How to credit artists

TL;DR: Tell us the name of the person who made it.

Hi, all. There are instances when reposting art or using someone else's graphics (i.e. banners, dividers, etc) is acceptable, with the understanding that proper credit is given to the original creator. However, a lot of folks don't seem to know how to give proper credit to artists. I will explain here.

The most important thing to know is that the primary purpose of giving credit to the original creator is NOT to point out that you didn't make it. While that can be good to know, that's not the main objective. The primary purpose is to tell people who the actual creator is. If what you've written does not show people how to find the original creator, it is not proper credit. Examples of improper credit include:

"credit to the original artist!"

"found on Pinterest/Google/etc."

"art not mine"

Those do not tell me who made whatever it is you're reusing. That is not sufficient information. I should be able to read it and tell who made it.

So how do we credit people properly? Some artists may have very particular ways they'd like to be credited, in which case they will usually have this information listed somewhere, but most don't. If they're on tumblr, crediting them is as simple as listing their username/URL. If you were to credit me, for example, you would just say "art by @carbomcoco". Boom, that's it. We don't need a whole MLA-style bibliography if it's a social media post, just enough to tell us who made it. Contextualize it however is appropriate:

"credit" <- with a hyperlink pointing to the account or original upload

If they're not on this website, it's very similar. Just add a slash after the @ or omit it so that it doesn't erroneously tag someone's tumblr, and say what website they're on.

If the artist you're citing isn't a social media person, just list their name and the title of the piece (if it has one). Maybe link their portfolio if they have one and the site lets you use hyperlinks.

Does that make sense? Tell us who made it. Most of the time, that's all you gotta do. Question time

Q: What if I don't know who made the original artwork?

A: Try a reverse image search such as Google Lens. This will often help you find the original upload. If you can't find the original, there's a fairly good chance that you don't have the artist's permission to reuse it without crediting them. Furthermore, the more times it gets reuploaded without credit, the harder it's going to be for people to find who the original artist was. Now your post is probably showing up in reverse image searches too, and serving as another dead end. Someone else might save the image from your post and reupload it again to another site, once again without credit. Stop the spiral early.

Q: Why do I have to say who made it? Isn't it enough that people know it wasn't me?

A: Unfortunately, no. For artists who take commissions or sell prints, severing the connection between the art and the artist can impact their income. People can't support the creators of their favorite works if they don't know who that person is. Even for artists who don't make money from their art, if a piece of theirs goes viral and they aren't cited as the creator, they won't get the praise they deserve for making something that a lot of people really like. Sure, it's handy for people to know it wasn't you so that they don't erroneously try to commission you or anything, but the primary purpose is still to direct people to the original creator so that they can actually use that information.

Q: What about the fandom gifs and banners that I use to make my fanfiction/headcanon post look more aesthetic? Should I credit those, too?

A: Yes, even those. Don't just scroll through the tags, save gifs that gif-makers upload, and use them for your own posts without credit. Unless they've explicitly said you don't have to credit them, you should credit them. Again, reuploading uncredited material will make it even more difficult for people to figure out who made the original image. If crediting wrecks the aesthetic of your post, learn how to make your own gifs and graphics.

So, to recap:

If you didn't make it, say who did. Google is not an acceptable answer. Pinterest is not an acceptable answer. "not me" Is not an acceptable answer. "the original artist" is not an acceptable answer. Give a name.

If you don't know who made it, find out.

If you can't find out, don't reupload it.

Hi I'm Ni (She/They; 20↑), I love Digimon in general, but the series I work with more is the OG Adventure series. I'm Ace/Panromantic, please use she/her or they/them pronouns. I'm a scaredy-cat kind of person who gets nervous and anxious at first, but once we start bonding I'll drop that and be more of myself. I also get excited when writing a thread, so I tend to reply hella quickly while I still have in mind what to say. Don’t rush me, but give me small reminders if I forget to reply since there’s a chance I actually forgot to or thought it was your turn when in fact I hadn’t replied in the first place.

I also draw. Like, a lot. Quite compulsive. Some of my non-canon-material icons are my own art. And I feel a bit uncomfortable by using other people’s fanart WITHOUT their permission. So yeah, I do my own doodled icons… When I get energy for those.

Well apparently @de-is-me came up with this and it sounds fun so let’s get started. 👀

Even though i am so happy about being ace and grey-romantic here I sometimes feel ashamed of it irl. It’s mostly because my brother is one of those guys that just go around having new girlfriends every week and my parents sort of praise him for that.

And being me, not even having held someone’s hand romantically at my 17 years, well… it feels wrong. But it’s only occasionally, I still love being like this and will continue to be proud of my identity :)

Question 1: If you could become any character from your fandom(s), who would you choose and why?

Answer:

From the sides pobably Virgil, because he can just stand there being emo and dark and lazy and no one will judge him or hate him because of that.

I’m not quite part of the Harry Potter fandom but if I could ever be one fictional character from anywhere I’d love to be Luna Lovegood. (No bias because of the name lol)

.-. I can’t it’s too many people. First of all people with whom I have chatted with through messages. Y'all are all so cool and I already know you a little enough to know that. Apart from them uuh well the squishes or whatever they should be called.

