU and its fandom currently but I do enjoy content from other fandoms sometimes (like HP, SPOP, Lore Olympus…)

FROSTIRONSTRANGE. Ironstrange and frostiron are my second faves. I discovered frostiron while I was watching the MCU (I mean.... IT'S SO EVIDENT????) and started reading fics about it. Ironstrange was also evident but frostiron was first. For frostironstrange it was with the @frostironstrange blog (and their fic on Ao3) and it's later that I really jumped on the ironstrange and strangefrost wagon.

Yep. I'm very focused on my main ships but I'm always ready to enjoy good content about other ships I like. Especially beautiful fanarts and cool headcanons.

Obviously. I could die for polyships. They make my little heart go doki doki *loud sniffles*. Apart for frostironstrange there is also Draco/Harry/Tom, avengers OT6 (or more), Sam/Steve/Bucky......... Basically if I can polyship I will.

I love the 2012 avengers fics' headcanons. And I think I have a lot of headcanon I like for HP but it's because the fandom basically rewrote the whole universe. HP belongs to the fandom and Mrs Dementor can eat my ass.

I'm firmly pro-ship: ship and let ship, your kink is not my kink and it's okay, I'll never condone harassment and hate in fandoms. I encourage ppl to use tools they have blocking, muting unfollowing, to curate their online experience.

Well 2020 basically brought me everything. A new fandom, a new ship to dedicate my whole soul to. I discovered Ao3 (and THAT'S amazing). I started actively reading and talking in English (very proud). And most of all: I started WRITING FICS and even tried to DRAW. I mean. There was so little content, I had so many ideas for this ship. I decided to start creating the content I searched for. ALSO I COMMISSIONED FOR THE FIRST TIME AN AMAZING FANART SKXJSKXJSK. And I discovered amazing people to talk with and share about ours ships 💖💖💖💖

Huum... It's really rare for me to like a fic writer so much that I go read everything they wrote. But there are some French fic writers in the HP fandoms who's fics I absolutely love (one of them is Magouille on FFnet). And I think I admire Rosae on Ao3 a lot.

I discovered Rosae (@frostironstrange) year! Their works introduced me to frostironstrange, the amount of content and headcanons they created for frostironstrange is truly amazing. It really inspires me and encourages me to create as much content as I want to.

Yep. I'm thinking about several fics. One of them is Vlad Kemenov ou la Vengeance des Potter, a French Harry Potter fic written by Magouille on FFnet. It's truly excellent! It starts as Vlad Kemenov growing up in the Russian magic mafia's circles and the author creates a whole universe around it. The characters, the ideas, the plot, the several political/diplomatic etc intrigues over the years are so well written. It's truly captivating and a fabulous jewel.

There is also The Black Heir by FirePhoenix8 on FFnet, an excellent Tomarry fic in English.

Revenge is so sweet in French by Elisabeth Canden on FFnet. SO GOOD but alas abandoned.

Very known, it's the most famous HP fic but Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality. I only read the first 20 chapters of this last Fic but trust me. In the first chapter I understood why it was one of the most popular HP fic. Genius.

And also An Aunt's love by Emma Lipardi on FFnet in English is excellent as well.

I didn't read a lot this year but I loved:

Iron infinity by DuncanIdaho2014 on FFnet, this is an infinity War fix it fic with Tony being an atrocious Gary Tsu. It's one of the first mcu fics I read and I have a fond spot for epic Gary Tsu (and Mary Sue as well).

Poetic Justice by Limmet. OF COURSE, a true frostiron reference. the first longfic I read in English.

I’m a Snape enthusiast because not only did I relate the most to Severus throughout the entirety of the series, I (pardon the Angsty Teen™️) feel as though he’s immensely misunderstood. People seem to forget that, just like Harry, he was abused in his home, but, unlike Harry, that didn’t stop at school. Harry had Malfoy as a nemesis, but he also had Ron and Hermione as friends. He had the Weasleys. He had Dumbledore. He had people who loved him deeply. Severus truly had no one besides Lily who, by his own mistake, dissolved from his life at a crucial point in time. I think a lot of people don’t realize that not every abused person comes out of the situation as selfless and self-sacrificing as Harry Potter. Harry had to endure dreadful neglect and verbal abuse from the Dursley’s but Hogwarts and the Burrow were his escape. Severus never truly got that.

Now before that’s interpreted by others incorrectly, I’d like to clarify that, yes, Snape is a MAJOR asshat. It’s as clear as day. He knows it. I know it. You know it. Everyone knows it. He’s a vindictive, hateful, and cold character and, no, I don’t like him because I’m an Edge Lord™️, I like him because I understand why he is the way he is. He was hurt by his father in his home. Hurt by the Gryffindor Gang at school (though his sharp tongue and sour attitude didn’t help). He was hurt by Voldemort and his Death Eaters (by his own fault, yes, but think of the course of life that led to him making that decision. It was a mistake that he realized later on, and I feel as though he adequately made up for it. But that’s just my opinion :). ) following school and then later the Order because of their blatant mistrust in him. He’s been hurt his whole life, and though that doesn’t excuse his reprehensible actions throughout the series, it makes me understand the “why” part of it. I really hope I’m making sense. I know that not many share my view on Snape, and my goal isn’t to persuade more people to see things my way. This is solely just to explain my perspective!

I think some criticizers of WHGTB tend to miss something of key importance. There's been a lot of light shed on fanfiction now & the toxic relationships portrayed & romanticised in them, but the issue was that authors were writing these relationships off as normal. I love WHGTB because you don't try to make it seem like something its not. It's dark, obsessive, unhealthy, addictive & unsettling all at once & the characters (particularly Harry) are aware of it. Your writing is amazing btw <3

Thank you, I’m glad to hear you’re enjoying WHGTB! I fully support the ‘if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all’ stance when it comes to fanfiction and art. Whatever issues the work has, regardless of how anything is presented in it, a writer is writing for themselves first and foremost, and it’s almost guaranteed that their creation will find at least one another person who enjoys it. Art is a highly subjective and often personal thing, and we’ll never know why someone writes what they do/why others like it.

And yes, in WHGTB, the relationship is definitely fucked up. In fact, I usually like characters who make each other better despite the darkness involved (like Will and Hannibal or Ciel and Sebastian - or Tomarry in general), but in WHGTB, I think Harry and Tom would be better off without meeting each other. Harry’s morality would stay unchanged and he could find a simpler and easier happiness while Tom (if he was still taken from the orphanage & raised by someone else) could climb to power without hurting as many people as he did because of his obsession. But they met, they love each other, and they are both obsessed, so there is no going back now.