I’ve drawn a couple things… and wrote some other couple things… but eeeh the butterfly sides is perhaps my favorite. I loved drawing them! It was fun and sweet and relaxing ^-^ (even if I forgot Roman’s antennas please forgive me)

Answer:

You sweet people saying such nice things because they always lift me up after having bad days.

Answer:

One insecurity?? How do I pick? Eeehm probably my intelligence. I feel so stupid all the time, and before I compensated it with good grades but now I don’t get those either so I feel stupid at everything.

Best feature, duck. I am? Empathetic? I think… Hmm or maybe that I try my best at being open minded and learning about me and about other people and to be supportive.

Discontinuing My Taglist

what the title says. basically, there’s just way too many people on my taglist for me to keep up with it. plus, it takes a lot of my time to simply tag people because i have to click every. single. url. to make sure it works. and when you have 200+ accounts to tag, it’s a lot. not to mention, tags sometimes don’t work, then the case where blogs change users, and some blogs you can’t tag at all.

SO! with that said, i found a different and much easier route to replace my taglist. if you still want to be up-to-date whenever i post a new fic, go follow @t-lostinlibrary and turn on notifications! DO NOT WORRY about getting flooded with random content because in that side blog i will only reblog my fics and my fics only. the blog is genuinely just an alternative to a taglist so that those who want to keep up with my works can follow that blog instead and get notified whenever i post a new fic. it will also serve as a compilation so everything i have written so far but mostly in the future will be on that blog so if you scroll through it all you’ll see are my fics and nothing else. so yes, all my craziness and unhinge moments will only remain on this blog.

i am still posting all my fics on my main blog: t-lostinworlds. i’ll only reblog my writing on the sideblog for notification purposes.

the blog is NOT a fic rec blog. all the fics i’ve read will still be reblogged on my main and tagged as: #fic rec. specific tags as to who the fic is about can be found on my main masterlist.

this applies to all my works. i.e. one-shots, blurbs, smaus, etc.

top three fictional universes you’d like to live in: i remember thinking about this a lot the last time i answered this but hmm. currently i’d say dmbj still bc that world is fascinating AND i would love to talk to the characters. mass effect would be the second one currently bc i miss those games and the space stuff is super cool! and the third one would be assassin’s creed rogue bc that is my fave ac game and i like the northern sea and the places in it AND i could probably be one of abstergo’s employees instead and just test/play those simulation games haha

Last Song: am currently listening to my playlist with just everything so i have Andrew Belle’s The Enemy playing right now (also I only just now realized that Andrew Belle also sings Pieces which is one of my fave songs? my bff linked that to me after it played in some tv series she was watching)

Last Movie Last Stream: i didn’t want to mention the same movie again or skip this question and i’ve wanted to talk about this anyway so! i watched Liu Chang’s bday live last night :’D it was so much fun even if i couldn’t understand anything. it was just nice to watch him being himself and have fun and chill with his fans. also the songs were amazing ;; i cried with Liu Sang’s character song as well as the ending. and all the while i couldn’t turn my gaze away from his eyes! he has such pretty eyes and they were absolutely Sparkling throughout the whole stream, it was so nice :’)

Currently Reading: Devotions by Mary Oliver (i adore her poems! they’re a very nice change after Siken haha) and then some uni stuff for a course about culture and mental health plus my thesis

Currently Watching: Douluo Continent, Word of Honor, The Long Ballad 

all of these are amazing and make me feel different things! i started Douluo Continent just a while ago and am now on ep 16 i think? it’s been very pretty and very chill and i watch it during the weekend while i wait for new episodes to the other two :’D it’s nice to see Xiao Zhan again and i’ve enjoyed the rpg game type of feeling in it? the group of seven is doing amazing and it’s interesting to watch them craft their team work! Word of Honor again has reached the ending and i just hold my breath with it. am not too far gone with it so i am not getting as heavy feelings about it as i probably could but i enjoy it  alot still and i do cry at times ^^ and then The Long Ballad has just blown me away! i didn’t expect to love it this much and be this invested in it but everything about it has been such a positive surprise and it keeps making me super emotional! i love the characters and the story and the romances even! it’s a great accomplishment for me. also yes i cry on the daily bc of hao du and bc of ashile sun’s hair haha

(i am also rewatching Ultimate Note kind of and been thinking about getting into rewatching Reboot bc it has been on my list ever since i finished it)

What is antipoetry to you: okay hmm i had to google this too and have to agree with Kiddo here. i don’t have strong feelings about poetry tbh, i wasn’t into poetry that much before maybe a bit over year ago? Siken has really blown me away haha. but i have always loved song lyrics which i never thought as poetry but then Kiddo said to me that they consider them poetry and yeah ok. i agree? so idk poetry can be whatever i suppose. i’ve never seen any rules in it anyway. i know there are many rules for different types of poetry but then again. i feel like poetry has always been just words put together to feel things and i guess that is the core purpose of every written type of art in the end right? 

Currently craving: a drama as good and as personal as The Journey Across the Night. that show really just stole my heart and i want that feeling back. i think about that show every day. i miss Li Jia and his two partners. i miss the vibes. i miss sitting on my floor watching it and just sobbing my heart out haha. also! craving a properly subbed, whole version of Anti-Fraud League. only the first 12 eps are badly subbed out there. wetv has... blocked? deleted? the whole show??? i need it to my life, i wanna see Xiao Yuliang being cute as Mi Ruo and i wanna know where the story goes smh

1. Why did you choose your URL? It's literally just my first and second name backwards. Not much else to it than that. I had a good feeling no one else would have the same URL and it was a dumb thing me and my friends did and laughed about when we were in school.

2. Any side blogs? I have two but I don't really want to name them for shyness reasons, haha! I will say one is a life-type blog that I am sorely neglecting and the others a roleplay blog.

3. How long have you been on Tumblr? I think since 2012, so about nine years. I'm not entirely sure so I went on my blog and searched for what I know is one of my first ever posts (I know it's my first because my hashtags are so messed up on it, haha).

4. Do you have a queue tag? Nope.

5. Why did you start your blog in the first place? I genuinely have no idea. I can't even remember creating this account, let alone why I did. The only thing I can say is that I know some of the original things I posted/reblogged on it were posts about Vampire Knight and Adam Lambert, but I don't think either of them were actual reasons for my starting it.

6. Why did you chose your icon/pfp? I recently got back into anime and my favourite anime of all time is D.Gray-Man. It's fantastically written and the relationship between the characters is genuinely well developed, including the two characters in my icon. They're somehow enemies who still care for each other at the same time and they have some sweet moments together.

7. Why did you choose your header? It was a beautiful piece of artwork from a friend of mine for Curious Archer (Alice and Robin from Once Upon A Time) along with my OC characters as their children. I was so honoured when she did this drawing based off of one of my fanfics and I still look at it so fondly every time.

8. What's your post with the most notes? Pretty sure it's my Avengers Endgame post where I talk about how much I love the way Tony treats his daughter and how well the films made him a dad without changing his entire character. It's also a post I still firmly stand behind 100%.

9. How many mutuals do you have? I have 8, though admittedly we don't talk much anymore. Especially lately which is entirely on me. I've been struggling to stay in contact with people but I'm hoping to change that and start reaching out more.

10. How many followers do you have? According to Tumblr; 1,387 but I wonder how many of them are abandoned blogs because I do not believe that many people care about my ramblings, haha!

11. How many people do you follow? As of right now; 28.

12. How often do you use Tumblr a day? A lot. I tend to be one of those who clicks on it every half hour just to see there have been no changes, come off, and then check again in half an hour.

13. Did you have a fight/argument with another blog once? Oh boy yes! I've had many fights with other blogs but the worse one I remember being when I was in the Teen Wolf fandom. There with this girl who, quite honestly, was a vile and nasty bully who harassed me even after I had her blocked simply because I didn't drool over a celebrity she obsessed over. We went back and forth a lot back in the day but thankfully enough time has passed that I don't even remember her blog name and I doubt she remembers mine.

14. How do you feel about “you need to reblog this” posts? I think they range from a little annoying to disgusting (talking about the ones saying to reblog or someone you care will get hurt). And honestly, no matter what the cause, topic or reason, the minute I see someone telling me to reblog something I will purposely ignore it. Even if I agree with the whole message it has, I am that petty, I will skip past if completely it tells me to reblog it.

15. Do you like tag games? Yes! They're a lot of fun to do and interesting to see everyone else's answers!

16. Do you like ask games? Again, yes! For some reason I've always loved answering questions.

17. Which of your mutual do you think is Tumblr famous? To be honest I don't know about that. I think a lot of my mutuals are casual bloggers, or mostly on twitter or have gotten fairly quiet over the years. Unless I've got my head in the sand and it turns out I have a mutual others gush over without me knowing, which is entirely possible.

18. Do you have a crush on a mutual? No, not really. I love them as great friends I will treasure but that's about it.

first of all, i just want to say i loved seeing all the thoughts and theories that were going on around all of this !!!  honestly, i think some of you guys gave me too much credit, because most of this is a lot simpler than the intricate stuff you came up with--- i wish i had thought of some of the things you all did !  but for now, finally, here’s  ( most of )  the clues i purposefully placed, as well as some general info, which i’ve tried to break up into sections for ease of reading.

SKELETONS / NUMBERS :

the skeletons are listed below with their id numbers  ( the tags are linked as well ) :

each of the id numbers were decided by entering the skeleton names onto the dial pad of a phone--- abc = 2, def = e, ghi = 4, jkl = 5, mno = 6, pqrs = 7, tuv = 8, wyz = 9.

phones in general were hinted at a few times.

in asks, as i tried to use the word ‘call’ repeatedly when asked about it, ‘key’ once, as well as the word ‘phony’ at one point. get it ? phone-y ?  that one was kind of a stretch, i know.

a phone prominently featured in a branch on the classification quiz.

the encoded text messages were, obviously, sent from a phone.

on an update before dropping stage 3, a strange voicemail was mentioned and you were encouraged to delete it from your phone.

the database speaks to you over the phone during curse finalization.

on the graphic for stage 3, a phone is the only object in the hallway.

some names did need to be shortened in order to fit all the same number of digits, so andromeda became adrmda, pandora became pandra, etc.

honestly, this code was weirder and more random than most of the other things, so i’d call it bonus points more than anything else. a lot of you puzzled out who was who without knowing what the numbers meant.

CURSE REGISTRATION / STAGE I   ( here ) :

i asked you all to send in these results to the curse database, and used those totals to decide the order in which the skeletons would be released ; midas ended up with the most results so they’re posted first, cassandra got the least so they’re last, etc.

results from all three stages will also factor in to some future plot drops, though i’ll keep those quiet for now.

TEXT POSTS :

these are pretty straightforward ; i chose text that i thought suits each skeleton as i’ve written them, and tagged them with their respective curse ids to tease the fact that there were ids at all.

FOLDERS PAGE   ( here ) :

this displays not only the skeletons’ classifications, but also their active danger levels ; one exclamation point for low, two for medium, three for high.

while the classifications were shown as only numbers 001-007 at that point, since the curse classification blog hadn’t dropped yet, in this ask a few posts previous i wrote the types as the first word of each corresponding number on the list.

CURSE CLASSIFICATION / STAGE II   ( here ) :

when you reach a result on the curse classifications, the clock at the top of the screen stops and displays a single time. that number corresponds to the number on the files image. when you get an error it shows only zeroes.

i took the hands off the clock on the image in the post, both because i wanted to draw attention to the clocks on the actual pages, and cause it looked sick.

if you get to page /c6, the clock stops and zeroes out. that’s because there’s no way to get anything but an error after that point.

i asked you all to send in these results to the curse database, too, and they were used as tiebreakers for the skeleton posting order. like, medea and pandora ended up with the same amount of results from registration, but there were more loss results than chaos from classification, so medea goes first.

TEXT MESSAGES   ( here, here, here, here, here, here, and here ) :

the encryption on the text messages is caesar cipher, where you shift the alphabet a certain number of letters over and substitute those letters for each other. for example, an alphabet with a shift of 1 would have a become b, b become c, and so on. the shift changes for each text message, depending on what the character’s curse classification is. so the text from narcissus  ( #0672787, classification of 6. love )  has a shift of 6.

the decoded texts are :

i also wanted to use this to kind of further their feeling of being watched ---which i hope i started to get across just in some answers to anons ---with the messages between skeletons be ‘intercepted’ by the database.

CURSE FINALIZATION / STAGE III   ( here ) :

before dropping this stage, a ‘data breach’ was mentioned twice in separate posts. this was to  ( hopefully )  encourage people to look for hidden information--- aka, the data that was breached.

there are five total hidden pages on this stage, and one secret extra message.

first is another intercepted message from one of the skeletons. the link is here.

on page /b2, click the word ‘key’ to get here.

the text message is from #0276372, aka cassandra, who is prophetic. cassandra is the only skeleton with anything set about their curse, and their prophecies will be a part of gameplay.

the url for this page is 0677437, and if you use the same keypad method as the numbers for the skeletons, that translates to ‘mssges.’

second is a chart monitoring active danger levels. the link is here.

on page /b3, the clock has stopped at 00:00:14, for the 14 skeletons. if you wait those 14 seconds, you will automatically be redirected.

the third is a contact log between the database and a god. the link is here. 

on page /c2, a ‘source’ is mentioned. if you view the source code of the page, the first thing at the top is the url.

the clock on this page has stopped at 02:09:01, and the connection was lost at that same time ; if you substitute letters in for numbers, 291 spells ‘bia’, the goddess of violence, who the communication was with.

the incident report is 8-1-18-16-25, which, with a substitution between numbers and letters, translates out to ‘harpy,’ the type of creature from the attack.

the codes you all reached are going to remain kind of a mystery for now. there is a solution for it, if you’re really interested in puzzling it out, but i’m not going to list the answer here. they’ve helped me decide the first plot drop of the group. this is somewhat of a teaser for how the gameplay will go here ; the curse database will remain an active player, and you’ll often be helping choose events. you just might not always when you’re doing it, or how.

easter eggs / fun facts, i guess !

when you get an error in curse registration or classification, if you hover your mouse over the word ‘error,’ it shakes like a glitch. this serves no purpose and means nothing, it just took me a while to figure out how to code, so i wanted to point it out. just let me have this

i actually had a very different stage three planned when i dropped stage two, one incorporating the results from registration and classification more, but the classification results i got were totally different than what i’d expected. while the registration results were pretty varied, over half of the 40-something answers i got from your classifications were for ‘love,’ and i actually got only one ‘monster’ and zero ‘death’ results from you guys. which i suppose is fitting, since there’s only one skeleton of each !  but still, it threw things off a bit, and i had to pretty thoroughly rework stage three. besides, i ended up with like 100+ results from both stages, and i got kind of overwhelmed with my original idea. you all kept me on my toes !!

i sent two asks to myself : the one i needed to set up so i could list out the curse classifications, the one to drop a hint about the /numbers page. the rest all came from you guys !  and for that i am hugely grateful--- i had sort of escape plans the entire time if there wasn’t enough interest, where i’d be able to drop the main after stage one or two and skirt around the extras, but i’m so glad i got to follow through on this thing to the end. i wouldn’t have been able to do it without your engagement. every single time i get a little inbox notification i get excited.

i noticed some of you were getting a lot of error results, but that’s not on you !  there were 32 possible results on curse registration with 16 of those being errors, and 15 results on curse classification with 8 of those being errors. so don’t worry, you were more likely on those stages to get an error than a result.

some of you wondered if the general urls  ( /a1, /b2, etc. )  of the different pages on the registration, classification and finalization blogs meant something, and i’m sorry to say they don’t. originally i was going to customize them so they’d be harder to just sift through later, but there ended up being 130+ total pages between all three blogs--- and for my own sanity, and for the sake of easier organization when editing them, i just left them as they were with their letters and numbers.

someone asked me if this post was for cassandra since the quote involves cassandra in the source material agamemnon. whoops. it’s not, that post is actually just a nod to the fact that i don’t know how to read.

As for your first question…This got long so I’m putting it below the cut. Sorry if I come across as annoyed / angry. That’s what thinking about season 5A does to me. 

Spoilers for Vikings in case this pops up in the feed of anyone that hasn’t caught up with season 5.

The quality of this show has deteriorated so much since the first season.

When Lagertha is almost raped by Knut in the first season, Ragnar later takes the blame saying that he is the one who killed Knut even though it was Lagertha who did it in self defense. The point is, that Ragnar is freed of the murder charge when it is revealed that Knut tried to rape Lagertha. It is established that he had the right to kill the man that assaulted his wife, who is a free woman. Clearly, Hirst throws this out the window later because when Lagertha’s second husband publicly abuses her no one bats an eye until she kills him. And then there’s the whole thing with Astrid that I’ll get back to later.

In season 5A, Björn and Halfdan’s storyline just feels completely out of place. It’s just…there. All it does is show us just how little Björn cares about Kattegatt and his family because he couldn’t even be bothered with stopping by to say “hi” to Torvi and the kids. This is even further solidified when he starts to eyefuck Snöfrid before he’s even had the decency to tell Torvi he doesn’t love her anymore. And his marriage to Snöfrid serves no purpose either. She speaks twice in the entire season, one of those times she’s just screaming “Father!”.

Margrethe is going crazy…No offense to the actress, based on what I know about Ida she seems like a lovely person but I don’t think she’s a very good actress. Another example of Hirst making sure that his female characters will be disliked. If you’re not a man or Lagertha he doesn’t give a shit. Margrethe will probably die soon but not to worry; there’s going to be a new blonde slave girl that’s involved with one of Ragnar’s sons.

I don’t even know where to start with Astrid. She was abducted, coerced into marrying Harald, then found out that her husband means to join forces with Ivar and attack her former lover, then she is raped because she wanted to warn Lagertha of the upcoming attack. But wait, it gets worse. She’s pregnant. When Astrid, understandably, isn’t over the moon about her new situation, Harald is portrayed as the poor sad man who was just so happy to be married and become a father. The official instagram account has tried to portray them as if they’re just this super cute couple but they’re not. I think Hirst said something about how everyone who died in episode 10 were ready to die. Bull. Shit. Astrid was suicidal, and in my opinion that’s quite different from being ready to die. Can ANY of the female characters ever catch a break?

And before someone says some shit about how rape is a part of the world and that it happens every day all over the world: I am very intimately familiar with rape so you don’t need to tell me that it exists, thank you very much. But it is a sensitive matter which Hirst clearly doesn’t know how to handle.

I can’t cosign Hirst’s shit anymore. I’ve unfollowed the official account and the actors on all social media. I might watch an episode here or there but as for the waiting with anticipation until the episode drops on HBO Nordic, I’m done. The show’s canon pretty much doesn’t exist for me right now, at least not the newest parts of it.

Disclaimer: Yes, I’ve written problematic shit too and unhealthy relationships. But unlike Hirst I am aware of it and actually try to tag appropriately and warn people. Plus I am open to criticism.

ok bear with me here. I can’t stand when people start to demonize an artist or writer based on their content. It makes me physically sick to think something like that genuinely alters someone’s perception of the artist.

now I’m not the most eloquent with wording all the time, so I’ll be siting people who are.

I want to pointedly remind people that the content they create does not somehow mean they are a bad, dangerous, or toxic person. Typically people write out “Bad Things” (r-pe, sh-ta/l-li, age d-fference, etc.) for one of two or three purposes. Often, these include coping with past trauma, coping with urges that could negatively affect themselves or others in the real world, or for commissions.

And to artists: You don’t have to reveal/explain every trauma you have to people to justify the content you produce!

It’s totally okay if you don’t enjoy that content! If you don’t want to see that content! Blacklist it, unfollow the artist, take steps to make sure you don’t have to see it! But please, please, don’t disrespect these content creators!

Now, I know tumblr likes it’s moral high ground, so here’s a couple of posts to read and consider. I don’t really intend to get myself into arguments on the net, but I just wanted to toss this out there. Messages regarding this will be ignored, least they add something constructive to the post.

Some of the greatest people I have ever known, that I’d trust with almost anything, have (at some point in time) drawn, written, or fantasized about “problematic content.” It doesn’t make them bad people. Please leave them be.

What Online Business Tools Do I Use?

 When thinking about the tools I have bought over the years for my business it always makes me shudder.

 To understand why we have to go back in my life for a bit of a history lesson . . .

  Jeepers, I know I am getting on, but I am not that old.

 On with the story . . .

 The Parable Of The Fool

I am going all the way back to 2014 when I first got interested in making money online.

 First, let me warn you. If you are new to online marketing, then make sure you read this. It is important and will save you a chunk of hard-earned cash.

 In those early days, I was a total novice. I assumed making money online involved creating up a single page website, posting it online, and then waiting for the money to roll in.

 I believed what the guru's were telling me. 'Get it online, it will be there forever bringing money into your bank account.'

 Believe me, it doesn't work like that.

 If you receive an email from anyone saying that, then scroll to the bottom of it and hit the 'Unsubscribe' button. You do not want advice from anyone like that.

 Now learning about how to make money online is tortuous for the majority of people. 'Newbies' who come into this industry often need to make money because they don't have any to start with.

 The problem is you get drawn into buying cheap products from JVZoo and Warrior+. Most are not going to solve your problem.

 At the price offered they are not going to be a complete solution. It is like getting 5% of a jigsaw puzzle. Even if you manage to put the pieces roughly where they should be you might get an inkling of the picture. That is if you are lucky.

 The next thing you do is buy another product with another incomplete solution. It doesn't help, because it is a different picture.

 What you need is to buy a package with a complete solution, except these cost big money. And you don't have big money.

 Also, many of these packages are still incomplete solutions. They may give you 50% of the picture. Why? Because the guru wants you to buy their coaching, which is where they make the real money.

 Even then, the coaching might not be the whole story. For that, you have to pay yet more money for their 'Mastermind' program.

 It is not all doom and gloom though. On the odd occasion, you stumble across someone like myself who has been around the block and will help you. Are you feeling better now you have found me?

 Most of the packages people buy when they come into online marketing never get used. It's a sad fact.

 There are several reasons why:

The package is incomplete

The package is a solution to one small problem

The package is not supported well by the owner

The package does not do what they say it does

I could go on.

 It is very easy to get into the mindset of believing the copywriters who market these products. They are professionals whose purpose is to make you feel you are making a big mistake if you don't buy it.

 In the end, you jump from one product to another. You believe Product B will give you the knowledge you lack to make Product A work.

 It won't.

 Flitting from product to product like this is what people call 'Shiny Object Syndrome'. It affects the majority of wannabe online business owners in the early days. Even experienced people who should have learned their lesson can stay afflicted.

 It is a bad disease and it costs you a lot of money. I know because I had a bad case of it.

 Back To The Present (Almost), But Still On My High Horse

A few weeks ago I went through my list of tools and training I had purchased over the last 5 years. The main email address I used to sign up for these products in the early days was expiring. I no longer use it so didn't want to pay another year's domain registration fee.

 My plan was to revisit old tools and training to update the email address to my current one.

 What I found was shocking. Like stun gun shocking.

  90% of the stuff I had purchased more than 2 years ago no longer existed!!! Gone. Kaput. It had dodo written all over it.

 Even some of the more up to date stuff had vanished too. The domain names were no longer registered.

 They had shuffled off to the resting place of digital ones and zeroes - binary heaven.

 One of these training packages I had paid $497 for. It was for a lifetime account.

 One thing you learn is that a lifetime account usually means for the life of the product. It is not for your lifetime. The lifetime of a product can be as little as 6 months!

 Now, before you go into complete despair, there is hope. My aim is to help you avoid some of the pitfalls I encountered.

 You may ask why most product vendors don't offer this advice too? The answer is if they did you wouldn't buy their stuff in the first place.

 The truth is, there ARE some good people out there. I have products that are still valid after 5 or six years. In fact, they are still marketed today. Some of these are inexpensive products too.

 Going through my backlog of woe, I discovered who some of the good guys are. For instance, my first mentor John Thornhill has the majority of his products still working and available for sale.

 The same applies to a marketer called Kevin Fahey.

 Both of these guys produce their own training and tools and are still active today. John Thornhill has launched the careers of a few decent marketers. His 'Partnership To Success' coaching program is responsible for putting these people on the map.

 His training is good and his philosophy passes on to his students. If you complete his training you have a high chance of success. This is because John backs you all the way. Your success is his success. His business grows as your business grows.

 'Stop Rambling And Get On With It'

Anyhow, back to the job in hand.

 I sifted through all the training packages and online tools I had purchased over the years. I didn't dare add up how much I had spent. I wanted to be able to sleep that night.

 What I ended up with was a lot of tools and a lot of training that had taught a lot of the good stuff I now know. Yes, there is some decent stuff out there thankfully.

 I made a list of the useful products in a spreadsheet, with notes explaining what they did. I included login details and URLs and denoted if they were a tool or training.

 I found some gems. The list I compiled offset some of the annoyance of so much deadwood. In fact, one or two of them will play a major part in what I build for my business. The best part is I bought them when they first hit the market and paid a pittance for a lifetime account.

 One package I paid $49 for a lifetime account. The same package now costs $92 a month because the tool has become popular. I purchased to top package that they have since developed even further.

 Stick with me over time and I will teach you how to get these types of products at these 'early-bird' prices.

 My Good Intentions

My intention is to build a list of the products I use and the products I recommend. This will be available on my website. It will help you make the right buying decisions.

 I also intend to provide reviews of many of these tools and training so you can judge if they are right for you too. I promise I will be honest in those reviews too.

 I will also review some of the major products as they get released. These will be the ones the marketers will be pushing hard. I want you to know if they are worth buying or not.

 My aim of these reviews is I want to build your trust. I can't see how I can achieve that if I recommend products to you I wouldn't use myself. Especially if you don't use them either.

 Many of these products I will make a commission from if you buy through my link. They won't cost you any more money than if you bought them anywhere else. The commission payment comes the product vendor as a thank you for recommending you.

 It is the same philosophy as the profit a retailer makes on any product they sell you. They make money for recommending a product to you.

 To continue to make commissions I need people to trust me. I won't gain trust if I recommend everything that hits the market. Especially as most of it is poor.

 It is sad, but this is how most marketers operate. They recommend products to make their commission. Their commission is all they care about. This is why so many poor products keep appearing on the market.

 My role is to guide you away from these and to products that are helpful and provide a useful function. I will tell you why they will help so you can decide if you are one of the people who would benefit from them.

 They weren't cheap. I have got past that stage. But they are effective.

 I have the experience now to tell the difference between gold and fool's gold (also known as pyrite). Can you tell I used to sell gemstones and crystals?

 I have most of the tools I need to start my business. I will let you into my vault where the gold resides over time. So pay attention over the coming weeks and months.

Hello everyone! These are some tips I wish I had known when I first got into the community. Warning: this got longer than intended, sorry! I tried to divide it into well separated sections, so it’d be easier for you to read only the parts that interest you!

Original content:

I think the best way to get your studyblr known is by posting original content, this can be either pictures of your journal, your notes, your stationery, etc. If you don’t feel like pictures are your thing, you could make advice masterposts or share little tricks and hacks that have helped you through your studies or your life in general.

Take nice pictures: 1) The trick here is to take your pictures near a window where the sun isn’t hitting directly on what you want to photograph (you can try direct sunlight as well, but I think if the sun’s too bright then you won’t be able to see what’s written on white paper). 2) A nice background makes all the difference. I personally prefer white backgrounds, so I just use my desk. BUT if you don’t have any white surfaces, you can create one by just laying down a few sheets of paper (that’s what I did for this post). Lots of people also use their bed sheets or duvets as background and it looks amazing as well! 3) Flatlays seem to be quite popular and they make the picture look very neat, aand you don’t need many photographic skills to pull it off, so I’d say it’s the best choice for taking pictures.

Edit pictures: If you’ve already taken your picture next to a window or in a well lighten environment, then you probably don’t need to edit it all that much (not that you ever have to edit your pictures, but it does make them look a bit more aesthetically pleasing and professional I’d say?). So if you still want to edit them (which I do), then I’d recommend the Snapseed app (available for Apple and Android), that’s the one I use, It’s free and it has a LOT of editing options. I also have the VSCO app (x x), which I downloaded because a lot of people here have recommended it, but I don’t really use it. You can play around with both apps and decide which one works best for you! (Oh and yes, like most of use here, I use my phone to take pictures).

Tag other blogs: Some people track a specific tag (usually their blog url, but not always, in which case they tend to clarify it somewhere in their blog). This is a great way for people to check out your content and then they might share it if they like it. There are some blogs who reblog everything they are tagged in, but I’d say this is the minority. If you’re not sure whether someone tracks their tag, then you can always ask them!

Trends: In the studyblr community there tend to be certain trends, such as a specific type of calligraphy, specific brands, etc. So there’s basically two paths here: You can choose to follow these trends and make your bujo spreads look like most journals look at that moment. This probably will make people reblog your stuff because that’s what everyone’s into. Another option is to go on the exact opposite direction and make your content completely different than everyone else’s in order to make it stand out more. Honestly, I don’t think one way’s better than the other, you’ll slowly figure out what makes you feel happier about your journal/notes. However, DO NOT copy someone else’s work and claim it as your own. You can get inspired by certain styles, yes, but if you replicate something somebody else made, then that’s stealing. That being said, lots of people recreate a bujo spread (for example) and then properly credit the person who originally made it, in which case I think it’s okay, but it’s always safer to ask for permission first.

Masterposts: There’s mainly two ways to make a masterpost: 1) You can make an original one with recommendations or tips you come up with yourself. My advice here would be to think of actually useful tips, do not just write whatever seems like the right thing to say, but instead use your own experience to think of tips that have indeed helped you in the past. 2) If coming up with advice is not your thing, you can gather around other people’s advice and provide links to their posts (they don’t even need to be from Tumblr blogs) in an organized structure that makes it easy for people to skim through and find what they’re looking for! Btw, even if you’re a studyblr, your posts don’t have to be all exclusively study related. There are some really good masterposts about mental health, moving out on your own, meal recipes, etc.

Stay visible:

One of the good things about the studyblr community is that most people won’t unfollow you just because you weren’t active for a certain period of time, we all understand that sometimes life (study related or not) just gets busy and it’s okay to take some time for yourself. BUT at the same time it’s true that in order to get your content around, you need to stay active to a certain extent.

Queue your posts: You can even do some research to find out when it’s the best time of the day to post something and on which days of the week and set your queue to those hours.

Interact with others: This helps to get your blog known AND it’s a great way to meet people in the community! There are loads of ways in which to do this: 1) Simply send someone a message and start a conversation with them, ask them about their day or tell them about yours. 2) Join a network. I’ve never been in one myself (bc shyness hey) but they do sound fun! 3) Try doing other people’s “challenges”, for which they usually provide a tag for you to use so they can check out your posts for the challenge. 4) Tag people in these little games that go around, like this bold tag thingy (I think that’s the only example I have).

Blog aesthetics:

In order to make your blog more appealing, make sure you spend some time on your theme and icon. If they go well together, it will create an organized layout, which tends to catch people’s eyes and make it more likely for them to check out your content.

Theme: The possibilities are endless. Whichever style you prefer, there’s definitely a theme that goes with it. Personally speaking, I love neat, soft-colored themes. I believe organization is key, if your links and information are easily accesible, then that adds up to your blog for sure! Here are a few theme makers whose content I’ve been using lately: @acuite, @cyantists, @felinum, @odeysseus, @pohroro​, @roxiestheme​. In addition, you can find a lot of great themes here: @theme-hunter​ (they even classify the themes by style, post size, etc.).

Icon: This is the door to your blog, people see it on their dash and use it to identify you. Some people make free icons for you to use, but I personally prefer making my own. Don’t worry, you don’t need to be super skilled or even use Photoshop for this. 1) I usually use Canva to make my icons or banners. They have lots of templates for you to use as a guide, or you can start your design from scratch. They do require you to register with an email, but it’s free yay (unless you want to pay for some special designs, but, honestly, their free stuff is more than enough to create whatever you need). 2) Flaticon is another website which provides a TON of icons and pictures that you can use (you do not have to pay to download the images, but you DO have to properly credit whoever made them).

Be consistent: Choose whichever content you’d like to post and stick to it. Not everyone is this picky, but some people only follow blogs whose posts belong to a certain category (studyblr, fandoms, fitness, clothes, etc.). This doesn’t mean you can’t post an occasional random post, though. Don’t restrict yourself, but do try to keep you content consistent.

Balance:

Life’s all about balance. Regarding your studyblr, I think there are mainly two aspects in which you need to apply this.

Studying vs. keeping a blog: Yes, studyblrs can be helpful when it comes to your studies (there is a lot of advice going around and, personally, it helps me to stay motivated and makes me want to do better). However, at the end of the day it’s still a Tumblr blog, which means you can spend hours and hours here without even realizing it, so be careful not to lose yourself in the wonderful journals and unbelievably neat notes that the community has to offer, because then you won’t end up doing any of your work.

Aesthetics vs. functionality: You’ve probably seen those posts which reassure you that your notes & journal are made to increase your productivity so there’s no need for you to make them pretty if that’s not your thing. I’m not going to preach you on that, we all know it’s true. However, It frustrates me a little bit that on that kind of posts, they never seem to acknowledge the fact that some of us spend time making our notes and journals pretty because it’s actually helpful for us. I’m less likely to want to study from my notes if they’re all messy and lifeless, so I spend time on them. Regarding my journal, whether I keep it extremely simple or make it super fancy and decorated, it would serve its purpose either way. BUT, spending time decorating my journal is what helps me unwind at the end of the week. So, no, I don’t spend time on my journal because that’s going to help me achieve my goals, I spend time on it because it helps me to relax and get away from the world for a little while. Not everything we do needs to have an academic purpose.

1. Trust

[Lawlu, T] Looking out his window and seeing the sun setting was a sight that Law was not quite used to. (The sun’s reflection shimmering on the water of the horizon, the glow behind the Sunny. It was sight that, despite waking up to it every morning for the past few weeks, was unfamiliar – foreign - to him, even if welcome.) Because until lately, he had been so accustomed to never surfacing unless necessary.

2. Relax

[Lawlu, G] Luffy was a rambunctious person, nobody could deny that. He would jump from idea to idea, person to person, without a thought in the world. One minute he could be fishing, and the next pestering Sanji for food. His actions were unpredictable, random, sporadic. Except when it involved a specific individual.

3. Allure

[Lawlu, G] An alliance. That's all it was supposed to be. Combine their powers towards the same purpose. Many pirates did this. Joining together to accomplish something. To defeat an enemy that was larger or stronger than you. And that was what Law needed right now.

4. Attachment

[Lawlu, T - Swearing/Alcohol Use] ”Shishishi, here you go Torao. I had Franky make it~” Law often recalled the moment when Luffy had given him an earring. It was… different, he had to admit it. His - the Heart Pirates’ - Jolly Roger wearing a Strawhat. (Ironically enough, however, he had come up with a similar gift to his ally: a bracelet. Akin to the one he wore back on Sabaody. With the same damn symbol. Shachi had come up with the idea. Part of him wonders if Shachi had given Luffy the same idea. It was likely.) He fingered the earring, and found himself smiling, although he wouldn’t admit that he adored it greatly.

5. Execute

[Lawlu, T, Major Character Death/Swearing/Angst] He could hear that laughter in his ears. Still feel the warmth of that hand in his. Still see that never-ending smile beaming up at him. “Luffy-ya” He whispered one night. “Luffy-ya.” He had begged. The nightmares had been particularly bad that night.

[Lawlu, T, Swearing/Angst] Law knew that his mind? Well, it wasn’t in the most healthy of states. He knew he was fucked up beyond any full state of repair. He knew that he was reckless to a tee. There was the fact that Luffy, without fail, would sleep on his stomach. The closest exception to this rule was when the captain was tightly holding a pillow, half on his stomach and half on his side. And, thinking about it, usually when Luffy was laying down it was on his stomach. There were other unusual tendencies that Luffy had.

[Lawlu, T, Swearing/Angst/Character death] "ACE!" The cry rang through the skies, the ocean, and the forest. Loud. Heartbroken. Alone. The word was repeated. Louder. Stronger. (Weaker.)
